Relevant education 2013 – 2014
Master of Science, Economic Geography (Business Geography) Utrecht University Cum laude The graduate programme focuses on government, business and consumers. Their spatial strategies and behaviours are examined. Students also investigate the development of regions and the role of government policies. Graduates are able to critically conduct and evaluate both scientific and societally relevant research on an academic level. My thesis (change from within: dynamics and employment growth; in Dutch: ‘verandering van binnenuit: dynamiek en werkgelegenheids-groei’) investigates the link between business dynamics and employ-ment. It utilizes both qualitative and quantitative methods. Further, extensive use of Geographic Information Systems is made. It was graded an 8,5 (on a ten-point scale) by dr. Han Olden and prof. dr. Frank van Oort. The quantitative analysis is based on several econometric models. These are primarily based on OLS (Ordinary Least Squares) methods and used in conjunction with longitudinal firm-level data for the entirety of the Netherlands between 1996 and 2012. The thesis employs the recently developed entropy measures related and unrelated variety. The qualitative analysis is based on in-depth interviews, for instance with a high-level official (the ambassador to the North-West Netherlands).
2011 – 2013
Honours College Geosciences Utrecht University The Honours programme gives enthusiastic and promising students the opportunity to develop their academic competencies. During my studies I conducted several research projects, for instance detailing the relationship between weather and bicycle use. Moreover, I also studied agricultural clusters and wrote an Honours thesis (article). Further, the Honours programme challenges students to develop extracurricular activities. I chose to develop a new digital platform for Honours students. The platform was developed in Microsoft Sharepoint and uses Google APIs to investigate user-experience. 2
2010 – 2013
Honours Bachelor of Science, Human Geography and Planning Utrecht University Human Geographers strive to understand the development of cities and regions. Spatial aspects of this development primarily catch their attention. During my studies, I completed two majors: Economic Geography and Geographic Information Systems. I also completed courses in political geography, globalization, development geography, migration and real estate. Driven by my academic interest, I completed the Honours programme for excelling students. The study programme was 210 ECTS instead of 180 credits due to additional courses and activities. My Honours thesis was written as an English academic article (title: LETS to the people). It investigates the spatial distribution of Local Exchange Trading Systems in the Netherlands. Both quantitative and qualitative methods are utilized. In addition to a logistic regression, ten in-depth interviews were conducted with leading volunteers in Dutch LETS programmes. The end result was graded 8,5 (on a tenpoint scale) by prof. dr. Oedzge Atzema and prof. dr. Frank van Oort.
