DRAMA, ROMANCE For centuries upon centuries, scholars and knights have roamed the land for the fountain of youth. From mighty mountains to cryptic caves, these travellers have searched high and low to uncover the power of everlasting beauty. It turns out they only needed to go to San Francisco. Typical! Paramount Pictures brings you The Age of Adaline, a romantic drama that follows Adaline Bowman (Blake Lively) after a freak accident – involving a car crash, freezing cold water, and a lightning bolt – leads to her body becoming ageless. As Adaline stays in her late 20s, and as the years and then the decades go by, she finds it more and more difficult to hide what’s happening to her. Though the premise is magical, the tone and emotional journey of the film is wholly real.

Having a never-aging principle opens the door to exciting settings, costumes, storylines and character development. But the really interesting element of the movie is watching Adaline’s efforts to maintain a stable, believable life in a world that is constantly changing. Although she adapts well, her affliction – and it’s as an affliction that she perceives her gift – eventually leads to awkward questions, threats and heartbreak. Lively is supported by an extremely able cast: Game of Thrones fans will be happy to see Michiel Huisman as a charming admirer; there’s the incomparable Ellen Burstyn, who deftly handles the difficult role of playing the aging daughter to Lively’s ageless mother; and last but not least there’s the legendary Harrison Ford, who plays awed and dumbstruck better than anyone alive – his character is one of only a handful of people who could unearth and expose Adaline’s secret.

The Age of Adaline is a refreshing romantic movie which isn’t afraid to mix fantasy and nostalgia in a modern-day environment. Lively does well in the leading role, portraying a seemingly young woman who has actually been around for 107 years. Over this time she’s become highly refined and cultured, and has picked up a mass of information – yet she maintains a humble attitude which leaves strangers flattered and lovers besotted. Although the movie deploys the usual tried-andtested romantic clichés, that’s okay. The magical premise and the unpredictable story gives plenty of room for us to enjoy grand, yet corny, romantic gestures. DRAMA The Before films have always been a harder sell than they ought to be. They’re full of easy conversation, wry humour and an awful lot of chemistry; as a bonus, they also feature the charming street views of either Vienna, Paris or the Greek Peninsula (Vienna being the setting of the first film, Paris – the second, the Greek Peninsula the third). The central pair, Celine (Julie Delpy) and Jesse (Ethan Hawke), walk mile after mile through these beautiful European cities and talk of everything and anything. In Before Sunrise (film number one) the pair talk about fixing the world because they’re young, naive, and a little bit pretentious. But their naivety stems from their youth, and their easy likeability makes it far from difficult to forgive their pretensions. Although Sunrise is a slight film, it’s an easy one to love. Celine and Jesse meet on a train and disembark in Vienna, where they spend the night walking around the city and getting to know each other. They talk about themselves, their aspirations, and most everything else covered under the fairly expansive: life, the universe and

everything. Which sounds like it’d be trying – yet it’s not. The characters are so well drawn that they reel you in. (This becomes truer with each film, as Hawke and Delpy were co-writers on both the sequels, and added parts of their own lives to their characters, history.) The film ends on an ambiguous note; it’s up to the viewer to decide whether they ever meet again. The optimists and romantics believe they do, the realists are unsure but want to believe it’ll work out, and the pessimists believe that distance and circumstance will be more than enough to keep them apart. Each film ends in similar fashion, leaving the viewer to decide whether the pair will make it. Filmed and set nine years later, Before Sunset is structured just like the first, this time set over a single afternoon spent walking and talking in Paris. To say more about the plot of Sunset or Midnight (set yet another nine years further down the line) would be to give too much away. In the years since the first film Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy’s stars have risen, crested, fallen, and

then risen again. Hawke in particular is in the midst of a career resurgence thanks to Richard Linklater – who happens to be the director of the Before films – releasing the long-in-production Boyhood last year. Hawke is now becoming a mainstay of unusual, dark, but thematically compelling indie films (such as Predestination, Cymbeline, Daybreakers and numerous others). But, should his star ever wane again, we (and he) can fervently hope that Linklater will return to check up on how the hyper-articulate Celine and Jesse are doing. If you like meeting new people, going to new places, chatting about nonsense, then you’ll like these films. If you don’t like any of that... you’ll still like these films. In fact take what I’ve written above, then imagine a group of films that are twice as good as what I’ve described. You can find the first film in the trilogy on board today!

