conTRADITION
Yokoso!
Yokoso! Welcome to the eighth edition of CAMERA JAPAN! This year we have chosen to celebrate Japanese traditions, or more accurately, how these are revitalised in modern art forms. We do this under the name conTRADITION. Japan is an island where centuries-old traditions live on to this day, but is also known as a modern and westernised culture. But how can people, in a country that is so modernised, continue to cling to their traditions? When taking a closer look, you will see that these seemingly old customs and beliefs have also been subject to change and are sometimes not even of Japanese origin. For easy reference we have marked all events related to conTRADITION with in our programme. The number eight is supposed to be a lucky number in Japan, as in Japanese the character for ‘eight’ broadens at the bottom signifying prosperity. Not that we are superstitious, we believe that the success of the festival is based on the hard work of our dedicated team of volunteers, and the generous (financial) support we receive from our subsidisers, sponsors and partners. All are essential components of our festival and we hope you enjoy the result of all our efforts. Because nothing is more rewarding than seeing everyone having a great time at CAMERA JAPAN!

Bad Film SONO Sionww
In 1995, SONO Sion, then a poet and leader of the performance art collective Tokyo Gagaga, shot a raw version of this violent and racy comedy about a world in which fighting gangs of Japanese nationalists and Chinese immigrants dominate the streets of Tokyo. It took some years of heavy editing – a staggering 150 hours of material was narrowed down to 161 minutes – but finally everyone can enjoy this unique film by one of Japan’s most intriguing independent directors.

Hun dochter Naoko is echter blind. To be blindly in love, both literally and figuratively. This film tells the story of Kentaro, a 35 year-old introvert city hall employee, whose private life revolves around his parents, his frog and video games. Concern about his future leads his parents to call on an nakodo (a matchmaker) and they attend a counselling meeting for parents. The only couple to respond positively are a haughty salaryman and his wife. However, their daughter Naoko is blind. And her father is dead-set against Kentaro.

Kueki Ressha
Kitamachi, a 19-year-old labour worker who only stayed at school as far as middle school, spends his free time reading, drinking alone and visiting his favourite peep shows. He hasn’t paid the rent for his tiny apartment in months and his social life is virtually non-existent. That all seems to change when he meets the ambitious student Kusakabe, who helps him in his quest to befriend the beautiful Yasuko. But if anyone is capable of destroying this new found happiness in an instant, it’s poor old Kitamachi.

Gacchaman
Live action remake of the anime of the same name that aired on Japanese TV in the seventies. Galactors, a species not so different from humans apart from the x-virus they carry, are bent on extinguishing humankind. Protected by a red shield, they can only be harmed by the so-called G-agents. As modern ninjas, the G-agents protect the safe havens of the human race.

HK: Hentai Kamen
It does not get much weirder than this superhero flick based on the hilarious manga “Kyukyoku!! Hentai Kamen”. High school student Kyosuke likes to dress up in nothing more than a Borat-style bathing suit and cover his head in women’s underwear, while pretending to be his alter ego: Pervert Mask. When he gets his hands on the underwear of a female classmate, he gains a variety of perverse superpowers.

Having caused a deadly car crash, cult leader Rui hides for safety in his remote beach house, afraid of anyone seeking revenge. He hires three security guards and starts to contemplate the years that lie behind him. For once, he does not seem to be so sure of his own teachings concerning life and death. Director TOYODA poses philosophical and existential questions throughout this mix of thriller and psychological drama, jumping back and forth in time. Lead actor FUJIWARA Tatsuya, most famous for his role in Battle Royale, strikingly lets melancholy and repentance seep through his icy character.

A powerful earthquake hits the fictitious prefecture of Nagashima, causing a tsunami and explosions at the local nuclear power plant. Stubborn dad Yasuhiko decides to stay behind with his demented wife even though the area surrounding his home is being evacuated. He forces his only son to move out as quickly as possible and asks him to never look back. Director SONO, mostly known for his more violent and darker films, creates a subtle, simmering tension.

