PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE “You were put on this earth to achieve your GREATEST SELF, to live out your PURPOSE, & to do it COURAGEOUSLY.” These words of Dr. Steve Maraboli remind us on how to realize our theme for this Academic Year 2015/2016 on ‘Aiming for Excellence’. True, it is by bravely living our goals that we can accomplish our BEST SELVES. Moreover, Ralph Marson tells us that “Excellence is not a skill. It is an attitude”. I can say that we’ve courageously started the AY on the right track. We had a well-attended Parent & Classroom Orientation Day where we welcomed around 200 new BINUSIANS through the New Student Orientation activities organized by the Student Council Officers, PE teachers & Guidance Counselors. It was heart-warming to have seen the new Parent Support Group who, through Ibu Yuko, the new Chairperson, excitedly shared their goals for the school, under their PSG theme, “Love through UNITY.” The annual events of the first semester went well as expected. You will see these from the pages of this BNews13 publication compiled for us by the Media & Communications Committee through the leadership of Mr. Raditya & Ms. Prysca. From the academic realm, we are happy to share with you that more than 400 of our students from EL 3 to EL 6 joined ICAS 2015. From its results, 52 of them got distinctions, 8 with high distinctions & 7 of them courageously garnered 2 Silver for English & 5 Bronze medals (2 for Math, 1 for Science & 2 for IT)! From the affective aspect, our swimmers, writers & speakers, made the school proud by winning from the various interschool competitions which they’ve joined in. You will likewise see in this newsletter the ecards made for these BINUSIAN ACHIEVERS. They are indeed our PRIDE! Thanks to them & to those who coached & helped them in one way or another, especially their parents who continually motivate, encourage & support them. BINUSIANS, let’s continue to strive & aim for Excellence in our Home for Learning! - Ms. Elsie L. Bait -

Our ECY/EL Parent Support Group led by Ibu Christina Budiarta started the “BINUS Used Uniform Goes to Flores Drive – Aksi Berbagi Senyum” last Academic Year 2014 – 2015. This drive came about due to the number of used uniforms not being used at home as well as parents thought it would be such a waste to throw or give them away since they carry the School’s logo. When they found out that there are schools in Flores in need of uniforms, they proposed this programme to the School. The School thought of this as a win-win because unused uniforms will not go to waste as well as we are able to help others out. So the Parent Support Group under the leadership of Ibu Ira Savitri (PSG Chairperson 2014 – 2015) collected the used BINUS uniforms from parents and worked together to prepare them to be ready for sending to Flores. They had to cover the logo and make sure that the uniforms were still in good condition. After this, they then packed the uniforms and sent them to schools in Flores. The Schools that received the uniforms were: PAUD Sint Benediktin, SD Sano Nggoang, SMP Metangga. In total, we were able to help out a total of 243 students in all. This Academic Year 2015 - 2016, the PSG under the leadership of our new PSG chairperson, Ibu Yuko continued this programme and involved the MSHS PSG. Since they found out that there are more students in need of help, they also reached out to sponsors. This year, they were able to give to the following schools: PAUD Sint Benediktin ,Labuanbajo, SD Sano Nggoang, SMP Metangga, SD Metangga, SD Nunang, SMP Sint Paulus Larantuka, Gereja Paroki Nunang. In total, we were able to provide uniforms and stationeries for 300+ students. This programme is in itself is a very simple way of giving back and giving to those in need. Our unused uniforms have now become a sense of pride for our less privileged brothers and sisters in Flores. All these is a reflection of our BINUS SCHOOL Serpong community’s (Parents and the School) commitment to citizenship and caring for others & as part of realizing one of the visions of the school on building the Moral Character of our BINUSIANS through Service

STUDENTS’ EXPERIENCES Grade 4 show their caring side Can you imagine being born with no legs? Or not being able to see or hear? On October 8th, the Grade 4 students enjoyed a life-changing field trip to Bakhti Luhur school, where they met children with disabilities. Grade 4 had already studied a unit in English about Jade Chan, a character created for the MyPals books. Jade is disabled and she writes a diary about her experiences and feelings. This field trip was a great chance for grade 4 to meet real children in a similar situation to Jade. After overcoming their nerves at the start, these caring BINUSIANS found that the human beings behind the disabilities are just the same as anyone else. They are warm, friendly and have a good sense of humour! Binus and Bakhti Luhur danced and sang together to the music played by a talented blind music group. We gave gifts and donations and did activities such as colouring, origami and story-telling. Our BINUSIANS showed how open-minded they are and made a great effort to have conversations with their new friends. Some of the students are very smart and only have physical disabilities. Others do have mental disabilities or learning difficulties. Either way, the Binus students showed their caring and social awareness to find ways to communicate. We left with great memories and a better understanding of the thoughts and feelings of disabled children. It’s certainly not all sadness. The Bakhti Luhur students might not have it easy but they are otherwise normal children who show a lot of joy. They are strong and determined to learn just like any other school children. It shows that whatever your weaknesses, if you are grateful for what you have and work hard then you can be whatever you want to be. - By : Angeline Wong & Jon Gibson “At first, I saw them as different and not normal. I also felt uncomfortable and wanted to go home. But after I got to know them, I felt happy. I also saw them as normal. I thought it must be hard for them to do some things. If I could get back there, I will help them and be kinder to them. I hope that someday, there will be a cure for them.” - Audrey C. EL4E -

Every morning, we are always greeted by the kind, smiling faces of the Student Council Officers and the teachers who are on duty. This simple action makes us feel at ease and energizes our determination to learn and have fun at school.

