Spoon-billed Sandpiper in north-eastern Siberi a Pavel S Tomkovrch S ome bird species are attractive just hecause ot their unusual appearance . Spoon-hilled Sandpiper Eurynorhynchus pygmeus is one ol those species . Its plumage is very simi lar to that of Calidris sandpipers, especially Red-necked Stint C rutïco!lis, but the peculiar bill is unique among wader species . fts spatulate shape, as indicated by hoth the English and scientific names, was the reason to place it in a separate genus . The scanty knowledge of its distribution, hehaviour and breeding biology, as well as its rarity outside the breeding areas, all add to the sascination . Furthermore, the known breeding localities are all within a limited area in north-eastern Siberia lfigure 1 i . A study of the breeding biology and social organization of Spoon-billed Sandpiper was undertaken in 1986-88 on the northern coast oÍ Chukotski peninsula . Birds, individually marked with colour-
tlags, were followed over several seasons and ihey showed a high site tenacity . On average, 66°4„ oÍ the adults returned annually to the breedi ng sites of the previous year . Males almost invariably re-established their territories on the verv same spot while females more frequentlv dispersed some distance and quite often changed mate . As a consequence, an average of c 29°/, of the pairs of one year had divorced the next year (ie, of those cases where both birds of the previous pair had returnedl . Arctic breeding sandpipers are welf known for the diversity of their matin#; systems, ranging from pure monogamy to various forms of polvgamv íeg, double-clutch system, pol, vgamy in lekking spec. ies ; cf Pitelka et al 1974) . These mating systems are acsociated with many other species-specific features such as site fidelity {Oring & Lank 1984}, migration schedule IKokhanov 1 96 5 } and migratio n

distance (Myers 1981 ) . For instance, Myers 1 198t I found that more promiscuous species tend to winter further south . Agai nst this background, it was of great interest to establish the breeding system of S poon-b i l l ed Sa ndpi per, espec i a l l y s i n ce the do u bl eclutch svstem (in which the female of a pair lays two clufthes which are then each incubated by one of the parentst was suspected in the species (Kondratiev 1982 ) . However, it was found to be monogamous and both mates alternately incubate the clutch and accompany the brood after hatchinK : the female usua Ilv can be found on the nestor with the brood during the evenings and nights while the male takes over during daytime . However, one of the parents fas a rule the temalei deserts 1he brood earlier and disappears from the breeding area . The length of stay with the brood is variable but shorter among late bfeeders . Usually, the female stays with the brood only for a few days while the male accompanies the chicks until fledKing, which occurs when they are 1 7-1 8 .5 days old . Sexual dimorphism inSpoon-hilled Sandpiper is not well pronounced . Males are brighter in summer pltJmage and smaller in size on average but there is a broad overlap in all characters (table 11 . Using, both wing and bill, 32 0,l~, of the males and
57%~ of the fernales (45% of all birds) can be correctlv identified . Whydid the bil I of Spoon-billed Sandpíper evolve into its spatulate shapc>? It is generally thought that it is an adaptation to filter soft semi-liquid mucl to sieveout srnall invertebrates . Observations of 5ieving niovc>ments in various staging and wintering, areas support this idea . However, our studies at the northern limit of its range show a possible disadvantage of the spatulate hill in an arctic environment . in eariy summer, the muddy banks of small lakes and lagoons are covered by water durint ; snow melt in lune . Under these circumstances, thc birds cannot use their bills to their full advantage and are only able to peck insects from the surface of the tundra while all other waders can probe into the moss layer . During spells of unfavourable weather, when most waders feed hy probinF (the surface invertebrates heing inactive}, Spoon-billed Sandpipers probably suffer more from food shortage than other sandpiper species . The mi[;ration and wintering areas of Spoon-bil led Sandpiper are still poorly known . They mitqrate along the PaciSic coastof Asia but no largeconcentrations are known . Only inJanuary 1989, thefirstiart;ewinterint;flock of 257 birds was found hy lohn Howes in Bangla39

