Specific Example for Okres and Parish •Determining the Okres-the long way • Options for determining the Parish • Specific example-village of Oldřiš

Most of this will be for the specific example: the village of Oldris under the Zamrsk Archives.
FROM: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regions_of_the_Czech_Republic
Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide. Remember this map? I do know that Oldris is in the Pardubicky kraj. There is a related Wikipedia website to determine the okres within this kraj.
Districts (okres) within the Pardubice Region (kraj)

Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide.
There are “okres” (districts) within each “kraj”. Some sources use the term “county.” This one shows the 4 districts for Pardubice Kraj; note there is a Pardubice District, and the chief town is Pardubice. On the right is given the names of the okres and the area, population and # of municipalities. Clicking the name (column) links you to another Wikipedia article with a listing of the towns and villages (best way to confirm your okres).
FROM: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Svitavy_District
Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide.
This is what you get after clicking on Svitavy; notice the listing of towns and villages (red arrow) at the bottom (you may have to click “show” in the right margin). This is one place to verify your village is, in fact, within this okres/district. There is a village of Oldris, further down; that is our example. I chose Oldris because its parish changes over time and these parishes can only be accessed online under separate archives (one is Zamrsk, the other is FamilySearch). How did I know there were 2 parishes?

I used a site called GenTeam. It is Felix Gundacker’s site covering the Austrian Empire. It is one of the more helpful sites in determining your parish and its archive. It does not include Slovak Republic locations. It is free, but you must register to use the databases. Select gazeteer. Enter location and crown land; Oldris in our case. The okres/district is not given in this database.
Click the one of interest to see details.
FROM: genteam.at (Felix Gundacker)
Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide. This is the detail screen for Oldris. It gives the parish, Borova, for this village along with the beginning dates of the bap, m and d records for this parish. It also shows the former parish, Policka, for Oldris along with the beginning dates of the bap, m and d records for this former parish. There may be overlap when the new parish is formed so may have to check both places.

Another site, worth mentioning, for determining the kraj is the fallingrain site. I know from doing map research and knowing related villages that the Oldris slightly to the south (lower one) is the one of interest.

FamilySearch has a list of towns in the Czech Republic called a Parish Finder which shows their corresponding parish and historical judicial district. Just the N’s and the O’s occupy many pages.
The historical judicial district may contain the older records (early 18th century and 17th century in the example shown).

Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide. This is the map provided by the Zamrsk archives to show which parishes have been digitized and whether they can be viewed on the Zamrsk website (orange) or on FamilySearch (green) (others-not completed). Initially they were not redundant, but now some are available on both FamilySearch and downloadable from the Zamrsk website. This map changes as that occurs.

Sample page from Zamrsk inventory list. Note the village of interest, Oldris, is listed; also it’s historical judicial district and earlier parish, Policka. The last 2 lines of these headings indicate the records are Catholic and give info on parish, diocese, okres and kraj. Note that the baptisms (N) only start in 1787; earlier records are found under Policka. Clicking on the “zip” file opens the file for review of the baptismal book or allows you to download for future reference and review. The download could take nearly an hour to perhaps 2 hours.

Sample page from Zamrsk inventory list. The earlier records for the village of interest, Oldris, as well as Borova, are found under Policka. Note that the baptisms (N) start in 1642 in this parish book for Policka and include the villages of Oldris and Borova. Since there is no “zip” file mentioned for Policka, so it will only be found in FamilySearch. Take careful note of the “sign. 1652” (or Inventory #). Here is how to locate this parish book in FamilySearch.
Access FamilySearch.org; select “Continental Europe.” Scroll to Czech Republic (or Slovakia); click line; choose “browse images:”

1. Contains records for : Litoměřice, Třeboň (a few record books), and Zámrsk (essentially complete for parishes listed). 2. Opava entry will merge under #1 by October. 3. Extensive Třeboň record books for places “A” to “Či”-entry will disappear later.
4. Contains 90 okres/counties of Slovakia; complete or nearly so.

Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide. 1. The Church Books, 1552-1948 are currently from the regional Archives of Litoměřice, Třeboň, and Zámrsk (about 2.9 million images). This is where all of the church book images for the Czech Republic will eventually be when completed. Background info provided by the FamilySearch Collection Manager for Eastern Europe: When they strted the Czech Republic records they used a new process for capturing digital images instead of microfilming. However, when the digital records were brought back to Salt Lake for processing it was discovered that some of the images were inaccessible. The data was there, but could not be accessed. They called this the “Black Hole”. Opava and some Třeboň records fell victim to the “Black Hole”. Eventually a portion of those records were retrieved and temporarily placed under separate headings (2. and 3.) These will eventually be merged into item 1. At present Family Search has no way of determining what % of records are completed for any given archive. They are working on a solution and the Czech Republic will be their test case. Also, about a dozen district (okres) archives are being scanned (mainly in Opava). 2. The Northern Moravia, Opava Archive Church Books, 1571-1905 (will disappear by October 2012) 3. The Southern Bohemia, Třeboň Archive Church Books, 1650-1900 (will disappear later) (advise use of the state regional archive) 4. Further down is the link to all Slovak Church and Synagogue books. More details will be given when we discuss the Slovak records. When we select #1 (which includes Zamrsk) we get the following screen:

Please review these notes, then refer to the previous slide. After selecting “Church Books, 1552-1948” we are presented with this screen. If your people were Protestant you need to search both Catholic and Protestant records for a time period after 1781. (In 1781 Emperor Joseph II issued the Patent of Toleration which recognized Protestantism and Judaism throughout the empire and allowed separate record keeping.) For our example we’ll select “Catholic.”

You must now select the desired “place” (Místo=town) (or parish). In this case Policka. Note the absence of Borova since it can only be viewed from the Zamrsk archive.

This is a scrolling list of baptismal, marriage and death records that can be searched. Notice the “(v. 1652)” is the volume of baptisms for the years 1642 to 1764 just as shown in the Zamrsk Inventory List. Above it are listed several indices; 2 of which cover the year range of our volume. The indices are usually arranged by first letter of the surname and then by date; sometimes one index is for “male” baptisms and another for “female” baptisms. Within the record books the entries may be organized by date regardless of village or divided village-by-village. At the end of a book you may find a heading for entries of soldiers (vojak or vojensky). Thus, we have located our records for Oldris in both the Borova Parish via Zamrsk Archive and the Policka Parish via FamilySearch.