Sennen no Yuraku
The last film by veteran WAKAMATSU Koji (1936-2012), who died at the age of 76 after being hit by a taxi in Tokyo last year. Set in a remote coastal town, the story focuses on two men of the Nakamoto clan. “With their looks, women can’t keep away from them. And they all die young”, says the midwife who brought most of them into this world. A serene and slow paced drama, especially in comparison to the other recent films by WAKAMATSU, that were mostly violent and political in nature. Based on the novel “A Thousand Years of Happiness” (1982) by NAKAGAMI Kenji.

Sado Tenpesuto
In this bleak adaptation of Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, the singer of a Japanese rock band wakes up as a prisoner on the island of Sado, where it is always winter and time seems to be standing still. A demon leads him to Prospero, an exiled man who tells him of the Demon songs that have caused the eternal winter, but are also capable of bringing back spring. British director John WILLIAMS mixes rock music and Shakespeare into a dark and modern fairy tale that with its repeating mantra’s and crooked camera angles has an almost hypnotic effect on the viewer.

After finishing elementary school, Satoru, the self-proclaimed defender of the public housing project in which he lives, decides to drop out and follow his dreams: becoming as strong as the legendary karate master OYAMA Masutatsu and working in his favourite cake shop. Satoru does not need much to be satisfied, but when all his old school friends start to leave the projects, his resilience to never leave his neighbourhood – caused by a traumatic experience in his childhood – is becoming more and more problematic.

Because of her last name “Kumada” (meaning bear + rice paddy) and her appearance, high school girl Risa is often called “Pooh” and except for her pet parrot and the goldfish in the science room she does not really have anyone to talk to. A Story of Yonosuke Yokomichi Yonosuke
Yonosuke is a typical Japanese on-screen hero: socially awkward, childish and naive, but always cheerful and charming. We meet him when he moves from Nagasaki to Tokyo in the late eighties at the height of the city’s economic boom. Despite his odd character he manages to make new friends at university, joins a samba class and falls in love with an older woman. Sixteen years later his friends are all reminiscing over their college days, thinking back on how Yonosuke changed their lives. A heart warming, crowd-pleasing comedy that takes a sudden dramatic turn.

Tenchi: The Samurai Astronomer Tenchi meisatsu
Romanticised portrait of Yasui Santetsu, a17th-century math genius determined to create a new and better calendar on the basis of star states and solar eclipses. Resolutely pursuing his ideal, he learns from wise masters along the way, while being thwarted by the conservative Kyoto court, who wants to stick with the 800-year-old traditional calendar. Director TAKITA Yojiro previously won an Oscar for ‘Departures’ (2008).

Saori works as a call girl for the physically disabled. As prostitution is illegal in Japan intercourse is not part of her job, but other sexual acts are allowed under Japanese law. While she initially took the job just for the easy money, she soon becomes emotionally involved in the lives of her clients. Throughout her interactions with these men, she slowly manages to beat her depression. Actress KOIZUMI Maya, who started out as a gravure idol, the Japanese version of the pin-up girl, plays Saori with reserve and respect.

Tokyo kazoku
Companion piece to ‘Tokyo Story’ (1953), also screened at CAMERA JAPAN this year in a digitally restored version. Just as in OZU Yasujiro’s masterpiece, an elderly couple travels to Tokyo to meet their children. Not much seems to have changed in the 60 years since ‘Tokyo Story’: the kids are all too busy to spend time with their parents, not realising it might be the last chance they get. Director YAMADA Yoji worked as an assistant on the original film and decided to bring the powerful story to the 21st century as a homage to his mentor. And just as OZU, he is able to find beauty in the smallest of things, like the proud gaze of a mother at her son.

