1.1 A lelôhely
1.1 The site Paks – Cseresznyés lelôhely Paks városától mintegy 5 km-re, északnyugatra, a Cseresznyés városrészhez vezetô mûút mellett helyezkedik el, a Csámpai-patak és egy névtelen vízfolyás által közrefogott, északnyugat–délkeleti irányú dombháton. Az északkelet – délnyugati hossztengelyû, 400 x 250 méter kiterjedésû régészeti lelôhelyen 1959-ben, helyi bejelentésre, Mészáros Gyula szekszárdi múzeumigazgató járt, ahol embercsontokat, téglatörmeléket, koporsószegeket, pártatöredékeket talált, a terület kiemelkedô részén. Régészeti kutatásra ekkor azonban nem került sor. Az M6 autópálya építését megelôzô terepbejárások alkalmával a szekszárdi Wosinsky Mór Múzeum munkatársai rögzítették a lelôhely pontos helyzetét és kiterjedését (M6 TO-018
The site Cseresznyés is located around 5 km north-west of Paks, next to the county road leading to the city quarter of Cseresznyés, on a north-western–south-eastern oriented hill surrounded by the Csámpai brook and an unnamed stream. The site, extending 400 x 250 m with a north-eastern – southwestern longitudinal axis, was examined by Gyula Mészáros, the director of Szekszárd Museum, in 1959 following a report by locals. He found human remains, brick fragments, coffin nails and bandelet fragments on the projecting area of the site. No archaeological excavation was conducted at this point, however. During the field surveys preceding the construction of the M6 Motorway, the staff of the Wosinsky Mór County Museum of Szekszárd

K.Ö.SZ. Évkönyv / F.S.C.H. Yearbook – 2008 lelôhely: Németh 2006, 140). A településnyomok a középkorban elpusztult Akalacs nevû faluval azonosíthatóak. A megelôzô régészeti feltárásra 2008. A nyugati falba beépített kövekbôl a magas hô hatására ásványi
recorded the exact location and extent of the site (M6 TO-018: Németh 2006, 140). The settlement remains can be associated with the village of Akalacs destroyed in the Middle Ages. The ruins of its church were still depicted on the First military survey (Németh 2006, 140; Fig. 1). The rescue excavations were conducted between April 2008 and April 2009, during which an area of 30 000 m2 was excavated at the southern part of the site endangered by the motorway construction. The unearthed medieval settlement section was multi-tiered, thus the excavations were carried out in three levels: 1. and 2. medieval levels, 3. Roman and medieval level. We could observe several metres of sanddrift between each layer, which was in continuous movement throughout the year while the excavations were underway. 1.2 The medieval church We excavated the village church on the highest part of the medieval settlement. As a result of the stone and brick exploitation during the 19th c. only its foundation trenches could be found; except for the northern side of the nave where the wall stood 90 cm high for a 4.5 m length. The remains of plastering could be found on the outer side of the 145 cm thick wall section. The 70 x 100 cm altar foundation was found at the inner arch of the sanctuary from which three brick layers remained. Nearer to the western side of the church, in the centre we found the foundation of the pillar supporting the gallery. A few carved stones were unearthed during the excavation of the interior of the building. While we excavated the foundation trench, we observed that some of the graves in the cemetery surrounding the church were disturbed when the church was built. However, we did not find any signs of a foundation or postholes belonging to an earlier or perhaps smaller church / wooden church. The foundation trenches delineated a 18 x 10 m, single-naved church with a horseshoe-shaped sanctuary (Fig. 2). Based on recent studies (Pálóczi-Horváth 1984) this ground-plan is characteristic of churches built in the 11th – 12th c. 1.3 Lime-kiln Almost ten metres from the church in a southeastern direction we excavated a totally intact quadratic lime-kiln (Fig. 2). Three sides of the 6 x 3 m kiln were cut almost two metres into the subsoil; its north-western and south-eastern

A két kemenceszájat felváltva tudták tüzelni. A fûtôcsatornák mérete teljesen megegyezik (225 cm hosszúak, szélességük 80 – 87 cm). A két fûtônyílás szélessége között mintegy öt cm eltérés van, a déli fûtônyílás a szélesebb (65 illetve 70 cm szélesek). A kemencétôl keletre, a fûtônyílások elôterében tártuk fel a nagyméretû téglalap alakú munkagödröt. Innen tisztították és fûtötték a kemence tüzelôcsatornáit. Kemencénk felsô, mintegy egy méter vastag humuszos betöltésébôl a 14 –15. századra keltezhetô kerámiaanyag került elô. Kemencénk a Müller Róbert által felállított tipológia g csoportjába (épített, tüzelôcsatornás kemencék) tartozik (Müller 1981, 62; 1974, 35). Ez a csoport Nyugat-Európából ke-

sides closed in an arch. The northern, southern and western clay walls of the kiln were fired to the hardness of bricks. Minerals had vitrified from the stones, which had been built into the western wall, due to high temperature. At the eastern side of the kiln two heating outlets were located to which the heating flues attached from the west. Two 150 cm long, 26 – 28 cm thick stone walls appeared at a 195 cm depth at both the northern and the southern wall. A wall fragment of similar thickness was observable in the area between the two heating flues. The stones to be burnt were piled up in a vaulted manner onto these three benches / walls. The two mouths of the kiln could be used for firing alternately. The size of the heating flues is identical (their lengths 225 cm, widths 80 – 87 cm). There is only about a five centimetre difference between the width of the two heating outlets; the southern outlet is wider (they are 65 and 70 cm wide, respectively). East of the kiln in the foreground of the heating outlets, we excavated a large rectangular workpit. This is from where the kiln’s firing channels were cleaned and fired. From the upper, almost one metre thick humic fill of the kiln 14th–15th c. pottery material was unearthed. Our kiln belongs to Group g (built kilns with heating flues) in the typology set up by Róbert Müller (Müller 1981, 62; 1974, 35). This group was introduced into Hungary from Western Europe and can be traced back to the Roman period (Müller 1981, 60). Gyula Nováki excavated a kiln belonging to the same group in the woods of Sopron–Szárhalom (Nováki 1962, 342 – 343). Medieval lime-kilns were usually built near the area of use. One or more lime-kilns were excavated next to the churches for example, at Sárospatak (Gömöri 1970), Pókaszepetk (Vándor 1981), Nyék (Altmann 1973) and Mohács – Csele (Fehér 1955). The kilns always appeared in a ten metre wide area surrounding the church. The analyses con-

rült hazánkba, és a római korra vezethetô vissza (Müller 1981, 60). Ugyanebbe a csoportba tartozó kemencét tárt fel Nováki Gyula a sopron – szárhalmi erdôben (Nováki 1962, 342 – 343). A középkori mészégetô kemencéket általában a mész felhasználási helyének közelében építették fel. Mészégetô kemencét / kemencéket tártak fel például a sárospataki (Gömöri 1970), pókaszepetki (Vándor 1981), nyéki (Altmann 1973), Mohács – Csele-i (Fehér 1955) templom mellett. A kemencék minden esetben a templom tízméteres körzetében jelentkeztek. A téglaégetô kemence (4. ábra) a temetôt keleti oldalról lezáró nagy agyagnyerô gödrök déli végén helyezkedett el. A kemence szélessége 320 cm, hossza 575 cm. A téglaégetô kemence betöltése humuszos, agyagos, tégladarabokkal kevert bolygatatlan réteg (Snr 1786) volt. A felsô humusszal
ducted on the samples from Paks also showed that the lime burnt here was used for the building of the church. 1.4 Brick-kiln We excavated the brick-kiln, 15 – 20 m from the church sanctuary in a north-eastern direction (north-east from the lime-kiln). The brick-kiln (Fig. 4) stood at the southern end of the large clay pits that close the cemetery from the east. The width of the kiln is 320 cm, its length 575 cm. The fill of the brick-kiln was a humic and argillaceous undisturbed layer mixed with brick fragments (stratigraphical unit – SU in the following – 1786). After the removal of the upper humic layer a rather thick layer with brick fragments followed. The four heating outlets were on the north-western side of the kiln from which the four heating flues commenced in a south-eastern direction. The heating flues tapered towards the outlets. The four heating flues are all ca. 290 cm in length with a few centimetres difference. The width and height of the four heating outlets are almost identical. Their width is between 55 – 60 cm, their height 60 – 65 cm. The fourth heating outlet is the thinnest, only

