A Cílová skupina a stanovení cíle
Koncepce Publikace JOB MATTERS: WOOD je určena studentům a učňům oborů zaměřených na zpracování dřeva, či pracovníkům z oblasti dřevozpracujícího průmyslu. Kurz slouží k osvojení si a rozvíjení odborné angličtiny. Po probrání učiva by měli žáci dosáhnout úrovně B1 Evropského referenčního rámce (Common European Framework of Reference).
Obsah
JOB MATTERS: WOOD nabízí žákům a učňům snadnou cestu ke zvládnutí a osvojení si odborné angličtiny.

Hans-Christian Ramm

T2* Transcript The manager of a sawmill is talking to a visiting student. Welcome to our sawmill. Let me show you around. In this area we take raw timber from the forest and process the logs. A machine cuts off all the branches and takes off the bark. We use everything. We use the large branches to make fence posts and rustic fencing. We sell the bark as mulch for gardens. Everything else – which we call ‘thinnings’ – is turned into sawdust and we sell this to pet shops as animal bedding. – What are these big machines? They are large saws. They saw the logs into timber for the construction industry. That’s one of our two main products. – What’s your other main product? Woodchips. We sell woodchips to factories that manufacture chipboard and hardboard. – Is the wood from the logs smooth? No, actually the teeth of the saws leave the wood very rough. T3 Transcript An apprentice is talking to a timber merchant. I’m an apprentice woodworker and I’ve just been given a research task for college. Can you help me? I need to ask some questions and examine some samples of timber. – Sure. Let’s go into the store and have a look around. Here – put on this high-visibility jacket and safety helmet. Thank you. – I’ll show you some planks first. Over here are the heavy planks. We call them boards. They’re often used for scaffolding. Could they also be used as floor joists? Řešení a tipy
7
– Yes, when placed on edge they give extra strength to floors that must carry heavy weights. Over here in this section we stock lighter materials. Do you know what these are? Yes, they’re battens. They’re nailed to the rafters and they hold roof tiles in place. – Yes, and over here we have larger boards suitable for flooring. These are made with a tongue along one edge and a groove along the other. These are of good quality pine and make an attractive floor when sanded and varnished. Do you have any moulded boards? – Yes, we have a wide range that has been specially machined. These, for example, are skirting boards. I noticed that some of the materials are very rough. These, for example. – That’s right. Be careful or you’ll get a splinter in your hand. These come straight from the sawmill and they’re unfinished. They’re used for things like rafters, floor joists and ceiling joists. They don’t need to be smooth – just cheap! So the smooth timber is more expensive? – Yes, of course. The rough timber is passed through a planing machine and that’s an extra cost. Thank you for your help. Cvičení 4 procvičuje dvě důležité dovednosti: poslech a dělání si poznámek.

T5 Transcript Two students from a technical college are talking to the manager of a timber supply firm. We season timber by removing the excess moisture. But why do we need to do this? – Dry timber is stronger. – Dry timber is also more stable. Seasoned timber doesn’t warp and split. Correct. Seasoning timber makes it stronger and more stable. It also protects the timber against two deadly enemies: fungus and insects! – I see you have timber stored in the open air. Yes, this is the ‘air’ or ‘natural’ seasoning method. Some craftsmen prefer timber that has been seasoned by this method. – It must be a very slow process.

Řešení a tipy
Yes, it is. It takes about twelve months, depending on three factors. Do you know what they are? – I suppose the thickness of the planks and the weather would have a lot to do with it. – And the type of timber, of course. Some types of wood dry more quickly than others. Yes, that’s right. The three factors are: thickness, weather, and type of wood. OK, so now let’s move on to … A: 1. It makes the timber stronger. 2. It makes the timber more stable – it doesn’t warp or split. 3. It protects it against fungus. 4. It protects it against insects. B: 1. The thickness of the planks. 2. The weather. 3. The type of timber.

