Juhász Gyula: Karácsony felé Szép Tündérország támad föl szívemben Ilyenkor decemberben. A szeretetnek csillagára nézek, Megszáll egy titkos, gyönyörű igézet, Ilyenkor decemberben. …Bizalmas szívvel járom a világot, S amit az élet vágott, Beheggesztem a sebet a szívemben, És hiszek újra égi szeretetben, Ilyenkor decemberben.
Merry Christmas!

Vezetőségi rovat Szomorú szívvel búcsúzunk Makó Zoltántól, a WMASz egyik alapító tagjától, első elnökétől, a közösség lelkes támogatójától, aki november 27-én váratlanul elhunyt. Nagyszerű ember volt, szerető férj, odaadó apa, jó barát.... sokaknak fog hiányozni. Emléke szívünkben örökké élni fog! Nyugodjon békében! Őszinte részvétünket fejezzük ki a gyászoló családnak. (Búcsúztatásáról részletek a 12. oldalon találhatók.) —————— —————— Mikulás. Ho-ho-ho! Jön a Mikulás! Versikékkel, énekekkel köszöntik majd a hosszú útjában megfáradt nagyszakállút a gyermekek. Tömött puttonyából minden jó gyerek kap egy kis csomagot! Gyertek el! Karácsony. A Magyar Iskola növendékei és népitánc csoportunk táncosai már lelkesen készülnek az idei karácsonyi ünnepségre, amit december 22-én tartunk a Mercer Island-i Presbiteriánus templomban (ott ahol tavaly is volt). Dénes atya Vancouverből sajnos nem ér rá ezen a napon, ezért a műsor előtt idén nem lesz katolikus mise. Szeretettel várunk mindenkit a közös ünneplésre! Magyar Ház. Felhívásunk óta közel 35 ezer dollár érkezett be a Magyar Házra adományként, ezzel is közelebb jutva álmaink megvalósításához! Ezúton is köszönjük támogatásukat. A ház falán táblán fogjuk feltüntetni az adományozók neveit. Aki most szeretne adakozni a ház vásárlásához, annak figyelmébe ajánlom az online adományozás lehetőségét a honlapunkon keresztül: gyors, könnyű és megbízható! Konzuli nap. Rövidesen újabb kihelyezett konzuli napot szervezünk azok számára, akik lejárt magyar útlevelüket szeretnék meghosszabbítani, illetve a magyar állampolgársági kérelmet beadni.

Board’s Column It’s with heavy hearts that we say farewell to one of HAAW’s founding members, first president, and an enthusiastic supporter of our community, Zoltán Makó, who suddenly died on November 27th. He was a great man, a loving husband, a caring father and a good friend. He will be missed by many! His memory will live on in our hearts. May he rest in peace! Our sincere condolences to the family. (Details on the memorial service are on page 12.) —————— —————— Santa’s visit. Ho-Ho-Ho! Santa is coming! The kids will welcome Santa with songs and poems, and he in return will give out little packages to every good child. Please come and bring your kids to see Santa! Christmas. The students of the Hungarian school and the Kisbetyárok dancers are already practicing for our Christmas program that will take place on December 22 at the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church (where we had it last year). Unfortunately Father Denes from Vancouver is not available that day so we will not have a Catholic mass before the program. We look forward to seeing everyone at the celebration. Hungarian House. We have received nearly $35K in donations for the Hungarian House since we sent out our initial announcement. This will bring us closer to achieving our dream. We appreciate and thank you for your support. We will place a plaque inside the house on the wall with the donors’ names on it. If you would like to donate now, you can do it online from our website: it is fast, easy and safe. Consular day. We are going to have another remote consular day soon for those of you who wish to renew expired Hungarian passports or would like to submit requests for Hungarian citizenship. We have been working with the Consulate General in Los Angeles to coordinate this event. We will send out a notification as soon as we have a date set. Hírek. There is no Hírek in January. The next issue is published in February. I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! - Zsuzsa Stanfield, president

A hölgyek káprázatos, a hollywoodi vörös szőnyeghez méltó estélyi ruhákban tündököltek, és irigylésre méltó könnyedséggel közlekedtek a magasabbnál magasabb sarkú cipőkben. Nagy Tibor (a vezetőség egyetlen férfitagja) a hölgyek lába előtt hevert (tényleg!) legalábbis a csoportképen!