The bird was ringed as a ch ick in 1987, shot hy a hunteron 10 May 1990 and subsequentlv eaten . These are the first and only recoveries to date of this species . During the studies on Chukotski peninsula, it became clcaar that Spoon-bilfed Sandpiper suffers heavily from predation bv zrctic roxes Alupen lagopus and the annual mortality rate seems only just to be balancecj by reproduction . Taking into account the very specific coastal hahitats ot the species and its conservative habits, we can conclude the species to be vuinerable to man-induced changes in the landscape . The species is, therefore, includeci in the Red dat a book oi the USSR. Lony;-

Occurrence and identification of Basra Reed Warbler in Saudi Arabia Arnouci 8 van den 8erg & Peter Slvmen s 0 n 1 5 April, 1 and 4 May 1991, at Juhavl, ,Northeastern Province, Saudi Arabia, three Basr a Reed Warblers Acrocephalus griseldis were trapped and ringed in the garden of the Holiday Inn hotel along the Arabian Gulí coast . At Tanageeb, north of Jubayl, four were trapped and ringed on 57 May 1 991 . Furthermore, in May 1991, there were several sightings at Juhayl, Tanageeb and Tarut . At Tanageeli, the species was seen daily hetween 18 and 27 May, with up to four on 23 May . These constitute the first records of Basra Reed Warbler for the Northeastern Provirrce . Taxonomical status Until 1960, Basra Reed Warbler was generally regarded as a separate species . Vaurie í 19~91, Williamson (19741 and Voous 11977), however, treat it as a subspecies ot Great Reed Warbler A arundinaceus, mainly basing themselves upon simílarities in the wirig formula . Pearson & Backhurst (19881 discussed the taxonomic status of Basra Reed Warhler and argued that it should be regarded as a full species (cf, eg, Sibley &,tilonroe 1990) . They demonstrated differences in morphol-

ogy, vocalizations and behaviour between Basra and Great Reed Warblers . Much of their extensive knowledge was gathered since 1970 in the species' eastern African wintering grounds from where it was described bv Hartlaub (T891 } . It was not until 1920 lhat the restricted breeding area in the vast marshlands of Lower Iraq, from around Baghdad south to Basra, hecame known . Migration and moul t Little is known about the species' mit;ration bettil-een iraq and Africa- Basra Reed Warbler is still regarded as a rarity in the Arabian peninsula . Jenninf;s 119811 was the. first to mention the species as autumn passage migrant in Saudi Arabia, hased on ringing records from Riyadh, Central Province, during autumn 1975 . More recently, in 1987-91, Basra Reed Warblers were observed on several occasions in April and August-September in weste rn Saudi Arabia, at Ta'if and alon f ; the southern Red Sea coast between Jeddah and Jizan . Seven Basra Reed Warblers (and 17 Great Reed Warblers) were also identified in prey remnants collected durinf ; Au#;ust-September 1987-89 i n a breedingcolony of

