Semana Sancta Tradition in Larantuka S
ince long time ago, Larantuka is known as Reinha city, the city of Holy Maria. On April 2012, for a week, Larantuka was overwhelmed by visitors from all over Indonesia. Hotels and inns have been booked a couple months before, streets are very crowded. They were coming for praising Tuan Ma (Maria) and Tuan Ana (Jesus Christ). Larantuka a month before Easter Day was covered with religious Catholics atmosphere. Larantuka is capital of East Flores regency and many people come to this place for studying religion. Tradition to visit Larantuka during Easter is related to the Ash Wednesday. It is the first day for Catholics all over the world to start fasting day. Semana Sancta (semana = a week, sancta = holy) is series of religious ritual in Larantuka in relation with Easter Day. This tradition is always done after Portuguese left this place. In Catholics tradition, this tradition is called the Holy Week. During this week, all Catholics in Larantuka will be together in praying and singing for welcoming Easter. Starting on the Ash Wednesday, Catholics people in Larantuka will crowd two chapels, Tuan Ma Chapel in Kebis Beach of Larantuka regency and Tuan Ana Chapel in Lohayong district. The uniqueness in this tradition lies in the procession and people involved in preparing the ceremony in these two chapels. Those people are selected from several tribes in Larantuka and they are never been changed since firstly chosen to fill this position. They are on duty for about six weeks and it starts on the first week before pre Easter Day started. The first week is the opening week, which is celebrated by all people of Larantuka village. The clan that is in charge on Friday is Kebelen Clan and Kabu-Laveri Clan on Saturday. The activities on the second week will be coordinated by the family of King of Larantuka, descendant of Diaz Viera de Godinho. King Diaz Viera de Godinho will be on duty on Friday and Diaz Alindu Clan on Saturday. On the third week, in Lewonama village (Lohayong), Ama Kelen Clan (Blanterang de Rosari Family) is in charge on Friday and Amamaran Clan on Saturday. On the fourth week, Sau and Mestri Clan in Pohon Sirih village are in charge on Friday and Sau Diaz Pohon Asam Clan on Saturday. Ama Kelen and Ama Hurint (Lamuri) Clan from Balela village are responsible on Friday and Saturday of week five. The last week or week six is time for Mulawato and Lawerang Clan from Pantai Besar village to be responsible in preparation in chapel. Those clans who are known as Samana Sancta Clans are closely known by the King of Larantuka. They have been involved in this religious tradition since Portuguese coming to Larantuka in 16th century. Portuguese encouraged people to repent and purify themselves during fasting day. Why Catholics in Larantuka are still doing the complete religious ritual inherited from Portuguese? Portuguese firstly came from Solor and Timor Island for spices trading and then they built fort in Lohayong of East Solor. Dutch attacked this fort in 1613 and Portuguese moved to Larantuka. They came back to Lohayong soon after situation quite secure. Unfortunately, Dutch attacked this fort again in 1645 and occupied it. This situation
had forced Portuguese moved and then finally settled in Larantuka, which was considered to be a safe place to stay. At that time, religious leaders of Portuguese baptized King of Larantuka and his family based on Catholics belief. Since that time, there is a slogan in Larantuka, King of Government, King of Tradition and King of Religion. At that time, in Larantuka Palace, the king acted as the traditional and religious leader, as well as leader of the kingdom. The clans were formed in relation to the Semana Sancta ceremony. The King usually invited those clans to the palace when he had important things to discuss. This tradition has been continued until now. Wednesday during Holy Week in Larantuka differs from the other places. It is known here as trewa Wednesday and also the last day or the closing of Semana Sancta when Kapitan Jentera of Larantuka Village becomes the coordinator for this event. Semana Sancta prayer is delivered by mama muji (female choir who sing in Portuguese). In the morning, the clans that have been assigned for certain duty hold a praying in Maria Chapel. Lamentasi (the lamentation of Yeremia) is held in the afternoon in Reinha Rosari Cathedral in Larantuka). Everything is based on tradition of Catholic Church. Before, people created noisy sound during lamentation of trewa Wednesday by hitting drums or house walls and yelled “trewa-trewa-trewa”. It was meant to get rid the evil spirit. They also threw stones to the boats along the seashore. Nowadays, they have left this ritual and celebrate the lamentation in quiet atmosphere. People concentrate to pray and purify their body and soul. People prepare materials for tikam turo (tikam = stab and turo= candle). Public streets in Larantuka that are included in routes for Good Friday Procession are also being cleaned and prepared. Next, on Maundy Thursday, Larantuka in the afternoon is very quiet. Many posts are put along the route of Good Friday Procession on both lest and right sides of the streets. Those posts are used to put the candles that have been prepared by the official on duty called mardomu (mayor domos) in accordance to their promesa (promise). People of Larantuka also hold the ceremony of Muda Tuan or the opening of a container that has been closed for one year by confrere officials who are appointed under a vow. After that the statue of Mater Dolorosa is cleaned and decorated. Then it is time for people to kneel down and convey their wishes such as wish for god’s blessing. People are in faith that Virgin Mary will deliver their prayer and wishes to Jesus Christ (Per Mariam ad Yesum). The door of Tuan Ma Chapel and Tuan Ana Chapel will be opened on Thursday evening by the King, descendant of Diaz Viera de Godinho. Just like universal Catholic tradition, on Maundy Thursday evening, there will be the Eucharist of 12 messengers and general adoration, in turn praying in front of Holy Sacrament, kissing Tuan Ma in Tuan Ma Chapel and Tuan Ana in Tuan Ana Chapel. Four people have been prepared to do promesa lakademu from Cathedral of Reinha Rosari until Tuan Ana Chapel during evening procession of Good Friday. The member of lakademu will control and check the route and readiness of the pit stop. They will walk holding hands along
