Jiří Bělohlávek, Charles Dutoit, Roger Norrington, Zubin Mehta, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Kurt Masur) a je častým hostem mnoha koncertních pódií Evropy (Vídeň, Londýn, Paříž, Mnichov, Frankfurt, Lucern, Basilej, Řím, Vatikán, Norimberk, Drážďany, Praha aj.). Sbor pořídil řadu oceňovaných nahrávek pro česká a zahraniční vydavatelství. Za nahrávku duchovních motet Antona Bucknera těleso získalo prestižní cenu Echo Klassik 2007 a snímek Lisztova oratoria Christus byl v Německu oceněn jako „nahrávka roku 2007“.

Německý dirigent Heiko Mathias Förster patří k nejpozoruhodnějším operním dirigentům střední generace. Původně se zdálo, že je předurčen pro dráhu klavíristy. Hře na tento nástroj se věnoval již od svých čtyř let, v šesti letech byl přijat ke studiu na konzervatoři a v deseti letech se stal laureátem národní klavírní soutěže. Zájem o operní žánr ho však později přivedl ke studiu dirigování a i v této oblasti brzy dosáhl významných úspěchů: ještě před dokončením studií byl ve svých třiadvaceti letech jmenován šéfdirigentem divadla v Brandenburgu a v roce 1999 přijal nabídku na post šéfdirigenta Mnichovských symfoniků, kde působil do roku 2006. V letech 2007–2014 stál v čele Nové filharmonie Vestfálsko a od počátku současné sezóny je šéfdirigentem Janáčkovy filharmonie Ostrava. Förster má na svém kontě několik desítek nastudování oper (včetně tří ve Státní opeře Praha) a stovky koncertů s mnoha významnými světovými orchestry. Spolupracuje také s renomovanými operními sólisty (Angela Gheorghiu, Rolando Villazón, Joseph Calleja aj.).

Not much is known about the circumstances of the origins of Dvořák's first operatic work: why the young composer (a violist for the Prague Provisional Theatre at the time) decided, in the late 1860s, to compose a large-scale historical opera to an over 50-year-old German text. According to the dates penned in the autograph score, we can only reliably state that the opera – or, to be precise, the fair copy of the full score – was written in 1870, and that the composer completed work on the individual acts (and subsequently on the overture) on May 26, July 7, September 9, and October 19 of that year. Whatever the reasons for the choice of text—some Dvořák scholars speculate that perhaps the composer could not afford to use an original Czech libretto because he would have had to purchase the rights to it from the librettist, as was common for the time period—it is clear that this subject had been used for literary and musical adaptations on numerous previous occasions in the 18th and 19th centuries. The earliest adaptation as a musical drama was Alfred the Great, first performed as a masque (or theatrical play with music) in 1740 at the summer residence of the British crown prince. It was later also presented in London in 1745 as an oratorio, and in 1753 as an opera. The composer of the music (which included the closing, oft-cited patriotic song, “Rule Britannia!“ that later enjoyed great popularity) was Thomas Arne (1710-1778), and the text was by David Mallet and James Thomson, who later earned his place in music history as the author of the libretto of Joseph Haydn's oratorio The Seasons. Other works on this subject include an early opera by Gaetano Donizetti titled Alfredo il Grande, performed in Naples in 1823, and the Grand Heroic Opera in four acts, König Alfred, by composer Joachim Raff, performed in Weimar in 1851. Poet Karl Theodor Körner (1791–1813), whose libretto Alfred der Große Dvořák chose as the basis of his opera, was a well-known figure during his time as well. Although he died before reaching his 22nd birthday (of complications from an injury sustained as a volunteer with the Prussian army in a battle against Napoleonic forces), he nevertheless left in his wake a fairly extensive and remarkably mature body of work that included poetry and dramatic plays, as well as several operatic librettos. His collected works, first published in 1834 through the efforts of the poet's mother, were published a number of times, and seemingly without any changes until at least the end of the 19th century.

Sopranistka Jarmila Baxová (Rowena), sólistka opery Severočeského divadla v Ústí nad Labem, představuje všestrannou interpretku, jejíž umělecké působení zahrnuje širokou škálu operního, koncertního i operetního repertoáru. Na jevišti ztvárnila řadu stěžejních rolí v operách Mozartových (Pamina, Konstanze, Donna Anna, Zuzanka), Smetanových (Barče, Blaženka), Verdiho (Gilda, Violetta) či Pucciniho (Lauretta, Mimi) a mnoha dalších. V roce 2001 debutovala jako Violetta v pražském Národním divadle a hostuje i na dalších scénách včetně Hudebního divadla Karlín, s jehož inscenací Straussova Netopýra absolvovala turné po Japonsku. Symfonický orchestr Českého rozhlasu patří k nejvýznamnějším a nejstarším orchestrům v České republice. Po mnoho desítek let představuje univerzální symfonické těleso s širokým záběrem repertoáru z oblasti koncertní i operní hudby. Jako stálí nebo hostující dirigenti s orchestrem spolupracovali např. Václav Talich, Karel Ančerl, Václav Neumann a Charles Mackerras. Bezmála čtvrt století ho umělecky vedl Vladimír Válek, současným šéfdirigentem je Ondrej Lenárd. Řada světových hudebních skladatelů provedla s orchestrem vlastní skladby: Sergej Prokofjev, Aram Chačaturjan a další. Orchestr se vždy intenzivně věnoval nahrávací činnosti a má zásluhu na vzniku zvukových záznamů mnoha děl českých klasiků, která nejsou běžnou součástí repertoáru. Týká se to mj. i méně uváděné operní tvorby Antonína Dvořáka (nahrávky oper Král a uhlíř, Tvrdé palice, Vanda, Šelma sedlák, Dimitrij). Vzhledem k této tradici lze Symfonický orchestr Českého rozhlasu považovat za ideálního prostředníka pro vzkříšení Dvořákovy opery Alfred. Český filharmonický sbor Brno patří dnes ve svém oboru k evropské špičce. Jeho zakladatelem, hudebním ředitelem a sbormistrem je Petr Fiala, pod jehož vedením se sbor za relativně krátkou dobu své existence (založen 1990) vypracoval 29

