Dalam disertasi ini ditelaah konstruksi perurutan waktu pada tataran kalimat, baik kalimat tunggal maupun kalimat majemuk, dalam wacana bahasa Indonesia untuk menemukan kaidah ikonisitas konstruksi yang dimaksud. Konstruksi tersebut ditelaah dari segi ikon diagramatik yang berjenis motivasi pola-urutan, yaitu (i) motivasi pola-urutan referen, (ii) motivasi pola-urutan status informasi, dan (iii) motivasi polaurutan urgensi informasi. Setiap jenis motivasi pola-urutan tersebut mengandung prinsip sebagai berikut. Motivasi pola-urutan referen mengandung prinsip bahwa pola-urutan dua satuan sintaktis atau lebih ditentukan oleh urutan temporal referen yang diacunya. Motivasi pola-urutan status informasi mengandung prinsip bahwa apa yang disebut informasi lama cenderung diungkapkan pada urutan pertama dan apa yang disebut informasi barn diungkapkan pada urutan kemudian pada kalimat. Motivasi pola-urutan urgensi informasi mengandung prinsip bahwa informasi yang dipandang paling penting dalam pikiran pembicara diungkapkan pada konstituen awal kalimat. Penelitian ini dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu tahap pengumpulan data, tahap analisis data, dan tahap penyajian hasil analisis data. Pelaksanaan setiap tahapan tersebut dilakukan dengan menggunakan metode tertentu. Pada tahap pengumpulan data digunakan metode simak dan metode intuitif. Pada tahap analisis data digunakan metode padan dan metode agih. Metode padan yang dimaksud adalah metode padan referensial. Metode agih diterapkan dengan teknik baca markah, teknik lesap, teknik perluas, teknik balik, teknik ubah ujud, teknik pemorakan, dan teknik pengontrasan. Pada tahap penyajian hasil analisis data digunakan metode informal dan metode formal. Model analisis yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah model analisis fungsional. Data dalam penelitian ini dianalisis dari tiga jenis fungsi dalam bahasa, yaitu fungsi sintaktis, fungsi semantis, dan fungsi pragmatis. Pada kalimat tunggal, fungsi sintaktis berkaitan dengan subjek, predikat, objek, pelengkap, dan keterangan; pada kalimat majemuk, fungsi sintaktis berkaitan dengan hubungan koordinatif dan subordinatif antarklausa. Fungsi semantis mencakup fungsi semantis lingual atau peran pada kalimat tunggal dan hubungan makna pada kalimat majemuk, dan fungsi semantis referensial atau referen baik pada kalimat tunggal maupun pada kalimat majemuk. Fungsi pragmatis berkenaan dengan status informasi dan urgensi informasi. Dalam penelitian ini telah ditemukan 56 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu yang terdiri dari 23 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada kalimat tunggal dan 33 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada kalimat majemuk. Setiap jenis konstruksi waktu tersebut memiliki ciri formal dan ciri fungsional, yaitu memiliki struktur fungsi sintaktis, struktur fungsi semantis, dan struktur fungsi pragmatis. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa dalam bahasa Indonesia terdapat konstruksi yang urutan konstituennya mencerminkan struktur realitas yang diungkapkannya. Di samping itu, temuan ini jugs menunjukkan bahwa konstruksi yang dimaksud identitasnya ditentukan aspek internal dan aspek eksternal.

Dari penelitian ini diketahui bahwa konstruksi perurutan waktu mematuhi prinsip motivasi pola-urutan referen. Di samping itu, konstruksi perurutan waktu juga mematuhi salah satu atau semua prinsip motivasi pola-urutan status informasi dan prinsip motivasi pola-urutan urgensi informasi. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa struktur lingual yang mencerminkan realitas objektif, juga mencerminkan realitas subjektif. Dalam penelitian ini telah ditemukan bahwa tidak semua jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada tataran kalimat memiliki imbangan konstruksi yang implausibel. Dan 23 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada kalimat tunggal, terdapat 13 jenis konstruksi yang memiliki imbangan konstruksi yang implausibel. Dan 33 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada kalimat majemuk, terdapat 14 jenis konstruksi yang memiliki imbangan konstruksi yang implausibel. Dengan demikian, dari 56 jenis konstruksi perurutan waktu pada tataran kalimat, hanya terdapat 27 jenis konstruksi yang memiliki imbangan konstruksi yang implausibel. