Photo: The reference to Vlissingen in the Netherlands above the entrance door.
Vlissinghe has been a tavern since 1515. The first landlord was Jan Brey. However, the building itself is older. The owners can be traced back to 1485 and beyond. The oldest known owner is Jacob de Wulf, but it is not clear whether he also used the building as a tavern.
Where does the name come from? It might refer to a small pond (‘flessche’ in Dutch) next to a sand dune (‘blekker’ in Dutch). Café Vlissinghe was located in the street known as Blekkerstraat, later incorrectly translated from French. Or maybe there is a connection with the Dutch town of Vlissingen? The painting above the door of the tap room seems to leave little room for doubt... 3

Overal verschijnen dezelfde porseleinen tapkranen. Later verdwijnen ook deze voor moderne installaties.
Did you know… it was not until the mid-1960s that beer-taps began to make their appearance in pubs. Before then, the customers drank bottled beer. The first taps were nearly all in porcelain, but these were later replaced by more modern installations.

It is certain that from 1553 until 1792 there was a brewery ‘Den Arend’ (The Eagle) nearby. In 1742, the owner, Pieter Frans Van Neste, bought Café Vlissinghe. He sold it sometime after 1771, but the historic tavern once again became the property of ‘Den Arend’, when it was bought in 1855 by Jacques De Meulemeester. He was also one of its most regular customers! He celebrated his 75th birthday in the Café in grand style and had the moment recorded for posterity by the painter Antoon Joostens. This painting still hangs above the fireplace.
Photo: Jacques De Meulemeester, 1879
In 1869, his son Léon transformed the Vlissinghe into a ‘Flemish beer-house’ and gave the tavern the interior we still largely know to this day. 7

The garden of Café Vlissinghe was for many years a meeting place for the aficionados of ‘ krulbollen’, a Flemish version of bowling, played with wooden discs that the players try to roll as close as possible to a wooden stake. A delightful painting by Antoon Joostens shows bowling being played at the Vlissinghe around 1880.
The two world wars put an end to this tradition and the site of the old bowling alley was later transformed into an area for the French bowling game of ‘petanque’. However, for the 500th anniversary of the tavern the old tradition of ‘ krulbollen’ has been revived. Why not have a go yourself? You can ask for the bowls behind the bar.

Did you know … according to legend, the first owners of Café Vlissinghe were ‘Old Teunis and his Wife’. Their portrait still hangs to the right of the fireplace. Some claim that they both lived to be a hundred years old and died on the same day.

Café Vlissinghe has always welcomed painters. Two works by Antoon Joostens (1820-1886) still hang in the tavern. Flori Van Acker (18581940) also found his inspiration here: the tavern was often the subject of his paintings, such as ‘The First Supper’, which you can still see in the taproom. 18
At the end of the 19th century, the Vlissinghe also became a ‘cabaret artistique’ and was the home base for a society of artists known as Kunstgenegen (The Art-lovers). They were given their own room, the ‘Museetje’ (Little Museum), where they gave lectures and exhibited their paintings. This room still exists, and looks almost exactly as it did in the years around 1900.
