Woord Vooraf I FOREWORD
In this exhibition catalogue -the 7th in all- I would like to present eighteen Works of Art from Known Masters of the 15th, 16 th and 17th century, all of which can be connected with a concrete workshop or the name of a known artist. When compared to my previous exhibitions, which were mostly devoted to one particular discipline, this catalogue is much wider and more diverse. That is also true regarding discipline, period, provenance as well as the materials used: there are late Gothic sculptures and altar pieces from Brussels and Westphalia, a late 15th-century stucco relief and a private altar from Malines ; a very refined Antwerp hand-bell and a highly important Amsterdam mortar in bronze ; several Limoges enamels from the Renaissance ; a Northern French (Flemish) ea rly pa i nt i ng, a h ither to un k now n
history painting by Cornelis De Vos and even a 17th-century drawing. Nevertheless, there is a unifying factor in all that diversity. It is, indeed, possible to attribute each and every object to a specific artist or workshop. Maybe simply because the object is stamped, signed or monogrammed ; or because it has already been mentioned in the art-historical literature ; or, lastly, because I am able to confirm any such attribution supported by adequate material as well as by stylistic arguments. When compiling the present catalogue I could once again rely on the advice of a number of museum staff and scholars whose unselfish support was indispensable with regard to the attribution, localisation and dating of several objects. My thanks go to Judith Crouch, Reinhard Karrenbrock, Véronique Notin and Katlijne Van der Stighelen and especially to Robert Didier and Hans Vlieghe.

May you, too, succumb to the allure of these Works of Art by Known Masters from the 15th, 16th and 17th century.

1. 1. DE AANBIDDING DER KONINGEN I THE ADORATION OF THE MAGI Hoofdmeester van Rieden (actief: ca.1440-1450) I Chief master of Rieden (active: c.1440-1450) Deze notenhouten groep stelt De Aanbidding der Koningen voor.
The present walnut group represents The Adoration of the Magi. Melchior kneels at the feet of the Virgin Mary who is holding the Child on her lap. As an act of humility he has removed his crown. Behind him stands the black king Caspar, the youngest of The Three Wise Men, and Balthazar, with crown, Phrygian cap and houppelande. Finally, at the far right is Joseph, an onlooker to the scene.
Funchal. Hence we must assume that the present Adoration of the Magi was executed by a very prominent and particularly skilled Brussels woodcarver whose oeuvre was a source of inspiration for the workshop of the altar of Rieden3. That the present piece, moreover, is an absolute unicum is evidenced by the fact that it has hitherto not proved possible to attribute one other known work to the same still anonymous chief master carver.

2. RELIËF: DE VERKONDIGING I RELIEF: THE ANNUNCIATION Naar Hans Wydyz (actief: ca.1480-1525) I After Hans Wydyz (active: c.1480-1525)
This splendid relief in stucco that has to a large extent preserved its original polychromy and gilding represents The Annunciation. The angel Gabriel with a sceptre in his right hand kneels in front of Mary, who is reading a book. She sits under a late-Gothic canopy that is decorated with the figures of three prophets -we recognise Moses in the middle by the clay tablets. The door to her chamber is wide open, revealing a small private retable and an altar over which a frontal is hanging. God the Father, encircled by clouds, appears in the sky and sends Her the Holy Ghost in the form of a dove and a miniature Christ child with a cross. Finally, in the background is a representation of The Visitation, the visit made by the pregnant Mary to her sister, Elisabeth. The present scene is identical in the smallest details to the oak Annunciation in the Bargello, (ill.2a)1, a relief that is traditionally regarded as being an early work by Hans Wydyz (active: c.1480-1525)2.Two contemporary casts (moulages) of this model are known to exist in stucco; one, heavily damaged and with a lot of restoration, is
in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lyons (ill.2b)3. The other, still in a very good condition, belonged up until 1928 to the Fürstlich Hohenzollernschen Sammlung in Sigmaringen4 and since then appears to be ‘missing’. It is the first time in more than eighty years that this relief that was in the meantime in a European private collection, is again in the limelight. The present example is indeed identical to the “Mariä Verkündigung, ... Hochrelief - Papiermasse - Mit alter Bemalung und Vergoldung” in Sigmaringen5, a fact that is evidenced not only by the convincing correspondences with the photo taken in 1925, but also primarily by the presence of the seal and inventory number of the Hohenzollern collection, found on the back of the wooden frame6. Now that the relief has resurfaced and has to a large extent been restored to its original condition -several additions and some overpainting have been removed- which calls for a few remarks with regard to the existing literature. For instance, the present cast is not made of cartapesta (papier-maché), but of stucco7, the same as the example in Lyons, which, by the way, was also classified as cartapesta for a long time. But,
in particular, it has emerged that the wooden frame was included in the dimensions (37,5 X 31 cm) mentioned by Sprinz8. The actual relief measures only 32,8 by 26,4 cm, the size of which is virtually identical to the model in the Bargello and to that of the other cast in Lyons. It is vital to the present case for the measurements to be accurate, since the cast must, of course, have (approximately) the same dimensions as the copied model9.
10
The process of casting moulages in stucco (and cartapesta) was a much more frequent occurrence in the late Middle Ages than is generally thought. Working with casts is cheap, quick and efficient and the rich decorative painting masks the use of commonplace materials and of a simple technique. The majority of such casts may have been intended to be placed in the niche of a small private altar10. It is interesting to note that traces of hinges are clearly visible on the current frame. As this means that this small altar once must have had wings, it is very likely that the current frame is still the original one and, therefore, it probably dates also from the late 15th century.

