CROWNING GLORY The Kyocera World Championship Cross Triathlon 2013 in the beautiful surroundings of Kijkduin is the crowning glory of the work of all those people that for years have worked on the development of this sport for extreme endurance athletes. It started in The Hague through the pioneering efforts of Hans Dieben. Over the years the cross triathlon has become a widely acclaimed sport. It is a sport that inspires admiration in the spectators. Watching it increases respect by the minute. And as the world championship will take place in our city we will be able to watch the world’s best ‘live’ in action and perhaps shake hands with them in person. Side events allow recreational sporters to be active in Kijkduin. The program features various forms of the cross triathlon, resulting in a bridge between top sport and amateur sport and this is something I value greatly. They cannot exist without one another. As a result the World Championship Cross Triathlon is not a one-day event but lasts several days. So one does not just enjoy the World

Championship Cross Triathlon but everything that is organized around the event. I have every confidence in the qualities of the organisation which consists entirely of volunteers that work with passion and dedication. They have proved over the years –at the Beach Challenge and last year at the European Championship Cross Triathlon – that it is all in good and reliable hands. KROON OP HET WERK Het Kyocera WK Cross Triathlon 2013 in de prachtige omgeving van Kijkduin is de kroon op het werk van alle mensen die zich jaren hebben beziggehouden met de ontwikkeling van deze sport voor superduursporters. Hier in Den Haag is het begonnen met het pionierswerk van onder anderen Hans Dieben. Inmiddels is cross triathlon een alom erkende sport. Het is een sport waar deelnemers de grootste bewondering afdwingen bij het publiek. Ernaar kijken en het respect groeit met de minuut. En nu de wereldtitelstrijd plaatsvindt in onze stad kunnen wij de absolute wereldtop ‘live’ in actie zien en misschien wel persoonlijk de hand drukken Side events stellen recreatiesporters in staat ook actief te zijn op Kijkduin. Er staan diverse varianten van cross triathlon op het programma, waardoor de door mij zeer gewaardeerde verbinding ontstaat tussen breedte- en topsport. Beide kunnen niet zonder elkaar. Mede daardoor is het WK Cross Triathlon geen één- maar een meerdaags evenement. Dus niet alleen genieten van het WK, maar ook van alles wat eromheen wordt georganiseerd. Ik heb alle vertrouwen in de kwaliteiten van de organisatie, die geheel bestaat uit met veel passie en toewijding werkende vrijwilligers. Zij bewijzen al vele jaren, met de Beach Challenge en vorig jaar met het EK Cross Triathlon, dat alles in goede en vertrouwde handen is. BEACH RESORT KIJKDUIN AND “PERFORMING AT WORLD CLASS LEVEL”! From 10 July to 13 July inclusive the intimate, clean, beautiful, and safe beach resort of Kijkduin will host the Kyocera Beach Challenge and the Kyocera World Championships Cross Triathlon. On previous occasions the National Sports Union selected Kijkduin as a green enclave on the coast to host the National and European Championships of this great endurance sport, but thanks to the support of the city of The Hague, Kyocera Document Solutions, and the business community of Kijkduin we will be able write history this year with the world championship of this “sport pur sang” and we are proud of it. This emphasizes once more that it is possible to have outstanding, relatively small-scale, events that are of interest to the business community of Kijkduin, visitors of our seaside resort, and of course also to the residents of the resort and The Hague and environs. KIJKDUIN BAD EN “ACTEREN OP WERELDNIVEAU”! Het kleinschalige, schone, mooie en veilige baddomein Kijkduin is van 10 juli tot en met 13 juli gastheer van de Kyocera Beach Challenge en de Kyocera World Championships Cross Triathlon. Al eerder koos de nationale sportbond voor Kijkduin als groene enclave aan de kust voor de Nationale en Europese kampioenschappen van deze prachtige duursport, maar dankzij de ondersteuning van o.a. de Gemeente Den Haag, Kyocera Document solutions en het Kijkduinse bedrijfsleven zijn we dit jaar in staat geschiedenis te schrijven met het Wereldkampioenschap van deze “Sport pur Sang” en daar zijn we trots. Opnieuw wordt benadrukt dat prachtige, relatief kleinschalige, evenementen mogelijk zijn welke boeiend zijn voor het Kijkduinse bedrijfsleven, voor de bezoekers van onze badplaats en uiteraard voor de bewoners van de badplaats en Den Haag en omstreken. CROSS TRIATHLON: EVER EVOLVING MULTISPORT