the procession route and stop in every pit stop to check the security. After everything is settled down. People will ready to follow the procession of Good Friday. Portuguese carried out this tradition at the end of 16th century. They also believed in the principle of cuius regio, eius religio (those who took control a certain area will determine the religion for people in that area). Portuguese people were mostly Catholics; therefore they also want to make people of Larantuka and its surroundings to hold the same religion as them. There was a lot of rebellion, disasters and tragedies occurred in 1599, therefore Good Friday Procession at this time was celebrated in a very quiet and sacred atmosphere. Based on the Old Testament, this horrible situation was interpreted to be punishment from God. Successfully went through that condition, people regarded it as God’s blessing, therefore at the beginning, the procession was held in tranquil atmosphere in order to show people’s regret and thanks to God for all His blessings. Today, Good Friday procession is established as a symbol of moral recovery and people of Larantuka call it ‘Sesta Pera’. Good Friday procession is actually the marching of people to accompany Jesus Christ after the crucifixion. The main point is that Jesus Christ was crossed and died and Holy Maria is the mourning mother (Mater Dolorosa) who lost her son. During the procession, people will march around the town of Larantuka and stop in 8 armida or stop point (represents 8 clans who involved in the preparation of this procession). The first armida belongs to Mulawato Clan (Pantai Besar) and located in Lohayong and Pohon Sirih districts. The second armida is owned by people from Kota in Sarotari district who have Amu Tuan Meninu (Master of Baby) as their protector. The third armida can be found in St. Philipus Balela Chapel and Balela people are responsible for this under the coordination of Amakelen and Ama Hurint Balela Clan. The fourth armida is in Larantuka with Amu Tuan Trewa (the shackled master) as its protector. People of Larantuka are responsible for the fourth armida under the coordination of Kepitan Jentera Clan. The fifth armida is located in front of Tuan Ma Chapel and under the responsibility of Pante Kebis and Batumea people with and coordination of Riberu da Gomes/Fernandez da Gomes Clan. The sixth armida is in Benteng Daud/Pohon Sirih Chapel with St. Antonius from Padua as its protector. This armida is taken care by people from Pohon Sirih, under the coordination of Sau/Diaz Pohon Sirih Clan. The seventh armida is located in Armida Kuce in front of King Larantuka Palace, under the coordination of the family of King Diaz Viera de Godinho. The last armida can be found in Tuan Ana Chapel and it is the responsibility of Lohayong and Lokea people, under the coordination of Amakelen Lewonama Clan. From the eight armida, the procession will go back to Cathedral as the end and also center of Good Friday procession. Here, Jesus was released from the cross and put on the lap of Holy Maria. This is the end of Jesus’ misery in which all people escort Jesus entering Reinha Rosari Larantuka church. All Catholic followers should enter the church to celebrate the glory of Jesus.(*) ....to be continued... O vos omnes....page 16

Improving the Image of Indonesian Coffee through Miss Coffee Indonesia Contest
I
ndonesia through the Association of Indonesian Ambassadors (ADI) in collaboration with various institutions will hold the first Miss Coffee Indonesia contest. Indonesia is the third largest coffee producer in the world and this event is aimed to promote Indonesian coffee products around the world. The Grand Final of Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012 will be held on June 6, 2012. The competition was also held to strengthen the declaration of agro-tourism in Indonesia. “The selection process is carried out from February to May 2012. Thirty provinces will take part in the contest, with each sending two contestants, who will be the ambassadors of the respecting province. These selected contestants will follow the quarantine and attend the Grand Final of Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012 on June 6,” said Kuntari Sapta Nirwandar as Chairperson of Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012 during a press conference in Excelso, Grand Indonesia Jakarta recently. “The winner of Miss Coffee Indonesia will promote Indonesian coffee products to the international arena in order to improve the coffee trade, agro-tourism, and improve the welfare of the people, especially farmers,” said Kuntari. Winner of Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012, she said, will be competing
in the Miss Coffee International, that will be held in October in Bali. This event will be attended by 26 countries. Competing in the international stage, representatives of Indonesia should have qualified knowledge about the coffee products, production process, variety of coffee, and everything about Indonesian coffee. Lanny Rahadi, Public Relations of ADI added, “We’re planning to make Indonesia as the center of the world’s coffee, so when talking about, people will no longer refer to Brazil, but Indonesia. That’s the big aim of this activity,” she said. According to Lanny, Indonesia needs a figure who is able to speak in the world stage regarding the potential of coffee from Indonesia. That way, the consumption of Indonesian coffee at the national and international level can be increased. It is expected that in the next five to fifteen years Indonesia will be the world’s first coffee producer. “This contest is not just for the sake of Indonesia, but also international interest, because coffee has become an international lifestyle,” she continued. Knowledge briefing for the contestants will not stop at the quarantine Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012 because after attending Miss Coffee International, the contestants will get further knowledge about coffee by visiting the world’s largest coffee producers such as Columbia and Brazil.