Letos sedmačtyřicetiletý barytonista Jörg Sabrowski (Gothron), rodák ze severoněmeckého Kielu, vyrůstal v Chile. Zpěv studoval na Vysoké hudební a divadelní škole v Hamburgu, mj. u proslulého finského pěvce a pedagoga Toma Krause. Od roku 1994 je stálým členem opery v Kielu, na jejímž jevišti ztvárnil množství stěžejních rolí světového repertoáru, mj. Hrabětě i Figara v Mozartově Figarově svatbě, titulní postavu v Bartókově opeře Modrovousův hrad či Donnera a Gunthera ve Wagnerově „Prstenu“. Z české hudby má na repertoáru Revírníka z Janáčkových Příhod lišky Bystroušky. Je častým hostem na mnoha dalších předních německých scénách a koncertních pódiích (Hanover, Kassel, Lipsko, Bonn aj.). Jako koncertní pěvec se Sabrowski věnuje převážně duchovnímu repertoáru (Mesiáš, Německé Requiem, Vánoční oratorium aj.). Pod taktovkou Helmutha Rillinga zpíval part Krista v Bachových Matoušových a Janových pašijích.
As a librettist, Körner was valued by his contemporaries as well, and his poetic and dramatic texts were set by composers such as Carl Maria von Weber and Franz Schubert. Similarly, Alfred der Große as a libretto is sophisticated and skillfully written, with an understanding of the possibilities and principles of operatic dramaturgy of the time. The plot, originally divided into two acts, is relatively simple. Its background hints at the influence of the genre of “Rescue Opera“ from the turn of the 19th century, which is defined as an opera with spoken dialogue whose main conflict lies in the protagonist finding himself or herself facing grave danger and certain death, only to be successfully rescued in the end. The underlying message of this particular storyline, which praises and celebrates the victorious battle between early Britons and hostile invaders, clearly parallels the patriotic efforts of the Germans in the final phases of the Napoleonic wars. – At the same time, it seems that this libretto does not in any way limit its application in other musical dramatic techniques and treatments, namely those that did not develop fully until French Grand Opéra around 1830. The primary characteristics of Grand Opéra include the composition and arrangement of expansive “scenic pictures“ (tableaux), where the chorus plays a significant role as the “collective hero,“ into which individual solos and duets—as well as a diverse variety of ensembles—are organically incorporated. There is every indication that, in his composition of Alfred, Dvořák was compositionally inclined towards this newer and still topical dramaturgical treatment. In his setting of König's text, Dvořák set the first act to music with almost no changes, but later divided König's original second act into two parts, and in the end slightly truncated the text by leaving out one of the ensembles (a duet) of the secondary characters Roven and Sieward. In light of the fact that this is the composer's first operatic work, it is important to mention that Dvořák was able to demonstrate a remarkable assurance, primarily in his comprehension and handling of the implied operatic dramaturgy techniques. This, in my opinion, resulted in a viable musical drama that deserves at least the occasional performance on today's operatic stages, almost 150 years after its creation. The performance challenges, however, are not insignificant, and some solo parts (Alvina, Harald) are vocally quite exposed. There is no record of whether or not the composer ever attempted to have Alfred performed during his lifetime at the Provisional Theatre, the National Theatre in

Potvrzuje to řada jeho vystoupení a nahrávek, které zahrnují prakticky všechna skladatelova stěžejní díla tohoto žánru. Německý tenorista Tilmann Unger (Dorset a Posel) studoval na univerzitách ve Freiburgu a Würzburgu. Na jevišti debutoval jako Lenský v Čajkovského opeře Evžen Oněgin. V letech 2007–2012 byl členem Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz v Mnichově. Na svém kontě má řadu stěžejních rolí světového operního repertoáru: Pelleas (Pelléas et Mélisande), Narraboth (Salome), Max (Čarostřelec), Siegmund a Siegfried (Prsten Nibelungův) aj. Má zkušenosti také s českou hudbou, ze které má na repertoáru 28

