Hungarian Region
I. Core Values and Aims
Our Hungarian Region is fully integrated into the worldwide ecumenical movement. As regards relations between denominations we can distinguish several stages in the history of Christianity:
The first stage is when we are enemies, full of anger and historical wounds, which keep being torn open.
Next, we begin to tolerate each other’s existence without religious wars and excommunication; at the same time, however, it is only our own denomination which we consider infallible and capable of leading us to eternal salvation.
Now we no longer turn the pages of the Bible when we come across the lines where Jesus Christ or His disciples speak about love among Jesus Christ’s followers; rather, these lines set us thinking seriously.
As a grassroots organisation, we believe it is our task to stop and look around from time to time in order to assess our progress. As for our church leaders, we expect them to take this wish of ours seriously and, with due circumspection, to take the necessary measures.
Let it be our strong hope that mutual love will create an atmosphere which is conducive to this and that we will reach our goal through theological work. Both of the above are indispensable for our journey towards the visible unity of the Church.
1. Worship and Spirituality
1 / 15
Hungary
Such events include the annual Common Week of Prayer in January; the ecumenical events relating to contemporary martyrs organised by the Saint Egidio community; the most recent liturgies connected with the celebration of creation; different Focolare events as well as the ecumenical liturgical events organised on the occasion of the Year of the Bible, to mention but a few.
2. Ecumenism, Discipleship and Theology
Our events give us a chance to organise presentations and follow-up publications primarily in our periodical ÖKUMENÉ which has seen sixty-six issues.
There is a wide range of topics. Although one third of the articles deal with ecumenism and theology, other issues are also discussed with the aim of reaching a common Christian position.
In order to achieve the visible unity of the Church, we are careful to invite speakers from as many denominations as possible, and the same holds true for the authors of articles. Presentations given at each other’s meetings help to take the edge off differing or opposing views.
Invariably, leaders of the three ‘historic’ churches (Roman Catholic, Calvinist-Reformed and Evangelical-Lutheran; which together represent over 80% of all believers in Hungary) act as patrons of our annual conferences. These, as well as each presentation during the year, are advertised in the denominational press of these three churches.
We also attend the events of other ecumenical associations and institutions, trying to make a contribution to the topic under discussion; eg. the Pax Romana Association, the (Second Vatican) Council Club, the Evangelical-Lutheran Fraternity, the Ecumenical Meals in Farkasrét (a neighbourhood in Budapest), or the Bioethics Society.
3. Fellowship and Friendship
2 / 15
Hungary
The Magyar Region keeps an eye on and supports our African Christian friends’ efforts in a society where other religions are becoming a majority, for example in Nigeria; we hope that these countries will be able to maintain religious and social peace, upholding their religious and civil rights.
Our friends are trying to protect themselves by forming an international organisation with a much wider range of activities (the organisation is being registered now) thus aiming to become more and more important for society. Also, they are recruiting members from increasingly more African countries, especially those with a Christian majority.
II. History
In 1983 many of us started to attend regular meetings in the home of physician and theologian Gaizler Gyula to discuss Christian responses to current social problems. It was not a registered non-governmental organisation (NGO), for at the time they were not permitted.
We called the meetings tea parties, and in this way they were tolerated by the authorities. We kept emphasizing that we were not involved in any political activities. Topics included education, moral formation, the situation of families, health, population decrease, the protection of the environment and the like.
In 1988 there was a change in the country’s situation. Parliament passed legislation, which made it possible to form NGOs. The tea parties were transformed into different NGOs, including the Christian Ecumenical Fellowship, or KÖT for short. We pride ourselves on being the sixth NGO to be registered in Budapest.
The IEF appeared on our horizon when our late president attended a conference in Wien, where he met IEF founding member Wolf von Lupin. This was followed in 1992 by a visit to Budapest by some members of the German Region.

Hungary
We were represented by a speaker at the annual IEF conference in Seggau, Austria, where we were given a chance to introduce ourselves to the IEF community. Since then IEF conferences have always had Magyar participants.
Those taking part in IEF conferences felt an increasing urge to settle our relationship with IEF. It was not until the 1995 conference, however, that we declared our wish to create an IEF group within KÖT.
Finally, on our initiative, in 1999 under the presidency of Richard Hill, the IEF leadership officially approved the foundation of a Magyar Region with fifteen members.
III. Structure
Our region has its own leadership: president, vice-president and treasurer. They lead the region make decisions in accordance with the general assembly. The region has its own budget. The President and an authorised delegate attend the international General Assembly (GA).
Just like KÖT events, Magyar Region events are usually only attended by active members living in Budapest. Nevertheless, we have members in numerous places throughout the country. In addition, there are many Magyar sympathisers across the borders. Furthermore, our Austrian friends are still represented by a few members. Finally, there are some Magyars living in Western Europe who take an interest in our activities.
The Magyar IEF Region currently has twenty members, only three of whom unfortunately are under forty. All the rest are over sixty. This ageing holds even truer for the rest of KÖT membership.
IV. Activities and Conferences
Every year we hold about ten meetings. We deal with current problems in society and in the life

