Internal logic in a movie isn’t a prerequisite – it should be, but it isn’t. Many films (far, far too many films) are slapdash in their plotting; their heroes save the day despite the fact that it’s usually unearnt, unbelievable, and ultimately, uninteresting. Pixar go in a markedly different direction. Their stories are tied to character, and their characters are tied to their stories – and never more so than in their latest. Pete Docter and Ronnie del Carmen’s Inside Out tells the story of Riley, and Riley’s emotions. When the young girl’s family is forced to relocate, her emotions have a hard time dealing with it – quite literally, as we see her emotions as literal representations in her mind, or, rather, in “Headquarters”. She’s controlled by five different emotional states: Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black) and Disgust (Mindy Kaling). With the upheaval of moving to a new city, going to a new school, and training with a new ice hockey team, Riley struggles to be what her parents expect: ever-happy and ever-adjustable. In Headquarters, Sadness begins to taint Riley’s

stored memories – glowing orbs which, up until recently, had mostly borne the bright yellow touch of Joy. When Riley finally buckles under her parents’ expectations, Joy and Sadness find themselves jettisoned into the furthest reaches of Riley’s mind. By distancing those emotions she manages, for a time, to deal with the changes happening around her. But when guided solely by Anger, Fear and Disgust, she soon finds herself at risk of making a terrible decision. Every new Pixar film is an event. Even lesser Pixar films (such as the Cars films) are noteworthy affairs, as each one has care and attention lavished upon its every detail. With their latest they have developed an idea so simple, so elegant, that it’s amazing no one has done it before. We’ve been inside a character’s mind before (see: Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich and Christopher Nolan’s Inception for the previous most ingenious journeys into the psyche), but this is the first time we’ve had a film truly get to grips with the workings of the mind. Its discussion of core memories,

its musings on the role of imagination (and even imaginary friends), its examination on how our emotions interrelate and shape our outlook, and even shape how we grow up, are examples of some of the best writing you’re likely to see all year. But what really makes this latest Pixar animation so impressive (at least for this film critic) is how the scriptwriters (Meg LeFauve, Josh Cooley and Docter) don’t casually throw obstacles in the path of Riley and her emotions. What happens to Riley in both her internal and external worlds is organic and logical. However much you might think that must be the norm in storytelling, let me assure you, it’s really not. Take a ride inside Riley’s mind by catching Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out on board today! Film tidak membutuhkan logika internal – seharusnya begitu, tetapi tidak demikian. Some films shouldn’t exist. They defy convention, work against everything Hollywood understands, sit so far outside the system’s comfort zone that the studios ought to have been physically repelled by the prospect of throwing even a single dollar at it, let alone tens of millions. Despite all that, George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road got made. And we should all be very, very happy about that. Miller’s original Mad Max trilogy came to an end 30 years ago, and those who hoped for a continuation to Max’s journey stopped expecting it a long time ago. And yet here it is. The story opens at full tilt, and stays that way: a rebel, Furiosa (Charlize Theron), flees from her canyon-like township and its tyrannical ruler, Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne). Amongst the things she takes with her on her flight across the desert are a huge gas tanker, a number of guns and bullets, and, most importantly, her ruler’s wives. Immortan Joe and his War Boys – young men decked out to look like death personified – head out into the irradiated


desert in a massive convoy, quickly bearing down on Furiosa. Strapped to the front of one of the vehicles is our titular hero (Tom Hardy replacing Mel Gibson’s original Max), whose comparatively untainted blood is being used to revivify a War Boy (a disfigured and twitchy Nicholas Hoult). There’s little else you need to know. Joe is after Furiosa, and Max is stuck between the pair. For two hours Joe gives chase, and it’s thrilling. It’s also very unconventional: Hardy’s taciturn Max is often sidelined in favour of Furiosa and the women she’s protecting, making him, in effect, a sidekick in his own film. Furthermore, although the film’s structure technically has three acts, it’s really just one: an almost endless chase of beautiful insanity, in which electric guitars spew flames; War Boys balance on pikes atop their cars, swinging like pendulums; and super-hurricanes decimate what remains of the landscape. All is chaos in Max’s world, but Miller makes it a controlled chaos. What sets Fury Road apart from the other big movies of 2015 is how tactile its effects

