UEFA President’s Message
On behalf of UEFA, allow me to wish all of you attending this fourth edition of the UEFA European Women’s Under-19 Championship in Hungary a very warm and hospitable welcome. It is particularly pleasing to welcome Scotland and Hungary to the final round of this competition for the first time. Hungary qualified as hosts, whereas Scotland went through a very successful qualifying campaign, winning all their matches – and in the process scoring 33 goals and conceding only one. I would like to thank my colleagues from the Hungarian FA for their hard work in organising this tournament and hope that the event will leave a precious legacy for the further development of girls’ and women’s football in the regions hosting the matches of this final round, and in the country as a whole. Only a month ago women’s football in Europe concluded it’s most prestigious competition: the sixth edition of the UEFA European Women’s Championship and the first edition to take place since women’s football was assigned professional status within UEFA’s administration. The Championship was staged with great success in the North-West of England, with a total audience figure for the 15 matches of over 115,000 fans, and saw Germany being crowned European champions for the fourth consecutive time. In fact Germany have a winner’s record at under-19 level as well. They are in possession of the trophy after winning the championship for the third consecutive time in 2002. The last two editions saw France and Spain being crowned champions, bringing to an end Germany’s reign. For this edition in Hungary I wish all the participating teams the best of luck and hope the Hungarian public will enjoy attending the tournament as much as the players, officials and supporters do.

Tegyük hozzá, U19-es szinten is Németország a legsikeresebb. Ők a trófea címvédői, miután 2002-ben harmadszorra tudták megnyerni a női U19-es Eb-t.

Hungarian FA President’s Message
We’d like to be the best possible hosts for women’s football's great event The work we have done in the last few years proves that we have an unbroken faith and intention to lead Hungary back to parts of the European football map from where famous teams are drawn. When I say this, I’m not only referring to the fact that former World Cup winner Lothar Matthäus now leads the men’s national team but that we have been bidding candidates to host the last two UEFA European Championships, coming close for EURO 2008™ and now with high hopes for our joint bid with Croatia for the 2012 final tournament. We were therefore quietly confident that we had the requisite experience and technical skills when we decided to try and bring the European Women’s Under-19 Championship to Hungary. We see that all over the world more and more women are starting to watch and play football. The game that was once erroneously considered to be solely a man’s sport is now becoming increasingly a unisex game in Europe as well as further afield. We – football’s administrators – quickly realised that, just as the older brother helps the younger, it is right we use the experience of men’s football to improve and support the women’s game. This is why we were absolutely delighted that UEFA agreed to host its next European Women’s Under-19 Championship in our country, a place where we want to do as much as possible for the development of football across every area. It is a great honour for us that we now have the chance to host the best European women players in this age bracket and we hope they will have the perfect venues to showcase their talents, here in Andráshida, Bük, Pápa and Zalaegerszeg. We therefore invite you to sit back and watch these great matches together, while supporting and enjoying the best of European women’s football in Hungary!

A tizenkilenc éven aluli lányok igazi sportemberek, akik a játék kiemelkedő mesterei lehetnek. Drukkoljunk együtt a női futballnak és legjobb európai képviselőinek Magyarországon!

The history of women’s football in Hungary The first ever official Hungarian women’s football team was established in the city of Szeged some 85 years ago. The team for girls and women was called Szegedi Testgyakorlók Köre but they only played a few matches before the club was discontinued. The second attempt to establish women’s football in the country was in 1964 when the girls of the Budapest Physical Education University (TF) played football in addition to other sports. Unfortunately the region’s other universities did not play the game, so a lack of fixtures meant it again failed to take-off. However there was not long to wait before a third attempt was more successful. The first organised recruitment for a football club devoted to the women’s game was in 1970, and as a result the ‘Femina’ club were founded in Budapest. A year later FIFA’s chief executive encouraged national football associations around the world to support women’s game, and in the same year MLSZ started a five-a-side competition which was quickly followed by an official 11-a-side competition that was supported by several large local factories. The first champions in 1971 were Femina FC, the pioneer club that still successfully exists today. The inaugural Magyar Kupa (Hungarian Cup) was organised by MLSZ in 1983 and the first ever international game was played two years later in April 1985, when the national team triumphed 1-0 against West Germany. Nowadays the Hungarian FA is working hard to make women’s football more popular. There were only a few hundred registered players two years ago but thanks to the Bozsik Academy, a nationwide youth education programme, the number of players has rocketed to over 2,500. The national team performs in the UEFA European Women’s Championship’s Elite section and is led by former Hungary international men’s footballer András Telek, a player who has UEFA Champions League experience with Hungary’s most famous club side, Ferencváros. Meanwhile the women’s under-19 side are coached by Edina Markó, a former women’s international player who also coaches Viktória Szombathely, the runners-up in last season’s women’s national premier league.

A magyar női labdarúgás története
Sőt, két évvel később, 1985 áprilisában a női válogatott lejátszotta első hivatalos mérkőzését. A csapat Vrábel Ibolya góljával nagy meglepetésre 1–0-ra legyőzte az NSZK-t. Ami a jelent illeti, az MLSZ évek óta mindent megtesz a női futball népszerısítéséért, ezért is vezeti Telek András személyében korábbi válogatott játékos az együttest (az U19-esek élén korábbi remek női válogatott, Markó Edina áll.) Sőt, mivel a szövetség integrálta a lány futballt az OTP-MOL Bozsik Akadémia programjaiba is, párszázról 2500 főre nőtt az igazolt női labdarúgók száma. Az U19-es női Európa-bajnokság rendezése újabb kiváló apropó a sportág népszerısítésére.

UEFA Women’s Under 19 Championship – Competition History Young women footballers, who perhaps have not yet made the breakthrough to their senior women’s national team, have been given the opportunity to show their skills on the European stage in the UEFA European Women's Under-19 Championship. Start as Under-18 event in 1997/98 The competition, under its former guise as an under-18 event, first took place in 1997/98. The UEFA Executive Committee had already ascertained that the new competition would attract considerable interest from the European national associations, which it duly did, with 26 entries submitted for the inaugural edition. Over the following years interest increased constantly with 33 national associations participating in the fourth and last edition in 2000/01. Under-19 Championship since 2001/2002 For the 2001/02 event the competition was renamed the European Women’s Under-19 Championship and acted as qualification for the inaugural FIFA U-19 Women’s World Championship. 34 national associations entered the competition. Growing interest took the number of participating associations further every year and for the current edition 43 national associations out of 52 participated in the qualifying rounds of the competition.
