DE TOONF0ILIMI-ATEL0ERS DER UFA DN VOQEILVLOCHT QEZDEN. Om de gebouwen heen ziet men hier en daar verschillende buitendécors In aanbouw. idden uit het hart van Berlijn, de een gewoon langwerpig gebouwtje, doch film verraden. Het gebouwtje stamt uit „Potsdammer Bahnhof", brengt met eenj zeer fantastischen inhoud. Hier 1912. Het was hier, dat men den eersten „Stadtbahn" u in minder dan hangen netjes rij aan rij circa 10.000 cos- steen voor deze filmstad legde; uit piëteit een half uur naar een vredig voorstadje, tuums. Oude smerige soldatenjassen naast heeft men het laten staan. Tusschen de steehet Ufa filmparadijs Neu-Babelsberg. Hier, moderne heerencostuums, duizenden dames- nen kolossen van heden ten dage maakt het onder den rook van de wereldstad — Berlijn en heerenhoeden uit alle tijdperken, honder- denzelfden indruk als het beroemde kleine is n.1. even koud en onromantisch als alle den schoenen — enfin, teveel om op te Trinity-kerkje tusschen de wolkenkrabbers andere millioenensteden der wereld — ge- sommen. Buiten gekomen staan wij tegen- van New-York. Veertien gebouwen omringen dit kleine beuren de moderne wonderen, ontstaan de over een klein oud ateliertje, waarvan de millioenen meters filmband, waarvan luttele vele glazen ramen de periode der stomme atelier; het zijn de loodsen waarin de costuums, decors enz. zijn geborgen, benevens strecken in staat zijn duizenden en nogmaals de werkplaatsen der meubelmakers, smeden duizenden menschen, van alle rangen en en andere werklieden. Hier werken dagelijks standen, avond aan avond in ademlooze circa vijfhonderd werklieden aan alles wat betoovering te houden. Hier staan wij aan nu eenmaal bij een filmopname behoort. In de poort van de Ufa-Film-Ateliers, de poort een hoek staan een paar beelden. Hé, die die reeds vele film-enthousiasten met een komen ons zoo bekend voor. Och, natuurvreugdeblos op het gelaat en popelend hart lijk, wij herinneren het ons reeds. Ze dienpasseerden, in de hoop, dat een proefopname den voor de klok in de Emil Jannings-film hun de kans voor het leven zou bieden. „De blauwe Engel". Nu wachten ze hier op Maar helaas, velen voelen zich geroepen, een volgende gelegenheid. studio. De deur is gesloten, een bordje op de deur maant ons tot stilte. Hier, in dit atelier, heerscht regisseur Wolfram Junghanns, de man, die ons reeds zoo menige mooie cultuur-film schonk. Wij treden eenige oogenblikken bij hem binnen en wanen ons in een dierentuin. Alleen de sterke schijnwerpers en de vele opname-apparaten verraden ons, dat wij ons in een filmstudio bevinden. Vol liefde vertelt .Junghanns ons van zijn filmsterren, de dieren. Daar is Ali, Wolfi.en Lorchen, een mooie poes, die met duiven in één kooi zit. Er is geen dressuur, alleen maar vriendschap. En dan is er vooral Philipp, de snoek, die juist voor de lens optreedt. Wolfram Junghanns vertelde ons het volgende van dezen zoetwater-roover. „Wij hebben hem altijd Philipp genoemd, den jongen snoek, die precies anderhalf jaar geleden uit de kuit is gekomen. Reeds bij zjjn geboorte, waarbij ik om zoo te zeggen tegenwoordig was, doopte ik hem Philipp. U moet namelijk weten, dat ik al mijn dieren namen geef en de meeste luisteren dan ook naar deze namen als ik ze roep. De motor van het opname-toestel zong een lied aan Philipp's wieg. Hij werd tegen het middaguur geboren, mijn assistente had twee dagen op dit oogenblik gewacht. Eindelijk kwam hij te voorschijn. Hij leek precies een komma.
Neen, mooi was hij niet. Reeds toen werd deze om zoo te zeggen geboren filmster opgenomen. En wel voor de Ufa Cultuur-film ,,Het geheim van het ei". Weliswaar was dit slechts een figurantenrol, hij speelde deze echter zoo goed, dat de Ufa aan snoek Philipp direct een voordeelig contract aanbood. En nog wel met kost en inwoning. Thans is mijn acteur 41 centimeter lang en bezit, zooals u ziet, een schitterend figuur. Alleen zijn breede snuit heeft een onvriendelijke uitdrukking. Hij heeft een schitterende gelaatsmimiek voor intriganten-rollen. En in deze hoedanigheid nam hij de hoofdrol op zich in de cultuur-film „Geheimnisvolles Leben in Tümpel und Teich". U ziet, het decor waarin hij zich beweegt is een mooi aquarium, waarin de camera hem doorloopend bespiedt. Ik neem hem op met een langzaam werkend apparaat." Inderdaad zagen wij het en we waren vol bewondering voor dezen energieken man, die met zooveel toewijding van zjjn „sterren" weet te vertellen en zooveel waardevols op den filmband heeft weten vast te leggen. Het speet ons oprecht, dat de tijd ons niet toeliet langer in de cultuurafdeelihg te vertoeven. Maar de tijding dat Lilian Harvey zooeven te Neu-Babelsberg gearriveerd was, om de eerste opname van de Wil-5 _
helm Thiele-film der Ufa „Zwei Herzen und ein Slag" te spelen, deed ons snel naar het Süd-Atelier oversteken. Eerst willen wij u echter iets vertellen over deze enorme opname-hallen, waarin de groote specltoonfilms worden vervaardigd. De groote hall is in een I-vorm gebouwd, achtduizend vierkante meter groot en omgeven door vijftig kleedkamers. Tevens zijn er nog vertrekken voor regisseurs en architecten. Dit atelier is in 1926 gebouwd onder leiding van architect Stahl-Urach. In 1929 bouwde men onder leiding van architect Otto Kohts vier nieuwe toonfilmopnamehallen, die in kruisvorm liggen en samen een oppervlakte van 3500 vierkante meter beslaan. Honderdtien kleedkamers staan den filmartisten ter beschikking. Daar er in de toonhallen geen ramen aangebracht zijn, is er een speciaal luchtververschingsapparaat, hetgeen op zichzelf reeds een wonder der techniek is. Vijf showrooms stellen de productieleiders in staat het opgenomen materiaal direct aan een proef te onderwerpen. Vijf milliocn meter filmband gebruikt jaarlijks de kleine copiëerinrichting, die op het Neu-Babelsberger terrein is opgericht en die het opgenomen negatief-materiaal in een minimum van tijd in draaibaar positief verwerkt.

Ik weet niet, hoe het kwatn, maar dien avond deed het verlichte Monte Carlo, zooals ik het uit het raam van mijn hotelkamer zag liggen als een bijna gesloten cirkel van licht, mij denken aan het valsche, gele, loerende oog van een roofdier, en ik zei dit tegen mijn vriend, den internationalen detective, die steeds de Azuren Kust afjoeg naar internationale misdadigers. Hij glimlachte eenigszins spottend bij mijn opmerking. „Is het dan eigenlijk iets anders dan een roofdier?" vroeg hij. „Ik ken geen stad, die ik mèèr veracht, mèèr haat, dan Monte Carlo. Honderden menschen heeft zij met haar vervloekte speeltafels vermoord, in den dood gejaagd, honderden, neen duizenden, geruïneerd en mèt hun vrouw en kinderen ongelukkig gemaakt, terwijl het aantal van hen, die door haar tot misdaad zijn gekomen, niet te benaderen is. Jou doet de stad denken aan een roofdier, doch mij zweeft, als ik äan haar denk, steeds het beeld voot oogen van een mooie, maar intens slechte vrouw, die ik heb gekend. Die lachte en lonkte óók altijd — net als Monte Carlo; die beloofde óók koeien met gouden horens om nimmer haar belofte gestand te doen — net als Monte Carlo; die was óók altijd bezig iemand in zijn ongeluk te storten — net als Monte Carlo." Hij zweeg, en ik knikte nadenkend. Ik had in Monte Carlo heel wat gehoord en gezien — óók dingen, die nooit in de couranten kwamen. „Heb ik je nooit dat geval verteld van madame Sjabot?" vroeg hij na eenige oogenblikken. „Neen," antwoordde ik. „Wat was dat dan?" „Hé," zei hij nadenkend, „heb ik je dat nooit verteld? Dat begrijp ik niet, want ik zou nooit mooier bewijs kunnen vinden voor hetgeen ik zooeven zei. Bovendien blijkt er zoo schitterend uit, volgens welke methoden monsieur Robert, van de Parijsche Sureté, werkt. Je hebt monsieur Robert toch wel eens ontmoet ?" „Meer dan eens," antwoordde ik. „En al zou dat niet zoo zijn, dan zou ik hem toch voldoende kennen uit hetgeen jij allemaal van je held, je „groote voorbeeld", zooais je hem altijd noemt, hebt verteld. — Maar wat was dat geval van madame Sjabot?" vroeg ik. „Dat ik je dat nooit verteld heb," zei hij weer. En toen begon hij:

