1. A forest is a community with a lots of organisms plants and animals, which are depended on each other. Old foresters spoke about a forest spirit. They expressed in this way that all compoments in a forest coexist and none of them can exist separately. http://www.mezistromy.cz/cz/les/les-jako-ekosystem Try to mark the Highland region on the map. How would you describe forests here compared To other regions? A map of forests in CZ in 2009
Compared to other European countries our forests are not bad, because only Finland, Sweden and Austria have more forests. Most of our covers are agriculutural forests. Forests are planted and we call them spruce monocultures. Encyklopedie naší pøírody, Miloš Andìra, Slovart, 2000

2. A forest from lowlands to mountains. In this chapter we will have a look at different types of forests, which originated in natural conditions of our republic. Step by step you can find out that all forests are not the same and specific kinds of organisms appear only in specific types of forests. Have a look at the pictures and fill them in the empty spaces according to the forest types.

5. Baby animals What will you do if you find a deer baby animal in a forest, on a clearing or a on a meadow? An ostensibly abandoned deer baby animal Calves of red deers are born at the begining of summer they hear when they are born, they can see, have hair, they are able to follow their mother. A calf is able to stand on it`s feet in a half an hour after the birth. It is difficult at the begining so it has to rest a lot. A red deer doesn`t stay at the calf not to attract attention, but they are in a permanent contact with a gentle whistling.
6.
An anthill Have a look at a model of an anthill or an ant`s aquarium. The biggest anthills are more than one meter high, they extend deep in the earth and they persist on one place over ten years. There is a maze of tunnels and small rooms covered with a pile of leaves, needles and branches in the underground.

A hierarchy in an anthill Ants have to fulfil a lot of tasks, their descriptions ants bring in a genetic information at their birth. The future of descendants determines a queen during eggs laying. From some of them hatch nannies which care for pupas and maggots, other ones will work as workers and some of females takes over a role of soldiers which will protect an anthill against invaders. Males are the last ones in a line and their only task is to fertilize the queen during the wedding flight. The gueen loses it`s wings and founds a new colony, alternatively it penetrates a foreign nest to kill it`s queen and takes over the reign. Http://oko.yin.cz/12/mravenec-lesni/

Ants and aphids inseparable friends Aphids suck juice of an invaded plant, which is full of sugar. They excrete a redundant sweet nectar out of their bodies in a substance of glutinous honey. The honey lures ants because it comprises 50% of their diet. In return for a sweet delicacy they provide to aphids protection against insect`s predators and for aphids` eggs they offer a safe overwintering in their nests. In spring they carry out the eggs on the plants to develop a new population and they can taste the sweet honey again. http://www.chovatelka.cz/svet-zvirat-clanek/mravenci-a-msice-ziji-v-symbioze-12