Indonesia is the third largest coffee producer in the world, of course, quite a lot of coffee plantations can be found here. However, only small number of the coffee plantations in Indonesia is utilized as a destination for agro-tourism. “We are promoting not only the coffee, but also Indonesia as a whole. We can promote ecotourism such as a coffee plantation at Mount Ijen,” said Kuntari Sapta Nirwandar. She further said that at Mount Ijen, there are coffee plantations that overlooking the sea and as well as the mountain. Both, continued Kuntari, has a different aroma and flavor. “Indonesia is the third largest coffee producer in the world. Coffee producers in Indonesia are spreading from Aceh Gayo, then Mandailing. In Java there are Pengalengan and Bondowoso. Coffee from Bali, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), Toraja and Papua all have different taste and aroma, “Kuntari explained. Even so, said Kuntari, Indonesia coffee has spread around the world. Thus, with coffee, Indonesia can be promoted as a tourism destination. She added that in the countries where people are known as a connoisseur of coffee such as Italy, France, and Japan do not have the coffee plantation, but become the biggest consumer of coffee. “Indonesia has coffee with different flavors. With the taste of coffee that is very unique. We can export our products to the coffee consumer countries,” she said. Therefore, Kuntari said that she feels the need to promote Indonesia’s coffee and one of the attempts is through organizing Miss Coffee Indonesia 2012. The winners will be the Indonesian Coffee Ambassador, whose responsibilities are to promote as well as to provide information about the Indonesian coffee. Meanwhile, Pranoto Soenarto from the Association of Indonesian Coffee Exporters and Industry mentioned that only small number of coffee plantations Indonesia that is developed into agro-tourism. “Coffee plantations that have been developed into agro-tourism include PTP 12 in Jember (East Java), PTP 9 in Central Java, Sulotco in Toraja, and in Banyuwangi,” he said. Pranoto said that Brazil becomes the world’s largest coffee producer, while Vietnam comes in second place. “Brazil, in around 1800’s brought coffee seedlings from Indonesia. Now it is number one in the world. Vietnam comes second and also learned about coffee plantation from Indonesia in the beginning. Thirdly it was Colombia, but because it had failed to harvest, so we are number three,” he explained. Unfortunately, continued Pranoto, some of Indonesia’s coffees such as Toraja and Gayo have been patented by a foreign country. Toraja coffee has been patented by Japan. Thus, it is difficult for Indonesia to be able to sell the Toraja coffee brand overseas. In addition, Indonesian people are known as the coffee drinkers. However, added Pranoto, the Indonesian coffee consumption is still low. “Our coffee consumption index is 0.9 per kilogram per capita, Scandinavia is 11.8 and Japan is 3.8,” he concluded. (*)

entral Java Province has prepared a budget of Rp 9.3 billion for Central Java V i s i t Ye a r 2 0 1 3 c a m p a i g n . T h e
promotional budget is used for the installation of billboards, advertising on television, printed media, radio, and others.
Head of Central Java Tourism Office, Prasetyo Aribowo said Central Java, for example, will install two billboards at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Jakarta at a cost of Rp 1.4 billion as well as at Ngurah Rai Airport, Denpasar, Bali with a budget of Rp 400 million. “We will also put up billboards on the borders of Central Java, such as in the border of Tuban, Bojonegoro, Brebes, and so forth. Other promotions are through advertising campaigns on television, radio, and printed media. Moreover, the campaign is also established through taxi-branding in many parts of Central Java, “he said. Tourism promotion is very expensive, for example, one advertising spot on television with a duration of 30 seconds worth Rp15 million. “Since the promotion budget is still limited, the 2012 Budget Amendment of Central Java Tourism Office will request additional promotional budget of about Rp 5 billion. This budget will be concentrated to promote through advertising on television. During the implementation of the Visit Central Java 2013, Central Java is targeting 25 million domestic tourist visit and 500,000 foreign tourist visits, “he said. He added that for the implementation of the Visit Central Java 2013, four events have been prepared, which include the Borobudur International Festival. The Tourism Office also encourages holding meetings or convention in Central Java, more sport events and music performance. (*)

he local committee of Sail Morotai will charter a number of big ships served as floating hotels for participants’ accommodation in the District of Morotai Island, North Maluku, due to limited accommodation facilities available in the area. The chairman of the event`s local committee, Muhadjir Albar said in Ternate that the hotel in Morotai is very limited, so to meet the accommodation needs of the participants of Sail Morotai, the committee will charter a number of big ships to be used as a sort of floating hotel. The same thing has been done by the committee of Sail Belitung 2011 to overcome the limitations of the accommodation facilities for the guests and participants. According to Muhajir, the Sail Morotai local committee would also encourage local people
to allow their houses be used as home-stay accommodations for the event`s participants and guests. But he added the bedrooms and bathrooms of the houses that would be used as home-stay accommodations must be renovated first with funds from the regional and state budgets. “Morotai has just recently been expanded into regency, so I’m sure the guests and participants of Sail Morotai could understand the lack of infrastructure, particularly in terms of accommodation,” he said. He further said that to overcome the shortage of venues for the implementation of various activities on Morotai Sail on 8 September 2012, the committee will hire a huge tent from a number of companies in Java. Meanwhile, chairman of the North Maluku
branch of the Indonesian Hotels and Restaurants Association (PHRI) Christoper Harlin said the use of big ships and people`s houses to accommodate Sail Morotai guests and participants was an appropriate measure to overcome the shortage of lodging facilities in Morotai. Christoper said he believed foreigners would prefer staying at local people`s houses rather than in hotels during Sail Morotai 2012 because they would like to enjoy the natural atmosphere and interaction with the house owners. However, the local committee Sail Morotai should pay serious concern on the provision of restaurant, because foreigners are very selective in choosing food, including the matter of cleanliness, both in presentation and selection of food. Traditional houses with Modern Touch in Tourism Village
omy, Mari Elka Pangestu recently said that Lombok and Bali for example, the tourism village program in those areas focuses on restoring the village as a traditional village. However, it is designed comfortably so that tourists will feel comfortable while staying there.
