1. Introduction Environmental degradation has caused effects on many aspects. One of those effects is the changing of climate globally. Some countries have initiated programs to mitigate the impact on climate change including Government of Indonesia which has been working on the national program by ministry of forestry through REDD+ program. In district level, Government of Berau has been committed to participate the REDD program by a joint program with The Nature Conservancy. Berau regency has been set into Demonstration Activities since 2010.
The REDD+ program that is being developed in Berau is known as Berau Forest Carbon Program (BFCP). It’s a series of actions to reduce the impact of the deforestation and forest degradation which will cause harm in the later time. This program involves not only the governments and the conservancy organization but also the society itself. However, many people don’t know what climate change is? Does it harm? Is it really about to change our life circumstances? Actually climate change happens naturally as our nature is turning at some points. But at what point they will impact on our live? For instance, we are facing the facts that many animals have become extinct for a certain reason quite a long time. We even could not feel comfortable without air conditioning in our offices. The weather is getting warmer. We need to make it better for our next generation.
Regarding this issue, Yakobi conducted a workshop related to Climate Change for elementary school’s teacher entitled “Puppet Show Workshop: Forest and the impact of Climate change for children of Indonesia”. Why the target is on elementary school students? The answer is because they are our next generation who will continue to live as we (adult) are about to change. They have to know how to manage the nature wisely. They have to be taught for what they can do to live side by side with nature. Our great grandparents had nurtured their children using puppets for a long time ago. Even when they lived in a cave, they used to conduct a shadow puppet show in a cave wall. For example, si Unyil (one of puppet icons in Indonesia) has been known by so many people at any level of ages that goes the same way like Hermit the Frog at Sesame Street. Puppet is proven to be the best method of learning because it is able to deliver message to the children. A child will follow and understand easily to what a puppet said rather than to what their teachers or parents said.
2. Objective
“Puppet show workshop: Forest and the impact of Climate change for children of
Indonesia” aimed targets are to:
1. Deliver issues on climate change; what is climate change? What is the cause, and how to minimize the impact? 2. Nurture the children on climate change issues. 3. Emerge local story on climate change in today’s life and turn it into a puppet show to deliver messages about nature.

4. Disseminate climate change information to elementary school’s teachers so they can make some programs or actions to reduce the impact on climate change at schools that can be applied by students. 5. Share knowledge of how to conduct a good puppet show, the puppet show stages and how to make a good story that can be best fitted to children.

Five different schools participating in this workshop were chosen to represent the local subjects happening at their schools. They were chosen because: 1. The schools have never conducted the puppet show programs or similar programs at their schools before. 2. The schools are reachable by land transportation, and 3. The schools are willing to create a puppet show program at their schools.
The participants from each school were teachers who has taught either science or art subjects. They were in charge to make a good puppet show stage based on science and art backgrounds. Partnership between RECOFTC and YAKOBI

4. Methods adopted from training Methods used in this workshop were slide presentations, videos, Focus Group Discussion (FGD), games and direct puppet shows. All resource people used presentation slides and videos to raise participants’ understanding about climate change. The videos showed some facts related to climate change phenomenon occurring in the world including in Indonesia.
Through focus group discussion, the participants were divided into some groups. Then the participants discussed about the climate change effects occurring around their schools. The result of their discussions was written down on flipchart papers and presented by taking turns. All participants were quite familiar with this method.
The last session was about Climate Change. By using the same method and same group, the participants were encouraged to make an adaptation and mitigation strategy which might be applicable at school environments by using mind map method.
Participants from each school were given an opportunity to demonstrate their ability to use puppets after obtaining relevant materials and examples of how to use them. The participants spontaneously put in pairs to prepare materials and chose doll characters. The committee showed how to prepare it in less than 5 minutes. The stories were about how to manage the garbage at schools, home environment in children’s life, traveling to tourist destinations in Berau and stories of friendship.
5. Course Material
The training materials used on this training was presentation slides, short videos/films and flipcharts. This training used slides to show the schemes of green house gas effects, the climate change impacts and the efforts to apply the adoption and mitigation scheme of REDD+ especially in tandem with Berau Forest Carbon Program applied in Berau. Video/film was an effective way to show the impacts on climate change occurring in some places in the world. Video/film also might become an interesting additional material used by teachers to visualize the climate change impacts to their students at their in schools.
Another material used was flipchart paper. It was used in mostly training processes to write down participants’ ideas about the topic given. They wrote or drew pictures on it about their school environment to describe the impacts on climate change or green house houses and what the adaptation and mitigation strategies might be easily applied at their schools. When the workshop finished, all presentation files used were collected and save in CDs and then distributed to all participants.
6. Course Contents
The workshop was conducted for four days, divided into two sessions. The first session was on 21 – 22 January 2013. It consisted of the issues of climate change, Partnership between RECOFTC and YAKOBI

