A) Education in the Czech Republic • The compulsory education takes 9 years, (from the age of 6 to the age of 15). … but, before that, for little children there is:
Stage 1:
Kindergarten
(Czech Rep.) Children may attend (go to) kindergarten from the age of 3 to 6.
Stage 2:
Primary school 6 - 15
When children are 6 (years old), they start attending (going to) primary school. Some may leave it at 11 to go over to grammar school while
others stay at primary school until they are 15.
Stage 3:
Secondary school 15 - 19
Students may go to: vocational school and specialize to start a job SOŠ
or
go to general school to prepare for university studies.
Maturita Exam = Graduation Exam • Most students take the maturita exam when they are 19. At our school they take it in: Special P.E. (judo, karate and self-defence), in Czech, in English or Russian or Maths, and in Law.
Stage 4: •
University
If you pass your maturita exam, you may continue your education at university. You may choose your branch of study according to your interests, e.g. sciences, economics, law, sport, languages etc.
B) … in the United Kingdom • Stage 1: Nursery (kindergarten), age 3 – 5 • Stage 2: Primary school, age 5 – 11 • Stage 3: Secondary school, age 11 – 16 Compulsory education takes 11 years in the UK (from 5 to 16) (While it is only 9 years in the Czech Republic!)
• Stage 4: University (18 + )
GCE exams – taken at 16 General Certificate of Education
Students in the UK take GCE exams when they are 16 to finish their compulsory education.
GCE A-levels - taken at 18 Advanced level
• They are the equivalent of our maturita exam. (GCE A-levels = our maturita exam)
In the Czech Republic Answer the questions: 1. Do you like going to school? Why? 2. What subjects do you have? 3. What stages of school are there in the CR? 4. What time do you usually start and finish school every day? 5. How long does it take you to get to school? 6. Will you continue your education after the maturita exam?
Answers: 1. Yes, I quite like going to school./No, I don´t like going… because it is too much work, it is boring, but I like some subjects, e.g. P.E. ….. 2. We have general subjects like Maths, Czech, English, Russian, Biology, Geography, History, but also special P.E. (physical education), criminology etc. 3. There is kindergarten, primary school, secondary school and university in the CR. 4. I usually start school at 7.10 am but sometimes later. I finish at about 3 pm.

I hope to continue my education at university if I pass the entrance tests. / No, I won´t continue my education. I am going to find a job, but later I may take a course to improve my skills.