A fûtôcsatornák a fûtônyílások felé szûkültek. A négy fûtôcsatorna hossza néhány centiméteres eltéréssel 290 cm körül mozog. A négy fûtônyílás szélessége és magassága csaknem azonos. 55 – 60 cm között váltakozik a szélesség, a magasság 60 – 65 cm. A negyedik fûtônyílás a legkeskenyebb, mindössze 56 cm. A fûtônyílások csúcsíves kialakításúak, belsô oldalukon simítás nyomai látszódtak. Hossza megegyezett a téglaégetô hosszával. A templom falából és a kemencébôl in situ megmaradt téglák összehasonlító vizsgálata is pozitív eredményt hozott (ld. 2. rész, Oláh István tanulmánya).
56 cm wide. The heating outlets are pointed, their interior sides show signs of smoothing. The eastern, western and southern sides of the kiln were clay walls burnt to a stone-hard consistency. We observed a layer a few centimetres higher in the section between the heating flues, which was burnt to a hard state. This hard elevation a few centimetres high may have fulfilled the role of a bench. At the south-eastern and south-western sides of the kiln, on the burnt, hard layer between the second (SU 1788) and third (SU 1787) heating outlets from the south-west, we found bricks not used for the construction of the church (not as waste matter) in situ in several rows placed one on top of the other. The bricks to be fired were alternately placed, first longitudinally and then perpendicularly, with their thin sides on top of each other, leaving the required width to enable the stream of warm air. We excavated the workpit in front of the kiln’s heating outlets. Its length was equal to the length of the brick-kiln. The bricks prepared for firing were placed with their thin sides onto the benches (their width is 50 cm, their length 320 cm) between the heating flues; while above the heating flues they were layered as vaults so as to leave enough space for the fuel. The conducted analyses have shown that the clay used for brick fabrication originated from the huge clay pit complex north-east of the brick-kiln. The comparative analyses of the bricks found in situ originating from the church and kiln walls yielded positive results as well (cf. part 2: István Oláh’s study). We found further bricks in some pits (four such pits with bricks were unearthed in all) excavated in the area of the cemetery, which had been fired in the brick-kiln. One of these pits (1432 / 1247), which was beehive-shaped and medium-sized, yielded 56 whole and several halfbricks, and there were some unfired pieces as well. In another similar sized pit (1276 / 1320) we found a decorated piece. Unfortunately, we know of only a few brick-kilns from the Middle Ages as yet. The closest parallel to our brick-kiln is the one excavated first by Gyula Rosner, then by Zsuzsa Miklós under authenticating excavations at the site of Dombóvár – Szigeterdô. That kiln also had four heating outlets and heating flues. Similarly to the brick-kiln at Paks, the heating outlets of this kiln were also pointed (Miklós 1999, 156). The bricks of the kiln built here were used for the construction of the 13th c. house tower built of brick. Another brickkiln was excavated by Ilona Valter at Ôriszentpéter. They found bricks left in situ inside the kiln, which had remained there after the disassembling

K.Ö.SZ. Évkönyv / F.S.C.H. Yearbook – 2008 ben Miklós Zsuzsa által Dombóvár, Szigeterdô lelôhelyen feltárt téglaégetô kemence áll. A kemence szintén négy fûtônyílással, fûtôcsatornával rendelkezett. A kemencében in situ helyzetben hagyott téglákat találtak, amelyet a kemence szétbontása után hagytak bent (Valter 1987, 140). A kemence három fûtônyílásos, fûtôcsatornás volt. A kemence falát belevágták a domboldal agyagfalába (Valter 1987, 142).
of the kiln (Valter 1987, 140). The kiln had three heating outlets and heating flues. The wall of the kiln had been cut into the clay wall of the hillside (Valter 1987, 142). A kiln complex with three heating outlets and heating flues were found by László Gerevich at Dömös. In contrast with the kiln at ôriszentpéter, however, these were not cut into a clay wall but built from bricks (Gerevich 1983, 386). During the construction works of the embankment, László Szekeres excavated a rectangular (650 x 250 cm) brick-kiln divided into three sections by the two heating flues at the site of Zenta – Mákos in 1975 (Szekeres 1985, 32). This kiln was cut into the subsoil, but its surface was covered by a thin layer of mud. The bricks that were fired here were produced for the construction of the church of Bátka, lying a kilometre from the site (Szekeres 1985, 33). It can be said of brick-kilns as well that they were built not far from the site of construction. 1.5 The medieval settlement The proposed route of the motorway affected the north-south axis of the settlement; thus, only a small section of the village could be excavated. The one-time medieval village spread in all directions outside of the motorway route. During the excavation, we did not encounter any signs of modern disturbance or agricultural cultivation. The houses we excavated were situated relatively far from each other scattered around the area. In the direct environs of the church and cemetery we did not find any dwellings only storage pits and wells. The processing of the finds from the excavated buildings is still underway, so I will only briefly discuss the three most significant houses in the following. At the south-eastern section of the site a line of bricks were unearthed at the bottom of a pit (11 / 11), which formed a systematic line leading to the emergence of the two sides of a building. Unfortunately, only a few bricks remained in situ, yet these outlined the position of the walls. The bricks stood for a length of 3 m from the northwest and 2.5 m from a south-western direction, piled on top of each other in 2 – 3 rows. They survived in 4 – 5 rows at the north-eastern corner of the wall. We excavated a massive, thick and extensive section of rubble mixed with daub and plaster in a north-western and south–south-western direction. The location of the remaining walls and the rubble together delineated the former building (949 / 899). After the removal of the rubble no sign of a foundation trench or postholes indicating a supporting structure could be found. Dur-

A omladék bontása során nagy mennyiségben találtunk épületszegeket, vasalásokat, tapasztásdarabokat. A pince bontásakor elôkerült leletanyag kora a ház leletanyagával megegyezik. Közvetlenül mellette jelentkezett a ház kemencéje. A templomtól északra, a lelôhely felsô végénél nagyméretû ház (Snr 1098) jött elô a gépi humuszolás során.
ing the removal of the rubble we excavated a large amount of building nails, iron fittings and pieces of daub. During the removal of the humic layer on top of the second medieval strata, south-east of the above building, we unearthed a quadrangular cellar (SU 2166) with rounded corners, which was cut into the Roman layer. This cellar probably belonged to the above mentioned building. On the eastern side of the cellar we could detect the hard packed, heavily sloping downward leading passage which appeared with a 195 cm width. The passage was once probably covered by wooden planks / stairs, which is implied by the large amount of charred wood. A large posthole was found in the centre of the cellar, which served as a support for its vaulted ceiling. In the middle section of the room, we discovered the remains of a large oven. The date of the find material unearthed during the excavation of the cellar is identical with the dating of the finds from the house. At the north-western edge of the site, directly on the border of the excavation, the burnt ruins of a large building (90 / 90) similar to the above described house, were found in the second medieval layer. The rubble appeared 11 m long and almost 8 m wide. During its excavation, we found the charred remains of a large timber / principal beam at its northern section. The oven of the house was excavated directly next to it. A former hearth enclosed with bricks could be delineated in the south-east side of the building. After the removal of the burnt rubble we did not find any signs of a foundation trench, nor of a possible earlier period. The house spread over the borders of the excavation to the north, thus, the parameters of the former building could not be determined. A fired, well-elaborated clay horse’s head (child’s toy), pottery dated to the 15th c., and an iron knife were unearthed from the south-western section of the rubble. North of the church at the upper end of the site, a large house (SU 1098) was uncovered during the mechanical stripping of the topsoil. Similarly to the two houses described above, this house also burned down, its ruins appeared on a 5.5 x 7 m area. A large amount of 14th–15th c. pottery was found during the removal of the rubble, as well as the well preserved, palm-sized fragments of a chain mail, and knives. After the removal of the rubble the eastern, western and southern foundation trenches of the building were delineated. The lengths of the foundation trenches are almost identical, between 5 – 5.2 m; however, their widths vary. We found nine postholes in the western trench and four in the southern one. The postholes appeared at such a

depth in the eastern foundation trench that we could not excavate them due to the narrow space available. During the excavation of this trench a large amount of burnt daub pieces with impressions of the wattle were unearthed. The buildings belonging to the settlement can be dated to the 14th–16th c. based on the uncovered finds. The life of the one-time village of Akalacs was brought to an end by the advancement of the Turks in the 16th c. This is supported by the burnt ruins of the buildings, the finds datable to the 14th–16th c. and the coins uncovered at the site (the latest coins are a Ferdinand I coin and a Turkish akche). The more precise definition of the structure and dating of the medieval village (church, cemetery and settlement), the more detailed study of the finds and phenomena will be the task of our future research.

2.1 Bevezetés
2.1 Introduction
A Paks – Cseresznyés (M6 autópálya TO18 számú) régészeti lelôhelyrôl végeztük el a templom falának, illetve a mészégetô és a téglaégetô kemencék építôanyagainak kôzettani vizsgálatát. A vizsgálat kiterjedt mind a természetes eredetû építôanyagokra (kôzetek), mind pedig a mesterséges eredetû építôanyagokra (téglák, meszes tapasztások, üvegesedett salakszerû téglák). Két kiválasztott travertínó kôzetmintán stabilizotóp-geokémiai vizsgálatokat is végeztünk. Ebbe a 9 típuscsoportba soroltuk be a teljes leletanyagot. A leletanyag hozzávetôleges %-os térfogati megoszlását a mesterséges eredetû építôkövek és a természetes eredetû kôzetek között, valamint a 9 darab típuscsoport közötti megoszlást a 5. és 6. ábra mutatja be. A természetes kôzeteken belüli térfogat %-os megoszlást, valamint a mesterséges építôanyagok típusainak térfogat %-os megoszlását a 7. és 8. ábra mutatja be. Utóbbiakban külön-külön 100%-nak vettük a természetes kôzeteket, illetve a mesterséges
We conducted petrographic analyses of the building materials of the church walls and the lime and brick-kilns from the archaeological site of Paks – Cseresznyés (M6 Paks-Gyapa TO-018). The study extended over materials of both natural (rock types) and artificial (brick, lime plastering, vitrified slag-like brick) origin. The results of the interconnected analyses carried out under uniform conditions are presented in a single study. The total volume of the complete stone and brick material was so large (ca. 8 m3) that at first we typologised the stone and artificial building materials by examining them macroscopically. We took several samples from these sorted groups according to macroscopic analyses to verify their homogeneity. The thin sections for petrographic analysis were prepared from these samples, with a standard method for both the natural stone and artificial building materials. Eventually, we chose 18 samples for a detailed petrographic description, which represent the entire building material. Out of these 11 were artificial building materials, which could be classified into 6 different groups. These typological groups were designated according to their composition and production technology. We could discern 3 typological groups in the natural stone types: freshwater limestone (travertine), sandstone, and rhyolite type. We also carried out stable isotope geochemical analyses on two selected travertine rock samples. Altogether 6 typological groups of artificial building materials and 3 of natural stone building materials were designated. We classified the entire material according to these 9 typological groups. The approximate percent volume distribution of the finds between artificial building blocks and natural stone sources, and the distribution of the 9 typological groups are shown in Figures 5 and 6. The percent volume distribution within the natural stone material and that of the artificial building materials are demonstrated in Figures 7 and 8. In the latter, we regarded both the natural stones and the artificial building materials as 100 %, respectively, and examined the propor-

