A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése "omnis cellula e cellula" minden élő sejt egy másik élő sejtből keletkezik (eredetileg Francois Raspail-tól (1794-1878) származó idézet, melyet később Rudolf Virchow (1821-1902) népszerűsített )
A gondolatot többen hirdették, pl. Robert Hooke, Marcello Malphigi, Nehemiah Grew
“Often and not without pleasure, I have observed the structure of the nerves to be composed of very slender vessels of an indescribable fineness, running lengthwise to form the nerve” Leeuwenhoek rajza
“Nerves (BCDEF),”composed by many “vessels” in which “the lines or strokes denote the cavities or orifices of those vessels. This Nerve is surrounded, in part, by five other Nerves (GGGGG)” in which only “external coats” are represented.
1773 -1858, Scottish botanist and palaeobotanist
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1838, Robert Remak leírta a (myelin) hüvelyt az egyedi idegrostok körül. (Remak sejtek: olyan Schwann sejtek, melyek nem myelinálnak) 1815-1865, Polish/German embryologist, physiologist, and neurologist
1839, Theodore Schwann javasolta, hogy a myelin-hüvelyt specialzált sejtek termelik (a később róla elnevezett Schwann sejtek); Ő hozta létre a „cellular theory” elméletét. "All living things are composed of cells and cell products"
1810-1882, German physiologist
1847, Matthias Jakob Schleiden a „cellular theory” megalapítója, Schwann-nal együtt. Szintén észrevette a sejtmag jelentőségét és kapcsolatát a sejtosztódással. Elsők között ismerte el Darwin evolúció-elméletét (1859). 1804-1881, German botanist
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1836, Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg valószínűleg ő figyelt meg először idegrendszeri sejtet a pióca tanulmányozása során
1795–1876, German naturalist, zoologist, comparative anatomist, geologist, and microscopist,
1837, Johann Evangelista Purkinje a kisagyat tanulmányozta és leírta a később róla elnevezett sejttípust
1787-1869, Czech anatomist and physiologist
Purkinje eredeti, első rajzai a Purkinje sejtekről, 1837.

1810-1883, German physiologist
1851, Heinrich Müller fedezte fel a radiális rostokat a retinában (később ezeket a sejteket róla nevezték el Kölliker javaslatára) 1820-1864, German anatomist
1858, Max Schultze részletesen vizsgálta a Müller sejteket
Cajal’s drawings on Müller cells
1825-1874, German microscopic anatomist
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1857, Karl Bergmann azonosította a kisagyi radiális rostokat (Bergmann-rostok), míg később Golgi leírta később ezek sejttesteit (Golgi—féle epiteliális sejtek). Mivel Golgi-féle gátló neuronok vannak a közelben, ezért a modern korban a 1814-1865 Bergmann-glia elnevezést használjuk. 1862, Wilhelm Kühne írta le a neuro-muszkuláris kapcsolatot és bevezette a “végtalp (“endplate”) kifejezést. 1837-1900, German physiologis
1860, a fiatal Otto Deiters fedezte fel a csillag alakú (stellate) sejteket a fehér és szürkeállományban - (ezek a későbbi asztrociták !) 1834–1863 German neuroanatomist Deiter’s drawing on a stellate cell

1858, Rudolf Ludwig Karl Virchow (37 évesen) a Berlini Egyetem Patológiai Intézetében előadássorozatot tartott 13. előadásában (‘Spinal cord and the brain’) említette meg az „agyi kötőszövetet” („nervenkitt, nervecement”), melyet neurogliának nevezett el 1821–1902, German doctor, anthropologist, pathologist, prehistorian, biologist and politician
Rudolf Virchow és Karl Weigert szerint – a neuroglia szerepe csak a helykitöltés a neuronok között (‘neuroglia holds nervous elements together and gives the whole its form’) A gliát Virchow így definiálta „ .. connective substance, which forms in the brain, in the spinal cord and in the higher sensory nerves as a sort of nervenkitt (neuroglia), in which the nervous system elements are embedded”. For Virchow, glia was a connective tissue devoid of cellular elements.
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1874-75, Karl Weigert Virchow-val egyetértésben állította, hogy a gliasejtek pusztán passzív elemei az idegrendszernek, s szerepük pusztán a helykitöltés.
1845-1904, German Jewish pathologist

Protoplazmás asztroglia sejtek a 1843–1926, szürkeItalian physician, pathologist, állományban. scientist, and Nobel laureate Festette és rajzolta: (Nobel prize: from 1895) Golgi; 1883.

