The street is where everyone is aware of their own bodily presence and where they are alert to the non-verbal signals from others. In this public space, the BodyTalks - Video Art & Cinedans in Public Space exhibition shows 23 videos that focus on the moving body. The selected works of art offer a diverse picture of the strength, wealth and scope of non-verbal communication and dance. The videos and short dance films have rarely been shown outside the walls of arts institutions or (movie) theatres, yet thanks to their specific content they can easily be shown in the urban landscape. In the public space, they enter into a direct oneon-one relationship with the onlooker or passerby in the street. BodyTalks is a study into how the disciplines of video art and short dance films influence each other, and how they can evoke new, unexpected interpretations of bodily expression or body language. Professional dancers, artists and performers make silent yet pervasive ‘utterances’ about themes such as man/ woman relationships, political-social topicalities and the search for an individual identity in today’s image culture. The video projections by high-profile artists and young talents visualise how dance can be a linguistic aid and how non-verbal communication can become choreography. (Bart van den Boom)

Marina Abramovic Mambo
Yves Ackermann Prototype

Brusselsestraat 6
In Mambo (version 2003), Marina Abramovic´ (Serbia, 1946) invites the visitor to dance the Mambo with her, just as she did when in 2003 during a three-hour performance, Abramovic´ danced on the same floor as the one in this room. Like the ten pairs of (male) shoes waiting for the visitor to put on, her red high heels were equipped with magnets. The magnets don’t make dancing easy, but because of the artist’s determination, her dance looks free and gracious. For the ‘dance partners’, it will be quite difficult to move as gracefully as Abramovic´ . It takes a lot of effort to move on this magnetic dancefloor. Mambo is based on the idea, just like many other works by Abramovic´, that energy flows directly between the artist and the audience during a performance. By combining the use of video and objects, she tries to relive this energy exchange. With thanks to Krakks and the Netherlands Media Art Institute (NIMK, Amsterdam)
Amplification of an idea – Prototype (2007) by Yves Ackermann (Switserland, 1979) bears resemblance to a delayed scene, out of context, from a bad crime movie. In a dark room, we see a man getting shot. The shots don’t come from outside, but like real films, are incorporated into his jacket. His body reacts to the ‘bullets’, hitting him left and right. Because of the exaggerated reaction of the man and the delay in the image, his movements become graceful and this shooting gains a choreographic, aesthetic charge. Prototype is a modern rendition of the dying swan, a rendition that seems inspired by contemporary ‘war games’ or a classic spaghetti western where the protagonist won’t die or fall to the ground. That Prototype turns out to be a dance, is strengthened by the fact that the man still stands, even after a two-minute bullet attack. A cowboy, even a video game hero, would have gone down.
In the video Rehearsal II (2001) by Francis Alÿs (Belgium, 1959), a stripper rehearses her act. Because she dresses and undresses continually, her striptease is stripped of any erotic charge. The singing, audible in the background, comes from an opera singer who rehearses accompanied by a pianist – also rehearsing. The short songs direct the repetitive movements of the stripper; when the singer stops, the stripper either dresses or undresses. Unlike a real striptease, the stripper pays no attention to her public; she is in her own world, looking for the dance moves that might captivate her audience. What remains, is a melancholic and touching exercise in which the actual striptease is continually delayed. The blue filter in the film gives her strip act a more detached feel; clearly there is a camera (viewfinder), a distance, between viewer and dancer. With thanks to Mr. Peelen

In her work, Tammuz Binshtock (Israel, 1979) operates at the crossroads of visual arts, dance and theatre. She considers soccer and television to be parts of the same cultural arena; they all explore the same macho culture as depicted by the media. In her work Pars pro toto (2000-2005) – Latin for ‘a part stands for the whole’- Binshtock analyses the relationship between action and reaction. She visualises the ubiquitous macho body language that characterises soccer. At the same time, the work shows how new forms of presence become visible through an unexpected absence. The soccer players without a ball become dancers; they move as if they are dancing in a free improvisation. With thanks to The Blue Company

