“Everyday life is an aspect of history, an interesting one, maybe, but minor. To study it in itself and for itself entails certain dangers.” 1 (Henry Lefebvre, Clearing the Ground, 1961)
Nine years ago, through his solo exhibition Supply and Demand (hereafter referred to as SaD), Ade Darmawan had started his art project concerning “the act of consumption”. Back then, the gallery at French Cultural Center, Jakarta, was transformed in such a way to contain many objects and images connoting a supermarket. One of the installations showed a number of trolleys containing fruits, soaps, mouthwash, etc., which are purportedly to be the potential ingredients of explosive substance. On the red shelves in the ‘supermarket’ were some memorabilia, images and texts. A glass box containing crystalline acid (disinfectant used for mopping the floor) emitting strong smell was seen. Bidang-bidang cermin menutupi sebagian dinding, memantulkan bayangan para pengunjung tengah mengamati barangbarang belanjaan sehari-hari—mie instan, kerupuk, botol-botol kecap, susu kental manis, gula, kopi, dsb.—sebagai ‘karya seni’.
planes covered some parts of the wall, reflecting the image of visitors observing the groceries—instant noodles, cassava crackers, soy sauce bottles, condensed milk, sugar, coffee, etc—as ‘a work of art’. In a newspaper I wrote a review on the exhibition and underlined several issues. 2 One of them is the connection to the topic of supermarket which had occurred in an experimental exhibition by Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesian New Art Movement), Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi (The Fantasy World of Supermarket) at the Jakarta Arts Center, Taman Ismail Marzuki in 1987. 3 SaD is not merely a repetition of the avant-gardists’ strategy of showcasing daily objects as art. The difference lies on Ade’s tendency of treating his artistic creation as ‘an ethnographic project’. One of the works, titled Rp. 238.925 Versus Oji – Rp. 149.140 Versus Ika (2003), was done through a participatory method: Ade handed some money to his two neighbors,
Oji and Ika, to become ‘respondents’, asked them to spend it at a supermarket, then put the groceries they have bought in the exhibition space. Here Ade did not only showcase groceries, but also the ‘participants’, and their entire social act— namely shopping—as part of an artwork. To Ade, shopping does not always mean a mere practical and pragmatic act. Instead, it is a symbolic one. In SaD, supermarket is viewed as most typical and unique location to describe the latest pattern of consumption. Different from the one happening at a store or traditional market, the consumption pattern in a supermarket is shaped by particular situation whereby the consumer acts like an ‘explorer’ who rules the space and commodities. However, what often happens is the reverse: the supermarket becomes a space to burst the desire, which ironically becomes more dominant than the logic of needs. Oji’s and Ika’s participation in SaD become crucial

to show an objective pattern and social relations between commodities and buyers inside a supermarket. In Ade’s work, the two are the real ‘creators’. At that point, Ade is not the ‘artist’, but rather only a provocateur, the trigger, for a discussion about supermarket as a cultural text. Unlike Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi, SaD is not a mere showcase of artistic arrangements that represent supermarket, rather a ‘real‘ social relation. 4 In the end of my article on SaD, I proposed some kind of a challenge to Ade, not to conclude his artistic project only at that exhibition. As a matter of fact, ‘consumption’ is a topic that is relevant throughout our lifetime. As homo economicus, humans will only stop consuming when they are faced with death. According to some Eastern
beliefs, human afterlife even still require consumption activities, as reflected in the ritual of banknotes burning, or burial of daily objects in a funeral.
The Flea Market (after Supermarket) I have to mention SaD because from many aspects, Ade’s ongoing solo exhibition, Human Resource Development (HRD), also addresses the issue of consumption. Supposing that HRD is a sequel of SaD, I would like to stress out that the subject of consumption in Ade’s creation has undergone an interesting process of precipitation—at least over the year, when he started preparing for this exhibition. In HRD Ade no longer employs consumers such as Oji and Ika as the participant or object he examines and showcases in the exhibition space. In HRD, the point of consumption undergoes such a personal reflection, that the border of artist’s position and the reality he observes turns to become vague.

