ABSTRACT The Adventures of Tom Sawyer tells about a story of a ten year old boy named Tom Sawyer. Tom is an orphan with a deep interest on adventures .so, instead of doing house chores or homeworks at home, Tom prefers to roam his village, St. Petersburgh, with his naughty friends and ends up revealing a murder case, and most important of all, finding a buried treasure. The writer chooses this novel because it tells about childhood adventures. The writer loves the story because it is filled with sunny times, games of pirates and robbers, wonderful places to roam like forests, caves, and rivers. This researh aims to show the readers how a child like Tom acts, thinks, and searchs his self esteem because he is a unique character who is very different from the rest of the boys in his village. Two methods will be used to analyze Tom Sawyer's character. The first is analyzing Tom Sawyer's behavior within the perspective of Abraham Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs in order to reveal Tom's Uniqueness in fulfilling his needs. The Hierarchy of Needs consists of physiological needs, safety needs, belonging needs, esteem needs and self-actualization needs. The second method is using Sigmund Freud's theory on three structures of human psyche toanalyze how Tom behaves toward his family and his environment. The three structure of human psyche consists of Id, Ego, and Superego. Some results can be found in this thesis. Firstly is that Tom is unique individual in the way that he fulfills his needs in his own unique ways.Tom steals to eat and he also needs shelter that mostly takes place beneath shades of tree or cave-not in his aunt's comfortable house. Tom is a self esteem person who is capable of solving problems.Secondly, Tom's behavior toward his family and his environment is often dominated by his Id-his pleasure principle, therefore Tom appears to be one of the “bad” boys of St. Petersburgh. Eventhough Id-dominated, little Tom still sometimes has to act in accordance to his Ego and Superego. Tom's Id can be seen on Tom's laziness in doing his house chores, Tom's ego appeared when he pursued the most beatiful girl to be his lover, and Tom's Superego rose when he had to stand in the court giving testimony about a murder case.

ABSTRAK Novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer menceritakan sebuah kisah seorang anak berumur sepuluh tahun bernama Tom Sawyer. Tom seorang yatim piatu yang menyukai petualangan. Alhasil, disamping mengerjakan tugas rumahnya, Tom lebih senang pergi bermain di desanya, St. Petersburgh, bersama dengan temantemannya yang nakal dan diakhiri dengan pengungkapan sebuah kasus pembunuhan, dan yang paling penting yaitu menemukan harta yang terpendam. Penulis memilih novel ini karena novel ini mengisahkan petualangan anak kecil. Penulis menyukai novel ini karena novel ini dipenuhi dengan hari-hari yang cerah, permainan bajak laut dan perampok serta tempat-tempat yang indah untuk di jelajahi seperti hutan, tanah dan sungai. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan pada pembaca bagaimana seorang anak sepertitom bertindak, berpikir, mencari jati dirinya dengan ciri khasnya yang tidak dimiliki oleh anak-anak yang lain di desanya. Dalam menganalisa karakter dari Tom Sawyer penulis menggunakan dua metode. Pertama, analisa tentang tingkah laku Tom Sawyer dari sudut pandang hierarki kebutuhan oleh Abraham Maslow yang bertujuan mengungkapkan keunikan Tom dalam memenuhi kebutuhannnya. Hierarki kebutuhan tersebut terdiri atas kebutuhan fisik, kebutuhan akan rasa aman, kebutuhan akan kasih sayang, kebutuhan akan status, dan kebutuhan untuk mengaktualisasikan diri. Kedua, analisa tentang tingkah laku Tom terhadap keluarga dan lingkungannya dari sudut pandang tiga struktur pemikiran manusia dari Sigmund Freud yang terdiri dari Id, Ego, dan Superego. Beberapa hasil dapat disimpulkan dari thesis ini. Pertama, Tom adalah individu yang unik dalam memenuhi kebutuhannnya. Tom mencuri makanan, dia juga berteduh di bawah pohon atau di dalam gua dan dia tidak tidur di dalam rumah bibinya yang jauh lebih nyaman.Tom adalh orang yang mencari jati dirinya dengan cara memecahkan masalahnya sendiri. Kedua, tingkah laku Tom yang didominasi oleh Id terhadap keluarga dan lingkungannya yang mencerminkan segi kenyamanannya, karena itu Tom muncul sebagai salah satu anak nakal di desanya. Meskipun Id Tom mendominasi tom juga menunjukkan Ego dan Superegonya. Id Tom tampak ketika dia malas mengerjakan tugas rumahnya. Ego Tom tmpak ketika dia mengejar perempuan cantik untuk dijadikan kekasihnya. Superego Tom tampak ketika dia harus bersaksi di pengadilan memberikan kesaksian tentang kasus pembunuhan.