Detail van het toonfilm-atelier met de installatie voor de luchtverversching Wilt gij een voorbeeld hebben hoeveel materiaal men in een tijdsverloop van twaalf maanden in deze ateliers verwerkt? Welnu, men gebruikte voor de Ufaproductie in het afgeloopen jaar: 120.000 vierkante meter jute, 110.000 vierkante meter triplex hout, 50.000 vierkante meter boomstammen, 300.000 meter latten en 700.000 pond gips. Waar deze enorme hoeveelheden materiaal blijven, zal u duidelijk worden, als u, voordat wij het Süd-atelier betreden, even achter de opnamehallen, de straat gaat bekijken, die daar ter gelegenheid van de opnamen voor „Het Congres danst" is opgebouwd. Ziezoo, nu ligt zij vóór ons. In een echte oud-Weensche trouwhartigheid, zou men bijna zeggen, met haar patriciërshuizen en paleizen: men denkt telkens, dar zich achter de vensterruiten een eerwaardig mooi vrouwengelaat zal vertoonen, of dat de winkeldeur zich zal openen. Welnu, deze straat is opgebouwd uit triplex, jute en gips en zij is slechts een klein onderdeel van de bouwwerken, welke zich op het vierhonderdvijftigduizend vierkante meter groote opname-terrein van Neu-Babelsberg bevinden. In de verte zien we nog den ouden burcht uit ,,De Kroniek van Grieshuus", en, voor ons, als een scherp contrast met het oude Weenen, een stuk imitatie Berlijnsche Hochbahn, gebruikt voor de opname van „Mijn vrouw de avonturierster". Verderop ligt nog een deel van de mooie straat uit de film „Asphalt".
„Heeft het vannacht gevroren?" vragen we verwonderd, als we voorbij een vijvertje komen, dat bedekt is met een glinsterende ijskorst. Maar neen, ook dit ijs blijkt filmijs te zijn; de vijver bestaat uit een blauw-wit geschilderde cementlaag, omgeven door imitatie-sneeuw. Wat is hier decor, wat werkelijkheid? Maar haasten we ons naar binnen, om nog even Lilian Harvey de hand te drukken. In het Süd-atelier heerscht een geweldige bedrijvigheid. Operateurs, mannen van de verlichting, musici en figuranten, allen krioelen door elkaar in de mooie hotelkamers, die voor de Lilian Harvey-film „Zwei Herzen und ein Schlag" zijn opgebouwd. Wie in deze film de mannelijke hoofdrol zal spelen, weet Wilhelm Thiele, die regie voert en in zijn vorige film „Drei von der Tankstelle" bewees een meester in zijn vak te zijn, ons nog niet te vertellen. Achter een schijnwerper, een beetje buiten het gewoel, zit een slank persoontje. Het teere hoofdje is omlijst met een schat van prachtig blond haar. Het is Lilian, nóg liever en nóg mooier dan op het witte doek. Even vindt zij tijd om ons de hand te drukken en te vertellen, dat zij binnenkort een bezoek aan ons land hoopt te brengen. Wanneer? Ja, wij hebben heusch plechtig moeten beloven dit nog niet te verraden. Dit korte onderhoud vormde echter een waardig slot van den leerzamen dag, dien wij in de moderne sprookjeswereld te NeuBabelsberg hebben doorgebracht.
amon Novarro zal voor de Mata Hari-film, die door de MetroGoldwyn-Mayer-Filmmaatschappij te Hollywood wordt vervaardigd, en waarin Greta Garbo de titelrol vervult, in een ouderwetsche vliegmachine op het vliegveld Bourget moeten dalen. Men is thans bezig het opname-terrein te Hollywood als vliegveld uit te rusten. De beide broeders Barrymore (John en Lionel) zullen voor het eerst van hun leven samen in één film optreden. Deze rolprent zal getiteld zijn: „Arsene Lupin". Te Berlijn is de beroemde filmjournalist Dr. Kurt Mühsam gestorven. Tom Mix zal dit seizoen eenige films voor de Universal Filmmaatschappij vervaardigen. De sprekende Tom zal ook in ons land welkom zijn! Ramon Novarro vierde dezer dagen zijn tienjarig filmjubileum. Het aantal brieven dat hü in deze jaren van filmenthousiasten ontving, is ontelbaar. Ernst Deutsch, de beroemde Duitsche acteur, die verleden jaar een tournee door ons land maakte, koestert toonfilmplannen. Het staat nog niet vast bij welke maatschappij hij zal optreden. De bekende Amerikaansche regisseur Fred Niblo zal eenige films in de Elstree Studios bij Londen gaan vervaardigen. Men geeft in Engeland den moed niet op, eindelijk eens een goede toonfilm te vervaardigen. De Duitsche regisseur Paul Ludwig Stein, die met Pola Negri in Amerika een toonfilm heeft vervaardigd, is thans weer naar Europa onderweg. Jack Buchanan, de bekende Engelsche filmacteur, die met Jeannette Mc Donald in de Paramountfilm „Monte Carlo" optrad, zal met Constance Bennet een film voor de R.K.O. Pathé vervaardigen. Zijn gage bedraagt 5000 dollar per week. De Duitsche filmster Dita Parlo, die zich in Amerika bevindt, zal samen met Joseph Schildkraut een tooneeltournée door de Nieuwe Wereld maken. Lien Deijers, onze beroemde landgenoote, zal binnenkort met den bekenden Ufaregisseur en productieleider Alfred Zeisier in het huwelijk treden. Wij wenschen onze Lien veel geluk.

„Nou, madame Sjabot was een oude dame, die inwoonde bij een zekeren monsieur Louis, in de Rue de Ciel te Monte Carlo. Het huis was te groot voor hem — h:j was weduwnaar — en daarom had hij er een étage van verhuurd aan madame Sjabot, die een aardig kapitaaltje had vergaard gedurende de meer dan vijf en twintig jaar, dat zij in Marseille een burgerrestaurant had gehouden. Nooit voelde zij zich gelukkiger dan wanneer zij zich met haar armbanden, ringen, broches enzoovoort kon tooien — en als zij ze niet droeg, stonden ze in een ijzeren kistje bij haar bed of rustbank, zoodat ze er steeds naar kon liggen kijken en ze af en toe in haar hand nemen. EEN DAG DAME" GEZELSCHAP BRAAKENSIEK
De Residentie is weer een tooneelgezelschap rijker geworden: Het gezelschap van Charles Braakensiek zal permanent het „Excelsior Theater" bespelen. Of de kennismaking met dit nieuwe gezelschap gunstig zal uitvallen, moeten wij afwachten; de heer Braakensiek is zoo verstandig geweest van te voren geen repertoire aan te kondigen zoodat wij in dit opzicht nooit teleurgesteld kunnen worden. Zeker is echter, dat weer vele acteurs en actrices, die zonder emplooi waren, een verbintenis kunnen krijgen en daarvoor moeten wij den heer Braakensiek dankbaar zijn, want om in deze tijden een ongesubsidieerd gezelschap te beginnen, is zeker een durf. Geopend werd met het Amerikaansche blijspel (klucht was juister geweest en in dien geest werd het ook gespeeld) „Een dag Dame". Het gepeven is niet nieuw en doet ons kennismaken met een vrijgezel, die dik in de schulden zit en zijn voogd heeft voorgespiegeld, getrouwd te zijn met een zeer verkwistend vrouwtje. De voogd zal hem nu komen bezoeken om haar eens onder handen te nemen, dus moet er binnen
het half uur een vrouw gevonden worden. Dit brengt vele moeilijkheden mede, doch hij slaagt er in en krijgt er zelfs, dank zij zijn hulpvaardigen butler, twee. Men heeft met veel toewijding g-espeeld en wanneer men ingespeeld is, zullen ook de naams- en persoonsverwisselingen wel niet meer voorkomen. Charles Braakensiek als de butler, W. Grelinger als de vrijgezel, en Dolly Bouwmeester als zijn pseudo-vrouw vertolkt?n met Ellen Durieux (de trouwlustige tante) en Louis Poolman (de voogd) de hoofdrollen en speelden met veel vitaliteit. Waarom maakte Ellen Durieux aan het einde van het eerste bedrijf echter zoo'n caricatuur van zichzelf? Dat was toch bij haar aardige vertolking overbodig! Wanneer het de bedoeling van den heer Braakensiek is geweest om het publiek op den eersten avond in een vroolijke stemming te brengen, dan mag hij gerust zeggen, zijn doel te hebben bereikt. Zij echter, die in de toon^elspeelkunst iets verheveners zoeken, wachten op beter. Er waren bloemen en kransen ter verwelkoming!

Monsieur Louis moest hier vaak aan denken, en verscheidene keeren wees hij madame Sjabot er op, dat het niet zonder gevaar was, dat zij haar kostbaarheden op dergelijke wijze in huis bewaarde. „O, niemand weet het," antwoordde zij dan, „alleen Marie, en die kan ik volkomen vertrouwen. Wie zou er nu op de gedachte komen, om een oude vrouw als ik te bestelen ? Bovendien ben ik heusch wel in staat mij te verdedigen, al was het alleen maar door hard om hulp te schreeuwen. En," voegde zij er aan toe, „nu heb ik er wat aan, hetgeen niet het geval zou zijn als ik ze naar de bank liet brengen. Doch wat gaat het u eigenlijk aan, monsieur Louis? U hoeft zich niet met mijn zaken te bemoeien! Ik ben geen kind, al ben 'ik ongelukkig I" Je ziet, de oude dame viel niet mee, en ze zouden misschien wel ruzie hebben gekregen, als monsieur Louis niet had geweten, dat zij het niet zoo kwaad meende en hij er zich, omdat zij ongelukkig was, niet voor had gewacht kwaad op haar te worden. Enfin — het resultaat was, dat zij op zekeren avond werd gevonden met ingeslagen schedel. Ze was vermoord, en haar juweelen waren verdwenen. Het kistje had men laten staan. Het raam stond open. Op een afvoerbuis van de goot vond men vlak bij het raam een paar krassen, die aantoonden, hoe de dader binnen was gekomen. Overigens werden er maar weinig sporen aangetroffen, en de kamer was niet overhoop gehaald, ofschoon men uit een la van de secretaire, die bij de deur stond, tien gouden louis had weggenomen, die de oude dame daar al jarenlang in een zakdoek geknoopt als een kostbaren schat had
bewaard. Een bundel bankpapier ter waarde van tienduizend francs had men niet aangeroerd. Nergens waren vingerafdrukken op te ontdekken. Ik déjeuneerde dien morgen juist in het Hotel de Luxe met monsieur Robert, toen de commissaris van politie van Monte Carlo werd aangediend. Hij moest monsieur Robert iets vragen over iemand, die met den moord op madame Sjabot niets te maken had, en toen hij het zijne wist, vertelde hij ons van den moord in de Rue de Ciel. Je weet, dat de politie gewoon is in den vorm van processenverbaal te denken, en toen de goeie man eenmaal los gekomen was, wist hij van geen ophouden en gaf ons een compleet relaas van het gebeurde, zonder echter ook maar met één woord over bewijzen te reppen. „We hebben vanmorgen een jongeman gearresteerd, een zekeren Hernant, den beminde van Marie, het meisje van madame Sjabot," besloot hij. „We vonden slechts weinig geld op hem, maar in zijn koffer in het hotel, waar hij kellner is, ontdekten wij een ouderwetsch horloge, dat aan de doode dame behoorde en dat hij volgens zijn beweren al lang geleden van Marie had gekregen, die het ten geschenke zou hebben ontvangen van madame Sjabot. De zaak is zoo duidelijk als wat." Hij vertelde ons nog verschillende bijzonderheden van monsieur Louis, den eigenaar van het huis, van madame Sjabot, enzoovoort, tot monsieur Robert hem in de rede viel en vroeg: „Hebt u geen vingerafdrukken gevonden ?" „Neen," antwoordde de commissaris. „En die jongeman, die Hernam, wat is dat voor een type ?" „O, die heeft het buskruit niet uitgevonden," antwoordde de commissaris

