For years Damon Savage has been searching for the stranger his parents wed him to without his consent, hoping to legally free himself from matrimony's invisible chains. And he is astonished to discover his "bride" is none other than the exquisite lady he'd hoped to make his mistress! But though his wife by law, Julia will never truly be Damon's—until he conquers her fears, his formidable rivals ... and her proud, passionate, and independent heart. This book swept me away from the first page - I started reading it whilst waiting at the dentist and I totally forgot to be worried about my filling! The female character was more strongly drawn than the male. I felt Damon resorted to brute force to get his way and although thrilling, I'm not convinced that Julia wouldnt have giving him his marching orders on account of braun over brain. Julia/Jessica is an actress who has refused to accept that she is married to a stranger. She is one of those exceptional talents who creates magic on stage. When she finally becomes part of an esteemed acting company she meets Damon her husband, who is immediately drawn to her. She keeps her identity secret but gets to know him when he becomes a patron of the theatre. Damon's family has used the dowry to recover from the brink of poverty to many successful business ventures. But along with that Damon has become so responsible and rigid he has never really cared for any woman. He does remember a country festival where a beautiful girl with a traveling acting
troupe danced around the maypole. He remembers kissing her and wanting her. Kawin gantung! Maybe one of the reasons that I loved this book so much is because of Julia. I related to her so well. It may be set in the olden days but her story felt so modern, that you could think it was in this age and time. She was brave and strong. She went into acting despite her family's disapproval and their eventual abandonement. She lived on her own and was superbly talented at her job, that required her to travel etc. I really want that for myself too someday.I wish that one day, I can find a job that I love as truly as she has.Her free spirit and her need to have a home of her own just speaks to me.
I really love the ending. I liked how Lisa showed their marriage. It made me swoon. This book is a must read for me. I read it within 2 days. Haha, considering that I'm knee deep in projects, it probaly wasn't the wisest idea to do, but I couldn't put it down. Sigh, now let me get back to my studying.(less) I enjoyed the novel. I'm a sucker for hidden identity plots. This novel involved Damon and Julia/Jessica though it is really more Julia's story. Damon's character isn't really fleshed out and tends to come off very high handed and more of a jerk. Since we have more of Julia's side of the story, you can't help but to be in her camp. (view spoiler)[ Okay, here's the part where I really have a problem accepting. She and Damon finally accept their relationship. How do they manage her stage career and her station in life? It's glossed over as if it were all okay except for two professionals but honestly, the Ton is not forgiving if not vicious. Especially with Pauline in the story who is aggressive and a very nasty character, do you think she wouldn't spread vicious gossip about Julia/Jessica or let them live happily ever after? Not that I want their ending to have hardship, its just the way it was wrapped up in the end that just made it so unbelievable to me. Plus, they only thwarted Pauline's scheme, but they really didn't effectively put an end to Pauline imho. She is such a nasty self-centered character, I just don't see her going quietly into the night after the foiled pregnancy plot. (hide spoiler)]["br"]>["br"]>(less) I enjoyed the atypical setting of this story, based on a "working girl" historical romance (and I'm not talking prostitutes). The heroine, Julia, chose a career instead of being a daughter of the aristocracy. She became an actress. She was somewhat forced into this career after being disinherited by her father, but since it was a passion of hers, not unbearable. She adopts a stage name and works with a acting group where she is required to solicit donations from the...more Based on audiobook - 3.5 stars So the plot of the story comes along when Julia is soliciting donations at a ball, she runs into her husband, Damon...who doesn't know who she is since they were married by their parents when they were both barely out of diapers. Since Julia is using an assumed name, Damon doesn't have a clue that this is the woman he has been searching for for 3 years in order to inform her that he was obtaining an annulment to their child marriage. Now, since this is a romance novel, you know the two people who shouldn't fall in love, do. Add in a power-hungry, money-hungry mistress and a woman who is emotionally scarred by a father who didn't care for her, you have all of the key elements of angst that any good romance novel should have. I really wanted to like the book more and honestly, through about 80% of the book I was into it. It was only til the end that I lost my love with it. I felt that Ms. Kleypas was trying to convince us that our hero/heroine should NOT be together, because they wanted different things in life and wouldn't be happy settling, even though there was this strong physical attraction. I found myself sad that I wanted them to break up. Of course, it is a HEA, so the H/H do come together. I just felt like there was all of this work to tear them apart and a very shoddy stapling job putting the two pieces back together again. I found myself looking forward to Logan's story before the end of this book was out, because I needed a romance where I was actually rooting for the couple. It’s a typical battle of wills story. The hero wants…something, most likely intimacy with the heroine as they seem to do that very well. The heroine, while enjoying the physical side of a relationship with her husband, is afraid of becoming ensnared by what the hero makes her feel. Which, invariably, will lead to having her wings clipped and she’ll see her acting career coming
to an abrupt and screeching halt. I’m not sure if I’m being fair, but I felt like this book didn’t have a whole lot of action. Upon reflection, other than a few brief bits of activity involving very minor characters, I didn’t feel like anything really took place. It felt like a rubber band match. A sparring of wills every time the hero and heroine meet. Instead she has to marry Logan? WTF?! That just came out of nowhere and made no sense. They could just build a partnership WITHOUT getting married...who would've thought? Yes, Julia doesn't want to have restrictions on her life, so let's just get married for obscure, drama producing reasons. For plot's sake, Julia feels like life with Damon is all or nothing.