Hollywood in Seattle I’ve always known that a lot of famous Hungarians have ended up in Hollywood, but who knew that Hollywood would end up among us Hungarians!? But it happened… on November 10 we had a chance to attend a HAAW-organized Glamour Party. The otherwise serene hall of the Mercer Island Presbyterian Church and the tables were decked out in flashing, sparkling decorations. And speaking of decked out, the guests were pretty spiffy themselves! The ladies wore evening gowns or outfits worthy of the Hollywood red carpet (and moved around with surprising ease in the 4+ inch heels). The gentlemen didn’t lag behind either, some of them even donned tuxedos. There were about a dozen kids, too, and it seemed that they were having a ball. At the end of the night some awards were handed out for the most glamorous outfits worthy of movie stars. We even had paparazzi: Zoltán Homoródi snapped some wonderful photos of the guests arriving on the red carpet. I happened to catch the moment when he was taking pictures of the HAAW board: what can I say? I’ve been involved with many boards but this was by far the best looking group of board members. Tibor Nagy (the only male member of the board) seemed to be quite thrilled being surrounded by such lovely ladies – he literally lay at their feet in one of the photos! I don’t know who was in charge of putting the music together, but it was a wonderful variety of modern American music mixed with some Hungarian rock hits. It was perfect for both listening and dancing. Dinner was prepared by the Gulyás family: wiener schnitzel, potatoes, pickles. Not only was it delicious, it was elegantly plated and promptly served! Dessert was an equally tasty apple pastry, thanks to Lilla Dare. In addition to the fun pictures, dancing and chatting with friends, there were also tables set up where both young and young at heart could try their luck at roulette, Black Jack, and poker. Congratulations to the organizers for a great idea and the immaculate planning, and thanks for providing the 60+ participants a chance to enjoy a moment of “sparkle” during our dreary, wet fall season.

Forever Young Club
November is one of those “cozy” months where it’s just nice to sit by the fireplace with friends along with a cup of hot apple cider. Or, you could say it’s a time to share good conversation and food with friends. That is just a couple of the reasons that brought our Forever Young group together during November. We all came out on a terrific Saturday afternoon for friendly conversation and imaginative fall food.

Snow — Play Day — January 20th, 2013 We will be going to the Hyak Sno-Play area near Snoqualmie Pass for the day. This is less than an hour drive from Seattle and even shorter from the East Side. There are multiple activities there including sledding, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and of course, snowball fights. We'll be meeting at 10:00 a.m. near the bulletin board and bathrooms at the SnoPlay area. Bring warm clothes, picnic lunch, and some hot beverage. If you park at the Sno-Play area it's $30 ($20 with a State Parks Discover Pass). Or, you can drop off your clan on the other (south) side road, park for free at the Snoqualmie East ski area parking lot, and walk 10-minutes. Call Jeff Lerner (206.681.6178) if you have more questions or if you're looking for a carpool. Rain cancels, but light to moderate snow is a go! See: http://www.parks.wa.gov/winter/