Uw meening over Hernant kan nooit juist zijn; hij kan niet zoo sloom zijn als u denktI Integendeel: het moet een geraffineerde misdadiger zijn, of — u hebt den verkeerde gearresteerd." Die redeneering was zeer logisch, maar de commissaris van politie was er niets mee ingenomen; veeleer scheen hij de conclusies van monsieur Robert te betreuren, omdat zij zijn eigen redeneering te niet deden. „We moeten werken met hetgeen we vinden," zei hij. „We hebben zeer nauwkeurig naar vingerafdrukken gezocht, overal, waar we maar konden vermoeden ze te zullen vinden, zelfs op de pooten van de tafel, en op het tien-francs fiche van het Casino, dat op den grond bij de secretaire lag. We mogen dan niet zoo schrander zijn als de beeren van de Parijsche Süreté, maar we doen onze zaken grondig." Dat was een steek op monsieur Robert, want het was ongeveer een pa^r maanden geleden, dat de politie in Parijs een grooten flater had begaan, doordat zij. in een kamer, waar een moord was gebeurd, het mes met had orltdekt, waarmee het slachtoffer den hals was afgesneden. Pas veertien dagen later werd dit mes, waarop vingerafdrukken van den dader stonden, gevonden in de matras van het bed, waarop de vermoorde had gelegen. In dien tijd had de dader echter gelegenheid gehad naar het buitenland te vluchten. Nu had monsieur Robert wel is waar met dit geval niets uitstaande gehad, maar hij voelde zich toch gepikeerd. »Ja. ja," zei hij daarom min of meer hatelijk, „jullie zijn zèèr grondig. Dat merk ik. Jullie vinden een tien-francs fiche van het Casino op den grond en dan arresteeren jullie een inwoner van Monte Carlo, en nog wel een kellner, hoewel jullie weten, dat inwoners van Monte Carlo, die niet van hun geld leven, zooals men dat noemt, niet in het Casino mogen komen. Sjabot verwijderd, maar de kamer verkeerde nog in precies denzelfden staat als toen de misd&ad werd ontdekt. Het was een vroolijk, gezellig vertrek op de eerste verdieping, met één raam, waarvoor zich een breede vensterbank bevond. Monsieur Robert ging direct naar het raam en inspecteerde de afvoerbuis, waarlangs de moordenaar naar boven moest zijn geklommen. Toen ging hij naar het midden van de kamer, waar hij met zijn handen op zijn rug bleef staan. Tegenover het raam stond een rustbed, en bij het raam een leunstoel, waarin de ongelukkige vrouw had gezeten toen zij werd overvallen. Er stonden verschillende kleine meubelstukken in het vertrek, onder andere een wankel tafeltje met een vaas bloemen. Op een ander tafeltje stond het juweelenkistje — leeg. Nadat monsieur Robert al de voorwerpen afzonderlijk had bekeken, vroeg hij, of Marie, het meisje, geroepen kon worden. Zoodra de gedienstige binnenkwam, kreeg ik geen erg gunstigen indruk van haar. Ze had een aardig gezichtje, maar ze leek me erg brutaal en onbeduidend, — precies het werktuig, waarvan een misdadiger zich graag zou willen bedienen. Verwijder de oorzaak van een glimmende huid. Een glimmende, vette huid is het gevolg van huidporiën, die verstopt zijn door de onzuiverheden, welke 2e voortdurend moeten afscheiden. De onzuiverheden uit het lichaam worden o.a. ook door de huidporiën verwijderd. Doch het is niet noodig, dat deze natuurlijke functie een goede huid zou moeten bederven. Om dit te voorkomen behoeft U slethts telkens wanneer ge Uw gezicht wascht, een theelepel Radox door het water te mengen. Radox maakt zuurstof vrij. Deze zuurstof dringt door de huidporiën heen, reinigt deze grondig en verwijdert alle opgehoopte onzuiverheden. Pas deze methode twee- of driemaal daags toe, dan zal Uw teint voortaan gezond, frisch en zacht zijn, zonder een spoor van vet. Klaarblijkelijk was hij nog hevig onder den indruk van de tragedie, die zich den vorigen avond in zijn woning had afgespeeld. Hij vertelde alles wat hij wist. Hij had nooit gehoord, dat madame Sjabot een horloge aan Marie had gegeven, ofschoon het, volgens zijn eigen zeggen, zeer goed mogelijk was, dat madame het hem niet had verteld. Hoewel hij goed met de oude dame kon opschieten en hij vaak een praatje bij haar ging maken, zou een dergelijke kleinigheid als het weggeven van een horloge niet zoo gauw tusschen hen ter sprake zijn gekomen. „U hebt nooit gezien of gehoord, dat zij een fiche van tien francs van het Casino in haar bezit had ?" vroeg monsieur Robert. Monsieur Louis was zeer verrast door deze vraag: de politie had hem heelemaal niet verteld, dat er een fiche' was gevonden. Neen, hij had nooit gezien, dat zij er een had, en ze zou er ook wel geen gehad hebben, evenmin als iemand anders in zijn huis. Hierna namen wij afscheid van hem om een bezoek te brengen aan Hernant, die op het politiebureau in voorarrest zat. Het was een bleeke jongen, met fletse, rustelooze oogen. Hij maakte geen bijster günstigen indruk op me, maar ik begreep, dat het verkeerd zou zijn geweest om hierop af te gaan. Hij vertelde ons bijna woordelijk wat Marie had verteld. Hij zei, dat hij nog nooit een vlieg kwaad had gedaan, dat zijn patroon niets anders dan goed van hem kon zeggen en dat hij van plan was om spoedig met Marie te gaan trouwen. En zou nu iemand, die trouwplannen koestert, een dergehjken moord kunnen bedrijven ? Nooit was hij, volgens zijn zeggen, in het Casino geweest. Hij gaf onomwonden toe, dat het niet moeilijk zou

zijn geweest voor hem om in het hotel, waar hij kellner was, een fiche van het Casino te bemachtigen, maar hij verklaarde dat hij er nog nooit een had gehad. Ja, het horloge, dat was het eenige dat tegen hem pleitte, maar hij had het eerlijk van Marie gekregen. Hij kon het niet bewijzen, omdat madame Sjabot dood was, doch het was de waarheid. Toen, half tegen zijn zin, maar toch klaarblijkelijk naar waarheid, vertelde hij te gelooven, of althans het sterke vermoeden te hebben, dat Marie hem niet trouw was; dat zij, behalve hem, nóg „een jongeman" had. Maar wie dat was, kon hij niet zeggen; hij vermoedde het slechts door een uitlating, die zij zich had laten ontvallen. Dat was hetgeen hij ons uit eigenv vrije beweging zeggen wilde, en hetgeen hij ons wist mede te deelen in antwoord op onze vragen. Toen hij weer naai zijn cel was teruggebracht, wendde de commissaris zich tot monsieur Robert. „Nu heeft u al de voornaamste personen gesproken, die bij het drama zijn betrokken," zei hij, „en hier hebt u een teekening van de kamer, waarop de ligging van het lichaam is aangegegeven, zooals men het heeft gevonden. Wat is nu uw meening?" „Ik heb nog geen meening," antwoordde monsieur Robert, „maar uit hetgeen ik heb gezien en gehoord, meen ik te mogen afleiden, dat die man zal worden veroordeeld. In Monte Carlo wordt niemand meer ter dood gebracht, zoodat het dus niet onmogelijk is, dat hij na eenigen tijd zijn vrijheid zal terugkrijgen." Een zonderlinge uitlating voor een detective. Yvonne, een schil ersmodel van Montmartre, maak. op een artistenfuif kennis met Ar iré, een student uit de provincie. Voor hei eerst van haar leven wordt zij werkelijk vet iefd en ze doet alles om de herinnering aai haar vroeger leven te vergeten. André, die verloofc is met een meisje uit zijn geboorteplaats, is in voortdurenden tweestrijd tusschen zijn iefde van de charmante Parijsche schooi jeeid en zijn belofte aan zijn familie. Als 1 j betreurt, op welk een luxueuse wijze zij ewend is te leven, geeft Yvonne haar woi ng in Parijs op en betrekt een eenvoudige nlla in een van de voorsteden. Zij probee zich te gedragen zooals zij weet, dat Anc] :é dit zal verlangen, Deze kan evenwel niet \ irgeten, wat vroeger in haar leven gepassee d is en hij vertelt Yvonne, dat hij haar übet verlaten. Op het terras van ei i café krijgt André de laatste avondeditie n handen en leest daarin, dat Yvonne's bes e vriendin, die door haar verloofde verlaten was, zelfmoord heeft gepleegd. Overtuigd, dal hij Yvonne eveneens tot wanhoop gebrajht heeft, spoedt hij zich naar haar wonin ^•m haar te vertellen, dat hij zijn carriwe en zijn familierelaties voor haar zal opgeven. Maar Yvonne wil deze opoffering niet van hem aanvaarden. Zij wacht, tot hij in een stoel bij het vuur ingedommeld is, laat een briefje voor hem achter en gaat terug naar het groote Parijs, waar zij gewend is een leven van luxe te leiden

ALS HET LEVEN EEN MISDAAD WORDT DE PARIJSCHE MOORDENAAR POULAILLER. Zijn loopbaan en verschrikkelijk einde. Het is zeer de vraag, of in de annalen der Fransche politie de naam gevonden kan worden van een misdadiger, die wreeder en beruchter was dan Poulailler, de welopgevoede straatroover en moordenaar, die in het begin van de zeventiende eeuw jarenlang met zijn bende een waar schrikbewind over Parijs heeft uitgeoefend. Evenzeer is het echter de vraag, of één andere misdadiger zoo vreeselijk voor zijn wandaden heeft geboet als hij. Door gebrek aan officieele bescheiden en de afwezigheid van een journalistieke reportage, zooals wij die tegenwoordig kennen, is ons van zijn eerste optreden weinig bekend. Wij weten slechts, dat zijn vader een arm, maar eerzaam winkelier was, die zijn zoon een goede opvoeding wilde geven in de hoop, dat deze hierdoor een behoorlijke betrekking zou krijgen aan een der ministeries. Om over boeken gebogen te zitten, was echter Poulaillers aanleg niet. Hij prefereerde den omgang met slechte vrienden en hield liever braspartijen dan te studeeren. Van den beroemden Franschen misdadiger Cartouche beweert men wel eens, dat hij begonnen zou zijn met het stelen van een paar spelden. Poulailler heeft hem, wat dat betreft, nagevolgd. Ook hij begon met een kleinigheid en stal, toen hij op een avond geen geld had om uit te gaan, een paar francs. Hij werd echter ontdekt en ontvluchtte de ouderlijke woning om, zooals hij later zelf getuigde, „willens en wetens misdadiger te worden". Voor een Parij zenaar was het in die dagen niet moeilijk, een dergelijk voornemen ten uitvoer te brengen ; het was zelfs niet eens moeilijk, om er succes mee te hebben en ongestraft te blijven. De Fransche politie was er namelijk meer op uit politieke misdadigers te vangen en lieden, die niets anders op hun geweten hadden, dan dat zij met de overheid van meening durfden te verschillen, achter de tralies te zetten, dan de eerzame burgers tegen het geboefte te beschermen, en te beletten, dat de boulevards des avonds een ideaal jachtterrein vormden voor roovers en moordenaars, zooals toen inderdaad het geval was. Ook Poulailler is zijn loopbaan op de boulevards begonnen. Voor zoover wij kunnen nagaan, was zijn eerste misdaad het berooven van een ambtenaar van een der ministeries, die toevallig verscheidene maanden salaris tegelijk had ontvangen. Hoe Poulailler hier achter was gekomen, is niet bekend, maar we weten, dat hij den man bestal en — doodde. Poulailler zou men een voorlooper kunnen noemen der huidige ,,gun-men" in Chicago, die bij het geringste gevaar of den minsten weerstand van hun slachtoffers geen oogenblik aarzelen om te schieten en in geen enkel opzicht eerbied voor een menschenleven hebben. De bejaarde beambte schijnt niet vlug genoeg geweest te zijn met het voor den dag brengen van zijn portefeuille. Poulailler stak hem daarom een dolk in liet hart, maakte zich van zijn geld meester en
verdween in den nacht zonder een spoor achter te laten. Natuurlijk bet erkende het feit, een moord te hebben bedreven ook bij hem, evenals bij zoovele andere misdadigers, dat hij bereid was er meer te begaan. Per slot van rekening ■ kon hij slechts één keer ter d«od worden veroordeeld en een reeks moorden beteekende geen erger lot dan één — indien hij ooit gevat werd. . Poulailler rekende er echter niet op, dat hij gevat zou worden. En dit geschiedde dan ook voorloopig niet, want hij was buitengewoon handig en slaagde er steeds in, de politie te misleiden. Hij omringde zich met een bende even wreede en geraffineerde schurken als hij zelf was, roofde en moordde ongestraft en verteerde de opbrengst van zijn afschuwelijk bestaan met allerlei slemp- en braspartijen. Naar men beweerde, was Poulailler een knappe jongeman, die zich zeer beminnelijk wist voor te doen. Het verwondert daarom niet, dat hij zich weldra, vooral omdat hij steeds over veel geld beschikte, omringd zag door een schare mooie vrouwen uit de onderwereld, van wie velen werkelijk verliefd waren op den zwierigen bandiet, wiens handen dropen van het bloed, doch die een groote bekoring uitoefende door zijn charmante manieren en de sfeer van geheimzinnigheid, die wel noodzakelijk moest uitgaan van een man, wiens naam door heel Parijs slechts met ontzag en vrees werd genoemd en op wiens hoofd een belooning stond van duizenden francs ! De misdaden van Poulailler werden zóó talrijk en zóó wreed, dat de autoriteiten alles in het werk stelden om hem te arresteeren, en het valt gemakkelijk te begrijpen, dat het uitloven van ongehoord groote belooningen voor velen van zijn trawanten een verleiding beteekende, waartegen zij nauwelijks bestand waren. Maar Poulailler oefende een verschrikkelijke discipline over zijn bende uit en deinsde ook tegenover zijn makkers nergens voor terug als het er op aankwam. Toch was er onder zijn handlangers één, die het wagen durfde een verradersrol te spelen. De wraak, die Poulailler nam, was echter ontzettend ! De rooverhoofdman hoorde van zijn spionnen, dat men hem aan de politie wilde overleveren en besloot den trouwelooze zoodanig te straffen, dat het een afschrikwekkend voorbeeld zou worden voor alle anderen. Hij deed alsof hij onkundig was van het gevaar, dat hem bedreigd had, en lokte zijn slachtoffer in een huis, waarin hij vaak een schuilplaats zocht. Hier overviel hij den man, bond hem en sleepte hem naar den kelder. Het lot, dat den verrader te wachten stond, was hetzelfde, dat de ontrouwe vriend uit Edgar Allan Poe's ,,Het vat Amontillado" onderging. Poulailler stuurde om een metselaar en liet zijn slachtoffer levend in een hoek van den kelder inmetselen. Daarop schreef hij met zijn vinger in de natte specie van den muur: ,,Hier staat iemand, die Poulailler wilde verraden". Het gerucht van deze verschrikkelijke wraakneming was natuurlijk spoedig door heel Parijs bekend; er was echter niemand, — 18 -
die het wilde gelooven. Maar de nieuwsgierige eigenaar van het huis liet den muur afbreken en bracht het geraamte van Poulaillers medeplichtige aan het licht. De half vergane kleeren hingen nog om het skelet van den man ! Het is ondoenlijk hier een volledige opsomming te geven van Poulaillers misdaden. Liever vertellen wij, hoe hij tenslotte in handen der autoriteiten is gevallen. Het was een vrouw, die hem verraadde. Gedurende korten tijd had Poulailler het hof gemaakt aan Mile Wilhelmina de Kirberzen," maar ongestadig als hij was, had hij haar spoedig verlaten. Hierdoor verkeerde haar liefde in haat en zij besloot zich op hem te wreken. Zi] noodigde hem op een afscheidsdiner, en nauwelijks hadden zij van den wijn gedronken, dien Wilhelmina had laten komen, of Poulailler zag, hoe er een verschrikkelijke uitdrukking op haar gezicht verscheen. ,,Wat is ermet jou?" riep hij ontdaan. „Niets ; alleen voel ik me niet meer zoo gelukkig sinds jij me hebt verlaten. Ik kan er niets aan doen, dat ik van je houd, en ik kan het niet verdragen, dat ie mij verloochent voor een ander. Je bent ten doode opgeschreven, maar ik zal je niet overleven." Poulailler sprong op. ,,Je hebt me vergeven !" schreeuwde hij. Maar de vrouw schudde haar hoofd. ,,Neen. Er was vergif in mijn wijn, maar niet in den jouwen. Ik sterf, mijn geliefde, maar jij ... ." Zij was nog niet uitgesproken, toen er op de deur gebonsd werd en de politie het vertrek binnendrong. Eer de rooverhoofdman een wapen had kunnen grijpen, was hij overmand en geboeid. Hij werd weggebracht, maar niet dan nadat men hem had toegestaan 'n blik te werpen op het verstarde gezicht van Wilhelmina, die zich nimmer op geraffineerder wijze had kunnen wreken, want het lot, dat Poulailler te wachten stond, was in waarheid allerverschrikkelijkst. Bij zijn verhoor bekende hij, dat honderdvijftig mannen en vrouwen door hem of zijn bende waren vermoord. Tevergeefs trachtte hij eenige vermindering te krijgen van de straf, welke in dien tijd bepaald was voor misdadigers van zijn soort, door aan te bieden de namen van al zijn handlangers te noemen. Men lachte om zijn smeekbeden, daar men wel wist alles uit hem te zullen krijgen door hem te folteren. Niet minder dan vijf keer werd hij op de pijnbank gelegd en na iederen keer liet men hem geruimen tijd met rust, niet uit overwegingen van medelijden of menschelijkheid, doch om hem gelegenheid te geven, voor zoover mogelijk, te herstellen, opdat hij alle martelingen, tot de laatste toe, zou kunnen ondergaan. Eindelijk, toen er niets meer uit hem te halen was, werd hij op de Place de Grève in tegenwoordigheid van duizenden toeschouwers geradbraakt en toen men letterlijk alle beenderen van zijn lichaam had gebroken, werd hem niet, zooals anderen misdadigers, den genadeslag gegeven, die een einde zou hebben gemaakt aan zijn onnoemelijk lijden, doch men wierp hem levend in het vuur.

