lilith ‘Het paradijs is perfect, maar niet voor mij. Niet als ik in een hokje word geduwd. Niet als ik mezelf niet mag zijn.’ Via de figuur van Lilith vertelt Claron McFadden ons een verhaal over de relatie tussen een man en een vrouw, een verhaal over een vader en een dochter, maar vooral een verhaal over de gelijkheid van alle mensen en het accepteren van onderlinge verschillen. Lilith is een bekend personage in de joodse mythologie. De vroegste nog bestaande Europese vertelling over het ontstaan van Lilith vindt men in Het alfabet van Ben Sira, een vroeg joods commentaar op de bijbel uit de elfde eeuw. Het personage Lilith onderging verdere veranderingen tijdens de Middeleeuwen, in de traditie van de Aggada, de Zohar en de Kabbala. Twee primaire kenmerken komen in deze latere legenden over haar naar voren: Lilith als de incarnatie van lust, waardoor mannen verleid worden, en Lilith als een kinddodende heks, die hulpeloze pasgeborenen wurgt. Volgens Het alfabet is Lilith de eerste vrouw van Adam. In Genesis 1:27 staat: ‘man en vrouw schiep Hij hen.’ God creëert Lilith, de eerste vrouw, zoals Hij Adam maakt: uit puur stof. Maar Adam en Lilith vinden samen geen geluk en hebben een moeizame verstandhouding, omdat Lilith Adams aanspraak op diens superioriteit betwist. Als hij met haar wil slapen, neemt ze er aanstoot aan dat ze onder hem moet liggen. ‘Waarom zou ik onder je liggen,’ vraagt ze, ‘terwijl ik
je gelijke ben, aangezien wij beiden zijn gemaakt van stof?’ Adam probeert haar te dwingen tot gehoorzaamheid. In plaats van die onderwerping te accepteren, kiest Lilith ervoor om weg te gaan van Adam en het Paradijs. Ze spreekt de geheime naam van God uit, stijgt op in de lucht en vliegt weg naar de Rode Zee. Adam doet een beroep op God en Hij zendt drie engelen, Senoy, Sansenoy en Semangelof, om Lilith ervan te overtuigen terug te keren. Lilith verkiest een leven zonder partner boven het opgeven van haar integriteit en onafhankelijkheid. De engelen bedreigen haar met de dood, maar ze antwoordt: ‘Hoe kan ik sterven wanneer God mij heeft opgedragen om over alle pasgeboren kinderen te beslissen? Niettemin, als ik ooit jullie drie namen of beeltenissen zie in een amulet bij een pasgeboren kind, dat beloof ik om het te sparen.’ Hierover worden zij het eens, maar God straft Lilith door honderd van haar demonenkinderen dagelijks te laten omkomen. (Volgens een latere legende is Lilith bij de Rode Zee de minnares geworden van Samael, de duivel; zij houdt zich bezig met ongebreidelde promiscuïteit en baart meer dan honderd demonische nakomelingen per dag.)

God niet tussenbeide toen alles fout liep? Waarom is hij niet voor haar opgekomen? Maar vooral: waarom kreeg ze niet de tijd om er zelf achter te komen wie ze was en wat ze wilde en hoe ze wilde leven? Waarom werd ze zo vroeg in haar leven gedwongen tot de keuze om het paradijs te verlaten en eeuwig rond te zwerven? Vandaag komt ze een bar binnen om een man te ontmoeten. Hij is degene van wie Lilith antwoorden verwacht.
De naam Lilith heeft een lange maar schimmige geschiedenis in de mythologieën van het Midden-Oosten. Uiteenlopende etymologische verklaringen herleiden het woord tot de Semitische radicaal L-Y-L (‘nacht’), het Akkadische līlītu (‘geest’) of een associatie met wind via het Sumerische lil (‘lucht’). De figuur Lilith die later verschijnt in de joodse mythologie zou haar oorsprong hebben in een klasse van vrouwelijke stormdemonen uit de Assyrische traditie die jaagden op vrouwen en kinderen. Als vroegste vindplaats van de naam Lilith gold lange tijd het apocriefe ‘Tablet XII’ van het Gilgamesj-epos, maar die wordt tegenwoordig bestreden op basis van een vertaalfout. In deze passage wordt Lilith onder meer geassocieerd met de slang die de vruchtbaarheidsgodin Inanna aantreft in een boom in haar tuin.

In de joodse traditie duikt Lilith regelmatig op in belangrijke bronnen, van de rond het begin van onze jaartelling vervaardigde Dode Zeerollen tot de dertiende-eeuwse Spaanse Zohar, waarin de kabbala haar oorsprong vindt. Het woord ‘lilit’ komt slechts eenmaal voor in de Hebreeuwse bijbel, in de lijst van onreine dieren in Jesaja 34, waar het vertaald wordt als ‘nachtgedierte’ of ‘nachtspook’. Er bestaat geen consensus over de vraag of dit woord verwijst naar de figuur Lilith.