As a multidiscipline sport, triathlon has evolved to encompass a number of different forms, each playing an important development role over the course of the sports short history. Cross triathlon first emerged in 1996 on the island of Maui, when mountain biking and triathlon met in a bold new racing format that consisted of an openocean swim, a mountain bike race, and a trail run. This fresh take attracted outdoor enthusiasts, adventure seekers, mountain bikers, and triathletes. The mountain bikers brought their laid back style and bold self assurance, while the triathletes brought their intense training and avid dedication. After this race XTERRA, as the new format was called, quickly developed in a international off-road triathlon brand covering a worldwide tour. In Europe Cross duathlon already existed in the 90’s and in 1998 Europe’s first cross triathlon was held in The Hague, at the same venue where the World Championships are held today. Located at the beach the race was named Beach Challenge. Over the years the Kyocera Beach Challenge was host to several national championships, in 2012 European championships and in the period 2001-2004 the race has also been part of the XTERRA Global Tour. Last year ITU has partnered with XTERRA to further raise the profile of cross triathlon. This cooperation was highlighted by the joined organization of the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships and XTERRA Southeast Championships in May last year. Once in Den Haag, follow the Lozerlaan in the direction of Kijkduin. Follow the P-signs for parking. Please note: finding a free parking space near Kijkduin can be tough in the summer season. It may be possible that you have to park your car at considerable walking distance from the beach. Public transport Buses 23, 24, and 26 stop at Kijkduin.

THE HAGUE AN INTERNATIONAL AND ACCESSIBLE VENUE The Hague is the third largest city in the Netherlands, located on the shores of the North Sea. The beach is extremely popular for water sports and all kinds of sportive activities. The Hague is also the political capital of the Netherlands. Most foreign embassies are located in the city and it is also known as the judicial capital of the United Nations, being the home of its primary judicial institutions, such as the International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice. The Hague is proud to be a sporting city with a strong focus on beach and water sports. This perfect site for the Kyocera ITU World Championships Cross Triathlon 2013, has in the past been used for several international sporting events, including the Swatch FIVB Beach Volleyball World Tour, the ISAF 470 World Sailing Championships, mountainbike races, and since 1998 the Beach Challenge Cross Triathlon.

Beach Resort Kijkduin offers the dedicated area for the Kyocera ITU World Championships Cross Triathlon. It consists of 6 kilometers of beach and 5 kilometers in the Dunes. Along the beach you will find a lively boulevard offering a wide variety of excellent restaurants and beach cafés with a wonderful view of the North Sea. ACCESSIBILITY The Hague is ideally situated for the Kyocera 2013 ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships with easy access by air, public transport, and road. By air: Schiphol Amsterdam Airport, the biggest air hub in Europe, can be reached directly from over 150 European airports and over 100 intercontinental destinations with some 3.500 flights per week. The venue can be reached in 45 minutes by car from Schiphol. Rotterdam The Hague Airport, a growing international airport strategically located near The Hague offering frequent and easy connections with the main European Airports. From here, the venue can be reached in just 25 minutes by car. By public transport: There is an excellent Public Transport System with direct connections by train/tram/bus to the venue. The venue is 15 minutes from The Hague Central Station by the Public Transport System. By road: The venue is directly connected to an extensive road network with highways from the north, east, and south leading directly to The Hague. ACCOMMODATION The Hague is one of the most renowned cities in Europe for International conferences. This is why there is a wide variety of accommodation in The Hague. In total, there are 7,555 rooms available within a 10 km radius. Several campsites can also be found close to The Hague, just 15 minutes by car. For participants of the Kyocera Beach Challenge, The NH Atlantic Hotel, situated on the Kijkduin boulevard, and the dune chalets of the Kijkduin Park, are offering ideal accommodation for athletes and officials.

