VAN DE REDACTIE PRESTATIES THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RELATIVISTIC INTERDEPENDENCE OP SPACE AND TIME FOR SPACE FLIGHT AND OUR COSMICAI; ENQIRONS by Dr Ir J,M.J, Kooy HET LANDINGSPROBLEEM IN DE RUIMTEVAART

These n o t i o n s , a g a i n and a g a i n
confirmed by dayly experience, have become the base of our conventional outlook on the world. According to this outlook the world is an enormous system of instantaneous bodies, moving and developing in time, And if we think (still in conventional terms ) about the development of these bodies in time, we again try to repeat the same outlook by assumin that these bodies are composed of small elementary particle trying to explain all transformation by the motion of these particles, It appears that the same outlook can be applied throughout the region of the nearest celestial bodies, composing the planetary system. But as soon as the questi rises what time is on itself, and what now may essential1 be, the apparent clearness of this conventional outlook b gins to fade. We then realise that time can only have a r significance when it can be measured. And for this measur ment we require a clock, which is essentially a cyclic system of eventso with which other events (of which the duration must be measured) are compared. Obviously '>events" are primary and "time" has no real meaning independent on the events. From this the question rises, if the objective world may only be a world of events, and is only conceived by us (by virtue of o u r conventional outlook) as a world of spatial objects, developing in time. In other words: is the world such that past and future have the same degree of reality, including the present as "just completed past"? Indeed the answer of the theory of relativity is a confirmation in mathematical terms of this conception of ultimate physical reality. In order to point this out in simple terms, let us return to o u r space traveller, travelling with a speed comparable with the speed of light.

b ) Een stuk thermodynamica en w a r m t e o v e r d r a c h t s t h e o r i e , ter

Of
- 34 -