There exist as yet no records of Basra Reed Warblertrom Bahrain (Erik Hirschfeld perscomm) . Moreover, Richardson ( 199 0 ) does not include the species for the United Arab Emirates and neither has it been recorded in Yemen LBrooks e( al 1987) . F-loliom et al {1988} do not mention Basra Reed Warblerat all and, apparently, do not recognize the species . The species' movements within Africa are better understood . Auturnn records come from the Sudan coast Ilate AuKust to mid-Octoberl and Ethiopia (September to November) . From late October to early April, it occurs from southern Somalia to Malawi and Mozambique (Pearson & Backhurst 197 6 , 19881 . The spring records in Saudi Arabia, inc luding the records of passage migrants in the Northeastern Province from 15 April to 27 May 1991, fit well into the pattern of occurrence in eastern Africa . Also, the autumn records in AugustSeptember correspond with the species' arrival dates in Sudan and Ethiopia . On 19 and 20 Septemtier 1991, PS ohserve(1 at least three passage mi-t _>
Idenlification The following notes on Basra Reed Warbler were taken from the birds trapped at Jubayl in April-May 1991 . Direct comparisons were made with Eastern Great Reed Warblers A a zarudnyi which were common and often trapped . A a zarudnyi is, on average, slightly smaller and has less rufous on the upperparts and has paler coloured underparts than Western Great Reed Warblers A a arundinaceus Milliamson 1974) . Basra Reed Warblers were di5tinctly smal ler than Great Reed Warbler . Primary projection and primary spacing did not differ much between the two species although, orr average, primary spacing was a little more irregular in Basra Reed Warbler . The tail was more square-encled than in Great Reed Warbler . The bill was relatively long and remarkablv narrow . Usually (but not always), the supercilium was longer and more whitish than in Great Reed Warbler, and especially more conspicuous above the ear-coverts . The upperparts differed in having less warm colours and heing slightly more greenish-brown, and the underpartsweredistinctly whiter than in Great Reed Warbler . Especially, the whitish flanks and white undertail-coverts were quite obviously different from the cream-coloured flanks and undertail-coverts of Great Reed Warhler . In general, the plumage colour was much like that of Eastern Reed Warbler A scirpaceus tuscus . Furthermore, Basra Reed Warbler lacked the dark streaks on the throat which were always conspic uous in A a zarudnvi. The tail was darker than in Great Reed Warbler and the legs were greyer (Great Reed Warbler often shows pale brownish leKs, especia lly in A a arundinaceus) . On average, Great Reed Warbler seemed to have a slightly more conspicuous pale pinkish area on the cutting edges and the base of the bill than Basra Reed Warbler (again, this difference might be more obvious in comparison with A a arundinaceus) . Pearson & Backhurst c1988) showed that between fresh-plumaged Reed, Great Reed and Basra Reed Warblers, there is no overlap in the length of the wing, tai i and tarsus, the width of the hil I and the weighi . Reed Warbler also differs from Basra Reed Warbler in, eg, the smaller size, the shorter bil I, the short supercilium (becoming indistinct behind the eve), and the more hrownish cnlour of the let ;s .

Mededelinge n Wagtails of Taimyr peninsul a Recently, 1 had the opportunity to make observations of the plumages of wagtails Motaci!!a occurring on the Taimyr peninsula, northern-central Siberia, Russia . The following notes are mainly based on observations in June-August 1990 (Khatanga, Logata river, mouth ot the Taimyra river, Dikson) and June-August 1991 IKhatanga, lower Bolsha'ia Balakhnia river, Preobrajenia island), complemented by disc ussions with Russian colleagues, particularly Pavel S Tomkovích . Yelfow Wahtail Breeding oi Yellow Wagtail Ni llava is limited to the southernmost part of the tundra wherc: forest tuntlra and southern shrub tundra meet isee Chernov 1985 for a characterization oi ecological subzonesl, and the pairs observed at Khatanga (72"N) could have been at the northern lirnit of thespec ies' breedinK range . StraggIers occ :asionaily reach higher latitudes such as Dikson (7 3 :4t1 N) on the wes t coast t18 and 27 June 1982 ; Tomkovich & Vronski 1988), and the lower Bolsha ïa Balakhnia river (73 :36 N) ( late June 1991)

