F

rom the pen of the writer behind the beguiling True Detective, comes this remake of the 1960 classic, The Magnificent Seven (which was, in turn, a remake of the spectacular Akira Kurosawa film, Seven Samurai). The western is one of the oldest genres in filmmaking, so finding a new way to tell such a familiar tale is director Antoine Fuqua and writer Nic Pizzolatto's first hurdle; one which they jump over nimbly by giving the hotchpotch team a more inclusive spirit. This Magnificent Seven includes: a Japanese assassin, a Mexican, and an American Indian, and is headed by charismatic black leader Chisolm (played by Denzel Washington). This tweak proves to be one of the film’s wisest choices. In Pizzolatto’s reimagining, the desperate townspeople of Rose Creek employ protection from seven outlaws, bounty hunters, gamblers and hired guns after the town falls under the deadly control of industrialist Bartholomew Bogue (played by Peter Sarsgaard, who has quite a lot of fun

chewing on the scenery). As they prepare the town for the violent showdown that they know is coming, these seven mercenaries find themselves fighting for more than money. With cinematography by Academy Award winner Mauro Fiore (his previous credits include Avatar, The Kingdom and Training Day), it’s no surprise that the film looks as striking as it does; but what makes it so oddly familiar is likely that Fiore frames so much of the action in a way that it hearkens back to the classic westerns of the '50s and '60s. This makes it easier to accept some of the more unusual casting choices, such as the ever-likeable Chris Pratt who brings his irascible Han Solo-esque quality to his character, Josh Faraday – who is one of the first to sign up to what is surely a suicide mission. After working on Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy, Pratt feels firmly of the 21st century (and beyond), but by filming and scoring The Magnificent Seven in such a way that it’s utterly indebted to the past,

Pratt also begins to take on the qualities of those old films. Having such a large cast of principal and supporting characters does mean that some get lost in the shuffle, but Fuqua makes sure that they each get their moment in the sun before the credits roll (or before they find themselves riddled with bullets…). Ethan Hawke’s ex-military man (the fabulously named Goodnight Robicheaux) is a particular standout, and hopefully Hawke will be given more meaty, morally dubious characters like this now that he’s aging into older roles. Denzel Washington’s team leader, Chisolm, could support an entire prequel film, as he’s a fascinating figure, and Fuqua and co. really could have done with detailing just how Chisolm (and some of his more ethnically diverse team members) survives in the dangerous world that is 1870s America. But what we do get is effective in its own right: plenty of bombast, a touch of ingenuity, and a lot of charisma.

Before day's end, the world would bear witness to one of the greatest man-made disasters in U.S. history. Deepwater Horizon breaks down, with exacting detail, what happened on that fateful day; director Peter Berg takes his time getting to the big blowout that wrecked the rig; he shows us how the rig works, who is in charge of it, and how it can go wrong. Which is no small task, as the immense structure has so many moving parts that can go awry, and there are also a multitude of people who, if they make the wrong call, can set in

motion a domino effect unlike any other. But before he gets into the inner workings of the immense monstrosity, he gives us a snapshot of the lives of a few of the key personnel on the rig, including Mike Williams (a well-cast Mark Wahlberg, doing a good job of playing the quintessential everyman), his superior Jimmy Harrell (Kurt Russell, still as charismatic as ever), and Andrea Fleytas (played by Gina Rodriguez, best known for Jane the Virgin). Once we get to the rig, we meet the people in charge of keeping the oil flowing. The key member of the bunch is BP liaison Donald Vidrine (John Malkovich). As Berg follows the ins and outs of Harrell

and Vidrine’s disagreements, breaking down (rather effectively) why it’s so important – namely, Harrell believes it’d be unsafe to pump the oil without some rigorous checks, whilst Vidrine is focused on the millions they’re losing by ‘not working’ – the tension builds and builds. Until there’s only one way for it to be released… Once the pipe and its numerous failsafes give out, the film switches gear and follows the path of destruction. The torrent of mud and oil firing through the rig at pressures you wouldn’t believe, is a staggering sight, and is just the first of many stunning, yet also affecting, visuals conjured by Berg and his team.