Prague, or any other German stages in the Czech lands or elsewhere. We only know that, at the beginning of the 1880s, he worked on a concert arrangement of the opera's overture, and in this context also reviewed and revised his autograph score. However, this performance never occurred, and the piece was only performed and subsequently published under the title Dramatic (or Tragic) Overture after Dvořák's death in 1905 and 1912, respectively. The first performances of excerpts from the opera in the original language were presented in the autumn of 1938 during a German broadcast by Czechoslovak Radio in Prague. Soon after, in December of 1938, the opera was premiered in Czech translation in the Olomouc municipal theatre. Due to the tense political situation of the 2nd Czechoslovak Republic at the time and the impending occupation by Hitler's German forces—which took place a few weeks later in March 1939—the opera was performed only six times during this run. The first recording of Dvořák's Alfred, therefore, at least partially repays the decades-long debt to the composer, whose operatic oeuvre (perhaps with the exception of Rusalka) has yet to gain recognition, and stands in the shadows of his successful orchestral and chamber works. At the same time, it also provides enthusiasts the unique opportunity to familiarize themselves with one of the key works of the composer's early period, and to gain a better understanding of the direction of his creative development in the late 1860s and early 1870s.
Sopranistka Petra Froese (Alvina) studovala zpěv v Praze a dlouhodobě spolupracuje s renomovanou pěveckou pedagožkou Irmgard Boas v Drážďanech. V německy mluvících zemích také realizuje podstatnou část svého uměleckého působení: mj. v roce 2007 vystoupila se Symfonickým orchestrem bavorského rozhlasu jako sólistka v provedení Mendelssohnovy scénické hudby Sen noci svatojánské a o rok později provedla se stejným tělesem písně z Griegova Peer Gynta. Účinkuje také ve velkých kantátových a oratorních dílech klasického repertoáru, jako je Mozartovo Requiem a Korunovační mše, Beethovenova Chorální fantazie nebo Brahmsovo Německé requiem. Z díla Antonína Dvořáka má na repertoáru např. sólový part ve Stabat mater, se kterým se představila roku 2012 publiku ve Frankfurtu.
Synopsis: The opera takes place in southern England in the second half of the 9th century, when the British Isles and neighboring parts of continental Europe were under constant threat of raids by Danish Vikings.
Mladý barytonista Felix Rumpf (Alfred) pochází z německého Halle. Zde také získával své první hudební zkušenosti jako člen místního pěveckého sboru. Zpěv studoval na Vysoké hudební škole v Drážďanech, mj. u proslulého pěvce a pedagoga Olafa Bära. Absolvoval také mistrovské kurzy u Dietricha Fischera-Dieskaua a Petera Schreiera. Veřejnosti se představil již během vysokoškolských studií, mj. jako Papageno v Mozartově Kouzelné flétně nebo Agamemnon v Offenbachově Krásné Heleně. Intenzivně se věnuje interpretaci německého písňového repertoáru, zejména dílu Franze Schuberta a Johannesa Brahmse. V právě probíhající sezóně absolvuje v různých evropských městech řadu koncertů z díla Jana Dismase Zelenky s dirigentem Václav Luksem.
Act I Danish warriors, led by young prince and commander, Harald, are celebrating their victory over the army of British King Alfred. Only Gothron, an old and experienced warrior, does not share in the general excitement of the troops. He is musing over his prophetic dream from the night before, and warns Harald not to rejoice prematurely. 6
Ferdinand von Bothmer (Harald), renomovaný německý tenorista, se narodil v Mnichově a hudební vzdělání získal na Vysoké hudební škole ve Vídni. Od roku 1999 je členem souboru vídeňské Volksoper, kde ztvárnil mj. řadu mozartovských rolí (Tamino, Titus, Don Ottavio). Na pozvání Plácida Dominga hostoval ve washingtonské opeře a v milánské La Scale zpíval pod taktovkou Riccarda Mutiho. V roce 2005 debutoval na salcburském festivalu v Schumannově Manfredovi, v roce 2007 vystoupil v titulní roli v Rossiniho Otellovi na operním festivalu v Pesaru. Bothmer se soustavně věnuje také koncertnímu repertoáru. Na svých recitálech uvádí převážně písňovou tvorbu Johannesa Brahmse, Roberta Schumanna, Franze Schuberta a Richarda Strausse.

German conductor Heiko Mathias Förster is one of the most outstanding operatic conductors of his generation. Early on, it seemed that Förster was predestined for a career as a pianist. He had begun playing the piano by the age of four, at six was admitted to the conservatory, and by ten years of age had won a national piano competition. Later, however, his interest in opera lead him to study conducting, in which he soon garnered major success, having been named principal conductor of the theatre in Brandenburg even before he completed his studies at the young age of twenty-three. Additionally, in 1999 he accepted the post of principal conductor of the Munich Symphony where he served until 2006. He served as music director of the New Westphalia Philharmonic from 2007 to 2014, and has begun his 2014/2015 as principal conductor of the Janáček Philharmonic in Ostrava. Förster has several dozen opera productions under his belt, including three at the Prague State Opera, as well as hundreds of concerts with many prominent international orchestras. Förster also works with renowned operatic soloists such as Angela Gheorghiu, Rolando Villazón, and Joseph Calleja.
Gothron reminds the young prince that King Alfred escaped and is still alive, and will surely stage a retaliation. Harald, however, does not take this warning seriously, and believes that the aging Gothron is simply envious of his success and military glory. Among the British captives held by the Danes is Alvina, the betrothed of King Alfred. Harald has asked for her to be brought before him, and asks her to become his bride and wife that very same day. After Alvina proudly and decisively rejects his overtures, Harald threatens her with harsh imprisonment and punishment. Act II In a desolate, rocky forest landscape, Alfred contemplates his situation after losing the battle. As he thinks about the people who have remained loyal to him, he decides to continue to fight and lead his people to victory once and for all. The king then comes upon his old servant, Sieward, who recounts to him how Alvina had fallen into the hands of Danish captors during the battle, and how he himself escaped a dire fate by seeking refuge in the nearby dwelling of an impoverished harper. Alfred immediately decides that he must rescue Alvina by staging a ruse in which he dresses up as the harper and infiltrates the Danish camps. At the same time, in light of the anticipated decisive battle, he will also conduct a reconnaissance mission to reveal any possible military weaknesses of the opposing army. Under the barred window of the tower in which Alvina is being held stands Alfred (in his harper’s guise), together with Sieward, listening to her lament over her unhappy fate. They answer her, and encourage her to not lose hope because freedom is nigh. Alvina recognizes Alfred’s voice, and expresses renewed hope and courage. Outside the gates of the Danish castle, Alfred and Sieward meet Gothran, who orders Alfred be brought into the courtyard to perform his songs, while Sieward, as a purported British spy, is dragged away to prison. In the final scene, Harald and Gothron quarrel once again, which very nearly leads to a murderous duel. Subsequently, Alfred is brought before the prince, and in his harper’s costume sings a romance about a people who lived a peaceful life in their homeland until they were attacked by enemy forces and were forced to defend themselves with all their might. All those present, including Gothron, listen with growing unease and suspi7