Their head pattern was very variable with the black hinclneck sometimes extending to the crown up to eve-level in some individuals, and a hlack crown separated from the hindneck bv a thin yellow band in one hird . Some had a few small hrownish or dark olive feathers on the ear-coverts, giving a mottied effect . From all other pluniage characters and structure, these birds were obviously pure Citrine Wagtails and not Cítríne x YeHow Waxtail hvhrids . Pavel S Tomkovic:h (pers comm( confirmed that the species' head pattern is far more v,iriable than depicted in the western literature . Kees Roselaar (in litt) commented that the presence of a white lower belly seems very exceptional and interesting ; the descriherl variable head patterns are not uncommon and also found in more westerly populations, especialiv in second-calendar year hirds but also in some adults . White b4'a g tail Taking advantage of human settlements, White 1h'agtail M alba breeds further north than the two former species . It reaches the Dikson area in the west (Tomkovich & Vronski 1988), Malaja Logala (73 :24 N') in central Taimyr, and the lower Bolshaïa Balakhnia river on the eas t
coast . Two birds have been observed on th e lower Taimyra river {76 :06 Ni in early August 1990 but breeding was not suspected there and these observations prohably refer to post-breedinK dispersa[ . Taimyr is an intert;radatron zone between the
subspecies M a rlukhcrrrensis and ti7 a ocularis . All breeders had broad white tips to the niedian and greater upperwing-coverts, a character showed by both subspecies, and the black eye-stripe typical of Ma ocularis . Mantle colour i s highly variable, rangi ng trom very pale grey (paler than M a alba) to very dark #;rey (recalling a female of Pied Wagtail Al a yarrellir) with any intermediate . The pattern of black ort crown and throat is also variahle, joinin[•, at the hindneck in some males . Two birds seen bv 1 1 Chupin, V 1 C;rabovskí and myself on 1 5 Jcrne 1991 on the lower Bolshaia Balakhnia river had no eve-stripe, a medium-grey mantle and a limited white fringe on the upperwing-coverts, looking very like 4,1 a alba, and were consiclered as displaced migrants from the western part of the ,ti? a a lbadukfiune n sis cline . These observations were part ot a co-operation scheme hetween the'Office National de la Chasse' (Ministry of Environment, Franc:e) and the Institute of Evolutionary Morpholof;y and Animal Ecology (AC,idemy of Sciences), 7v'toscow, Russla . 1 am grateful to Kees Roselaar for his ( omments , References Chc,rnov, Y 1 1985 . Nearctic gull sQecies in Senegal and The Gambi a In their very interestinK article, Hoogendoorn & Stei nhaus ( 1990) presented a survey of the occurrence of Laughing Larus?cricilla, Franklin's t pipixcan, Bonaparte's L philaclelphia and Rink-hilled Gulls L defawarensis in the Western Palearctic . We do not discuss the various explanations developed hy Hoogendoorn & Stei nhaus (1990)about the presence of these species on this side of the Atlantic Ocean with which we qu ite agree . Interestingly, a significant proportion(c 35%,J of the Nearctic gulls observed in Senegal and The Gambia were recorded in spring twhen many reKularly wintering Palearctic gulls such as Lesser Black-backed L iuscus and Slack-headed GuNs J . ridibundus have left the region) . This temporal pattern suggests that at least some of them may have reached Africa via South America rather than through Europe as was afso noted for Laughing and Franklin's Gulls by Hoogendoorn & Steinhaus (1991)1 .

Allepea Ring-necked x Tufted Duck hybrrd at Goedereede in January 1991 Dirk Moerbeek (pers comm) hascommented on the alleged first-year male Ring-necked x Tufted Duck A,vthvacorlarisx fliligula hybrid in Elsermans(1991) . He is of the opinion that the whitish subterminal hand contrastinf; with the dark grey bill (plate 168) does not eliminate a first-vear male Tufted Duck .
We agree with this . As also the paler base of the bill can not be seen convincingly on the five slides taken from this bird, we consider it safer to assume that the duck is not a hybrid but a Tufted DuckReference Elsermans, S 1991 . Nearctic gulls in the Western Palearctic In the article by Hoogendoorn & Steinhaus (1990 1 on Nc: irctic: gulls in the Western Palearctic, the legend to plate 98 indicates that the depicted Ringbilled Gull Larus delawarerlsrs is in adtalt plumage . Hovvever, it stili shows sonie obvious characters of an immature bird, ie, a dark eye (pale-yellow in adult), pinkish bill and legs lyellow to greenish-
yellow in adultf and brownish patches on the tertials flacking in adultf . These points suggest that the bird is in its second-summer plumage . The third-winter plumage will be acquired after its complete moult (which already has started ; note that fresh adult primaries are growinW and will be finished by late autumn . ICBP news Problems of Maleo on Sulawes i For a lot of birders, Wallacea, in the centre of the Indonesian archipelago, is well-known because of its high numberof endemic species . In fact, 1CBP's Biodiversity Project has shown that it has more restricted-ranf;e bird species (with a range of less than 50 000 km=) than anywhere else in the world . Sulawesi, Wailacea's IarKest island, has c 80 endemics (White & Bruce 1986 ) . One of these is the Maleo Macrocephalon maleo. The Malco is a

