Nieuwsbulletin in Nederlands én Engels
As you may have noticed, the faculty’s Newsletter contains more English articles and sections with each new issue. In this way the newsletter wishes to provide information for the international staff member without losing the current Dutch reader. In the end the newsletter will present English as well as Dutch articles. The language of an article is attuned to the language of the reader or staff member for whom the article is most likely to be of interest. From now on the section ‘Research news’ will be entirely in English, whereas the section ‘Education news’ will present Dutch articles. These are summarized in the ‘Highlights of Dutch articles’ on the back so no one misses any important news. The first section ‘Faculty News’ will be in English as well as in Dutch.

Sanderling flies 6,000 kilometres non-stop October14, 2009 A sanderling, with a departure weight of just over a hundred grams, has flown the 6,000 kilometres from Norway to Ghana in less than five days. The sanderling was recognized by the coloured rings on its legs. Biologists from the University of Groningen and the University of Accra in Ghana give the birds coloured leg rings to learn more about how they live and their survival chances. Jackdaw soap opera yields important information on ageing October 07, 2009 Working hard and providing for many offspring takes a lot of energy. Even jackdaws experience the consequences of this, behavioural biologist Martijn Salomons discovered. He studied a jackdaw colony in Harenand concluded that there is a clear connection between the number of chicks in a brood and their health and survival chances. He also examined the effects of brood size on the life expectancy of parents.

Extremely violent behaviour due to low serotonin levels October 06, 2009 Not everyone copes with social conflicts in the same way. Most people, for example, do not choose violence. However, a small group of people display extremely violent behaviour in such situations. This is something that has a major impact on our society. Doretta Caramaschi has discovered, with the help of laboratory experiments with mice, that too great an inhibition of serotonin release in the brain plays a major role in aggressive behaviour.

Permit offal to be put into animal feed again September 15, 2009 Worldwide, many environmental problems are attributed to the production of meat, milk and eggs. But how much of a burden is this production in actual fact? And what can we do to reduce this? Emiel Elferink has discovered that a good start would be to permit offal to be included again in animal feed production.
Groningen University Fund awards for best students September 01, 2009 During the opening ceremony of the academic year nine students were awarded the Groningen University Fund Education Prize. The students – one from each faculty – were awarded prizes, consisting of EUR 2500. Wouter Lueks (two Master’s degree programmes in Mathematics and in Computing Science) was the best student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Coral species on Great Barrier Reef adapting to climate change August 25, 2009 The coral species Acropora millepora is able to adapt to a warmer climate. This has been revealed by research conducted by biologist Jos Mieog. There’s a limit to its adaptability, however. If the earth continues to warm up at the rate its going, parts of the Great Barrier Reef, one of the most impressive natural areas in the world, may change into slimy algal goo.

Clever scrub jay doesn’t permit eavesdropping September 14, 2009 Waste not, want not. This certainly applies to the Western scrub jay, a songbird that likes to store its worms or nuts in the ground for later. Although there are always competitors in the offing, it’s not easy to rob a scrub jay. With the help of clever tricks, it tries to lead its competitors up the garden path. It does this not only if another bird is watching, but also if the other bird can only hear it. This has been discovered by PhD student Gert Stulp.