Claron McFaddens Lilith is gebaseerd op deze oude legenden. Het verhaal wordt verteld vanuit Liliths standpunt en begint lang na haar vlucht uit het paradijs. Lilith is sindsdien blijven rondzwerven. Het was overleven, maar vooral een eindeloze poging om antwoord te krijgen op de vraag: ‘Waarom?’
Het meest bekend is Lilith van de overlevering die haar ziet als de eerste vrouw van Adam. Genesis geeft twee versies van de schepping van de mens, waarvan de eerste luidt: ‘God schiep de

mens naar zijn beeld […]; man en vrouw schiep Hij hen.’ (Genesis 1:27) De tweede versie vertelt hoe God Eva schiep uit een ‘rib’ van Adam. In een bepaalde joodse traditie, waarvan de oudste bekende vorm gedateerd wordt op de achtste tot tiende eeuw na Chr., ziet men die twee versies als twee verschillende scheppingen. Aanvankelijk creëerde God man en vrouw gelijk, uit dezelfde klei. Deze vrouw was Lilith. Omdat zij gelijk aan Adam geschapen was, weigerde Lilith zich aan hem te onderwerpen, waarvoor ze gestraft werd met verbanning uit het paradijs.

In een andere, kabbalistische traditie, die teruggaat tot de zestiende eeuw, staat Lilith symbool voor zinnelijkheid en seksuele begeerte. Als een prototypische verleidster en femme fatale wordt ze vervolgens een geliefd motief in kunst en literatuur van de Romantiek. Goethe is in deze periode de eerste die haar noemt, in het eerste deel van Faust (1808), waar Mephistopheles haar aldus introduceert: ‘Lilith ist das. […] Adams erste Frau. / Nimm dich in acht vor ihren schönen Haaren, / Vor diesem Schmuck, mit dem sie einzig prangt! / Wenn sie damit den jungen Mann erlangt, / So läßt sie ihn so bald nicht wieder fahren.” (4117-4123) Goethe speelt eveneens met de legende die Lilith vereenzelvigt met de slang die Adam en Eva verleidde tot het eten van het verboden fruit van de boom der kennis van goed en kwaad.
‘Ik heb een fascinatie voor sterke vrouwen’
onderwerpen waarmee ik graag een keer iets wilde doen.’ Is Lilith een figuur waarin u al langer geïnteresseerd bent? ‘Eigenlijk is het allemaal heel intuïtief gegaan. Ik heb een fascinatie voor sterke, bijzondere vrouwen in de geschiedenis en de literatuur. Als ik ooit iets in mijn eentje zou gaan doen, dan wist ik dat het in elk geval iets rondom zo’n sterk vrouwelijk personage zou zijn. Een vriend vertelde me op een dag over Lilith, die ik helemaal niet kende, en ik dacht meteen: ha, dat is een interessante vrouw. Er bestaan zoveel verschillende mythen over haar, daar kun je heel veel in kwijt.
Claron McFadden over haar multimediale muziektheaterwerk Lilith Sopraan Claron McFadden heeft naam gemaakt met bejubelde prestaties in een groot aantal muzikale stijlen, van barokopera tot nieuwe muziek, van jazz en variété tot vrije improvisatie. Lilith is haar eerste voorstelling als maker. In samenwerking met pianist en componist Dimitar Bodurov, filmmaker Frans Weisz, acteur en zanger Jeroen Willems en de Zuid-Afrikaanse dichteres en librettiste Carola Luther, maakte McFadden een muziektheatervoorstelling over een tragische liefdesgeschiedenis. Hoofdpersoon is Lilith, de eerste vrouw van Adam.
‘In het oorspronkelijke idee fungeerde Lilith als een soort planeet waaromheen de satellieten van andere sterke vrouwen cirkelden. Het stuk zou Iron Maiden heten, met Lilith als centrale figuur en een aantal andere historische personages die verschillende aspecten van de vrouw zouden laten zien. Ik had een Engelse ketter gevonden, een Amerikaanse slavin, een prominente courtisane. Maar ik merkte al snel dat elk verhaal zo complex was, dat het niet mogelijk zou zijn ze allemaal in één stuk te vertellen. Dus heb ik het concept veranderd in ‘Iron Maiden Chronicles’; in een ideale wereld is Lilith, als hoofdpersonage, de eerste van een reeks portretten. Zij vertegenwoordigt alle aspecten die in een vrouw kunnen zitten, van goed en lief tot slecht en angstwekkend. Zij is buitengewoon fascinerend, evenals de manier waarop haar reputatie door de eeuwen heen veranderd is.’