Flea market is the locus in Ade’s current project. His interest was initially personal. Ade has been a passionate collector of secondhand goods for years. Despite all his personal considerations when he first bought them, HRD is not an exhibition which only intends to show the meaning of the possessions personally for the artist. What was more important to him is to first question the act of consumption at the flea market as a point of departure. The links among goods, interaction and the actors’ performance in the market are always interesting to be defined symbolically. According to Ade’s idea, the flea market can be seen as a stage, a location where all forms of sign of commodities are sealed by atmospheric and theatrical aura. The buy-and-sell activities that take place there is different from that in other markets, such as traditional market or fish market. Flea market is by convention a ‘secondary market’, namely a location where the traded goods have undergone ‘consumption process’, prior to being redistributed as commodities. If we allegorize commodities as having a life cycle that begins with its ‘birth’ (when they are manufactured in factory), and

‘life’ when distributed (by merchants) and consumed (by buyers), the flea market is the ‘afterlife’, which in fact shows how commodities can hardly ‘die’. The interaction of actors in a flea market can always be seen as exchange and transformation of symbolic capitals. 5 In a flea market ‘scarcity’ can consecrate the goods’ status and value as well as the capital of the actors involved. The (cultural and intellectual) understanding for codifying used goods as rare commodities—so that a deal on the value and the price can be reached—becomes a significant capital for traders and suppliers. In a flea market, a trader’s and supplier’s reputation often matters to the buyers to obtain the validation of the goods value. Newness sometimes does not matter compared to scarcity—the scarcer the goods, the more expensive is the price. The consumers in the flea market can be grouped into several types. The first comprises those who want to optimize

menunjukkan bagaimana benda-benda komoditas tak pernah benar-benar ‘mati’.
the functional or practical value of the secondhand goods, using as minimum capital as possible. The second group is those who want to obtain the sign value of the used goods in order to reach a certain place or status in the social stratum. Any goods connoting the sense of elitism or ‘high taste’ are the main target of these consumers—it is not important whether the goods are imitation or fake, what is important is the resemblance to the original, or the rare ones. The third group comprises specialized antique hunters, who, through their purchasing activity, try to transform their economic capital into symbolic capital (reputation or acknowledgment of their presence as ‘collectors’, part of the elite circle). It is worth noting that the validation of the symbolic meaning of some goods (for example a used radio) must be carried out through the externalization of ‘cultural capital’, namely the ways of breaking
Periodisasi dokumen-
down the codes and history embedded in the goods. Most works shown in HRD are composed of the artist’s own collections of outworn wares that are converted into artistic materials. It is quite difficult, however, to set the categorization or taxonomy in sorting out the objects that Ade has gathered. In the ‘document’ category, for instance, we can find motivational text books, religious and scientific books, children’s, teenage and general magazines altogether, in many appearances that are totally varied. The documents’ ‘periodization’ is also vast, starting from ‘indoctrination’ books, historical documents, governmental office bulletins in the 1950s, lifestyle books of the 1970s, to practical way of multilevel marketing that boomed in Indonesia following the 1997 economic crisis. Let alone the information contained in those documents. The range of contents is just too complex and contradictory to be incorporated into one group. In the memorabilia or merchandise c a t e g o r y, a s a n o t h e r e x a m p l e , w e see worn out, dingy, obsolete threedimensional objects, from trophies of amateur tournaments to sculptures of many sizes implying industrial, kitsch, and mass nuance. Meanwhile, some tasbih (praying beads), computer keyboard, piano toy, broad fork, speakers, calculator, scale, toys, chandeliers, slide projector, clocks, chairs, etc., can indeed be categorized into ‘functional goods’. However, the category can turn to be inappropriate, as they are all broken or ruined. The only category adequate for all of those is just

‘used goods’: Objects that were originally designed, produced and distributed for mass consumption.
Bricolage and the Transcoding The preparation for the HRD exhibition only took less than a year. Nevertheless, Ade spent a great deal of time of his life for the ‘research’ or the ‘pre-production’ process. As a flea market fan, what he did was not just fulfilling his hobby of wandering, observing and buying a variety of stuffs, but making himself the object and at the same time the subject that he examines for an art project. His direct interaction with ‘the actors’—the traders, suppliers and other buyers at the flea market—has brought him to a more detailed understanding of consuming process. What he did as a consumer is shopping, then observing and reflecting upon it back and forth, to point out the symbolic relations among himself, the consumer commodity and the act of consumption. For the HRD project, Ade considers carefully the selection of the location and type of flea market he visited in Jakarta.
He was not interested in those which are too elite, prominent and expensive (such as the market on Jalan Surabaya), where the sellers apply a strict selection of trade items. He was more attracted to the flea markets called Jembatan Item in Jatinegara and Mall Rongsok in Depok, which he thinks are the markets for the worker and middle classes. In those two markets, the classifications of items vary more, even tend to be odd and chaotic. There line between ‘commodity’ and ‘rubbish’ is in fact very unstable. The flea market opens up the opportunity for Ade to talk about production, distribution and consumption of goods from a more historical (or ‘post-historical’) as well as nostalgic perspective. The flea market is indeed a sea of signs— yet, not the ‘neutral’ or ‘sterile’ ones, because as far as the traded merchandise is concerned, there is a passage that is