Maleos are black-and-salmon-coloured birds about the size of a chicken . They lay their eggs an sun-exposed beaches or in volcanically heated soils, at a depth of 20-80 cm where the temperature is 32-35°C . They are communal nesters ; in the past, up to 100 birds would nest on one site . However, i llegal egg col lection and det;rad ation of their fores t

Mystery photograph s Li st issue's mystery photograph shows a Small seed-eating passerine with a noticeable crest, The obvious candidate is a lark, many of which have a prominent crest . However, despite the drab plumage and white outer rectrices common t o many lark species, there is sonnethint; that does not look right . The hody is relatively small, the legs are too short and the tail is noticeably lonf ;, all features not found in larks . Western Palearctic sparrowsdo not havewhite outer rectrices nor have many species oi finches ; those that do tend to have very obvious wing-bars . The combination of a long ( ai 1 with prom inent white outer rectrices, relatively small body and head, and drab plumage make this a member ot the bunting familv . This is confirmed bv the characteristic sharp angle on the cutting edges ot the mandihles . Looking at the bird more critically reveals a broad bufÍy supercilium extending írom the forehead to behind the prominent fanned crest, a very obvious dark mask and ton this photograph) a less obvious pale suh-moustachial and a harely perceptible dark malar stripe . The mantle is very sparrowlike hut this contrasts with a Krey rump . There is diftuse rufous streakinf; on the tlanks, reminiscent ot Rustic Bunting Emberiza rustica, bui the breast appears relatively unmarked . This combination ot
45
features, and particularly the prominent crest, are only shown by Yeliow-throated Bunting E elegans and the photograph shows a fema le of that species . The males are much more obvious, having a black mask and a black crescent on the upperbreast and a yellow supercilium and throar (plate 58) . The crest is obvious when the bird is alarmed but can 'disappear' when it is relaxed . Yel low-throated Buntingsare common over rnuch of their range, hreeding in Amurland, north-eastern and central China and Mongofia . They winter in Japan, Taiwan and south-eastern China . There has been a record of a male at Overveen, Noordholland, Netherlands, from 8 to 2 3 August 1989 which was considered an escape {Dutch Birdíni; 1 1 : 188, plate 130, 1989}, and a more recent record at Hildesheim, Niedersachsen, Germany, in January 1991 {Limicola 5 : 9 0 , 1991) . This species has been imported in reasonably large numbers into both the Netherlands and Britain in the last few years and 1 have myself seen several cages full of thern! Given that the dates of occurrence for both of these birds are hardly classical for Siberian vagrants, captive origin seenis most likely . Both of the birds shown here were photographed in captivity in Britain in November 1991 .