Jól látható, hogy a régészeti lelôhelyen a téglák gyakorisága nagyobb, mint a természetes kôzeteké, közel kétharmad-egyharmad az arány a mesterséges eredetû építôanyagok javára. Célunk természetes kôzet anyagú építôanyagok esetében a minták kôzettani meghatározása, tipizálása, és a nyersanyagok forrásának, illetve forrásterületének minél pontosabb meghatározása volt. A riolit típuscsoport esetében a forrást sikerült pontszerûen azonosítani (egy kôbányára

It is apparent that bricks are more frequent than natural stones at the archaeological site, in a proportion of approximately two thirds to one third to the advantage of artificial building materials. Our aim was the petrological definition and classification of the natural stone building materials and the most accurate description of the raw materials and their occurrences and provenances. In the case of the rhyolite type group, the exact point of origin could be defined (a stone quarry) while regarding the sandstone and the freshwater limestone a smaller region could be

Minden esetben törekedtünk a kôzetek hozzávetôleges korának (a geológiai idôskálán) meghatározására, illetve a magyarországi kôzetformációk közé való besorolására. Itt is törekedtünk összehasonlító vizsgálatok elvégzésére. Ennek érdekében a régészeti lelôhelyen 11 mintavételi pontról begyûjtött 16 darab mintával vetettük össze a templom falából illetve a téglaégetô kemencébôl gyûjtött, fönt leírt téglatípusokat. A mintáknak egyedi mintaazonosító jelet adtunk.
determined as the source area. We attempted to determine the approximate age (along the geological timescale) of the rocks in all cases, and to fit them into the Hungarian classification system of rock formations. In order to identify the exact source area and to conduct comparative analyses, we collected rock samples for study from known Hungarian travertine sources (14 comparative thin sections were prepared) and rhyolite from the stone quarry at Sárszentmiklós (7 comparative thin sections were prepared). With regards to the artificial raw materials (bricks, lime plastering, vitrified slag-like bricks) we wanted to clarify the production technologies in question and the processes, which led to the creation of deficient bricks. An important question also arises, that is whether the raw material used for the preparation of the plastic material of bricks and the tempering material was local or transported from more remote locations. We aimed to carry out comparative studies in this case as well. To be able to do this we compared the 16 samples taken from 11 sampling locations at the archaeological site with the above described brick types taken from the church wall and the brick-kiln as well as from the lime-kiln. These samples were taken partly from the subsoil, or from the clayey layers beneath the subsoil, and partly from the sides and base of the ash pits. We fired the collected clayey samples under oxidised circumstances at 750 º C, then prepared thin sections from them and examined them with a polarization microscope, as in the case of the bricks. The analysis involved macroscopic and stereomicroscopic definition and classification of the raw material samples, followed by the preparation of thin sections and their study under a polarization stereomicroscope with a rotatable stage using both transmitted and reflected light. Stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses were carried out on two samples of freshwater limestone (travertine) at the Institute for Geochemical Research of the Hungarian Academy of Science. Detailed tables and written summaries with microscopic photos were prepared consisting of the results of the petrographic analysis for the archives. The present study includes the summarizing table containing the archaeological viewpoints (Fig. 9). A detailed table containing the petrographic characteristics is only available electronically due to its large size. Each sample was given a unique sample identifier as they have not been inventoried yet.

2.2.1 Study of natural rocks
PA_TO18_T01 Vörösessárga édesvízi mészkô (travertínó) Friss törési felületen vörösessárga-barnássárga (téglához hasonló színû), közepesen kemény, szabad szemmel is jól láthatóan porózus kôzet. A törési felület egyenetlen, kissé földes jellegû. A mállásnak kitett felületen a kôzet vöröses színárnyalata eltûnik, sárgásszürke felületet látunk. A törési felületen apró feketésbarna foltocskák (limonit) láthatóak. Szabad szemmel is felismerhetôek a halványzöld, szögletes, jellemzôen 5 mmnél kisebb méretû intraklasztok. A szabad szemmel is jól kivehetô, halványzöld, szögletes klasztok mikroszkópban vizsgálva közel homogén, szürke (a kôzet mátrixánál „tisztább”) mikritnek bizonyulnak. Néhány pátitos, félig begyógyult repedés tagolja ôket. Nagyobb nagyítással vizsgálva, ovális vagy elliptikus alakú, 100 mm-nél kisebb, világosabb foltocskák láthatóak bennük. E típuson kívül azonban több, eltérô megjelenésû intraklaszt típus is látható a kôzetben. Egyik típusuk a mátrixnál jóval világosabb, homogén belsô struktúráktól mentes áttetszô mikropátitból áll. Egy másik típus alapanyagát valamivel nagyobb szemcseméretû világos, tiszta pátit alkotja. Ebben a klaszttípusban a befogadó kôzetnél jelentôsen nagyobb mennyiségben (kb 6 – 8 %) találunk apró extrabazinális ásványokat, köztük a csak ebben a klasztban elôforduló biotitot.
PA_TO18_T01 Reddish brown lacustrine limestone or travertine Reddish brown – brownish yellow rock type on newly broken surface (similar to the colour of bricks), of medium hardness, its porosity is easily visible macroscopically. The freshly-fractured surface is uneven, slightly rugged and dusty. The size of the pores is usually 1 – 5 mm, their amount is less than 5 % of the rock’s volume. On the surface submitted to weathering the stone loses its reddish hue and instead a yellowish grey surface appears. Small dark brown flecks (limonite) can be observed on the fractured surface. The light-green, rectangular intraclasts, usually smaller than 5 mm, can be seen macroscopically. Sedimentary structures and fossils are not visible macroscopically. The microscopic examination shows that the texture of the rock is matrix supported. The matrix is inhomogeneous. It consists of brownish micrite and grey, speckled microspar. At times very fine wavy microlaminated fabric can be observed in the micrite appearing as brown and grey alternating bands. These laminated structures may have a botryoidal morphology, but they are only faintly discernible (by no means to be regarded as oncoids). These fenestral structures were undoubtedly formed by microbial processes, based on their morphology and size they may even be called stromatolites. The sparite cement is greyish brown, but consists of lighter and more translucent, tiny calcite crystals (microspar). It is often formed in semi-closed cracks, thin stripes or on the edges of intraclasts, indicating its secondary origin. The rock does not contain any identifiable fossils. The quantity of intraclasts is high (ca. 25 %), however, this is not visible macroscopically as the appearance of intraclasts resembles the matrix when examined unaided. It is characteristic of all clasts that the faint laminated structures surround them as an encrustration. The lightgreen, rectangular clasts well discernible macroscopically, which appear as almost homogeneous, grey („cleaner” than the matrix of the rock) micrite when examined under a microscope by transmitted light. A few cracks partially filled by sparite divide these types of clasts. Under higher magnification, oval or elliptic, lighter coloured flecks smaller than 0.1 mm can be observed inside them. However, several other, varying intraclast types can be found in the rock apart from this one. A common trait in all of them (except one, which is somewhat rounded) is their rectangular shape and their size between 1– 5 mm. They more or less resemble the appearance of the matrix thus, they cannot be observed macroscopically or only with difficulty. One of its types is comprised of a translucent microspar much lighter than the matrix, and free of homogeneous inner structures. The matrix of another type consists of somewhat larger,