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa struktur lingual cenderung mencerminkan realitas objektif. Antara konstruksi perurutan waktu dengan konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel terdapat perbedaan urutan konstituen, perbedaan ciri formal, dan perbedaan ciri fungsional (fungsi sintaktis, fungsi semantis, dan fungsi pragmatis). Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa struktur realitas dan persepsi pembicara terhadap realitas sangat menentukan struktur lingual. Antara konstruksi perurutan waktu dengan konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel terdapat perbedaan kepatuhan terhadap prinsip-prinsip motivasi polaurutan. Konstruksi perurutan waktu mematuhi prinsip motivasi pola-urutan referen, sedangkan konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel tidak mematuhi prinsip motivasi polaurutan referen. Di samping mematuhi prinsip motivasi pola-urutan referen, konstruksi perurutan waktu juga mematuhi salah satu atau semua prinsip motivasi pola-urutan status informasi dan prinsip motivasi pola-urutan urgensi informasi. Konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel hanya mematuhi salah satu atau semua prinsip motivasi pola-urutan status informasi dan prinsip motivasi pola-urutan urgensi informasi. Perbandingan tersebut menunjukkan adanya ketidaksejajaran antara struktur lingual yang mencerminkan realitas objektif dengan struktur lingual yang mencerminkan realitas subjektif Ketidaksejajaran itu adalah bahwa struktur lingual yang mencerminkan realitas objektif juga mencerminkan realitas subjektif, sedangkan struktur lingual yang mencerminkan realitas subjektif tidak tentu mencerminkan realitas objektif. Dari penelitian ini dijumpai adanya ketidaksejajaran kuantitas kepatuhan terhadap prinsip motivasi pola-urutan antara konstruksi perurutan waktu dengan konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel. Apabila konstruksi perurutan waktu mematuhi tiga jenis motivasi pola-urutan, maka konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel hanya mematuhi satu atau dua jenis prinsip motivasi pola-urutan (tentu saja selain prinsip motivasi pola-urutan referen). Apabila konstruksi perurutan waktu mematuhi dua jenis prinsip motivasi pola-urutan (yaitu prinsip motivasi pola-urutan referen dan salah satu dari dua jenis prinsip motivasi pola-urutan lainnya), maka konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel hanya mematuhi salah satu prinsip motivasi pola-urutan (yaitu salah satu jenis dan prinsip motivasi pola-urutan status

informasi dan prinsip motivasi pola-urutan urgensi informasi). Ketidaksejajaran kuantitas kepatuhan terhadap prinsip motivasi pola-urutan tersebut menyebabkan ketidaksejajaran derajat kelejasan antara konstruksi perurutan waktu dengan konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel. Karena konstruksi perurutan waktu mematuhi lebih banyak prinsip motivasi pola-urutan daripada konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel, maka konstruksi perurutan waktu memiliki derajat kelejasan yang lebih tinggi daripada konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa konstruksi yang urutan konstituennya mencerminkan realitas objektif lebih ikonis daripada konstruksi yang urutan konstituennya mencerminkan realitas subjektif. Perbedaan derajat kelejasan itu mengandung tiga jenis implikasi, yaitu implikasi keuniversalan, implikasi kebermarkahan, dan implikasi pemerolehan bahasa. Implikasi yang dimaksud mengandung prinsip bahwa konstruksi yang lebih ikonis berarti konstruksi yang lebih universal, lebih tak bermarkah, dan lebih mudah dikuasai dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa daripada konstruksi yang kurang ikonis. Karena konstruksi perurutan waktu memilild derajat kelejasan yang lebih tinggi daripada .konstruksi imbangannya yang implausibel, maka konstruksi perurutan waktu berarti lebih universal, lebih tak bermarkah, dan lebih mudah dikuasai dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa. Hal ini menunjukkan bahwa konstruksi yang urutan konstituennya mencerminkan realitas objektif lebih universal, lebih tak bermarkah, dan lebih mudah dikuasai dalam proses pemerolehan bahasa daripada konstruksi yang urutan konstituennya mencerminkan realitas subjektif. Secara umum dapat dikatakan bahwa hasil penelitian ini semakin mengukuhkan pandangan dalam linguistik bahwa ada sektor bahasa yang bersifat ikonis. Hasil penelitian ini sekaligus mempertanyakan kembali pandangan bahwa bahasa itu semata-mata bersifat arbitrer.