Capucijnengang 12 - Intro in situ (binneninstallatie, indoor installation)
In Dance! In Dance! (2010) we are made to feel like witnesses of a big demonstration somewhere in Africa. We watch orderlies, who try to control the crowd with sticks. In the work of Matthijs Blonk (The Netherlands, 1952) – winner of the One Minute Dance Film 2010 – the camera follows a tall man dressed in a red and blue soccer shirt. He dances for the whole short film; forwards, backwards, sometimes directing, sometimes following the crowd. The crowd is happy, the dancing is contagious and hypnotising. The urge to dance is great – the orderlies struggle to contain the crowd with their sticks. Dance! was recorded during the Festival of a Thousand Stars in south-western Ethiopia, a region where several small tribes live, not usually in harmony. Because of famine, the tribes fight each other with cattle raids and battle over wells. In order to get to know each other better, the government has organised a festival where about fifty tribes can present their music and dance. The festival is a success, but the underlying tension remains visible and tangible; not least because of the military with their automatic rifles in the fore- and background.
Peter Bogers (The Netherlands, 1956) collected images for Unleashed Content (2011) from the internet by using certain search terms. Bogers gathered a motley collection of associative images by using search engines deliberately as steering mechanisms. A lot of the terms Bogers entered, led to content related to known cultural expressions like singing and dancing, but also unexpected and more or less obscure forms of human expression came up. Two examples of search terms Bogers set loose on YouTube were liquid dance and Arab dance. Bogers selected 36 hits out of every search term which he edited and embedded in his image and sound narrative. The installation will be showed for the first time during BodyTalks. After the opening in Maastricht, the work will continue to grow as Bogers keeps on adding material to the work. Unleashed Content beautifully visualises the urge people have to make their love for, for example dancing, public. Within the abundance of films, Bogers highlights some images for a larger audience. For a moment, the anonymous dancer occupies the spotlight, but is at the same time embedded in a multitude of similar images. The work reveals the beauty as well as the tragedy of a deeply rooted human disunity: the desire to belong and at the same time to distinguish oneself. With thanks to Intro in situ

Hoek Kommel / Brusselsestraat 25
Brusselsestraat 12
Michal Butink (The Netherlands, 1975) made ten video portraits of dancers after a difficult dance rehearsal. The video inhale /exhale (2005) was shot after a dance rehearsal by Argentinean choreographer Constanza Marcas in Berlin. On several screens, the sweaty faces of the dancers are shown. They breathe heavily, their eyes are either still full of fire or relaxed and completely saturated. Their chests move up and down, everyone in his or her own rhythm. The sound of breathing, together with the images, forms a new rhythmic work. The portraits render a beautiful impression of what just has happened. The dance has ended, but in the dancers’ eyes the choreography is still visible. On the one hand, this work stimulates both the desire for and fantasy of something that has happened, on the other hand it shows a very personal impression of the dancers surrendering. On the other side of the street, another of Butink’s works, Damrak, is shown (nr. 8). With thanks to Mr. Weyzen

In addition to being an independent artist, Michal Butink (The Netherlands, 1975) is also a VJ and she makes videos for the Dutch National Ballet’s dance shows, such as Swan Lake and Bijlmer II. Butink refers to her work as ‘moving photography’. By means of delaying, looping or freezing her videos, she generates a feeling of endlessness and stillness. Minimal and hidden details are – quite literally – lit up. She is fascinated by people’s movements: the twist of a head, the swipe of a lock of hair - she directs them in her videos. All this, when nothing much seems to happen and everything runs its natural course. Damrak (1999) is an older but leading video in Butinks work because here, for the first time, she captures human movements in public. Choreography in the public eye. This ‘un-orchestrated’ work is a powerful antidote for the works in this exhibition, which are made with pre-planned choreography. BodyTalks also shows Butinks’ work inhale/ exhale on the other side of the street (nr. 7). With thanks to AdHoc Beheer and Art2C

Compagnie Collateral Inearthia
Stéphanie Decourteille Vertiges

Brusselsestraat 120
Brusselsestraat 89
In Vertiges (2009) Stéphanie Decourteille (Canada, 1977) depict the extremely busy life of modern women by portraying only a couple of body parts. The woman who wants it all, who wants to control it all – and it leaves her completely exhausted. On music by Radiohead, Vertiges offers a critical reflection on the continuous productivity of our contemporary society. Unlike As I was leaving my city (nr. 14) by Amirali Navaee where the legs in the video bear a strong political message, the feet in this video are strongly interwoven with the dance. Every movement is a testimony to intensive and long-term training. The feet of the dancers become a means of communication: they speak a language we don’t speak, but that we can understand. The feet have become just as expressive as most people’s hands. The short dance film is based on the central role taken in the Vertiges performance by choreographer/ dancer Stéphanie Decourteille.