manifested more clearly, for example in the worn-out, flawed, broken, incomplete form or condition of the objects. Differed from consuming ‘new’ stuffs, Ade considers the act of shopping at the flea market as an effort to gather the time dimension, history, dreams, passions and other relations that have once existed among the commodities and the consumers, both at primary and secondary levels. One of Ade’s installations, Permutation, comprises fifteen chandeliers hung to the ceiling and twenty vitrines supported by wooden structures. In each vitrine myriad of objects are showcased individually, or together with other objects. A sense of oddity evokes from the way Ade combines two or more object entities in one box, and it can be sensed even more when we observe the entire installation. T h e juxtapo s i ti o n o f th e o bj e c ts i n Permutation is done based on the principle of substitution and construction, which results in contradiction, subversion,
deconstruction and paradox. Interestingly, any of signs’ antagonism can be present ‘comfortably’ toward each other. We may sense an awkwardness in the juxtaposition of oppositional signs (for instance, in the box containing some small figurines resembling Confucius, Jesus, a rabbi and a man with Arabic-style clothing). Yet such a feeling can soon be vanished as we observe the whole installation—since too much oddity can turn to ‘familiarity’. Ade’s other strategy is by showing disharmony in the composition of fixed and homogenous signs (e.g. the iron chains merged with a group of praying beads, or a broad fork bearing a loudspeaker). I would like to emphasize bricolage and transcoding as the dominant strategies in Ade’s current exhibition. Not only apparent in the installations, which are built by arranging, organizing, tying and repacking myriads of used goods, such strategies are also quite clear in the twodimensional work series which make use of screen and digital print technique.

Composed of fragments of imageries that Ade searched and downloaded from the Internet, Self-Test series is done by enlarging some IQ test diagram onto the canvas. So is the case with the series Men, Illiterate, Work, Education, Non Formality which consists of statistic diagrams in social sciences researches that he decoded into mere ‘abstract’ images. Meanwhile, in Old Colony and the Working Bee, Ecosystem Quotient, Organization and Volvox Globator series, Ade’s awareness of formulating new meaning is quite clear in the way he merges different scientific icons as a metaphor for modern human organization and colony. The installation Bagaimana Menjadi Kaja (How to Become Rich) is composed of murals at the gallery walls and hundred of book (or documents) gathered together in four tables with vitrine. Most of the books are in Bahasa Indonesia, authored by Indonesian writers, and thus boldly shows the readers aimed. Ade grouped the books into three classifications: religion, the state and capitalism, as the three major powers that construct the discourses of contemporary Indonesian society. However, from the book pages that are intentionally left open, we will soon discover that the three are never really apar: The political texts also make use of religious terms. So do the principles taught by religion, which in fact have basically been founded on market economy. On the gallery walls, Ade drew a mural made of the enlarged and combined diagrams and tables from the books, which thoroughly form some absurd and abstract instructions.
I n s tal as i B a g ai m an a Men dj adi Kaj a tersusun dari mural di dinding galeri dan instalasi buku-buku (atau dokumen) yang dikumpulkan di dalam empat buah meja dengan kotak pajang bening. Demikian halnya,
The work Carousel places a piano as the central element of the installation. On the back side of the piano, Ade arranged scraps of wooden boards as a screen for photos projected from an old analogue slide projector. It is obvious enough to see that the negative slides were obtained from one secondhand goods supplier. The photos show a middle-aged man as the main figure. His poses intentionally expose the background or the situation indicating wealth and pleasure. A disharmony emerges out of the combination of narcissistic images and the false tunes of a song note converted from a social statistic diagram. Most of Ade’s works hold a sort of belief that the signs at the flea market refers to a particular reality, and the reality can be reproduced in signs. Tournament is an installation comprising old trophies and discarded frames displayed on the wall. This work certainly does not intend to bring back a history of winners and the existing tournaments. Trophies are fetish objects that are often displayed as part of a home interior, as a symbol of social status or rewards. The existence of trophies in a house is considered to bring impressions of superiority, as well as the owners’ recognition on the importance of victory in a struggle, competition or rivalry. But stockpile of worn-out trophies at a flea market implies a scenery of graveyard, where optimism can turn outdated and artificial. As a bricoleur, Ade plays with particular patterns of signs construction. Sometimes some element in his works convey the messages explicitly, critically and