cion. Finally, Alfred discards his harper’s disguise, and stands before them in his full royal glory. Gothron recognizes in him the figure from his prophetic dream. In the meantime, Alvina has managed to escape from her prison, and appears on the scene to seize the torches from the hands of the guards, and throw them into the well in the courtyard. In the ensuing chaos and darkness, she and Alfred flee to safety.
The Czech Philharmonic Choir of Brno is currently one of the finest European ensembles in its field. Established only twenty-four years ago in 1990, under the leadership of its founder, music director and choirmaster Petr Fiala, it has already become one of the most sought-after large choruses. The ensemble has worked with many conductors both from the Czech Republic and from abroad, including Jiří Bělohlávek, Charles Dutoit, Roger Norrington, Zubin Mehta, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Simon Rattle, and Kurt Masur, and is a frequent guest on numerous concert stages in Vienna, London, Paris, Munich, Frankfurt, Lucerne, Basel, the Vatican, Nürnberg, Dresden, Prague, and other cities across Europe. The chorus has made many critically-acclaimed recordings for both Czech and foreign labels. It won the prestigious Echo Klassik award in 2007 for its recording of motets by Anton Bruckner, and its recording of Liszt’s oratorio Christus was declared ‘recording of the year 2007’ in Germany. The Choir is supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Southern Moravia Region, Statutory City of Brno, and TESCAN ORSAY HOLDING.
Act III In a secluded forest landscape, the British and their military commander, Dorset, welcome the dawning of a new day. Alvina emerges from her cave hideout, and announces that Alfred was rescued, but had then immediately set off to reunite with the rest of his troops that were waiting for him in the valley nearby. Dorset and his men leave to join Alfred. Alvina remains, alone, and awaits Alfred’s triumphant return. Instead of Alfred, however, she is surprised by Harald, who renews his advances and asks for her hand, eventually taking her captive. In the meantime, Dorset’s and Alfred’s military retinue meet in the center of the forest, and in communal prayer ask for the Lord’s blessing in advance of the impending final battle. At that very same moment, Harald’s advances on the once again imprisoned Alvina escalate, and he threatens that if she does not concede, he will have her killed along with all of the other British captives. Alvina subsequently beseeches her brethren to gather their courage, rebel against their captors, and break through the prison gates. Immediately thereafter, the victorious chorus of the British can be heard in the background signaling that they have penetrated the courtyard of Harald’s headquarters. Gothron has already succumbed in battle to Alfred’s sword, and Harald is defeated in a duel with Dorset. The victorious Alfred offers Harald mercy under the condition that he sail away to his homeland, never to return. Harald, however, does not take this offer, and dies at his own hand instead. Alvina and Alfred rejoice in their reunion and in the joyfulness of love while their onlookers exalt the glory of the royal couple and express their hope for a future of peace and freedom that they are prepared to fiercely protect and defend if the need should ever arise again. 8
One of the most prominent as well as the one of the oldest orchestral ensembles in the Czech Republic, the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra has served for many decades as a universal symphonic ensemble with a broad repertoire of both concert and operatic music. Permanent and guest conductors have included such prominent figures as Václav Talich, Karel Ančerl, Václav Neumann and Charles Mackerras. For almost a quarter of a century, the orchestra was led by Vladimir Válek and its current principal conductor is Ondrej Lenárd. Additionally, many world-renowned composers have conducted their own compositions at the helm of this ensemble, including Sergei Prokofiev and Aram Khachaturian. The orchestra has always been very active in its recording activities, and deserves accolades for its recordings of numerous works by the Czech greats that are not commonly considered a part of the standard repertoire. These include several of the less frequently heard operas of Antonín Dvořák such as King and Charcoal Burner, The Stubborn Lovers, Vanda, The Cunning Peasant, and Dmitri. This tradition of performances makes the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra the ideal vehicle for the resurrection of Dvořák’s Alfred. 25