ABSTRACT The dissertation contains an analysis of temporal sequence construction in Indonesian sentences, both simple and compound-complex ones, to formulate any iconicity rule for such construction. The inquiry was done by focusing on some aspects of diagrammatic icon with significant sequential patterned motivation; that is (i) sequential patterned motivation of referent, (ii) sequential patterned motivation of informational status, and (iii) sequence patterned motivation of informational urgency. Each kind of sequential patterned motivation complies with the following principle. The sequential patterned motivation or referent agrees to the principle that sequential pattern of two or more syntactic units should be determined by the order of their temporal referent. Sequential patterned motivation of informational status follows the principle in which older information tends to occupy the first sequence, while new information is coming next in sentences. Sequential patterned motivation of informational urgency shall obey the principle that the most important information for the speaker will be put in the initial constituent in sentences. This inquiry is made explicit in three stages: stage of collecting the data, stage of analyzing the data, and stage of presenting the result of analysis. Each stage is carried out by means of certain methods. An observation and intuitive method is applied in the stage of collecting the data. The stage of analyzing the data adopts the identity method and distribution method. It is the referential identity method that is applied in this study. Whereas the distribution method applied in this study shall use several techniques; i.e., read-marker technique, deletion technique, expansion technique, permutation technique, paraphrase technique, counter-data technique, and contrasting technique. In the last stage, that is, the presentations of the analytical result both informal and formal methods will be adopted. A functional analytical model is used in this inquiry. The data is analyzed in term of three functions of the language, that is, the syntactic function, semantic function, and pragmatic function. The syntactic function in simple sentence refers to subject, predicate, object, complement, and adverbial phrase; while in compoundcomplex sentence the syntactic function relates to the coordinate and subordinate relation between clauses. The semantic function involves the lingual semantic function or the role in simple sentence and correlation of meaning in compoundcomplex sentence, as well as the referential semantic function either in simple sentence or in compound-complex sentence. Pragmatic function is in connection with information status and information urgency. Fifty-six types of temporal sequence construction are found in this investigation, 23 types of which occur in the simple sentence and 33 types of which occur in the compound-complex sentence. Every types of temporal construction have its formal and functional characteristics, that is, occupying the structure of syntactic function, semantic function, and pragmatic function. These findings indicate that in the Indonesian language there is a kind of construction whose constituent order reflects the reality structure inherent. Apart from that, the identities of the construction are determined not only by its internal aspect, but by its external aspect as well.

It has been discovered that the temporal sequence construction complies with the principle of sequential patterned motivation of referents. Besides, the temporal sequence construction also agree with one or all of the principles of sequential patterned motivation of informational status and the principles of sequential patterned motivation of informational urgency. This explicitly indicates that the linguistic structure that reflects the objective reality shall reflect the subjective reality as well. Moreover, this investigation has shown that not all types of temporal sequence construction in sentences have equal construction, which is implausible. From 23 types of temporal sequence construction found in simple sentences, 13 types of which have equal constructions, which are implausible. From 33 types of temporal sequence construction in compound-complex sentences, there are 14 types of construction with implausibly equal construction. Therefore, from 56 types of temporal sequence construction in sentences, only 27 types have equal construction, which are implausible. This indicates further that linguistic structure tends to reflect its objective reality. Between temporal sequence construction and its implausibly equal construction, there are some differences in the constituent order, the formal characteristics, and functional characteristics (namely, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic functions). This implies that both reality structure and the speaker's perception strongly determine the linguistic structure. There is an indication that between the temporal sequence constructions and their implausibly equal constructions exist different principles or sequential patterned motivation. The temporal sequence constructions obey the principle of sequential patterned motivation of referent whereas, the implausibly equal constructions do not obey it. Accordingly, the temporal sequence constructions also comply with one or all of the principles of sequential patterned motivation of informational status and sequential patterned motivation of informational urgency. Their equal construction that is implausible only agrees with one or all of the principles or sequential patterned motivation of information status and principles of sequential patterned motivation of information urgency. The proportion indicates inequalities between linguistic structure, which reflects objective reality and that which reflects subjective reality. The inequalities/imparallel lie in the fact that the linguistic structure which reflects an objective reality will also reflect a subjective reality, while linguistic structure which reflects subjective reality does not (always) reflect objective reality. Another findings in this inquiry are the dissimilarity of quantities to obey the principles of sequential patterned motivation between temporal sequence construction and its equal construction, which is implausible. The temporal sequence construction complies with three kinds of sequential patterned motivation, while its implausibly equal construction only complies with one or two kinds of sequential patterned motivation (other than the principle of sequential patterned motivation of referent, of course). When the temporal sequence construction follows two kinds of principle of sequential patterned motivation (i.e., the principle of sequential patterned motivation of referent and one of the two other principles), its implausibly equal construction only agrees with one of the principles of sequential patterned motivation (L e., either
sequential patterned motivation of information status or sequential patterned information of information urgency). This dissimilarity of quantities regarding their obedience to the principles of order motivation consequently creates inequalities of the transparency hierarchy between the temporal sequence constructions and their implausibly equal construction. The transparency hierarchy of temporal sequence constructions is higher than their counterparts that are implausible because the former complies with more principles of order motivation. This indicates that the constructions whose constituents reflect objective realities will be more iconic than the construction whose constituents reflect subjective realities. The different transparency hierarchy bears three kinds of implication: universality, markedness, and language acquisition. This implies a principle in which the more iconic a construction, the more universal it will be, the more unmarked, the more easily acquired in the process of language acquisition, than less iconic construction. Because the temporal sequence construction has higher transparency hierarchy than its implausibly equal construction, therefore, it can be said that the temporal sequence construction is more universal, more unmarked, and easier to learn in the process of language acquisition. This also indicates that any construction whose constituent order reflects objective realities will be more universal, more unmarked, and easier to learn in the process of language acquisition, than the construction whose constituent order reflects subjective realities. In general it can be said that the result of this inquiry corroborates earlier assumption in linguistics that there is an iconic sector in language. The result of this inquiry will lead to question a notion that language is merely arbitrary.
