In this week’s message I want to inform you of the following: Appointment of new Assistant Elementary Principal, Results of Elementary Afterschool Sports Program Survey, Board Elections Information. Appointment of new Assistant Elementary Principal You will already be aware of the fact that our current Associate Elementary Principal, Lisa Wilson, will be leaving us at the end of the year after 10 years in AISB. Over the last few months we have been conducting the search for her successor. That search has now reached a conclusion and I am delighted to inform you that the new incumbent will be Mr. Colin Brown. Colin is a Canadian who comes to us with many years of experience in the education field and has taught or held administrative positions in Canada, China and Guatemala. Currently, he is the Elementary and Pre-Kinder Director of 590 students at a school in Guatemala City, Guatemala. Prior to this position, he has been an Assistant Principal, Special Education Coordinator, Behavior Resource Teacher, Athletics Director and Classroom teacher. Colin holds Bachelor of Arts (Psychology Major) and Master of Education specializing in Administration and Educational Leadership. He has also had published two educational articles (School Focus Time, Supporting a Child with Learning Disabilities). Colin is passionate about international education and both he and his family are really looking forward to joining the AISB community. Results of Elementary Afterschool Sports Program Survey A number of weeks ago AISB sent out a survey to elementary families regarding the After-School activities with five key questions. The number of responses to the different questions varied between 54 and 62 representing 19-22% of the Elementary families. The full responses are given below. However, I would like to draw some highlevel conclusions. There is a definite feeling from the survey that the program could be enhanced by: i. ii. iii.
increasing the variety of sports on offer; increasing the length of time devoted to each sport over the year; adding skill-based training from qualified trainers.
There is also a sense that parents are willing to pay for this additional enhancement. There is a wish to strengthen the offering to Early Years students by including PreK4 students in the program. Finally, there is a wish to bring the access to all sports and activities into the same time frame as for Middle and High School. We shall now move forward through a planning process with a view to full implementation in the fall. For this, AISB will move into discussions with relevant and targeted trainers with a view to setting up the framework. We have, however, already been able to set up an additional ballet class with our external specialist. Secondly, we shall

be able to offer swimming in the spring term taught by a qualified swimming teacher. We shall inform you of future developments as they unfold and let you know if we are able to advance any other skills-based sports as a result of our discussions. 1.
Please indicate your level of satisfaction with the current After School Activities Program, on the following dimensions: Not Satisfied

Board Elections Information All families should have received by direct parent e-mail a letter from the Board Chair, Andy Higgins, regarding the upcoming election period. Best wishes, Ray Holliday-Bersegeay Director Kedves Szülők, Az e heti üzenetben az alábbiakról szeretnék beszélni: Új Associate Elementary Principal, Elementary After School programokról készített felmérés eredményei, Iskolavezetőségi választások. Új Associate Elementary Principal Mint tudják, a jelenlegi Associate Elementary Principal, Lisa Wilson e tanév végén, 10 itt eltöltött év után elmgey tőlünk. Az elmúlt pár hónapot azzal töltöttük, hogy megtaláljuk az utúdját. A keresés sikeres eredménnyel zárult, Mrs. Wilson helyét Mr. Colin Brown fogja átvenni. Colin kanadai állampolgár, hosszú évek tapasztalatával rendelkezik a nemzetközi oktatás terén, dolgozott Kanadában, Kínában és Guatemalában. Jelenleg 590 főt számláló Elementary és Kindergarten igazgató Guatemalában. Ez előtt különböző pozíciókban dolgozott, mint például: Assistant Principal, Special Education Coordinator, Behavor Resource Teacher, Athletics Director és Classroom teacher. Colin pszichológia BA diplomával, valamint Oktatási vezetésben specializált MA diplomával rendelkezik. Oktatással foglalkozó cikkek is publikált (School Focus Time, Supporting a Child with Learning Disabilities).
Szeretnénk a programot kiterjeszteni az Early Years tanulókra a PK4 diákok bevonásával. A tavaszi félévben lehetőség lesz úszás oktatáson részt venni, melyet profi úszó edző fog tartani.