Fontos a másodlagos eredetû limonit.
PA_TO18_T02 Vörösessárga édesvízi mészkô (travertínó) A kôzet erôsen hasonlít a PA_TO18_T01 jelû mintához. A struktúrát e kôzetben is mikrobiális tevékenység hozta létre. A cement hullámos felületû vékonyabb-vastagabb sávokat alkot a mikrites mátrixban. A cementet alkotó pátit mérete a sávok közepe felé fokozatosan nô, és a szélesebb sávok közepén gyakran elnyújtott üreget láthatunk. Ennek peremeit már nagyméretû, jól fejlett romboéderes pátitkristályok övezik. Markáns különbség, hogy a T01-es mintával ellentétben itt intraklasztoknak nyomát sem találjuk. Továbbá valamivel kevesebb, és egyértelmûen kisebb mé-
light coloured, clear spar. In this clast type we find tiny extrabasinal minerals in a considerably larger quantity (ca. 6 – 8 %) than in the host rock, including biotite, which only appears in this clast. Finally, the last clast type is slightly rounded, comprised of brownish-grey micrite, which is darker than the host matrix. Secondary limonite saturates it more than the host matrix, therefore macroscopically it appears as a brown coloured clast. Extraclasts were not observed in the sample. The quantity of extrabasinal minerals is not too high (ca. 12 %), but the rectangular or very slightly rounded monocrystalline quartz crystals of an average 0.1 mm size are striking. Only a few, even smaller muscovite fibres can be identified apart from the aforementioned ones. Some tiny, strongly weathered biotite crystals appear in one of the intraclast types. The limonite of secondary origin is important. It can be observed as tiny (max. 0.5 mm) grape-shaped or amorphous flecks appearing in thin streaks or in closed cracks. It is possible that manganese minerals also connect to it. This limonite causes the dark brown specks of the rock observable macroscopically.
Conclusion: The rock is probably a late Pleistocene freshwater limestone or a travertine, which deposited in a shallow lacustrine and wave dominated environment probably relatively close to the locality of the spring (Fig. 10). PA_TO18_T02 Reddish yellow lacustrine limestone or travertine The rock highly resembles Sample PA_TO18_T01. This rock variety with slightly differing facies development has definitely similar origin to the previous example and they both come from the same site therefore, in the following we will discuss it by emphasizing its differences from the previous group, and will not repeat the similarities again. The colour of the rock is practically identical to Sample T01: reddish yellow–brownish yellow and both its hardness and the characteristics of its fracture are similar. However, fewer pores are visible macroscopically than in the previous sample, and their shapes are elongated. The main differences are caused by the fine (1 mm or less) wavy laminations in Sample T02, which are easily visible macroscopically. This is why the rock seems somewhat more compact and it has a smaller volume of porosity compared with Sample T01. The laminae are very thin, wavy, greenish grey bands observable in the brown base material. The blackish brown flecks can also be found here as in Sample T01, however, clasts cannot be seen. It is well discernible under a microscope that the lamination is caused by the occurrence of bands of a brown micrite matrix and grey microspar-spar cement. This structure was also formed through microbial processes as in the other sample. The cement forms bands of various thicknesses with a wavy surface in the micrite matrix. The size of the spar forming the cement gradually increases towards the middle of the bands while in

K.Ö.SZ. Évkönyv / F.S.C.H. Yearbook – 2008 the middle of the wider bands we can frequently find elongated cavities. The edges of the rock are bordered by large, well-developed rhombohedral spar crystals. A significant difference, contrary to Sample T01, is that there are no traces of intraclasts here. Furthermore, somewhat fewer and obviously smaller sized extrabasinal minerals can be found in the rock. From the latter group almost only monocrystalline quartz is present and apart from this only two or three muscovite splinters appear. Secondary limonite grains appear in this sample as well, usually arranged as linear agglomerated bands. The agglomerates are frequently dendrite-shaped thus, the presence of Mn-oxide minerals is also probable apart from limonite. 10. ábra. A PA_TO18_T01 jelû minta szöveti képe. A kép bal alsó, valamint jobb felsô sarkában jellegzetes intraklaszt-típusok láthatóak, jobb alsó sarkában pedig egy pátitos cementtel kitöltött repedés (1N) Figure 10. The matrix of sample PA_TO18_T01. In the lower left and upper right corner of the picture characteristic intraclasts can be observed, in the lower right corner there is a crack filled with sparitic cement (1 N) retû extrabazinális ásványt fedezhetünk fel kôzetben. Utóbbiak közül szinte csak monokristályos kvarcot láthatunk, ezen kívül mindössze két-három muszkovitfoszlány jelenik meg. A másodlagos limonitszemcsék itt is felfedezhetôk, általában ezek is vonalasan elrendezôdô agglomerátumokként jelennek meg. Az agglomerátumok gyakran dendrit alakúak, ezért valószínû a Mn-ásványok jelenléte a limonit mellett.
A mállásnak kitett felületen a kôzet zöldes színárnyalata eltûnik, sárgásszürke felületet látunk.
Conclusion: The formations and provenance of this sample is similar to that of T01. Thus, it is also a Pleistocene freshwater limestone or a travertine although this sample formed further from the spring, in a steady shallow lacustrine (Fig. 11). PA_TO18_T07 lacustrine limestone or travertine It is a greenish grey rock type on a newly broken surface of medium hardness. It appears compact macroscopically (pores are not visible). The fractured surface is uneven, but is not rugged or dusty. The pores are only perceptible by microscope, they are under 1 mm in size, usually between 0.2 – 0.6 mm, and occupy ca. 5 % of the rock volume. On the surface exposed to weathering the greenish hue of the rock disappears and we see a yellowish grey surface. The rock appears homogeneous when examined macroscopically, fossils are not detectable. When examined by microscope it can be observed that the rock has a matrix dominated fabric. The matrix is composed of inhomogeneous, brown micrite and brownish grey, speckled microspar. In contrast to Samples PA_TO18_T01 and T02, the traces of microlaminae cannot be found (only a slightly visible striped structure in the micrite), however, a significant quantity (ca. 8 %) of oncoids are discernible. Their size is typically between 0.2 – 0.3 mm, and their distribution in the rock is inhomogeneous. They are more frequent in some areas while they may be absent in others. It is characteristic of these oncoids that their inner sections are of micrite while their exterior is composed of microspar. Occasionally, although not characteristically, extrabasinal minerals (monocrystalline quartz) can be observed in their cores. The shape of the oncoids is more or less elongated and arranged into bands parallel to the pores. The cement discernible in small quantities (a ratio of under 5 %) is greyish brown, but is lighter and more translucent, consisting of tiny calcite crystals (microspar). This rough inner structure is characteristic of biogenically (through bacterial activity) induced oncoid precipitation (on the other hand, the totally homogeneous oncoids are probably chemically precipitated). The shape and distribution of the tiny pores, few tenths of millimetres in size, are even better indicators of this slight orientation. The elon-

Tanulmányok / Essays gated shape and the striped orientation of the pores are characteristic. The sometimes visible elongation on the oncoids runs parallel to the darker and lighter bands of the micritic matrix. Thus, the three characteristics together give a slight orientation to the stone, which are only observable through a microscope. The stone does not contain fossils. No intraclasts or extraclasts in this sample were found. The quantity of extrabasinal minerals is insignificant (under 1%). Their majority is rectangular in shape or mildly rounded with tiny (smaller than 0.1 mm) monocrystalline quartz crystals. Apart from these very few, even smaller muscovite fibres and biotite fragments are discernible. 11. ábra. A PA_TO18_T02 jelû minta szöveti képe. Jól látszik a barna mikrites mátrix és a szürke mikropátitos cement mikrolaminációja, valamint az irányított elrendezôdésû, vékony elnyújtott pórusok, peremükön opakásványokkal (1N) Figure 11. The matrix of sample PA_TO18_T02. The brown, micritic matrix and the microlaminae of grey microspar cement are well visible, just as the oriented, thin elongated pores with opaque minerals on their edges (1 N) ben (kb. 8 %) találhatunk onkoidokat. Ez a durva belsô struktúra a biogén úton (bakteriális közremûködéssel) kivált onkoidokra jellemzô (a teljesen homogén onkoidok esetében ezzel szemben a kémiai kiválás a valószínû).
Conclusion: This lacustrine limestone varies slightly from Samples PA_TO18_T01 and T02 in both its appearance and its texture. Despite this fact, it is possible that it also originates from the same geological site, as a great variability in appearance is usually typical of travertine rocks within a single location. There are examples of single sites yielding, within a radius of a few metres, both loose phytoclastic tufaceous types of limestone of very high porosity and well cemented, as well as non-porous and compact limestone types (Fig. 12). PA_TO18_T05 Calcareous sandstone It is a compact rock type with homogeneous appearance. This sample is a lime-cemented sandstone of greyish yellow colour (light grey at weathered surface) when observed macroscopically. The dominant grain size is ca. 0.25 mm. This rock type is well sorted and relatively well cemented. It is compact and relatively hard, but some quartz grains may crumble off the rock’s mass when rubbed, which indicates the relative weakness of the cement. A few muscovite sheets sparkle occasionally when observing the samples macroscopically. Depositional structures, lamination or orientation is not discernible in the sample. Under microscopic examination the rock can be identified as fine-grained quartzarenite. There is no matrix, the space between the grains is filled by micrite and microspar – rarely sparry – cement. The quantity of this calcite cement is significant ca. 45 % therefore, the rock actually forms a transition from calcareous sandstones to sandy limestones. The grains are either not in contact at all due to the large amount of calcareous cement, or only at a few points each. A thin micritic carbonate rim can be seen coating the grains in all cases while towards the centre of the grains it transforms into microspar. At some places it developed into spar crystals (calcite). In small quantities we can see totally crystalline, rounded calcite grains as well, which are also surrounded by a micritic rim. This indicates that the cementation process can be divided into at least two temporally distinguishable phases, and between the two cementation events the loose sandy deposit – which is not, or barely contained matrix – underwent a

Mikroszkópos vizsgálat során a kôzet aprószemcsés kvarcarenitnek bizonyul.
Ásványok: Kôzetalkotó ásványok: Kvarc: Uralkodóan monokristályos kvarc, a polikristályos szemcsék aránya viszonylag kicsi (kb. 8 %).
12. ábra. A PA_TO18_T07 jelû minta szöveti képe. A két másik travertínó mintához hasonló szerkezetû a barna, mikrites mátrix, de a kerekded onkoidokban és az üregek peremein jelentôs mennyiségû mikropátit is megjelenik (1N) Figure 12. The matrix of sample PA_TO18_T07. The structure of brown micritic matrix is similar to the other two travertine samples, although in the rounded oncoids and the edges of pores a considerable amount of microspar appears (1N) re-depositioning process. Apart from the calcite, which is well-rounded due to its low hardness, the other grains are barely rounded and slightly weathered. This indicates fluvial origin of the grains and its partial redeposition must have taken place in a similar environment. This assumption is confirmed by the polymictic character of the rock forming grains. A small yet very diverse heavy mineral fraction can also be found in it.
Minerals Rock-forming minerals Quartz: predominantly monocrystalline quartz, the ratio of the polycrystalline grains is relatively small (ca. 8 %). The monocrystalline quartz grains are very slightly weathered, they are not rounded. Hypidiomorphic grains, which underwent magmatic resorption can be found among them. This suggests a volcanic (rhyolitic or dacitic) origin. Quartz grains of undulatory extinction and rarely more recrystallised, mosaic-like granules can be seen. These probably originate from a granitoid source rock, which underwent a low grade metamorphism. Both the Velence Hills and Mecsek Mountains can be regarded as source areas, but observing the general direction of sediment transport in the region the former is more possible. Accessory clastic minerals (classed by frequency): Magnetite: unweathered, yet slightly more rounded than the quartz, size between 50 – 200 mm, intense black colour with opaque granules.