are. There are moments where Miller has to rely on CGI to sell his mad vision – most notably with the super-hurricanes – but practically everything else is created using old-fashioned stunt and effects work. The cars spiralling out of control and being ripped to pieces in the midst of the mad chase are actually being spun out of control and ripped to pieces. The War Boys balancing on huge pikes, or jumping from car, to tanker, to car again, are actually doing just that. This adds immediacy and a sense of danger to a film already riding high on adrenaline induced by the story’s sheer momentum (both literal and figurative). With the film’s success in the cinemas, Miller is already prepping a return to the desert – but if we have to wait 30 years to get another film of this quality, it’ll be worth the wait. Spy is the latest comedic action movie from Hollywood’s favourite comedy director, Paul Feig. The story follows Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy), a desk-bound CIA analyst who craves adventure. After the identity of all the CIA’s agents is discovered by the formidable Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne), Susan volunteers to go undercover in order to infiltrate a dangerous arms deal and prevent a global crisis. McCarthy has already proven her excellent comedic qualities (see: Bridesmaids and The Heat). Her mixture of awkward timing and physical unpredictability makes her transformation from office assistant to killer spy a very funny one. McCarthy achieves this by fully committing to the silly and frequently rude scenes in the movie. Though her character is originally desk-bound, her background in CIA combat adds a fun and interesting dimension to her story. This isn’t about a naive newbie learning the ropes; this movie is about a talented, shy agent learning to get her confidence back. The supporting cast is a spoof’s dream come true: Byrne is terrific as the sexy villainess, and her rapport with McCarthy is electric; Jude Law is a perfect fit for Bradley Fine, an amusing spin on the James Bond-type spy, who’s more focused on looking good than on doing his job; and Jason Statham as Rick Ford, a tough-as-nails agent prone to expounding about his legendary prowess in the field, shows Statham is funnier – and more self-aware – than any of us imagined. Considering Spy is primarily a comedy, the action sequences are surprisingly exciting

and thrilling. Perhaps most surprising of all is how believable McCarthy is in her fight scenes. Feig has done a great job of creating a comedy espionage film that’s one part comedy, one part action, and one part spybased thrills. Spy has a lot in common with the tone of comedy spy movies like Austin Powers and Johnny English, but having a female lead mixes things up more than enough to keep things fresh. McCarthy utterly embraces her sweet, yet potentially dangerous, desk-bound analyst, and she’ll have you hooked from the moment she graces the screen. ‘Spy’ adalah film aksi komedi terbaru dari sutradara komedi Hollywood, Paul Feig. Way back in 1984, Arnold Schwarzenegger gave what is still regarded as his careerdefining performance when he appeared from thin air, naked (due to the constraints of the time travel machine that sent him through time), and yet somehow still exuding the implacability and relentless strength that we would come to associate with the term “Terminator”. His killer robot was sent back from the year 2029 to assassinate Sarah Connor in an attempt to prevent the birth of her unborn son John, who is destined to lead the fight against the machines.

The cast does well, especially considering how iconic some of the roles are considered to be: playing the highly capable Sarah Connor is rising star Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones), giving a more modern spin to the character, best exemplified by the quips she throws at her protector Terminator; Jai Courtney steps into the shoes of Kyle Reese, a decidedly less wiry version of the character that Michael Biehn once played; and we are even treated to a surprise return of the T-1000 from Terminator: Judgement Day, previously played with reptilian-like menace by Robert Patrick.

As the fight with Skynet nears its bloody conclusion, John Connor knows that there is only one more thing left to do: send a determined Kyle Reese back to 1984 in order to protect his mother and his own conception, as this will allow the circle to be complete and pave the way for his future self to destroy Skynet once and for all. Except that the timeline has been tinkered with, and Reese goes back into a 1984 that’s a little out of true with the one he was expecting. Schwarzenegger’s Terminator has somehow become the sole protector of the Connor family and their legacy, creating a new timeline.

So prepare yourself for the action and catch Terminator Genisys on board today!

Hong Kong film-maker Daniel Lee’s Dragon Blade, which was released during the Chinese New Year, is Jackie Chan’s latest blockbuster, and it’s a decidedly crosscultural affair, as it also includes Hollywood stars Adrien Brody and John Cusack. Beginning in 48BC, the film opens with Lucius (John Cusack), a Roman general, fleeing to the east to escape from the corrupt Emperor Tiberius (Adrien Brody), who killed his father and poisoned his younger brother – the heir of the ruling Roman Consul – all so that he could usurp the throne. Lucius seeks sanctuary at a frontier fort on the Silk Road, and crosses paths with Huo An (Jackie Chan), the ex-commander of the Protection Squad of Western Regions for the Han Dynasty, who has been sent to a labour camp on the outskirts of China. Tiberius aims to gain control of the Silk Road and has almost accomplished his goal, which has required him to conquer 36 nations. Huo An and Lucius decide to form an alliance against the tyrant. They gather an army and fight Tiberius’ troops. An epic battle begins. At $65 million this is one of the most expensive films ever made in China, and that expense is definitely up there on the screen. Whether we are looking at the ruins of a city, Huo’s village, or the Roman Empire, every detail is meticulously designed and created, whilst the large-scale battle scenes are


