Dr. Ramachandra Guha Ramachandra Guha is an Indian historian and columnist. He is the author of the widely acclaimed 'India after Gandhi. The history of the world’s largest democracy' (2007), which has been translated into many languages, including Dutch. Guha was ranked among the top 50 of India’s most powerful people by Bloomberg Businessweek in 2009 and in the top 100 public intellectuals in the world in 2008 by the US magazine Foreign Policy. In 2011-12, he is holding the Philippe Roman Chair of International Affairs and History at the London School of Economics.
Abstract: The Past and Future of Indian Democracy High annual growth rates (in excess of 8%), a rising middle class, and spectacular successes in the software sector have led to much talk, within and outside India, of the country becoming a superpower. It is said that just as the 20th century belonged to the United Kingdom and the United States, the 21st century will belong to China and India. This lecture will argue that largely unnoticed in the commentary on India's economic rise is the simultaneous decline in systems and structures of governance. These have led to, among other things, crony capitalism, a rising Maoist insurgency, and rampant environmental degradation. Other challenges include ethnic separatism, religious conflict and an unstable neighbourhood, likewise factors which tend to be ignored or underplayed in global discussions on contemporary India. This lecture will, on the other hand, focus on the political and institutional reforms required to safeguard India's democratic traditions, whose renewal is vital to sustained and inclusive economic growth.

The history of the world's largest democracy', dat ook in het Nederlands verscheen (Nieuw Amsterdam, 2010).
Abstract: The Past and Future of Indian Democracy Hoge groeicijfers (van meer dan 8% per jaar), een uitbreidende middenklasse en indrukwekkende vooruitgang in de software-sector leiden zowel in India als daarbuiten tot discussies over hoe het land een supermacht aan het worden is.