The short dance film Inearthia (2006) by the Swiss Compagnie Collateral is an attempt to turn the earth around – in order to escape gravity. Because of the continuous tilting of the camera, the viewer has almost the same experience as the man on the screen who is resisting a fall into the abyss. The choreography and the powerful execution of this choreography make this film really convincing. The movements of the dancer and the way the choreography is filmed add value to the work – a value that never could have been achieved on stage. The music is special as well, giving the feeling that one is on a train riding around the earth which has to brake in order to arrive at a complete standstill. Inearthia is the winner of the Cinedans Audience Award 2007, directed by Maren Sandmann with choreography by Simon Halbedo. With thanks to Mr. Van Iterson

Brusselsestraat 103
In her well-received work The Buzz Club (1996-97), Rineke Dijkstra (The Netherlands, 1959), uncovers the disarming vulnerability of young adolescents during a house party. The images, shot in Liverpool and during the Mystery World dance party in Zaandam, offer an insight into the youth culture of 15 years ago. The vulnerability of the youths, just like their pride and the awkward poses they choose when dancing in front of the camera, is timeless. While discovering their own identity, they find a support in dancing when confronted with the camera. The first part of The Buzz Club was recorded in a disco in Liverpool and shows only girls – apart from one couple making out. The second part mostly takes place in Zaandam and portrays girls and boys. All wear the same outfit, a tracksuit – now considered to be a relic from the last century. The awkward or extremely confident attitudes remain universal. The Buzz Club is on loan from Museum Het Domein - Sittard With thanks to BV Limburg and Museum Het Domein
Cao Fei (China, 1978) realised Whose Utopia (2006) in accordance with the Siemens Art Programme. In order to create this work, she stayed for six months in the OSRAM China Lighting Ltd. factory in the Chinese city of Foshan. The success of this factory has an enormous impact on the surrounding Pearl River Delta region and exercises a huge attraction on the youths in the region. They come from all over China in the hope of finding a position with the factory and a better future. Whose Utopia consists of three chapters. Part 1 shows fragments of the production process. Part 2 focuses on the poetic dreams and fantasies of the factory workers against the backdrop of the harsh reality of their working environment. The contrast is massive. The images of factory workers who dance and make music tell not only the story of talent that has no chance of being pursued, but also depict the disrupted society of contemporary China. Part 3 centres on the individual worker in a series of portraits.

Euripides Laskaridis Downlove 10:00 min
Amirali Navaee As I was leaving my city
Hoek Helmstraat / Dominicanerplein
3:00 min
In the virtual world of Downlove (2007) by Euripides Laskaridis (Greece, 1975) where emotions are forgotten, two Avatars fail to fall in love. Their sweaters however come to life, with unexpected results. The dancers give the impression very convincingly that they are computer-animated dolls. Their facial expression and the movements of the characters are reduced to the level where game developers can mimic human interaction as well as possible. The geometric and imaginative love dance by the two ‘virtual’ flesh and blood characters refers to the fact that we, real people, have grown used to a very specific body language and emotions deriving from computer games and other virtual worlds. Downlove was also made in a 3D version. With thanks to Hout Brox Maastricht
Altijd onderweg, altijd in beweging.
Amirali Navaee (Iran, 1982) lives in Teheran and is a dancer. Because of the political situation in Iran, he changed his course and chose film studies. The dance film As I was leaving my city (2007) is his first production and is about a man who leaves his beloved city. It is dedicated to his brothers in Iran, who cherish constant hope for change in their country. The three minute video shows a dancing man in the street. Always on the move, always on the go. Nowhere in the video do we see the face of the man; he is anonymous. By focusing on the legs and feet, it becomes an enchanted and dynamic walk. The work carries a strong political charge and shows affinity with Whose Utopia (nr. 12) of Cao Fei. With thanks to Manpower