Recensie s P Arsrrto .tii, P Cour(ts & 1 Lrwivcrus 191)1 . A rieldguide to the rare óirds of Sritain and Europe. HarperCollins Puhlishers . L o ndon . 448 pp . 65 colour plates . ISBN 0d?011 941 %- .1 . C-, BP 14 .45 . This is the iirst field guíde in Europe that deals exclusively wilh rare birds . It iscalled'a book forthe keen birdwatcher' . New up-to-date editions are to be expected every 2vears . The species covered are true vagrants in Europe except those that have oc(:urred only on Malta as well as very rare breeding hirds in Europe that are not seen in large nurnbers on migration . Nearctic species that have reachcd Greenland, Madeira or the Canary Islands are saicl to he briefly mentioned ts potential vagrants to Europe but i could nol finrl examples . Lttle Blue Egretta caerulea and Tricolorecl Herons E tricolar, however, are hoth fully covered because thev occurred in theAzores once . Some 5pecies are mentioned because thev resemble other included species, eg, tndian Pond Heron Ardeola grayii or Louisiana Waterthrush Seiurus rt7otacilla . Yet, other species are in the book because there has been a European claim, líke Siberian White Crane Crus leucogeranus . The authors state that sonie earlfer records are perhaps now unacceptable . This could certainly he the case with Europe's onfy Dark Chanting Goshawk bfelierax ntetabates, a record in Spain whic .h, in mv opinion, reters to a pale-morph Booied Eagle Nieraaetus pennatus . Sonie vagrani I,sublspecies are also dealt wilh like Black Brant Brant .3 flerni[-!a nigricans, Green-winged Teal Anas crecca (.-arulinensis and Two-barred Greenish Warbler Ph ylluscopus pl umheita rsus but America n Herri ng Gull Larus ar gentatus smithsonianus is lacking, The problem of escapes has heen variously treated . Lesser Flamíngo Phoenicopterus rninor and Marbled Teal Marmaronerta angustirostris are fully covered, Emperor Anser ranagicus and Ross's Geese A rossii are just mentioned and described in the text whercas Northern Mockingbird Mimus polyglottos is erroneously omitted . The range of species covered hardly overlaps the contents of lhe Uacmillan field guide by Alan Harris et al or Ihe Pen g uin natureguides by' Lars lonsson, so these books supplement each other in a very usetul way . The 1 300 colour illustrations bv ian Lewinglon lin fact, there are less'.I, conveniently put together in the middle of the book, are very accurate and reliable . The colours in this edition tend to be too strong which makes Marmora's Warbler Sylvl :3 sarda tou blue and some Phylloscopus warbfers loo brown . Some birds, like the secondwinter White-eyed Gull !. leucophthalmus, are depicted as it they were about to lay an egg but this peculiarity will not prevent correct identification . On every plate, the birds are drawn to scale and the captions are clear . Al! resemblinK species are in tLte sanie posture which makes comparison easier. Azure Tit's Parus cvanus chest-stripe, however, is left out in this way . Thc juvenile Marsh San(lt)ipcr Trirtt;r 5tdfrtdfi7i5 wati ,t iurhris[' again, this