There are very few surviving moulages in stucco or cartapesta, owing to the delicate character of the material11.What makes this late-Gothic relief an absolute rarity and its traceability a unique event is the fact that the present example, which was believed to be missing, is still in a very fresh condition and in addition, a considerable amount of its original polychromy and gilding is still intact. It is, indeed, probably the best preserved of all casts known.

3. HL.
It is extremely rare for the art trade to come across Gothic sculptures that are so well documented and published as is the case with this magnificent Saint Catherine. We are thus able to trace the provenance of the figure without interruption until 1881, when it was purchased from the Cologne art dealer and collector, Richard Moest, by the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nürnburg. Furthermore, I would like to mention the fact that it left the museum in 1955 in a completely legitimate way, and that this has been confirmed by the current curator in writing1. As mentioned above, this Saint Catherine is cited regularly in the literature. She was first illustrated in a reference book published by the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in 1896, after which there were further references in later museum catalogues and studies on German sculpture, and even citations in general art lexicons. While from the beginning she was localized to Westphalia and dated to approximately the first quarter of the 16th century, Schweitzer was able to attribute her in 1910 to the anonymous master of Osnabruck. Meanwhile the oeuvre of that most prominent Gothic woodcarver from Westphalia has been divided up between the chief master

is derived from contemporary engravings, such as those by Cornelis Floris and Cornelis Bos, who in turn were inspired by Italian Renaissance prints. In that connection it must be pointed out that also the composition on the central panel is after Cornelis Floris de Vriendt. In the Cologne Cathedral there are two marble epitaphs in memory of two brothers, Adolf and Anton von Schauenburg, which were completed by the workshop of Cornelis Floris in 15612. The Resurrection, as depicted on the large relief behind the recumbent figure of Anton von Schauenburg (+ 1558) was after all used as a model for the composition of the alabaster panel on the private altar illustrated here.
From the mid-16th century Malines was an important centre for the production of small gilded and polychrome altars decorated with alabaster reliefs. Especially at the outset of the period (c.1540-1570) the altar pieces were of the highest artistic quality, whereby such reliefs were often fitted into a very lavish and richly gilded frame. The frame of the ensemble presented here comprises an oak support, with two alabaster columns, and is abundantly decorated with putti, garlands, arabesques, triumphal chariot with sphinxes, herms, harnesses, masks, vases, fruit, strapwork and scrollwork. This very exuberant decorum, which is likewise found on the frame of a Malines private altar in a Brussels museum1,

The present gothic mortar has two square handles and a central decoration depicting two horizontal circles. The upper border caption bears, in addition to the names of the original owners (claes * ian + robbys * ende * aecht * syn * huisfrou *), the date 1533. It is interesting to note the presence of an owner’s mark applied to the centre of the inscription on the frieze. The neck of the mortar is embellished with a frieze of ram’s heads enclosed by graceful arabesques.
sent mortar can be considered to be the earliest surviving Amsterdam mortar anywhere in existence. Not only that, it is also of the highest quality and has remained in excellent condition.
There is a mortar by Gobel Jan Zael in the Groninger Museum which not only bears a very similar caption on the border (Egbert Langhe ende Gheese syn vrouwe int jaer 1544), but which is also decorated on the neck with precisely the same frieze of ram’s heads and arabesques. 6.
MDXLVII +.

