Upřímně doufáme, ţe v HK Chronicle si kaţdý najde to svoje. Přejeme hodně příjemně a uţitečně strávených chvil. A do dalšího roku jen to nejlepší. Vaše redakce

Prof. MUDr. RNDr. My umíme v přijímacím řízení vybrat pouze ty studenty, kteří měli schopnost a vůli se to všechno potřebné naučit.

Anne: Prof Červinka, while I was preparing for this interview, I have looked at your CV and found out that you have managed 2 degrees at the same time. You had a PhD in physiology of animals in 1980 but your entered medical school in 1978. How did you manage your time between those 2 fields? Prof Cervinka: I…er…I managed. It was not a very easy period of my life. At high school there was a club of young people really into biology so we spent every weekend here at faculty in the labs. It was my first contact with LFHK. The majority of members of this club was focused on medicine, but in that time I was doing my first experiments with animals which I liked more than the clinical part. Therefore I had a big problem to decide in which faculty I should go to – faculty of science or faculty of medicine. Eventually, I started in Prague at the Faculty of Sciences, physiology department. We learned both – animal and human physiology, hence I had quite good knowledge of human body too. After graduation I worked for three years in Prague on my CSc. (equivalent to PhD.) and in
that time I recalled all my knowledge of human body and attended LFHK. After finishing I started to work here at the biology department. A:How was medical school back then? I mean did you have weekly microtests?.... P.C:I must say that the main principe is more or less very similar. Actually there was nothing like hand-outs, Google, Wikipedia etc. but the whole philosophy of the course was quite similar. Even the ratio of number of students to number of teachers was almost equal. Sure, there are new topics, new type of education (videos, moodle etc.) but the main goal above the studies is the same. What is absolutely amazing is that you have all the lectures on the net. If somebody is so enthusiastic he can prepare for the lectures and be ready to get all the information. And in that time it was difficult to change something in scripta. You had to go through long bureaucratic ways to actualize that. Today you can just change something in the presentation. So all the work with the information is quite faster. A:You became head of the department of medical biology and genetics at this faculty in 1991 and dean in 2010. How do you juggle your time between those 2 positions? P.C:Well, there were no dramatic changes in 2010 because I was vice-dean for research and post-graduate program for almost 20 years. I have simply switched to another area. For me it was not big issue. You know, me and my wife work here, our kids are grownups and we live only 10 minutes away from the faculty, so we spend almost 14-15 hours every day here. This is how I manage to fulfill all my obligations. There are only very few deans who still teach in their position and I am one of them (smile). A:Is it possible for international and Czech students to do their practical together? P.C:I personally don‟t have anything against it, but there is big legislative issue. According to the law, foreign students have to have their own program taught in English and that‟s what they pay for. If they studied with Czechs, they would have to attend Czech program which is free, but taught in Czech. We can for example make some voluntary subject and it can be anything (lectures, labs, whatever). It would definitively help to establish some links between all students. We have to stimulate contact between foreigners and Czechs.