Karya-karya instalasi Ade menunjukkan semacam kepercayaan bahwa tandatanda di pasar loak menunjukkan realitas tertentu, dan realitas itu dapat direproduksi k e d a l a m t a n d a - t a n d a .

Ha v in g s ai d th at, th e wo r k s i n H R D offer a unique pleasure of ‘reading’. On the syntagm level, the principle of the signs combination in fact functions as a substitute to elements which are absent in the conventional signs (for example in the use of old wooden flanks as replacement of a screen, or fake hairs replacing the receipt paper that usually comes out of cash register). However, the substitution of the sign elements also operates in such a disorder and chaotic manner on the paradigmatic level, so that the construction and the transcoding at the same time also becomes a deconstruction.
In short, this exhibition has thoroughly connotes an artistic and meaningful orchestration, particularly in the way Ade knits the signs to explore the peculiar, awkward and odd encounters and intersections among the processes of human ‘capitalization’, the concepts of ‘state’ and ‘religion’. Referring to the flea market as the location and metaphor of contemporary world, I myself then understand this project as a delusional and absurd narration on the passion, dreams, illusions, and utopia of contemporary
‘Post-ethnography’ (?), or ‘Artist as Consumer’ No matter how complicated and surreal Ade’s works are, so far they have been never really far from the actual issues of the artist’s surrounding communities. In every span of his works, we find the echoes of individualism, anarchism, sci en ti sm , i n tel l ectu al i sm , rel i g i o si ty, solidarity, etc., which through the time lime encountered and entangled organically and unexpectedly to each other. The world that Ade sees is the manifestation of deviated, mutating and failed grand narration of modernity. Yet, to Ade, it is not less ‘beautiful’ to remain recognized as the representation of reality. If social representation is a rather outdated subject in art history, the discussion of an art project should focus on the ways of approach the social realities. When artists began to question the society and social order, the methodological intersection between their art practice and and the representation in the social sciences is inevitable. Any artistic creation that put the problems of individuals, society and culture in a central position in the formulation of the idea always has the potential to become ethnographic. As an ethnographer, artist becomes a keen observer and recorder of cultural phenomena. Many contemporary artists have immersed themselves with the social realm, entering non-aesthetic discourses

to be able to reveal, for example, social conditions and power system prevailing in a societal level. As an ethnographer, artists often have to directly interact with specific social groups, participate in their activities, discover some hidden facts and then present them in the form of artworks. Some art critics and historians consider the contact between art and ethnography as a clash that corrupts the purity of art and social sciences as a discipline. While some other consider it as inevitable certainty. It is a consequence of art practice that no longer engages with the internal discourses in the art itself: Art becomes the host (as well as a parasite) for the growing new discursive relations with other disciplines, especially in social sciences. The history of artistic practice which lead to an ethnographic tendency can be traced from the avant-garde projects in early 20 t h century. Initially what the avantgardists questioned was the co-optation of art by the bourgeois class disguised as ‘the autonomy’. Radical avant-gardism is therefore an endeavor to ‘re-purify’ art, by remerging it with the daily life. Presenting daily object as art is not an effort to renew the aesthetic aspects—a retinal side of the ways we enjoy art objects—but rather an attack against art as an institution, as well as the superiority of artist as an artistic producer. The urinal, to name a ‘classic’ example of such radicalism, was used by Duchamp as an entry point to critique the institutional power in determining identification and categorization of art. The autonomy principle in modern culture— as reflected on the ‘art’s for art’s sake’
Sebagai etnografer, seniman menjadi pe n g am at d an pen catat f en o m en afenomena budaya.
jargon— basically supposes the freedom of action from economic controls. Yet, at the same time, autonomy is considered to conceal another aspect, namely the commodification. In the contemporary era, artistic practice no longer pretends to contain ethnographic principle, but rather gradually becomes an ethnographic practice itself. This symptom is quite obvious in many artists’ projects which are based on fieldwork, which is done for instance, by visiting places to make observations and interaction with the people and sites. Resembling works by an anthropologist, many contemporary artists create sketches, paint, take pictures, record video, collect things and display them in a gallery as artworks. There has been a strong tendency of ‘ethnographic aesthetics’ in contemporary works of photography, site-specific projects, videos or documentary films, found objects and readymades installation. Art, especially ‘conceptual art’, has turned to scientific, sociological as well as philosophical description. Conceptual artist Joseph Kosuth called for an art practice which utilizes a model of anthropological involvement. 6 He wrote: “There obviously are structural similarities between ‘anthropologized art’ and philosophy in their relationship with the society (they both depict it – making the social reality conceivable), yet art is manifested in praxis: it depicts while it alters society.” 7 In his essay, James Clifford has explained how ethnography is not an unusual method in the history of art. He analyzes the contact between surrealism in art