– Well, the timber for your fence should be treated with a preservative. This will protect it from decay caused by moisture. Wood exposed to the weather needs preserving or it will rot quickly. The preservative will also protect the timber against attack by woodeating insects. Can I apply the preservative myself ? – Yes, you can do it yourself, but I wouldn’t recommend it. It’s much easier to buy ready-treated wood. The ready-treated wood is also better because the preservative is applied under pressure and it goes deep into the timber, which gives it longer-lasting protection. I see. So I could preserve the timber myself, but then the protection wouldn’t last as long? – That’s right. We have materials suitable for home use, but you’ll need to wear protective clothing, gloves and a respirator mask. What! Gloves and a respirator mask! Is it that dangerous? – Oh, yes. Wood preservative is very toxic, so you would need to be very careful. Oh, well, in that case I think I’ll … 1. moisture, 2. insects, 3. pressure, 4. protection, 5. respirator mask

14
Řešení a tipy
– OK. Maria, you don’t need an electric drill for that. You can use a carpenter’s ratchet brace and a bit. Sometimes the old-fashioned way is best. I need to bore the hole exactly 15 milimetres deep. – No problem, Maria. For that you’ll need a depth gauge that can be fitted to the bit. You set the depth you want and the gauge stops the bit from going any deeper. OK. I’d also like the bottom of the hole to be smooth. – OK, for that you use a forstner bit. It will give you a nice clean finish. I also have to bore a larger hole about forty millimetres in diameter. – Forty millimetres wide? That’s four centimetres. You’ll need an expansion bit for that. It has an adjustable cutter and can be set to the required radius. You’ll find everything you need in the tool cupboard, Maria. Now, is there anything else I can …? 1. 20/twenty 2. It should be 15 mm deep. 3. A depth gauge.

Can you help me? I need a good electric drill. – We have a range of models over here on display. We‘ve got heavy-duty drills, generalpurpose drills and cordless drills. Do you want to use it indoors or outdoors? Outdoors. I want to build a garden shed. There are also lots of other jobs around my house and garden that I’ll need it for. – OK, so you’ll need a drill that’s both powerful and portable. The cordless drills are over here. They’re all top quality. That one looks good. Could I have a closer look at it, please? – Certainly, here you go. This is a medium-strength drill. Here try it. It’s suitable for jobs inside the house, but I wouldn’t recommend it for work outside. Yes, I need something more powerful. – No problem. Try this bigger model. It’s a heavy-duty, professional model. It’s got a bigger chuck and lots of power. The rechargeable battery lasts longer, too. Here – try this bit and bore a hole in this piece of hardwood. Oh yes! This is really powerful! – You can also use the drill for countersinking, sanding and as a screwdriver. You also get a battery charger and a spare battery. OK, I’ll take it. Machinery in the workshop Stroje v dílně Lekce 10 představuje studentům pět strojů.

T11 Transcript A master carpenter is showing some students around a workshop. Let’s look at the machines in this workshop. And don’t forget: look and listen, but don’t touch! OK? – Yes, fine. / OK. All the machines have got a number. That’s useful. Number one is a bench saw. What’s it used for? Anyone know? – It makes a straight cut. It’s used for cutting timber into lengths. That’s it. And number two? – It’s a lathe. It turns a piece of wood very quickly so that you can carve it into shapes. It’s good for making round, curved shapes in a length of timber. Correct. Number three is also a saw, but a different kind. Number three is a band saw. What’s it used for? – It can cut curved shapes into timber. Machine number four is a lot smaller. Does anybody know what it does? – It makes mortise and tenon joints. Correct! It’s a mortiser. And here’s the last machine – number five. This one is easy. – It’s a planer. You use it for rough timber. It makes it nice and smooth. Excellent. Now, let’s see how they work. We’ll start with … 1. bench saw, 2. lathe, 3. band saw, 4. mortiser, 5. planer

T12 Transcript Hello, I’m the safety officer. Welcome to our machine shop. All the machines here are powered by electricity. Here on the wall is the main switch that controls the power to all of the machines. Can anyone tell me how important this is from a safety point of view? – In an emergency it can switch off the power to all of the machines at once. Well done. This red switch will stop all the power tools. Each machine also has its own power control, but this is the one you should use in an emergency. Now let’s look at the machines. There are two buttons on each machine. Now watch my lips! The green button turns the power on and starts the machine. The red button turns the power off and stops the machine. Is anyone here puzzled by that? No? – Is there a dust extraction system here? Yes. It’s a very efficient system and each machine is connected to it. Let me show you. As you can see the sawdust has been sucked into the system and removed from the room. It works the same way as the extractor in your mum’s kitchen. So now you’ve learnt the most important thing to know about any machines. What’s that? – Er, how to switch it on and off ? That’s it. You’ve got it. Now let’s go on to specific … 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

