Damó István képei elé (A megnyugvás ösvényein című kiállítás margójára)
A
nnyi első látásra bizonyos, hogy a sok műfajú – úgymint művészkönyv-készítő, könyvillusztrátor, gyermekkönyv-illusztrátor – szerző valamennyi műfajban megszerzett tapasztalata szerephez jut ezeken a festményeken.
A bolyongás helyét hívhatjuk akár léleknek is.
Lássunk is mindjárt hozzá – ne a megfejtésükhöz – a befogadásukhoz.

Thoughts about the works of art of István Damó (About the exhibition entitled „Path of the tranquility”)
A
t first glance it is sure, that all the experience that this versatile artist gained in various genres, such as artist’s book maker, illustrator and children’s book illustrator, plays a role in these works of art. You can detect it in the low-keyed or even contrasting colour palette, in the fresh and unrepeatable forms which recall the infantile world and in the playful-ironizing functioning of the mind or of the instinct, that arranges them. First of all I had to bethink, what kind of genre do the exhibited works represent. Of course, we do not need to docket everything, one may say, but in order to be able to speak about something that does not bear the simple figurative/descriptive speech, we have to think about a genre-definition that would serve as akind of crutch for ourselves. As to myself I would re legate the works of art which you can see here – but go ahead and argue about this boldly – into the entity and sphere of action of the surrealism. All the more, because in this way we can bring up a series of questions without having to answer them at any rate, cause only by proposing them, you already get an answer. Such a question would be for example, whether the world on Damó’s works is in the state of decomposition, or rather its pieces are looking for their mates to put together the whole, recognazible and decodable world, which would mean, that that world were in the stadium of adjustment. That is the point, where we should label the creative attitude of the artist as optimistic or pessimistic. Provided that we should do this. But fortunately we do not need that move.
12
Such a selfresponding question is, too, why is not there any horizon on these works, only at best a suspension point or centerline. If you do not need to give an answer to something, you gladly do it, so I shall do it now, too. Presumably, there is not any horizon, because the artist can only grant the freedom of floating to some pieces of reality that lurk behind forms, if he draws them off from the influence of the everyday – let us say – earthly gravitation and sets them over into the attraction of another kind of gravitation, creating in this way a dance of forms in the big airy space or in the big airy void of that work of art. Should somebody conclude from this, that Damó works at random, and puts his forms here or there optionally, according to his moods, I must disappoint that person. These works are adjusted in their apparent spontaneity according to very severe structural rules. We might even characterize that a kind of designed suddenness. Lautréamont defined beauty somehow in this way: beauty is the meeting of a sewing-machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table. Well, if we may call István Damó a surrealist, then he belongs to the onirical surrealists – he designs, makes up and builds up dream and fantasy and emotion forms – to this he needs an intense selfdiscipline and a great deal of workmanship. The sewing-machine and the umbrella meet each other on the dissecting table, but their encounter is not an accident, but the result of the intention of the artist.
This also implies, that according to importance, he likes the diagonal arrangment on his works, which is, as we all know, one of the most preffered solutions of classical painting, at his suspensions he moves the proportions towards golden section. But the diagonal and the golden section, if it is not rigid, are not metered with the ruler, because so one of the most important piles of the arrangement of the image – the play – would dissipate. And as we know, one may only play seriously ... Concretizing the paintings would be certainly an insolvable task now, but if we accept their starting thesis, namely, that Damó creates a lyrical surrealism in his works, or putting it in another way, that a lyrical surrealism arranges Damó’s lifeand experience-elements into pictures, then implicitly we have to deal with the reincarnation of dreams, memories and emotions. Let us bethink, in our dreams every connection is possible, and just the very opposite of something may be also true, the memories are recoloured by the present and the elapsed time of the person, who is recollecting them, and the emotions can only be caught on with the help of intuition and improvisation, because they are formless and they wreathe somewhere in us mainly in amorf shapes. But we might call the place of this roaming the „soul” itself. But if these works of art do not have an earthly gravitation, what then? These forms seemingly hang in the air, figuratively they hang, float and exist in the nil, and yet we do not have the feeling, that they could fall down, or would pull off or abandon each other. This is certainly due to the fact, that their existance and arrangement is not led by a causal ration but by their dream-, vision- and emotion-being which naturally do not get into touch with the laws and operating system of everyday being. Here we come to the question, whether it is substance, that is visualized on the paintings of István Damó, or it is something more or less than that. And we would ask, if there were an answer: What is the substance of dreams? The substance of memories? And what is the substance of emotions?
And if the artist spoke about the fact, that just the reading of the works of Benő Karácsony aroused in him these and only these arrangements (the title of the exhibition corresponds with the booktitle of Benő Karácsony), then we should also ask, what is the substance of impression respectively of reflection? Is it not the thing, that Damó attempts to seize and record immateriality? I do not know, and perhaps he could not respond to this question, either. When somebody asked Becket, who is Godot, he only answered, if I knew it, I would have written it in my play. About the novel of Benő Karácsony one of the reviewers wrote: it is characterized by an exquisite portrayal of the cha racters, irony, self-derision, sense of humour, briskness. From this point of view – but only concerning the viewpoint – the worlds of Karácsony and Damó are connate: I qoute: irony, selfderision, sense of humour, briskness... So, important is, that the artist is looking for and seeking for those forms and proportions, those arrangements and inner gravitations along which this world – and the world itself – can be built further and further. Let us not be inquisitive about the thing, whether the forms which appear on the paintings are human figures or not, whether they are some delineations of the human world, or they are rather some structures, because the human being itself is a kind of structure and his world is even more the pile of various structures. I consider, that is important, that we’d aim to receive these compositions into our soul ten times rather than try to understand them. We should let these works through us, like we use to do with music or poetry in a moment of meditation, and in that momentum reception will turn to interpretation, gesture will turn to artistic experience. It is seemingly a simple formula, but only at the extent of the simpleness of the works swinging here. Lets pitch into their reception – and no way into their decoding. Tibor Zalán writer
