Paris has the Eiffel Tower. New York has the Brooklyn Bridge. The Statue of Liberty. The Empire State Building. Beijing has the Great Wall. Cusco has the Machu Picchu. Agra has the Taj Mahal. San Francisco has the Golden Gate. And Willemstad… Well, Willemstad has the Swinging Old Lady, Queen Emma! Not quite a boat. Not quite a bridge. Her 168 meters and 16 pontoons floating over our Saint Anna Bay have inspired thousands and thousands of Google images, 50K+ YouTube videos. Her dreamy opening and closing, connects our picturesque-if-psychedelic Punda and Otrobanda for as many as 15,000 woozy pedestrians every day. Presumably the only permanent wooden pontoon bridge in the world, Queen Emma’s welcoming swings grant international cruise and container ships, sophisticated oil tankers, as well as sail boats and wooden boats permission to enter our awesome natural harbor several times a day.

10 things everyone should know about our Swinging Old Lady: 1. She was originally built by American entrepreneur and US Consul, Leonard B. Smith (#831), in 1888. Smith had the pontoons built in Camden, Maine and transported to Curaçao by sail boat. The movable section was built in two parts on the Motet wharf in Saint Anna Bay. 2. Smith considered naming her “Alliance” (because she connects our two parts of Willemstad with each other), but Governor Van den Brandhof proposed to name the bridge advertentie after Her Majesty Queen Emma of The Netherlands. (Rumor has it Smith obliged, particularly because his daughter was also named Emma) 3. She was inaugurated on May 8, 1888 and immediately doubled foot traffic between Punda and Otrobanda from 4,000 to 8,000 a day (as much as 20% of the population) 4. Though not immediately visible, a small operator sits in a cabin and controls two diesel engines that turn propellers mounted perpendicular to her length, allowing her to swing parallel to shore several times a day. The process only takes a few minutes to complete. 5. If you were wearing shoes between 1901 and 1934, you had to pay 2 NAf. cents to cross her. Savvy shoe-d pedestrians would take off their shoes to dodge the toll, whereas proud poor pedestrians (who didn’t necessarily wear shoes on a

daily basis) saved their shoes for crossing (a special occasion) and proudly paid their 2 cents… 6. A free ponchi (small ferry) connects Punda and Otrobanda when she’s open. 7. Motorized traffic was allowed to cross her until 1974; after they had to cross Saint Anna’s crowning glory, Queen Juliana (#878) to reach the other side of town. 8. She has been renovated frequently throughout the years (1939, 1961, 1983-1986). Switching from wood to asphalt then back to wood. Her original wooden pontoons were replaced by more modern metal pontoons in 1983 – 1986 to accommodate growing foot traffic. 9. Cafes along our Handelskade (Iguana Cafe) and restaurants on the Otrobanda waterfront (Gouverneur, La Bahia) use her as ‘live entertainment’ throughout the day, and especially at night when she’s all sparkling nights. An evening of soul with Funky Divas

WILLEMSTAD — The Funky Divas, consisting of the trio Berget Lewis, Edsilia Rombley and Glennis Grace, last Saturday gave a concert at the Avila’s Octagon Plaza. They performed several major hits of Beyonce, Whitney Houston and Tina Turner. In addition to solo performances, there were also funky medleys of the Divas, who were accompanied by the fixed band of Berget Lewis. The concert was humorously presented by Jörgen Raymann. His alter ego, tante [aunt] Es, could also be seen and heard between performances. The event was organized by HTF Productions [founded by Jörgen Raymann] and the Avila Hotel. Both parties once again look back on a very fruitful time of cooperation and look forward to the next project in August around the Curaçao North Sea Jazz Festival.

Scouting Antiano is completely prepared for the Caribbean Jamboree during the week of July 21st to 28 th, which has as its theme ‘Life: Tracking Treasures’. The campsite at Ronde Klip, where at least 700 scouts will live as a large family for a week, is almost finished as well. During the Jamboree week, the participants, aged twelve to eighteen and proceeding from Curaçao, Aruba, St. Maarten, Jamaica, Trinidad &Tobago, Barbados, Guadeloupe and the United States, will explore various ‘treasures’ on the island. WILLEMSTAD — The first class of students from the higher vocational training course for Special Educational Needs [SEN] at the University of Curaçao [UoC] recently graduated. They received their degrees. The ‘professional master’ SEN is a two-year part-time training course, intended for competent teachers. After following

this master training course, teachers, among other things, are better able to solve complex behavioral and learning problems in educational situations, and they can give a strong boost to education innovations. s most people would say business and pleasure should never be mixed together, but it is never impossible for two people to develop something more than friendship in the workplace most especially if you see each other everyday and you spend more or less at least eight hours in the office. It is not impossible to develop strong feelings of attraction for we are but humans and we long for love and meaning in our lives. Before you find yourself entangled in an office romance, it is important for you to think things through and consider what other officemates might say and most especially what management has to say. Many companies, years ago have a policy against these office romance relationships but now society has been more open to this and it isn’t considered taboo anymore although there are certain minor restrictions. Even if management is more lenient when it comes to their employees dating officemates, you cannot avoid pesky and nosy co-workers who spread nasty comments through the grapevine. Before giving in to your urges, try to get to know the person better and don’t just jump into the water. Friendship as they is always the best foundation for any romantic relationship. Get to discover a lot about the person beyond the office by going out after office hours which would be a good avenue for beyond work conversations. If you develop a relationship, it is highly important that you be discreet and behave accordingly in the workplace. Proper decorum is expected of everyone in the office so please avoid public display of affection. Such a behavior will merely make you and your partner the topic of every conversation at lunch and coffee breaks if you display unacceptable behavior. Having your special someone in the same office can help dispel the stress that may come with your work but it is essential that you conduct your office dealings in a very professional manner and not in a conduct that is unbecoming of an employee. Journalist, activist detained by US Border Patrol

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Prominent immigration activist and Pulitzer Prizewinning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas, who has lived and worked in the U.S. without legal documentation for years, was detained by U.S. Border Patrol agents on Tuesday at a South Texas airport.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Department of Veterans Affairs says it has made “tremendous progress” in reducing a disability claims backlog that reached above 600,000 early last year. Members of Congress and the department’s assistant inspector general don’t believe it.

