Insightful reviews ?x ?p ? ½ ? : Selama ini saya mengenal si Pinokio cuma dari kartunnya Disney atau film layar lebarnya (kalo ga salah banyak versi, saya baru nonton yang versi tahun 2002 dan tahun 1993, belum versi kartunnya yang banyak). Semua orang begitu mengenal tokoh ini sehingga saat mau membaca edisi aslinya (lebih tepatnya, edisi lengkap cerita asli Pinokio)sempat terlintas di pikiran, apalagi yang diharapkan dari cerita si Pinokio? Pengalaman adalah guru paling berharga, kata orang. Belajar dari pengalaman membaca buku Peter Pan-nya J.M. Barrie dimana sebelumnya saya mengacuhkan buku ini (siapa sih yang tak kenal cerita Si Peter dan Negri Neverland-nya?), tapi begitu dicoba membacanya... wakk... langsung ketagihan. Sampai dibaca nonstop alias sambil begadang. Alhasil pas besoknya ada ulangan Biologi (baca edisi lengkang Peter Pan pertama kali pas kelas 2 SMA, sejak itu sering dibaca ulang)... huhu... Benar2 terasa banget keren dan serunya! padahal tuh klasik dan jadul. Sensasi yang sama seperti itulah yang saya rasakan saat membaca cerita Pinokio ini :) Seperti halnya cerita asli Peter Pan, jelas ada perbedaan mencolok antara cerita asli dengan cerita saduran kartun/film. Terasa banget bedanya. Bahkan saya jadi bingung, sebenarnya versi Disney itu ilham ceritanya darimana seh? coz, menyimpang jauh dari versi aslinya. Misalnya, jika menurut versi Disney Pinokio hidup setelah disihir Peri Biru, maka di cerita aslinya diceritakan bahwa si Pinokio sudah bisa berbicara pada saat dia masih berupa sebongkah kayu! Terus, ikon dari Pinokio yang bertambah panjang hidungnya saat dia berbohong, pada cerita aslinya bahkan diceritakan hidung Pinokio sudah mulai bertambah panjang saat dia mulai dipahat menjadi boneka oleh Geppeto. Tau kah Anda mengapa boneka kayu ini dinamai Pinokio? Jelas di versi kartun tidak akan dibahas, tapi di edisi asli diceritakan asal mula penamaan Pinokio yang mau tak mau bakal bikin nyengir :) Memang sih cerita petualangan Pinokio di edisi aslinya lebih kompleks, lebih banyak, dan lebih seru! dan tentu saja, lebih nakal! Bahkan kenakalannya sudah dimulai saat dia masih berupa sepotong kayu! Jail banget deh pokoknya, sampai-sampai Geppeto harus berkelahi dengan Antonio si Tukang Kayu (dikenal jg sebagai Mastro Cherry karena hidungnya merah, karena ulah 'kayu') gara-gara ulah sepotong kayu jelek sisa bahan meja yang kelak menjadi dasar pembuatan Pinokio. Bahkan diceritakan kalau saat Geppeto memahat Pinokio, dia sudah jail. Begitu Geppeto memehat bentuk kaki, kaki tersebut sudah menendang-nendang Geppeto. Saat boneka baru saja selesai? Hehe.. dah lari kesana kemari
Banyak bagian cerita dalam buku ini begitu konyol bahkan terkesan absurd. Yah, mungkin kalau di zaman sekarang, termasuk genre fantasi. Misalnya, saat si Pinokio kelaparan, dia memecahkan telur untuk dibuat omlet. Namun, saat telur dipecahkan, yang keluar malah anak ayam yang langsung terbang! Jelas, bagi pihak pembuat film bagian ini harus 'dibuang'atau 'diganti' dengan adegan lain. Padahal sesaat sebelum si ayam terbang, dia menasehati Pinokio dengan kata-kata bijak yang menyentuh. Alhasil cerita Pinokio versi asli dan versi film berbeda jauh. Padahal keabsurdan tersebut menjejali seluruh isi buku! Mungkin keabsurdan cerita ini menjadikan Carlo Collodi, sang pengarang, bebas menentukan alegori novel ini. Lagi pula, justru karena itulah novel ini memikat. Sosok Pinokio bahkan terkesan liar namun tetap baik hati. Sosoknya yang riang, kocak namun gampang terpengaruh membuat kita tertawa melihat kenakalannya namun di saat lain mengajak kita merenung. Keluwesan pengarang dalam menyelipkan pesan moral dan kebenaran universal akan membuat kita jatuh hati pada sosok si boneka kayu. Melalui kenakalan Pinokio, kita diajak berinstopeksi melihat kelemahan-kelemahan diri. Begitulah kehebatan cerita Pinokio, tak heran jika cerita ini menjadi cerita abadi yang layak dibaca oleh semua orang lintas usia, lintas bahasa, lintas budaya, dan lintas waktu (lintas alam kayaknya tidak termasuk coz hanya anak Pramuka atau Jin yang melakukannya, apaan seh?). Tak heran jika cerita ini dijadikan sebagai cerita ideal bagi dongeng sebelum tidur. Cerita anak yang akan abadi dan terus memikat orang lintas generasi. Sebuah kanon sastra anak yang setara dengan Alice in the Wonderland, Peter Pan, Brothers Grimm, Winnie the Pooh, dsb PS : Novel anak-anak modern, meski lebih 'mewah', tampakanya tidak akan bisa dijadikan dongeng sebelum tidur. Mungkin jarang ada orang tua yang mau memabacakan dongeng Harpot pada anaknya (alasan utamanya sih sepertinya karena alasan teknis. maklum, novel Harpot terkenal tebalnya. As disobedient and gullible as he was, Pinocchio agreed and they set off on their journey. Eventually, Pinocchio realized that they were up to no good and had abandoned him. But it was too late, Pinocchio had already met the assassins that wanted to steal his money. You can guess who these assassins were. After being hung on a tree by these assassins he was rescued by a ghost of a blue-haired child whom he called the “Blue-Fairy.” The Fairy cared for him and treated him as her own brother. But of course, one day when he left the house