“Tourists who come can see the making of handicrafts in the village and can buy it on the spot. In the future, he added, tourists are expected to stay in the tourism village with the concept of homestay, which is run by local people, “she said. As in the tourism villages around Borobudur and Yogyakarta, guests can stay in villagers’ houses. Not only foreign tourists, domestic tourists also enjoy their stay there. It is expected that through the homestay concept, tourists will better understand the traditions and culture in every village and in the same time bring better life to the local community. “The tourism village is the attempt to develop and maintain the traditions of the local village.”For example, a house in the village isn’t constructed like modern houses with concrete and ceramics. It is constructed like traditional house, which existence should be maintained, “said Mari. However, although we attempt to maintain the traditional aspect, modern touch should also be available in the house such a power and water supplies. Meanwhile, Director of Community Empowerment Kemenparekraf, Bakri said there will be a joint program of the rural tourism development with the ASEAN countries, especially between Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines. President Director of the Pacific Royale Samudra Sukardi said that the airline will start flying in March 2012. It is currently in stage four that consists of live demos of evacuation and roving flight. It is scheduled to be completed by next month. “Pacific Royale focuses on full service flight and has invested the budget of US$ 60 million as an initial stage. The details, as much as US$ 40 million is allocated for procurement of 10 aircraft and US$ 20 million for the purchase of aviation fuel and operational funding, “he said He further said that the airline will bring four aircrafts in February-April 2012, which consists of two Fokker F-50 and Airbus A320-200. From the 81 route permit has been obtained, about 30% of which is the international routes and the remaining 70% is the domestic routes. The international flight will use Airbus A320 and later will be replaced by Airbus A330 that is scheduled to arrive at the end of 2012. “While the Fokker F-50 are used to serve domestic routes, primarily as a feeder. We have three hubs, namely Jakarta, Surabaya and Batam. But for the international routes we will not depart from Jakarta because it is crowded enough. Instead, we will depart from Surabaya and Batam such as the route of Surabaya-Singapore and Surabaya-Hong Kong, and then later proceed to India. We will also serve Bandung-Kuala Lumpur, “he said. He added that for the domestic routes later the airline will have the routes of Jakarta-Surabaya, SurabayaBanyuwangi, Surabaya-Madiun, Batam- Natuna, and Batam-Kerinci. Looking ahead, Pacific Royale is also eager to open flights to China because the market is very promising. Pacific Royale will not take the routes served by Garuda Indonesia as its competitors in a full class service. “We will take the routes that are not much visited by Garuda Indonesia. We try to open up new markets for the full class service. This class portion is still small compared to the low cost carrier (LCC), so we chose this class. If we take LCC as well it means that we are desperate because too many airlines have taken this class, “he said. The Flight Budiness License (SIUP) granted to Pacific Royale on 1 November 2011 No. SIUAU/NB-025. It is targeted that in the first year, Pacific Royale will operate 10 aircraft. The premier flight is planned to use four aircraft to fly, two units of Fokker 50 and two units of A 320. (*)

inistry of Transportation continues to explore the provision of a superfast train service that will serve the route from Jakarta to Surabaya. The project is expected to spend huge amount of budget. Deputy Minister of Transportation Bam-
bang Susantono said that the budget was very large. This is the point that is taken into serious consideration. The budget required could reach Rp150 trillion to Rp180 trillion. “The train is planned to operate the route of Jakarta-Surabaya and serve nine stations. With a super-fast train just like Shinkansen in Japan, travel time from Jakarta to Surabaya, which reaches 665 kilometers can be reached in just three hours, “he said. It is said that super-fast train project requires the preparation of up to five years. Currently, the Ministry of Transportation has done preliminary studies and is conducting an assessment with the investors. According to him, there are two investors who are interested in this project, namely from Japan and China. However, the government will contin-
ue to contribute to funding the project. Meanwhile, President Director of PT KAI Ignatius Jonan said that PT KAI is also thinking about the future of the national transportation that currently has reached a saturation point due to the mobility of the population and the increasingly massive urban economy can no longer be charged on the road network, both in urban and intercity. According to him, the role of train should be able to take over most of the mobility of the city, either by building a rail network system in the city or between cities in an integrated way, with the city landscape and other transport modes. “The train is the solution of future passenger and goods transportation in Indonesia,” he said. Colorful Cap Go Meh in Singkawang S
ingkawang is often referred to as a city of a thousand pagodas. The town that is located in West Kalimantan has close ties with China, both in terms of history and culture and community life. In the land that covers the area of 50,000 ha, Singkawang has the total population of more than 190,000 people, with half of them are Chinese ethnic. There are at least 600 pagodas in Singkawang. It is said that in the 18th century, the town was a transit point for gold miners who came from China. A wave of mass migration in 1760 had brought Hakka ethnic from Guangdong (South China) to the island of Borneo. This transit point is often referred to as the “San Kew Jong” which pronunciation is gradually changed into Singkawang. These mine workers assumed that geographically Singkawang is directly adjacent to the Natuna Sea and there are mountains and rivers, where water flows from the mountains through the rivers into the estuary towards the sea. Seeing the development of Singkawang, which was considered to be quite promising, most miners were then switching professions to farmers or merchants. Many of them decided to settle in Singkawang. Although physically and culturally the Hakka ethnic has assimilated with the local people, they still maintain their ancestral traditions until now. Most of them are Confucian and Buddhist, thus the Chinese New Year celebration will be a special tradition that will always be celebrated. During the celebration of Chinese New Year and Cap Gomeh, Singkawang which is also rich in natural tourism potential has become the most crowded city that celebrates it. Many attractive activities are carried out ranging from lion dance performances, Tatung parades, dragon boat, dance performances and so on. No wonder, the atmosphere of Chinese New Year in this