A:Do you know the percentage of doctors graduating from this faculty and getting a job abroad?
A:Prof Cervinkova is a very strong woman, how did you get her to marry you?
P.C:We don‟t have exact statistics, but I know plenty of really successful students working abroad. For example, we have two Indian students who graduated two years ago applying for their green card to work at Mayo Clinic, which is a really prestigious clinic. Another student – from Germany, graduated two or three years ago – and works now as a head of department in a hospital in Austria. And we have many stories like these.
P.C:It was not so complicated (laughs). I am not pretty sure if I had to convince her. We know each other since high school. We attended the same high school and even the biology club too.It got more serious when we were on a trip, in UK for three weeks in ‟67. After that, it was a relatively long way with all the natural steps to our relationship. We have been married for 39 years now, almost 2/3 of my life! To Our Dear Secretaries !
Zuzana Petra
-
Have you ever wondered how is it like to be at the service of more than 200 students, coming from all over the world? Well, it‟s must be a very stressful task indeed. However, when you meet our secretaries, you are not going to think that way. I would like to introduce you to Zuzana Ticha and Petra Hovorkova. When we are locked outside our flat, are applying for a visa, a bus card or are looking for an accommodation in HK, they are the only names that usually come up to our minds. Here is a „‟very small‟‟ list of what they usually do for us.
Guidance for Visa applications, Communication with the police, Help with the Accommodation, transport, parcels of students, Application forms, organization of the entrance exams, Contact with students before their arrival to HK, enrollment week, Assistance in opening a bank account, health insurance, criminal records….
Things to know Zuzana has been working here for 8 years already and for Petra it has been 2 years. They have 5 weeks of holidays throughout the year: 3 weeks during the summer, few days during Christmas time and couple of days off now and then) Call it multitasking at its best, we all owe them a lot. I personally feel indebted to them. So in the name of all students from the English Program, and from the bottom of my heart, I would like to say a big THANK YOU. Congratulations to you all for getting into Medical school! What an achievement and a welldeserved source of pride!
In Histology, my average was quite good. I failed a few of them (not a big deal, as long as you keep track of your average). Passed the 1st embryo, had to repeat the 2nd embryo test. Failed the winter credit, passed it the 2nd time. Biophysics and biostatistics weren‟t a big issue. Latin was ok and I was doing Czech almost every day, so everything was fine there. So by the end of the summer semester, to summarize everything I had to do (additionally to all the normal credits, of course) - Credit test for all the micro tests in anatomy - GIT and CNS credit -2nd Embryology test in Histology Had to pass all of them in order to get my credits and sit for an exam. Despite all this. I managed to pass 1st year in mid- July. Wanna know how I did it? well, here are some tips:
The good news is: You are only few days (few years to be more exact) from achieving your lifelong dream or your parents‟ dream, depending on the person who made that decision. For some, it might take 6 years exactly, for others just a bit more, and others, less than that. No mat‘’Keep your head up’’ ter how long it takes you, one thing is for certain: you are stuck in here like the rest of us at least for a little while. So I have this 1st advice to welcome you to HK: „‟ keep your head up no matter what!‟‟. Moving on to the bad news: Not all of you will make it to 2nd year! Don‟t get me wrong, you might be the 1st year of all the first years ever to actually have a 100% success rate to 2nd year, anything is possible under the sun right? However, the reality is always stronger that a wishful thinking. 1st year is hard man. As a matter of fact, very hard! Not everyone has the abilities to cope with weekly tests, in a new country, far from family and loved ones, with people that not only are complete strangers to us but are also very annoying sometimes. All this is psychologically draining and yes, I have been there, we all have been there! But if we went through it and survived it, then why can‟t you? First let me share with you my story. When I was in First year, we were 50 students I think, and I was in group 1 which was actually the worst group to be in because on Thursday, we had 2 micro tests: Histology and Anatomy. The other days, of course we had the usual tests, you guys already know them. When I first arrived, I didn‟t know anybody in this place. To make matters worse, I was (and still am) the only student from my country. Not being the party type, I didn‟t go out much, even if I had time…Nevertheless I thought to myself that as I was already here, I better survived! And this is exactly what I did. In anatomy I failed almost all the micro tests (this may be surprising for some, but it‟s completely true). Honestly guys, every morning I came prepared, I knew my stuff inside out trust me, but for some reasons, I was always failing those bloody micro tests! By the end of summer semester, I had to write the credit test for all the micro tests, could you imagine? Of course, there was only a few of us in this mess, as most of my classmates were good and consistent throughout.Besides, I had to repeat CNS and I failed GIT by 3 marks, so I had to do it again too. Spot test and dissection were alright, fortunately.
7
Take care of your mental health: I‟m serious here! Your 6 years in medical school are not going to be worthwhile if you end up completely crazy by the time of your graduation. I don‟t know how many times I actually wanted to give up because of the stress but I found out that, many of my classmates had exactly the same thought. So when I felt that it was simply too much, I would stop everything and I would go jogging, swimming or go for a trip (I would go with my books of course). So if you feel on the verge, stop everything and go for a while. Then come back brand new.
Solidarity is the key: spend time with your classmates, you will actually find out you are not the only one who feels the way you feel and by supporting each other, you can actually make it together. Talk to people around, ask for advices and believe me, people will be willing to help you out and encourage you.
Take every subject seriously: Don‟t believe those who tell you „‟oh you can‟t fail because of Czech‟‟, „‟No one has ever failed because of Biophysics‟‟. This is simply not true! Study as if each subject is the only one you had left to make it! Give your best and stay focused.
Perseverance is the key: 50% of my class didn‟t make it to 2nd year. 3 dropped out, and among them there was one who surprised everyone. The student in question passed all the micro tests and was among the best in my class. That student passed the histology exam but left before the last exam, anatomy.
6
8 So I am asking you: what‟s the point of winning all the battles if you give up on the last and most important one? Those who had failed the year were actually far ahead of me because most were passing their micro tests in anatomy (it means that they didn’t have an additional credit to do). Their average was also good in histology. But you know what? I decided to ignore all this and persevere and eventually it came out ok .
‘‟What‟s the point of winning all the battles, if you give
Believe in yourself: No one is responsible for your successes or failures in life, but you. Right now you are the only one in charge of your life. Therefore you must, have, should, believe in yourself no matter what! I made it, despite all the odds and many before me have made it too, simply because we all believed we could do it. It‟s our turn now to tell you, loud and clear, unanimously: „‟YES YOU CAN „‟!
up on the last and most important one? ‟‟

Významný to úspěch a zaslouţilý zdroj hrdosti.
Biofyzika a biostatistika, to šlo.
Myslím to váţně!
Umíte si to představit?