Wij willen daarmee niet zeggen, dat iedereen, die mooi is, daarvoor pijn moet lijden — o neenl Welk een martelkamer zou dan de aarde zijn, met zooveel mooie meisjesl Onze bedoeling is hier, aan te toonen, dat ieder, die zich op een of andere manier door een kunst-behandeling laat verfraaien, althans iets aan zijn uiterlijk laat aanbrengen of verwijderen, dat hij niet of teveel had, dit meestal niet zonder pijn of hinder bereikt. Men denke maar eens aan de gewoonte om de wenkbrauwen uit te tfekkenl Hoeveel pijn en opofferingen zullen

nu de film-actrices zich niet moeten getroosten? Zij, die altijd mooi, charmant en lieftallig moeten zijnl Wij zitten in den bioscoop en zeggen: „Wat een snoezig figuurtje heeft ze, hè?" of „Wat een beeldig haar heeft ze tochl" en denken er nooit over na, hoeveel dagelijksche gymnastiekoefeningen en vermageringskuren er noodig zijn geweest eer dat snoezige figuurtje de vereischte slankheid had; hoeveel zorg de actrice moest besteden aan die massa prachtig haar, om het zijnzijdeachtigen glans en volheid te geven I Dikwijls echter moet zij haar uiterlijk een of andere kunstbehandeling doen ondergaan, niet zoozeer om mooier te worden dan wel om meer fotogénique te zijn. Er zijn vele actrices, die in het gewone leven inderdaad op schoonheid mogen bogen, en wier beeld, op het witte doek gereproduceerd, dit toch niet voldoende duidelijk toont. Aan elk onderdeel van haar uiterlijk moet een filmster dubbel zooveel zorg besteden als een gewoon mensch. Om maar eens te beginnen met de oogen, de spiegels der ziel, die op het witte doek zoo duidelijk mogelijk moeten weergeven, wat er in die ziel omgaat. Op onze plaatjes ziet men Anita Page bij de behandeling van haar oogen, die tegenwoordig door de coquette, kleine, moderne hoeden dubbel aantrekkelijk moeten zijn. De oogen worden ingespoten met een of ander watertje, dat de eigenschap heeft, ze meer te doen schitteren. Gelukkig is het niet nadeelig voor de oogen, en voorkomt deze behandeling zelfs, dat ze pijn gaan doen in het licht van de verblindende lampen. Een badje van hamamelis kunnen defilmoogen ook niet ontberen, zoodat zij op geregelde tijden worden bewerkt met in dit goedje gedrenkte watten, die er een paar minuten lang op gelegd worden. Daarmee is het echter nog niet afgeloopenl Ook de wimpers moeten het ontgelden. Zij moeten lang zijn en gekruld en dicht geplant. De actrice, die van zichzelf dergelijke wimpers niet heeft, moet dus zorgen, dat zij ze • krijgt I Om de oogharen weliger te doen groeien, wordt er op de wortels van de oogharen, dus precies op het randje van de oogleden, met een fijn penseeltje een beetje vloeibare vaseline aangebracht. En om ze mooi omhoog gebogen te krijgen, worden ze met een „wimper-ijzer" gekruld I Hoe dikwijls het vaseline-penseeltje daarbij uitschiet en de oogen pijnlijk irriteert, hoe vaak de gekwelde filmster zich brandt met het wimper-ijzer... och, wat weet de bioscoopbezoeker daarvan? Wat weet die trouwens over het algemeen van de opofferingen en moeiten, die haar of zijn lievelingsactrice zich moet getroosten ? Dat een film-actrice verscheidene uren daags doorbrengt met het verzorgen van haar uiterlijk, is iets wat iedereen wel weet en velen beschouwen dit als ijdelheid en overdreven. coquetterie. Maar de filmster zelf weet maar al te goed, dat het haar dure plicht is om fantastische toeren te verrichten,
die haar „lijn" moeten behouden; het is heusch niet voor haar pleizier, dat zij zich laat masseeren, dat zij dit en dat moet doen om een mooi neusje te krijgen, en zus en zoo om een onderkin te voorkomen. Haar schoonheid is een onvoorwaardelijke factor voor haar beroep en zoo zij die moet missen of zien verminderen^ verliest zij haar bestaansmogelijkheid, althans, voor bepaalde rollen. Haar aantrekkelijk uiterlijk is immers als het ware de achterfrond, waartegen haar rol moet uitomen; het maakt, dat de toeschouwer meer wordt geboeid en vestigt duidelijker de aandacht op haar spel. Daarom is het „Wie mooi wil zijn, moet pijn lijden" zulk een harde waarheid voor de film-artisten I A. d. K.
(Vervolg van pa&na IS) „En wat denkt u van Marie?" vroeg hij. „Daar kan ik niets van zeggen," antwoordde monsieur Robert. „Ik voorspel alleen maar de toekomst van Hernant."; „U zoudt geld kunnen verdienen als waarzegger," merkte de commissaris op. „U spreekt met zooveel overtuiging." „Ik geloof ook, dat ik wel wat zou bereiken op dat gebied," antwoordde de ander, „te meer, daar ik alleen zou waarzeggen op grond van het karakter en de feiten. Ik zeg dan ook, dat Hernant zijn vrijheid wel zal herkrijgen, omdat hij volgens de feiten onschuldig is. Maar ik kan het niet bewijzen." „En u baseert uw overtuiging op ... ?" „Op het tien-francs fiche, en op Marie's tweeden „jongeman", in wiens bestaan ik stellig geloof." „Al weer dat fiche I" „Ja, al weer dat fiche — en dan nog andere dingen, die ik geloof te hebben ontdekt." „Wat bedoelt u?" „Dat kan* ik niet zeggen. Als ik het deed, zoudt u toch zeggen „O, dat is onzin!" en bovendien is spreken bij een geval als dit fataal. Muren hebben ooren, ideeën vleugels. Ik geloof, dat de moordenaar op dit oogenblik vrij in Monte Carlo rondwandelt; ik geloof, dat die klimmer-langs-afvoerbuizen en moordenaar-van-oude-dames denkt, dat hij veilig is, maar dat hij, op een gerucht, een gefluisterd woord, maatregelen zou nemen, die zouden beletten, dat wij hem ooit in handen krijgen. Doch dat wil ik doen, indien u er iets voor voelt: ik wil u Drammen leenen, van de Parijsche Süreté; zijn gezondheid is niet al te best en een verblijf in het zonnige Zuiden zal hem geen kwaad doen. Hij zal hier als gewoon particulier vertoeven — niemand kent hem hier, en indien hij succes heeft, zult u er de eer van hebben, want hij geeft niets om roem." Je kan begrijpen, dat de commissaris niet aarzelde om op dit aanbod in te gaan; het was te mooi en bovendien bracht het geen kosten mét zich mee, want Parijs en Monte Carlo hebben elkander vaak noodig en verkenen elkander dikwijls hulp zonder dat er ooit een franc voor wordt betaald. Zoo werd' dus afgesproken. Hierna hoorde ik geriymen tijd niets meer van het geval. Mijn werkzaamheden noodzaakten mij naar Weenen en Rome te vertrekken. In laatstgenoemde plaats hoorde ik, dal Hernant en het meisje waren veroordeeld, beiden tot levenslange gevangenisstraf. De voorspelling van monsieur Robert was juist geweest, al had hij het meisje' dan ook van zijn profetie uitgezonderd. Toen keerde ik op zekeren dag naar Monte Carlo terug en omdat ik op een avond niet wist, wat ik doen zou, besloot ik naar het Casino te gaan. Ik geef niets om muziek of tooneel, maar menschen interesseeren mij altijd, vooral de bezoekers van het Casino. Nauwelijks had pc een voet in een der zalen gezet, of ik zag Drammen, met wien ik vroeger al eens had kennis gemaakt. Hij was nu als een burgerlijk, welgesteld renteniertje gekleed, maar ik herkende hem
direct. In Parijs schminkt hij zich altijd; zijn naam kent niemand en hij wordt ook nooit in de couranten vermeld. Daarom is hij zoo'n gevaarlijke tegenstander van den misdadiger. Hier in Monte Carlo had hij zich niet geschminkt; hier was zijn beste vermomming zijn gewone gezicht en de kleeren van een renteniertje. Onze oogen ontmoetten elkaar en ik merkte direct, dat hij niet wilde hebben dat ik hem aansprak. Hij keerde zich om, en ik zag, dbt zijn handen, die hij op zijn rug hield, eenige keeren open en dicht gingen, Ik volgde hem langzaam, volgde hem door de zalen, door de hall naar buiten. Op zijn gemak wandelde hij door de straten, tot hij in de Rue de Ciel was gekomen, waar hij bleef staan dn me aansprak. Monsieur Robert moetj hem hebben gezegd, dat ik van den moord op madame Sjabot op de hoogte was, want hij begon er direct over.„Ik ben blij, dat ik je vanavond ontmoet," zei hij, „want de zaak heeft, wat men noemt, haar hoogtepunt bereikt. Ik geloof, dat ik mijn man gevonden heb; ik had hem je kunnen aanwijzen in de zaal, waar hij speelde. Hij zag me niet; maar ik verwacht hem vanavond in het huis waar de moord is gebeurd en waar ik kamers heb gehuurd." „Kamers gehuurd?" vroeg ik verbaasd. „Ja," antwoordde hij. „Madame Sjabots étage stond tte huur; niemand walde er zoo gauw na de misdaad graag wonen, en daarom verhuurde monsieur Louis ze met bijzonder veel plezier aan mij. Ik heb er het Casino gadegeslagen en de vreemdelingen, die er komen om te spelen. Ik had geruimen tijd te wachten, maar ik heb mijn man gevonden — èn mijn vrouw." „Wie is de vrouw ?" „Marie — ze was terecht veroordeeld." „En de man?"