of the churches from a Christian perspective; eg. religious education at school, the introduction of a university course on ecumenism.
Also, ecumenical progress in relation to Magyar churches; a search for common ground in theology, spiritual movements, sister organisations, social problems as seen from a Christian viewpoint and how the churches should be involved in those.
Similarly, Christian formation and education, our relationship with Jewish people, the appreciation of other world religions, or our common Christian duty for environmental protection.
Besides our regular meetings (on the first Monday of each month during the academic year), we have also organised some very memorable events.
One such was a follow-up to the Roman Catholic and the Augsburg Evangelical-Lutheran churches’ Augsburg Agreement on Justification. The other event assessed the influence of John Calvin and Martin Luther on the Roman Catholic church.
The former event was honoured by the presence and evaluation of top church leaders, whereas the latter was a lecture organised by KÖT and the Protestant Association for the Promotion of Public Culture, and given by a Magyar professor living abroad (Gánóczy Sándor, former professor of dogmatics in Würzburg).
The ecumenical event of this year is the Year of the Bible announced for 2008 by the Magyar Ecumenical Council of Churches. It is not only for religious organisations, which are extremely active organising lectures, conferences and exhibitions, but for secular institutions: there are radio and television programmes and concerts on Biblical themes.
It will be followed by the Year of Saint Paul announced by the Vatican (lasting from June this year to July next year).

Hungary
The annual thematic conferences give us an opportunity for deeper contemplation and discussion together. Thus we had a Year of the Holy Spirit in 1998, a Year of the Son in 1999, a Year of the Father in 2000, and in 2008 it was the Year of the Bible.
Over the years we have dealt with ecumenical marriages and families, a comprehensive survey of spiritual movements, great world religions, special missions (like prison, railway station, alcohol and drugs missions) in Hungary, and the social teaching of the Christian churches.
We have commemorated the Christian victims of religious persecution (the victims of communism in our circle as well as the sufferings of Christians in the Third World), and we have talked about a Christian interpretation of work.
Since 1989 the lectures which have been deemed to be of interest for a wider circle have been published in a KÖT paperback edition called Ecumenism in Christ, and since 1995 in a proper registered periodical entitled ÖKUMENÉ. In this periodical we have had almost thirty reports on the IEF, mostly covering IEF conferences.
In the three latest issues of ÖKUMENÉ a special emphasis was given to the reports on the lectures in Sibiu, some of which have been published in full. Six of our twenty IEF members attended this assembly. Our region has an IEF Circular Letter, which our members receive a few times a year.
In 2003 Budapest hosted the 35th International IEF Conference. The theme of the conference was John 13,35: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” We applied this passage to the relationships between denominations.
In conjunction with the conference a survey was carried out in all the regions. On the one hand, the survey was aimed at evaluating the emotional relationships between denominations. On the other hand, respondents filled in a two-page questionnaire of very concrete questions examining the signs of ecumenism in everyday pastoral work.
Answers came from ten countries, from regional leaderships, Christian youth organisations as

well as church leaderships. They were processed and published in a separate booklet, which was sent in English to the IEF leadership and individual regions.
There was a detailed report on the survey on a KÖT “first Monday” and at our next conference. Both the religious programme of the Magyar Television and Kossuth Radio broadcasted interviews about the conference. Those interviewed included the main organiser of the conference, some speakers and some foreign participants.
Copies were given to several Christian student and youth organisations and people actively supporting our conference (either spiritually or by endorsing it publicly). We made a German summary for our Austrian friends and a Magyar summary for the readers of ÖKUMENÉ, so it was made available for a wider public.
The Magyar delegation put up a strong plea to relaunch theological work in the IEF. As a result, the Theological Commission was re-established from regional delegates, with a Magyar delegate being elected moderator.
At the Písek Conference we could see the result of their work in the Statement on Eucharistic Sharing, which leaves it to a responsible conscience to decide at what denominational liturgies to take the Eucharist.
V. Hopes and Vision
It is our hope now that on the occasion of the Year of the Bible and Year of Saint Paul the Magyar Roman Catholics and Protestants involved will have more opportunities to talk about the important issue of Holy Scripture.
More than ever, we are endeavouring to address all Christian denominations besides Roman Catholics, Evangelical-Lutheran and Calvinist-Reformed Protestants.
7 / 15
Hungary
We also hope that Christian unity will become more visible in practical pastoral work. It would be good if a survey carried out in a few years’ time convinced us that significant progress had been made in terms of the visible signs, proving that ecumenism had become more widespread and better established.
In a multi-religious world we must support those – wherever they live and whatever denominations they belong to – who are seriously threatened by annihilation in a society dominated by only one religion.
Interreligious dialogue is desperately needed so that religions can co-exist in peace, understanding and respect.
Christian presence and witness is one of the most urgent problems and a key to peace in the near and distant future of humankind; a bigger problem than climatic changes or globalisation, to mention but a few.
But, after all, ecumenism is not a matter of taste, it is our obligation.
Magyar Régió
I. Alapvető értékek és célok
A Magyar régió része a világméretű ökumenikus mozgalomnak.

Újabban ilyenek a teremtés ünnepéhez kapcsolódó szertartások, illetve a különböző Focolare-alkalmak, továbbá például a Biblia éve alkalmából szervezett egyes ökumenikus szertartások.

2003-ban Budapest adott helyet a Nemzetközi Ökumenikus Társaság 35. találkozójának, amelyet a mi régiónk szervezett. Ezúttal e szentírási idézetet elsősorban a felekezetek közötti viszonyra értettük.