conductors, including C. M. Giullini, Simon Rattle, and Helmuth Rilling, and with orchestras such as the Vienna Philharmonic and the Orchestre de Paris. He is a regular guest at international music festivals like Prague Spring, the Salzburg Festival, and the BBC Proms in London, and appears in concerts at venues that include Musikverein in Vienna, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Accademia di Santa Cecilia in Rome, and Suntory Hall in Tokyo. As a soloist, Mikuláš is considered a specialist in the large-scale choral works of Antonín Dvořák, evidenced by his numerous performances and recordings that consist of virtually all the composer’s principal works in this genre.
Historical background: The opera’s main character, Alfred, is based on the historical figure of Alfred the Great (849–899), who, in 871, became the king of Wessex (today a county in southern England), with its capital of Winchester. During his reign, he repeatedly and successfully warred with Danish Vikings, who were staging regular pillaging raids during this period not only in the British Isles, but in continental Europe as well. Throughout these clashes, Alfred continued to seek allies in neighboring English counties and principalities, which he then gradually subjugated and united under his rule. In times of peace—or rather, in the intervals between battles—he worked on not only reorganizing the armies and naval fleet, but also on the reformation of the systems of legislation and taxation. Above all, however, he supported culture and education, which, at the time, were cultivated primarily in monasteries. He himself was extraordinarily educated for his time, which meant that he could not only read and write, but his knowledge of the Latin language was extensive enough that he reportedly could translate the philosophical and theological writings of Roman authors and church priests as well as parts of the bible into his native tongue. Alvina (Alwina in T. Körner’s libretto), it seems, is modeled after the wife of King Alfred, Ealhswith, who married the king in 868, gave birth to his five or six children (sons), and eventually entered a convent following her husband’s death, where she died late 902. Gothron, listed as Guthrum († circa 890) in historical sources, was a Viking military leader and the ruler of the Danish-controlled eastern part of England (known as the Danelaw, whose capital was York). King Alfred the Great fought with him numerous times with varying success. Alfred ultimately and definitively defeated him in 878, and forced him to receive baptism, in which the king reportedly presided as godfather. Other characters (Harald in particular), as well as the entire story line of the opera, are fictional. Dorset is not a personal name, but the name of a county in southwestern England belonging to the territories of Alfred the Great in the 8th century.
German tenor Tilmann Unger (Dorset and Messenger) studied at the universities in Freiburg and Würzburg and marked his operatic stage début as Lensky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. From 2007 to 2012 he was a regular soloist with the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. He has performed numerous major roles from the international operatic repertoire including Pelléas in Pelléas et Mélisande, Narraboth in Salome, Max in Der Freischütz, and both Siegmund and Siegfried in Der Ring des Nibelungen. His roles from the Czech repertoire include Jeník in Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, and Števa in Jenůfa as well as Albert Gregor in The Makropulos Affair by Janáček. Unger performs in major concert works as well, with performances of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde. This year marked his début as the title character in Wagner’s Parsifal in Innsbruck, and in 2015 he will appear in the same role in Wuppertal. Soprano Jarmila Baxová (Rowena), a regular soloist with the opera of the North Bohemian Theatre in Ústí nad Labem, is a versatile performer whose artistic work covers a broad range of operatic, operetta, and concert repertoire. On stage, she has performed numerous major roles in operas by Mozart (Pamina, Konstanze, Donna Anna, and Susanna), Smetana (Barče, Blaženka), Verdi (Gilda, Violetta), and Puccini (Lauretta, Mimi), and many others. In 2001, she débuted as Violetta at the National Theatre in Prague, and appears as a guest on other stages as well, including the Karlín Musical Theatre, with whom she toured Japan in a production of Strauss’s Die Fledermaus. 24

Ich war schon beim ersten Lesen der Partitur elektrisiert von Dvořák’s interessanten Ideen. Seine erste große Oper ist voll von überraschenden harmonischen und rhythmischen Wendungen. Mutig und modern. Er befindet sich in einer Reihe mit vielen anderen bedeutenden Komponisten, die schon bei ihrem ersten großen Werk überzeugend auf ihr großes Talent aufmerksam gemacht haben. In den Monaten der Vorbereitung bis hin zum Konzert habe ich mich seine Operregelrecht verliebt und hoffe, daß bald andere Dirigenten und Theater Dvořák’s “Alfred” präsentieren.

Already appearing in public performances during his college studies, he performed such roles as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute and Agamemnon in Offenbach’s La belle Héle ` ne. Felix is also very active in the performance of German art song repertoire, focusing particularly on songs by Franz Schubert and Johannes Brahms. This season, he will be performing works by Jan Dismas Zelenka in a number of cities throughout Europe with conductor Václav Luks.
Heiko Mathias Förster
Born in the northern city of Kiel in Germany, baritone Jörg Sabrowski (Gothron) was raised in Chile. He studied voice at the Hamburg University of Music and Theater with such teachers as prominent Finnish singer and pedagogue Tom Krause. Since 1994, he has appeared regularly as a soloist with the opera in Kiel, where he has performed numerous major roles from the standard international repertoire such as Count Almaviva and Figaro in Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, the title role in Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle, and as Donner and Gunther in Wagner’s Ring cycle. Additionally, he also garnered much success in The Flying Dutchman and in Berg’s Wozzeck. Czech works in his repertoire include the Gamekeeper in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen. Sabrowski is a frequent guest in many other leading German and international opera houses and concert halls, with performances in Berlin, Hannover, Kassel, Leipzig, Bonn, Graz, Santiago de Chile, Oslo, Athens, and Valencia, in works with such conductors as David Shallon, Adam Fischer, and Kent Nagano. As a concert singer, he focuses primarily on sacred music, performing such works as Handel’s Messiah, the German Requiem by Brahms, and Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. Additionally, under the baton of Helmuth Rilling, he has performed the part of Christ in both the St. Matthew and St. John passions by J. S. Bach.
It seems almost incredible that, in the case of a composer of such stature and renown as Antonín Dvořák, only now at last do we have a recording (and a very respectable one) of such a large and important item in his oeuvre as his first opera, Alfred. When I say ’renown’ I must of course qualify that epithet by admitting that Dvořák is known outside his own country mainly as a composer of instrumental music and that even ’at home’ he bears the partial stigma of a composer somewhat lacking in ’dramatic talent’ – this despite the fact that his powerfully-dramatic Rusalka has always been, since its premiere in 1901, the Czech opera performed most often in Prague after Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, and in recent decades has finally become a hit around the globe as well. Personally I consider the image of the ’undramatic Dvořák’ (as he was called already by some music critics in his own time) to be mainly a fluke of reception history. When Dvořák’s music first made its way to the operatic stage in 1874 Bedřich Smetana was already accepted as the founder of Czech ’national’ opera (in an era obsessed with nationality), and Dvořák, whose operas are less conspicuously ’Czech’ (witness Alfred, to a German text and set in England), was viewed as important for adding to Czech musical repertoire what Smetana lacked, namely a large output of ’absolute’ music for orchestra and chamber ensembles. Anyway it was well known that Dvořák lacked a broad general education, was not 10