Waarom zou ik het hem dus hebben moeten vertellen?" Hij ging mij voor naar boven en ik bevond mij weer op de' kamer, waar mevrouw Sjabot was vermoord. Maar alles zag er nu heel anders uit, nu het vertrek werd bewoond door een rentenierend vrijgezel! Drammen deed me plaatsnemen in een leunstoel, toen schoof hij het raam op en liet het half openstaan. „Verwacht je, dat hij door het raam komt ?" vroeg ik. „Laten we niets verwachten," zei hij. „Ik geloof in Roberts theorie, dat men niet alleen stom moet zijn, maar dat men, indien men eenmaal een theorie heeft, er niet te veel over moet denken of praten, omdat door denken of praten ethergolven ontstaan, die den misdadiger, indien hij er gevoelig voor is, kunnen waarschuwen. Of jelui het geloott of niet, waar is het, dat ik heelemaal geen droogpruim ben. Ik ken een anderen Pruttelaar, een neef van me, die pruttelt niet, maar die die droogpruimt. Dat beteekent: hij zegt alleen maar van die birirre dingen, daar je ijskoud van wordt. Aan zoo iets erger ik me. Ik kan best 'n grappic verdragen en een mop ook. Maar in 't gepaste. Je ergert je soms, hoe menschen verzot zijn op een ongepaste mop. Overigens heel nette lui, advocaten, doktoren,, bankiers, etcetera. Ik ken zelfs een m'nheer die heel graag voorzitter van een kerkeraad zou willen worden en wiens grapjes zoo schuin zijn dat de toren van Pisa d'r letterlijk kaarsrecht bij is. Je zoudt zeggen: hoe is het mogelijk? Maar nu ter zake: Onlangs merkte ik, dat een vulling uit een van m'n kiezen los was geraakt. Ik trok naar m'n mond-smid alias dentist. De witgejaste beul zet me op z'n stoel en voordat ik hem tusschen zal een schets van den stand van zaken tot op het huidige oogenblik geen kwaad kunnen, denk ik." Hij bood me een sigaret aan en vervolgde: ,,Ik kwam hier met een oogenschijnlijk onmogelijke opdracht, maar monsieur Robert had me een tip gegeven hoe ik te werk moest gaan. Pas de laatste dagen is echter gebleken, dat zijn vermoeden juist was. De moordenaar is vóór alles een speler en de misdaad is begaan, om zijn door het spel geruïneerde financiën te herstellen. Hij heeft een neef, die hier een hotel houdt. Een zeer verdacht type, die neef. Hij was het, geloof ik, die de juweelen te gelde heeft gemaakt. Misschien is hij nog grooter misdadiger dan de moordenaar, die tot zijn daad is gedreven door de speeltafel en geldverlies." Terwijl Drammen vertelde en ik hem aankeek en zijn goede kleeren, zijn gouden horlogeketting en de ringen aan zijn vingers zag, kreeg ik opeens het idee, dat hij zichzelf misschien wel tot lokaas voor den moordenaar had gemaakt, en de gedachte, dat de laatste ieder oogenblik door het open venster kon binnenkomen, deed mij een zonderlinge sensatie ondergaan. Ik zei echter niets en hij vertelde verder: „De moordenaar heeft hier twee adressen. Het eene is het hotel van zijn neef. Hij logeert daar niet; hij heeft zelf een huis, een aardige woning, die hij goedkoop heeft gekocht. Er is echter één bezwaar aan dat huis, namelijk dat het in Monte Carlo staat, want daardoor kan hij niet in het Casino spelen. Je weet, dat dit den inwoners van Monte Carlo, die een ondergeschikte betrekking vervullen, is verboden. Hij

En daar hebben me die kerels, die zich m'n vrienden noemen gelachen, gelachen ..... Mensch erger je nou ereis niet! PETRUS PRUTTELAAR. heeft een flinke, aardige verschijning, en hij bezit nogal aantrekkingskracht voor vrouwen. Hierdoor komt het dan ook, dat Marie in zijn netten verstrikt is geraakt. Nu zul je zien, hoe de omstandigheden als het ware hebben samengespannen om dien man tot zijn misdaad te brengen. Hij heeft een broer, die heel veel op hem lijkt, en in wijnen réist voor de firma Vinotinto te Bordeaux. Als die broer in Monte Carlo komt, hetgeen nogal eens het geval is, dan logeert hij in het hotel van den neef en speelt dan ook altijd in het Casino. Op zekeren dag drong het nu tot mijn man, die slechts een eenvoudige bankbediende is, door, dat hij in het Casino z u ?. ^.Vnnen komen indien hij deed alsof hij zijn broer was. Het voornaamste onderscheid tusschen hen bestond in het feit, dat de broer een bril droeg. Het was dus heel gemakkelijk om een bril te koopen en zich voor zijn broer den reiziger uit te geven. Welnu — dat was de moordenaar: een tamelijk welgestelde vrijgezel, die door de magische tooverkracht, welke de speeltafels op hem uitoefenden, in de netten van de misdaad verstrikt raakte. Waarschijnlijk had hij zich, toen hij den eersten keer als zijn broer het Casino binnenging, voorgenomen, dat het ook de laatste keer zou zijn — hij wilde waarschijnlijk alleen maar eens zien, of .hij gelukkig was in het spel. Misschien ook wilde hij slechts de sensatie van het spel leeren kennen. Maar dien eersten keer werd zijn hartstocht voor het spel gewekt. Misschien ook was hij wel een geboren speler — wie zal het zeggen? Men kan alleen zeggen, dat de speeltafels een moordenaar van hem hebben gemaakt. En het Is de verdienste van monsieur Robert, dat hij direct heeft begrepen, dat de man, die het fiche op de kamer van madame Sjabot heeft verloten, een inwoner van Monte Carlo was, die vermomd in het Casino speelde." ..Drarnmen zweeg en stond op, terwijl hij mij door een teeken beduidde te zwijgen. „Daar komt hij!"

Ver weg in de stille straat hoorde ik voetstappen. Drammer sloot het raam. „Waarom doet u het raam dicht?" vroeg ik. „Ik heb het alleen maar opengezet om hem te hooren komen," zei hij. „Kom mee. Mijnheer zal heel gewoon door de voordeur naar binnen komen als ik mij niet vergis. Gauw, kom!" Ik greep mijn hoed en volgde hem naar beneden, naar de hall, waar we bleven staan wachten tot de voetstappen buiten voor de deur stilhielden. Het licht in de hall was aan. We hoorden hoe de sleutel in het gat werd gestoken, de deur open ging en een man binnentrad. Het was monsieur Louis — alleen. Ik had medelijden met Drammer. Ik voelde mij als iemand, die moet luisteren naar een redenaar, die niet uit zijn woorden kan komen. „Goeden avond, monsieur," zei monsieur Louis, toen hij Drammer zag. „Goeden avond," antwoordde deze. „Ik wilde juist mijn vriend uitlaten. Gelukkig echter, dat u net komt, want mijn vriend wilde u graag een en ander vragen over de speelzalen." „Gaat u mee naar binnen," zei monsieur Louis, „dan kunnen we even praten." Hij opende de deur in de hall, die toegang gaf tot zijn appartementen en we gingen de zitkamer binnen, waar hij het licht aanstak, en ons stoelen en sigaretten presenteerde. Drammer wilde echter niet rooken. „Monsieur Louis," zei hij, terwijl wij plaats namen, „neemt u mijn vraag niet kwalijk, maar hoeveel hebt u vanavond gewonnen in het Casino ?" De moordenaar stond bij deze vreeselijke vraag schielijk op. Toch scheen hij de volle beteekenis er van nog niet eens te begrijpen. Hij voelde, dat hij in de val was geloopen, maar hij wist nog niet, hoc verschrikkejijk de val was. „Ha..." zei hij, „een spion van de bank!" „Neen," zei Drammen, „ik heb niets uitstaande met de bank, waar u kassier is. Ik ben detective en zoek naar den eigenaar van een fiche van tien francs, dat gevonden is op ..." Hij voltooide den zin niet. Monsieur Louis was overeind gevlogen en rende naar de deur. We grepen hem echter nog net bijtijds en de worsteling, die ontstond, duurde niet lang. Wij vonden den bril in zijn zak en eveneens een groot aantal bankbiljetten, die hij dien avond had gewonnen. Op het bureau van politie, waar wc hem heen brachten, vertelden ze hem, dat zijn neef de hotelier, alles had bekend. Dat was niet waar, maar het hielp, want in zijn woede ontzag hij nu zijn neef niet meer, doch vertelde dat deze de juweelen had verkocht. Beide mannen kregen levenslang. Monsieur Louis vertelde ook de waarheid over Marie, het meisje, dat begonnen was met het horloge te stelen om het aan Hernant cadeau te geven, en geëindigd was met monsieur Louis bij zijn verfoeilijke daad te helpen. Marie had hem niet verraden, om de eenvoudige reden, dat ze dan ook zich-

In de eerste plaats omdat zij op interessante wijze de methode doet zien, welke monsieur Robert volgt. Hij begreep direct, waar h^t in deze zaak om ging: om het fiche van tien francs. .Toen hij monsieur Louis over dat fiche sprak, zag hij onmiddellijk wat ik niét zag: namelijk, dat monsieur Louis de man was, die het had laten vallen. Als monsieur Louis werkelijk handig was geweest, dan zou hij natuurlijk zijn bril hebben vernietigd en nooit meer naar^ het Casino zijn gegaan, nadat de politie dat fiche had gevonden, maar in slaap gewiegd door het feit, dat Hernant en Marie veroordeeld waren, en niet vermoedend, wat dat fiche monsieur Robert allemaal had verteld, had hij zijn bril opgezet en was hij weer de fatale speelzalen binnengegaan. In de tweede plaats heb ik je de geschiedenis verteld, om je te laten zien, waartoe de speelzucht iemand kan brengen. In Monte Carlo wordt bijna lederen dag iemand door den speelduivel gedood, om maar te zwijgen van hen, die er worden geruïneerd of tot misdaad gebracht. Dat is allemaal heel erg en wij veroordeelen, straffen deze menschen, maar wat zullen wij zeggen van hen, die een vrijbrief van de maatschappij hebben om anderen, uit zucht tot gewin, in den dood te drijven? Zijn zij zooveel beter dan monsieur Louis ?" Ik antwoordde niet op deze vraag, maar keek door het open venster naar het verlichte Monte Carlo, dat daar lag als het valsch-loerende oog van een roofdier...