Ti Ti Tábor News Long time chef, Richard Wigney, of the Ti Ti Tábor Hungarian camp on Raft Island, died in November due to an unfortunate accident. Even though the pay is very little, the work hard, and the hours long in the camp kitchen, Richard had a love for Ti Ti Tábor and wanted to do what he could to help it continue. I was fortunate to work in his kitchen and Richard was always so patient with everyone and usually had a joke or smile to share with campers. He will be missed. Our sincere condolences to his wife, Pat Wigney, and family for his loss. Kisbetyárok News The group had a great time performing for the Ethnic Heritage Council's 22nd Cultural Crossroad Festival in November. Little Erik Benitez stole the show with his stick dance solo! The younger girls did a lively gypsy dance that was also a crowd pleaser. We topped off the day with dinner at Applebee's. I think the children had more fun at the restaurant than the adults! Márta Horváth took some wonderful pictures of our performance to share with the readers! We look forward to the HAAW Christmas program on December 22nd. Hope you all have a Merry and blessed Christmas. Táncház News On November 17th, we had a táncház with music provided by the Forrás Hungarian Folk band. It started with lots of children's games and dances easy enough for everyone to follow. We had some special treats during the evening; Christopher Carlile-Kovács joined the band with his cimbalom, Flora Carlile-Kovács and Kati Gyulai helped lead the children's games, Laci's and Kati's daughter, Panni Orbán, play the violin alongside her dad, and Péter Horváth joined Forrás on the violin to play Szatmár melodies. If you haven't been to one yet, a táncház is a great activity for the whole family!

Ünnepi ízek Taste of Hungarian Christmas Kedves tagjaink! Karácsonyi ünnepségünkön étel- és italvásárt szervezünk Szövetségünk javára, hiszen ezek a termékek voltak a legnépszerűbbek az előző években. Elsősorban házilag készített, ízlésesen tálalt, elvitelre becsomagolt ételeket várunk. Kérjük, hogy felajánlásaikat Gyulai Katinak jelentsék be december 10-ig. (

A Mikulásvárás december 8-án, délelőtt 11.15-kor kezdődik a Mercer Island Congregational Templomban. Mindenkit szeretettel várunk!
School Corner
Halloween As I stepped through the door, a strange, bizarre feeling got hold of me. As I looked around, I saw the blue gown and white mask of the doctor, as if he had just stepped away from the operating table, with his hand pointing at a monster-like creature. No, I was not entering the world of a new Stephen King book but the Halloween party of the Hungarian School. Old and young alike had a great time showing off their costumes. The morning started with a song, dance and a very interesting story, after which the little ones could collect candy at different stations. At one station, the kids learned a rhyme about pretzels and could also try their luck chewing off pretzels from a string, without using their hands of course. In another room, the children had a great time making a cobweb out of yarn while learning a memory game, and then they learned about Hungarian folk tales. At the third corner, they could practice their physical skills by using beanbags for target practice and attempting to put a nose on a pumpkin. At the fourth station, they could play bowling with pumpkins, combined with broom-flying and frog-jumping. The lower-level rooms of the church were filled with a lot of laughter and bright happy faces. The event was wrapped up with delicious snacks and treats of course. It was great to see all the joy and happiness that morning. Hannukah, Santa Claus and Christmas December is a busy month in the Hungarian School: we start practicing our Christmas play and learn about all the holidays in December. The 1st of December, after class and Christmas play practice, we will learn about Hannukah traditions. We are very excited to learn more about this special holiday. We are spending another exciting morning together on the 8th. After our 2nd Christmas play practice, we will be expecting Santa Claus with traditional rhymes and songs. We would be very happy to have families who are not regularly coming to the school join us for this event. The Santa Claus event will start at 11:15 AM at the Mercer Island Congregational Church. Everybody is welcome! Translated by Géza Nemesszeghy