Soprano Petra Froese (Alvina) studied voice in Prague, and has currently been working with renowned vocal pedagogue Irmgard Boas in Dresden. Froese has spent a major part of her career in German-speaking countries, appearing as a soloist in Mendelssohn’s incidental music to A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra (2007), and performing songs from Grieg’s Peer Gynt a year later with the same ensemble, as well as Martinů’s Magic Nights at Gewandhaus Leipzig in 2012. She also performed the role of Elsa from Wagner’s Lohengrin in recital at the Mahler Jihlava Music Festival 2014. Petra has appeared in major works from the classical choral repertoire for soloists, chorus, and orchestra such as Mozart’s Requiem and Coronation masses, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and the German Requiem by Brahms. Additionally, works by Antonín Dvořák in her repertoire include the part of soprano soloist in the Stabat Mater, which she performed in 2012 in Frankfurt (Alte Oper).
widely read and evidently not much interested in literature. So how could he be talented at opera? But he actually wrote more operas than Smetana: eleven of them (counting as we should his two settings of the libretto King and Collier having nothing in common musically as two different works, not different versions). And he began his operatic output (with Alfred) at an earlier age than Smetana, yet with much greater experience in the field: for seven years he had been playing viola almost every evening in the orchestra of the Provisional Czech Theatre, participating in perhaps a thousand performances of operas representing a broad international repertoire. Moreover, we know that when composing his mature operas he took great interest in both the general outline and details of their texts, requesting many changes from their librettists. In the case of his earliest operas we are quite in the dark about the compositional process. But we can be sure he did not collaborate with the librettist of Alfred, Theodor Körner, who was dead for more than half a century! Alfred is a special case in more ways than one. It comes from a phase in Dvořák’s output which he himself later called, not for nothing, his ’crazy period’. He was admittedly intoxicated with the music of Richard Wagner. Yet in his experimentation he at times even went beyond Wagner. (Alfred was completed in 1870, the same year when, evidently, Dvořák wrote his proto-Schoenbergian String Quartet in E minor / B major.) Alfred is an uneven work, and nobody will claim that we have here a neglected masterpiece. Yet it contains many passages of breath-taking beauty, and its faults reflect neither feeble dramatic talent nor lack of experience so much as unfettered invention and almost wild imagination. It shows us a side of Dvořák that is extremely interesting and has remained unknown for too long. David R. Beveridge
Renowned German tenor Ferdinand von Bothmer (Harald) was born in Munich, and acquired his musical education at the College of Music in Vienna. Since 1999, he has been a regular soloist with the Volksoper in Vienna, where his performances have included major roles in operas by W. A. Mozart: Tamino, Tito, and Don Ottavio. At the invitation of Placido Domingo, he performed as a guest with the Washington National Opera, and has also sung under the baton of Riccardo Muti at La Scala in Milan. In 2005, he débuted at the Salzburg Festival in Schumann’s Manfred, and in 2007 appeared in the title role of Rossini’s Otello in the opera festival in Pesaro. Over the past three years, his vocal development has lead him to focus increasingly on the dramatic tenor fach, with his débuts as Erik, Max, Lohengrin, and Manrico to great international acclaim. In addition to the operatic stage, Bothmer is also active in concert repertoire, performing recitals of arts songs primarily by Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Franz Schubert, Franz Liszt, and Richard Strauss. Young German baritone Felix Rumpf (Alfred) hails from Halle, where he gained his primary musical experience as a member of a local choir. He went on to study voice at the College of Music in Dresden, where he worked under instructors such as 22

O okolnostech vzniku Dvořákovy operní prvotiny a o důvodech, proč se mladý skladatel – tehdy violista pražského Prozatímního divadla – rozhodl koncem 60. let 19. století zkomponovat rozměrnou historickou operu na více než padesát let starý německý text, toho mnoho nevíme. Podle datačních údajů zapsaných v autografu můžeme spolehlivě říci pouze to, že opera – nebo spíše její čistopisná partitura – vznikala v průběhu roku 1870, a že práce na jednotlivých dějstvích a posléze na ouvertuře byla ukončena ve dnech 26. 5., 7. 7., 28. 9. a 19. 10. toho roku. Ať již byly důvody jakékoliv – Dvořákovi životopisci spekulují například o tom, že si skladatel nemohl dovolit psát na původní české libreto proto, že by si je podle dobových zvyklostí musel od libretisty zakoupit – jisté je, že se jednalo o námět, který byl předtím v 18. a 19. století vícekrát literárně i hudebně zpracován. Nejstarším hudebně dramatickým ztvárněním byl Alfred the Great, provedený poprvé jako masque (neboli divadelní hra se zpěvy) roku 1740 v letní rezidenci britského korunního prince, a poté v Londýně r. 1745 jako oratorium a r. 1753 jako opera. Autorem hudby, zahrnující mj. závěrečnou – později populární a často citovanou – patriotickou píseň Rule, Britannia!, byl Thomas Arne (1710–1778), text napsali David Mallet a James Thomson – který se později zapsal do dějin hudby také jako autor textové předlohy pro oratorium Roční doby Josepha Haydna. – Z dalších titulů můžeme jmenovat například ranou operu Gaetana Donizettiho Alfredo il Grande uvedenou v Neapoli roku 1823, nebo velkou hrdinskou operu o 4 dějstvích König Alfred skladatele Joachima Raffa, jež byla provedena ve Výmaru roku 1851. – Rovněž básník Karl Theodor Körner (1791–1813), jehož libreto Alfred der Große si zvolil Dvořák, byl ve své době známou osobností. Zemřel sice již v necelých 22 letech na následky zranění, jež utrpěl jako dobrovolník pruské armády v bitvě s napoleonskými vojsky, ale přesto za sebou zanechal poměrně obsáhlé a pozoruhodně vyzrálé literární dílo zahrnující poezii, činoherní dramata i několik operních libret. Jeho sebrané spisy, vydané poprvé r. 1834 péčí básníkovy matky, vycházely poté opakovaně a zdá se v nezměněné podobě nejméně do konce 19. století. Jako libretista byl Körner ceněn již svými současníky, jeho básnické a dramatické texty zhudebnili mj. Carl Maria von Weber a Franz Schubert. Rovněž Alfred der Große je jako libreto napsán velmi kultivovaně a obratně, s porozuměním pro možnosti 12