alone, he again ran into trouble. He was arrested for hurting a school-mate, (but he was framed), he went to a far-away land called Playland, he turned into a donkey, he came into the circus- where he caught a glimpse of his long-lost fairy, and he was sold to a man who wanted to drown him to make a drum out of his skin. But as he was being drowned, he turned back into a puppet and swam away. He saw his fairy, as a blue haired goat. He swam as fast as he could, but didn’t make it. A mile-long shark swallowed him, where he was reunited with his fatherGeppetto. Together they escaped from the shark and went to the Fairy’s house, to find her gone. But he had found the good in him, he tried to donate his money to the fairy, and he was kind, smart, and well-being. Alas, he turned into a real boy. This book is not just your typical, “A puppet nose grows long because he lies.” It is full of adventures, thrill, action, and some creepy or even scary scenes. Pinocchio is a disobedient puppet that is so gullible that nasty old people always trick him. He loses everything, goes back to his family, promises to be good, leaves the house, and then starts his whole routine over again. It is like a routine for every day, like wake-up, brush your teeth, get dresses eat breakfast. But on the inside he is a caring loving puppet that tries his hardest at everything, although he can just never say no. This book takes place in many places; Pinocchio’s hometown, (France), the ocean, the ocean, and the woods. In all of these places, Pinocchio is going through all of his adventures to become a real boy. This book is a medium-to a hard read. It was written a very long time ago, therefore, has some different words from the text-tile we use today. At some points it is hard to understand, but if you keep reading and think about it, it all comes together. One thing I liked about this book was how the narrator sometimes said you, and i. as if he was stating what he thinks, or what he thinks the reader would think. But, I think instead of using it only three or four times, he could have used this technique throughout the book. I think this book is a classic because as your reading it, you can tell it is from a long time ago. Whenever your thinking about childhood stories that keep coming up, one is always Pinocchio. It is one of those stories that gives you dreams at night and that you will remember your whole life. Overall, I would recommend this book to readers who don’t like too scary things, but aren’t afraid to be creeped out. They should like to be in suspense and like to have and action-packed story. And I have one pointer, do not read this at night! It will give you nightmares. All in all, Pinocchio was a great book.

Okay to start with I would say forget what all Disney taught you instead read this, I really liked this version better. It has more deeper meaning to it!
"There was once upon a time..... 'A king!' my little readers will shout together. No, children, you make a mistake. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood." This is how the book begins!
This book is really good and for me a bit strange. But I guess this book is one that everyone should read, as said good for both adults and children. Also if you even don't like this book for certain reason, your curiosity to know what actually happens will make you read it, believe it! This book tells you to make something out of your life instead of not doing anything. "Bear it in mind, Simpleton! Boys who refuse to study, and turn their backs upon books, schools, and masters, to pass their time in play and amusements, sooner or later come to a bad end...I know it by experience...and I can tell you. A day will come when you'll weep as I'm weeping now...but then it will be too late!" Pinocchio is basically an asshole, he is selfish, cruel, bratty, he lies, he cheats and he steals. Also he is trying to figure out how the world works, he is a free spirit and attached to no moral system, and through out the book trying to become a good boy.
"But I am not like other boys! I always tell the truth." Well he is certainly not! His heart is good, but he make terrible decisions constantly. This book is unsurprisingly dark and is an honest view of children and their troubles. As most of the children books have life lessons, so does this book have it.
Also I asked my 8 year old brother to read this book and after reading first 6 chapters, he told me, this guy killed the cricket by throwing a mallet at him. He is so cruel. 'Blockhead!' No idea what lesson he is going to learn after reading this book, but certainly he is going to add
few new words in his vocabulary by the time he will reach the end of the book, I guess. While I'll say the ending is great and this book is definitely fun to read. And yes the nose growing thing is certainly not a huge part of the story and also there were few characters that were introduced in the story and they just disappeared and that was weird, I mean it doesn't make sense to me :/ Now if I talk about recommendation then I recommend this book to everyone, both adults and children. And parents who are going to read this book to their children, I suggest you to read this book before you read it to them, or you all can just enjoy it together, no worries. Just saying :D
