• Area of natural forest pulped by the two groups was estimated based on published information on pulp production capacities of SMG/APP’s Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper mill and RGE/APRIL’s Riau Andalan Pulp & Paper mill since their beginning, % natural forest wood supply to the mills and various conversion factors to estimate areas of natural forest needed to be harvested, as well as 2009 and 2010 annual cutting licenses issued by the Ministry of Forestry. • Note that both groups pulped additional natural forests outside Riau. On impact of the two groups on Riau’s emission, read: • WWF Indonesia (2008) Deforestation, Forest Degradation, Biodiversity Loss and CO2 Emissions in Riau, Sumatra, Indonesia. http://www.worldwildlife.org/who/media/press/2008/WWFPresitem7596.html • WWF Indonesia (2010) Sumatra‘s Forests, their Wildlife and the Climate - Windows in Time: 1985, 1990, 2000, and 2009. A quantitative assessment of some of Sumatra’s natural resources submitted as technical report by invitation to the National Forestry Council (DKN) and the National Development Planning Agency (BAPPENAS) of Indonesia. http://assets.wwfid.panda.org/downloads/wwf_indonesia__2010__sumatran_forests_ wildlife_climate_report_for_dkn___bappenas.pdf • Emissions from potential new natural forest and peat conversion by the two groups were calculated as follows: • Two groups together managed 712,775 hectares of natural peatland forest in 2008/2009. • If we assume 86 ton CO2/ha/year of peat emissions from pulpwood plantation on peat, based on Hooijer et al. (2010) http://www.biogeosciences.net/7/1505/2010/bg-7-15052010.pdf, annual CO2 emissions from these areas could be 61 megatons/year. • Riau’s reference emission level was around 425 megatons according to the National REDD+ Strategy Draft 1 Revised, available at http://www.un.or.id/sites/default/files/COMPLETEStranas1RevisedEng%20final%20versi on.pdf. • Forestry sector reduction target is based on the National REDD+ Strategy Draft 1 Revised and http://www.embassyofindonesia.org/news/2010/02/news014.htm