a zákonitosti dobové operní dramaturgie. Jeho děj, rozvržený původně do dvou jednání, je poměrně jednoduchý. V jeho pozadí tušíme model francouzské „opery záchrany“ přelomu 18. a 19. století, neboli opery s mluvenými dialogy, jejíž zápletka spočívá v tom, že hlavní hrdina či hrdinka se dostává do vážného nebezpečí, je ohrožen/a na životě, avšak nakonec šťastně zachráněn/a. Jeho myšlenkové poselství, vyzdvihující a oslavující vítězný boj dávných Britů s nepřátelskými vetřelci, pak zřetelně koresponduje s patriotickým vzepětím Němců v závěrečné fázi napoleonských válek. – Zároveň toto libreto zdá se nijak nebrání využití jiných hudebně dramaturgických postupů a řešení, zejména těch, které naplno rozvinula teprve velká francouzská opera kolem r. 1830. Jedná se především o komponování a aranžování rozměrných „scénických obrazů“ (tableaux), v nichž hraje podstatnou roli sbor jako „kolektivní hrdina“, a do nichž jsou pak organicky zasazeny jednotlivé sólové výstupy a duety i rozmanité ansámbly. Všechno nasvědčuje tomu, že Dvořák se při kompozici Alfreda přiklonil právě k onomu novějšímu – v jeho době stále aktuálnímu – dramaturgickému řešení. Z Körnerovy předlohy převzal a zhudebnil prakticky beze změny 1. dějství, zatímco původní 2. dějství rozdělil do dvou částí a ve finále text mírně zkrátil tím, že vynechal jeden ansámblový výstup (duet) vedlejších postav Roveny a Siewarda. Uvážíme-li, že jde o jeho operní prvotinu, prokázal v ní pozoruhodnou jistotu především v pochopení a zvládnutí naznačených operně dramaturgických postupů. Vytvořil tak dle mého soudu životaschopné hudebně dramatické dílo, které si zaslouží být aspoň příležitostně provozováno i dnes, téměř sto padesát let po svém vzniku. Jeho interpretační nároky jsou ovšem nemalé, a některé sólové party (Alvina, Harald) jsou pěvecky hodně exponované. Není nic známo o tom, že by skladatel sám usiloval během svého života o provedení Alfreda na scéně Prozatímního či později Národního divadla v Praze, anebo na některé z německých scén v českých zemích či jinde. Víme pouze, že počátkem 80. let 19. století připravoval koncertní uvedení ouvertury k této opeře a v této souvislosti také znovu přehlédl a revidoval svoji autografní partituru. Nicméně k provedení tehdy nedošlo, a skladba pak byla poprvé hrána a poté vydána tiskem pod názvem Dramatická (Tragická) ouvertura teprve po Dvořákově smrti v letech 1905 resp. 1912. 13

K prvnímu uvedení ukázek z opery v originální jazykové verzi došlo 6. února 1938 v tehdejším německém vysílání Československého rozhlasu v Praze. Záhy poté, v prosinci 1938, se konala premiéra opery v českém překladu v městském divadle v Olomouci. Vzhledem k napjaté politické situaci v tehdejší 2. Československé republice a hrozící okupaci ze strany hitlerovského Německa – k níž došlo pár týdnů poté v březnu 1939 – se uskutečnilo pouze šest představení. První nahrávka Dvořákova Alfreda splácí tedy aspoň částečně letitý dluh skladateli, jehož operní dílo je – snad s výjimkou Rusalky – stále ještě nedoceněno a stojí ve stínu jeho úspěšné tvorby orchestrální a komorní. Zároveň dává všem zájemcům jedinečnou možnost seznámit se s jedním z klíčových děl skladatelova raného období a blíže porozumět tomu, jakými cestami se ubíral jeho tvůrčí vývoj na přelomu 60. a 70. let 19. století. Synopse: Děj opery se odehrává v jižní Anglii v druhé polovině 9. století, kdy byly britské ostrovy a přilehlé části kontinentální Evropy ohrožovány nájezdy dánských Vikingů. 1. dějství Dánští bojovníci v čele s mladým knížetem a vojevůdcem Haraldem slaví vítězství, kterého dobyli nad vojskem britského krále Alfreda. Pouze Gothron, starý a zkušený válečník, nesdílí všeobecné nadšení. Myslí na svůj prorocký sen z minulé noci a varuje Haralda, aby se neradoval předčasně. Připomíná mu, že král Alfred unikl a zůstal naživu, a bude jistě připravovat odvetu. Harald však toto varování nebere vážně a domnívá se, že mu stárnoucí Gothron pouze závidí úspěch a vojenskou slávu. – Mezi zajatými Brity a Britkami je také Alvina, snoubenka krále Alfreda. Harald ji nechává přivést a žádá ji, aby se ještě téhož dne stala jeho nevěstou a manželkou. Poté, co Alvina tuto nabídku hrdě a rozhodně odmítá, jí vyhrožuje těžkým žalářem a přísnými tresty.