To spend our morning waiting for the lessons to begin, we always enjoy playing and visiting the kids from lower grades. It’s fun to see how much they are extremely eager to learn new things.
The playground is where the earliest memories of our exciting education at BINUS is hidden. This place accompanied us through the many games of freeze tag and hide and seek. Cooperation with friends and lots of fun are both combined in here.
Throughout the day, we have fun learning with our friends. We don’t only learn inside the classroom, but we also study in other places such as the Music Studios, Art Classes, IT Labs and Science Laboratories. All different classrooms make our learning experience more interesting.
We, BINUSIANS, would always visit the Learning Resource Center (LRC) whenever knowledge and enjoyment both become the things we seek the most. The LRC can be described as an “Intelligence Dreamland”. Thick books, small books, novels, encyclopedias and other types of books can definitely be found in here.
It’s finally dismissal time — the perfect time to fully socialize with our friends without worrying about the lessons. While we wait for our parents to pick us up, we often roam around the school and relax. This bridge going to the canteen is our favourite spot to chat, joke around and watch other students who are playing. Indeed, BINUS is a paradise for fun and learning.

FUN TEACHER’S DAY On Thursday 19 November 2015, BINUS School Serpong celebrated Teacher’s Day. To commemorate this special occasion, the school was filled with decorations that were made by the parents. The excitement already started from the morning, each teacher received a special package containing some sweet treats. Parents and students also prepared special events and performances in two different venues. The event for ECY Teachers was conducted in the morning in the Main Library Hall. The programme was opened with a morning prayer and continued with opening remarks from the PSG. The programme was followed by dancing and singing performances from the ECY students. Each ECY teacher was called on to the stage to receive a goodie bag and a balloon with a picture on it. The programme was closed with a class photo session on the stage. The event for EL Teachers was conducted at the Sjuman Hall. The rain did not dampen the excitement and enthusiasm of the parents, teachers, and students. The programme started with a prayer and continued with opening remarks from the PSG. The opening act was a poem recitation by one of the students, and the programme continued with singing performances from the EL 1-6 students. The parents also prepared a role-playing game done by the students, in which they imitated a few teachers and the audience had to guess who the teachers were. This year, the parents held a Teacher’s Award with funny categories such as Mr. Groovy, Mr. Dad, Ms. Barbie, Mr. Selfie, Ms. Smile, Mr. Funky, Mr. Rocker, Ms. Angelic, Mr. Baby Face, and Mr. Charming. The program was closed with a dancing performance and closing remarks from our beloved Principal, Ms. Elsie. There was also a surprise dance performance by the ECY and EL teachers to thank the parents for the Teacher’s Day Activities which they prepared to make the teachers happy. Not only were the teachers entertained, they also received special lunch treat, door prizes, and caricatures of themselves. It was a fun and engaging event! Our Learning Resource Center always promotes love for reading, which is why LRC came up with different activities to encourage students to develop their desire for books. The first event was the ‘Author’s Talk’ that happened on September 9, 2015 in celebration for the International Literacy Day. Selected EL 3 classes joined the event to hear our Binusian parent and writer, Ms. Melly Sujitro. The second part of the ‘Author’s Talk’ was held on October 28, 2015 as part of Language Week Celebration. EL 1 students attended the event and met the speaker, Ms. Lily Dawis. This annual event of LRC aims to inspire students who have passion for writing. In connection with Author’s Talk, LRC came up with the ‘Illustrator’s Talk Activity’ during Language Week Celebration on October 29, 2015. The EL 2 students were given a chance to meet and listen to Ms. Andhika Wijaya, a book illustrator. She explained how it is to be an illustrator. She showed samples of her work and she wished to inspire students to be book illustrators like her. Students learnt that this profession is as important as the author to keep the book attractive and interesting to readers. Another Activity on that day was the ‘Poster Making Contest’ for EL 5 and 6. The contestants completed the theme ‘I Love LRC because…’. The objective of this activity was to have self-awareness to why they love LRC and the importance of books in their lives. Lastly for Language Week celebration, there was the ECY Book Character Fashion Show, which was held on October 30, 2015. ECY 1-3 students enjoyed donning their costumes based on a book that they had read. Students felt as they were part of the book. This activity tickled the students’ imagination and hopefully soon will develop into deeper interest in books. LRC has more activities to offer in the Semester 2. Teachers, parents and students are always welcome to participate in the upcoming events. - By : Maricar Valiente -

