ISSN 0323–1046 The paper presents the results of research that was directed to the evaluation of stand species composition and stand structure impact on humus forms state in the Nature Reserve Trčkov (Orlické hory Mts.). Three types of the forest stands, which include spruce monoculture, beech monoculture, both on reforested agricultural land, and natural mixed multi-storeyed stand (spruce was main species and silver fir and European beech were admixed), were selected for this object of the research. Forest soil dynamics evaluation was further part of this project that was achieved by comparing new data with older ones from the previous research. The results confirmed distinct positive effect of beech species on soil chemistry properties of the forest floor, as well as relatively rapid forest soil character restoration. On the other hand, pure spruce stand had unfavourable effect on the main soil chemistry characteristics. Soil dynamics development between the years 1996 – 2003 indicates continuing of unfavourable changes – acidification, decrcase of the bases content in adsorption complex and decrcase of the available nutrients content. 1. Introduction Studies of natural and close-to-nature forest ecosystems are considered asa basic predisposition for the close-to-nature or ecologically sound forestry. The results of studies in these forests are of great importance in different disciplines of forestry or natural sciences as they represent the examples for the foresters, scientists and public education. On the contrary, only few forests under minor human influence were left in the cultural Czech landscape. Their conservation, protection, formation and study of the representative net in the ecological scale are of prime importance for the forest ecology, silviculture, forestry economics, and for the world natural heritage (PODRÁZSKÝ, VIEWEGH 2005). Further, considerable parts of the marginal agricultural lands were reforested and their character started to change again in the past decades. The rapidity and intensity of these processes is not known in general and it is worth of research (HATLAPATKOVÁ et al. 2006, PODRÁZSKÝ 2006a). Finally, the development of forest soils is considered to be negative in spite of continuing acidification of the environment, even after emission intensity decrease (PELÍŠEK 1984, VACEK 1994, VACEK, PODRÁZSKÝ, MAREŠ 1994a, b).

Aim of the presented study is to document the changes of humus forms (layers) depending on species composition and natural dynamics, comparing the semi-natural forest stand and reforested agricultural lands, comparing the effect of particular main tree species – beech and spruce, documenting the state of natural forest soils and their development in the last period. 2. Material and methods The National Natural Reserve Trčkov is located in the NE direction from the main top of the Orlické hory Mts. (Velká Deštná, 1 115 m a.s.l.), on the NE slope at the altitude 920 – 780 m (MAREŠ 1971). The natural species composition was formed by spruce-fir-beech stands with admixture of other site-convenient tree species (sycamore etc.). The area of the Reserve is 65.26 ha, the main forest type groups are 6S (48.7%) and 7K (29.5%). The bedrock is formed by schists with quarcite zones (KACÁLEK 2003). The mean annual temperature ranges around 5 ºC, mean annual precipitation around 1,000 mm. Soil samples, respectively samples of particular layers of humus forms sensu GREEN et al. (1993), were taken in three stands, in four replications. This number resulted in very limited statistically supported statements, which reflected in low significance of the differences in results – on the contrary this number of replications is accepted generally. The iron frame 25×25 cm was used for quantitative sampling of holorganic horizons (L+F1, F2, H), the Ah horizons were not sampled quantitatively. Besides the humus form analysis in autumn 2003, the dynamics of soil characteristics was determined in the stable profile (autumn – October 1996–2003) – the samples were analyzed from particular genetic horizons in the natural stand (407 C17/5b). The analyses were performed by the Laboratory Tomáš, seating in FGMRI Forest Research Opočno, by standard methods (ŠMÍDOVÁ 1991). The analyses performed: - Necromass (dry matter) of particular holorganic horizons, - total nutrient content (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) after mineralization by the sulphuric acid and selene, - plant available nutrient content in 1% citric acid leachate, - pH, soil adsorption complex characteristics by Kappen, total humus content by Springer-Klee and nitrogen content by Kjeldahl method. The particular stands were as follows: - 407 C5a – even aged spruce stand on reforested agricultural land, age about 50 years (PRP 1), - 407 C5a – even aged broadleaved stand with the beech dominance (beech 90%, sycamore 10%), aged about 50 years too (PRP 2), - 407 C17/5b – mixed uneven aged stand with natural tree species composition, fir admixture is lowered, the structure is close to growing-up stage (PODLASKI 2004) with considerable biomass accumulation (PRP 3). Only limited, but indicative set of soil characteristics could be presented for the space shortage in this paper. The statistical evaluation was performed by standard analysis of variance at 95% significance level. 3. Results and discussion The results of determining the holorganic horizons accumulation are presented in the Table 1. The amount of the surface humus on the reforested agricultural localities is roughly 70% of the natural forest ecosystem, on permanently forested soil. The accumulation of surface horizons so appears very fast, and very rapid restoration of the forest character can be supposed, both in the spruce as well as in the beech forest part. Both forest tree species