2. dějství V pusté lesní a skalní krajině rozjímá Alfred nad svou situací po prohrané bitvě. S myšlenkou na lid, který mu zůstal věrný, se rozhodne nevzdávat boj a dovést jej do konečného vítězství. Poté potkává starého sluhu Siewarda, který mu vypráví o tom, jak Alvina během bitvy padla do dánského zajetí, a jak on sám zachránil svůj život tím, že našel úkryt v nedalekém obydlí chudého harfeníka. Alfred se okamžitě rozhodne, že musí Alvinu osvobodit, a to pomocí lsti, když v převleku za harfeníka pronikne do ležení Dánů – a přitom zároveň, s ohledem na předpokládanou budoucí rozhodující bitvu, prozkoumá zblízka jejich případné vojenské slabiny. Pod zamřížovaným oknem věže, v níž je nyní vězněna Alvina, stojí Alfred (v harfenickém převleku) spolu se Siewardem a slyší ji naříkat nad nešťastným osudem. Odpovídají jí a vybízejí ji, aby nezoufala, protože záchrana je nablízku. Alvina poznává Alfredův hlas a vyjadřuje novou naději a odvahu. Před branami dánského hradu pak Alfred a Sieward potkávají Gothrona, který poručí uvést Alfreda dále ke dvoru, aby tam přednesl svoje písně, zatímco Sieward je jako domnělý britský špeh odváděn do vězení. Ve finální scéně se nejprve znovu střetnou Harald a Gothron, přičemž málem dojde k jejich vzájemnému vražednému souboji. Poté je přiveden Alfred, který v převleku harfeníka zpívá romanci o lidu, jenž žil poklidně ve své domovině, dokud nebyl přepaden nepřátelskými válečníky a nemusel se ze všech sil bránit. Přítomní Dánové včetně Gothrona naslouchají se stále větším zneklidněním a podezřením. Nakonec Alfred odhodí harfenický oděv a stojí přede všemi v plné nádheře svého královského majestátu. Gothron v něm poznává postavu ze svého prorockého snu. Alvina – které se mezitím podařilo uniknout z vězení – vytrhne přítomným strážcům z rukou pochodně, hodí je do studny na nádvoří a v nastalém zmatku a tmě prchá spolu s Alfredem pryč.

hned poté se vydal za zbytkem svého vojska, čekajícího v nedalekém údolí. Dorset a jeho lidé odcházejí, aby se připojili k Alfredovi. Alvina zůstává sama a čeká na Alfredův vítězný příchod. Namísto Alfreda se však objeví Harald, který na ni opětovně naléhá a žádá o její ruku, a nakonec ji znovu odvádí do zajetí. Dorsetova a Alfredova vojenská družina se mezitím setkávají uprostřed lesa, a ve společné modlitbě si vyprošují požehnání před nastávající rozhodnou bitvou. V téže chvíli Harald stupňuje svůj nátlak na znovuzajatou Alvinu a hrozí jí, že pokud se mu nepodvolí, nechá spolu s ní zabít všechny zajaté Brity. Alvina poté své soukmenovce vyzývá, aby sebrali odvahu, vzbouřili se a prolomili brány vězení. Vzápětí nato se ozve vítězný zpěv Britů, kteří v čele s Dorsetem pronikají na nádvoří Haraldova sídla. Gothron padl v bitvě pod Alfredovým mečem, Harald je poražen v souboji s Dorsetem. Vítězný Alfred nabízí Haraldovi milost pod podmínkou, že odpluje zpět do své země a nebude se nikdy vracet, avšak Harald jeho nabídku nepřijímá a raději dobrovolně umírá vlastní rukou. Alvina a Alfred se těší z opětovného setkání a ze štěstí lásky, zatímco lid provolává slávu královskému páru a doufá v klidnou a svobodnou budoucnost – kterou však hodlá v případě nového ohrožení ze všech sil hájit a uhájit.

Körnera Alwina) má zdá se předobraz v manželce krále Alfreda jménem Ealhswith, jež se za něho provdala v roce 868, porodila mu pět nebo šest dětí (synů), a po jeho smrti se uchýlila do kláštera, kde zemřela koncem roku 902. Gothron je v historických pramenech uváděn jako Guthrum († ca 890), vikingský vojevůdce a panovník nad Dány ovládané východní části Anglie (tzv. Danelaw se sídelním městem York). Král Alfréd Veliký s ním opakovaně bojoval, a to se střídavými úspěchy. Nakonec ho r. 878 definitivně porazil a donutil ho přijmout křest, při němž byl údajně přítomen jako jeho kmotr. Ostatní postavy (zvl. Harald) i celá dějová zápletka libreta a opery jsou smyšlené. Jméno Dorset není osobní jméno, nýbrž název hrabství v jihozápadní Anglii, patřícího v 9. století k teritoriu Alfréda Velikého.
Historické pozadí: Alfred je Alfréd Veliký (Alfred the Great, 849–899), od r. 871 král Wessexu (dnes hrabství v jižní Anglii), sídlící v městě Winchester. Během své vlády opakovaně a úspěšně bojoval s dánskými Vikingy, kteří v té době ohrožovali pravidelnými loupežnými nájezdy nejenom britské ostrovy, ale i kontinentální Evropu. V průběhu bojů hledal Alfred spojence v sousedních anglických knížectvích a hrabstvích, jež si pak postupně podroboval a sjednocoval je pod svou nadvládou. V dobách míru či spíše v přestávkách mezi boji se snažil mj. o reorganizaci vojska a námořního loďstva, jakož i o reformu daňového systému a zákonodárství. Především však podporoval kulturu a vzdělanost, pěstovanou tehdy hlavně v klášterním prostředí. Sám byl na svou dobu mimořádně vzdělaný, tzn. uměl nejenom číst a psát, ale ovládal i latinu, a to natolik, že mohl údajně překládat do rodného 16