When a local cop catches him killing a bull for his wall decorations, he asks Shoji to help him punish those criminals that escape through the cracks of the justice system. He has gathered info on all of them in a little book, but is too much of a coward to beat them up himself. A raw, violent and uncompromising piece of art. Director MIYAMOTO Moriro named the film after Kyoto’s film studio area, Uzumasa, and one of his favourite film makers, Italian cult director Gualtiero JACOPETTI.

An ex-whore turned bar proprietor, a novelist who’s lost all hope and a discharged soldier who lost an arm in combat all battle with the horrors of war in this hedonistic WWII-tale of sin, lust and the loss of innocence. Victims become culprits and oppressors become victims. A brave debut by INOUE Junichi, apprentice of the legendary director WAKAMATSU Koji, based on a controversial novella written in 1946. A film that redefines Japanese cinematic history and a powerful message to the nationalistic forces that still exist in the country today.

Kortom: lekker maf vermaak. Absurdist CG-animation film about three girls who stumble upon a living anatomy model in an old classroom. The model goes by the name of Mr. Kunstlijk: Louis Thomas Jerome Kunstlijk, to be precise. He is fed up with children making drawings on his skin, and is now out for revenge. The girls are put to the test through a series of tasks, but as it turns out they are tougher than they appear. The fact that Kunstlijk isn’t very bright doesn’t help either. Bloody at times, but always in a playful and comical way.

In this programme CAMERA JAPAN showcases the future of Japanese anime with two short films. ‘Ryo’ by animation studio Gonzo is an historic epic set during the Battle of Hakodate (1868-1869) and tells the story of a young man who lost his parents during the attack of English ships on a Japanese town. In the suspense-filled ‘Death Billiards’, produced by studio Madhouse, a game of billiards turns into a struggle between life and death. Both films were created under the flag of Anime Mirai, a yearly training project for young animators. Preceded by the short ‘The Moon That Fell Into the Sea’, a gentle animation about the fate of a sunken moon.

AURA - KOGA MARYUIN’S LAST WAR AURA 〜魔竜院光牙最後の闘い〜 AURA 〜 MARYUUIN KOUGA SAIGO NO TATAKAI 〜
Romantic school drama based on a light novel written by TANAKA Romeo in 2008, about high school freshman Ichiro. He used to call himself ‘Maryuin Koga’ and act as if he was a hero in a fantasy world. His imaginative spirit caused him to be bullied a lot, so he decides to quit ‘Maryuin Koga’ when he enters high school. One day, when he sneaks into his school in the dead of night he encounters a beautiful girl called Ryoko. The mysterious girl claims to be a ‘researcher from a parallel universe’, and Ichiro starts getting involved in her delusions, even though he vowed to never again get lost in the world of imagination.

In his surprising debut director UJICHA crafts a crazy fantasy story out of paper drawings. High school girl Beniko discovers her family temple has been attacked by a group of monks, who stole all the Buddha-statues and left behind only the lower halves of her parents. Through a magical process the monks forged together with the statues, turning them into hideous monsters. Despite the two dimensional material, depth is created by the Gekimation technique (painted paper cut-outs are animated by hand). The result is sometimes scary, sometimes ironic, but always bizarre.

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo Q Hokago middonaitazu
In this action-packed anime, the third instalment in the remake of the Evangelion saga, the story continues 14 years after the end of part two. Shinji is part of a small number of elite children who are trained to control the Evangelions: technologically advanced fighting units, synthesises of human will and machine. Waking up after orbiting in a container in space for years, he discovers earth has been left in ruins. His colleagues do not seem to be to happy with Shinji resurfacing and Rei, the female pilot for which Shinji has a weakness, is nowhere to be found.