This very refined bell comprises a three-sided handle, a richly decorated body, and a separate, iron ringer. The words Ave Maria gratia plena, applied to the upper frieze of the body, refer to the scene of The Annunciation represented on the central register. Separated by two angels holding a bouquet of flowers is on the one side the archangel Gabriel, portrayed with a lily in his hands, and on the other side the Virgin Mary, having been startled while reading. The bottom border of the body bears the following words in gothic letters: Ic . ben . ghegoten . int . iar . MDXLVII +.

Jan II van den Eynde is known to have made several mortars1, but he is, above all, famous for his beautiful, bronze table bells. He was born in Malines in 1515, where he went on to run the foundry established by his father, Jan I. He was, however, from 1545 until his death in 1556,

Not only the composition and the strong graphic character of the representation but also the colouring and in particular the clearly recognisable facial types allow us to relate the present plaque with a Virgin and Child in Baltimore1. The latter was attributed by Philippe Verdier to the workshop of the master of the Large Foreheads and is dated to the beginning of the 16th century or thereabouts, which are without doubt equally applicable to the present plaque.

8-9. TWO PLATES: THE MONTH OF APRIL AND THE MONTH OF JUNE Master IC (active: 3rd quarter 16th century) An inscription in gold applied at the top righthand area (AVRIL) and the zodiac sign of Taurus right at the top, attest to the fact that the first plate represents The Month of April. It shows a pair of lovers, whose intimate embrace is interrupted by a fool with a fool’s cap and a scepter. The second plate depicts The Shearing of the Sheep an activity that, as does the sign of Cancer, traditionally refers to The Month of June (IVING). The monogram IC is found on the central scene of each plate. Both plates are in pristine condition. Not only the enamel but also the excessive gilding have completely retained their freshness and are absolutely immaculate. Even though I did not acquire the two plates at the same time, it is very likely that both originally belonged to the same ensemble. The two plates are after all from the same hand ; they are of the same exceptional quality ; they were inspired by the same series of prints ; they have very closely related borders and a very similar reverse ; they both have identical

While the collar of the present ewer is decorated with strapwork from which floral posies and swags of fruit and flowers are suspended, the body depicts The Reception of Psyche into Olympus. The scene begins at the right of the handle attachment, and shows Mercury seeking Psyche. In the central scene he conducts her to Mount Olympus, where Psyche, with Amor clinging to her, is introduced by Neptune to the assembled gods. The Story of Psyche and Amor was a particularly popular theme during the Renaissance and also the diverse Limoges enamellers regularly illustrated the various scenes of the story by Lucius Apuleius (c.123-c.170)1. In The Metamorphoses or The Golden Ass this Roman author describes how Venus, who was jealous of Psyche being more beautiful than her, ordered Amor to arouse Psyche’s love in a contemptible person. However, Eros fell in love with her himself, and so he hid her and visited her only after dark. When Psyche attempted to see him against his will, Amor fled and never returned. From that moment on Psyche searched for him everywhere, a quest that was thwarted by Venus time and time again. Jupiter reconciled the two, after which Psyche was made an

Pierre Courteys, to whom the present ewer must be attributed, is known to have been inspired on several occasions by prints by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau. That is true, for instance, of a ewer depicting The Triumph of Venus and Neptune in Baltimore3 and of another example with a Bacchus scene, which I sold to the Musée municipal de l’Evêché -the current Musée des Beaux Arts-, in Limoges in 20054.