Neberte ţádný předmět na lehkou váhu! Nevěřte těm, kteří říkají: „Prosím Tě, na latině nemůţeš skapat.“, „Neznám nikoho, kdo by nedal praporkáč,“ atd. To prostě není pravda. Makejte naplno a zůstaňte soustředění!
No a podívejte…
„‟What‟s the point of winning all the battles, if you give up on the last and most important one? ‟‟

Ok, not literally...but ultra equipped laboratories that you usually see on your TV screen will perhaps crop up in our beautiful city.
Would you like to take a nap during lectures in bigger lecture halls with better desks? Do yo want to use tools that have cost tens of thousands CZK, during your research work? Do you have an inner desire to meet up with some handsome mates from the faculty of Pharmacy? I can surely tell you one thing: in few years, all this will be possible.
The University has decided to improve the quality of education and research activities in these 2 faculties in HK and maximalize its applicability. What does that mean for us? New university campus with all the ingredients of a typical college life – sciences, getting a Nobel prize, education, relationships and gossips... And you know what is even more awesome? It will stand right next to the FNHK (hospital) and the Military medicine faculty, which means that we will have everything really close.
Campus in numbers
The whole campus is going to be built in three stages (viz. map) and eventually, the complicated traffic situation at the crossroads next to the hospital and the limited number of entrances to the hospital is going to be solved. The entire campus will be located on a land with an area of 75.000 m2, on both sides of the road. By the end of the construction the total floor area of both faculties will be increased by 6.832 m2. So the average floor area per student, which is recommended for this type of faculties set at 15 m2 is currently at the Medical Faculty 5.09 m2, and at the Faculty of Pharmacy 9.12 m2. How much money will it cost us? Some 398,1 millions, overall.
The management and administration (including meeting rooms for committee meetings, Scientific Council, etc.) Integrated teaching facilities (library, a center for scientific information, IT department, lecture halls, computer center for students, foyer, bar, event. Dining room) An educational object for the pharmaceutical fields (with an auditorium and several seminar rooms): Department of Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacognosy, Social and Clinical Pharmacy An educational facility for medical fields (with an auditorium and several seminar rooms): morphological constitution, practical medicine, social medicine An educational object of propedeutics and joint preparatory courses (including the department of physics, biochemistry, physiology, pathophysiology, pharmacology, medical propedeutics) A Centre for scientific research work and doctoral studies A Centre for Bachelor studies A Sports complex and sports pavilion (including physiotherapy, gymnasium) Accommodation and catering pavilion (for around 1,000 visitors - 800 students, 200 mobility) An University Club
Big step According to the words of the Rector prof. Hampl, the university should become one of the most elite universities in the world because of this high-tech joy. “It‟s a small step for LFHK, but a big leap for the development of the entire college education in HK.” to paraphrase our Dean, prof. Červinka. In conclusion
But don‟t worry, we won‟t have to break our moneyboxes because 85% (338,4 mil. CZK) will be provided by our twelve-star mother and the rest 15% (59,6 mil. CZK) will paid by the taxpayers of Czech republic.
Well, now we just have to hope that embezzlement of money won't slow down this beautiful project. So I keep my fingers crossed and I‟m looking forward to meeting you in that new beautiful place.
When we can enjoy this? Full operation of the first building is planned for the 1.9.2014. By Daniel Burkus. 1st year GM.

Bude to stát hned vedle nemocnice a Fakulty vojenského zdravotnictví, takže to budeme mít všude blízko.
Kč) poskytne naše dvanáctihvězdičková máma a zbylých 15% (59,6 mil.
Objekt integrovaných výukových prostor (knihovna, středisko vědeckých informací, oddělení výpočetní techniky, posluchárny, počítačové centrum pro studenty, foyer, bufet, event. jídelna) Výukový objekt farmaceutických oborů (s posluchárnou a několika seminárními místnostmi): katedry farmaceutické technologie, farmaceutické chemie, farmakognosie, sociální a klinické farmacie Výukový objekt lékařských oborů (s posluchárnou a několika seminárními místnostmi): morfologické ústavy, praktické lékařství, sociální lékařství Výukový objekt propedeutických a společných přípravných oborů (mj. katedry fyziky, biochemie, fyziologie, patologické fyziologie, farmakologie, medicínská propedeutika) Centrum vědeckovýzkumné práce a doktorandských studií Centrum bakalářských studií Sportovní areál a pavilón sportovních aktivit (včetně rehabilitace, tělocvičny) Ubytovací a stravovací pavilón (pro cca 1000 návštěvníků - 800 studenti, 200 mobility) VŠ klub