Was het een lang gekoesterde wens om zelf een voorstelling te maken? ‘Het was altijd een wens van mij om iets te maken waarbij de artistieke verantwoordelijkheid helemaal op mijn schouders zou rusten. Vijftien of twintig jaar geleden zag ik een voorstelling van Hélène Delavault, de Franse zangeres die met Peter Brook in La tragédie de Carmen heeft gewerkt. Zij had een kleine show gemaakt met een pianist, heel simpel, een tafel, een stoel, asbak, sigaret, glas wijn. In die entourage zong ze liederen, hoofdzakelijk twintigste-eeuwse cabaretsongs. Ze vertelde over een stuk en dan begon ze te zingen. Dat was zo intiem en zo mooi, ik dacht: dat wil ik ook. Die combinatie van muziek en theater, een one woman show. Dat is de allereerste kern van dit idee. Bovendien was er een aantal

Hoe heeft u dat idee vervolgens uitgewerkt tot een voorstelling? ‘Ik wilde graag iets maken waarin ik alle 7
facetten van mijn eigen muzikale en theatrale persoonlijkheid kwijt kon. Door de jaren heen heb ik met zoveel mensen gewerkt en zoveel opgestoken, bijvoorbeeld van de manier waarop Guy Cassiers met video op het podium werkt – dat wilde ik ook. Interactie met beeld. Ik voel heel sterk dat de toekomst van het muziektheater multimediaal is. Bovendien wilde ik verschillende muziekstijlen laten horen: klassiek, jazz, en ook improvisatie. Ik wilde ook dat het een beetje edgy zou zijn. Als een voorstelling om 22.00 uur begint, heb je al een heel ander gevoel dan om 20.15 uur. Vervolgens heb ik het verhaal verder uitgedacht. De driehoeksverhouding tussen Lilith, God en Adam is erg interessant en die wilde ik onderzoeken. Jaloezie, woede, liefde: dat blijft actueel. Die emoties waren 5000 jaar geleden precies hetzelfde. Daarom speelt het verhaal zich af in een moderne omgeving.’ Kunt u uitleggen wat de uitgangssituatie van de voorstelling is? ‘God en Lilith zijn naar elkaar op zoek. Wie precies wie opzoekt laat ik in het midden. Telkens weer spelen ze hetzelfde scenario uit, maar ze komen niet tot elkaar. Om dat gevoel van beweging te illustreren is het verhaal gesitueerd in de bar van een 5-sterrenhotel op een vliegveld, met een pianist, chic maar eigenlijk heel triest, waar reizigers totaal gejetlagged rondhangen. In zulke bars zoeken God en Lilith elkaar op. Lilith wil uitleg, antwoorden: zij heeft het paradijs uit vrije wil verlaten omdat ze zich niet aan Adam wilde onderwerpen, terwijl zij in beginsel gelijkwaardig aan hem was. Lilith komt de bar binnen, drinkt wat en begint haar verhaal te vertellen tegen de pianist. Barpianisten fungeren vaak als een
soort klaagmuur. Er is ook een scherm, waarop een man geprojecteerd wordt die eveneens zijn verhaal doet: Adam. Soms reageert de pianist op dingen die gezegd worden, op een zodanige manier dat je je kunt afvragen of hij misschien een belang heeft in hun verhalen. Via flashbacks herbeleeft Lilith haar verhouding met Adam. Hij is niet live op het toneel aanwezig, hij verschijnt alleen op het projectiescherm, dat de vorm heeft van een groot bed. Lilith betreedt het domein van haar herinneringen door voor dat bed te gaan staan, zodat ze lijkt te worden opgenomen in de projectie. Adam is inmiddels gesettled, huisje-boompje-beestje, zijn kind zit op hockey; maar hij blijft maar praten over zijn ex-vriendin. Alsof hij zichzelf probeert te overtuigen. In zijn ziel weet hij dat Lilith zijn grote liefde was. ‘Voor Lilith geldt hetzelfde. Ze zoekt soelaas bij talloze mannen en keert steeds weer terug bij een demon van wie ze elke dag duizend kinderen baart. Het is een verhaal dat je zo vaak hoort: “Híj was mijn echte liefde, we konden niet samenleven, maar nu heb ik zus-en-zo, hij is zo’n goede vader, blabla…” ’

Als ik zo ijdel of naïef was geweest om te denken dat ik het allemaal zelf had gekund, was het waarschijnlijk een ramp geworden. Het is mijn stuk, maar ik werk samen met mensen die excelleren in hun vak. Mijn concept is het skelet; hoe dat precies wordt aangekleed, zoeken we samen uit.’