Eckehart Bleibtreu, een der directeuren van de fabriek van zijn schoonvader handelsraad Apel, is een model-echtgenoot. Zijn pedante, oer-solide levensopvattingen vallen evenwel niet in den smaak van Traute, zijn levenslustige vrouwtje, dat er naar snakt, dat haar stjjve man eindelijk eens losser en vlotter wordt. Zijn braafheid werkt op haar zenuwen Gitta, haar zusje, die met Eckehart's mede-directeur Fritz Stürmer getrouwd is, heeft het daarentegen heel dikwijls met haar man, die juist wat al te vlot en los is, te kwaad. Hoe vaak heeft Fritz al niet beterschap beloofd, maar zijn neiging is onuitroeibaar. Susi heet zijn nieuwste vriendinnetje, een cabaretartiste. Fritz neemt alle voorzorgsmaatregelen, opdat niemand zijn verhouding tot Susi te weten zal komen. Daarom heeft hij zich aan haar voorgesteld als Dr. Eckehart Bleibtrcu en de vertrekken voor Susi op den naam van zijn zwager Eckehart gehuurd. Doch na korten tijd fluistert men elkaar overal toe, dat het met een van Apel's schoonzoons weer niet pluis is. Maar dit keer is het Eckehart, de brave Eckehart, die teedere betrekkingen heeft aangeknoopt! De familie Apel is ontzet! Eckehart is radeloos over zijn eigen gedrag en Fritz triomfeert! Hij bezweert Eckehart de rol van ,,ontrouw echtgenoot" verder te spelen, om zelf voor ontmaskering veilig te zijn. Zoo'n slippertje is immers niet erg, zegt hij, en bovendien zal Traute heel trotsch op hem zijn! Eckehart, de wereldvreemde man, gaat daarop in. Nu is Traute's wensch vervuld! Maar vrouwen zijn onlogisch en daarom is Traute ook diep verontwaardigd! Zij verhuist naar haar ouders en stuurt het op een echtscheiding aan. Dat wordt Eckehart te bar! Maar als hij verzekert, dat hij het niet is, wordt hij door niemand van de familie geloofd. Wgedend begeeft Eckehart, die nog altijd geen vermoeden heeft, dat zijn zwager Susi's vriend is, zich naar Susi's woning om haar te bewegen, voor zijn onschuld te pleiten, Susi heeft echter reeds haar relaties met Fritz ^vrbroken en is verhuisd. In haar vroegere svoning heeft nu een vrouwelijke zenuwarts
haar intrek genomen. Eckehart komt haar juist van pas. Patiënten zijn zeer zeldzaam en zij ziet in hem een ernstig geval. Eckehart is van meening, dat hij Susi tegenover zich heeft en wordt driftig! Dat komt hem duur te staan! De dokteres roept twnee sterke helpers, die hem naar de massage-inrichting sleepen, waar hij zich luid brullend moet laten welgevallen, dat men hem klopt, wrijft, kneedt en baadt! Zoo wordt hij door schoonmoeder, vrouw en zwager gevonden. Van de verwarring, die daarbij ontstaat, maakt hij gebruik om-te vluchten. Schoonpapa onderhoudt Eckehart en Fritz over hun gedrag. Nauwelijks heeft hy bevolen, dat Eckehart aan zjjn verhouding met Susi een einde moet maken, of Karl Moor, de broer van Susi, wordt aangediend. „Mijneheeren," roept Karl uit, „nadat u mijn zuster hebt gecompromitteerd, moet u óf een polis van 50000 mark teekenen óf een duel accepteeren!" En Eckehart, die het slachtoffer van den truc van Susi en Karl wordt, teekent! Susi heeft een nieuwe verovering gemaakt: een gezant! Eckehart, die zeer terneergeslagen is, wordt beroemd, want de heele stad bewondert hem als den „voorganger" van den gezant. De gezant, die er nietsop gesteld is, dat zyn „voorganger" in diezelfde stad van Susi woont, weet handelsraad Apel te bewegen, Eckehart tot directeur van het filiaal van Apel's fabriek te Parys te benoemen. Eckehart wordt door den gezant met een ridderorde begiftigd. Fritz, die de post van directeur te Parjjs altijd geambieerd heeft, is dol van jalouzie. Hij brengt nu aan het licht, dat hij de schuldige is geweest, maar niemand gelooft hem, terwijl Eckehart zich in zijn rol van Don Juan wonderwel gevoelt, daar het slippertje hem aanzien en een vooraanstaande positie in het buitenland heeft bezorgd.

DE BERDE MUZE .DICKY" Het was juist precies zeven jaar geleden, dat het Haagsche Cabaret en Tooneelgezelschap ,,G.E.", samengesteld uit personeel van Gemeenschappelijk Eigendom, haar eerste uitvoering gaf. Voor de eerste maal was men naar de Seinpost getrokken en ook ik mocht voor de eerste maal met hen kennismaken. De heer P. van Zwieteren, de leider, koos voor dezen avond het detective-spel „Dicky", waarmede hij reeds bij ,,A.D.O.-D.V.S." met de vertolking der titelrol het vorige jaar een groot succes wist te behalen. Over dit alleraardigste stuk schreef ik reeds, zoodat ik kan volstaan met het spel te bespreken. Het succes van den avond was wederom voor P. van Zwieteren, die van Dicky een volmaakte uitbeelding gaf. In alle opzichten weer volmaakt, beheerschte hij volkomen de rol, was brutaal waar dit noodig was, dan weer innemend, en wist zelfs medelijden op te wekken. Vooral in het derde bedrijf was hij utstek«nd. H. van Zwieteren was Lord Wilförd. Zijn spel was goed, alleen was het vreemd, dat er bij momenten zoo'n groot verschil was in zijn „heer zijn", somwijlen was hij volkomen de oude Lord en direct daarop er even volkomen naast. Ook het verschil in kleeding droeg daar veel toe bij. Laat ik bekennen, dat ik met angst de uitbeelding van Lady Glenmore tegemoet
zag, want de prachtvertolking, die mevrouw Kuipers er van heeft gegeven, zou moeilijk te evenaren zijn. Met dubbele blijdschap mag ik constateeren, dat mevrouw T. Kriens mij verrast heeft met haar zeer beschaafde uitbeelding. Hoe goed was het merkbaar, dat zij de situatie van het begin reeds doorzag; ook haar sympathieke verschijning droeg er veel toe bij de vertolking zoo aannemelijk mogelijk te maken. Alleen, wat juist bij mevrouw Kuipers zoo opviel: het vullen van het tooneel ontbrak. Wat meer charme zou geen kwaad gedaan hebben. Met genoegen luistert men steeds naar de verzorgde uitspraak, hoewel het wel wat luider had mogen zijn. Mevrouw van Zwieteren was verdienstelijk als Lord Wilfords tweede vrouw — nog wat losser mag wel! — terwijl zijn kinderen James en Lilian (Chr. Meys en mejuffrouw H. Zegveld) veel te dilettanterig waren. Aan het slot was duidelijk te merken, dat Lilian iets zou gaan zeggen, zij stond voor haar aanloopje gereed, wachtend op het wachtwoord; ook James leed aan dit euvel. In den aanvang stonden beiden veel te houterig te praten en lag de onnatuurlijkheid er boven op. Mejuffrouw L. Zegveld als de secretaresse, was niet onverdienstelijk. Heel jammer, dat de spraak zoo onverzorgd was, het werd vaak zeer burgerlijk. Tot slot zij nog vermeld de uitbeelding van den buttler. Deze rol schijnt steeds groote moeilijkheden te bieden. Ook J. Emons was nu meer een arme, oude huisknecht.

Men vergeet blijkbaar steeds, dat een buttler een voorname persoonlijkheid is en vooral in een familie, waar hij meer dan 183 jaren in betrekking is (van vader op zoon dan altijd!) De overige spelers trachtten allen hun rollen zoo goed mogelijk te brengen. De aankleeding was goed verzorgd, het samenspel mocht sluitender zijn en vooral aan de grime moet meer aandacht geschonken worden. HENRI A. VAN EIJSDEN Jr. NOG EENS: DE GRIME