By Aneta Matulikova, 4th year GM

Did you know that there is a charity here in HK which is part of ISU-LFHK? It is completely opened to students, no need of memmberships to help out children in need!
HKKH is a volunteer based, non-profit charitable organization run by medical and dental international students of LFHK (Charles University In Prague, Faculty of medicine in Hradec Kralove). It is a subdivision of ISU (International Student Union), undertaking its associated charity work. Our aim is to promote voluntary work and charitable fundraising events within the student body in Czech Republic, and for various global catastrophes. As we recognize that we are extremely blessed to have the opportunity to study abroad and probably be successful in the future, it‟s our wish to aid others who are less fortunate, through this charity. Anyone can be a part of HKKH, help a volunteer or donate. No membership is required and every student has the same privileges. It is important to bear in mind that the charity is not only made up of community of students of our faculty is also included. We are always open to anythe founding team as the volunteers that would like to help with our charity work. Our current board consists of a group of volunteers from the first five years of our faculty: Chairperson – Aaditya Sinha, 4th year GM Vice Chairperson – Vidhya Kasilingam, 2nd year GM Secretary – Noel Sardar, 5th year GM Treasurer – Ishleen Kaur, 2nd year GM Administration Head – Gape Ragontse, 4th year GM ICT Head– Amani Randhawa, 1st year dentistry Events Head – Naveeta Aggarwal, 2nd year dentistry Project Coordinator; Children‟s Home in Nechanice – Kgosi Tlhakanelo, 4th year GM Project Coordinator; Dobry Andel – Chieng Jia Jun, 3rd year GM. The charity is currently involved in raising money for a charity in Czech Republic called Dobrý anděl. The name of the organization translated to “Good Angel” in English, is a system through which donors known as “Good Angels” can, through relatively small monthly amounts, assist families in which the father, mother or a child suffers from cancer, situation that usually leads to the financial distress of the family. The money collected is then used to help improve the lives of children that are either suffering from the illness or are under financial strains due to the illness of the main breadwinner of the family.
Dobrý anděl was carefully chosen by the HKKH team after great consideration and study of many other charities. We strongly believe it is a very noble cause and it‟s our hope that you will keep supporting us. Diwali night: The first fundraising event for this project was a HKKH hosted „‟Diwali night‟‟. Diwali is celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs around the world as the festival of light. It is a religious story about the return of King Rama to his city of Ayodhya with his wife Sita and his brother Lakhshman. The people of the city used to light oil lamps to help guide them through darkness back home. Thanks to the participation of students, the event was extremely successful. It included two days of bake sale and one grand night of celebrations on the religious day. A large collection was made, with over 80 tickets sold for food and an overall turnout of just under 100 people. A total sum, of just above 10,500CZK was raised, and the entire amount will be given to charity. There was a unique addition to the bake sales this November. Due to the influence of the Diwali theme, HKKH offered henna tattoos which were done by the HKKH treasurer Ishleen Kaur and a very enthusiastic volunteer Zahra Syed. The henna tattoos were under great demand and the time spent applying them had to be extended. Unexpected appointments were later required and henna application had to be offered on Diwali night as well, which was previously unplanned. The aim of HKKH is now to raise a sum of 10,500 CZK (collected on Diwali night) to 12,000 CZK. Thereafter, a donation of 1000 CZK will be made to 'Dobry Anděl' every month for the next twelve months.

24 Also included in the charity‟s main projects, is a children‟s home known as „‟Dětský domov a školní jídelna‟‟ in Czech language, which is located in Nechanice, a small village of about 2000 inhabitants near Hradec Kralove. The facility has a capacity of 56, but currently houses 45 children, whose ages range from 0 to 18 years. They come from families which can no longer take care of them due to different reasons such as abuse, drug and substance related problems or death. Although the home does not need any financial help at the moment, the children need human contact and relationships. That‟s why volunteers are needed to provide brotherly love, acceptance and friendship. However, HKKH will only be involved with the older kids who have already entered their adolescent ages and are just about to live the home. Most of these teenagers are involved in risky behaviors like Smoking, alcohol consumption, drugs and unprotected sex. They are also at risk of ending up on the streets once they leave the children‟s home because of the hard realities of life they will face. Our role as volunteers will therefore be to empower these children in any way and to help them get ready
to face life on their own, once they leave the children‟s home. We plan to hold seminars and workshops that will be aimed at teaching or reinforcing various life skills such as making the right career choices, budgeting, sex education, proper social behaviors and so on. We also plan to cooperate with the children‟s psychologist to provide some guidance and counseling to the children wherever necessary. Please visit our official Facebook page in which you will be able to find news about our progress and future plans, forthcoming charity events and opportunities for you to volunteer and help in various projects. It is our hope that everyone will gain interest and acknowledge the projects we are part of, and be encouraged to help in any way. Please feel free to enjoy, participate or suggest ideas through the page.

