S t u d e nt D r i ve rs Looking back over previous articles, I found that I have written in Kontak about the issue of road safety each year for the past 3 years. Again, this problem must be addressed. There have been several reported cases of students driving cars to school who are clearly not able to hold a driving license. The school is strongly opposed to this practice and has very clear policies on this matter. Any student who is found to be driving, without school permission, is automatically suspended. There is no excuse for a student to be driving without permission as this endangers not only the child themselves but other innocent citizens. I strongly request that parents speak to their drivers and ensure that they do not allow children to drive at any time. Parents should also speak to their children about the inherent dangers of such a practice. At SGJ, with the help of our local police, we have already run safety workshops for students focusing on the dangers of driving. Random checks are also made in the car park area before and after school. But the schools attempts will be futile if parents do not take the initiative and make this a priority issue to discuss at home.

UNIFORM AND DRESS CODE It is a source of constant frustration for us that there is a significant portion of the student body which ignores our Uniform and Dress Codes. There have been many warnings, in Kontak, general letters to parents, individual letters to parents, to students in general at assemblies and to individual students from us and other teachers as we see them around the school. Despite many warnings, some students and their parents refuse to comply with our codes. Most students and parents are supporting the schools policy in this matter. In all fairness to them, it is time for us to make sure that everyone complies. As from Monday, 10th of November, any student who does not comply with the codes will be given a letter which informs parents that their child is not to return to school until all of the problems have been addressed. We refer you to the relevant codes which you will find in the Parent Handbook, pages 21 and 22 and the Student Diary, pages 9 to 11. This is the last warning to students and parents that non-compliance will not be tolerated any further. The main issues are the length of hair for the boys and, for girls, the length of their skirts and hair not being pinned back. If a students hair covers their eyebrows, this is considered to be part of the face and therefore not in accordance with our Dress Code. Girls must wear their hair clipped back AT ALL TIMES. Boys are not permitted to clip back their hair, they must have it cut so that it cannot fall across the face. If it can be combed forward and covers the eyebrows, this is not in compliance with the Codes. We are seeking your support in this matter but these policies will be enforced and students denied entry to classes until they comply. Pak Edi, Pak Kevin and Pak Chris C Secondary Principals
Skills for the 21st Century
I read an article last week about moves being made in some USA schools to equip students with 21st Century skills. When asked what these skills are, many people would name IT skills but the fact is that computer skills are only a small (albeit significant) part of the skills which students require to give them the confidence and ability they need to succeed. What then are the other skills which are being focused upon? Fifty years ago, the ticket up the economic ladder was content mastery of four or five subjects
..Today, its the ability to think critically, solve problems, communicate, collaborate, use technology and be globally competent. Sound familiar? These skills were recognized by the founders of SGJ and incorporated into the Schools Missions and Vision statements. They also form the basis of our Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs). They are also reflected in our choice of the IB programmes which emphasize these skills above pure mastery of content. We have always had confidence in our direction but it is still nice to know that we are well ahead of the game. If you wish to read the whole article you will find it at this address: http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2008/10/15/08skills.h28.html?print=1