CLASSIC FEATURE

ACTION, CRIME Another year, another bombastic, adrenaline (and nitro) fuelled ride through the world of Dominic Toretto and his crew, who return in the sixth sequel to what was, at the time, little more than a fun and frivolous B-movie. Somewhere between the third and fourth sequel to The Fast and the Furious the series morphed into something rather different. With the introduction of Dwayne Johnson – a man who’s more mountain than man – the films dialled up the cartoonish quality that was always inherent in them, and converted the action sequences into vast, borderline insane set-pieces, capable of levelling a city, should the city dare get in the way. The first film was hardly grounded, but it was clear that it took place in a world that at least resembled our own. With each successive film the series has stepped further away from our reality and entered a place where gravity need not be adhered to, where bullet wounds and broken arms can be shrugged off, where every car is destined to have its day – and where having its day mostly consists of getting to take part in unbridled, awe-inspiring destruction. In short, the world it’s set in is as fun as ever, but it now has a healthy helping of the fantastical. Although there’s an argument to be made that one need not worry too much about plot, here is the bare bones set-up: the crew return to

the United States with the intention of living something that resembles a normal life but fate, not all that surprisingly, has other plans, as the older brother of Owen Shaw is out for revenge. (Owen was the big bad villain in the last instalment of the franchise.) To fend off Owen’s brother (Jason Statham) the crew will have to take part in stunts so death-defying that you might be forced to conclude that what you’re watching is an elaborate retelling of their impossible feats, recounted for the pleasure of the gods of Valhalla. (After all, if the crew are going to go to any afterlife, it’s surely Valhalla.) So what are you waiting for? Catch Dominic and co. on board today! As the title of Rupert Goold’s film attests, what follows is true, but that doesn’t mean it’s as straightforward as it might appear: On December 19th, 2001 a body was found floating in the waterway in Waldport, Oregon. A further search led to three other bodies being discovered – two of them in the home of family man Christian Longo. All three bodies were members of Longo’s family. Not long after, Longo was arrested in Mexico where he was using an assumed name, that of Michael Finkel, a New York Times reporter. It’s possible this story would have ended there, but around the same time as Longo’s arrest Finkel had been fired by the New York Times for fabricating a news story based on young African workers, so when he learnt his name was being used by an apparent murderer, the unemployed journalist became caught up in understanding this man – a man whose sensibilities seemed to mirror so many of Finkel’s own. In trying to understand Longo, Finkel found his grip on the truth becoming ever more precarious… James Franco (Longo) and Jonah Hill (Finkel) are better known for their comedies than their serious dramatic work, and at first glance they seem an odd pairing for this story – but Franco has always had an unhinged energy about him, whilst Hill has shown that he’s more than capable of playing the straight man rather than the buffoon (most notably in Moneyball). With a disturbing true story at its centre, this character piece allows both actors to really explore their

range, which is particularly evident in the numerous tense scenes when Finkel interviews Longo – many of which are filled with unsettling silences and spare paired-down dialogue. Goold’s film has a lot to say about how we perceive ourselves, and how we lie to ourselves when our perceptions fail to match up with our reality. The truth is disarmingly malleable. Both Finkel and Longo twist and warp it, but for very different reasons. Catch this twisted psychological thriller on board today and see if you can separate truth from fiction! BROOKLYN NINE-NINE COMEDY The 99th precinct in Brooklyn has a new captain, the no nonsense Ray Holt (played by the incomparable Andre Braugher), and he has his work cut out for him. Amongst his team of eccentric detectives are Jake Peralta (a very well-cast Andy Samberg) – he’s a non-conformist joker; Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) – she’s tough, smart and really scary; Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) – far from the most brilliant of detectives, but a hard worker; Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) – she has seven brothers, so she’s always out to prove herself; and, lastly, Terry Jeffords (a cast-against-type Terry Crews) – he’s the chief detective, but he’s lost the passion for the chase since becoming a father. In one of the