Pivnice Danup roh ulic Rokycanova a Československé armády
Uvítají vás zděné stěny a v centru hospody dlouhý bar.
Předkrm: Klasická česká polévka Kulajda. Pěkně vypadající i chutná.

32

Do you think research is boring? Think again !
Why shall we participate in voluntary scientific activities? My voluntary scientific activities started in 2nd year at the department of Anatomy. Me and my colleagues had the opportunity to perform dissections in any areas of the human body of our interests. It was a good choise from the beginning because the anatomy of the human body is quite a large field of study and one year,in my opinion is not enough. One year later I moved to the department of Histology and embryology. I was interested in histology because I wanted to find out more about stem cells. Fortunately I got a chance to be involved in a research topic about the subependymal zone and the striatum, in a rat model of Huntington disease that was focused on neural stem cells. Thanks to the other subjects I had during the course of my medical studies, my knowledge of that topic broadens considerably. I became interested in pathology later on, so I went to the department of Pathology in which I joined the research team working on the thyroid gland. The results of that research are being prepared for publication. As we got more into the clinical disciplines I also became interested in clinical research. Therefore, I joined a research team at the department of Anestesiology, resuscitation and intensive medicine.
You can share your experiences with other scientists from around the world. Moreover, a research activity gives you a wonderful opportunity to meet top scientists, to get to know their personal opinions and ideas and maybe one day, get involved in publication. Of course it depends on your mentor! I have had only positive experiences so far. In our faculty,if you want to do research, with regular scientists working on different projects, there are plenty of opportunities! It is not always easy. You need to put your time and effort. In other words, you must be dedicated to your project. Just imagine that after school, lectures and seminars you have to go to a laboratory and spend one or two extra hours there, (could be even more if you are keen to do it). „„The more you give away the more you receive and everything you invest in yourself will return back. A good scientist must publish some results. The best way to do so is to attend the students„ scientific conference which takes place once a year, in Spring. You learn how to present your data, how to react during disscusion or how to prepare a poster. Eventually you will be able to publish your data in a scientific magazine. However, it usually requires more experience and more time to know sufficiently more about the matter.
In my opinion the scientific voluntary activity is the Why do I recommend students to do some best way to see what it is like to be a scientist, research? Well, it depends on your abilities, values without any risk of failures. Also it is a great way to and personal characteristics. If you want to know meet new interesting people and learn from them. more and go deeper in a specific field research is One day your employer will see in your CV that you the best way to realize your wish. Research by have some experience in the scientific work and know itself is quite catchy. Once you get involved and for certain that you can offer something more than a understand what happens in a particular topic, master degree. you will be able to get more information through David Astapenko, 6th year GM scientific papers and on-line databases. 33 32

