Snow Angels Fresh sparkling snow covered the ground. Our Girl Scout group from La Mirada, California, was ecstatic at the prospect of spending an entire weekend in the dazzling whiteness. Our troop, its four leaders and their husbands were excited to experience our first winter outing. Many of us had never seen snow up close. The snow motivated the youngsters to go outside and play. They busied themselves with snowing snowballs at one another, building snowmen and making snow angels. We as leader-mothers and our husbands surveyed the accommodations. The spacious cabin had been lent to us for our use by a generous parent. It was evening before I began to feel a sense of foreboding concerning the weather and our isolation. Snow had begun falling and the wind crashed against the cabin walls. Through a large picture window high in the second storey of the cabin, we could make out the branches of a tall tree as it creaked about in the constant blowing of the wind. This was my first snowstorm. Though I had seen snow on infrequent visits to these mountains, I had never seen it falling before. And fall it did, all night long. Finally, we all dozed off. In the morning, we sensed the gravity of our situation. The cabin sat beyond the region that the snow plough regularly serviced. Even we novices knew that there was no way to clear the road. The men dug a path to the cars and uncovered them but we were hopelessly cut off from the road. I, being the only Christian in our little group, began silently to pray for God’s providence and asked Him to send the snow plough up to our desolate stretch of road. Considering our isolation, the answer to my prayer request would be amazing indeed, but I continued until I felt the sense of peace that only God can give. Soon others around me expressed anxiety, casting nervous glances at the glowering skies and up the impassable road. The snow kept falling steadily and silently. A seemingly short time later, we heard a wonderful sound that happily pierced through the stillness of the falling snow. A heavy equipment plough was chugging up our hill. The operator told us, “I’ve never come up this far before, but I kept hearing something in my head that said, ‘Go up to the top today’. So here I am”. The word angel means a “messenger sent to carry out the will of God”. I have never seen an angel, but I felt the man who drove the snow plough on this errand of mercy was our personal “snow angel”. It was our Heavenly Father who was our real inspiration for this hour, our loving Heavenly Father who sees and speaks to all our needs with patience and deep caring. As the leaders were packing our kitchen supplies, one of them asked me, “I wonder what made the ploughman come up this far?” I simply smiled and said, “ I prayed”.