Járulékos törmelékes ásványok (gyakorisági sorrendben): Magnetit: Üde, ám a kvarcnál valamivel jobban kerekített, 50 – 200 mm közötti méretû koromfekete, opak szemcsék. Epidot: Relatíve nagy számban (csiszolatonként kb. 10 – 12 szemcse) 50 – 150 mm közötti méretû, enyhén kerekített, zömök oszlopos termetû üde, kristályok. A hasadás jól látszik, egyes szemcséken enyhe zöldes pleokroizmus észrevehetô, a kioltási szög 20 – 40° közötti.
Epidote: appear in relatively large numbers (ca. 10 – 12 grains per thin sections) with sizes between 50 – 150 mm, slightly rounded, unweathered crystals with a short prismatic habit. The cleavage is well discernible, some granules show a mild greenish pleochroism, the extinction angle is between 20 – 40 %. Plagioclase: small number of rounded, but not weathered or altered crystals with polysynthetic twins. They may originate from both intrusive and extrusive rocks. Muscovite: some 20 – 100 mm long, thin fibres. Unweathered or mildly altered into sericite. Biotite: a few altered (chloritic and limonitic alteration) sheets between 50 – 100 mm. Microcline: a few rounded, unweathered crystal fragments with perthitic structure between 50 – 100 mm. They show granitoid origin. Monazite: three to four colourless or very pale greenish crystals per thin section appear with a very high refraction index, which resemble zircon, but with an inclined extinction (8 – 10 °). Wellrounded, but chemically not altered. Secondary minerals (alteration products) Chlorite: appears in a very small quantity as an alteration product of biotite. Sericite: appears in a negligible amount as an alteration product of muscovite. Limonite: alteration product of biotite appearing in small quantities. Hematite: fine-grained, secondary hematite in the matrix of some volcanic lithoclasts. Lithoclasts The amount of slightly or moderately rounded lithoclasts in the rock is very slight (<1 %), they are between 0.2 – 1 mm in size. Sedimentary lithoclast: homogeneous, light yellow clasts consisting of clay minerals. Volcanic lithoclast: between 0.2 – 0.6 mm, not or slightly rounded lithoclasts. Their texture is felsitic, containing very fine-grained quartz and feldspar, the matrix is saturated with hematite. Based on their appearance, they could originate from the Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation. The rocks of this formation can be found near the surface along the Middle Danube Valley and the right banks of the Danube while near Sárszentmiklós they also appear on the surface. Conclusion: Very young (Pliocene, Pleistocene or even as recent as Holocene) sandstone cemented by carbonate and thus, it has a relatively low hardness. Among the older sandstone forma-

Megjelenésük alapján a Gyulakeszi Riolittufa Formációból származhatnak. E formáció kôzetei a Közép-Duna Völgy mentén a felszínhez igen közel találhatóak, és a Duna jobb partján, Sárszentmiklós közelében a felszínre is bukkannak. A régészeti lelôhely közelében a talaj is nagy mennyiségben tartalmaz hasonló eredetû mészkonkréciókat, ami szintén alátámasztja ezt a képzôdési módot (Dr. Horváth Zoltán szóbeli közlése) (13. ábra). PA_TO18_T06 Meszes homokkô A kôzet erôsen hasonlít a PA_TO18_T05 jelû mintához. A minta szabad szemmel sárgásszürke (mállásnak kitett felületén szürkéssárga) színû tömött, homogén megjelenésû, mészcementált homokkô. A cement kizárólag jól fejlett, nagyméretû, pátitos kalcitkristályokból áll, amelyek mérete összevethetô a bennük lévô kvarckristályok méretével, mégis azokat közrefogva egységes cementállományt alkotnak. Mátrixnak itt sem látjuk nyomát. A cement mennyisége a szemcsékhez viszonyítva itt is jelentôs, a T05-ös mintához hasonló, ezért a

A kép alsó részén átalakult, limonitoshematitos vulkanogén litoklaszt, a kép fölsô részén kloritosodott biotit látható. Jellegzetesek a kerekített kalcitszemcsék (1N) Figure 13. The matrix of sample PA_TO18_T05a. A micritic carbonate rim is well visible, which towards the centre of the grains transforms into microspar. In the lower part of the picture transformed limonitic-hematitic volcanic lithoclast, in the upper part of the picture chlorite altered biotite can be observed. The rounded calcite grains are characteristic (1N)
tions only some of the facies of the Hárshegy Sandstone Formation are known, which show carbonate cementations, however, the sample does not resemble any of these. This calcitic cementation process is typical near the surface, in the upwelling Ca-rich groundwater zones, induced by calcite concretions from hydrocarbonate solutions. This origin is confirmed by the total lack of matrix. Presumably this cementation process took place in shallow level underground environment during changes in groundwater level. The unconsolidated immature fluvial sand, which initially did not contain any matrix was effected by this cementation process (Fig. 9). Near the archaeological site the soil contains large amounts of similar calcareous concretions, which also supports this mode of formation (Dr. Zoltán Horváth personal communication) (Fig. 12). PA_TO18_T06 Calcareous sandstone The rock strongly resembles Sample PA_TO18_T05. The source and the origin of this rock type is certainly similar to that of the previous sample. Therefore, in the following we will discuss this sample by emphasizing its differences from the previous sample and will not repeat the similarities again. Macroscopically the sample is yellowish grey (on weathered surface greyish yellow) ,compact, homoge-

Igen jellegzetes a mindkét mintában megtalálható epidot-monacit-magnetit ásványasszociáció.
PA_ TO18_T08 Meszes homokkô A minta mind szabad szemmel, mind mikroszkóppal vizsgálva tulajdonságaiban gyakorlatilag teljes mértékben megegyezik a T05-ös mintával, ezért részletes leírásától eltekintünk. Kôzettani-ásványtani tulajdonságait lásd a 7.
Következtetés: A PA_TO18_T05-ös mintával megegyezô, azonos helyrôl származó kôzetminta.
neous, well cemented sandstone. The grain size is usually ca. 0.2 mm and the rock is well sorted. The average grain size is only slightly smaller than in the case of Sample T05. This rock is also relatively well cemented, hard, but some quartz grains crumble off the rock mass when rubbed, indicating the relative softness of the cement. Depositional structure, lamination or orientation is not discernible in this sample. When examined under a microscope we see calcite cement in this example as well, but its type differs from that of Sample T05. The cement consists of well-developed, large calcite crystals with sparite, the size of which can be compared to the size of the quartz crystals within them, nevertheless, they compose a uniform cement body surrounding the latter. There is no sign of matrix in this case either. The amount of cement is also significant compared to the grains similar to Sample T05 thus, the grains are either in contact at a few points each or not in contact at all and “float” in the calcitic cement. Regarding their rock-forming minerals Samples T05 and T06 can be regarded as identical: the monocrystalline and polycrystalline quartz ratios and their appearance are almost similar. The only difference is that in Sample T06 the average size of the quartz crystals is slightly smaller, ca. 0.2 mm. The accessory clastic mineral population is also very similar. The epidote-monacite-magnetite mineral association is very characteristic and found in both samples. The only difference is that in Sample T06 the biotite and muscovite fibres and sheets appear in a slightly greater number and are larger in size (reaching a length of 0.4 mm), a few tiny staurolite crystals also appear.
Conclusion: Despite the few dissimilarities it is clear to see that the rock originates from the same location as Sample T05 and comes from the same geological site (that is, from a geological viewpoint, we are dealing with very young calcareous sandstones of partial diagenesis). The main difference between the two samples can be seen in the cement. Sample T06 has large calcite crystals and its cement filled with sparite indicates that more time was available for the crystallisation process from the hydrocarbonaceous solution of groundwater so it is underwent a slow crystallisation. There was no redeposition during the crystallisation process thus, the crystallisation of the cement could be carried through. The site of formation of both samples could, nevertheless, be a few metres or even a few dozen metres from one another (Fig. 14). PA_ TO18_T08 Calcareous sandstone The results of the examination of the sample, both macroscopically and under a microscope, yielded characteristics that almost completely match those of Sample T05 so we will not discuss it in detail. For its lithological and mineralogical description see Figure 7. The only variance is that macroscopically its colour is slightly more yellow than Sample T05, which is probably due to the