Have you ever heard about this syndrome?
Alice in Wonderland syndrome Alice in Wonderland syndrome (AIWS) or Todds syndrome, named after the British psychiatrist John Todd in 1955, is a psychopathological condition in which the individual may experience a variety of paroxysmal body image disturbances affecting the experience of the size, mass, shape of the body or its position in space. It also occurs with depersonalization, derealization, visual illusions and disorders of the time perception. What does this mean? Well, imagine that you‟re in a room; the door knob appears to be the size of the door itself. The flat floor appears to slope upwards and then drop off entirely. The walls seem to close in one moment, and move outwards to the horizon the next. Chairs and tables seem to float to the ceiling and spin like tops in midair. Visual perception is so altered that you begin to lose your grasp of the reality. Just as the little girl in the Lewis Carroll classic Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865), one doesn‟t know what is real and what isn‟t. Incidence
Some people experience strong hallucinations; they may visualize things that aren‟t there and may also get the wrong impression about certain situations and events.
Also, as the visual perception gets warped, so does he auditory and tactile peception.
What causes Alice in Wonderland Syndrome? We now know that AWS can occur as a symptom of migraine, epilepsy, acute fever (febrile states), schizophrenia, Epstein-Barr viral infection, infectious mononucleosis (glandular fever), or as a result of ingesting hallucinogenic drugs such as LSD and marijuana. Previously, neurological manifestations of AWS were usually ascribed to the damage of the brain's parietal lobe (located at the top and towards the rear of the brain). Whatever the cause, the distortions can recur several times a day and can last from a few minutes to a few weeks. Understandably, the sufferer can become alarmed, frightened, and even panic-stricken. Fortunately, treatment is straight-forward and with excellent prognosis.
It is unknown how many people suffer from AWS. Drs Evans and Rolak report on two cases of AWS: A 31-year-old woman with a 10 year history of mild migraines and a 27-year-old woman who has experienced AWS symptoms about twice a week since the age of 12. They noted with subtle humour in the June 2004 Headache, "rare migraineurs have strange symptoms where the diagnosis may be lurking just down the rabbit hole". With AWS, as Alice might say, things are indeed "curiouser and couriouser".
How to Treat Alice in Wonderland Syndrome? Alice in Wonderland Syndrome has no proven, effective treatment, but treatment programs for the probable causes of the condition are employed to bring about relief.
Signs and Symptoms of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome
The trademark symptom of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is migraine.
The individual loses the sense of time. For him, time seems to pass either at a snail's pace, or too swiftly.
Another most significant symptom of the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome is that the patient perceives the sizes of various other objects inaccurately. Altered body image- is the foremost symptom of the Alice in Wonderland Syndrome, where the individual observes sizes of parts of the body wrongly. More often than not, the head and hands seem disproportionate; and in general, the person perceives growth of various parts rather than a reduction in their size. (superman in the picture).
In general, the treatment plan consists of giving migraine prophylaxis, (anticonvulsants, anti-depressants, calcium channel blockers and beta blockers). Following a migraine, diet regimen affords immense relief too. Chronic cases of Alice in Wonderland Syndrome are quite untreatable and must wear out, eventually. A person suffering from the disorder may have distortions / hallucinations several times during the day, and the manifestations may take some time to subside. Justly, the individual may get terrified, anxious and panicstricken. These manifestations are not detrimental or dangerous, and in all likelihood will fade over a period of time. Rest is the most optimal treatment. Doctors advocate joining support or discussion groups; they help you comprehend your problem.

I sat down with a foreign student studying in the Czech program, in the 5th year GM, to find out how their program is actually different from ours. The following is what I collected from our discussion.
The Language: He did a Czech language course for one year. During the same year, he prepared for the entrance exam for different faculties.
The Entrance exam: Consisted of 20 questions in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Somatology (anatomy) This faculty alone has over 1000 applicants. Around 150 Places were available.
His choice of the faculty: He mentioned that the entrance exam for this faculty was actually the most difficult. He was therefore convinced that it was because of the higher quality of teaching.
His first year in medical school: ‘’Terrible’’. Mainly due to the language barrier. However Czech students study medical English in 3rd year.
Final exam: They usually have more questions at most final exams, than their colleagues from the English program.
Study in the Czech Program: Advantages: Save you a lot of money Easier communication with the patients. Disadvantages: It requires you to take one year out to study the language. More final exam questions to study for.

Wanna know who is behind the beautiful logo of the HK Chronicle?
It is our pleasure to introduce you to: Daniela Sardar
What you need to know: - She is Czech. - She works as an Arts and English teacher in secondary school (ages 10-15) - She usually starts at 8 am and ends at 2pm on a typical day. - Her interest in design started with drawing, when she was still a kid - She went to Arts School, then she studied Arts at the University (including drawing, Painting, sculpture, etc…) and later she studied digital arts and computer design. - She prefers computer design (because it‟s more practical) - She takes it as a hobby and does most of the designs at home. How did she start? She started designing invitation cards for her friend‟s wedding. She also did some illustrations for a monthly magazine over a period of one year… What kind of skills do you need to be good at computer design? Time, patience, good eyes…and of course practice.
What can she do for us? Posters, design for webpages (but she can’t program the webpage!), logos, Photoshop, greeting cards, business cards, invitation cards, etc… Prices are negotiable (definitively cheaper than most graphic agencies). Contacts: email:

