Fundamental Study of a Greenhouse Gas Emission-free Energy System KU Leuven Abstract: The emission of CO2 as the most important greenhouse gas may be reducedby avoiding the use of fossil fuels and, if the latter is not possible,by limiting its use and capturing and sequestering CO2. In the present research proposal the aim is to investigate in a fundamental way the question whether it is possible to supply all end energy as demanded by theoverall society, without emitting any greenhouse gas. As a key element of the study, the "tension field" between centralised production of useful end-energy "products", on the one hand (including transport, distribution and storage of those carriers), and distributed (i.e., local) production on the other hand, has to be addressed in a profound way. Especially interactions on the system#s scale between different energy sources, energy carriers and energy services to be provided to society must be addressed and carefully dealt with. . Organisaties: • Afd. Toeg. Mechanica & Energieconversie

The comparison of power system reliability criteria.

Characterization and Optimization of Remote Phosphor LEDs KU Leuven Abstract: LED technology is being integrated massively into general lighting due to its long lifetime, high efficiency, and facility to be used in new lighting designs. For indoor lighting, the technology has already achievedefficiency values comparable with conventional sources. However, in order to become the leading technology in decorative, indoor, outdoor and street lighting applications, it still needs to create a breakthrough with respect to luminous flux under a low colour correlated temperature (CCT), colour rendering index (CRI), colour spatial uniformity and cost among other user-relevant characteristics. As general lighting applications require white light, two different approaches for using LEDs have been introduced: a combination of RGB LEDs, and the excitation of a long-wavelength emission phosphor (yellow, green and/or red) with blue or nearUV LEDs. The former approach is not the most efficient, as the efficiency in the production of green light based on InGaN technology is rathe Organisaties: • Afdeling ESAT - ELECTA

Search for a better glare metric for non-uniform light sources KU Leuven Abstract: Leds (and in the near future Oleds) are becoming more important, especially in industry, but problems arise when this new technologies is implemented. Glare occurs when surfaces have a higher luminance than which the eye is adapted to. Glare causes an uncomfortable or unpleasant feeling. Disability glare impairs the vision of an object and reduces visual tasks. Discomfort glare causes a sensation of annoyance or pain but does not necessarily affect visual performance. With glare we mean discomfortglare. The methods currently used to determine glare, like the UnifiedGlare Rating (UGR,[CIE_1995]) or the Visual Comfort Probability (VCP,[IESNA_2000]), are developed for classical light sources (such as incandescent lamps or flood lights). These methods are not valid for determiningglare from non-uniform light sources such as Leds. Most formulas for determining glare have factors depending on the background luminance, the luminance and the solid angle of the light sources and the position Organisaties: • Afdeling ESAT - ELECTA

Tools for Enhanced Photovoltaic (PV) System Performance: Integrated Energy Management and Storage Control KU Leuven Abstract: The aim of this PhD is to improve the competitiveness of PV on the system level. This will be achieved by optimising the system as a whole rather than the separate components only. Common practice PV system operations today do not include integrated energy management or electricity storage. The recent introduction of a premium for self-consumption in Germany has triggered some R&D activities with a focus on residential PV, mainly with local battery storage. For energy management with PV and controllable thermal demand, some theoretical studies are available, however, only very few results have been put into practice. Most control methods for energy management are rule-based. Consequently, their performance is suboptimal because they do neither anticipate short-term irradiance or temperature variations nor local demand. Better results can be achieved with optimal control and, as a sub-method, model-predictive control (MPC). MPC has been successfully applied to thermal systems like h

To achieve this objective, the research question is divided into subtasks which cover a broad range of the key aspects in network characteristics and economic implications.
1.Development of transnational dynamic PTDF: In the previous research conducted by the author, the methodology of dynamic zonal PTDF was developed and successfullyvalidated on the New England Test system for more accurate cross-borderpower flow estimation. The procedures of constructing dynamic zonal PTDF can be followed in this subtask:
a.Divide the subzones by trial anderror method to obtain an acceptable number of subzones and yet providesatisfying accuracy in cross-border flow estimation.
b.Calculate theyearly power flow with the hybrid grid with given UC-ED result.

Optimital design of compact and micro heat exchangers. Dynamic Efficiency Analysis of Direct Current Distribution Networks KU Leuven Abstract: The penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) in the electricaldistribution network is expected to increase significantly, as promotedby the European Union (SET plan-establishes an energy technology policyfor Europe; a strategic plan to accelerate the development and deployment of cost-effective low carbon technologies). The present distribution network has a radial structure where the electrical energy flows from the top (medium voltage network) towards the end consumer. However, the existing distribution network is not designed for bidirectional energy flows which will be caused by the distributed energy resources and the everincreased demand. Aside from this, requires the free electricity-marketa higher level of controlability of the power flows in the electrical system.
The power electronic revolution enabled an easy manipulation and control, even in the event of faults, of DC as well as AC voltages. It basically allowed the implementation of DER into the electrical netw Organisaties: • Afdeling ESAT - ELECTA

Geen Nederlandstalige Titel KU Leuven Abstract: The use of electroplated Cu is currently being investigated as a replacement of the standard Ag screen printed front side metallization in cSisolar cells. Apart from the obvious lower raw metal cost, other benefits of Cu the potential for increasing the efficiency by reducing the front surface shading area, lowering the overall resistance and limiting therecombination losses. Despite the advantages, due to the required 20 to25 years of customers warranty, the module manufactures are still rather reluctant for introducing such new materials with an unknown track record of in the field performance. Therefore, further investigation of thereliability is still needed before industrialization can occur. In general, the qualification procedure for PV modules involves the application of standardized test protocols (IEC-standards). For new technologies like Cu-metalized cells, other degradation mechanisms may become more dominant and current qualification tests may no longer be relevant. Study of wind-farm ABL interaction based on wind-tunnel experiments KU Leuven Abstract: ith the recognition that wind energy will become an important contributor to the world#s energy portfolio, wind farms are expected to cover increasingly large surface areas. At these scales, wind farms significantlyslow down the Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) wind velocities at turbine height, leading to a large reduction of available power. At the same time, turbulent interactions between the ABL and wind turbines, and wakeinteractions between turbines, lead to increased power variability, andstructural loading, reducing turbine lifetimes and increasing costs. Therefore, if future wind-energy targets are to be met, new approaches to improving the cost-efficiency of energy extraction from the ABL by wind farms are necessary. This PhD research aims at the testing of new turbine placement patterns, and control strategies for large wind-turbine arrays. To that end, miniature turbine arrays are deployed in a wind-tunnel environment, and measurements are performed using hot-wire anemometr Organisaties: • Afd. Toeg. Mechanica & Energieconversie

Kesterite materials for In-free thin-film solar cells KU Leuven Abstract: Next to Si-based solar cells, devices based on chalcogenide thin films, such as CdTe and Cu(In,Ga)(Se,S)2 (CIGS), are at the forefront in thin film solar cell technology. However, reliance on the heavy metal Cd and on the non abundant elements In and Te presents a major barrier towards meeting the multi-terawatt-scale target for renewable energy supplied byphotovoltaics. Moreover, Thin Film-PV has to compete with present efficiencies of silicon solar cells above 20%. Therefore, multi-junction TF-PV solutions will be needed in the future.
Kesterite CZTS and CZTSe is an emerging alternative chalcogenide solar cell absorber that providesdiversification away from the non-earthabundant elements mentioned above and has the promise of the development of a multi-junction TF solar cell.