K.Ö.SZ. Évkönyv / F.S.C.H. Yearbook – 2008 Mikroszkópos vizsgálattal jól látható a kôzet másodlagos, felzites szövete. A hematitos-limonitos anyag a kôzet alapanyagát erôsen átitatja. Az ásványok elrendezôdése alapján a kôzet eredetileg irányított szövetû lehetett. Kôzetalkotó ásványok: Kvarc: Hipidiomorf, magmás rezorbciót mutató, 0,1 – 3 mm közötti méretû, fluid- és alapanyagzárványos kristályok. Az eredeti idiomorf alakot a magmás visszaoldódás torzította. Káliföldpát: Másodlagos eredetû kristályok, nagy részük plagioklász kálimetaszomatózisával jött létre. Egyes helyeken még látszik a felemésztett plagioklász reliktuma. Alakjuk idiomorf vagy hipidiomorf, méretük 0,1 – 4 mm közötti. Jelentôsebb mértékû szericitesedést, és peremeiken

cement consisting solely of micrite as it does not contain microspar.
Conclusion: The rock sample is identical to Sample PA_TO18_T05 and was also acquired from the same source. PA_TO18_T04 It is a hydrothermally altered rhyolite. When viewed macroscopically the rock type appears pink on a newly-broken surface, pinkish grey on surface exposed to weathering. It is compact, moderately hard rock with an uneven surface. The pink, fine-grained matrix contains amorphous brownish red limonite specks indicating the place of the former mafic minerals (totally transformed by hydrothermal processes). Tiny, grey, transparent, greasy-lustred quartz crystals and white feldspar crystals can also be identified macroscopically. The limonitic specks are slightly elongated and are arranged slightly oriented in the rock.
When examined by microscope, the secondary, felsitic texture of the rock is easily discernible. The former, probably mostly glassy matrix transformed into a mass of quartz and feldspar microcrystals. This process was surely not a simple weathering, as there is no sign of alteration into clay minerals. The former matrix contained tiny (between 1 – 20 mm) opaque minerals and formerly mafic minerals (most probably biotite), these, however, transformed into masses of hematite and limonite. The hematite-limonite mineral association strongly saturates the matrix of the rock. Based on the orientation of the former minerals the rock originally may have had an oriented (trachitic) texture. Rock-forming minerals Quartz: hypidiomorphic crystals indicating late magmatic resorption, between 0.1 – 3 mm in size, with significant amount of fluid and groundmass inclusions. The original idiomorphic form was distorted by the late magmatic or hydrothermal dissolution and resorption. K-feldspar: crystals of secondary origin, their majority were formed by a K-metasomatism process of former plagioclase crystals. In some grains the relics of the altered plagioclase can still be observed. Their shapes are idiomorphic or hypidiomorphic, their size ranges between 0.1– 4 mm. A significant sericitic alteration and occasionally carbonaceous transformation can be traced on their rims although clay mineral formation cannot be observed. Biotite: the material of the original rock-forming biotite crystals is totally transformed. The former-

ly existing biotite can only be recognised as pseudomorphs, but the shape of smaller crystals was also distorted. Their sizes vary along a continuous scale from 5 – 10 mm crystals of the base material to 1 – 2 mm microphenocrysts. It seems that the biotites first underwent opacitisation (some dark cores consisting of opaque minerals are still discernable), then the oxide minerals formed by opacitisation transformed into masses of hematite and limonite. Based on the reflection colour the presence of hematite is doubtless. It is possible that the limonite was formed from it due to further weathering.
Accessory minerals: Magnetite: idiomorphic altered crystals between 10 – 200 mm in size. Their material has totally transformed into hematite. Allanite: 1 – 2 pieces reaching a size of 0.25 mm, relatively unweathered, brown, pleochroic crystals with a high refraction index. Zircon: a few tiny, smaller than 50 mm idiomorphic unweathered crystals. Conclusion: The rhyolite (which has a primarily oriented texture suggests ignimbrite origin) was transformed through strong postmagmatic Kmetasomatic influences and alteration caused by hydrothermal solutions rich in SiO2 and Fe2O3 under oxidised conditions. The appearance of the rock is very characteristic and the presence of allanite is also very typical of the strongly transformed rhyolite exposed in the stone quarry near the village of Sárszentmiklós that belongs to the Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation. It is without doubt, that the rock sample came from this geological location to the archaeological site (Figs. 15 –18).

These seem to be plant remnants, however, their material had transformed. Their distribution in the brick is almost even and unoriented. Macroscopically a few tiny empty pores under 1 mm can also be detected. When examined by a microscope, the matrix of the sample is slightly inhomogeneous: light yellow specks form a mosaic within the light grey matrix. The minerals constructing the base material are so fine-grained that their identification is not possible by microscope, only an X-ray powder diffraction study could lead to results. Nev-

15. ábra. A PA_TO18_T04 jelû minta szöveti képe. A kép bal oldalán jól látható a hematittal átitatott felzites alapanyagban lévô nagyméretû, teljesen átalakult (hematitosodott és limonitosodott) egykori biotitkristály. A kép jobb oldalán látható kálimetaszomatózist szenvedett sajátalakú plagioklász világos magja még ôrzi az eredeti kémiai összetételt (1N) Figure 15. The matrix of sample PA_TO18_T04. In the left side of the picture a former large biotite is well visible in a felsitic matrix, which saturated with hematite. The biotite is completely transformed (hematitic and limonitic transformation). In the right side of the picture there is an idiomorphic plagioclase, which went through K-metasomatism process. The light centre of the plagioclase still has the original chemical composition (1N) ges. Elvétve egyegy biotit illetve cirkonkristály is megjelenik.
ertheless, the colour and optical qualities of the base material show that it contains a significant amount of carbonate (calcite). This is unusual in bricks. The presence of a larger quantity of carbonate is supported by the fact that the sample is fresh, and its dust-free fractured surface will fizz when treated with 10 % hydrochloric acid. The texture is serial, unoriented and very slightly inhomogeneous. There is no sign of subsequent artificial tempering, and the tiny, non-plastic components (mainly tiny quartz, and muscovite and a negligible amount of small heavy minerals) arrived in the material by natural means as the components of the clay. The ratio of the matrix is over 75 % while that of the nonplastic components only slightly exceeds 20%. The proportion of the pores is ca. 2 %, their sizes smaller than 0.5 mm with elongated shape (due to the small size of the pores they cannot be seen macroscopically, the brick appears compact). They are unfilled, but opaque minerals have crystallised around their rims. Among the non-plastic components, the subrounded monocrystalline quartz is the most frequent, which is probably of natural origin, essentially present within the clay used for brick manufacturing. Its size is under 70 mm. Apart from the latter, similarly small and subrounded muscovite can be found more frequently. It is interesting that some separated calcite grains also appear in the matrix, which are not cavity fillers formed due to the manufacturing process or secondarily. They are slightly rounded clasts. Occasionally biotite and zircon crystals also appear.

18. ábra. Összehasonltó riolitminta a Sárszentmiklósi kôbányából. A 15. ábrán látotthoz nagyon hasonló, hidrotermásan visszaoldódott (rezorbeálódott) kvarckristály a hematitos-felzites alapanyagban (1N) Figure 18. Comparative rhyolite sample from the quarry of Sárszentmiklós. It is similar to what was observed in Fig. 15, thus within a matrix saturated with hematite and felsite a quartz grain appears, which was exposed to hydrothermal dissolution (resorbed) (1N)
The black lines appearing to be plant remnants when viewed macroscopically proved to be a mass of iron and manganese opaque minerals with a dendritic appearance, which oriented in lines. These minerals crystallised along the walls of or around oblong-elongated empty pores, or follow thin channels. They definitely are of secondary origin. It is uncertain whether they filled the cavities of former plant remains, which were burnt away during firing, or later after the bricks were built into the walls, when they precipitated from the ferric-rich groundwater-solutions saturating the pores and cracks of the bricks. The firing of the brick can be regarded as normal, the primary plant remains were burnt out, but there is no sign of melting, nor of jointing, which refer to ideal firing temperatures (Fig. 19). PA_TO18_T09 Approximately regular rectangular shaped, pale brownish grey–greyish brown brick with a dusty fractured surface. Examined macroscopically the irregular shaped pores between 1– 5 mm are striking. Their distribution in the brick is homogeneous. Apart from these, 1– 3 mm large, irregular-shaped or linear black lines can be observed, which are probably charred plant remains. A few, seemingly rounded, dark grey, hard clay clasts between 2 – 6 mm in size are also conspicuous. In addition to this, tiny fine-grained mica plates can be observed macroscopically on the fractured surface, which indicate the muscovite content of the matrix. When examining the sample by microscope, we find that the matrix is inhomogeneous: the base material is heavily saturated by limonite and comprised of grey, yellow and brown bands and flecks. The matrix is constructed of such fine-grained minerals that they cannot