showed similar amount of surface humus weight. The absolute amount is corresponding to similar site conditions in other regions at intact sites, e.g. in the Czech-Moravian Highland (PODRÁZSKÝ, VIEWEGH 2005), the rapidity is much more intensive then documented in other cases of scarified forest soils (Ore Mts. after bulldozer site preparation) or afforested agricultural lands in less favourable sites (PODRÁZSKÝ 2006a, b). The high quality site is probably the reason in the studied case, connected with relatively favourable growth and litter production and accumulation. On the other hand, the total humus content was considerable lower in the holorganic layers of stands on the former agricultural lands (Table 2). Its percentage was comparable in the litter layer in all ecosystems, but lower the mineral admixture formed considerable part of the F and H horizons. On the contrary, the mixing of organic and mineral substance in the Ah was much lower in the reforested agricultural soils. This indicates high intake of mineral particles in the organic layers of humus forms and lower infiltration of the organic matter into mineral horizons – the absolute results of the Table 1 are not so prominent. Very similar trend, indicating the same processes, was documented for the total nitrogen content (Table 2 again). The pH, determined both in the water as well in the 1 N KCl solution, was the lowest in the humus form of the natural mixed forest, considerably higher in the spruce monoculture and the highest in the beech stand. On the contrary, the S value (bases content) was the lowest in the spruce stand, higher in the natural mixed stand and the best status was registered in the beech stand. The H value (hydrolytical acidity) was the lowest in the beech, the least acid humus form, higher in the spruce stand and the highest in the mixed forest. The lower content at the reforested sites correspond to the lower humus content being there. The T value (cation exchange capacity) was the highest in the beech stand, lower in the mixed forest and the lowest in the spruce stand. These differences in the particular characteristics of the adsorption complex of particular horizons resulted in considerably differentiated picture of the V value (base saturation)

differences: the highest values, the best state, was documented in the beech stand, the situation was very similar in both other stands, values being slightly better in lower horizons of the spruce stand. The soil adsorption complex characteristics seemed to be the most favourable in the beech stand, there were no big differences in the natural and spruce stands. Similar situation was documented in other regions too (PODRÁZSKÝ, VIEWEGH 2005). 1996 pH/KCl

Furthermore, the results of the comparison of the soil chemistry in the years 1996 and 2003 document the trend of continuing acidification, expressed as pH KCl values (Fig. 1) and base 102
saturation (V–value – Fig. 2) decrease. The acidification continues despite the lowering of acid input through acid deposition (VACEK et al. 1994b). The shift especially in the Base Saturation values is very high and needs further concern. Its extent is bigger in the lower horizons, being minimum in the surface layers. The role of leaching, acid deposition and possible annual shifts and deviations have to be taken into account. This was documented also in other regions of the Czech Republic (PODRÁZSKÝ et al. 2005) and it is assumed also by other authors. Only limited part of the results is presented in this paper because of the space shortage, but even limited study enables to describe the main trends in the soil changes after reforestation of the marginal agricultural lands, it can further document the different effects of particular tree species as well as the ongoing soil chemical changes. They are described in the mixed stand, which seems to be stable and some scientists as well as ecological activists state higher resistance of mixed forests against the acidification comparing to spruce ones. In our case it was not true, what can be determined by too low admixture of other species then spruce (PODRÁZSKÝ, VIEWEGH 2005). 4. Conclusions The presented study documents the soil changes in the forest ecosystems of the Orlické hory Mts. from three particular points of view, topical in the forestry as well as recent ecological discussiousn. In the first case, the results confirmed the relatively rapid surface humus accumulation on the former agricultural lands, reaching even 70% of the dry matter amount of the holorganic horizons of the permanently forested soil. The amount of carbon (total humus) fixed is slightly lower because of higher admixture of mineral particles in the F and H horizons of humus forms at the reforested agricultural places. The mixing of organic matter in the Ah horizon was lower on the contrary there, indicating the including of the organic matter in into this humus horizon is not complete yet. From the two tree species planted on the agricultural lands, the beech showed to have better effects – the quality of humus forms was better as well as the soil chemistry in the studied humus forms was considerably more favourable. The quality of soil chemistry in the spruce and mixed natural forest stands is much more comparable, what can be demonstrated by high spruce dominance in the mixed forest. The fir and beech admixture can change effectively the general trend. The progress of the forest soil restitution is very fast, considering the age of both stands planted on the farmland is probably 50 years. There is a question, whether there one rotation be enough for the forest soil character restoration. The soil acidity was still increasing in the studied period, i.e. 1996–2003. It was studied in the mixed natural part of the stand, so the mixture of beech–fir–spruce was not capable to prevent further soil acidification. The higher portion of beech should be probably desirable to confirm this effect. Study of the remnants of natural forests is very important, as well as their comparison with the situation in neighbouring, anthropogenically more influenced stands. In the studied case, the high soil restoration potential of forest ecosystems was, as well as the need for more intensive broadleaved admixture and continuing acidification progress.
V kopané sondě byly srovnány charakteristiky jednotlivých pedogenetických horizontů v letech 1996 a 2003. Byly provedeny analýzy: množství sušiny jednotlivých holorganických horizontů při 105 ºC, obsah celkových živin (N, P, K, Ca, Mg) v těchto horizontech po mineralizaci směsí kyseliny sírové a selenu, obsah přístupných živin ve výluhu 1 % kyselinou citrónovou, půdní reakce aktivní a potenciální, charakteristiky sorpčního komplexu podle Kappena, obsah celkového uhlíku metodou Springer-Klee a celkového dusíku podle Kjeldahla. Výsledky potvrdily značnou rychlost akumulace nadložního humusu, zásoba dosahovala zhruba 70 % zásoby stále zalesněné plochy s přírodě blízkým lesem (tab. 1). 1 a 2) vykazuje pokračující nepříznivé změny – acidifikaci, ztráty bází v sorpčním komplexu a pokles obsahu přístupných živin.