Pi day is coming to MS AISB! March 14 (3/14) is International Pi Day. AISB middle school students will be invited to celebrate Pi by participating in a variety of Pi related activities, including • memorizing digits of pi (the current world record is over 62,000 digits), • writing pi poems, • answering pi trivia questions • empirically calculating pi, • making a pi movie, • solving the AISB pi problem, • and more... Interested students will receive their own pi activity card from their math teacher by Monday, March 7th and can work on the activities during the week. You can also visit the AISB pi moodle page to download the pi activity card and find links to all sorts of pi related websites (go to AISBmoodle and look for 'pi' in the courses list, or go directly to http://92.61.101.63/moodle/course/view.php?id=632 ). All students who complete 7 of the activities by Monday March 14 will be invited to the Pi(e) Party, where we will celebrate pi by eating as much pie as we possibly can. Any parents who would like to help are welcome! We need pies - all kinds of pies. If you can donate a pie or would like to help out by slicing and serving pie at the party, please send Jake Disston (
[email protected]) an email with subject "pi party". Thanks, The Middle School Math Department
VERY SUCCESSFUL M.S. BAND FESTIVAL IN ISTANBUL On the weekend of the 9th-13th of February, 12 AISB middle school students went to Istanbul to participate in the 7th CEESA Middle School Band Festival. They joined forces with 60 students from Moscow, Prague, Warsaw, Bucharest and Istanbul. They rehearsed all together as well as in sectionals (small groups coached by the music teachers) and learned 6 difficult pieces that they performed on the Friday and Saturday afternoons. When they left Budapest, some of them thought that the music was too hard and impossible to learn; well, after much playing and coaching they learned the notes, the rhythms and mostly the proper style to play such favorites as "What a Wonderful World" and "Rondo Alla Turca" by Mozart. They got to play a Tango, a Bossa Nova and Swing from the film "Ratatouille". They also learned to narrate a story through music: the story of the elusive tiger in the Taman Negara forest. On Saturday afternoon, students visited the Blue Mosque and walked around in the small bazars in the Sultanahmet district. When we asked them what they thought of the experience: Etienne: “ I learned to play faster and higher notes.” Mark: “I learned a lot from the other trumpeters.” Christine: “I learned to go slow and fix each mistake.” We also asked if they would like to return next year: Sarah: “I would love to go next year!!!! I love playing music and traveling.” Idan: “I would because you get to meet new people and cooperate.” Aviv: “Yes because I find it an incredible great experience.” Stuart: “Yes because I learned a lot in a small amount of time.” The travelling musicians were: grade 6 Étienne, George, Nimrod, Sarah, Dániel, Idan and Jason, grade 7 Stuart, grade 8 Mark, Christine, William and Aviv. Ms. Dickson and Dr. Dallaire were the chaperones.

AISB International Festival 2011 Raffle Donations Dear AISB Families, I am writing on behalf of the Parent School Association (PSA). The PSA is organizing the International Festival, which is the one and only big fundraiser of the year. This is the time when the entire AISB community joins together to celebrate and share the cultural differences that make us who we are. This is an exciting community building and fund-raising event. The Festival is scheduled for Sunday, April 3rd from 11:00-3:00pm. The funds that we raise are for humanitarian charities, cultural arts, and enrichment programs that benefit the students of AISB. In the past, donations have been generously offered by parents’ and companies in the AISB community as well as local businesses within Hungary. We are looking for items that we can offer as prizes for our raffle or silent auction. We would appreciate any donations that you or your company can make for this event. Some of the items donated last year include a weekend getaway, dinners at some of Budapest’s finest restaurants, cell phones, DVD player, a flat screen TV, Wizz Air tickets and much more. Your donation will help us to achieve our goal for this fundraiser, and the money will be used for our various charities. Your generous donation of service/merchandise will be publicly acknowledged at our event through promotional announcements and fliers, and a prominent note in our newsletter. The International Festival is also advertised in local newspapers and other publications. Last year we had almost 2000 guests visit our school during the Festival. If you would like to make a donation, or have any questions, please contact me at:
[email protected], or by phone +36-30-651-7763. Thank you for considering our request, and we look forward to hearing from you in the near future. Sincerely, Barbara Kezsmarki-Lavoie Sponsor/Raffle Coordinator