Ezek eloszlása a téglában homogén.
be identified more precisely by microscope, only an X-ray powder diffraction study could lead to results. Nevertheless, it can be seen that apart from the clay minerals in the initial raw material of the bricks, the clay also contained a significant amount of altered (limonitic alteration) opaque minerals, very fine-grained quartz and muscovite. The colour and optical characteristics of the base material suggest that it contains a smaller amount of carbonate (calcite). This is not frequent in the case of bricks, as the calcite might diffuse if the firing temperature is too high, creating cavities and cracks in the brick, furthermore, its thermal expansion coefficient also varies significantly from that of the clay minerals. The presence of carbonate is supported by the fact that the fresh, dustfree, fractured surface of the sample fizzes slightly when treated with 10 % hydrochloric acid (though not to such an extent as in the case of Sample PA_TO18_T03). The texture is hiatal, unoriented and inhomogeneous. The matrix contains a prominently large amount of fine-grained limonite. The texture and the heterogeneity of non-plastic constituents, as well as the bad sorting of them suggest artificial tempering. A part of the non-plastic constituents surely was tempering material artificially added to the brick’s plastic material. The tempering material, based on the non-plastic components, was most probably river sand, also clay pellets originating from dried clay and clay clasts from an unidentified source. The ratio of the matrix is 70 %, the non-plastic components is a little over than 25 %. The pores are ca. 4 %, their size is around 0.5 mm, occasionally reaching a size of 5 mm as well. Their shapes are rounded or amorphous. No carbonate or other filling material is observable in them. Among the plastic components the monocrystalline quartz is the most frequent, however, the appearance and size of the crystals is very varied. Quite tiny, between 5 – 30 mm, rounded quartz crystals can be seen in the matrix. Nevertheless, quite a large quantity of quartz crystals between 0.1–0.6 mm can also be found. The roundness of the latter quartz population varies between the barely rounded rectangular and wellrounded versions, but we can find volcanogenic crystals of straight extinction, and metamorphic or plutonic crystals with undulated extinction. Probably these crystals originate from an immature river sand and were added as artificial tempering to the brick’s material. The small number of large (100 – 600 mm), wellrounded polycrystalline quartz may originate from the same source. The tiny (max. 100 mm in length) muscovite sheets, which glimmer in the broken surface visible even macroscopically were altered considerably (sericitic alteration). Limonite appears in a significant quantity as individual grains between 20 –100 mm with amorphous shapes or as elongated granules, or sets of granules. Its presence in such a large quantity is unusual, its origin is uncertain. Individual calcite grains cannot be found in this type of brick. Occasionally, tiny rounded zircon crystals may also appear.

Tanulmányok / Essays A nem plasztikus összetevôk közül a monokristályos kvarc a leggyakoribb, azonban a kristályok megjelenése és mérete igen változatos. Az alapanyagban egészen apró, 5 – 30 mm közötti kerekített kvarckristályokat láthatunk. Sok azonban a 0,1– 0,6 mm közötti méretû kvarcszemcse is. A szabad szemmel is látható kis számú növénymaradvány szövete többé-kevésbé megmaradt, anyaguk szénült. Ugyanakkor létrejöhettek a szokásosnál nagyobb víztartalmú nyersanyag alkalmazása miatt is. Olvadásnak nyoma nincs, repedezettség nem észlelhetô (20. ábra). PA_TO18_T010 Szabályos téglalap alakú, friss törési felületén vörösesbarna („tipikus tégla”) színû, egyenetlen de nem poros törési felületû tégla. Szembeötlôk benne a 2 – 3 cm-es méretet is elérô, kerekded vagy „piskóta” alakú,
Among the plastic ingredients a small quantity (2 – 3 %) of grey clay clasts and pellets can be observed. The clay pellets have an average size of 0.25 mm, they are grey, oval-shaped homogeneous bodies. They probably came into being by the desiccation of raw clay, which was then mixed into the plastic material as tempering. Another possibility is that the dried clay was not homogenised sufficiently during mixing. The size of the grey, larger clay clasts can be several millimetres thus, visible macroscopically. Their inner structures are not homogeneous, they contain limonite specks and finegrained quartz similar to the matrix of the brick. It is questionable whether they are broken fragments of previously fired ceramics or brick, or dried clay fragments considered above. What can be asserted, however, is that these are artificial tempering materials as well. The fabric of the scarce amount of plant remains visible macroscopically was preserved more or less, their material became carbonised. The firing of the brick is not perfect. The colour of the carbonised plant remains and the brick suggest firing, which occurred in reduced circumstances. The pores possibly developed due to the partial diffusion of the calcite, which refers to the inadequate quality of the initial raw material and an unnecessarily high firing temperature. At the same time, they could have formed due to the use of raw material with a higher level of water than usual. There is no sign of melting, and cracking cannot be observed (Fig. 20). PA_TO18_T010 Brick with a regular rectangular shape, it is reddish brown (“typical brick”) on its freshly broken surface. It

The inhomogeneous matrix and hiatal fabric can be well observed. A szabad szemel is jó látható, cm-es méretet elérô fehér csomók anyaga gyakorlatilag tisztán kalcitból áll. A szemcseméret eloszlást mutató görbe tehát bimodális, kétmaximumos.
shows an uneven, but not dusty fractured surface. The round or “finger-shaped”, white, hard carbonate specks are conspicuous in the material reaching 2 – 3 cm in size. Fewer in number are the red clasts of 0.5 cm, which are probably ground brick fragments. Pores can be found as well, which are usually between 0.5 – 3 mm, showing irregular and slightly elongated shapes. Examined under a microscope, the matrix of the sample is relatively homogeneous compared to the previously studied samples. It does not have bands, specks or a mosaic structure. Its material is comprised of clay minerals, very fine-grained quartz, and a significant amount of limonite constituted of homogeneously distributed fine grains. The matrix also contains carbonate (calcite?) in a significant quantity. In this brick type we found white patches that are well visible macroscopically and reach a size of a centimetre. They are practically purely made of calcite. Their exact percentage cannot be judged, as their size and quantity varies widely from brick to brick. The texture is hiatal, unoriented and homogeneous. A large quantity of very fine-grained limonite appears in the base material. The hiatal texture, the heterogeneity of the non-plastic constituents and their poor sorting suggest artificial tempering. A part of the non-plastic components is most probably tempering material added to the plastic material of the brick. The applied tempering material was sand, broken brick and carbonate (calcite). The ratio of the matrix to the non-plastic constituents is two thirds / one third. The amount of pores is insignificant, under 1 %. Their size is usually ca. 0.5 mm, but sometimes they can reach 5 mm as well. Their shape is rounded or irregular. No carbonate or other filling material can be seen within them. Among the non-plastic constituents monocrystalline quartz is the most frequent, however, the habit and size of the crystals varies. Two different – but well-sorted on their own – quartz populations can be discerned. The grain size distribution curve is bimodal and shows two maxima. In the matrix the quartz crystals are quite small, 20 – 80 mm and slightly rounded. The other population is between 150 – 400 mm and contains quartz grains of diverse habit and roundness. We find both idiomorphic quartz crystals with straight extinction showing late magmatic resorption and of volcanogenic origin, and also quartz crystals of undulatory extinction with metamorphic origin. These crystals originate from immature river sand and most probably were added to the raw material as artificial tempering. The origins are probably the same for the scarce, yet large-sized (200 – 800 mm), well rounded polycrystalline quartz, which is sometimes strongly oriented thus, obviously arose from metamorphic rocks. Muscovite cannot be seen in this brick type, but a significant amount of biotite pseudomorphs can be found in the matrix. They are fully altered during firing and became limonite-rich very fine-grained alteration products. These former biotite crystals judging by their size and quantity were the constituents of the initial argilla-