THE GRAND DAME FROM THE HAGUE The Beach Challenge and I have a bond. But, as in many relations, it has not always been a bed of roses. The Beach Challenge has made me suffer, has frustrated me, and has tortured me both physically and mentally. In my first start I missed a buoy, and got myself almost at the mouth of river Thames instead of Kijkduin beach. Another year a punctured tire forced me to cycle for six miles on only a rim (against the wind, of course) before I could replace the wheel. I have, in two separate races, performed potentially lethal salto mortale’s. Before I even start to swim I know that I will be violently sick during the run, because of the swallowed sea water. Not to mention the two or three minor crashes per episode, and the inexplicable scrapes, cuts, and bruises which I have to treat every time after finishing. I look as if I crawled through barbed wire because I steer as close to branches and bushes as possible, and sometimes too close. I have had to learn that my character is my biggest opponent in cross triathlons. In road triathlons I am able to control my efforts and make tactical considerations. Not so at the Beach Challenge. This is all or nothing. No reservations. The wilder the sea, the stronger the wind, the darker the clouds, the more I am in my element. I have discovered that apocalyptic circumstances set me in selfdestruct mode. In 2007, when I did the Ironman in Hawaii, I had a conversation with an old and wise man from Switzerland. He was a former pilot and had moved to Hawaii for his health. He was already 15 years older than Swiss doctors had expected him to live and had spent this extra time learning the native language and culture of the island. This gave him great psychological insight. He asked me if he could ask a personal question. 'Go ahead', I said. 'Were you a drug addict?', he asked. This question knocked me off my feet. Although I have never been on drugs, he perfectly spotted my personality type.

I am not an expert on the chemical details when I perform a triathlon, but I do know that I feel best after a strong effort. And that it is addictive. Extreme circumstances, combined with a big race, make me uneasy. It raises in me a dark primal instinct. Hard to control. What it is and where it comes from, I don’t know. It is my strength, and my weakness. As if a fierce battle is fought inside me, it frightens and inspires me at the same time. Lanzarote, the Beach Challenge, Hawaii, Almere, Ameland, Allgäu: those are the races that awaken this primal instinct. That is why I am so eager to win the Beach Challenge - it makes me face myself and makes it hard for me. Usually I am not that outspoken, but this time I am not afraid to say I start to win. A couple of scenarios circle in my mind. All with the same outcome. To win. No matter how hard I try, I cannot think of any scenario in which I lose. It crosses my mind that I have felt this convinced before convinced of my own power. The outcome usually was a disastrous race. Because I relied on myself. I have learned not to do just that. Because it is not in my power to decide the race. That, as a club member who read my Allgäu race report pointed out to me, that decision is made by the “Great Engineer”. The very thought of testing the North Sea water makes my heartbeat race. The surf is rough, and the sea beyond is choppy and almost swirling. The swell is two meters high. I cannot find any pattern in the waves. The swim will be tough. A shot of adrenaline hits me. DE HAAGSE DAME De Beach Challenge en ik hebben wat met elkaar. Maar, zoals in elke relatie, is het niet altijd koek en ei geweest tussen ons. De Beach Challenge heeft me doen lijden, gefrusteerd, heeft me fysiek en mentaal op de pijnbank gelegd. In