The inscription SANSON LE FOR serves to identify the figure portrayed in the present large oval medallion as the biblical Samson, a man of great physical strength. He is shown in left profile and is wearing a Roman toga held together by a clasp on his left shoulder.
In 2004 Fabienne Audebrand published an essay in which she attributed to the above artist forty painted enamels2, an oeuvre which since then has been extended by another ten plates3.
1 One plate portrays on the obverse The Birth of Hercules (Antwerp, Bernard Descheemaeker - Works of Art ; see: B. Descheemaeker, ‘At Table !’. Eight Enamel Plates from Limoges (1550-1600), Antwerp, 2010, no.1), while its pendant piece depicts Hercules and Cerberus. (S. Netzer, Maleremails
Finally, I would like to mention the existence of a diamond-shaped plaque in the Musée des Beaux Arts in Limoges, likewise bearing a representation of Samson in left profile4. While that plaque must be attributed to Léonard Limosin, it also bears an identifying inscription: . IE . SUIS SANSON.
While it is certain that this medallion originally belonged to a larger series, I am unaware of a single comparable profile portrait by the same hand. The easily recognizable graphic style and the high quality admit attribution of this plaque to Jean Miette. Jean Miette is one of the lesser known enamellers from Limoges who were active in the 3th quarter of the 16th century. The fact that he was trained in the circle of Léonard Limosin, maybe even in the latter’s workshop, is evidenced not only by his style, but also by several of the sparse, archival records in which his name is mentioned.

12. OVALE PLAKET: DE MAAND NOVEMBER I OVAL PLAQUE: THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER Pierre Reymond (1513-na 1584) I Pierre Reymond (1513-after 1584) Deze grote ovalen plaket is onderaan PR gemonogrammeerd.
This large oval plaque is monogrammed PR at the bottom. It represents Harvesting Acorns for Feeding the Hogs, a theme that symbolizes The Month of November. The composition is derived from an unknown model that was predominately based on an oval print by Bernard Salomon -published in 1568 (ill.12a)- but one that also includes on the right the sleeping shepherdess from an earlier print by Bernard Salomon (1561) (ill.12b). While numerous plates were modeled on the series of prints published in 1568, there are hardly any surviving plaques that were based on these models. However, those engravings did serve as basis for a complete series of small medallions in The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and also a series from the former collections of J.P. Morgan and Rütschi. While the attributions of both series is still very uncertain, I know of seven other polychrome plaques with representations of the Months that were executed by (the workshop of) Pierre Reymond in addition to the November plaque illustrated here. Four plaques are in The Wernher Collection (February, June, July and October)1, two in the Victoria and Albert Museum (March and Au-
in The Taft Museum in Cincinatti (Mei)3.
gust)2 and the last one is in The Taft Museum in Cincinatti (May)3. Seeing that all eight oval plaques are of almost identical dimensions, all depict different months, all are monogrammed PR, all are of the same quality and all are very closely related in stylistic terms, it is highly likely that this ensemble was once part of one and the same series. But that is not all. The October plaque in London mentioned above combines elements which are derived from both Delaune prints, as does our November plaque. The principal scene is an accurate adaptation of the 1568 print, but the figure with the walking stick in the back, like our sleeping shepherdess, is a motif that was copied from the October print published in the series of 1561. For that reason I am convinced that at least the four Wernher plaques belonged to the same series as the present medallion, and that this ensemble is based on a hitherto unknown model which is heavily indebted to the Delaune series of 1568, but which also contains subsidiary elements derived from the earlier series of prints by Delaune (1561). Allow me, finally, to mention two other medallions by Pierre Reymond which in view of the somewhat larger dimensions and the presence of a vig-
nette with inscription must have belonged to a different series: a January plaque, once again in the Victoria and Albert Museum4 and a July plaque from the former Max Falk collection5.

Herkomst: verz.
04.07.1991, Londen, Sotheby’s, lot 355.
The present miniature plaque -hardly bigger than a postage stamp- depicts Minerva as a warrior in battle dress, with a breastplate and helmet. While she is holding a banner in her left hand, her right hand is supporting a shield with a representation of the serpent-haired head of Medusa. Also, in her capacity as the goddess of war, unlike Mars, she represents the fight for just causes combined with the use of reason and strategic insight. She is after all also the goddess of learning and wisdom, as symbolized here by the owl and the books lying at her feet. The present composition is influenced by a print by Etienne Delaune from 15691.
In view of the small dimensions and oval shape it is highly likely that this little jewel was originally intended for a luxury pocket watch. There are after all several contemporary watch-cases known to be extant, that are decorated with painted enamel plaques of similar dimensions executed by Suzanne de Court (or by some of her contemporaries)2.