and the ethnography practice in cultural anthropology. 8
Clifford believes that surrealism—as an esthetic or visual tendency that produces irrational juxtaposition of images—is basically not the privilege of the (modern) artists alone. Many ethnographic researches conducted by anthropologists in early 20 th century have also opened up a ‘surrealistic’ paradigm, as it allowed the society, the Europeans particularly, to see artifacts from a variety of culture mixed into one. He also mentions the flea market Marche aux Puces in Paris as a place that had been frequently visited by European surrealist artists such as Andre Breton. Another critic, Hal Foster, in his essay, The Artist as Ethnographer, approaches the problems of art and ethnographic differently. While calling Clifford’s concept as an anthropologist envy of artists, 9 he uses another entry, namely by expanding the topic in Walter Benjamin’s essay (1934) The Author as Producer, and Joseph Kosuth’s Artist as Anthropologist (1975) in order to show a paradigm or the ‘new left’ realism model in art. 10 He argues how in ethnographic tendencies, the participation of a community in an art project can be imagined as a way toward the emancipation of the other community, i.e., of the proletariat or the oppressed (in Benjamin’s definition) and cultural-other (Kosuth). F o s t e r, h o w e v e r, a l s o c r i t i c i z e s t h e ethnographic turn in art that has the potentials to put the bourgeois authority and superiority back to place, by pointing several art projects that in contradiction
Seni, terutama ‘seni konseptual’, menjadi deskripsi saintifik, sosiologis sekaligus filosofis. Seniman konseptual Joseph Kosuth pernah menganjurkan praktik seni yang memanfaatkan model keterlibatan antropologis. 6 Tulisnya: “There obviously are structural similarities between ‘anthropologized art’ and philosophy in their relationship with the society (they both depict it – making the social reality conceivable), yet art is manifested in praxis: it depicts while it alters society.” 7 Dalam esainya, James Clifford pernah menjelaskan bagaimana etnografi bukanlah metode yang asing dalam sejarah seni rupa. Riset-
may produce class and cultural ‘othering’. For Foster, artists, nevertheless, can never be detached from the capitalistic bourgeois art institution, and thus the objects or certain communities presented in participatory art projects bear the risks of falling down to the class system subordination, as well as stereotyped bourgeois cultural taste: Art becomes a pseudo-ethnographic practice which, instead of advocating the Other, speaks of the ‘society’ as an object or model that is re-exploited by the interests of the ideological patrons, as seen in the sponsor’s social activities, economic development and the public relations. 11 Undoubtedly, in some Ade Darmawan’s projects—including those he did in collaboration with ruangrupa—there has been a tendency that strongly leads toward an ethnographic and anthropological attitude. It is obviously demonstrated in the SaD project, especially when Oji and Ika were asked to become the participants representing consumers in a supermarket. Yet, the HRD tends shows Ade’s personality, as he made himseld as the subject/object/participant in the shopping activities. Instead of merely working as an ethnographer and producer of an artistic project, he first involved himself as a consumer in transaction spaces in the flea market—he is not a researcher who has distance with the reality. The secondhand goods he utilizes in his works have gone through a transformation, a shift of possession, also personalization through Ade’s obsession with used goods. Here the artist’s position is equal to that of other secondhand enthusiasts. Thus, instead of found-objects, I prefer using the

term consumed objects to underline the significance of exchange in Ade’s works. Prior to constructing the signs into artworks, Ade has already mulled over the market environment and the shopping process as a diverging pleasure. And due to his meditation, the HRD, in my opinion, is an art project that is loaded with speculation, satire, as well as self-criticism.