m'n eerste start mis ik een boei, waardoor ik zowat aan de monding van Thames eindig in plaats van op het strand van Kijkduin. In een andere editie moet ik vanwege een stootlek tien kilometer (tegenwind natuurlijk) op de velg rijden voor ik mag wisselen. Ik heb, in twee verschillende wedstrijden, potentieel dodelijke salto mortales gemaakt. Ook weet ik van tevoren dat ik tijdens het lopen steevast kotsmisselijk ben vanwege ingeslikt zeewater. Dan noem ik niet eens de twee tot drie kleine valpartijen per aflevering en de onverklaarbare schaaf- en snijwonden die ik na elke finish moet behandelen. Alsof ik in een rol prikkeldraad ben gesprongen. Komt omdat ik zo dicht mogelijk langs de bomen en struiken stuur, en daarbij regelmatig wat schamp. Ik heb moeten leren dat mijn karakter mijn grootste tegenstander is in offroad triathlons. In wegtriathlons kan ik prima doseren en taktische afwegingen maken. Niet bij de Beach Challenge. Daar ga er altijd vol in. Zonder voorbehoud. Hoe woester de zee, hoe harder de wind, hoe donkerder de wolken, hoe meer ik me in m'n element voel. Ik heb ontdekt dat ik in apocalyptische omstandigheden overga op zelfdestructiemodus. In 2007, toen ik Ironman Hawaii deed, sprak ik een oude, wijze Zwitser. Hij was piloot geweest en verhuisd naar Hawaii vanwege gezondheidsredenen. Hij leefde al 15 jaar langer dan de Zwitserse doktoren hem hadden gegeven. Hij had zijn extra tijd besteed aan het leren van de inheemse taal en de cultuur van het eiland. Daarmee had hij ook een groot psychologisch inzicht verworven. Hij vroeg of hij me een persoonlijke vraag mocht stellen. 'Go ahead', zei ik. 'Were you a drug addict?', vroeg hij me. Die vraag sloeg in als een bom. Ik heb weliswaar nooit drugs gebruikt, maar hij herkende in mij wel het persoonlijkheidstype. Expert ben ik niet in de chemische gevolgen die triathlons hebben, maar ik weet wel dat ik me het prettigst voel na een zware inspanning. En dat dat verslavend werkt.

Zware omstandigheden, in combinatie met een grote wedstrijd, maken me onrustig. Een donker, gloeiend oerinstinct komt dan naar boven. Nauwelijks te controleren. Wat het is, en waar het vandaan komt, ik weet het niet. Het is m'n kracht, en m'n zwakte. Alsof er binnenin me een heftige strijd wordt gestreden. Het creëert angst, maar het inspireert tegelijkertijd. Lanzarote, de Beach Challenge, Hawaii, Almere, Ameland, Allgäu: dat zijn de wedstrijden waar dat oerinstinct opleeft. Daarom ook wil ik zo graag de Beach Challenge winnen. Juist omdat ze me met mezelf confronteert en het me zo moeilijk maakt. Meestal ben ik niet zo uitgesproken, maar deze keer durf ik hardop te zeggen dat ik start voor de winst. Ik heb een stuk of acht scenario's in m'n hoofd. Met allemaal dezelfde uitkomst. Winst. Hoe ik ook m'n best doe, ik kan niet op een scenario komen waarbij ik niet win. Het schiet daar m'n hoofd dat ik me wel eens vaker zeker heb gevoeld. Rotsvast overtuigd van m'n kunnen. De uitkomst was dan meestal een desastreuze wedstrijd. Omdat ik op mezelf vertrouwde. Ik heb geleerd dat ik dat dus niet moet doen. Want mijn kunnen bepaalt de uitslag niet. Dat doet de Grote Machinist, zoals een clubgenoot me dat, na het lezen van het wedstrijdverslag van Allgäu, zo mooi mailde. Het inzwemmen doet m'n hart sneller kloppen. De branding is ruw, en als je daar eenmaal doorheen bent, krijg je te maken met een woelige, soms kolkende zee. Er staan golven van twee meter hoog. Een ritme kan ik er niet in ontdekken. Het zwemmen wordt zwaar. Een golf adrenaline stroomt door me heen. De Haagse dame heeft me al in haar ban, nog voor het startschot is gelost. For the Elite and U23 athletes the start is also in TA1, but the finish of the bike course is in Transition Area (TA2) at the finish area.