eeds verschillende malen heb ik arikelen gewijd aan de grime! De aandachtige lezer van „Het Weekblad" zal in de laatste nummers gemerkt hebben, dat er verschillende keeren in de verslagen aanmerkingen gemaakt werden over de grime bij onze amateur-vereenigingen. De groote fout is, dat de spelers zelf, noch de regie hier voldoende aandacht aan besteden. Men vertrouwt daarbij ten volle op den tooneelkapper. Komt men bij zulk een tooneelkapper met een bekend stuk, dan heet het: „Bekend, mijnheer, het komt in orde!" Is het stuk niet bekend, dan vraagt hij soms (niet eens altijd) een opgave van de ipllen en de uit te beelden karakters. Alsof dit voldoende ware! Alsof een „bekend stuk" door elke vereeniging op dezelfde wijze ten tooneele gebracht wordt! Hier zit 'm de kneep. Ik wil hiermede niets kwaads zeggen van onze tooneelkappers — integendeel, er zijn zeer goede onder ook! De regisseur moet zich echter, in het algemeen gesproken, méér met de grime bezig houden, waarbij ik natuurlijk vooropstel, dat hij terzake kundig is. Het is daarom niet voldoende om Vrijdags een kapper te komen vertellen, dat den volgenden avond dat en dat stuk gaat en of hij alsjeblieft wil komen en alles meebrengen. Dat in vele gevallen een pruik zoo hinderlijk slecht zit, is dikwerf niet de fout van den grimeur. Het moet geweten worden aan de luiheid of laksheid van den regisseur of betreffenden speler, die niet eerst de moeite heeft genomen even bij den kapper aan te loopen om de te gebruiken pruik te passen. Al deze kleine voorzorgjes voorkomen een boel ellende en geven bovendien die verzorgdbeid aan uw uitvoeringen, welke ze zal döcn onderscheiden van die van vereeniging«n, die dit alles als niet noodig oordeelen. Tot slot de volgende opmerking: Men zorge er steeds voor bijtijds met kappen gereed te zyn, zoodat er steeds voldoende tijd over is voor den regisseur om alles te controleeren en eventueele veranderingen te doen aanbrengen. Met belangatelling zie ik deze voQr,telling tegemoet. Bijgaande foto bewijat. dat men bij ..Ue Nederlanden van 1845" wel moeite voor de goede zaak over heeft.
VAN ONZE BOEKENPLANK Henri 't Sas, Jacob Janson's Liefde. Dit is het verhaal van een zielig Joodsch jongentje, dat na den dood van z'n vader bij familieleden wordt opgevoed. Bij deze bekrompen menschen vindt het kind weinig liefde. Hij wordt bij een slager in de leer gebracht, een niet-Jood, waar zijn bestaan al niet veel gelukkiger is. De eenige, die zich om hem bekommert, is de leelijke dochter van den slager. Tegen de verdrukking in weet de jongen zich op te werken. De baas drinkt en is eigenlijk een minderwaardige vooze bruut. Na zijn dood wordt Jacob de heerschende figuur in de zaak. De dochter laat duidelijk merken, dat ze hem als man begeert. Als Jacob door de verbintenis met de dochter op het punt staat z'n doel te bereiken, komt een frisch Zeeuwsch deerntje in zijn leven. En hij bezwijkt voor de zinnelijke attracties, welke van dit speelsche, coquette ding uitgaan. De slagersdochter moet het veld ruimen. Doch ook daarna is Jacob verre van fortuinlijk. In het verloop van het verhaal komt de lezer te weten, wie eigenlijk z'n moeder was en waarom zijn vader door z'n rechtzinnige familie met den rug werd aangekeken. Het geheel is een ietwat singulier verhaal, met goede pakkende details, levendig geschreven en hier en daar met scherpe, rake belichting van misstanden en misvattingen. De uitgever, N.V, Seyffard's Boek- en Muziekhandel, Amsterdam, heeft het boek welverzorgd doen verschijnen. Eerste hulp bij ongelukken. Bij de fa. G. B. van Goor en Zonen, Den Haag, verscheen De Kleine Gids voor eerste hulp bij ongelukken, een boekje door de doktoren Feenstra en Mijnlieff, in opdracht van het bestuur van den Kon. Nat. Bond voor Reddingswezen en eerste hulp bij ongelukken samengesteld. Het is een handig boekske, dat slechts / 0.45 kost. W. C. win Oven-van Doorn, Krullekop, Kaalkop en klein broertje. De titel en de plaatjes vertellen je direct, dat dit nu een boek is voor kleuters, die aan moeders schoot staan of er zich genoeglijk in nestelen om te hooren „voorlezen" en daarbij zelf actief zijn door het plaatjes kijken. Lida von Wedell heeft er heel aardige plaatjes voor geteekend, welke gedeeltelijk in kleuren, anderdeels in een kleur tusschen den tekst zijn afgebeeld. Het is een aardig denkbeeld, om die kleurenprentjes op te plakken, zoodat zij, als men dit wil, zelfs voor wandversiering zouden kunnen worden gebruikt. De teekeningen van Mevr. von Wedell zijn daarvoor zeer geschikt. Mevr. van Oven heeft een echt „lang

De illusies, die er door worden opgewekt, blijven binnen het bevattingsvermogen van den kleinen kleuter, waarvoor ze bestemd zijn. De prijs van dit kwartoformaat boek is ƒ 1.90 geb. Ph. Exel. Mijnheer van der Pegge in China. Deze schrijver heeft wel rijke fantasie en hij weet die in een aantrekkelijken vorm te gieten. Abraham van der Pegge, een achtbaar ingezetene van Haarlem, eigenaar van een wclbeklante thee- en koffie — en (vergeet dat niet, hoe fantastisch het ook klinkt) snuifwinkel, lijdt schipbreuk. Hij is in China aangeland. Het boek speelt in den tijd van Napoleon. De schrijver verstaat meesterlijk de kunst om de door hem vertelde geschiedenis vast te knoopen aan tal van wetenswaardige en leerzame mededeelingen uit den tijd waarin het verhaal speelt. O. Verhagen zorgt voor goede illustraties. En de fa. van Goor, de uitgeefster, deed de rest. Een aardig jongensboek. Niet te duur.
Geb. / 2.25. Leonard Roggeveen. Het draaiorgel van meneer Dancker. Roggeveen is als schrijver van jongensboeken voor een beetje fantasie niet bang. De ongeloofelijke avonturen van Bram Vingerling, het Geheim van het oude horloge, de Electrische man, Draadlooze oogen, allemaal boeken, die we in ons blad hebben aangekondigd, zijn er evenveel bewijzen van. Geen wonder dus, dat toen uit het pak, dat de firma van Goor Zonen ons stuurde, ditmaal een nieuw boek van dezen schrijver te voorschijn kwam, getiteld: „Het draaiorgel van m'neer Dancker", we weer nieuwe wonderlijkheden verwachtten. Doch het liep anders uit. Dit is een boek, waarin wel een lot uit de loterij voorkomt, doch verder eigenlijk geen wonderen, of het mocht dan zijn het wonder dat in opgewektheid, menschenmin en samenwerking ligt. Het boek is er niet minder waard om. Eerlijk gezegd, ik geef het m'n jongen van twaalf nog liever cadeau dan al die fantasterijen. M'neer Dancker is een opgewekte schilder en z'n orgel het prijsje uit de loterij. Hoe hij met dat orgel en z'n vriendje Tom, alias Klaas, er in slaagde om geluk en tevredenheid in het pension Coeling te brengen, dat moet u uw jongens laten lezen, m'nheer en mevrouw. Zonder eenige aarzeling durf ik verklaren, dat het „vak" van filmster het moeilijkste en onaangenaamste ter wereld is, en als ik ooit nog eens opnieuw mijn filmcarrière zou beginnen, dan zou ik mij er met alle geweld tegen verzetten om tot „ster" geproclameerd te worden. Ik zou het niet verder willen brengen dan „leading man", zooals er in filmland tientallen zijn: menschen, die een belangrijke rol in een film spelen, maar toch geen, met koeienletters geannonceerde hoofdrol. Men zal deze bewering eenigszins vreemdsoortig vinden en er zullen collega's zijn, die mij verwijten, dat ik een „opschepper" ben," dat ik „goed praten" heb, nu ik het eenmaal tot ster gebracht heb en dat ik, wanneer ik zoo graag „ster-af" wil zijn, het filmbedrijf maar moet verlaten en mijn plaats aan een ander afstaan. Mijn eenige antwoord hierop is:,Als ik kans zag, om uit de gelederen der sterren te verdwijnen, zou ik het doenl"
FILMSTER ZIJN 15 HET MOEILIJKSTE EN ONAANGENAAMSTE VAK TER WERELD DOOR
REGINALD DENNY Mijn bezwaren? Ze zijn vele. In de eerste plaats is de titel: „filmster" een voortdurende last. Men wordt op een piëdestal gezet en kan er niet meer afkomen. Je heele leven wordt uitgestippeld en van echte, ongedwongen vrijheid is geen sprake meer! Ik ben waarlijk niet zoo'n dwaas, dat ik de voordeelen van het „stardom" en de aangename^ zijden in 't geheel niet tel. Integendeel: ook ik heb aanvankelijk behagen geschept in de onderscheiding, waarmee ik overal behandeld werd, in de brieven, die ik van alle kanten kreeg en de waardeering over mijn werk. Een mensch

is nu eenmaal min of meer (mees; mèèr) ijdel en het is heusch een eigenaardige sensatie, wanneer je voor de eerste maal je naam in lichtletters aan een theatergevel leest. Maar desondanks geloof ik nu, dat de nadelen en .de bezwaren niet opwegen tegen de voordeelen en de genoegens. Wanneer een jongeman, die vooruitkomt in het filmbedrijf, mij zou vragen: „Moet ik een ster worden?" zou ik onmiddellijk zeggen: „Neen!" Ik weet wel, dat jongelui zulke dingen niet zullen vragen en een dergelijk advies evenmin^ zouden opvolgen. Hef lijkt te mooi om filmster te kunnen zijn. Een filmster verdient zooveel geld! Zou het waar zijn? Ik ken een knap acteur. Geen ster. Hij begon zijn carrière tegelijk met mij. Hij weigerde echter om officieel tot „star" te promoveeren, en stelde zich tevreden roet goede rollen in goede films. Op het oogenblik heeft hij meer geld dan ik, zijn zenuwen zijn volkomen normaal gebleven, hij heeft acht prettige jaren achter zich, speelde een uitgebreide serie rollen van den meest verschillenden aard en leidt een aangenaam leven! Ik verdien goed s^id. maar ik moet veel uitgeven, ik wer'«:.,aak onder zeer hoogen druk, ben bestemd voor een . bepaald soort rollen, moet steeds zorgen, 'dat ik op mijn piëdestal blijf staan en leid een nerveus leven. Mijn vriend heeft een paar rollen gespeeld, die geen succes waren. Desondanks bleef hij gehandhaafd. Wanneer ik driemaal faal, kan ik er wel uitscheiden. Het gezegde in de filmwereld: „Drie slechte films beteekenen ontslag" is nog steeds waar. De rolkeuze van mijn vriend is een kwestie, die alleen de studio aangaat. De productieleider en de regisseur wijzen hem voor een bepaalde rol aan. Als hij denkt, dat 't niets voor hem is, kan hij om een andere rol vragen. Vandaag is hij een apache, morgen een scheepskapitein en overmorgen vliegenier... hij houdt een breeden blik op zijn werk. Van de minuut af, waarop men tot ster verheven wordt, moet men lijden onder de film, die „het groote succes" bracht. Dat is het prototype van „het genre films, waarin deze ster zoo bijzonder uitblinkt". Ik heb vroeger tallooze rollen gespeeld en ik prefereer een licht-dramatische rol. Mijn eerste groote succes was echter een comedie en sindsdien heb ik niet anders meer gespeeld. Kaas is heel lekker, maar alle dagen kaas begint te vervelen. Daarbij komt, dat wanneer een film niet het succes heeft, dat men ervan verwachtte, van de duizend menschen die er aan medewerkten in de eerste plaats de ster de schuld krijgt. Ik ben tenminste blij, dat ik nu voor het eerst sinds vele jaren een rol gespeeld heb, die anders is dan mijn gewone ster-rollen. Ik zinspeel hier op Cecil de Mule's film „Madame Satan", waarin ik me voor het eerst sinds langen tijd eens geen ster gevoeld heb. Want, al klinkt het wat zonderling: filmster zijn... heeft vele bezwaren!
ÊOE? Nergens had Brent amalgama ontdekt, waar het niet behoorde te zijn, en een onderzoek, ingesteld te Port Arthur, de dichtstbij gelegen mijnstad van eenige beteekenis, waar men een dergelijk kostbaar materiaal zou hebben kunnen verkoopen, bracht aan het licht, dat er nooit iets te koop was aangeboden! Indien Parfitt de dief was, dan moest hij zóó knap zijn, dat het niet onder woorden was te brengen. Tot deze conclusie was Brent gekomen, toen de lift naar boven kwam met de dagploeg, die genieten ging van een uur rust en zonlicht. Brent telde de mannen automatisch. Twaalf krachtige gestalten. Hij merkte, dat ze er allemaal waren behalve de voorman. „Waar is Murdoch?" „Bij het kruispunt van de derde gang,' zei een der mannen. „We schieten een groote, ronde opening, en hij wilde zelf de ontsteking tot stand brengen." Brent knikte; hij begreep het. Murdoch wilde de explosie aan het begin van het schaftuur doen plaats vinden, opdat het doodelijke gas, dat er door ontwikkeld zou worden, opgetrokken zou zijn voordat de mannen weer aan het werk gingen. Hij stelde zich de scène voor. De diepe gaten, half gevuld met dynamiet en dichtgestopt met zand. De witte lonten, die voor de helft in het dynamiet zaten en met de andere helft door het zand naar buiten staken, en kleine slangetjes leken in het gele licht van Murdochs kaars. Hij zag, hoe de voorman het einde er van aanstak,tot de lont in de duisternis begon te gloeien en het vuur zijn weg door het zand vrat, steeds dieper het gat in, tot eindelijk het dynamiet was bereikt en de rots vaneengespleten werd. „Hoeveel gaten zijn er gemaakt?" vroeg hij. „Acht," antwoordde de man, en hij slofte naar de machinekamer, Brents polsen sloegen sneller. Hij haalde zijn horloge te voorschijn en telde de seconden. De lift was weer naar beneden gegaan, om Murdoch te halen, die zich ijlings ei heen moest begeven om buiten het bereik van het gevaar te komen. Maar van beneden kwam geen signaal om de lift op te halen. Verscheidene seconden gingen voorbij. Wat gebeurde er in de ingewanden van de Victrix? Ondanks zichzelf begon Brent te beven. Plotseling, als een vonnis, klonk er een doffe knal uit de opening van de mijnToen weer een en nog een. Brent richtte zich in zijn volle lengte op en bleef onbeweeglijk staan. Vijf knallen had hij nu geteld. Zes, Zeveni Toen bleef het even stil. Eindelijk klonk de achtste, heviger en zwaarder dan de vorige. Uit de opening van de mijn kwam een wolk gas en een lange sliert damp; op hetzelfde oogenblik verspreidde zich een scherpe, verstikkende geur. Murdoch was er ergens midden in, waar geen mensch mocht zijn. Het was niet onmogelijk, dat hij dood was, maar indien hij door een of
ander toeval in leven was gebleven en niet verpletterd was door een stuk van de rots, dan had de dood hem toch in ieder geval bij de keel, met een greep, die steeds vaster werd en die hem ieder oogenblik dreigde te doen stikken — de dood, die iedereen bedreigde, die het waagde om nu naar beneden te gaan. Brent aarzelde niet lang. Hij snelde naar den ingang van de schacht en rukte aan de signaalklok. De lift schoot omhoog, een wolk van gas voor zich uit drijvend. Murdoch was niet in de lift. Instinctief keek Brent om zich heen, met één blik het gansche panorama van zonneluister en leven om zich heen omvattend — toen, zonder dat zijn hand beefde, greep hij opnieuw het touw van de signaalklok. De bel klonk twee keer. Het was het teeken om de lift te laten zakken. En toen gleed 'de beheerder van de Victiix uit het gezicht. HOOFDSTUK XII. Parfitt stond naast de groote amalgamaplaten en keek onderzoekend naar hun verzilverde oppervlakte. Het was goed erts, dat nu van de derde gang kwam, en hij was overtuigd, dat het veel meer zou opbrengen dan de laatste maanden het geval was geweest. Vroeger zou deze overweging hem met heimelijke vreugde hebben vervuld, maar nu nam hij een geheel ander standpunt in. Parfitt bevond zich in de onaangename positie van een dief, die bekend heeft. Hij had met oneindige zorg gestolen, en met een handigheid, die hij zich door een lange ervaring had veroverd. Hij deed het altijd des nachts. Geheel onverwachts was hij af en toe naar den molen gegaan, alsof
hij zich wilde overtuigen, dat alles goed ging. Dan gaf hij zijn assistent, die van des avonds zeven tot des morgens zeven uur het toezicht in den molen had, een karweitje te doen, dat hem gedurende eenigen tijd in den anderen hoek van den molen bezig hield. Zijn assistent, een eerlijke, rondborstige kerel, had nooit iets vermoed, en het was voor Parfitt steeds slechts de kwestie geweest van een paar vlugge streken over de oppervlakte der platen, waarbij hij den scherpen kant van een plat stuk hard hout gebruikte, om een paar ons van het kostbare amalgama in zijn zakken te doen verdwijnen. Wanneer de ander dan weer naar zijn plaats terugkeerde, was er niets meer te merken van hetgeen er was gebeurd. Zoo was het den eenen nacht na den anderen gegaan. Het amalgama was naar een ver verwijderde stad gebracht door een soort marskramer, die de Victrix iedere maand bezocht met allerlei nuttige koopwaar. Met dezen man deelde Parfitt de opbrengst. Hij vroeg zich juist af, wat hij tegen den koopman moest zeggen, wanneer deze den volgenden keer weer kwam, toen hij King de trap naast de opslagplaats van het erts zag afkomen. Op dit gezicht voelde de voorman van den molen zich als een rat in de val. Indien King al zag, dat de ander weinig op zijn gemak was, zoo liet hij hiervan toch niets blijken. Parfitt was voor hem niets anders dan een werktuig, dat hij zonder genade of aarzeling wilde gebruiken. Hij ging naar den voorman toe en bleef bij de platen staan. „Hoe doet het erts het?" vroeg hij koel. De ander maakte een slikkend geluid. „Het doet het goed — veel beter dan de vorige maand."

