AND NOW, IT’S TIME TO PRACTISE YOUR ENGLISH!
Little Jim: "How did you get that bruise on your arm?" Little Sam: "I ate some Easter candy." Little Jim: "Eating Easter candy won't give you a bruise." Little Sam: "It will if it's your big brother's candy!"
The Tale of Easter Island About 2,000 miles from the nearest continent, and 1,400 miles from the next closest inhabited island, lies a small piece of land only 65 square miles in size. It is the most isolated, inhabited place in the world, Easter Island. When the explorer Jacob Roggeveen found it on April 5, 1722 (Easter day, that’s why the name), the people, about 2,000, had no idea that other people, beside themselves, existed. This is not surprising because the islanders had no boats or canoes to cross the sea. Roggevenn found 200 amazing stone statues that stood on the coast. Some were as high as 33 feet and weighed 82 tons. There were another 700 statues left in stone mines or along roads, some 65 feet tall and weighing 270 tons. Roggevenn was surprised because Easter Island was an empty island with no trees to transport the statues or plants for making heavy ropes. How did people make and set up these giants without the basic materials and tools? When the first Polynesians arrived in Easter Island, around 400 to 700 A.D., what they found was a tropical paradise. Green forests of palm trees covered the hills. Other plants including the hauhau tree, which can be used to make ropes, were also numerous. Seabirds, including the albatross, lived in the island and dolphins played in the waves. With these good conditions the population of Easter Island quickly grew. The islanders soon had enough time to start building the huge statues that cover the island. These were probably set up by rival clans as a sign of status and wealth. The Islanders started cutting down the palm trees to make rollers to move the statues and the hauhau trees to make the ropes to pull and set up the monuments. When the last palm was cut down there was no wood to make the heavy canoes needed for long sea trips or to hunt the dolphins that were an important part of the Islanders diet. People started to starve, the government collapsed and cannibalism appeared. When Roggeveen arrived there were no living animals on Easter Island except the humans and a few chickens. And cold, stone statues stood on the empty land, the strange proof that a great civilization existed on the island.

GRAMMAR BITS This and that, here and there – ez meg az, itt meg ott
Bármilyen viccesnek is tőnik a cím, most pont ezekrıl a szavakról (és közeli rokonaikról) lesz szó.
this/these – ez/ezek A „this” (ez) és a „these” (ezek) szavak mutató névmások és egyaránt használható élılényekre és tárgyakra, amelyek közel vannak hozzánk akár térben, akár idıben: This is my friend, Laura. / Hi, Laura. Nice to meet you. Ez a barátom, Laura. / Szia Laura. Örülök, hogy találkoztunk.
Are these the photos you wanted? Ezek azok a fényképek, amelyeket akartál? Please listen carefully. This is what I want you to do. Hallgass rám figyelmesen. Ezt akarom, hogy tedd. Do you like this tee-shirt? I bought it in Monsoon. Tetszik neked ez a póló? A Monsoon boltban vettem. These oranges are really sweet. Would you like one? Ezek a narancsok igazán édesek. Szeretnél egyet? I’ve been living in this country for three years now. Három éve lakom ebben az országban.
that/those – az/azok A „that” (az) és a „those” (azok) szavak ugyancsak mutató névmások és egyaránt használhatóak élılényekre vagy tárgyakra, amelyek távol vannak tılünk, nemcsak térben, hanem idıben is (a múltban történtek): That was a really nice dinner, thank you very much. Remek vacsora volt, nagyon köszönöm. Who gave you those? Don’t eat them they’re not fresh. Ki adta neked azokat? Ne edd meg, nem frissek. Who was that you were talking to? Ki volt az, akivel beszélgettél? Did you hear now from those Irish girls that we met in Dublin? Hallottál azokról az ír lányokról, akikkel Dublinban találkoztunk? What was that noise? Didn’t you hear anything? Mi volt az a zaj? Te nem hallottál semmit? Can you see that red telephone box over there? That’s where you catch the bus. Látod azt a piros telefonfülkét ott? Ott tudsz felszállni a buszra.
this/that a közelmúltban és közeljövıben Vannak bizonyos helyzetek, például amikor barátokat vársz és csengetnek, vagy amikor fizetsz a boltban az árukért, ahol a „that” szót kell használnod, holott a közeli idıre (közelmúltra vagy közeljövıre) utalsz: That’ll be Tom and Jane. Can you open the door for them, Jimmy? Ez Tom és Jane lesz. Kinyitnád nekik az ajtót, Jimmy?
Is that all? / Yes, that’s all. / That’ll be five euros eighty, please. Ez minden? / Igen. / 5 euro 80 lesz. A pint of bitter and a packet of salted peanuts. / That’ll be £1.97 please. Egy pohár sört és egy zacskó sós mogyorót kérek. / 1 font 97 lesz.
A már ismert kifejezések, mint a „this morning”, „this afternoon”, „this summer”, „this winter” stb. vonatkozhatnak múltra és jövıre egyaránt: What are you doing this evening? Do you have any plans? Mit csinálsz ma este? Van valami terved? What did you do this morning? / Nothing much. Got up late and read the paper. Mit csináltál ma reggel? / Nem sokat. Késın keltem és elolvastam az újságot. We’re going to try to keep fit this winter by going to the gym twice a week. Ezen a télen megpróbálunk fittek maradni és hetente kétszer fogunk edzıterembe járni. I had a wonderful holiday this summer. Three weeks of complete rest. Idén nyáron csodálatos volt a nyaralásom. Három hét teljes pihenés.
here/there – itt/ott A „here” (itt) és a „there” (ott) között hasonló különbség van, mint az elıbb tárgyalt „this – that” között. A „here” szó a beszélıhöz közeli helyre utal, míg a „there” egy távolabbi helyre vonatkozik. A „there” szót az angol gyakran használja abban az értelemben, hogy „máshol”. Nézd meg, miként alkalmazzák mondjuk egy telefonbeszélgetés során vagy egy képeslapon: Is Jenny there? / No, she’s not here at the moment. Can I take a message? Ott van Jenny? / Nem, pillanatnyilag nincs itt. Átvehetek valami üzenetet? This island is so beautiful. You should be here with me and not over there in that cold England. Ez a sziget olyan gyönyörő. Itt kellene lenned velem és nem ott abban a hideg Angliában.