Zoltán Makó (1936—2012) It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we share the news of the passing of Zoltán Makó, dear friend and beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Zoltán was born in 1936 in Polgár. He spent his childhood pestering his older brother István and getting into mischief of one kind or another. He often spoke fondly of time he spent with his own father, helping him on their farm and traveling to cities to get supplies for their small store. During the Hungarian Revolution in 1956, Zoltán along with some friends escaped Hungary and spent time in a refugee camp in Austria. He came to America with dreams of having a different kind of life than the one his parents had. After arriving in America he lived in New Jersey and then Denver, Colorado. He had a variety of jobs and learned how to speak English. He spent much of his free time dancing and playing soccer, his passion in life. In 1962, Zoltán moved to Seattle following rumors of exceptional soccer teams and beautiful girls, and it was there he met his love, Jadwiga. They were married at St. Mary’s Church in 1967 and celebrated their reception at the Polish Hall, where they danced the night away. Jadwiga’s family loved and welcomed Zoltán. Zoltán played for the Seattle Hungarian Soccer Club and worked hard at his small typewriter repair shop to support his wife and eventually their three children Steven, Annamarie, and Jennifer. He loved his family more than anything and proudly shared his Hungarian heritage with them. In early eighties, Zoltán and a few other Hungarian Americans decided it was important to honor their heritage and founded the Hungarian American Association of Washington. He served as the association’s first President and was always an active member in the Hungarian community. Zoltán will be remembered for his kind-heart, generous spirit, and fun-loving nature. He was a wonderful friend, husband, father, and grandfather. He is survived by his devoted wife Jadwiga, adoring children Steven, Annamarie, and Jennifer, son and daughter in-laws Susan, Lee, and Shane, and his loving grandchildren Ryan, Rebecca, and Felix. He is also survived by several family members in Hungary including his brothers István and Ernő. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Swedish Cancer Institute. Services will be held Saturday, December 15 at 9:30 am. Reception will follow. Address: St. Alphonsus Parish 5816 15th Avenue Northwest Seattle, Washington.

Tupperware Fundraiser in Time for the Holidays A karácsonyi ünnepek előtt a WMASz az idén egy vásárlással egybekötött támogatási lehetőséget szervez tagjainak: otthonról, kényelmesen rendelhetnek meg híres Tupperware konyhafelszerelési termékeket. This holiday season, HAAW has set up one more way that you can support our organization: shopping for classic American products by Tupperware from the comfort of your own home. Do you have a favorite piece of Tupperware in your kitchen or your lunch bag? Perhaps you bought it 15 years ago at a party hosted by one of your friends, or perhaps you inherited it from your mother! Tupperware is an American company, started in 1946, which is famous for its high-quality, long-lasting products and its highly successful home-based party model of sales. You cannot get Tupperware in stores, but you can now order it online as well as at parties. Tupperware also offers a good deal to nonprofit organizations: it gives 40% of the sales price of items in its fundraising catalog to organizations, like ours! The fundraising catalog at http://tinyurl.com/ HAAWtupperware offers a special selection of containers, kitchen utensils, reusable lunch bags, reusable water bottles, and kids’ items. Most are air-tight and liquid-tight, virtually unbreakable, and guaranteed for life. We HAAW members participate in a lot of potlucks, so having liquid-tight containers in which to bring our töltött paprika or aranygaluska to the next event is important! And for anyone who cares about the environment, avoiding single-use water bottles and endless boxes of plastic bags is also appealing. Investing in durable water bottles and easy-to-clean lunch containers pays well in the long run. Participating in this fundraiser and getting your Tupperware is easy. Place your order between now and Dec 21st. Your products will be shipped to your address within 10 business days. Be sure to order by Dec 14 if you are intending to give Tupperware gifts for Christmas! This is a great way for those who live a bit farther away to participate, but please note that items ordered through this fundraiser can only be shipped to U.S. addresses. Thank you and happy holidays!
If you have any questions about this fundraiser or would like to participate without using the internet, please contact Julia Deák Sandler (HAAW member and Tupperware Consultant) at 206-522-5578, or email

Sokszor idézem apósomat is aki 1887 óta olvasott újságot. A könyvnek címe: My Only Choice. Részletesebben is mindenkit értesíteni fogunk. Fontos konzuli hír: Pécsről jön a polgármester, Páva Zsolt és többen is a városi vezetőségből. 2013. január 12-15-ig lesznek itt. Mikes Éva, a Seattle-Pécs Testvérváros megállapodás aláírója, akkori alpolgármester is itt lesz.