Is er verlossing voor Lilith? ‘Helemaal aan het einde zingt Lilith een klaaglied, als een soort Orfeus, treurend om de verloren geliefde. Ze zingt alle namen van Lilith door de eeuwen heen, wat in zekere zin werkt als katharsis. Nu zingt ze niet meer op muziek van de pianist, maar begeleidt ze zichzelf op een aquaphone, een bizar instrument dat ik heel graag wilde gebruiken. Soms klinkt het als walviszang, soms juist heel onheilspellend. Lilith heeft nooit de kans gekregen om haar eigen stem te ontwikkelen, en dat doet ze nu alsnog.’ door Joep Stapel
Lilith is a famous character in Jewish mythology. The earliest Extant European cosmogony of Lilith is in the Alphabeth of Ben Sira, an early Jewish commentary on the bible from the 11th century. The character of Lilith was greatly altered during the Middle Ages, in the tradition of Aggadic midrashim, the Zohar and the Kabala. Two primary characteristics are seen in these later legends about her: Lilith as the incarnation of lust, causing men to be led astray, and Lilith as a child-killing witch, who strangles helpless newborns. According to the Alphabeth, Lilith is Adam’s first wife. In Genesis 1:27 we read “male and female He created them.” God forms Lilith, the first woman, just as He had formed Adam, from pure dust. However, Adam and Lilith can find no happiness together, not even understanding because Lilith contests Adam’s claim to be supreme. When he wishes to lie with her, she takes offence at having to lie beneath him. “Why should I lie beneath you,” she asks, “when I am your equal, since both of us were created from dust?” Adam tries to force her obedience. Rather than accept subjugation, Lilith chooses to leave Adam and Paradise. She

Met Dimitar had ik meteen een enorme klik, we begrijpen elkaar precies. Hij kent alle Amerikaanse jazz, heel veel klassieke muziek, pop, zijn eigen Balkanmuziek en hij kan geweldig improviseren en componeren. Hij vertaalt mijn suggesties onmiddellijk in muziek. Lilith, Adam’s First Wife
utters the secret name of God, rises into the air, and flies away to the Red Sea. Adam appeals to God, and He sends forth three angels, Senoy, Sansenoy and Semangelof, to persuade Lilith to return. Lilith prefers life without a partner to giving up her integrity and independence. The angels threaten her with death for her refusal but she replies: “How can I die when God has ordered me to take charge of all newborn children. Nonetheless, if I ever see your three names or likenesses displayed in an amulet above a newborn child, I promise to spare it.” To this they agree but God punishes Lilith by making one hundred of her demon children perish daily. (According to yet another legend she becomes the mistress of Samael, the devil, by the Red Sea and engages in unbridled promiscuity and bares a demonic brood of more than one hundred a day.) Claron McFadden’s Lilith is based on these ancient legends. The story starts a long time after Lilith’s escape from paradise and is told from her point of view. She has been wandering ever since. Surviving but most of all trying to get an answer to the question “Why?” Why was she not allowed to find a balance between her and her partner? Why didn’t God intervene when everything turned bad? Why didn’t he stand up for her? But most of all: Why wasn’t she allowed to find out who she was and what she wanted and how she wanted to live in her own time? Why was she forced to choose so early in life to leave paradise and wander around eternally? Today she walks into a bar to meet a man. He is the one from whom Lilith expects an answer. The name ‘Lilith’ has a long but murky history in the mythologies of the Middle East. Different etymological explanations trace the word to the Semitic radical L-Y-L (‘night’), the Akkadian līlītu (‘spirit’) or an association with wind through the Sumerian lil (‘light’). The figure of Lilith that later appears in Jewish mythology and is said to have its origins in a class of female storm demons from the Assyrian tradition who hunted women and children. The earliest place where the name Lilith is mentioned was for a long time considered to be the apocryphal ‘Tablet XII’ of the Gilgamesh epic, but nowadays that is contested on the basis of a mistake in the translation. In this passage, Lilith is among other things associated with the snake that the fertility goddess Inanna discovers in a tree in her garden. In the Jewish tradition, Lilith regularly turns up in important sources, ranging from the Dead Sea Scrolls written around the beginning of the Christian era to the 13th-century Spanish Zohar, in which the Kabbalah has its origins. The word ‘lilit’ occurs only once in the Hebrew Bible, in the list of unclean animals in Isaiah 34, where it is translated as ‘night creature’ or ‘night wraith’. There is no consensus on the question of whether this word refers to the figure of Lilith. Lilith is most well-known through the tradition that sees her as the first wife of Adam. Genesis gives two versions of the creation of man, the first of which reads: So God created man in his own image… male and female he created them’ (Genesis 10

1:27). The second version relates how God created Eve out of a ‘rib’ taken from Adam. A certain Jewish tradition, whose oldest known form dates back to somewhere between the 8th and the 10th century A.D., sees these two versions as two different creations. God originally created man and woman as equals, taken from the same clay. This woman was Lilith. Because she was created equal to Adam, Lilith refused to defer to him, for which she was punished with banishment from Paradise.

