SHEN TIEMEI
NEW OPERA BY GUO WENJING AND FILM BY FRANK SCHEFFER PUT THE AUDIENCE TO THE TEST by Frank Kouwenhoven ‘Do you think a Western audience will be able to follow this music?’ Conductor Ed Spanjaard looks worried as he puts this question to the Chinese composer Guo Wenjing. They have just rehearsed Guo’s new opera Si fan (Desire for Love), which is premiering at the Holland Festival together with visuals by Frank Scheffer as Het Innerlijke Landschap (The Inner Landscape). The theatre piece has a leading role for Shen Tiemei, star singer of Sichuanese opera, but also gives a prominent part to Chinese percussion, with shrill symbols, piercing gongs and high drums that accompany the singing. For Ed Spanjaard, the resulting sound is sometimes is too sharp, and he wants to know if this is really the composer’s intention. Isn’t Guo asking too much of his Western listeners with all those loud, high frequencies? Naturally, this is the ‘prototypical’ sound of Chinese opera. Guo shrugs his shoulders in a grumpy manner typical of him and throws the ball back at Spanjaard: So does he have a solution? The above is a telling scene from Frank Scheffer’s documentary about Guo Wenjing, one of China’s most important 5
langrijkste hedendaagse componisten.
contemporary composers. The film and the opera form a whole; the images from the documentary flow seamlessly into background projections once the opera starts. Guo Wenjing has enjoyed a considerable reputation in the Netherlands since the 1990s – partly thanks to the Nieuw Ensemble and the Holland Festival – and is an old hand at Chinese opera. For example, he wrote Chinese Heroines, a trilogy of operas partly in traditional Chinese style about three legendary female warriors, which was shown at the Holland Festival in 2008. Critics lauded the three operas, even though Chinese opera turned out not to be everyone’s cup of tea. Chinese Heroines was too much of an assault on some people’s ears and they left early. But the vast majority of the audience sat it out and rewarded the performers with standing ovations. In China itself, however, the popularity of traditional theatre is declining, even though this has less to do with loud percussion or falsetto voices than with its underacted, archaic performance style and musical refinement, all of which seems to have little to do with the experience of modern city dwellers, who in the People’s Republic have sooner grown up with games, action films and a rapidly modernizing society than with traditional opera. Traditional village life is dying out in China. Mass migration to the big cities is undermining the framework of local community spirit and village rituals that gave traditional theatre its unique position as a cohesive force. The thundering percussion aimed straight at the gods in heaven in Chinese opera does indeed still exist, as do the sophisticated embellishments in the vocals and the subtle movements of the actors, but 6
opera as the most important form of art or as a necessary ritual is definitely on the wane in China; the genre is struggling. In his film, Frank Scheffer records the rapid changes in China, the loss of traditions – we see images of a splendid village opera that attracts only a few spectators – but also the rise of youth culture and new music. Here the filmmaker and the composer find common ground, for neither one avoids confrontation with the modern era or a rapidly changing world. The question is: What direction will music take in the future, what direction will humanity take? And what will be the role of a country like China, which at the moment is putting an increasingly stronger stamp on the rest of the world but which, as we know, has little respect for individual freedoms? Guo has witnessed the sweeping transformations of his country in person. Unlike so many other composers of his generation (Tan Dun, for instance, and Chen Qigang) he decided to stay in China instead of moving abroad, and this has enhanced his reputation as an artist who has remained close to the sources of his own culture. Guo grew up during the Cultural Revolution in the city of Chongqing, in the freewheeling southern province of Sichuan. At the time, tanks rolled through the streets and cannons were fired into the city from ships on the Yangtze River. ‘It was dangerous, but I was a child; I enjoyed it,’ says Guo. ‘My parents bought a violin in the hopes of keeping me off the streets. That was my first introduction to music.’ Western classical music, but the traditional music of Sichuan also interested him immensely. His new work Si fan is directly based on a traditional 7
opera and even incorporates entire arias from it. Guo would like to breathe new life into the old style of opera by combining it with Western instruments and modern techniques of composing, in the hopes of reviving the genre. ‘It’s not even that I especially like it,’ he says about Sichuanese opera, ‘but that music is just in me.’ His response is essentially the same when Ed Spanjaard reminds him of the first operas he wrote for the Nieuw Ensemble, such as the nightmarish Wolf Cub Village from 1994, whose tone has been compared with Alban Berg’s Wozzeck, and according to Spanjaard was ‘more dramatic’ than his present music. ‘You are writing differently now,’ observes Spanjaard, wanting to know what has actually inspired Guo to delve more and more deeply into traditional Chinese opera. The composer will not or cannot do too much theorizing about this, only saying that he primarily makes what he likes, and that perhaps it isn’t even a real choice: ‘Life has done it.’ Guo first began working with opera singer Shen Tiemei back in 2004, when he wrote an opera for her, Fenyiting (also performed by the Nieuw Ensemble). The current project embroiders upon that. Si Fan is once again a work with voices and percussion as the most important instruments. Sichuanese operas – unlike most other Chinese opera genres – were traditionally performed entirely without melodic instruments; this changed during the last century. In Amsterdam, besides a Chinese mouth harp (sheng) and a dulcimer (yangqin) – both now part of the usual instrumentation of Sichuanese opera – the work being presented includes some Western melodic instruments. But apart from that, vocals and percussion are the sounds which are 8
laatste eeuw verandering gekomen.