Lihat katalog Seni Rupa Baru, Proyek I, Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi, Taman Ismail Marjuki, Jakarta, 1987. This exhibition indicates the return of New Art Movement artists after being inactive for seven years. It is a collective project that marks the birth of 1987 New Art Movement Manifesto, exhibiting visual arrangement of sculptures or puppet-like objects acting as the buyer and the seller, spaces and decoration objects, posters, stickers, etc. which might remind the viewers of the experience of being in a shopping center. etnografis, partisipasi suatu komunitas dalam proyekproyek seni dapat dibayangkan menjadi jalan menuju emansipasi kaum liyan, yakni kaum proletar atau kaum tertindas (menurut Benjamin) dan ‘liyanbudaya’ (cultural other, Kosuth). 11
To differ the ‘situation’ in Supply and Demand from ‘situational work’ referred to in New Art Movement, I refer to the explanation regarding Pasaraya Dunia Fantasi exhibition in Asikin Hasan’s research, Gerakan Seni Rupa Baru Indonesia (Indonesian New Art Movement), thesis, Art Department, Faculty of Art and Design, Bandung Institute of Technology, 1992 (unpublished). 5 Semua penjelasan tentang transformasi modal simbolik di pasar loak di sini mengacu pada teori-teori Pierre Bourdieu. Lihat misalnya: The Field of Cultural Production: Essays on Art and Literature, Columbia University Press, 1984. All the explanation regarding transformation of symbolical capital in a flea market here refers to Pierre Bourdieu’s theories. See, for example: The Field of Cultural Production: Essays on Art and Literature, Columbia University Press, 1984. The pattern of transformation basically can also be found in other market types, including contemporary art market.

Tidak bisa disangkal, dalam proyek-proyek Ade Darmawan—termasuk yang dikerjakannya bersama ruangrupa—terdapat tendensi yang secara kuat m e n g a r a h p a d a s i k a p e t n o g r a f i s dan antropologis.

Hendro Wiyanto: Dalam beberapa kesempatan, kamu sering berbicara mengenai moda produksi. (Posisi)
Hendro Wiyanto: On several occasions you talked about production mode. Alright, let’s suppose in ever y artistic activity there is a production mode being put into practice by an artist. What kind of production modes that gave birth to your works, and you believe in as an artist? Ade Darmawan: First of all, I will have to tell you about the image, the visuals. What are the visuals now like, actually? The visual civilization and today’s visual production modes, what are they like? What I am saying, it’s not just about what an artist does, but also the people, and the (visual) industry. It’s about how the modes of production that I choose exist among all that. I no longer see an artist’s position as central, as the center of consciousness, either in any artists’ statement or works. The (position of the) artists has to do with the systems outside the art world. There is a variety of production modes outside (the ar tists).

Satu, soal nation-state. Buat banyak
I actually counted it. I was interested in the research pattern and subject matter. In the Supply and Demand (solo exhibition at CCF, Jakar ta in 2003, and Kedai Kebun Forum, Yogyakarta in 2004), the subject matter is about production and consumption. But for that exhibition I didn’t go into the history domain as in this project (Human Resource Development or HRD at Ark Galerie, Jakarta, Sept 23 – Oct 24, 2012), but there’s a bit about memory. You mean the grand histor y or personal memor y? Memory, especially dealing with the personal and the anonymous. But also history, but not the objective as ‘the History’. I want my works to be absorbed by other people also as a personal histories. There are versions that can actually be chosen when the histories are juxtaposed. For example, the installation with books, it actually has three subject-matters. First, about nation-state. Second is economic issue, capitalism, wealth, success, and the third is beliefs and religion. In the work, there are a lot of intersections among the three. The three issues—nation-state, capitalism and religion, what were they based on? Our contemporary life has been steered by those three institutional mainstreams… the state, religion and capitalism. To many, the problem may sound as simple as the wish to become rich and go to heaven. The issues looks separated, but there are large intersections among the three, as they direct the desire of our daily consumption, as well as spreading
our common fear. They are all always in collaboration. Our comfort, fear and madness are also actually defined by those three mainstreams. The books, if you see them side by side, create irony, humor... and there is also absurdity. The diagrams prove that. The circular diagram, from the machine to religion, wealth, success, are the beliefs being used by the state too. There is also humor in the work. If your concern is ‘the contemporar y life’, why are you using the local books published in the 1960s that are still dealing with the state, religion and capitalistic economy as ‘the reference’. Isn’t that contradictor y? I think all of us now are experiencing a disorientation and lacking of confidence. We’re not confident with the institutions that we ourselves build, which are now in crisis, namely religion, the state, and capitalism. I’m interested to see how the growth of civilization, contending