liver Stone’s latest paranoid thriller is so quintessentially Stone-sian (not a word, but is now a word) that it’s as if the events that it recounts were brought to pass just so that he could film them with the help of a cast full of ringers (such as Tom Wilkinson, Rhys Ifans, Nicolas Cage, Melissa Leo, and several other noteworthies). For those who have been living under a rock/ in a cave/on the moon, the story follows this century’s most famous whistle-blower, Edward Snowden (played with technical accuracy by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and cuts back and forth between two timelines: 2004 onwards, showing his early days in the army and with the CIA; and 2013, in the lead-up to the leaking of thousands


of classified documents, showing that the NSA had been illegally surveying the American public, as well as America’s allies. This is very much Stone on familiar ground, as the story includes conspiracies, Machiavellian scheming, and general paranoia (his previous efforts in this realm include Nixon, JFK and Wall Street). Although the cinematography is more lo-fi and televisual than his previous output – this is used to subtly highlight the fact that the film is based on a true story, giving it a more documentary-like appearance – Stone’s visual flair occasionally comes out; most notably in the scene when the deputy CIA director (Rhys Ifans in full on evil-scheming mode) looms over Snowden from a floor-to-ceiling screen,

threatening his staffer both verbally and via his towering, Oz-like presence. As Snowden slowly unearths what his superiors have been up to – namely, illegally spying on the American citizenry – the beating heart of the story comes from his relationship with Lindsay Mills (Shailene Woodley), his on-again, off-again girlfriend. Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald (Stone’s co-writer) make this the beating heart of the story, even if it doesn’t always fit well with the story’s momentum. But Gordon-Levitt and Woodley make this work, against the odds. Snowden’s story is well worth telling, and although it sits a little uncomfortably in the template of a generic action-thriller, it still proves fascinating and eye-opening.

His past credits include 1988’s Beetlejuice, the heart-warming tale of Edward Scissorhands, and several adaptations of other literary works, such as Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and a live-action Alice in Wonderland. In Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, he embraces the peculiarities of Ransom Rigg’s bestselling novel and sticks close to the original plot: a young boy is told stories of a strange orphanage by his grandfather and travels to Wales to see for himself. Jacob successfully uncovers information about his family’s past, but unwittingly unleashes a world of demons far beyond his control and must navigate multiple time loops to protect his new friends. There are multiple twists and turns (and a number of time shifts that further complicate matters), which means that the narrative often threatens to run away with itself, and some of the darker elements come close to being a little too unnerving for younger audiences; but, Burton has always known that children are more resilient than we give them credit for. (A lesson he likely learned from The Brothers Grimm.) With characteristic Burton darkness and flair, we witness a number of striking images: a tiny doll’s heart beating; undulating tongues plucking at plates of eyeballs; and people being frozen in place by a single touch. Attention to detail is king, with striking production design and odd off-kilter costumes making the world of the film come to life. It would be wrong, however, to imply the

story is one of style over substance. The characters are all loveable in their own way and Eva Green fully embodies the quirkyyet-caring headmistress with a fantastic performance. Her interaction with each peculiar child is so sincere and heartfelt that Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children is imbued with a surprising amount of emotion, which is also hammered home by a buoyant and stirring score. Whether you’re a lover of the original book, a Tim Burton fanatic or a fantasy aficionado, catch this visual treat onboard today.

Gunawan (Abimana Aryasatya), his beautiful wife, Itje (Ira Wibowo), and their two small children, Satya and Chakra, are a happy family unit. Everything seems perfect, until Gunawan receives the medical check-up report which states that he has only one year left to live. Upon learning this, both Gunawan and Itje are utterly devastated, and cannot stop crying.

But what really hits home for Gunawan is that, as his two boys are still very young, he isn’t going to be able to offer them the guidance and support that is his duty as their father. His workaround: he makes many many recordings for Satya and Chakra. After Gunawan passes away, Itje and the children sit together and watch a new recording every week on a Saturday.