small town always succeeds in attracting tourists from all over the world. Chinese New Year celebration in Singkawang is always celebrated for 15 consecutive days and the fifteenth day is called the Cap Go Meh. In Chinese tradition Cap Go Meh means the fifteenth night, which is the main celebration of the Chinese New Year. Cap Go Meh in Indonesia itself is a blend of Chinese and Indonesian culture. It can be seen from the menu lontong (rice cake) Cap Go Meh that is often served during the celebration. Rice cake is a native to Indonesia, while Cap Go Meh is a tradition born from the Lunar New Year. Cap Go Meh celebration in Singkawang is a tremendous attraction for tourists from outside the region. For several days, Singkawang is crowded by tourists. Cap Go Meh celebration begins with the Tatung procession of the cultural communities. Tatung is a person who is possessed by a spirit that has immunity and does not feel pain when sitting or standing on a sword or stabbed with long iron stick. Tatung procession is accompanied by dozens of accompaniment from each community. Before the celebration of Cap Go Meh, Singkawang is crowded by tourists because the committee also held a variety of events. To add excitement, other attractions are also held such as Singkawang batik fashion show, fireworks, and karaoke competitions at ASEAN level.(*)
E
xploring the island of Sumba Sumba is like traveling on the Land of the Spirits. In every corner of the town and the villages we can find offerings and hear the praise of the servants. The name Sumba was taken from the name of a role mother model Rambu Humba, the wife of Umbu Mandoku, one of the figures who laid the foundation for kabisu-kabisu (sub-clan) in Sumba. Two-thirds of the population is adherents of a solemn devotion to the spirits of their ancestors, in particularly to the father of all tribes. Marapu is following the instructions and the calculation of the Rato (tribe leader and high priest of the Merapu). Megalithic tombs and sacred stones that decorate the heart of every village and hamlet (paraingu) are the evidences of the existence of animism. Sumba is an island that offers not only beautiful nature panorama, but also unique and interesting culture and attractions such as Pasola and Nyale. Pasola derived from the word ‘sola’ or ‘hola’, which means a type of wooden javelin thrown from horses ridden by two opposing groups. After obtaining affixes `pa ‘(pa-sola, pa-hola), it means a game. Pasola takes place in West Sumba once a year in February in Kodi and Lamboya, and in Wanokaka in March. Pasola is carried out in vast field and witnessed by all members of Kabisu and Paraingu from the two competing groups and by public. The participants are selected males from both Kabisu who must master two skills of riding super speed power horse and throwing the javelin (hola). Pasola is usually the climax of the whole series of activities of Nyale. Tracing its origins, Pasola came from the scandal of beautiful widow, Rabu Kaba as narrated in the tale of Waiwuang. Once upon a time there were three brothers: Ngongo Tau Masusu, Yagi Waikareri and Umbu Dula who told the Waiwuang villagers that they wanted to go to the sea. But in fact they went to the southern coast of East Sumba to get rice. After quite a long time and the searching of them showed no result, the villagers believed that the three brothers had died. They also held mourning upon the departure / death of their leaders. In the deep grief, the beautiful widow of the late Umbu Dulla, Rabu Kaba met Teda Gaiparona from the village of Kodi. They were in love and promised to be a lover. However, the custom did not want their marriage and the couple decided to elope. The beautiful widow, Rabu Kaba was taken by Teda Gaiparona to his hometown. Some time later, the three leaders of Waiwuang (Ngongo Tau Masusu, Yagi Waikareri and Umbu Dula), who previously had been declared missing or dead by their followers suddenly appeared back in their hometown. Waiwuang villagers welcomed them with great joy. But cloudy grief could not be avoided when Umbu Dulla asked about his wife. “The noble Queen has been taken to the village of Teda Gaiparona in the village of Kodi,” said Waiwulang villagers. Then all villagers deployed to search
for the couple. Finally, both found at the foot of Mount Bodu Hula. Although the villagers of Waiwuang had found them, but Rabu Kaba had fallen in love with Teda Gaiparona and did not want to come back to her husband. Later Rabu Kaba asked Teda Gaiparona to replace the belis (dowry) received from Umbu Dulla’s family. Teda Gaiparona had agreed to pay the belis. After all the belis was paid, wedding ceremony was held between Rabu Kaba and Teda Gaiparona. At the end of the wedding, Teda Gaiparona asked the villagers of Waiwuang to hold the feast of Nyale in the form of Pasola to forget their grief of losing a beautiful widow, Rabu Kaba. Based on this legend, every year villagers of Waiwua ng, Kodi and Wanokaka in West Sumba carry out the ritual of Nyale and Pasola. Pasola roots, which are embedded deep in the culture of West Sumba people has made it not only a form of celebration and entertainment, but also part of people’s daily life. It becomes a form of people’s devotion and obedience to their ancestors. Pasola is the command of the ancestors for Marapu’s followers. Therefore Pasola in the first place is the heart of the religious cult that reveals the religious essence of Marapu. It can be seen clearly on the implementation of Pasola. Pasola begins with semadhi (meditation) prayer and Lakutapa (fasting) of the Rato, futurologist and religious leaders from every kabisu involved in Pasola. Meanwhile, a month before D-day implementation of Pasola, it has been announced that the blood spilled during Pasola will fertilize the soil and succeed the harvest. If someone is died during the game of Pasola, it is then seen as evidence of violation towards the norms of customary law, including the month of purification before Pasola. In the second place, Pasola is a form of solving the tribal crisis through `bellum pacifism’ or peace war. Rabu Kaba who eloped from Waiwuang family to Kodi family and her change of status from the wife of Umbu Dulla to Teda Gaiparona’s wife was definitely not a happy story. It was a painful life episode and had humiliated Umbu Dulla’s family. Waiwuang family was furious and ready to take revenge to Kodi’s family, especially to Teda Gaiparona. Kodi family was aware of the disaster. Then they look for a way out to this problem by making a Nyale ceremony, which is directly related to the core of worship of ancestral spirits to invoke blessing for fertility and a successful harvest, as a joint celebration to forget the sadness of being left by Rabu Kaba. In third place, Pasola becomes the media that strengthen the brotherhood between the two groups that participated in Pasola and the public. During Pasola, all participants, support groups and spectators are invited to laugh together, rejoice together and cheering together while watching the agility of the participants. Pasola has become the event to establish and strengthen friendship and brotherhood. (*)