thoughts, sciences, also their clashes and crisis. I want to see them in retrospect, particularly in the era where we were first bombarded by capitalism. I’m interested to see how we change into homo economicus. What’s the relation between the research and your visual language? Indeed, this is not only a visual research, but also a cultural research. The process of collecting, observing, assuming, are parts of the artistic process itself. In this project I also do a lot of transcoding, a lot of visual transformation, and try to use several approaches. When I found some data or visual facts, I don’t present them directly as they are. It’s about how data, converted into visual codes, then being inserted in a presentation mechanism. On the visual level, I try to show the relations
between contradictory or even unrelated issues, which are connected as well as intersecting to each other. In this project I’m also interested in the traces, things that I have actually observed for long. So what about these traces? The interest in the traces has to do with my own interest in memory and history which even more often operate on personal and anonymous level in city space. I see this as a result of what we’ve done with space and time, how we interpret and dream about ourselves. This is about the traces of works, efforts, failure, success, dreams, everything in relation with the productionconsumption in the society. In our day-today reality, those traces are the one that can best show our desires. I have also been long interested to explore the traces of the working- and middle-class people through the traces or the garbage. True, one of the achievements in the pattern of excessive production and consumption of our contemporary society is the garbage. The domestic space and work space as well as numerous things in between show the ideas, history of object, and memories. We can simply define that urban people are actually domestic people and workers. It’s obvious in their way of shopping. Urban experts say, Jakarta is ‘a city without citizens’, and from a sociologist I’ve heard about ‘the end of social’. What is meant by ‘the end of social’ is the impossibility for us to act together, which also means the end of ‘the polis’, that is as ‘political citizen’. Only after

1998 we often heard of the ‘class-action’ from citizens of place like Jakarta, and we now perhaps also see the end of politics among the House members, as politics to them means sharing the power and money? Is your concern of publicness in such citizenship context? And whether the meaning of ‘the end of social’ (relations), has pushed the artists, say, ruangrupa, to create an initiative that proclaim themselves a community? I believe that the question is more related to the artist’s position as an agent of change, again this is a hope that is too pompous for now J. But the fact that there are changes in the people’s attitude mentioned, it becomes something really important to consider. With regards how people build or define joint or collective institutions, I’m very much interested in the experimentation of social construct and new negotiation in the framework of citizenship. This point is interesting to be thought of in a form of experimentation carried out by small- and middle-scaled bodies, like an artist group or community. I want a more clear explanation about the mode of production you mentioned. Can you explain in a more essential way, for instance, what makes you, as an artist, different from the other artists from previous generation. Can you point out more precisely the difference? One thing for sure, I don’t do painting. I don’t paint and make sculpture. Everything is formulated. I think it’s more about a mode of thinking.
gaan. Salah satu perbedaan yang cukup m e n d a s a r t e n t u n y a a d a l a h s o a l keagenan ini. Kamu pernah menyinggung
This must be related to agency, the subject position or that sort? One of the most basic differences is, of course, the agency issue. You mentioned about cultural production and habitus. This habitus cannot be sorted-out by a sole agent. The sole agent is the one producing, for example, paintings and sculptures, isn’t it? Do you think by entering that field you are imagining that it’s not only agency but also its changing role. If connected to, for example, the publicness issue that you always bring about, like through ruangrupa and your thoughts. If we see it from the general public’s position, in the all-accelerated time like now, artist who only tries to produce images play an irrelevant role, as everybody is also producing images. As tools and all those technologies have spread so wide. Unless the artist can provide a new perspective in seeing the images. So the