In a different, Kabbalistic tradition, which goes back to the 16th century, Lilith is a symbol for sensuality and sexual desire. As a prototypical temptress and femme fatale, she subsequently became a beloved theme in Romantic art and literature. Goethe is the first to mention her in this period, in the first part of Faust (1808), where Mephistopheles introduces her thusly: ‘That’s Lilith… First wife to Adam. / Pay attention to her lovely hair, / The only adornment she need wear. / When she traps a young man in her snare, / She won’t soon let him from her care.’ (4117-4123) Goethe also plays with the legend that Lilith identifies with the snake that tempted Adam and Eve to eat the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. In mystical literature, Lilith became the queen of the demons and the wife of Satan. Nowadays she enjoys great popularity in spiritist and occult circles and often functions as a symbol of matriarchy. Some people believe they recognize her in the famous fresco La creazione di Adamo by Michelangelo in the Sistine Chapel, in which God stretches out his right hand to Adam. According to them, the woman he embraces with his left arm is Lilith. 11
Soprano Claron McFadden has made a name for herself with lauded achievements and a great number of musical styles, ranging from baroque opera to new music, jazz, music hall and free improvisation. Lilith is her first production as a theatre maker. In collaboration with pianist and composer Dimitar Bodurov, filmmaker Frans Weisz, actor and singer Jeroen Willems and the South African poet and librettist Carola Luther, McFadden has made a music theatre piece about a tragic love story. The main character is Lilith, Adam’s first wife. Was making a production of your own a longcherished wish? ‘I’ve always wanted to make something where the artistic responsibility would lie entirely on my shoulders. Fifteen or twenty years ago, I saw a piece made by Hélène Delavault, the French singer who worked with Peter Brook in La tragédie de Carmen. She had made a small show with a pianist; very simple: a table, chair, ashtray, cigarette, glass of wine. She told about a song and then she began to sing. It was so intimate and so beautiful, I thought: I want to do this too. This combination of music and theatre, a one-woman show. That was the very first basis of this idea. Besides that, there were a number of subjects that I had always wanted to do something with at some time or other.’ Is Lilith a figure you had already been interested in for a while?
‘Actually, it all went very intuitively. I have a fascination for strong, exceptional women in history and literature. I knew that if I ever did something on my own, it would in any case have to revolve around a strong female figure. A friend told me one day about Lilith, whom I had never heard of, and I immediately thought: Hey, now there’s an interesting woman. There are so many different myths about her that it gives you a chance to say a great deal. ‘In the original idea, Lilith functioned as a kind of planet, with the satellites of other strong women circling around her. The piece was going to be called Iron Maiden, with Lilith as the central character, and a number of other historic figures would show different aspects of the female. I had found an English heretic, an American slave, a prominent courtesan. But I very soon realized that each story was so complex that it wouldn’t be possible to include all of them in one production. So I changed the concept to the ‘Iron Maiden Chronicles’; ideally, Lilith, as the main character, is the first of a series of portraits. She represents all of the aspects a woman can have, from good and loving to bad and frightening. She is extremely fascinating, as is the way in which her reputation has changed throughout the centuries.’ How did you subsequently develop that idea into a production? ‘I wanted to make something in which I could use all aspects of my own musical and theatrical personality. I have worked with so many people throughout the years and learned so much, for instance, the way Guy Cassiers works with video on stage – I wanted to do that too: interacting with images. I feel very strongly that the
multimedia approach is the future of music theatre. What’s more, I wanted to include different styles of music: classical, jazz, and improvisation too. I also wanted it to be a bit edgy. If the show starts at 10 p.m., you already get a very different feeling than when it starts at 8:15. ‘Then I worked out the story further. The triangle between Lilith, God and Adam is very interesting, and I wanted to investigate that. Jealousy, anger and love always remain relevant. These emotions were exactly the same 5000 years ago. That’s why the story takes place in a modern setting.’ Can you explain the basic situation of the show? ‘God and Lilith are seeking one another. Exactly who is seeking who is left unclear. They play out the same scenario repeatedly, but they don’t meet up. In order to illustrate this feeling of movement, the story is situated in the bar of a five-star hotel at an airport, with a pianist – chic but actually very dreary, where totally jetlagged travellers hang out. This is the kind of bar in which God and Lilith are looking for one another. ‘Lilith wants an explanation, answers: she had left Paradise of her own free will because she did not want to defer to Adam while she was equal to him in principle. Lilith comes into the bar, has a drink and begins to tell her story to the pianist. Bar pianists often function as a kind of Wailing Wall. There is also a projection screen with a man who also tells his story: Adam. Sometimes the pianist reacts to things that are said in a way that made you wonder whether he might have an interest in their stories. ‘Through flashbacks, Lilith relives her relation with Adam. He is not a live presence on stage; he only appears on the 12
projection screen, which has the shape of a huge bed. Lilith enters the domain of her memories by standing in front of this bed, so that she seems to become part of the projection. By now, Adam has settled down; he leads a life of marital bliss in the suburbs, has a kid who plays hockey; but he still talks about his ex-girlfriend. As if trying to convince himself. In his heart, he knows that Lilith was his big love. ‘The same goes for Lilith. She seeks solace with countless men but always goes back to a demon, giving birth to a thousand children by him every day. It’s a story you hear so often: “He was my true love but we couldn’t live together; now I have so-and-so, he’s a good father, blah blah …” ’ How did the music for Lilith come about? ‘Dimitar Bodurov composed the music on the basis of our talks. He is the bar pianist. Dimitar and I hit it off right from the start, we understand each other completely. He is thoroughly versed in American jazz, knows a great deal of classical music, pop, his own Balkan music and he’s a great improviser and composer. He immediately translates my suggestions into music. On stage, he’s the one who makes it all work, who leads everything. At the dramatic core of the flashbacks, he gets all sorts of percussive sounds out of the piano, which he then samples live into a kind of Balkan beat in 7/8. It’s really terrific. ‘If I had been vain or naïve enough to think I could do it all by myself, this probably would have been a disaster. It’s my piece, but I work with people who excel in their field. My concept is the skeleton; precisely how it’s fleshed out is something we work together on.’ 13
Is there redemption for Lilith? ‘At the very end, Lilith sings a lament, as a kind of Orpheus, sorrowing for her lost love. She sings all the names of Lilith throughout the ages, which in a certain sense works as a catharsis. Now she no longer sings to the music of the pianist, but accompanies herself on an aquaphone, a bizarre instrument that I really wanted to use. Sometimes it sounds like the singing of whales, other times it’s very ominous. Lilith has never had the chance to develop her own voice, and she finally does this now.’ Joep Stapel

Biografieën Sopraan Claron McFadden is oorspronkelijk uit Amerika afkomstig, maar woont al lange tijd in Nederland. Ze studeerde in 1984 af aan de Eastman School of Music in New York en maakte in 1985 haar operadebuut op het Holland Festival in Hasses l’Eroe Cinese. Claron McFadden heeft sindsdien een grote reputatie verworven als operazangeres op het internationale podium, een ster die regelmatig te zien is in wereldpremières met zowel barok als modern repertoire. Claron McFadden werkte met orkesten en ensembles zoals het London Philharmonic Orchestra, het BBC Symphony Orchestra, het Residentie Orkest, het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, The King’s Consort, het Münchener Kammerorchester, Ensemble intercontemporain en Ensemble Modern. Ze heeft opgetreden met dirigenten als Kurt Masur, Sir Andrew Davis, Hartmut Haenchen, Frans Brüggen, Marc Minkowsky, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Neëme Jarvi en Fabio Biondi, in zalen zoals Het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Mozarteum, Großer Saal en de Royal Albert Hall in Londen, het Théâtre du Châtelet in Parijs, het Gewandhaus in Leipzig, en op de grote podia in New York City en Tanglewood in de Verenigde Staten, Polen, Duitsland en Japan. McFadden heeft rollen vertolkt in producties van internationaal bekende operahuizen zoals het Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, De Nederlandse Opera, Teatro alla Scala en het Théâtre des ChampsElysées. Haar brede oriëntatie blijkt uit de keur aan producties waarin zij heeft gezongen, van Mozart tot Vivier en van Purcell tot Tippett. Ze heeft vele cd-opnamen