Berau Forest Carbon Program (BFCP), the puppet show as learning tools and how to make a good story that best fit to children.
The first phase lasted for two days. On the third day, on January 23, there was a gathering with 22 NGOs affiliations in Berau and photos exhibition and talk show. This event was attended by about 300 participants ranging from government employees, activists, schools students and public. At the end of that section, Yakobi presented a puppet show.
The second session was held on 28-29 January 2013. This training was about how to make and use puppets as a learning material.
1. Climate Change and REDD+ and Berau Forest Carbon Program ( PKHB)
Generally, the participants of puppet show training were familiar with climate change issues. However, their further understanding related to the causes, effects and the efforts to reduce the climate change was still insufficient. 1 or 2 representatives from each school attending the workshop. They are science teachers and art teachers. This workshop was to facilitate participants to understand on climate change issues and the existing BFCP schemes in Berau. After getting the explanation and information about Climate Change and REDD+ schemes (BFCP) in Berau, the participants began to actualize their understanding towards the concepts of climate change; adaptation and mitigation which might be applied at schools.
2. Puppet Show
Puppet show was the key topic of this training and enthusiastically welcomed by the participants. Puppets are identified as an effective media to learn. Using varieties of themes, puppets are possible to manage and attract the audience. However, participant experiences using this media were inadequate as they only knew that puppet was an entertainment media displayed on children television programs in one of national television channels.
3. Pictures Pictures were dominantly used in this training. It was started by displaying materials related to greenhouse effects, causes and effects on climate change and the effort towards adaptation and mitigation. The participants actualized the training material through group discussions. Pictures were valuable media to help participants understanding the workshop effectively.
7. Key Output and Findings
The participants could explain about climate change. They could manage the program with teachers’ participatory, students and school community about the adaptation and mitigation of climate change at the school environments by using media images (mind mapping). Teachers could also provide an explanation on climate change to students using stories through puppet media. Puppet is a fun and easy media to children therefore children could adopt and follow easily what the characters displayed. Teachers could facilitate their students to make a story script

based on the condition at their school environments. It might be about garbage management at schools or other topics. Teachers and school managements agreed that puppet stage activities could be continued as an annual school event.
Climate Change workshop on puppet show festival is expected to be ongoing programs by involving all schools in Berau. The follow up of this workshop is expected not only to the students but also the teachers because teachers participatory to build the students’ character related to environment concerns are important. The duration of this workshop is expected to be longer than it was to give more time to participants to understand the materials clearly as the participants have to transfer their knowledge to students at their schools. Besides that, it is necessary to do this training regularly to raise understanding regarding environments and global warming effects. Furthermore, it is also expected that environmental subject is inserted to be one of elective subjects at schools. On pre-test given at the beginning of the workshop, most participants still got confused to answer the questionnaire. Basically, they did not really understand about the subjects related to the benefits of forest, the ways to keep it, the effects on greenhouse gases and REDD program. However, on post test, the result of questionnaire showed significant increase of participants’ knowledge. They could explain more about the benefits of forest to people. Besides that, they also could understand the effects of greenhouse gases and REDD program. Overall, the participants not only could comprehend their knowledge related to the process of workshop but also give explanation about the materials presented.
8. Major gaps or issues identified •
• •
This workshop gave positive impacts on participants. However, the participants were limited. It was supposed that more teachers or participants would participate in this workshop. Furthermore subject about environment would be inserted as an elective subject at schools to learn. The break time given was very short to complete all materials, so in the future it would be necessary to give longer time to break.
The setting of the training room should be adjusted depend on the number of participants. Besides that, the room temperature should be paid more attention as some participants could not stand on cold condition, therefore they could not concentrate.
9. Outreach and communication strategy
The responses from schools and participants to follow and implement the workshop and festivals were good enough. Moreover media were also involved to disseminate information about the workshop and festivals before and after those events held, such as local newspaper (Berau post), and local television (Sanggam TV), local radios, social networks and website. Those media were chosen because it could be easily accessed by majority of people in Berau.

Some participants suggested that the workshop and festival should be continued in order to involve more participants and audience and to include as a part of school’s dramas and theaters. We plan to write all the reflection processes of teaching methods from the climate change workshop to puppet show festivals teachers could do into a book. Hopefully this book would complete the proposal of environmental subject drafts previously initiated by TNC to schools.