Besides being extremely well preserved, the quality of this plaque is simply amazing. Every single detail is shown with greatest possible refinement and precision ; the mastery of the technique of translucent enamel has reached perfection ; and also the gilding is profuse and well refined. It should, therefore, come as no surprise that Suzanne de Court has signed this miniature plaque with her monogram (SC).

The present scene depicts the dramatic climax of the love that Venus felt for Adonis. In spite of her repeated advances, Adonis rejects Venus time and again, preferring to devote himself to hunting wild boar. When he becomes mortally wounded, Venus drives to him in her chariot that is drawn by a pair of swans. She arrives only to find his lifeless body on the ground and screams aloud, mad with grief, her hands raised towards heaven.
The size of the plaque indicates, as does the oval shape, that the present plaque was indeed intended for the back of a mirror and not to decorate the case of a small pocket watch.

This theme, which was popular toward the end of the 16th century, is best illustrated by the publication in 1593 of a poem by William Shakespeare entitled Venus and Adonis, which is by the way his first ever narrative poem.

15. PAAR PLAKETTEN: CHRISTUS EN MARIA I PAIR OF PLAQUES: CHRIST AND THE VIRGIN Jacques II Laudin (1663/4-1729) I Jacques II Laudin (1663/4-1729) Terwijl de ene plaket Christus als Salvator Mundi voorstelt, is op zijn pendant Maria in Aanbidding afgebeeld.

of his sons, Jacques I (c.1627-1695), and Nicolas I (1628-1698). It is interesting to remark that Jacques II (1663/64-1729), a son of Nicolas I, probably traded in enamels as well, as he is mentioned in archival records as a marchand émailleur.

The style and the use of raised scrolls lead to a dating of towards the end of the 17th century. While a very similar Mary plaque in Nantes has been related to the Poilevé family1, I believe that, on the basis of the very high quality and the characteristic use of shadows on the faces, it is possible to attribute both plaques illustrated here to Jacques II Laudin. The Laudin family-workshop was without doubt the most active and the best-known Limoges workshop in the second half of the 17th and early 18th centuries. It was established by Noël I Laudin, by whom not one single work has survived, and continued under the direction

This painting which portrays Two Elders is a fragment from a much larger composition the right side of which is missing; the canvas, however, has not been trimmed in height. Although we can only hazard a guess at the precise theme of the original scene, there can be no doubt that in the present case it must concern a historical subject of a mythological or religious, possibly Old Testament, nature. The present, hitherto unpublished fragment has been identified by Hans Vlieghe as being a later work (c.1635-1645) of Cornelis De Vos, an attribution that has in the meantime been confirmed by Katlijne Van der Stighelen. It is, in particular, the characteristic faces and the special treatment of the hands that point to the work of the Antwerp painter. While Cornelis De Vos is, of course, for the most part known as one of the most important 17th-century portrait painters in the Southern Netherlands1, he has, on the other hand, also realized a quite substantial oeuvre of predominately large-scale history pieces. The above is evidenced by a fairly recent study which em-

The personification of Victory, she is dressed in a harness and helmet, holds a sword in the right hand and a palm branch in the left, and is, most significantly, standing with one foot on a trophy. She is crowned by Pax, the goddess of Peace, identifiable by Mercury’s caduceus, and by Fame blowing the trumpet. The carriage is drawn by four figures, two men and two women, whereby the personification in white, holding a mirror aloft, is the only one that can be identified as Wisdom.

Seeing that the Viennese painting was already mentioned in the 1659 inventory listing the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, governor in the Southern Netherlands, he is very likely to have commissioned this political allegory. For, while Theodoor van Thulden was not longer active in Antwerp at that time, having returned to ’s-Hertogenbosch, the city where he was born, it would appear from several of his paintings -often of a likewise politico-allegorical nature- that he still maintained close relations with the SouThe present, hitherto unpublished drawing that thern Netherlands in general and the Archduke belonged to a French private collection exhibits in particular. all the technical and stylistic characteristics of the signed oeuvre of Theodoor van Thulden.