Let the rice in open air for some time. 4. To assemble „‟onigiri‟‟, you can either use an onigiri mold, or take a small bowl and lay a sheet of good grade plastic wrap on top. Spoon some sushi rice into the mold, filling about half or 1/4 of the cup into the bowl. Using your fingers, try to flatten it out a bit and then add one tablespoon of your filling.
1. Wash the rice thoroughly until the water is clear. This step removes excess starch so your rice doesn‟t turn into nasty glutinous slop. Then cook the rice with a rice cooker or in a pan. While waiting for the rice to be done, start with the „‟Tunamayo‟‟ filling. 2. Drain the canned tuna well and scramble it along with some mayonnaise in a bowl. The amount of mayonnaise you use is basically completely up to you and to your taste. However, the texture should become flaky and creamy. You can use any mayonnaise you like, but if you have the chance to get a Japanese mayo, use the original! There‟s definitively a difference in the flavour. Add some Wasabi (powdered or out of the tube) if you want. I love it and I think it gives an exciting touch to the meal.
5. Spoon in more rice to cover the filling or to fill the mold. Use the second piece of the mold to press down and finish the form. When using the plastic wrap method, pick up the edges of the plastic wrap and bring them together and twist so that you form a ball of onigiri. Using the plastic wrap to contain the onigiri, push and shape the ball till it resembles a triangle. Remember the filling orientation and try to shape your triangle parallel to the filling layer so your filling doesn‟t pop out. You can sprinkle some sesame seeds on both sides of the onigiri ( white sesame seeds should be stir-fried with a little oil beforehand.) 6. Voila! You can eat them with a „‟nori‟‟ wrapped around, or keep them in a refrigerator for the next day.

As I have stated above, this is not the only way that a crisis is expressed. Simply check the history! Do you Greek crisis?... I don’t think so! think that Hitler, Mussolini or any other leader running a war were just insane? Well, maybe yes just a little bit, but mostly they were imperialists. And the history is repeated with many examples, the most recent being Israel‟s attacks to Palestine, this is still a crisis! But let‟s focus on the famous Greek debt! I will tell you something, this is not my debt. It is not even the debt of my fellow countrymen. Do you think that we are Do you think the financial crisis is only just lazy people that spend our salaries on expensive in Greece? Do you think that the word „‟crisis‟‟ holidays and comforts? No we are not! And the best way to prove it is to check the statistics. We are working is defined only as an economic disaster? Do you think that the Greek people are the ones more than any other European citizens that probably own less money. The so called „‟Greek debt‟‟ is the debt of the responsible for that huge debt? Do you think that my country will be ever able to pay back Greek government, created by corruption and by investment of huge amounts of money that supply the the money lent by the “kind” International Monetary Fund, with unbearable interests that richest business classes in Greece. are not imposed to any other country? But the last two years we have had more than 2000 suicides and same type of food in huge amounts can kill it, a dramatic increase of criminality…crisis! and this is exactly the case. And because the available space is a bit limited I will tell you just one more thing. Do you think that my wish as a Market is oversaturated by capital which means that capital must be destroyed, as the Greek and as a human being is just that my country survives the crisis? NO, it‟s not. Simply because in this monster is bulimic and as long as the food is f*** system there is no way to escape, crisis will come available, it will just keep on eating. I want to go on and leave this world behind me. I want to build a new world that will have enough air for all of us. I don‟t expect any god, or goddess to save me. What do our phones have to do with the war in the Congo? The democratic Republic of Congo, previously known as Zaire is the second largest country in Africa, situated at the heart of the continent. It is also one of the richest in the world in natural resources: wood, Oil, endangered species such as Chimpanzees, gorillas, crocodiles.
The Situation is undeniably very complex. Topic: Is doing the right thing, always the right thing to do? Ioannis 2nd year GM : ‘’I will only be merciful in case of cheating. But other than that, no other situations! Doing the right thing is doing the right thing!‟‟
Firdaus, 4th year GM: ‘’It depends on you…how do you define the right thing? ‘’ Ilektra 4th year GM: ‘’The right thing is something very subjective and is determined by the social situation everytime. For this system, the right thing is not too still but for another maybe it is right. This is what I believe, it depends on how the society is organized‟‟.
Amardass 4th year GM: „‟I agree mainly with that. In some situations which are very special, I would back the law. For example, as you know, we had the London riots and that was just chaos… I was reading the newspaper and one article which makes me smile was one about a youth, like 21 years old, he came to comet* and stole a big plasma screen TV, like 41 inches. His mum found out. And even though you would expect the mum to cover up for him, she didn‟t. She did the right thing and she sent him to the police and she said he was an idiot! I had an argument with someone else who said „‟oh the mother should have stood by the maternal bond and covered for him…‟‟. But at the end of the day, the mother is doing the right thing! she set an example to her son. This is not acceptable. So I should agree with what Ilektra said.‟‟