Border Patrol spokesman Omar Zamora said Vargas was in custody after being stopped going through security at the airport in McAllen, a city only a few miles from the Mexico border. This combination of possibilities for an education with fun, passion and flavor are what makes me so proud to have been born and raised on this privileged island,” says Jerson Martina [29] proudly. After having a wonderful childhood on Curaçao, Jerson did what many other Curaçaoans do: he went to the Netherlands to study. Being someone who always wanted to study something technical with the purpose of helping others, Jerson studied and obtained his Master’s degree in Biomedical Technology and was promoted into the Medical Science Department of Thorax Surgery at the Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht. “The combination of successful enterprise and helping people is my ultimate goal in life,” he says. Jerson loves what he is doing now. He is a clinical specialist at Heartware Inc., a company that specializes in creating revolutionary technology for the treatment of heart failure, allowing patients to get their lives back. “The fact that, as surgeons, cardiologists, etc., we as a team can help a patient, is a fulfillment,” he says with a smile. During his studies, Jerson started to get interested in doing something with artificial organs. During a visit to the Texas Heart Institute in Houston Jerson got acquainted with artificial hearts [support hearts], back when there was not a lot of research on this topic, and became

Jerson did an investigation on artificial hearts and developed a strategy which allows doctors to get insight into the condition of the heart and which they can use in their decision-making. Jerson is also the representative of the company; all the hospitals that use support hearts in the Benelux are under his care. Jerson also gives support and training in Oslo, Spain, Lebanon, Turkey, Germany, France, Slovenia, Austria and Bratislava. During his research period Jerson wrote about 10 articles. He was named the most prestigious young researcher of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps [ISRBP], is part of the band Ola Caribense and won this year’s OCAN award, the Science Pearl. Jerson gets his motivation from his parents and sister. Their guidance and support are important to him. He is a dynamic, open and positive person and loves to dance, involved in sports and to eat tutu [cornmeal and bean polenta] with bakkeljauw [salted cod]. Getting his promotion was a fulfillment, because this was a way to show his family that he was doing well. Graduating was something he did for them, to give them a gift in return for raising and educating him. “It gives me great satisfaction as a Yu di Kòrsou to give a contribution on this level. We are all equally unique and can achieve all our goals if we go for them,” he says with contentment. There is no better exercise for the heart than helping people, and to be the ultimate support is Jerson Martina’s purpose in life.

´Voetbalwedstrijd oorzaak van schietpartij´ WILLEMSTAD (ANP) — Een uit de hand gelopen ruzie om de voetbalwedstrijd Nederland-Argentinië was de reden voor een schietpartij op 9 juli op Curaçao, waarbij een 21-jarige militair ernstig gewond raakte. Een 20-jarige militair is hiervoor aangehouden. Dat heeft een woordvoerder van het Openbaar Ministerie (OM) op Curaçao dinsdag bevestigd. De twee hielden samen na afloop van de wedstrijd de wacht op een marinekazerne. De 21-jarige man werd daar tijdens een ruzie in de nek geschoten. Zijn situatie is zeer ernstig, maar stabiel, aldus het OM. Zijn familie liet eerder weten dat hij kunstmatig in slaap wordt gehouden. De 20-jarige man zal poging tot doodslag ten laste worden gelegd. Omdat de twee mili-

ciens onder de Nederlandse krijgsmacht vallen, doet de Koninklijke Marechaussee onderzoek. De verdachte moet woensdag voor de Nederlandse rechter verschijnen. Bij de kazerne is mogelijk meer mis. Zo maakte de marechaussee vorige maand bekend onderzoek te doen naar mishandeling, bedreiging en aanranding door instructeurs van Suffisant.

‘Meer aandacht voor gevolgen overstromingen’

Geen gezondheidsrisico na brand Shell Moerdijk STRIJEN (ANP) — Vlak na de brand begin juni bij Shell Moerdijk, zijn in Strijen verhoogde concentraties (zware) metalen gevonden. Dat meldt het Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (RIVM), dat metingen heeft uitgevoerd na de brand. De concentraties zijn, vanwege de korte blootstellingsduur, niet schadelijk voor de volksgezondheid, verzekert het RIVM. Het gaat om de metalen koper, chroom en barium. Kort na de brand werd al bekendgemaakt dat in roetdeeltjes in delen van de Hoeksche Waard zware metalen waren gevonden, waaronder chroom,

Politie tast nog in duister over liquidatie AMSTERDAM (ANP) — De 30-jarige man die in de nacht van zaterdag op zondag in Amsterdam is doodgeschoten, is Stefan Manuel Regalo Eggermont. De politie heeft een foto van de man op de website www.politie.nl gezet en is op zoek naar meer informatie over het slachtoffer. De Amsterdammer werd rond 01.40 uur door meerdere kogels om het leven gebracht in de Conradstraat in Oost. Mayor apologizes for profanity at July 4th concert PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The mayor of Philadelphia is apologizing for the profanity used by rapper Nicki Minaj and comedian Marlon Wayans during a family-friendly July Fourth concert.