In 2006 kreeg McFadden de Amsterdamprijs voor de Kunsten uitgereikt. Dimitar Bodurov (1979) is een Bulgaarse jazzpianist, componist en producer. Hij woont in Nederland. Bodurov heeft een solide achtergrond in zowel jazzimprovisatie als klassieke compositie, maar hij is het meest bekend om het inbedden van invloeden van Bulgaarse folklore in zijn muziek. Als pianist heeft hij diverse cd’s op zijn naam staan. De Volkskrant selecteerde zijn cd Stamps from Bulgaria met het Bodurovtrio voor de Top 10 Nederlandse albums in 2008. Zijn project voor duet Neofobic werd in 2010 uitgebracht door de vermaarde Noorse pianist en producer Bugge Wesseltoft. Bodurov heeft over heel Nederland concerten gegeven, en ook in Duitsland, Oostenrijk, België, Luxemburg, Frankrijk, Ierland, Macedonië en Bulgarije opgetreden. Hij heeft samengewerkt met de top van de internationale jazz, waaronder Randy Brecker, Rick Margitza en Didier Lockwood. Bodurov heeft verschillende onderscheidingen in ontvangst mogen nemen. In de afgelopen jaren won hij onder meer de Young Pianist Foundation Jazz Competition in 2007 en kreeg hij een eervolle vermelding op de Martial Solal Jazz Piano International Competition in 2010. Als componist schrijft Bodurov voornamelijk kamerwerken voor diverse ensembles. Hij heeft opdrachtwerk geschreven voor onder meer het Gergiev Festival in Rotterdam, Sofia Music 28
Weeks International Festival en Musique Classique Amiens. In 2011 schreef Bodurov de muziek voor GAP – een muzikale dansvoorstelling van de LeineRoebana Dansgroep uit Amsterdam. Frans Weisz (1938) is een Nederlandse film- en televisieregisseur. Weisz begon met een studie aan de toneelschool, maar gaf dat na een jaar op om naar de Amsterdamse Filmacademie te gaan. Hij kreeg een studiebeurs voor de Italiaanse filmschool Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. Zijn eerste speelfilm maakte hij in 1966, Het gangstermeisje, naar de gelijknamige roman van Remco Campert. Voorts maakte Weisz onder meer de films De Inbreker (1972), Rooie Sien (1975), Charlotte (1981), de trilogie Leedvermaak (1989), Hoogste Tijd (1995), Qui Vive (2002), Happy End (2009) en de televisieserie Bij nader inzien (1991). Hij heeft gewerkt met gerenommeerde acteurs als Kitty Courbois, Will van Kralingen en Coen Flink, de Louis d’Or-winnaars Ko van Dijk, Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Pierre Bokma en Edwin de Vries, Theo d’Or-winnaars Sigrid Koetse en Annet Nieuwenhuyzen en Gouden Kalf-winnaars Rijk de Gooyer, Willeke van Ammelrooy, Gerard Thoolen en Willem Nijholt. Zelf kreeg Weisz Gouden Kalveren voor Leedvermaak (1989) en Bij nader inzien (1991). Jeroen Willems (1962) is een Nederlands acteur en zanger. Willems doorliep de Toneelacademie Maastricht en begon zijn carrière bij Theatergroep Hollandia, waar hij onder meer te zien was in La Musica (1991), het bekroonde Twee Stemmen (1997 en 2004) en La Musica Twee (2003). Willems werkt ook regelmatig bij andere gezelschappen, waaronder Het Zuidelijk 29
Toneel/Hollandia, het Nationale Toneel, Oostpool en het Vlaamse gezelschap De Tijd. Hij speelde in vele film- en televisieproducties, waaronder Tijd van leven (1996), Wij Alexander (1998), als Wim Sonneveld in de VPRO-dramaserie Bij ons in de Jordaan (2000), De Passievrucht (2003), in de rol van Jacques Brel in Brel (2004), Ocean’s Twelve (2004) en Simon (2004), Stellenbosch (2007), Zomerhitte (2008), Komt een vrouw bij de dokter (2009), Bellicher (2010) en De Troon (2010). Willems speelde de hoofdrol in een uitvoering van Louis Andriessens opera La Commedia (wereldpremière Holland Festival 2008). Ook is Jeroen Willems regelmatig in Duitstalige theaterproducties te zien. Bij de Münchner Kammerspiele speelde hij in Drei Farben: Rot naar de film van Krzysztof Kieslowski (Johan Simons). Dichter Carola Luther (1959) werd geboren in Zuid-Afrika, maar woont sinds 1981 in Engeland. Ze behaalde haar master in creatief schrijven en promoveerde vervolgens op het gebied van theaterwetenschappen. Luther heeft twee dichtbundels op haar naam staan: Walking the Animals (2004), die genomineerd werd voor de Forward Prize for First Collection, en Arguing with Malarchy (2011). Haar gedichten worden gepubliceerd in talloze kranten, tijdschriften en anthologieën; daarnaast is ze werkzaam geweest als theaterregisseur en als poëziedocent aan de Manchester Metropolitan University. Biographies Originally from America, soprano Claron McFadden has been based in the Netherlands for many years. She graduated in 1984 from the Eastman School of Music in New York. In 1985 she made her opera debut at the Holland Festival in Hasse’s l’Eroe Cinese. Since then, McFadden has built up a huge reputation as an opera and concert singer on the international stage, performing in many world premieres in the baroque as well as modern repertoire. McFadden has worked with orchestras and ensembles such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, The Hague Philharmonic, The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra, The King’s Consort, the Münchener Kammerorchester, Ensemble intercontemporain and Ensemble Modern. She has performed with conductors such as Kurt Masur, Sir Andrew Davis, Hartmut Haenchen, Frans Brüggen, Marc Minkowsky, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Neëme Jarvi and Fabio Biondi, in concert halls such as The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Mozarteum, Großer Saal and Royal Albert Hall in London, the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, and the big venues in New York City and Tanglewood in the United States, in Poland, Germany and Japan. McFadden has played in productions by internationally renowned opera houses, including the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, De Nederlandse Opera, Teatro alla Scala and the Théâtre des ChampsElysées. Her broad interest is reflected in the productions she has sung in, ranging from Mozart to Vivier and from Purcell to Tippett. McFadden has made many recordings, including Acis and Galatea by 30