T13 Transcript Welcome to the building site! My name is Bill Blunder and I’m the site safety officer. As you can imagine, a building site can be a dangerous place. So I’m now going to tell you about the basic safety procedures you should follow if there’s an accident. Do you have any questions before I begin? – Will we get first-aid training? No, not yet. For now all you need to know is that the first-aid station for the site is at the foreman’s hut. – Is that near the security hut? Yes. There’s a big red cross sign on the side. Now if you see a serious accident, you must raise the alarm by telling another worker. – Should I remain at the scene? Yes. If you see an accident, you must decide what the injured person needs. Does he or she need a doctor or an ambulance or just the first-aid station? You must give clear and simple instructions to a colleague. – Can I move an injured person? No, never move an injured person. They might have a serious back or neck injury and moving them will make it worse. But there are other things you can do to help. You can cover the injured person with a jacket or a blanket. It’s important to keep an injured person warm. And if they have a head injury, you should talk to them and keep them awake. – What else could I do? Well, you could make a mental note of everything you know about the accident because you’ll have to make a written report later. Well, that’s enough for today. I’ll see you again tomorrow and then … 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.

T14 Transcript A master carpenter is talking to an apprentice in the workshop. Well, today we want to nail two pieces of timber together. This is one way to do it. Now watch: we drive two nails straight into the end grain of the wood. But is this a good way to join pieces of wood together? Can you pull them apart? – Oh, yes. They pull apart very easily! So that isn’t a good way to join them. Right, but we can skew nail them by driving the nails into the wood at an angle. Like this. Now then, will this make the joint stronger? What do you think? – I should think so. Can I try to pull it apart? Oh, yes. They hold much better now. OK. Here’s how we can make an even stronger joint. If we want to join two pieces of wood edge to edge, we can use these corrugated fasteners. – Yes, I’ve seen them on timber casings. That’s right. Now, for a big job it’s faster to use a nail gun. First you fill the cartridge with either nails or corrugated fasteners. Never do this when the nail gun is switched on or connected to a power supply. Never forget – this tool can be very dangerous! Never play

around with it. A nail gun can kill you or injure you very seriously. In the wrong hands it can be a deadly weapon! – OK. What if the nails are too long and they go through the wood and stick out the other side? Well, if that happens, you should clinch the end of the nail by hitting it with a hammer and bending it over into the wood. This makes it safer. It also increases the holding power of the nail. – I’ve also noticed that timber sometimes splits during nailing. Yes, that’s why it’s best to stagger the nails, so that they aren’t in a straight line along the grain. This usually prevents the wood from splitting. OK. Now let’s go on to … 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
The master carpenter nailed the two pieces of timber together. The two pieces could be pulled apart very easily. Skew nailing held the pieces together more securely. The teacher used a corrugated fastener. If you have lots of nailing to do, you can use a nail gun. The cartridge must first be filled with nails or fasteners.

Yes, I’ve got a computer at home. But what computer skills do I need for the NVQ? – The National Vocational Qualification for Woodworkers has got five levels. This course is for Level One and Level Two. You don’t need to do the higher levels until you’ve got more work experience in four or five years. In Level One you need to show your competence in basic computer skills. Well, I know how to switch it on and off ! What else do I need to know? – How to write letters, reports and e-mails, how to organize your files. Simple things like that. I can do all that already! – So you haven’t anything to worry about, have you? Level One practises simple, routine work activities. So what computers skills do I need for Level Two? – Do you know what CAD means? Yes. It means Computer Assisted Design. – Good. In Level Two you must be able to produce a simple technical drawing using CAD. Don’t worry about it. You’ll get lots of practice and it won’t be a very complicated drawing. 1. D, 2. C, 3. F, 4. A, 5.
