Vaszary nagy Európa-járása közepette a nagy reformok indulásakor lett a Képzőművészeti Főiskola tanára, Lyka Károly kezdeményezésére, 1920-ban. 5
Master and pupil, the J ános Vaszar y, G yula H incz , K ároly R eich line … „I dwell with thee; though thou art far removed, Yet thou art near.” (Goethe)
Vaszarynál megmutatkozik a friss, üde rajzoló, aki útiélményeit is megörökíti, s kifejeződik munkáin a figura (figurák) iránti – egyébként egész munkásságában meghatározó – olthatatlan ábrázolókedve. Folyamatos lendületességén érződik szemlélete alakulása, változása, frissülése (kubizmushoz való időleges vonzalma), e lapjain is külön figyelemreméltó rajzi technikája válto-
zatossága (toll, tus, ceruza), s művei korszellemet mindig kifejező volta. Hincz művészeti sokarcúságát ez a rajzi anyag is felvillantja. Tudjuk, hogy a színes rajzoknak (is) mestere. Itt alig találunk színt, ám annál inkább tónus gazdag rajzokat, melyeken a tus lavírozásával szinte festői hatásokat kelt. Goethe A kedves közelléte című verséhez szinte szépségekben tobzódó rajzokat készített. In the past years the number of similar exhibitions has increased, on the other hand during their first years after graduation the young artists finishing their higher education don’t necessarily state anymore who their teacher was …Both tendencies are noticeable: the tradition that in the artistic formation one master plays a major role and also that this is later not of such an importance anymore. In a retrospective we can see that there are very good, constructive and productive master-pupil-connections and there are others, full of tension, when there is no understanding, no harmony. In such cases changes often could be made. Jenő Barcsay wrote for example, after mentioning that he was taken aback by Vaszary’s corrections: “but in the end this was not the reason why I parted company with master Vaszary. The reason was, I wished to do serious, longer lasting studies in drawings and in colours too.” It is well-known that this is how he got to Gyula Rudnay. It is interesting though, that Vaszary had no luck either with his original teacher. Right after his high-school graduation, he studied at the Hungarian Royal Drawing School and Art Teachers’ College and remembers later: “Beside Bertalan Székely’s unique culture, his acrimony, wiliness and permanent scepticism, he provoked rather an anxious feeling than encouraging me. He spared nobody with his sarcastic critique, but least of all the fashion like appearances – which added even more to the uneasiness.” This is how Vaszary moved forward, first to Munich, later Paris… Now we can see graphics by three masters, who with an age-difference of twenty-thirty years appeared in the Hungarian fine art, in a way that János Vaszary (1867-1939) was the teacher of Gyula Hincz (19041986) at the Hungarian Academy, who on his part was the teacher of Károly Reich (1922-1988) at the Academy of Applied Arts. An exciting connection, which we can certainly find with other names too. But now – in the course of the exhibition in the Koller Gallery – with the curatorial principle, the connection to the graphical works, the drawings come into focus.
6
In the midst of Vaszary’s journey through Europe, he became a teacher at the Academy of Arts at the beginning of the great reforms, on the initiative of Károly Lyka, in 1920. By this time he was already a prominent painter-personality, and with the older Rippl-Rónai and the younger István Csók an original representative of the individual, Frenchlike picturesqueness with great influence. Also his teaching is characterized by the fact, that his pupils who learned from him over shorter or longer periods, are later renovators of Hungarian painting, such as Tamás Lossonczy, Tihamér Gyarmathy, Dezső Korniss, Erzsébet Vaszkó, György Szegedy-Maszák, Menyhért Tóth or Vladimír Szabó, but also Margit Anna and Endre Bálint belonged to his scholars. Also Géza Bene, Jenő Gadányi, Pál Miháltz and most certainly Gyula Hincz should be mentioned, who was Vaszary’s student in the twenties of the last century while learning from Rudnay too. Hincz appreciated his teacher a lot. He puts it exquisitely into words: “The principle of his teaching: representation of nature and art are two different worlds. The former is an introductory part, which one should master. The latter is the essence: expression of opinion, the composition of the spirit of the age, at the same time its control, ethical behaviour with its aesthetic rules. In one word, art. He demanded a lot, but in a good way.” The teaching career of Gyula Hincz began at the Academy of Applied Arts in 1946, where he taught till 1949, he was than a teacher for 15 years at the Academy of Fine Arts; in 1958 he became the director of the Academy of Applied Arts. He was also a teacher with great influence, whose pupils where graphical artist who were just about to start their career and later became outstanding artists (Ferenc Töreky, János Kass, Nándor Szilvásy, Kálmán Csohány, Mihály Gácsi, Ádám Würtz, György Kemény or Rafael Ábrahám). On the other hand he had painter-students (for shorter or longer periods), who defined a new constructivistical approach such as István Csík, Pál Gerzson, József Baska, 7
János Fajó or Endre Lukoviczky not to mention Gyula Konkoly, László Gyémánt or István Nádler. Károly Reich was the student of Hincz at the Academy of Applied Arts from 1946 on. It is well known, that war interrupted Reich’s studies, which he resumed afterwards. It was at this time, when the meaningful relation with György Konecsni began, and beside Hincz also Ernő Kállai and György Domanivszky were his teachers. Károly Reich was not teaching, but he spread knowledge all the more, because he illustrated around 500 books after all, mainly for the youth and he participated on numerous author-reader events… Vaszary and Hincz were progressive painter personalities, both familiar with many techniques and genres. And Károly Reich was the bucolic magician of Hungarian drawings. What connects them in addition to what was already mentioned, is the depth of their graphics and drawings, the intensity, from which now an excellent selection of quality can be seen at this exhibition. Vaszary’s works show the agile, fresh way of a graphic artist, who also eternalizes his experiences of a journey, and his works express the constant wish to depict the figure(s) - his whole oevre is defined by this desire. The development, the change of his view (his temporary affection towards cubism) can be seen in
the constant liveliness, particular attention should be paid also on this works to the diversity of his drawing techniques (pen, ink, pencil) and the zeitgeist is always expressed by his works. This selection of drawings underlines the artistic diversity of Hincz’s works. We know that he is (also) the master of coloured drawings. We merely find colour here, but drawings rich in tone all the more, on which the specially applied ink creates quasi picturesque effects. A broad range of human emotions are shown to us, mingled with social interests. The illustrations of Krúdy show an aspect which he also demonstrated in his children’s book illustrations. We see more known works from Reich, on which the most important themes of these days are in focus: the family, our roots, love, women and the horse. The emotional genius of the line, whose one-line-drawings are related to Vaszary’s nudes. He created drawings so full of beauty for Goethe’s poem Love’s Nearness. The poem is a beautiful confession of a man to his beloved one and the author of these lines choose at the beginning (maybe arbitrarily) the two verses of the poem as a theme. We see the works of three men, but it is true that even if their souls are far from each other, through this exhibit and – we should add – through their work, they are still closely connected.