Kosztolányi Dezső - Karácsony Ezüst esőben száll le a karácsony, a kályha zúg, a hóesés sűrű; a lámpafény aranylik a kalácson, a kocka pörg, gőzöl a tejsűrű. Kik messze voltak, most mind összejönnek a percet édes szóval ütni el, amíg a tél a megfagyott mezőket karcolja éles, kék jégkörmivel.

Consul’s Corner
By: Ilona Szablya, Hon. Consul General
Blessed holidays and a happy New Year to all readers! In the November newsletter I wrote about my new book. Many people to whom I told parts of my life told me to write a book about our entire story. So I did! This is what Hungary was like between 1942 and 1956 as I have lived it. I am not a history professor and was born only in 1934, but with my John, who was 10 years older than I, we remembered many things starting with 1930; as a matter of fact, even before that. In the book I often quote my father-in-law who had read newspapers since 1887. World history played a big role in our lives. I can remember with what excitement I listened to the BBC news and Moscow’s broadcast at age nine. We sat biting our nails beside the radio to find out who won the elections in the United States when I was eleven. After last month’s HIREK appeared I received an inquiry about where to get the book. The title of the book is My Only Choice. I hope that even before Christmas it will be available at amazon.com, but it is not impossible that it will be January before it will be out. A few weeks later it will be available on Kindle. You will be able to order it at any bookstore as it will appear on their computer under ”books in print.” We have not decided on the date yet, but the HAAW will organize a book launching at the Kirkland Community Bookstore (Parkplace Books) where we had our first event for the 50th anniversary of the Hungarian Revolution, in 2006. We will let you know in more detail as soon as we know. Important consular news: The Mayor of Pécs is coming with a delegation of the city January 12-15, 2013. Éva Mikes, the signer of the Seattle-Pécs Sister City agreement, then deputy mayor of Pécs, will also be here. Passport news: Those who were born in the Hungary before Trianon have to complete different forms from those who
were born in present Hungary. The same applies to parents and grandparents after whom you claim Hungarian citizenship. Those born outside the border can find information on the following webpage: www.allampolgarsag.hu. Those born in Hungary can download the forms from the Embassy’s webpage: www.washington.gov.hu. I can send you any of the variations and I can also advise you about which forms you have to fill out. You have to register all births, marriages, divorces, maybe deaths in Hungary . They will then send you a Hungarian birth, marriage, etc. certificate and you can apply for a Hungarian passport based on those. The documents will have to be filed in HUNGARIAN. As I maintain the Consulate from translations, I can translate the documents, but you yourself can do it too. The certification is done in Los Angeles, when you send it in with the original, or with a copy certified by me. www.magyargyerek.com are worksheet-based correspondence competitions for children and teenagers between the ages of 7 and 17. We are welcoming children to the competitions who would like to enrich their knowledge and understanding of Hungary, and cherish the roots of their origin. Our mission is to unite Hungarian children around the world in an insightful and entertaining competition. While completing the exercises, they will learn to understand Hungarian history, culture, and the values of national traditions. They will deepen their knowledge in these areas. This competition’s deadline was November 15th, but look on the website. They will probably have something new that serves the same purpose. www.magyargyerek.com Kraulis Monika, Executive Director,