A must-see for those who love anime and anyone interested in the history of Japanese animation. Consisting of 12 shorts made between 1928 and 1931 by second generation animators. Among them is MURATA Yasuji, who had a big influence on the ‘Godfather of anime’, TEZUKA Osamu (creator of Astro Boy, 1952).The Japanese industry had to compete with the immensely popular Disney and needed to produce animation on the cheap, resulting in charming cut-out animation instead of the more expensive cell animation used by bigger studios. These classics, mostly shown with their original soundtracks, are very different from what we now consider anime. ’conTRADITION’ Theme programme

The Life of Budori Gusoku Aura Gusukoo budori no denki
Budori Gusuko lives a peaceful and humble life together with his parents and his younger sister, in a small house near the forest. But when an extremely cold winter hits the forest he ends up being completely alone in the world. Years later, as a scientist, he works to ensure no one has to deal with that kind of tragic loss again. Just as in his earlier literary adaptation ‘Night on the Galactic Railroad’ (also based on a story by MIYAZAWA Kenji) director SUGII Gisaburo transforms the original human characters into cats. And once again, the result is a wonderful fairy tale.

Just after the Minister of Health and Welfare has proposed a programme of birth control to tackle the rising population of post-war Japan, he discovers that not only his 48-year-old wife is pregnant, but that also his youngest daughter and his eldest son are both expecting a ‘burden of love’. A delightful screwball comedy portraying a bourgeois household during the first post-war baby boom, directed by one of Japan’s most beloved comedy filmmakers. KAWASHIMA’s first film for Nikkatsu, with IMAMURA Shohei (‘Unagi’) as assistant director.

Tokyo Monogatari
Without a doubt one of the most beautiful and profound films to have come out of Japan, if not the world. The story is as simple as it can be: a retired couple travels to Tokyo to visit their adult children, who are too busy to pay them any attention. But the emotional impact of the dialogues and OZU’s graceful direction make this a true masterpiece. Ranked first on ‘Sight & Sound’s 2012 Director’s poll’ of the greatest movies ever made. The version we will screen is the digitally restored version, which had its international premiere at the Berlinale in February this year. ’conTRADITION’ Theme programme

Eighteen months after the devastating Fukushima earthquake of 2011 and the nuclear disaster that followed, a young foreign filmmaker travels to the region. With his camera he starts following a few concerned mothers, all worrying for the health of their children. Multiple children suffer from severe nose bleeds and are developing skin rashes and thyroid cysts. At the same time, decontamination of their living environment proves to be insufficient and virtually impossible. Questions by their parents are met with inconclusive responses by government officials. Winner of the award for Best Newcomer at ‘Nippon Connection’ in Frankfurt.

On a research journey in 2007 to the island group of Miyakojima, situated around 300 kilometres south-west of Okinawa Island, musician KUTOBA Makoto encountered a unique variety of religious songs and dance rituals that date back to shamanistic times. Director ONISHI followed in his footsteps to document the spiritual roots of ancient Japan and even organised a successful showcase in Tokyo. For most of the performers, some of them over 90 years old, it was their first visit to the nation’s capital. A beautiful memento to a cultural heritage threatened with extinction. ’conTRADITION’ Theme programme

The Successor of Kakiemon Suzanne RAES
As far back as in the 17th century, a family in the Japanese town of Arita makes porcelain of the highest quality. The distinctive soft white colour and the meticulously hand painted decorations have made Kakiemon a phenomenon, making it the world’s most precious ceramics. The head of the family has even been proclaimed a Living National Treasure in Japan. And now it is time for him to pass the baton to his successor. His son Hiroshi is proud to carry on the renowned name, but feels creatively confined because he has to follow the original style strictly. Documentary maker Suzanne RAES shows the discipline that is needed to keep a tradition alive.

A city poem about Tokyo, its 13 million inhabitants and the 20,000 crows that observe them from above. After the population of these black birds soared in recent years, the city decided to fight back. Crows were trapped and their nests were destroyed. But the animals adapted, mirroring the ever-changing metropolis that is their habitat and showing their ingenuity in finding alternative ways of building nests and gathering food. A number of Tokyo residents including an ornithologist, a Buddhist priest and a homeless woman share facts, folklore and anecdotes on these sturdy birds.