mainly heard and they are – perhaps not coincidentally – also Guo Wenjing’s strongest sides as a composer. With his previous compositions, he was especially noted for his strong vocal lines and richly variegated percussion parts. Fenyiting and the Heroine trilogy were mainly about strong women: courtesans or female warriors who intervene in government affairs or in the rulings of the court as feminists avant-la-lettre. In Si fan, a strong woman again takes the floor, this time a Buddhist nun who longs for a man, and ultimately chooses worldly freedom: she leaves the convent. Opera singer Shen Tiemei sings the role with total abandon, but says that she does not identify with the nun’s fate. She herself is a Buddhist, and does not consider Buddhist teaching to be a straitjacket. Doesn’t the theme of freedom in this opera automatically have a political charge because of its Chinese context? Guo himself does not go into this. Frank Scheffer, who followed the rehearsals closely, believes that this aspect is indeed part of it, although not explicitly. Nor did he want to give a political tone to his documentary about Guo. ‘I am a documentary maker from the fourth generation, after Joris Ivens, Bert Haanstra and Johan van der Keuken. I respect their work very much, but I have little faith in the politically-socially engaged themes of the films of Ivens and Van der Keuken. I am more interested in the cultural–philosophical context. For instance, in Gozaran/Time Passing, a film I made about the symphony orchestra of Teheran, I never explicitly refer to politics. Everybody knows what goes on there, and also in China. Anyhow, I think that the language of music is on a higher level 9
than the language of politics.’ Nonetheless, Guo Wenjing makes a remark in Scheffer’s film that could not be more clear. The economy might be doing a lot better in China, which also has a favourable impact on cultural life, says the composer, but ‘without freedom there is no great art’. He thinks things could be better in China in that regard. Guo has a reputation for being an unconventional and quirky individual. ‘Not an easy man to work with,’ according to Frank Scheffer. The filmmaker had a hard time getting used to an artist who, unlike Cage, Boulez, Carter and other composers that he had previously portrayed, did not volunteer conceptual, carefully worded narratives but instead sometimes came across as stubborn and uncommunicative and did not want to say too much about his music. ‘Talking with him was difficult, also because of the language barrier. But when he does loosen up, you realize that there’s an awful lot going on under the surface. It gets profound.’ In Guo Wenjing’s case, Scheffer was extremely interested in the relationship of his music to landscape, which offered an immediate starting point for the film. He furthermore saw that Guo’s music would pose significant challenges for the performers. ‘Guo has trouble sufficiently accommodating the Western idiom of the Nieuw Ensemble in his composing. His thinking is deeply rooted in Chinese traditions. But this was also what fascinated me so much about the composer Nadar Mashayeki in my earlier film on Iran. His thinking too is primarily rooted in his own idiom and songs, and in fact he places modern music side by side with Persian singing, without doing harm to that tradition.’ 10
To Scheffer’s way of thinking, Western art ‘ended up at sea’ in the late 20th century. ‘It lost all direction,’ he says. ‘What is really avant-garde nowadays? In my opinion, what is really new is cultural dialogue, but then conducted on an equal level, where things from different cultures are fully juxtaposed. In other words, not a fusion, not an informal mixing of elements, but true dialogue. There was also cultural dialogue before this, of course, but it was carried out with too much of a Western feeling of superiority.’ The composer himself says in this regard, ‘I don’t make music for the world or for China. I simply follow my heart. Nobody can make rules about how Chinese music ought to sound. Every preconceived idea about that is unfounded. But my aim is to create, and I feel that I have solid ground beneath my feet.