Grote Gracht 87

I am a Boyband is verwant aan The Buzz Club van Rineke Dijkstra (nr. 11).
I am a Boyband (2002) by classically trained singer and artist Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay (Canada, 1973) depicts a clever parody of the boy band culture that dominated the music scene for years. The conversion of the sixteenth century madrigal (a song for multiple voices) into a pop song is not only a humorous reference to youth culture. The video also broaches more serious themes like the representation of masculinity (and homosexuality) and the individual versus the masses. The work, in which the singer occupies all four band member ‘roles’, even though slightly dated, is still very current. Video clip culture was and still is crucial for many youngsters in order to determine how to move, how to dance and how to relate to their peers. I am a Boyband is related to The Buzz Club of Rineke Dijkstra (nr. 11). Both artists establish an intriguing link between dance and youth culture. Nemerofsky Ramsay focuses on the ‘artificial’ image of band members: Dijkstra on the search for one’s own identity and the vulnerability of the youngsters’ self image on the dance floor. BodyTalks also shows Live to Tell by Nemerofsky Ramsay (nr. 16).

In Live to Tell (2002) Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay (Canada, 1973) sings and dances a song by Madonna in sixteen bare spaces. The spaces are not recognisable because of the limited range of the security cameras used. The image, which consists of sixteen different recordings, constitutes one entity because of the preconceived choreography and the montage afterwards. The fragments are at times polyphonous and the individual dance movements melt into one overall choreography. The artist presents a personal love story. ‘Live to Tell’ is a statement – it indicates surviving a difficult situation. After the personal and vulnerable performance by the artist in front of an anonymous ‘eye’, the characters proceed to the order of the day. Some wipe the floor, others replace furniture or simply walk off. With these actions, the security camera regains its static role as an observer. Nemerofsky Ramsay not only places the viewer in the role of voyeur. He also raises the question of the effect security cameras have as a means of repression. Also on show: I am a Boyband by Nemerofsky Ramsay (nr. 15).

Exercise (2008) by Lucia Nimcova (Slovakia, 1977) shows older citizens from her hometown Humenné perform stretching exercises and dance routines. They perform from memory – they are routines from communist times when it was mandatory to participate in the exercises broadcast daily by radio. A bit stiff but elated, they show us these (dance) moves from the former Soviet Block. The past turns out to be very much alive. The work shows how deeply these dancing lessons and gymnastics are anchored in the body´s memory. Nimcova displays a generation that visibly carries the past with it. Exercise is a political, but not a melancholic work. The visitor is carried away by the obvious fun the pensioners have with the endearing dance routines and gymnastics With thanks to Houx Digiprint
Elodie Pong (Unites States of America, 1966) is well-known for her subtle, analytical video works that discuss human relationships, cultural codes and the impact these have on contemporary society. The video I am a bomb (2006) shows a person dressed in a panda bear costume performing an erotic pole dancing act. The absurd dance seems to become more and more obsessive until it ends abruptly. The mask comes off and a woman looks straight into the camera. She rises and sketches a female image that is at the same time both powerful and vulnerable, explosive and inflammatory. Normally, a pole dance is performed in front of an anonymous audience, sitting in the half dark. Visitors or passers-by take on the voyeuristic role of this anonymous audience. In I am a bomb the act of pole dancing is stripped of every form of sensuality or eroticism because of the use of the bear suit. The panda makes reference to innocence and softness.
In his sculptures, videos and performances, Fernando Sánchez Castillo (Spain, 1970) takes aim at the symbolism of political and religious power. For his video Pegasus Dance (2007), he collaborated with the Military Unit of Rotterdam. The armoured trucks with water cannons, effective weapons against riots, are not used in Pegasus Dance for police actions, but to portray dancers in a sensual choreography. The armoured trucks whirl around making pirouettes in a romantic performance. Because of the graceful movements of the water cannons on the back of the trucks, the dance reminds us of a courtship dance between dragonflies or sea birds. Castillo’s ‘pas de deux’ transforms angular and blunt vehicles into graceful creatures whose body language sends out amorous signals.