Nippon no omiseyasan
Director OKUTANI Yoichiro follows the last remaining Misemono in Japan. Misemono, literally meaning ‘things to show’, was one of the most popular and cheap forms of entertainment in early modern Japan and consisted of a travelling circus of ghoulish curiosities like freaks shows, wild animals, acrobatic performances and displays of craftsmanship. A rich and valuable account of a diminishing profession and its life on the road.

CAMERA JAPAN Kick-off Party
Damo SUZUKI (Can) with DJ Scotch Bonnet Iku Sakan • DJ Die Soon De aftrap van CAMERA JAPAN in Rotterdam is dit jaar voor de legendarische ex-CAN zanger Damo SUZUKI en de jonge underground discipelen Scotch Bonnet, Iku Sakan en Dj Die Soon. Samen zullen zij een unieke livesessie ten gehore brengen. De drie laatstgenoemden zullen tevens solo optreden.
What better way to kick off CAMERA JAPAN in Rotterdam than with vocalist Damo SUZUKI, who, might we add, used to be the vocalist for krautrock legends CAN! Damo will team up for an exclusive jam with a line up of some of today’s most celebrated Japanese underground protagonists, all of whom will also be playing solo sets.
DAMO SUZUKI Former singer of Can, one of the most influential bands of the last century. In 1983, the pioneering krautrocker initiated his ’Damo Suzuki Network’: a never ending tour, playing each and every show with an improvised line up of locals and friends, subsequently becoming virtually the biggest band on earth, with an estimated 500+ members.
DJ SCOTCH BONNET ISHIHARA Shigeru aka DJ Scotch Egg recently wowed crowds with Drum Eyes and Devilman. His new solo project Scotch Bonnet sees him swapping the Game Boy and 8-bit limitation of DJ Scotch Egg for hefty bass-driven breaks and dope beats referencing Scorn, NHK and the dance music culture of his latest home-town, Berlin.

IKU SAKAN In his richly textured music, Iku Sakan searches for soulful moments from soulless materials through a constantly shifting collection of sound sources, melding improvisation and dj’ing practices. In recent years he has been developing his craft within the network of underground venues and musicians in Berlin, both as a musician and concert organiser. He collaborated with e.g. Maher Shalal Has Baz, Frisk Frugt and Muneomi Senju (ex- Boredoms).
DJ DIE SOON (DYSU) DJ Die Soon (or ’Dysu’) made his presence known in the electronic music scene with an impressive number of live shows, hitting hard with his unique brand of Japanese horror induced, beat heavy music. Dysu is a keen collaborator (teamed up with Shigeru Scotch Bonnet to start Small But Hard Records) and shared stages with e.g. Kool Keith, DJ Krush & Roots Manuva.

UEDA Maki - Scent of Geisha (ueda.nl)
To the traditional geisha, scents were a tool of her trade. During this casual intervention in the lobby, a geisha will entertain your sense of smell, using a variety of such tools and skills. But she is also a member of the CAMERA JAPAN audience, so you may well spot her watching a movie, having a drink or making chit-chat. Who knows, if you stick around, she may surprise you too!
Ampuku Massage
Ampuku is the name of a Japanese massage technique directed at the area in and outside of the stomach. Developed from Shiatsu, Ampuku means ‘the heartbeat of Hara’. Hara is Japanese for stomach and represents the energy centre. An Ampuku massage stimulates the Hara area and in this way makes sure that energy can flow unhindered. Fr. 27/09 and Sat. 28/09, LantarenVenster / Rotterdam €5 (for a massage of 15-20 minutes)

Lectures War, Women and Censorship Luk van HAUTE
During the war, the military regime expected Japanese women to be represented as virtuous and patient. Ironically, during the ensuing occupation (1945-1952) it was the American authorities who objected to literary portrayals of women diverging from that image. As a result, writers depicting prostitutes or comfort women faced censorship. Luk van HAUTE, translator of SAKAGUCHI Ango’s short story ‘A Woman and War’ into Dutch, places this curious care in the wider context of censorship in post-war Japan.