Chairman of ATF Local Committee, Secretary of North Sulawesi province, Siswa Rahmat Mokodongan explained that the ministers who attended the event included Minister of Tourism and the Creative Economy Mari Elka Pengestu, Singapore Minister of Trade and Industry Mr. S Irawan, India’s Tourism Minister Mr. Sobudh Kant Sahai, Cambodian Minister of Tourism Dr. Thong Khon, Malaysia’s Tourism Minister Dr. Ng Yen Yen, and Minister of Communication,
Manado as a MICE city
M
anado, the capital of North Sulawesi Province, since 2010 has been designated as one of 14 cities of MICE (Meeting, Incentive, Convention, Exhibition) by the government. Starting 2012, Manado held a large-scale MICE event by hosting the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2012 from 8 to 16 January 2012. “We promote in many places and not just Bali. Manado has the potential for the venue of MICE events, “said Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy (Menparekraf), Mari Elka Pangestu. Mari said the ATF TRAVEX which is a tourism exchange was also held and involving tourism industry from the ASEAN countries as the sellers. There were about 400 sellers from ASEAN countries and 500 buyers from various countries around the world. “So there are 1,000 people and this is the biggest number of participants in the history of TRAVEX,” she said. Meanwhile, the Head of Bureau of Tourism and the Creative Economy of North Sulawesi, Manado Haefrey Sendoh mentioned Manado’s readiness to become MICE city and it can be seen from the availability
of 2,600 rooms of three to five-star hotels. In addition, continued Haefrey, for the exhibition venue, Manado has Kawanua Grand Convention Centre which has an area of approximately 4,500 square meters that can accommodate about 500 booths. “We also have SMESCO for a small-scale event as well as Manado Convention Centre which was once the venue for the appropriate technology exhibition in 2008, “he explained. Several large-scale MICE events, said Haefrey, have been held in Manado such as the World Ocean Conference, CTI Summit, and Sail Bunaken 2009. In 2010, Manado hosted a meeting of the countries producing palm oil in Asia Pacific. “The World Ocean Conference is so far the biggest international event that has been held in Manado. It’s even bigger than ATF. The number of participating countries was greater. In 2010 Manado also hosted ASEAN Economic Ministers Meeting, “he said. Meanwhile, Governor of North Sulawesi, Sinyo Harry Sarundajang mentioned that in 2012 North Sulawesi is targeting 100,000
foreign tourist arrivals, while the target of domestic tourist visits in 2012 is 8 million people. “Currently, tourism sector contributed 15% of the local revenue,” he said. However, he was optimistic that there will be an increase in revenue from tourism sector contribution due to the opening of direct flight from outside Indonesia to Manado. So far, North Sulawesi, he added, is known as a maritime tourism with Bunaken as the icon. “We also have mountains, lakes, cultural and religious attractions, and culinary. Therefore we are quite confident to host the ATF 2012. We have been established as a MICE destination, “he said. ATF is a regional effort to promote ASEAN as a tourist destination. This annual event involves all sectors of the tourism industry of the 10 ASEAN member countries namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. In 2012, ATF was conducted in Indonesia and brought 1600 delegates from various countries.(*)
ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) Manado, a logistical Nightmare for the Delegates
D
elegates of ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2012 complained about flights, hotels, and transportation. A poll conducted among 16 buyers and sellers who attended the event in Manado revealed that this year’s edition was a logistical nightmare for the majority, although they were fairly positive about the business outcomes. Flight accessibility was cited repeatedly as the biggest complaint, with respondents pointing out that ample seat capacity into the destination should have been a main requirement of being a host city. Gilbert Whelan, President of the ATM Travel Marketing, said that he took 31.5 hours from San Francisco to Manado. After the conference, he had to wait for another two days due to limited and expensive flights. Christoph Mueller, Managing Director of Go Vacation Thailand, said that host committee should provide adequate flight accessibility
and international quality hotel in the city or tourist destination. Official bus transfers within Manado proved to be another excruciating experience, as buses were often late and overcrowded or were no-shows. Roman Davydov, director of Ukraine-based Advanced Executive, said frequent changes in venues should have been minimized, especially when proper and air-conditioned transfers were unavailable. “People come to the show to work and not to ride in the bus,” he said. The quality of hotels in Manado also became the target of complaint. Two buyers said the quality of accommodation did not correspond to the star-rating advertised, while one seller said hotels used the opportunity to jack up their prices, with delegates paying five times the usual room rates. Andrea Loddo from Hayes & Javis / Thomson tailormade from Eng-
land, said that he did not attend the afternoon and evening activities due to difficulty in obtaining transportation and the distance between the hotel and the location was quite far. He added that the place he was staying were two-star hotel with the dirty and noisy room. “It seems that this region (in Indonesia) isn’t ready for MICE tourism. Hotels, food, transfers and knowledge of an international language needs to be improved first,” said Karl Hellgren, managing director of Belgium-based Business Events Incentives. However, all the participants who were polled were satisfied with their business meeting and are confident of getting a positive result. “It is always good to meet all our resort partners in one place to exchange the latest news and develop new ideas,” said Germanybased Meier’s Weltreisen supervisor, product management team, Asia, Nicole Dieckmann.(*)

Getting to know Rendang, the most delicious food in the world
R
endang is a dish that originated from Minangkabau ethnic group of Indonesia and is now generally adopted throughout the country. It is one of the typical foods of Minangkabau culture, served on ceremonial occasions and for special guests. Rendang is also popular in Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, southern Philippines and southern Thailand. It is traditionally prepared by the Indonesian community during festive occasions. Although it is sometimes depicted as curry, and this name is sometimes applied to the meat curry dish in Malaysia, authentic rendang is not like curry at all. In 2011, an online poll by 35,000 people undertaken by CNN International chose Rendang as the number one food from the list of ‘50 World Most Delicious Food’. In addition to beef, the ingredients needed to cook rendang also incluce coconut (karambia), and a mixture of various spices of Indonesia such as Chili (Lado), galangal, lemongrass, onions and other spices that are usually referred to as pemasak (the cooker).
