An illuminated parade passed through the streets of Jihlava and Markéta Dobiášová took home the Respekt Award. The twentieth annual Jihlava IDFF has kicked off; with its programme featuring silent films accompanied with live music. On Tuesday evening, several figures set out on their way from the Lighthouse erected on the Masaryk Square. The parade carried illuminated artefacts that dominate this year’s Jihlava IDFF’s visual concept. In line with the festival tradition, the opening parade was headed by the presenter duo, Jiří Havelka and Ondřej Cihlář, members of the Vosto5 ensemble. Markéta Dobiášová received the Respekt Award for her TV reportage Obchod s nadějí (Trade with Hope). In the upcoming days, the Jihlava IDFF’s showcase will feature Russian avant-garde films with a live musical accompaniment. This year’s Opening Ceremony took to the streets of Jihlava. A parade of illuminated figures carrying the festival’s typical artefacts moved from the Masaryk Square, passing by the Vysočina Regional Gallery, and ending up at the DKO Cinema – the festival’s headquarters. The theme of carrying our past on our backs has thus become tangible. The parade was led by the traditional presenter duo, Jiří Hovorka and Ondřej Cihlář of the Vosto5 ensemble. On their way to the DKO Cinema, they were joined by the festival’s director, Marek Hovorka, all of the competition jury members as well as the film scholar, Ivan Klimeš, who had an opportunity to officially launch the release of his latest publication, Cinema and the State in the Czech Lands in the Years 1895–1945. Among the parade’s participants was also the editor-in-chief of the Respekt Weekly, Erik Tabery, who announced the tenth laureate of the annual Respekt Award for the best TV, video and online reportage. This year’ award has been granted to Czech Television reporter Markéta Dobiášová for her reportage Obchod s nadějí (Trade with Hope). scientist charged tens of thousands of Czech crowns, although the benefits of this procedure have not yet been proven. “The Respekt Award for the best TV, video and online reportage has been granted to Czech Television’s Markéta Dobiášová for her thorough investigative report on a professionally and personally complex case. As well as for the social impact of the outcome of her efforts,” said the members of the jury composed of editors of the Respekt weekly in unison. Film experimenter Bill Morrison making an appearance in Jihlava In his masterclass held today, Wednesday, October 26, American experimenter Bill Morrison will discuss his work with damaged film material. Two of his latest films – Spanish travelogue The Dockworker’s Dream and Little Orphan Annie with touches of the horror genre – will be shown as part of his retrospective and personally introduced by the author. “An archive is like a port, a place where goods are loaded and unloaded, stored, until the dockworkers release them from the storage again. As a film theoretician and editor, I search for hidden or elusive film material,” says Bill Morrison, commenting on his latest film. During his masterclass focusing on his unique use of damaged footage he will initiate festival visitors into the mysteries of his filmmaking method. Russian avant-garde with live music The section entitled Russian Avant-garde will present pivotal works of Soviet filmmaking avant-garde of the 1920s a ‘30s. Russian film avant-garde in a nutshell: first comes Dziga Vertov, followed by everyone else. Festival visitors will be able to witness the first dialogue between Dziga Vertov and Mikhail Kaufman tonight at 11 PM at the DKO 2. Their films Stride, Soviet! (Dziga Vertov, 1926) and Moscow (Mikhail Kaufman, Ilya Kopalin, 1927) will be accompanied by a solo guitar performance by Jan Kašpar and his project Obelisk of Light together with colleagues of the Raw Deal.

The soundscapes for Russian avant-garde titles shown on Saturday, October 29, will be created by composer, choir leader and pianist Karel Loula, duo Ba:ze l, and duo Afrika Corpse underscoring films Turksib and A Sixth Part of the World with their minimal music. Winners of My Street Films in the programme of the Jihlava IDFF The third edition of the My Street Films nationwide competition knows its winners. A jury composed of Hana Kulhánková, director of the One World human rights documentary film festival, Ondřej Hudeček, director of the award-winning Peacock, and Diana Tabakov, the head of My Street Films, has selected three laureates: What to Do While Trains Pass By by Karl Friis Forchhammer, Messestraße Elf by Lenka Kerdová and a short film about a mysterious object situated in the middle of a forest called They Flew There with Zeppelin by Viktorie Lörinczová. The latter two together with the winner of My Street Films Ukraine, The Bridge, will be presented at 2:30 PM today, October 26, by the authors themselves at DKO 2.
