status
status
Clothes, utensils and jewellery reflect their owner. Material, motifs and decoration are an indication of status: ruler or subject, man or woman, married or eligible.
A change in status, as from child to adult, is a major event. These transformations are accompanied by rituals in which specific items reflect aspects of the person’s new position. That of a ruler is obvious: the finest chairs, richly decorated sceptres and an imposing headdress. In the old African kingdoms the monarch’s apparel emphasised his almost divine status.
Koning Otumfo Osei Tutu II ontvangt gasten
Courtly art, with sumptuous materials and exclusive motifs, accentuates the position of rulers and courtiers. As the colourful clothes and gold jewellery of the ancient Ashanti kingdom, in today’s Ghana, illustrate. Colonisation and independence deprived the Ashanti monarch of much of his temporal power, which devolved to new political leaders. Traditional displays survive in ceremonies and objects.

Gold trade The rise of the Ashanti kingdom is linked to the discovery of rich veins of gold in the region, today’s Ghana. Using gold dust as a means of exchange, the Ashanti built up an extensive 1 network of trade. Merchants weighed the gold dust with elaborate weights on scales. Het koninkrijk van de Kuba
The Kingdom of the Kuba
The Kuba kingdom lies in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It probably dates back as far as the sixteenth century. The first Westerner to visit Kuba arrived around 1892. He was amazed by the exquisite court art.
Kings and courtiers wore wraparound skirts made of raffia. These were embroidered with a diversity of geometrical patterns. Ceremonial weapons and decorations of beads and cowrie shells contributed to their impressive appearance. Even everyday utensils were embellished with characteristic motifs. Soon after these first contacts the Kuba kingdom was colonised. Despite fierce resistance the king was forced to accept Belgian rule in 1904. He was allowed to retain his traditional rights and duties. As a result, the traditional court culture survived. These days, the elaborate costumes are only worn for ceremonial occasions. Kuba art became popular outside of Africa as collector’s items. Now the Kuba make traditional objects mainly for sale.

Initiatie
Initiation
Becoming an adult is the main transformation of status in Africa. Children are kept separate, sometimes for long periods, and initiated in isolated groups into the secrets of adulthood. Then follows a festive readmission into the community. As adults they have more rights and new responsibilities.
Among the Nkanu, in the south of the Democratic Republic of Congo, boys were initiated in groups. Woodcarvers made masks and panels showing ironic references to the spirit world or sexual practices. This colourful panel probably depicts an European missionary as a seducer of women. Among the Bemba in northern Zambia girls undergo initiation alone. At the time of their first menstruation an older woman explains the different aspects of womanhood. She illustrates her lessons with clay figures that symbolise correct and incorrect conduct.

Hout, kleurstof. Nkanu (volk), Zuidwest-Dem. Rep. Congo. 1ste helft 20ste eeuw.

Panel from an initiation hut The mask on the right of the panel depicts Kisokolo, the seducer of women. In the photo Kisokolo appears as a separate figure in front of the initiation hut. The guinea fowl symbolises the contravention of ancestral laws. The white man, a missionary, is connected to both. The triangles represent contact between men and women. The lobes and circles in the horizontal band refer to sexual maturity. Wood, dye. Nkanu (people), Southwest Dem. Rep. Congo. 1st half 20th century. 3118-2: aankoop / purchase: J. Mestach, 1962.

Klei, verf. Bemba (volk), Noord-Zambia. 1999.

Figures offering wise lessons One bird is a companion, the other a girl that follows her. The woman cares for the child, but should not forget her husband. The man with the cloth appears self-centred: he is reading the paper and not listening. If the wife doesn’t watch out the dog will steal the food. The tortoise symbolises the saying: ‘Stick your neck out for others, but keep your own problems to yourself ’. Red, white and black represent fertility, life and death. Clay, paint. Bemba (people), North Zambia. 1999. ib-2005-14-01: bruikleen / loan: dr. Thera Rasing.
Stoelen, staven en hoeden
Thrones, sceptres and hats
After the British captured the Ashanti king, they demanded his Golden Stool in 1900. The Ashanti immediately rose in revolt. The Golden Stool represented the soul of the Ashanti kingdom.

Not every throne in Africa has the same importance, but often the symbolism is profound and its use strictly personal. The decoration is full of significance. A human figure supports the seat of a prominent person, a leopard conveys authority and power. Chairs were traditionally carved from a single block of wood. A new type, inspired by European examples, emerged centuries ago combining separate elements. The European construction further augmented the owner’s status. Leaders emphasise their position with staffs, sceptres and decorative weapons as well. The delicate finish and incised ornamentation reflect the prominent status of the bearer and his function. Many people wear hats. They may identify the wearer as a hunter, a married woman or a football fan.