Rendang is made from beef (or sometimes beef liver, chicken, goat, buffalo, duck, or vegetables like jackfruit or cassava), which is cooked with coconut milk, spices and sometimes rustle (toasted coconut paste) for several hours until most of the fluid dried, allowing the meat to absorb the spicy condiments. A slow cooking process allows the meat to absorb all the spices and become soft. The spices may include ginger, galangal, turmeric leaf, lemon grass and chili. Chicken or duck rendang also contains tamarind and usually the cooking process is shorter than beef rendang. There are two kinds of rendang, dry and wet. Dry rendang can be kept for three to four months, and it is for ceremonial occasions or for special guests. Wet rendang, also known as kalio, can be found in Minangkabau restaurants and without going through the cooling process, and should be consumed within a month. Rendang is often served with rice, ketupat (rice wrapped in woven coconut leaves), and lemang (glutinous rice baked in bamboo tubes)
in Indonesia. Well ... if you pay a visit to Indonesia do not forget to try rendang, the most delicious food in the world!

Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa completes a multi milion dollar renovation
N
usa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa—one of the first five-star luxury properties to grace Bali’s southern peninsula— unveiled the results of a sweeping and substantial refurbishment programme just in time for recent Christmas and New Year’s celebrations. The multi million dollar renovations began in 2010 and were completed December 22, 2011. The property now boasts an extensive range of rejuvenated rooms and facilities, retaining its classic touch but reinvigorated with a new look and feel. “We’ve accomplished our goal of restoring Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa to the grand splendor for which it’s been known,” said Reto Torriani, General Manager of the 297-room, 85-suite property. “The refreshed spaces and brand-new rooms offer guests the latest contemporary comforts and many have already told us we’ve exceeded their expectations,” he said. “The resort has never looked better and will continue to evolve, but we have completely remade the hotel well before its 30th anniversary in 2013.” The resort’s guest rooms and suites demonstrate a perfect union of upmarket amenities set in traditional Balinese architecture. Each room and suite marries local artworks and motifs with dark wood touches and earth-tone fabrics, complete with chairs on the terrace or balcony for a cozy beach-cottage feeling. The elevated elegance qualifies the hotel to upgrade the previous-
ly Superior Rooms to be Deluxe Rooms, and the previously Deluxe Rooms to be Premier Rooms. Renovation work on this iconic landmark building included giving Bali’s first-ever spa a face-lift. Mr Torriani said that everything but the shell of the spa was replaced. “We didn’t just renovate—this was reconstruction,” he said. “We put in new floors, walls, bathtubs— everything!” On top of updates to the facilities themselves, a review of treatments offered by the spa was also undertaken, he added, noting that Nusa Dua Spa uses the world-renowned result-based skincare product, Pevonia Botanica, for its facial menu. The 22-room spa surrounds a 25-metre lap pool, with numerous other facilities that include a sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi, cool pool, fitness centre, aerobics studio, squash and tennis courts, mountain bikes, basketball ring area and an indoor games room. Last year saw the re-launch of a completely newly conceptualised Maguro Asian Bistro, overlooking a thoroughly refitted swimming pool and its sunken pool bar. And continuing this tradition of innovation, Nusa Dua Beach Hotel & Spa invigorated the local hospitality landscape, with the launch of The Lobby in September 2011. This chic lounge bar is the only one in the Nusa Dua area to serve until 2am, providing its valued guests as well as visitors and residents

Tololela, Traditional Village on the Top of Mount Inerie
G
a’e moe Ratu Kae, Kega / Pira moe Ila Wolo, Ga’e Roga, Ga’e Kisa, Denu Reba, Denu Tolo Kedhu, Reba Tolo Pedha and So’o Roro are social strata inherited by the ancestors of the 7 tribes in Kampung Tololela, Jerebuu, Ngada Regency. In that traditional village, there is a hidden beauty, which is more amazing than just social strata.
Mountain Slope Panorama
Tololela Traditional Village is a small village located at the top of the slopes of Mount Inerie Manubhara Village, Jerebuu District. Although it is a small village, but Tololela maintains its own beauty. The inhabitants still maintain the original structure of the village in accordance to what had been inherited by their ancestors. The house architecture is quite distinctive, original and traditional just other traditional houses in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT). The materials used for the building can be found easily by the villagers such as bamboo and alang-alang (coarse grass). The authenticity becomes more perfect with the presence of megalith sites that are still intact and well preserved, such as Watu Lewa, Nabe Meze, Ture Nua, Ngadhu and Bhaga which is located in the middle of the village. Tololela is located about 3 km north from the centre of Manubhara village, and this makes the village can be reached easily. To reach this village, we can use the four wheel off-road type vehicle or ojeg (motorcycle taxi service) at a negotiable cost or in other words
‘based on an agreement’. Want it to be more memorable? Go on foot! Yes, tourists can also walk for about 20 minutes while enjoying a variety of community-owned plantations. Of course this offer is hard to be rejected, given that Kampung Tololela is situated on the top of the slopes of Mount Inerie. Natural landscape and scenery around Mount Inerie in Jerebuu region are certainly difficult to find in other areas. Natural beauty of mountain slopes and view of various traditional villages spread in the subdistrict of Jerebuu are things difficult to reject. It’s also possible to enjoy this beauty up in the air considering that the village is also potential for the development of aerospace sports attraction that is paragliding.