Ian Fleming's British fictional character James Bond, a Double-O agent for the British secret services has always been well known as a charming man with memorable elements such as his cars, watches, gadgets, guns and women. 2012 celebrates the 50th anniversary of James Bond films with the release of the 23rd Bond film called 'Skyfall' staring Daniel Craig in his third successful Bond film and Javier Bardem portraying the main antagonist Raoul Silva. The film fell together beautifully expressing the real essence of Bond's struggles through 'Casino Royal', 'Quantum of Solace' and ‘'Skyfall' to produce the personality of strong mind, strong spirit and without a conscience. In Skyfall Daniel Craig portrays a James Bond who is experiencing a combination of lassitude, boredom, depression and difficulty with what he's chosen to do for a living. Bond's perspective of the job is clarified further when he meets and understands Raoul Silvia's history, although this devitalized Bond still continues to serve the British secret services in style and continues to leave the audience wanting more. Through this milestone in James Bond's career, we see him mature and transform further towards the Bond we know as 007, the agent with a licence to kill. Although the great changes we see in the character of Bond, some things never change and one thing all Bond fans are thankful for are Bond's most memorable possessions. Once again in Skyfall returned one of Bond's best and most memorable possessions, an old friend that appeared first in the bond films in 1964 and has been seen repeatedly throughout the last 48 years. The silver Austin Martin DB5 not only returned in the film but for the first time in 48 years since its first appearance in Goldfinger was shown to have its ejector seat button in the gear stick and firing bullets from the front two machine guns. The Austin Martin has been the most memorable car in the series of films and has appeared in ' G o l d fi n g e r ' , 'GoldenEye', 'Tomorrow Never Dies' and 'Skyfall'. 41

was not the original car driven by Bond in the book 'Goldfinger', but an Austin Martin DB mark III, a car designed specifically for racing and is unlikely that Bond would have driven. The DB5 is a British car produced by a private automobile manufacturing company 'Austin Martin', between 1963 and 1965, one of the David Brown series of Austin Martins of which 1,023 were made. After the appearance of Austin Martin's DB5 in Goldfinger, the car was recognised as the perfect car for Bond and his personality, which lead to him driving Austin Martin's DBS, the vantage and the vanquish. Currently the original DB5 used in the the James Bond series with the gadgets and three-way revolving front number plate showing 'GOLD FINGER', 'JB007' and 'BMT126A' is owned by Harry Yeaggy a car collector who purchased the car in October 2010 for £2.9million. The James Bond series has never disappointed the audience with the selection of cars, those driven by Bond have ranged from small roadsters such as the BMW Z8 or to ultra luxury cars such as Ian Callum's AJ Gen III Jaguar XJ. The villains in the Bond series were too remembered for the cars they drove and the gadgets they had in their cars. One of the best car chase scenes in the Bond films was in 'Die another day'. During the exciting chase across the frozen wastes of Iceland, Bond drives an Austin Martin V12 Vanquish whilst Zao the villain drives a Jaguar XJR, one of the few times when the villain's car is on par with Bond's. Zao takes the lead in his Jaguar, which is fitted with a host of different weaponry. Other cars enhanced the villains' beauty, for example Xenia Onatopp looked stunning in GoldenEye whilst driving her sporty red Ferrari 355, playing a game of cat and mouse with Bond through the mountain roads in the south of France. As we see James Bond mature into the character we have known him to be, from the amateur agent at the start of 'Casino Royal', we notice there is going to be a new future to the films. The Bond films and novels have not only offered the world's deadliest secret service agent, but also provided us with a selection of amazing cars that have been imprinted as special or unique cars, that suit the persona for a person with the licence to kill. The last 50 years have shown us amazing cars, car chases, crashes and stunts, and it will be interesting to see which cars are used in the next film and whether the 48 year old DB5 will return to the screens or not. By Daniel Burkuš
By Daniel Burkuš
By Daniel Burkuš

Suffer In silence Suffer in silence, Do not say a word, Do not make a sound, Do not scream, Do not shout. Cry, cry your heart out, Let your tears fall, Cry from your pain, Your sorrow is reaching out to me, Let me heal you from the inside. Cry my son, cry my daughter, It will get better with time, Just remember to suffer in silence, A seed must die in order to grow, And sometimes in life, we reap what we do not sow. Your aches are not too much to bear, Remember some of us were there, I can see your agony, I am a witness of your sorrow, But please dear, do not say a word. Just listen, listen to the silence, As one day you will know, you will surely know, That silence is a healer, a healer of time. By Anne, 4th year GM
Note: This poem is dedicated to my people from The democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, and Sudan. Especially innocent women and children who were (and some are still) forced into wars, raped, and killed. You only know the real meaning of „‟suffer in silence‟‟!