grote reputatie.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
The music of Guo Wenjing (1956) is often dark, wild and mysterious, imbued with the rough atmosphere of his city of birth, Chongqing. His orchestral works and theatre pieces are about cannibals, witchcraft, coffins cryptically hanging from cliffs, ancient inscriptions on bones, and more. He gained international success with his dark Wolf Cub Village from 1994, an opera about madness that the newspaper Le Monde compared to Berg’s Wozzeck and Tchaikovsky’s The Nose; and with its lyrical successor, Night Banquet (1998), inspired by a painting from Southern Tang. His later operas include Poet Li Bai (2010), about the famed Tang poet Li Bai; and Luotuo Xiangzi (The Rickshaw Boy, 2014), after a novel by Lao She. Apart from a short stay in New York, Guo Wenjing has always remained in China, where he heads up the Composition Department of the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. Over the years, he has immersed himself more and more in the traditions of Chinese music and the style of his own works have become closer to traditional Chinese (opera) styles, a development that could be seen in the opera Fenyiting (2004) and has continued in the trilogy Chinese Heldinnen (2008) and in his most recent work, Si Fan (2015). The film documentaries of Frank Scheffer (b. 1956 in Venlo, NL) offer an overview of great composers from the 20th century: Conducting Mahler (1996), on the Mahler Festival in Amsterdam in 1995; Five Orchestral Pieces (1994), about Arnold Schoenberg; Final Chorale (1990), on Igor Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments; The One All Alone (2009), about Edgard Varèse; films about Louis Andriessen (1997), Luciano Berio (1999), Pierre Boulez (1993), Karlheinz Stockhausen (1996), Elliott Carter (2005) and John Cage (1987, 2012); and a trilogy about Frank Zappa. Scheffer’s style of working is what he calls ‘conscientious transformation’, an attempt to analyse what is happening in the music and put that into his own language of images. In doing this, Scheffer has sought to collaborate more and more closely with composers and performers. Several of his films have served as introductions to concerts, for instance, and for the opera Tea by Tan Dun, he not only made a documentary (2005), but also did the video design for the performances of Tea. Het Innerlijke Landschap at the Holland Festival is again a new step in this development: not only did

Scheffer provide background images for Guo’s opera; here, he also commissioned the music. The project with Guo testifies to Scheffer’s growing interest in cultural dialogue between East and West, which has already been expressed in the film Gozaran/Time Passing (2009, about the Teheran Philharmonic Orchestra and the Iranian conductor/composer Nader Mashayeki), and will be continued with films on the clarinettist Kinan Azmeh from Damascus (a musical journey to Turkey, Syria and Jordan) and on the Indian musician Dhruba Ghosh. BIOGRAPHIES Shen Tiemei is one of the most representative inheritors and most renowned performing artists of Sichuan opera. Using elements from Beijing opera and other local traditional operas, Tiemei has developed her own singing style within Sichuan opera, which has greatly enriched the art of opera singing with regard to the power and possibility of artistic expression and appeal. Her way of singing is delicate, clear and bright, giving vivid expression to her roles. Endowing Sichuan opera with a brand new meaning in relation to the modern context, Shen Tiemei has brought this traditional form of Chinese opera into the world of modern opera. Tiemei has performed around the world. Her performance in Guo Wenjing’s Feng Yi Ting received fantastic reviews.

The ensemble has introduced a great number of non-Western composers. Their concert series New Music from China was highly successful in 1991 in 1992. After that, the Nieuw Ensemble premiered various Chinese operas and by now has been a guest in China several times.
Donations to the Festival are taxdeductible Between 1 January 2012 and 1 January 2018, a special tax law is in effect which makes it more advantageous to make charitable donations. Called the ‘Geefwet’, this law allows you to claim your deductions to cultural organizations with ANBI status with an additional 25% for tax benefits (a total of 125%). The Holland Festival has such an ANBI status. The fiscal advantage applies to donations that total a maximum of € 5.000 annually. If you donate more than € 5.000 to registered charities, you can deduct the remaining amount for the regular percentage (100%). The advantages of the Geefwet apply to all taxpayers (private parties and businesses) and are applicable to both individual and periodical gifts. Advantages of a periodical gift Restrictions apply to deductions for individual gifts. Individual gifts are tax-deductible when the total amount of gifts given in one year surpasses 1% of your income, with a minimum of € 60. The amount given above the minimum threshold is tax-deductible. The maximum deductible amount is 10% of your threshold income. There are fiscal benefits for periodical gifts with an annuity construction for five years and upwards. If you choose to support the Holland Festival for a minimum of five years, your gift will be fully taxdeductible.