The students who have been elected as Student Council members joined the Leadership Camp on Friday and Saturday, October 9-10, which was held in our school vicinity. This is one of the programmes for SC officers to prepare them to take on their leadership role . The Leadership Camp for SC officers was arranged by Ms. Marife R. Dimaunahan as the Head of Students Development Council, and facilitated by Mr. Yusdi Lastutiyanto as the teacher-in-charge. The objectives of this camp were to make the students understand the true definition of leadership, to develop their confidence to help them undertake major responsibilities, to make a change in the School Community, to recognize their leadership potential so they can run and lead the council competently and effectively, and to become the bridge between the students and the rest of the school community. The SC officers also learned about leadership from experts and professionals from Pramuka and Basarnas (Indonesian Rescue Team). The SC officers really enjoyed the various activities that were held at the ECY & EL Indoor rooms and Sjuman Hall. Mr. Yusdi, the teacher-in-charge, hoped that the event can be held annually. Congratulations to our new Student Council officers. We hope they can be great leaders who inspire and motivate us to achieve our goals and be true ambassadors of BINUS to the communities around them.

Salam hangat

What are the things you love doing as a family & why? We love travelling together. For we would like to create a memorable moment for a future that kids will remember. In addition, we also would like to introduce to our kids the other side of the world that they have not seen yet such culture of each place, history, and etc. So that they can learn diversity, people differences and be grateful. Furthermore, we would like to create a strong emotional bonding with our kids and between them as well. Holiday is really a break moment for all of us both from work and school so that we can relax and have fun. Name three most important family values/virtues which you practice & explain why? We introduce “FROG” which stands for friendly, respect, obey and grateful. We learn about this from the church and agree to implement it at home. For we believe our children need to be friendly, so that they learn to welcome and be warm to everyone as part of social skills to connect with everyone. Respecting others with different backgrounds and opinions is important so that they can start learning being open to diversity. In addition, respect to parents, teachers and elders are also important as per God’s command. Children also need to learn to obey their parents. This is part of God’s command as well, so that they can be wise in the later part of their lives. This is part of parent’s obligation to teach children how to have a Godly life. Grateful is a mother of skill, children need to learn being grateful in every situation, so that their focus is more on the positive side or solution, so that they can enjoy their lives and be happy In addition to the above, we also introduce the value of Being Open and Honest. We believe we need to be open and honest in creating a healthy relationship with everyone. What’s your most memorable family experience? Our first road trip from Jakarta – Semarang – Solo – Yogyakarta – Batu Raden and Lembang. This was really an amazing trip. How would you like to see your family 20 years from now? We would like to see our children have a Godly character, pursuing their passion and have a strong family bonding who loves and respect each other. What’s the family’s (or individual members’) greatest accomplishment/s or achievements? Mama created a Christmas opera in the church and Batik business which the whole family work together to support. How has studying in BINUS affected your children/family? Our children learn to be disciplined, systematic in learning and enjoy the learning process. And they are not only learning academic skills but also other things. Moreover, mama also has opportunity to involve in the learning process through PSG and other activities. In other words, their potential is leveraged and have space to be developed and presented. Furthermore, our first son became more sporty while the second one is interested in organization. By seeing their mom involved in PSG, they learn about how to connect with other people with different backgrounds and also learn how to be a part of an organization and contribute to it. What can you say is the biggest advantage of studying in BINUS? Or what do you like most about BINUS? The facilities provided in BINUS are complete. We do not worry thinking the continuity of learning after the elementary school. BINUS has a very strong system of learning including a supporting system, which makes it easy for parents to get information. We also learn that BINUS has a very strong entrepreneurship spirit which we’d like our children to learn and embed. Are you a proud BINUSIAN family? If yes, why. If not, why not? Yes, we are proud as a BINUSIAN family. For we believe this school is not only focusing on academic matters but also introducing to children to love their country and to give back to their community. The Parents Support Group is also an amazing forum for parents to be involved and participate actively in supporting children’s learning process such as emotional, health, sex education and etc., which have a very positive impact on children and parents.
Best regards, Danang, Yuko, Kenji (Grade 6H), Hiroshi (Grade 3D)
This is the family of our current PSG Chairperson, Ibu Yuko.

How To Make Your Own Sock Puppet
Sock(s), Glue gun, scissors, cardboard, red felt cloth, cotton balls, googly eyes, any preferred craft items (for puppet decoration)
1. Find a sock that’s long enough to cover your arm.
2. Trace your hand (four fingers only without the thumb) and cut out the cardboard.
3. Fold the cardboard in half to be the puppet’s mouth.
4. Trace your cardboard onto a piece of felt cloth.
5. Cut along the seam line of your sock.
6. Glue the edge of your cardboard and attach it to the cut out you made on your sock.
7. Paste the felt cloth on the card board to hide the rough edges.
8. Decorate your sock puppet with the cotton balls and googly eyes (add extra buttons or make pipe cleaner bow tie)
9. Give your puppet a name and let’s play!