In 1,2,3,4 (2007 - 2008) Zhou Tao (China, 1976) recorded morning staff meetings in over forty shops and companies in Shanghai. The video’s were edited on the rhythm of the counting (1, 2, 3, 4....) in corporate songs of these companies, which produces a very stylized image. These companies are witnessing constant changes in their collective outlook and motivations in order to secure a larger market share and high profitability. Beneath the surface of the efficiencydriven management strategies of modern companies, 1,2,3,4 shows the impact of an increasing growth in population and drastic changes in the social structure. Because of the solidarity of the groups and their body language, the individual almost gets lost in the group. The staff meetings provide for an exciting choreography. With thanks to Mr. Koopman

Montevideoaki (2005) is based on the solo performance While going on a Condition, created and danced by Hiroaki Umeda (Uruguay, 1977) and directed by Octavio Iturbe. In a feisty and rhythmic montage, we see Umeda dancing in this performance against different atmospheric backdrops in Montevideo, Uruguay. The urban surroundings add an extra dimension to Umeda’s modern dance: it seems as if his dance style has found its place. The montage and the music complement the dance. Hiroaki Umeda is a multidisciplinarian artist: choreographer, dancer, sound and light designer. Because of his extreme multimedia performances, he is now better known as an autonomous artist than a dancer or choreographer. With thanks to Zuiderlicht

In FRIEZE (2010) by Kris Verdonck (Belgium, 1974) two projections of upright, enlarged figures are on show. They are squeezed into a very small room. They are waiting. They are trying to stay upright, but slowly, they collapse. Nonetheless, they try to keep their dignity. ‘Keeping up appearances’ – until the moment they turn completely upside-down. Then they scramble up again, smooth over their clothes and stare ahead as if nothing had happened. In FRIEZE, Verdonck continues working on the theme he used before in earlier projections. You could call them typical ‘Verdonck characters’. Some kind of businessmen, dressed impeccably, civilised and Western but stuck in a system; in an untenable situation. They do not ask questions. Submissively they accept their fate. Perseverance is key. The characters in FRIEZE can be considered to be modern day versions of the caryatides: the human figures that replaced the columns in classical architecture. They were functional as well as ornamental and radiated power. The caryatides of FRIEZE however, are not shy in showing their vulnerability. Met dank aan Theater aan het Vrijthof
Kris Verdonck (Belgium, 1974) occupies a special place in the wide field of video artists and film makers / choreographers. His works seem to originate from a theatrical approach in which the characters ‘on screen’ are less dancers than silent or whispering actors. GOSSIP (2010) shows a large group of people from a ‘higher class’ who are staring at the audience. They stand close to one other, side by side. What stands out, is the fact that they are all the same height. They whisper in each others’ ears, incomprehensible to the audience. At times, the whispering and gossiping stops and hard laughing can be heard. Sometimes the row of people is silent. The projected characters sometimes look the audience straight in the eyes, with patronising and smirking looks. Gossip is a ‘tableau vivant’ that ridicules and looks down on the audience. The viewer sees a pseudo-happy façade, a representation of a society standing at the edge of an abyss. They have suppressed their fear, confusion and sense of ‘Unheimlichkeit’. That there are no children in the line up speaks volumes. BodyTalks also shows FRIEZE by Kris Verdonck (nr. 22). With thanks to Theater aan het Vrijthof Image Cao Fei / 'Whose Utopia', 2006

CINEDANS FESTIVAL
CINEDANS FESTIVAL
Cinedans International Film, Dance and Media Festival is a unique festival – both in The Netherlands as well as abroad. Dance films are the central focus. Cinedans describes a “dance film” as a true synthesis between two different media – dance and cinematography. At Cinedans the emphasis will lie on choreographies created specifically for the camera and on special film adaptations of existing dance performances. Furthermore, a selection of special documentaries and retrospectives will be shown. During the festival approximately sixty films from all over the world will be screened. In addition to the film programme, there will be readings, debates and workshops to attend.

In the ever-changing landscape of media, the creators are increasingly seeking different ways of telling their stories. New media and modern technology have entered the scene – and there are new possibilities and changing insights. Dance film is no longer “movement on the black screen”, new forms are developing: installations, video clips, interactive projects … Contemporary “dance films” are often autonomous pieces of art with a language of their own and an expressiveness that cannot be pigeonholed. Cinedans closely follows this movement. Cinedans also organizes “Cinedans on tour” and travels across the world to screen a selection of the film programme.