Jai Dance
As people’s life in traditional villages in general, a variety of traditional ceremonies also take place in Tololela village. They include Reba Ceremony that is held every December 28 of each year, the ceremony of the construction of traditional houses, ceremony for the construction of Ngadhu and Bhaga, construction ceremony of Ture Watu (monument or inscription for one of the figure in the traditional house), and so forth. Every traditional ceremony is of course filled with various traditional rituals such as traditional ceremony of Ture Watu, which is usually preceded by Jai Dance rituals or traditional dance that was delivered in groups accompanied by gong. Tourists can also partici-
Old Village Bena And Its Surroundings Visiting traditional village of Bena is a must for those who wish to travel to Flores. The village is located in the southern of Bajawa town, precisely in Tiworiwu Village that can be reached less than 30 minutes from Bajawa. The village is quite unique considering that it is the one and only village on the island of Flores, which still maintains its tradition from generation to generation. It can be seen from the megalithic buildings consisting flat stone construction just like menhir created by Obelix in the Asterix comics. The villagers still inhabit the houses made of wood, bamboo and thatched roof. Bena Village is inhabited by nine tribes that live in more or less around 40 traditional houses. In some roof, we can see a doll-like decoration that holds an arrow. It symbolizes that the house belongs to the family from the man side of a native tribe, which is Ngada tribe. For houses that are decorated with a small house decoration on its roof symbolizes the house of the family from the woman side of the native tribe. The houses that are facing each other by following the contour of the land are divided into several levels. There are 2 small traditional houses at that level. The first traditional house has an umbrella shape with thatched roof, and there are adjoining wood as a supporting pillar in the middle of it. The building is referred to as lopo. And a small building in front of it that is shaped like a miniature of
a little house is called bhaga. Both houses are the unifying symbol of family in this village. The simplicity of Bena village can be seen from the hospitality of the villagers. They always smile and say hello to everyone who came to visit the village of Bena. There is not any admission fee to enter this village, but we have to give a donation and sign the guest book before entering the village. Donations collected will be used for maintenance of the village to preserve the authenticity of its tradition. The traditional village that has become the icon of cultural tourism in Ngada Regency has been known as a tourist destination since the 1970s. In the old village of Bena, we can also visit natural hot spring Wae Wewu that is located 150 m from the village of Bena. Besides traditional village of Bena, there are also other traditional villages which can be visited such as: the village of Be’a, Luba, Gurusina and Tololela. In addition to the cultural Tourism, Ngada Regency also offers beautiful natural attraction such as Malanage Hot Spring that is located in Jerebuu district, about 9 km from the village of Bena and natural beauty of Mount Inerie. Climbing Mount Inerie is a perfect activity for tourists with special interest. In addition to climbing activity, tourists can also do trekking activities towards the village of Tololela and Gurusina.(*)
pate in all the series of events as long as they follow the customs regulations. If you come at the right during the ritual of building the traditional house and welcoming special guest / honorable guests, tourists can enjoy attractions such as Jai Laba Go. In addition, there is also the ritual of Teke that is usually performed on the construction of traditional house, and Soka Sa’o ceremony performed at the construction of traditional houses as well as O Uwi. There is also Soka Uwi which is always presented Reba ceremony; Soka Ulu Watu, at the construction of Ulu Ture or monuments.
Traditional Waving Patterns and Architecture
Do not leave the village without bringing a variety of beautiful from Tololela. The people in this village have great talent in making souvenirs, starting from the traditional weaving patterns of Ngada, traditional wicker like wati, bhodo and bere, which are made from local materials and many more. Both crafts are made by middle-aged women who are very creative! The village still has more to offer to the tourists such as Weti Sao (special engraving for traditional house) made by traditional artists that consist of people who have special expertise and has been endorsed through a traditional ritual. So, the maker cannot be anybody who can make it. What about the price? No need to worry about it. All of these crafts can be purchased directly at people’s houses. So the price is “based on agreement” or negotiable. (*)

arantuka is still nothing compared to the other capital of regency in East Nusa Tenggara. Larantuka is a small town with the topography that does not support the growth of this area. The south part is straight to the sea and the north part is going up to Mount Mandiri. With such condition, Larantuka grows from west to east for about 10 kilometers. The population is not so high and quite homogenous. Economy activities in this area are still up and down. Larantuka is facing Adonora and Solor. Anyone who ever visited Larantuka and come back after quite a long time will not find any significant changes there. This place remains quiet, tranquil, stable and static since long time ago. Many people think that Larantuka is more suitable for place to rest, spend old time, far from the crowd of modern world. Historically, Larantuka used to be very popular, even before the independence of Indonesia. It is due to the Catholics tradition that remains growing and survives until today. Semana Santa and Hari Bae are two traditions during Easter Day that have become icon of the tradition. Portuguese influence in Larantuka can be clearly seen from the family name such as Fernandez, Diaz, De Ornay and Da Silva and also vocabulary such as galu, which means rooster. People here also inherited the spirit of adventure from Portuguese people. This is also based on Jesus’ message “Go all over the world and spread the good news to all people!” We cab find nagi people (people of Larantuka) all over Indonesia such as Riberu and Lamuri in Bajawa, De Ornay in Ruteng, Montero in Ende, Fernandez and Diaz in Sumba. Most of them become Catholic teacher. Larantuka people are very proud of this and if we ask them “How big is Larantuka?” they will answer “It’s not even bigger than the first knuckle bone of your middle finger.” If we change the question into “How big is the influence of Larantuka to outside world?” they will answer “It’s more than the last knuckle bone of your finger.” This answer has been transferred from one generation to another. In Larantuka family, parents always guide their children to build such thinking concept, which aimed at creating sense of proud and spirit of patriotism. In many literatures, Larantuka is called as the Shining City. Catholics in Indonesia grows and develops in this place. When a boy or girl wants to leave Larantuka, they have to get two kinds of permissions, imperative permission from King of Larantuka and family permission from parents and the big family. After they leave Larantuka, their parents, whole families and also people of Larantuka will keep praying for them so they will not feel alone in their new place. Those who leave Larantuka are not alone, their body and soul will always be guided by prayers from their village in Larantuka. Their success

Even tersebut melibatkan 40 negara partisipan. Kedua, green enginner. Ketiga, education and inovation, contohnya pengajaran kepada anak dan biomasa. Keempat environment, contohnya pupuk dan makanan organik. Kelima, world show page, contohnya pertanian dan kehutanan.
Eropa Masih Pasar Potensial

TdS Dongkrak Citra Pariwisata Sumbar
W

Mari Pangestu: Kembangkan Agrowisata Bunga
Juan Edwin dan Buah Kasih Kalpitadjati saat bertemu Menparekraf, Mari Elka Pangestu
N