A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése In 1893, Mihály Lenhossék vezette be az asztrocita kifejezést 1863-1937, was an Hungarian anatomist and histologist uncle to Albert Szent-Györgyi (1893-1986)
Terminológiai változtatásokat javasolt (Lenhossek, 1893): „ I would suggest that all supportive cells be named as spongiocytes, and the most common form in vertebrates be named spider cells or astrocytes, and use the term neuroglia only cum grano salis (with a garin of salt), at least until we have a clearer view... Astrocytes are the small elements, which form the supportive system of the spinal cord. They are star shaped and indeed no other comparison describes their form so clearly. While the term spider cell introduced by Jastrowitz has become popular and gives a proper impression of the cells, one should regard Gierke’s note, namely that nobody has seen a spider with so many feet as these cells have processes.”

A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1871, Louis Antoine Ranvier - Schwann sejteket ő nevezte el Schwann után, nevéhez fűződnek a Ranvier féle befűződések (“nodes of Ranvier”) 1835-1922, French physician, pathologist, anatomist and histologist
A microtome feltalálója. Bevezette a dendrit fogalmát.

A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése
(Ő vezette be a helyi érzéstelenítést !) • Felvetette, a gliasejtek állandóan változó térfogata kontrollálja a neuronális kommunikációt. Schleich rajzai a glia-neuron kapcsolatokról ebből a könyvéböl. Verkhratsky, Butt 2007
1820-1896, German anatomist
„ the finest divisions of the protoplasmic processes ultimately take part in the formation of the fine nerve fibre network which I consider to be an essential constituent of the gray matter of the spinal cord. The divisions are none other than the beginnings of this nerve fibre net. The cells of the gray matter are therefore doubly connected by means the nerve process which becomes the axis fibre and through the finest branches of the protoplasmic processes which become a part of the fine nerve fibre net of the gray matter „
‘Retikuláris’ interneuronális kapcsolatok Gerlach szerint Gerlach (1872)
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1894, Sigmund Exner terjesztette el a „neuronal doctrine” vagy „neuron theory” elméletét The neuronal doctrine regards The neuron doctrine is a descriptive term for the fundamental concept that the nervous system is made up of discrete individual cells. (The idea is based on earlier findings by Cajal, Golgi and others.)

1846–1926, Austrian physiologist
Ő adott nevet a kromoszómának. Ő alkotta meg a ‘neuron’ kifejezést (before it was called nerve cell). Waldeyer, like other members of his University, was a fierce opponen also t to the admission of women into medical studies. He used pseudoanthropological evidence to conclude that women's brains being smaller, they therefore had fewer brain cells and thus fewer intellectual capacity.
1867-1923
A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése 1921, Pio del Rio-Hortega, Cajal tanítványa volt. Bevezette az ezüst karbonátos festést, ami szelektíve jelölte az oligodendrocitákat, melyeket 1928-ban osztályozott. Ő vezette be a mikroglia fogalmát is, eredetileg “szemétgyűjtő” („garbage collecting”) sejteknek nevezve őket. 1882-1945, Spanish physician, histologist, anatomist

A ‘GLIA’ felfedezése By the 1920-ies the overall understanding of morphological organisation of the brain and the spinal cord has been generally completed, and the following developments were mostly dedicated to uncovering the functional mechanisms by which neural cells communicate and by which they may perform higher brain functions.
By then the neuronal doctrine became absolutely dominating.
1897, 1906, Charles Scott Sherrington introduced the term synapse and worked to show that the synapse is the principle place of integration in the nervous system
1857–1952, English neurophysiologist, histologist, bacteriologist, and a pathologist, Nobel laureate

The role of glia
1954, Ben Geren B. Schwann cells myelinate 1966, Steven Kuffler, John Nicolls, Richard Orkand demonstrated coupling between glial cells
1969, Milton Brightman, Tom Reese identified structures connecting glial networks (which we know now as gap junctions)
Nonetheless, for the following two decades glial cells were still regarded as passive elements of the NS, bearing mostly supportive and nutritional roles. The advent of modern physiological techniques, most notably those of the patch-clamp and fluorescent calcium dyes, has dramatically changed this image of glia as ‘silent’ brain cells.

Neuroglia Physiological aspects - glial receptors - synaptic transmission onto glia - signalling in glial syntitia - gliotransmission and exocytotic release - control of connectivity in neural networks Pathosphysiological aspects - acute lesions (taruma, stroke) - chronic neurodegenerative diseases (Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, MS, etc.) - psychiatric diseases - brain malignancies (95% are of glial character) - limiting areas of damage - neuro-immune responses (microglia !) - remodeling and recovery of neuronal function - arise of targeting glial cells : neuroglial pharmacology Verkhratsky A, Parpura V, Rodríguez JJ. 2011