question is, what do the artists do? Why do people still paint and make works? In my opinion, that is the current challenge to the art and artist’s position. So the artists’ agency must keep changing in their position to determine the important role of their contributing knowledge. Therefore, I actually put the artist’s position as a professional cultural producer. His important position will be more obvious when he becomes a collaborator, a negotiator, facilitator, organizer. The works that offer new systems or are involved in social, political system outside or beyond the artistic creative work system. That what makes him different from in the previous traditions, where the artists are also so centralized and elitist. You once said that the artist’s medium is actually the media culture itself. But we can’t get out of there, our visual culture framework. So where is the artist’s change to be the subject in the context of the agent (of change)? As the tempter of faith. As virus. Jolting our daily beliefs. With questions, games, pretension, terror, sense of humor, crime, by stealing, by all kinds of transformation. As a thorn in the flesh, a wolf in sheep’s clothing J.. And this must be carried out with efforts.
r o u n d a bout, which became a nationwide news? The public has such a great performative capability... Yesterday I heard somebody, after killing his girlfriend, threw himself toward an oncoming train. That is so performative, that dramatic. What else, what other scene that a theater wishes to perform?

harus dilakukan dengan keras.

reading Pos Kota than coming to an exhibition. It’s more dramatic, attractive, more performative, and inspiring. What inspirations do galleries offer now?
Jadi kenyataan (sudah) menjadi teater itu sendiri.
In the way they inspire and evoke imagination. In the end, what has to be written is not only history. Imagination must also be rewritten. Sometimes I also like to mull over the role of fiction in our reality in the society now.

In what sense the artists are less sophisticated?
Or when you see the entire reality before us—which for the time being can’t be called art—you instead see it from art perspective. That is why it’s inspiring. Is it so? When you saw the bull brought to the palace, that is due to your knowledge on the performative, which is constructed by performance art tradition. So, is it not the reality that replaces art? So the question is not, “So where is theater, where is performance, where is artwork?”, rather, with an art awareness ever ything we see is art? But if we go back to the public awareness, it means by the end of the day only the space makes the difference. It’s only the sacrality of space. You once said that artists who throw critiques only jump in middle of the issue, not creating a new issue. W h a t t h e government doesn’t do is what the critique is about. So, they only ‘borrow’ the issue. So, where is the agency’s deconstruction really?
kacamata seni. Yah, jadinya numpang aja. Nah, dimana dekonstruksi keagenan itu sebetulnya?
In our mind, in the awareness of the space differences. Well, that is when everyday life turns into art. That is the jolt, exactly at the transformation. For example, why do I bother using vitrine? It’s actually a part of that strategy as well. I want to complete these things, by freezing them. There are some of the things there, which I didn’t change at all. So there is a tension between everyday life and the gallery space. I wrote one line that I put in OK Video festival catalog: I’m always happy w h en so m ebo dy see a w o rk an d say, “I can make a work like this.” So actually the border (between art and non-art) still exists? I think so. For the sake of history and the market. Now regarding visual culture. If you were to define, what kind of visual culture that surrounds us now? Does the world visual

Ya, ketika everyday life menjadi art. Di situlah penggoyahnya, pada perpindahan itu. Misalnya, kenapa aku musti pakai vitrin?

In visual culture such as this, do the artist not become some kind of a mere
We start with what is around us first, okay. Our current visual culture is running with high speed, that’s for sure. So, freezing it is important. Then, it’s also like the collage, overlapped. Due to the overlap, we enjoy it like zapping, scanning the channels, just as we are watching TV. I have arranged the books in the same way as when we read newspaper. There are tensions in the narratives that are fragmented. What makes them relevant is actually the pages, the media. The relations of the narratives inside are schizophrenic.
Menurutku masih ada. Untuk kebutuhan sejarah dan pasar. Sekarang mengenai budaya visual.
operator? A tech-crazed operator. Is it likely that there is still an artist who can really create a new genre out of it? A new language, truly new… what is your opinion about this? Perhaps there is. But frankly I don’t have high hopes. The question is, is new language necessary? Now, I tend to believe that technology is the one that will bring cultural change more than artist. The latest changes are done by technology, not artists. I think now artists should feel not confident. But you’re so confident in this exhibition. Then what is the expectation left? Tensions. The platforms tension, the tension between reality and all those beyond