Thus, 1 will look out eagerly in the field fnr this plumage whirh . 1 think, is correclly depicted now, More than 10 plates show 'rlearctic passerines in all possible clresses . Per AIstrtim and Peter Colston have treated every species thoroughlv in the 1ex1 . The descriptive part varies in length depending on visual inforrnation provided by the colour plates and the severity of identification pitfalls . Philadelphia Vireo Vireo philadelldticus gets less than half a page whlle Citrine Wagtail MotacNla cifreola gets nearly 2 .5 pages . Sometimes, very useful line drawings have been inserled, eg, lail patterns in Rinf;-hilled Gull rdelawarensis, outer rectri(es and median wing-covens in Blyth's Pipit Anthus godlewskii, wing tormulae of Acrocephalus warhlers and underlail-coverts or Arctic Redpoll Carduelis hornemanni . Comparison with commoner species is made if necessary . The bird vignettes in the margins are pretty and, moreover, help to prevent a nervous birder, just having seen a rarity, reading under 1he wrong species . However, the vignettes of Orientai Giareola maldivarum and Black-winged Pratincoles G nurdmanni have been shifted . Unfortunately, key identification characters are not stressed by usirtf ; bold lettertype which could help avr)id dr .twing hasty conclusions. The bird's voice is given in a rather wefS-considereci system hut noi in most non-passerines . Also hahitat ancl hehaviour are menlioned as well as the breeding range Ino mapsl . Many hirders will b e interested in the bird's status in the various European countries . The aulhors have not side-stepped this troublesome chapter . The reader with a sense !or puzziing out things can contribute many corrections to this chapter undoubtedly needed in futureeditions of thehook, For instance, Italy's seven f!j Siherian Rubythroats Luscinia callioktvare intriguing, the occurrence of IZufous Turtle Dove Streptupelia orientalis in Greece is questionable, and the breeding status of Ruddy 5helduck Tarlorna t~i?rruhinea in Ihe Netherlands must he mitigated . Bird topography, terminology ±'jízz' could he defined somewhat sharperl, moult, ageing and plumages, something about migration routes of Amercan birds, where do vagrant species turn up and codes for rarítv-finders and twilchers, are all bric.tly bur usefullv treated in the introductory sections . Al the end of the Ixtok a few pages are dedicated to British Rarilies {with capítalsJ and how the hot news is spread . Such stories could, of course . also be writlen for some other European countries . The hibliography is, rortunatelv, much more 'European' . Next editions should contain even more s-ountries like, eg, the Baltic states . There are separate inclexes for English and scientific names . Surprisingly, a structural mistake has been made in the index of English niames for all, usually commoner species that are mentinned or depicled for comparison . They are indexed with t, page numl .ter only, without reference lo a bold-face pl,ate numher las in the real raritiesl bu1 this page numher i„ w ilhout any cxrep

Twenty vears after pubtication of duPont's Philippine hirds (1971), another hook on the birds of this archipelago has finally appeared ; it is the third publication in the BOU checklist series on the birds of south-eastern Asia . DuPont's hook was written in the museum and conlains little information on Ihe species, except tor the colour plates, which were quite useful . In fact, there ha ; been no comprehensive review of the Philippine avifauna since McGregor's ~1lanual of Philíp0ine birds 11910 . Both publications are now out of date, hecause of newly discovered species and many distributional and taxonomic changes . These changes are explained in this new book . Regreltably tor some, it is also no1 a field guideand has no iflustrations but for anyone seriously interested in the birds of the Philippines it truly is a monumental and invaluable work . The authors are Ihe foremost experts and have worked for many years on the avifauna of the Philippines, both in the museum and in the ficld . There are introductorv chapters on geography, ciimate, vegelation, hiogeography, geographic variation and speciation, breeding, mígration, hird conservation and a history of ornithofogical exploration i84 pages) . These chapters contain a wealth of íniormation . An exhauslive list of Al the relevant referenc :es up to 1990 is included . The svstematic list 1321 pagesr forms the largest part of the book and kives information on hahitat and distribution of all 55 6 species (169 endemic sl>ecies, of all subspecíes are endemicl found in the Philippines, including relerences . For example, alf natural forest on the islancl of Cehu is gone and all endemic forms are exlinct now, except forone! Notable taxonomic changes, sorne arhitrarv hut many reall y necessary and based upon new information, are explained in the svstematic section, with references . For example, the owl that DuPont called Otus sonia actuallv refers to five different endemic species svith unique calls and

It s noteworthy that a species discovered new lo science in 1990, the Paray Striped Babhier Stachyrfs latistri o ta is already included . ! think it is a pitv thal lhis work only uses rinf;ing records, collected specimens and records published in the literature . Field ohservaiions of ornitholoP,ists other than the authors are not taken into accounl . The reasons for Ihis may well be that ït is difficult to judge the value of such records or lo trace theni . Ancr[her minor criticism is the facl that the lav-out of the svstemalic list is a bit luss convenienily arranf;ed comisared to Ihe previouslv published BOU checkfists .