almost breathtaking in their vastness. The film has been a passion project for Adrien Brody and Jackie Chan for many years, with Chan having hoped to make it well before now. Making the production a more difficult one than usual was the fact that the crew had to deal with the extreme challenges of shooting in the harsh climate of the Gobi Desert. Lee’s film has the feel of a fantasy drama, albeit one with a historical backdrop, making it comparable to the similarly themed Gladiator and the rather ostentatious 300. All told, Dragon Blade is a fitting addition to the genre. Both the husband Tyo (Lukman Sardi), a famous film director, and the wife Tania (Dian Sastrowardoyo), a manager at a prestigious bank, are workaholics. They’ve been married for many years and have a lovely five-year-old child, Celine, but they don’t have the luxury of spending quality time together due to their packed schedules. Usually they only see each other fleetingly in the morning, briefly in the evening, or (if they’re really lucky) in snatches during the weekend. Even so, Tyo and Tania are still doing their best to spend time together as a family – particularly for the sake of Celine. One day Tyo passes out whilst at a shoot, apparently due to over-exhaustion, and is sent to hospital immediately. Meanwhile, Tania can’t take time off from her work. She has to juggle her office life, home life and visits to the hospital, as she fulfils multiple roles: senior officer at her job, responsible mother at home, and a loving wife, now looking after her husband. In this month’s episode of ‘Exotic Living’ we visit Candra Naya, a heritage building which was the former residence of Major Khouw Kim An, in Jakarta Indonesia. The building is in the typical style of Chinese architecture and occupies an area of 2,250 square meters. It includes several main areas: • A common space for receiving guests. • An office for Khouw Kim An, which consists of a terrace and a reception room. • A semi-private space for acquaintances to use when they come and stay. The room is separated from the public space with a ‘page’ (or ‘Tian Jing’) - an architectural term in traditional Chinese houses - it’s a small empty space that connects rooms; this is done so that the rooms can have more light and air. • A two-storey building at the back includes bedrooms on both floors. This building served as a living space for the kitchen maid, concubines, and children. It’s often referred to as a ‘wing-building’. • Page rooms at Candra Naya are made to face the main courtyard in the middle of the building.

• The main courtyard in front of the wingbuilding is equipped with a gazebo. The building also has other special architecture elements that are often found in Chinese architecture, such as a “Moon Gate”, “Ba Gua”, “Lingzhi Fungi” and other elements, which enhance its cultural heritage value and importance. MILES DAVIS – TUTU There are some things in life which are burnt into your memory – things that one small trigger will enable you to recall in seemingly infinite detail as if it were yesterday. Whilst reviewing this month’s albums I had just such a reminiscence, as simply hearing the name “Miles Davis” can cause me to recall the exact moment when I discovered the outstanding jazz musician.

At the time I discovered him I was being lazy, I couldn’t be bother to find another album to put on, so I just played the record that was already on the turntable, which was a copy of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue. I was transfixed, and can still visualise being sat on the sofa, staring at the record player while the rest of my family carried on with their daily tasks. It was an introduction to

a style of music that has shaped my musical tastes ever since.

developed connections with other great works by the always incredible Miles Davis.

One of the albums we have selected for you this month is Miles Davis’ 1986 release Tutu, for which Miles received a Grammy Award for Jazz Soloist. Originally planned as a collaboration between Miles Davis and Prince, it ultimately changed direction and became a project with multi-instrumentalist Marcus Miller. Miles’ signature trumpet is prevalent, as you would expect, and he shows his versatility throughout. The album is steeped in the sounds of its time, dabbling in jazz-funk, and making use of slapped bass and synth drums, all of which quickly mark it as a creation of the mid 80s. The title of the album comes from Archbishop Desmond Tutu, the first black Archbishop of Cape Town, South Africa; the album also features the track “Full Nelson”, which refers to the politician Nelson Mandela and the changes that were afoot in South Africa at the time.