Händel, Orfeo by Haydn, Les Indes Galantes by Rameau, Ascanio in Alba by Mozart and Life Story by Thomas Adès. In 2006 McFadden was awarded the Amsterdam Arts Prize. Dimitar Bodurov (1979) is a Bulgarian jazz pianist, composer and producer currently living in the Netherlands. Although he has a solid background in both jazz improvisation and classical composition, Bodurov is mostly associated with incorporating Bulgarian folklore in his music. As a pianist he has released several CD’s. Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant selected his Bodurov Trio’s Stamps from Bulgaria 2008 for their Top 10 Albums from the Netherlands for 2008. His project for duet Neofobic was released by the renowned Norwegian pianist/producer Bugge Wesseltoft in 2010. Bodurov has been giving concerts throughout the Netherlands, as well as in Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Ireland, Macedonia and Bulgaria. He has worked with outstanding jazz musicians such as Randy Brecker, Rick Margitza and Didier Lockwood. Bodurov has received several awards. Most recently, he was voted winner of the Young Pianist Foundation Jazz Competition 2007, and he received a mention at the Martial Solal Jazz Piano International Competition 2010. As a composer, Bodurov has written mostly chamber works for various ensembles. He has received commissions from the Gergiev Festival Rotterdam, Sofia Music Weeks International Festival, Musique Classique Amiens. In 2011 Bodurov wrote the music for GAP – a music and dance production of the Leine Roebana Dance Group from Amsterdam. 31
Frans Weisz (1938) is a Dutch film and television director. Weisz studied acting for a year before switching to the Film Academy in Amsterdam. He was awarded a scholarship for the Italian film school Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome. He made his first feature in 1966, Het gangstermeisje, after the novel of the same title by Dutch writer Remco Campert. Weisz went on to make films such as De Inbreker (1972), Rooie Sien (1975), Charlotte (1981), his trilogy Leedvermaak (1989), Hoogste Tijd (1995), Qui Vive (2002) and Happy End (2009) and the television series Bij nader inzien (1991). Weisz has worked with renowned actors such as Kitty Courbois, Will van Kralingen and Coen Flink, winners of the Dutch theatre prize Louis d’Or Ko van Dijk, Gijs Scholten van Aschat, Pierre Bokma and Edwin de Vries, recipients of the Dutch theatre prize Theo d’Or Sigrid Koetse and Annet Nieuwenhuyzen and recipients of the Dutch film prize the Golden Calf Rijk de Gooyer, Willeke van Ammelrooy, Gerard Thoolen and Willem Nijholt. Jeroen Willems (1962) is a Dutch actor and singer. Willems studied at the Academy for Dramatic Arts in Maastricht and started his career as a member of Theatergroep Hollandia, playing in La Musica (1991), the award-winning Twee Stemmen (1997 and 2004) and La Musica Twee (2003). Willems regularly performs with other companies, including Het Zuidelijk Toneel/Hollandia, the Nationale Toneel, Oostpool and the Flemish company De Tijd. He played in many films and television dramas, including Tijd van leven (1996), Wij Alexander (1998), Dutch broadcaster VPRO’s drama series Bij ons in de Jordaan (2000, as legendary Dutch performer Wim Sonneveld), De
Passievrucht (2003), Brel (2004, in the title role), Ocean’s Twelve (2004) and Simon (2004), Stellenbosch (2007), Zomerhitte (2008), Komt een vrouw bij de dokter (2009), Bellicher (2010) and De Troon (2010). Willems played the lead role in a production of Louis Andriessen’s opera La Commedia (world premiere Holland Festival 2008). As well as in his native country, the Netherlands, Willems also appears quite regulary on the German stage. With the Münchner Kammerspiele he starred in Drei Farben: Rot, based on Krzysztof Kieslowski’s film, directed by Johan Simons; and he has played the lead in Ludwig II, directed by Ivo van Hove and based on Luchino Visconti’s film of the same title. From 2005 he played in three of Christoph Marthaler’s projects, Schutz vor der Zukunft, Papperlapapp and Lo Stimulatore Cardiacco (Wiener Festwochen, Festival d’Avignon, Opera Basel). He also appeared opposite Barbara Sukowa in Heiner Müller’s Quartett, which was directed by Barbara Frey for the Salzburger Festspiele in 2007 and invited to the Holland Festival in 2008.