King knikte. „Dat dacht ik wel. De volgende week zal de opbrengst worden vastgesteld, en ik zal je nu zeggen, wat je doen moet." „Goed," zei Parfitt gedwee. „Je methoden kunnen mij niets schelen -— ik zou zelfs liever maar niet eens weten, hoe je doet — maar ik neem aan, dat je wel kans ziet om tegen de volgende week zooveel te hebben verduisterd, dat de opbrengst deze maand inplaats van dertien, slechts tien dollar per ton bedraagt. Je hoeft mij niet zoo aan te kijken," vervolgde hij kalm, „want ik weet, dat je een schurk bent." Parfitt voelde zich gekrenkt en zenuwachtig. „Bij den hemel," zei hij, „ik ben de eenige niet." King wierp hem een onderzoekenden blik toe. „Weet je wat zoo ongeveer de gemiddelde straf is voor het stelen van amalgama?" De groote man trilde op zijn beenen en schudde zijn hoofd. „In andere landen is het ongeveer vijf jaar, en in Canada zal het zeker niet minder zijn,^ zei King. „Heb je nog wat te vragen?" Parfitt's gedachten waren van niets anders dan vragen vervuld, maar hij kon er niet één van onder woorden brengen! Hij vroeg zich af, of de marskramer hem misschien verraden had, en ook, welke straf er stond op het aanzetten tot diefstal, hetgeen de directeur van de Victrix nu toch eigenlijk deed. „Neen," mompelde hij, „ik heb niets te vragen!" „Luister dan!" King zei nu, wat hij van Parfitt verlangde, en hij deed dit op zoo'n duidelijke manier, dat er geen ruimte voor misverstand overbleef. Koel en weloverwogen ontvouwde hij zijn plan en terwijl Parfitt luisterde, werd zijn gezicht met een bleeke, aschgrauwe tint o vertogen. Het was te geraffineerd en te laag om het te kunnen gelooven, maar hij begreep, dat wanneer de zaak ooit voor een rechtbank zou komen. King voor de gevolgen niet bang behoefde te zijn, omdat hij alles veel te handig in elkaar had gezet. „Nu je weet wat je te doen hebt, zou ik willen weten, waar je het goedje verbergt?" „Onder een plank in den vloer van mijn bungalow." King perste zijn lippen samen. „In je eigen kamer — waar mijn nichtje nu is?" „Ja." „Dus je hebt er niet meer aan kunnen komen sinds wij hier zijn?" Parfitt schudde zijn hoofd. „Neen. Ik heb de rest in het bosch verborgen, niet ver van het kantoortje van Brent." „Dan dien je te zorgen, dat je, hetgeen in je bungalow is, in je bezit krijgt en dat je liet bij het andere brengt in het bosoh. Het gebeurt vaak, dat zij, die door menschen van het slag als Marcus King dwazen worden genoemd, op wonderbaarlijke wijze worden beschermd tegen de listen en lagen, die hun vijanden hun leggen. Terwijl Brent zijn longen met een diepen teug frissche lucht vulde, voelde hij, hoe de lift naar beneden schoot en hij zich eenige seconden later temidden van een dichte wolk scherpen damp bevond. Hij wist niet hoe lang hij het er in zou kunnen uithouden en zijn kracht en bewustzijn bewaren, maar hij veronderstelde, dat dit misschien vijf, hoogstens zes minuten zouden zijn. Hij hield zijn mond stijf gesloten en haalde langzaam door zijn neus adem, op die wijze zoo min mogelijk vergiftig gas inhalend. Een duizeling overviel hem, toen de kooi met een ruk op de derde gang stopte. Naar hij veronderstelde, zouden de mannen boven nu zoowat weten, wat er gaande was. Het had geen zin om te probeeren een kaars aan te steken, daar in deze verstikkende atmosfeer geen vlam zou kunnen branden. In het versfe eind van de gang ontsnapte het gas met groote, verwarde slierten uit een opening in den mijnwand en vulde de heele gang van boven tot onder en van 't eene einde tot het andere. Omdat deze gassen iets lichter waren dan de lucht, kroop Brent op handen en voeten verder en met zijn mond dicht bij den grond, trachtte hij in de zwarte duisternis zijn weg te vinden als een groot, wanstaltig voorhistorisch dier, dat op zoek is naar de beschutting van zijn hol. Murdoch moest ergens tusschen hem en het einde van de derde gang liggen. In deze oogenblikken van bijna bovenmenschelijke inspanning begon zijn brein met koortsachtige snelheid te werken. Met den dood misschien zóó dichtbij, was het niet te verwonderen dat hij inplaats van aan

Murdoch, aan twee vrouwen moest denken. De een was vierduizend mijl ver weg, de ander vlakbij, en bewoog zich in den warmen zonneschijn boven zijn hoofd. Hij wist nu, dat wanneer hij in leven bleef, het gezicht van Sylvia Dart binnen niet al te langen tijd zijn droomen zou overschaduwen van die andere Sylvia, naar wie zijn hart nog slechts eenige weken geleden, met jongensachtige geestdrift was uitgegaan. Toen, terwijl de verstikkende gassen om hem heen, zich schenen te verdichten, concentreerde hij al zijn gedachten op Murdoch. Het volgende oogenblik raakte hij het been van een man aan. Hetgeen nu volgde kan alleen maar worden toegeschreven aan die zegenrijke genade, die ons stervelingen in het uur van den uitersten nood begiftigt met meer dan menschelijke krachten. Terwijl hij op den tast om zich heen voelde, kwam Brent tot de conclusie, dat Murdoch op zijn zij lag, met zijn mond dicht bij den grond, waar de lucht beter was om adem te halen. Het kostte Brent groote inspanning om hem op té tillen, ofschoon het in gewone omstandigheden geen moeite voor hem zou zijn geweest. Met het slappe lichaam over zijn schouder, keerde hij naar den uitgang terug. De jonge reus dreigde telkens te vallen terwijl hij voortwaggelde; hij voelde zich duizelig en ziek en vergde van iedere spier en van iedere zenuw de uiterste inspanning. Hij deed nu geen moeite meer, het gas uit zijn longen te houden, want dat zou nu beteekenen, dat hij langzamer vooruitkwam. Blind en zoo ziek als hij zich nog nimmer had gevoeld, wankelde hij voort. Hij moest nog slechts een goede honderd meter. Nu nog maar vijftig. Nu was het gas wat lichter en kon hij het vallen van het water in de schacht hooren. Toen voelde hij het houtwerk, dat de lift omgaf, en daarna de lift zelf. Hij zag niets dan de zwartste duisternis om zich heen en had het gevoel, alsof hij ieder oogenblik zou neervallen, maar met een wanhopige krachtsinspanning slaagde hij er in, het touw van de bel te grijpen en terwijl hij het nog in zijn handen hield, zakte hij bewusteloos in elkaar. Vallend trok hij het touw strak. In de machinehall klonk scherp het signaal. Het was het teeken om op te halen. Eenige oogenblikken later keerde hij tot bewustzijn terug; met gesloten oogen bleef hij bewegingloos liggen, tot zijn gewone en verbazingwekkende kracht weer Jangzaam in zijn groote lichaam terugkeerde. Toen opende hij zijn oogen en keek hij in de gezichten van de mannen, die angstig om hem heen knielden.