pilot episode’s best gags Jeffords details all of the above in succinct (and somewhat narrator-like) fashion, neatly bringing the audience up to speed on who’s who. For a while now the Saturday Night Live alumus Andy Samberg has been in need of a decent comedy vehicle for his talents, and it seems he’s found it. Peralta manages to be loud, brash, obnoxious, and immensely punchable – and yet also rather likeable. Samberg’s prone to playing larger-than-life personas, but they’ve never seemed liked they could exist in the real world, often coming across more like living cartoons than real people. Samberg’s Peralta, although still larger than life, feels real and fleshed out, and it’s

for that reason that Brooklyn Nine-Nine is likely to run for a good while yet. Andre Braugher, who plays the new captain, has a strong track record when it comes to comedy (particularly in the under-seen Men of a Certain Age), but most will known him through his dramatic work and will likely be surprised at how good a foil he is to the livewire Samberg. The rest of the cast seem to be good fits for their roles, but they get short shrift in the pilot, which has to work hard and fast to set up the status quo for the season to come. Given the quality of the writing on show, it’s clear they’ll all eventually get a chance to shine. Catch the series on board today!

ALA CHEF JUNA COMEDY In the ongoing series Ala Chef Juna, you’ll learn how to make simple and delicious Indonesian flavoured beverages and dishes with the help of the handsome and renowned Chef Ala’s guidance. During this month’s episode Chef Ala will demonstrate how to make the cooling, refreshing, and mouth-watering Buah pisang raja juice, which is especially popular during the hot season. In an effort to help, here’s a breakdown of what you need to know: to start you’ll need four bananas. To prepare them you’ll need to peel them and cut them into thin slices. Put them all into the blender, together with 160 millilitres of apple juice, two tablespoons of palm juice, 50 millilitres of coconut milk, a handful of ice, and two tablespoons of sweet sauce. After that, stir them thoroughly until all ingredients are properly mixed, then turn on the blender for approximately four minutes to mix and blend everything into a chocolate-coloured juice. Then pour the blend into a glass. The next part is decoration. First, take a fresh strawberry and slice its head off, then cut the

main body of the strawberry in half. Using only one half of what you’ve cut, carefully part the strawberry with three slices without breaking it, and place it on the edge of the glass. Then add some white crème on top of the juice and place a green mint leaf on top of the crème – and the Buah pisang raja juice is complete. DEATH CAB FOR CUTIE – KINTSUGI Whilst unpacking during my latest jaunt abroad, my teacup smashed to pieces on the hotel floor. This wasn’t just any teacup: it was the one that I have taken with me on all long journeys, believing, as I do, that my favourite Java Malabar tea won’t taste the same in any other cup. As I looked over the pieces I noticed my MP3 player had started to play the new album by Death Cab for Cutie, Kintsugi, which I had been looking forward to listening to for some time, and was

saving for a special moment – probably one which would involve a cup of tea… As Ben Gibbard’s distinctive vocals started to fill the room I soon forgot my recent mishap and paid closer attention to DCFC’s first studio album since 2011, which is also set to be the last to feature Chris Walla, who has been a songwriter, producer and guitarist in the band from the very beginning. The lead single, “Black Sun”,

demonstrates the articulate prose the band is known for and leads into an album which goes over familiar territory whilst also suggesting a new beginning. However, for those of you who have adored Gibbard’s angst-filled songs over the years, “Little Wanderer” delivers it in spades, whilst “Everything’s a Ceiling” and “The Ghosts of Beverly Drive” both offer a foot-tapping remedy to those less optimistic outpourings, although the lyrics are as prone to bleak musings as ever; but I don’t think any true fans of the band would have them any other way. “Kintsugi” is the Japanese term for mending broken ceramics with precious metal-infused lacquer to highlight the repair rather than disguise it, and this is exactly what DCFC have done. As the band faces monumental changes in their line-up and style, they are embracing this new look and feel to forge a new beginning, but they still leave us with enough of themselves to know that this is an exciting new beginning. I just hope my broken cup can be repaired, in “Kintsugi” fashion or otherwise. I suspect it’ll fare much as DCFC: it will be markedly different, but the tea will taste as good as ever.

The inflight entertainment homepage will appear when the crew activates the entertainment system. Use the Mode key on your handset to activate this screen. Once activated, the system provides easy on-screen access by simply touching the different category buttons. Just follow the entertainment screen of your choice to reveal a wealth of exciting in-flight entertainment options.