DECEMBER 2012

Hungarian Press Review
DECEMBER 2012
Translated by Zsóka Jakab
Preserving traditions The volunteer reserve hussar patrol that rode more than six thousand kilometers for over half a year of the “Northern Patrol” has arrived back in Várpalota. Péter Csepi and Sándor Bakó departed from Várpalota on April 7th. They traveled on horseback with four horses, wearing traditional hussar outfits. Their goal was to bring back the ancient Hungarian hussar and horseback-riding traditions, popularize the reserve military service, and spread the good reputation of the country. They had to stop at the city of Amal in Sweden to rest and to have the swollen leg of one of their horses treated. They were arrested and charged with animal cruelty. Although they were released later, it took a month to get the veterinarian’s permission to continue their travels.
Literature To commemorate the 110th anniversary of the birth of her father, Mária Illyés, the daughter of poet Gyula Illyés (19021983), has pulled together a volume of poetry from known and previously unpublished poems of her father. During the selection of the manuscripts, she found a previously unknown, handwritten novel, probably written between 1949 and 1956. In a contemporary interview, the poet himself mentioned that he was working on a novel. The work, entitled Before the Judgment, describes the life of a village and the villagers from 1935 till the early 1950s. The location is identifiable as Ozora, and the novel is significant not only for its description of rural Hungarian life, but also because of its psychological value.
Music The European Choir Association, Europa Cantata, elected Gábor Móczár as its new president. Aside from acknowledging Móczár’s contribution to the Association, this decision is also a serious success in culture diplomacy, and it is tied to the organization of the next international choral meeting in Hungary. The Association has fifty member organizations in Europe, as well as hundreds of choirs and personal members from fifty countries all over the world. This way it directly represents more than one million singers and conductors, indirectly over 20 million.
Minority In a new movement spreading in Transylvania, personnel in stores and service areas wear a button with the “Yes, go on” logo in Hungarian - signaling that they speak the language. The movement is focused especially on larger Transylvanian cities, where people don’t know each other personally and have no way of knowing whether the salesperson or the gas station attendant speaks their native language. In places where the Hungarian population is less than 50%, about one third of the population have been in situations where they knew that the salesperson was also Hungarian, but still they spoke Romanian to each other – for miscellaneous reasons. The use of this button can contribute to the elimination of internal barriers to using the native Hungarian language, barriers that are often emotional or psychological in nature.
Information technology – Folkdance The Information Technology and Automatization Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences has introduced its freshly developed informational infrastructure that allows for great precision and accuracy in recording folk dances. During the presentation, the “dunántúli ugrós” dance was recorded by thirteen cameras and the images were transformed into fourdimension data. The instrumentation of the laboratory, called 3DICC and 4D, is unique in Europe, since it forms threedimensional images based on recordings of millions of picture points. The instruments sense body motion and record such details as which foot was moved and with how much force it impacted the ground. In a nearby room, instruments record the movements of the human body by using data from seventy sensors installed on the costumes. The special movements of the sensors, as related to each other, are recorded. Agriculture According to the vice ombudsman in charge of protecting the interest of future generations, in the debate over land-related laws there is not enough attention paid to how intensive continuous use may result in loss of productivity of Hungarian lands over the long range. According to Marcel Szabó, the law that protects the smaller farms is doing the right thing by also protecting biological diversity. He warned that the current land rules of the European Union don’t consider the agricultural or cultural value of the land but only consider it a means to achieve speculative financial gain. This way, the local villages do not have veto rights in the acquisitions and land transfers that affect them and their environment.
Religion The northern branch of the so-called Maria Road has been developed in the Fertő Lake area. The road is designed to contribute to the revival of centuries-old customs of pilgrimage. It leads alongside bike roads, tourist roads and dirt roads. The posts and signs lead the pilgrims to the Hidegség area, to the Arpadera church, the hospital church and the mountain church in Sopronbanfalva. According to the organizers, the pilgrim is a tourist who enjoys and is interested in the natural environment, as well as the sacred and cultural values. The Hungarian Maria Road was started in 2009 and has been expanding continuously since. Economy – Statistics According to the latest figures, the consumer price increase will surpass by 6% the increase from one year ago. The price of groceries increased by 7% during the last 12 months. The price of eggs increased by 33%, chocolate and cocoa powder by 12%, pork 15%, beef 13%, and poultry by 9%. The price increase of potatoes was 28%, of green vegetables 21%, and that of fresh fruits was 13%. Tobacco products rose 27% and gasoline prices increased by 10% during the last year. The general increase in service fees was 4.2% in the last 12 months. Specifically, garbage fees increased 8%, sewer fees 5%, and water 5%. Postal services rose 12% and phone and internet services cost 6% more that last October.