21. ábra. A PA_TO18_T10 jelû téglaminta szöveti képe. Jól megfigyelhetô a viszonylag homogén alapanyag és a hiátuszos szövet. A nagy méretû kerekített, polikristályos és unduláló kioltású kvarckristályok valószínûleg folyóvízi homokból származnak, és soványításként kerültek a plasztikus masszába. A kép középsô részén jól kivehetô egy jellegzetes koncentrikus szerkezetû agyagos-karbonátos pellet (+N) Figure 21. The matrix of brick sample PA_TO18_T10. A relatively homogeneous matrix and hiatal fabric can be well observed. The large, rounded polycrystalline and undulating quartz grains are most probably derived from fluvial sand and became incorporated in the plastic raw material as temper. In the middle of the picture a characteristic clayey-calcareous pellet with concentric structure is well distinguishable (+N)
ceous raw material. It suggests that an immature, poor quality argillaceous sediment, contaminated with large quantity of terrigenous mineral fragments, was used as an initial raw material. Limonite appears in a significant amount, between 20 –100 mm in size, irregular in shape, or as elongated grains or sets of grains. Its presence in such a large amount is unusual and for this reason limonites may have several different origins. A part of these – the elongated grains showing signs of cleavage – were formed from biotite during firing. However, the initial crystal phase of limonite grains with isometric, rarely concentric inner structures or inhomogeneous grains is uncertain. Nevertheless, most probably these latter grains also altered into limonite during the firing process, which took place under oxidised circumstances. Separated calcite grains cannot be found in this brick type. Heavy minerals are also missing from the sample. Among the non-plastic constituents grey pellets with concentric inner structures can be found. The pellets are round bodies an average 0.3 mm in size, grey, ovalshaped, inhomogeneous, showing concentric stripes and zones. Their material is not pure clay, the concentric structure is formed by interchanging rings of clay minerals and carbonate. Actually there is no explanation for the formation of these extraordinary structures. The simple desiccation of the clayey raw material cannot produce such a clay-carbonate alternation resembling the shape and structure of an ooid. A small number of different types of rectangular brick fragments of varying texture and colour can be observed as tempering material. These are without doubt previously crushed fragments of bricks, which were added to the raw material. No plant remains can be found in this sample. The origins of the white carbonate specks, reaching centimetres in size, and conspicuous even when studied macroscopically interesting and uncertain. Their shape is not rectangular, more rounded at the rims and irregular, sometimes with “finger-shaped” appearance. At the borders of the carbonate specks, when examined by microscope, there is no any sign of discontinuity, cracks or jointing. They consist of pure calcite with extremely tiny pores. Their origins can be of three types, the only thing that is certain is that they were mixed into the clay as tempering material. For a more detailed discussion of this question see the argument below (Chapter 2.4). The firing of the brick is good, the porosity is smaller compared to the previously described samples, no sign of cracks can be observed. The large amount of limonite minerals is an obvious sign of oxidised circumstances during the firing process (Fig. 21). K.Ö.SZ. Évkönyv / F.S.C.H. Yearbook – 2008 tunk soványító anyagként. Ezek minden kétséget kizáróan korábban összetört téglák törmelékeként kerültek a nyersanyagba. Növénymaradványt e téglatípusban nem találunk. Érdekes és kérdéses a cm-es nagyságrendû, szabad szemmel is kirívó fehér karbonátfoltok eredete. Bôvebben lásd errôl a kérdésrôl a diszkussziót (2.4 fejezet). A tégla kiégetése jó, a porozitás a korábban leírt mintákhoz viszonyítva csekély, repedezettség nincs. A szabad szemel is jól látható, cm-es méretet elérô fehér csomók anyaga agyagásványokkal kissé szennyezett kalcitból áll. A szövet hiátuszos, nem irányított, homogén. A hiátuszos szövet, a nem plasztikus összetevôk heterogenitása és osztályozatlan méreteloszlásuk mesterséges soványításra utal. A nem plasztikus összetevôk egy része minden bizonnyal a tégla plasztikus anyagába juttatott soványítóanyag. A mátrix aránya a korábban leírt mintákhoz képest magas: 85 %, míg a nem plasztikus összetevôk aránya csak 12 %. A pórusok mennyisége 2 % körüli.
size is 0.5 cm) are conspicuous. Pores can also be seen, which are between 0.5 – 3 mm in size and rounded. Examined by a microscope, the matrix is inhomogeneous, its material is constituted of specks of greyish brown clay minerals, nearly isotropic, slightly devitrified glass and a very fine-grained limonite. There is no carbonate in the matrix of this sample. The appearance of the glassy material (artificially produced glass) suggests firing at a high temperature or at least that for a short while the temperature was around the melting point of the minerals constituting the matrix. The white clusters are well visible macroscopically reaching sizes of a centimetre consist of calcite slightly contaminated with clay minerals. The texture is hiatal, unoriented and homogeneous. The hiatal texture and the heterogeneity of the nonplastic constituents as well as their poor sorting suggest artificial tempering. A part of the non-plastic components surely was tempering material added to the brick’s plastic material. The ratio of the matrix is higher than in the previous samples: 85 % while the non-plastic constituents are only 12 %. The amount of pores is ca. 2 %. Their average size is ca. 0.4 mm, but may reach 1 mm as well. They are rounded or rarely irregular in shape. They are empty, no carbonate or other filling material can be observed. Among the non-plastic components the monocrystalline quartz is the most frequent, however, the size distribution of the crystals is bimodal. Two different populations – well-classified on their own – can be discerned. The first population appears in the matrix consisting of tiny, 15 to 80 mm quartz crystals slightly or not rounded at all. The other population consists of quartz grains of varied roundness and sizes, which varies between 200 – 300 mm. Contrary to the previous samples, these are all monocrystalline grains, but their roundness and habit is varied. These crystals originate from immature river sand and undoubtedly were added to the material of the brick as tempering. Muscovite cannot be observed in this brick type, however, pseudomorphs altered from biotite, between 5 – 50 mm, also appear in its matrix (although in a smaller quantity than in Sample PA_TO18_T10). This biotite was totally altered to very fine-grained limonite rich material during firing. Judging by their size and quantity, these former biotites were without doubt the constituents of the initial clayey raw material. It suggests that an argillaceous sediment of poor quality contaminated with significant amount of immature, terrigenous minerals was used as an initial raw material. This sample frequently contains 20 –100 mm sized, rounded, oval-shaped limonite grains (more frequent than the limonite-based pseudomorphs transformed from biotite). These are probably authigenous concretions in the subsoil. Concentric concretions made up of interchanging clay and limonite also appear among them and clay pellets similar to those in Sample PA_TO18_T10 can also be found among the non-plas-

Tanulmányok / Essays egyáltalán nem kerekített kvarckristályokat találunk. A másik populációt a 0,2 – 0,3 mm közötti méretû, változatos kerekítettségû kvarcszemcsék adják. PA_TO18_T012 Szabálytalan, „lepény” alakú sárgásfehér-szürkésfehér színû, a templomfalból származó kôdarab. Szürke, 1 cm alatti méretû, szögletes klasztszerû foltok is láthatóak benne. Anyaga uralkodóan kalcium-karbonát, amelybe mintáról-mintára változó mennyiségben és inhomogén eloszlásban, foltokbancsomókban-sávokban agyagos alapanyag keveredik. A szövet szeriális, nem irányított, igen erôsen inhomogén. A nem plasztikus összetevôk valószínûleg az agyagos komponensbôl származnak, osztályozottságuk jó, méretbeli hézagnak nincs jele. Mikroszkópban kitûnôen látszik az agyagos összetevô belekeveredése a karbonátos mátrixba. A mátrix aránya a korábban leírt mintákhoz képest a legmagasabb 91 %, míg a nem plasztikus összetevôk aránya mindössze 4 %. A mátrix túlnyomó többsége – szemben az összes többi mintával – kalcitból áll. E kalcit mikrites megjelenésû, nagyon finomszemcsés, barna színû, agyaggal szennyezett. A karbonátos mátrixba plasztikus agyagcsomók keveredtek, ezek színe szürkésbarna, ritkábban vörösesbarna. A pórusok

Separated calcite grains cannot be observed in this brick type. A few tiny rutile crystals appear as heavy minerals (Fig. 22). PA_TO18_T012 Irregular, flat-shaped, yellowish white–greyish white rock fragment derived from the church wall. Its fracture surface is dusty. Macroscopically it contains grey and brownish grey bands and specks occasionally arranging themselves into swirls showing signs of mixing in a plastic state. Grey, rectangular clast-like specks, smaller than 1 cm can also be found in the sample. Its material is mostly calcium carbonate, into which specks, clusters and bands of an argillaceous deposit mingle in varying quantities and inhomogeneous distribution according to each sample. The texture is serial, unoriented and very inhomogeneous. The non-plastic constituents probably originate from the clayey component, they are well sorted and there is no hiatus in their size distribution curve. The mingling of the clayey constituent into the carbonate matrix can well be observed by a microscope. The ratio of the matrix is the highest so far amongst all of the samples with 91 % while the ratio of non-plastic constituents is only 4 %. The majority of the matrix – contrary to all the other samples – is composed of calcite. This calcite is micritic in appearance, very finegrained, light brown and contaminated with clay. Plastic clay clusters mixed into the carbonate matrix, their colour is greyish brown rarely reddish brown. These argillaceous bands-vortices contain fine-grained quartz, muscovite and rarely biotite. The amount of pores is very high, ca. 7 %. Their average size is usually 0.3 mm, but may also reach 8 mm. Their shapes are irregular. They are empty, no carbonate or other filling material may be seen within them. Among the non-plastic constituents monocrystalline quartz is the most frequent, the size distribution of the crystals is continuous. Their size is small, even the

A nem plasztikus összetevôk közül a monokristályos kvarc a leggyakoribb, a kristályok méreteloszlása folytonos, méretük kicsi, a legnagyobb kristályok is 0,1 mm alattiak.
23. ábra. A PA_TO18_T012 jelû minta szöveti képe. Jól látható a sok apró kvarckristályt tartalmazó agyagos sávok és a homogén megjelenésû karbonátos mezôk keveredése. Az agyagból kvarckristályok hatoltak a karbonátba, ami annak kezdeti plaszticitására utal (1N) Figure 23. The matrix of brick sample PA_TO18_T012. The mixture of clayey bands with common tiny quartz grains and calcareous bands with homogeneous appearance can be well observed. From the clay quartz grains entered into the carbonate indicating that the carbonate was in a plastic state (1N)
largest crystals are under 0.1 mm. They probably derived from the clayey components. Muscovite can also be found and a slight amount of altered biotite and two or three very small rutile crystals appear as well. There are no individual calcite grains, but some carbonate clasts less than 10 mm appear at parts. According to its characteristics it is obvious that the sample is the mix of two materials while still in a plastic state, from which the carbonate component is predominant and the argillaceous component is the subordinate phase. The two components were not homogenised sufficiently (Fig. 23). PA_TO18_4/4 This grey sample without doubt shows the signs of melting. It consists of green and brown stripes and green glaze of glassy appearance on its exterior surface. It has a distorted rectangular shape with still a near 90º angle on one side while its other side is amorphous, similar to a piece of suddenly frozen lava. Its freshly broken or cut surface is black, here and there with a greenish hue. The surface is not dusty and it has a slightly vitreous lustre. Macroscopically we can see some yellowish brown and light green amorphous specks, which are a few millimetres in size. Pores can also be observed, these are max. 3 mm large and show regular rounded shape. When examined by a microscope we can see that the matrix has almost totally became vitrified, it is isotropic, although its colour seems inhomogeneous, greyish brown and black bands interchange. Greenish grey specks can sometimes also be found in this material. The crust of the sample is also formed by this greenish grey, totally vitrified material, which is the most vitrified segment. These suggest a banded melting process. Apart from the glass its material is composed of the alteration products of clay minerals, the size of which could not be identified by using an optical microscope, fine-grained quartz and probably secondary opaque minerals (magnetite?). The texture is hiatal, unoriented, inhomogeneous and banded. The size distribution of the quartz population is even, although some larger (larger than 0.5 mm) polycrystalline quartz crystals can also be found, which most probably were added to the raw material as tempering. This also suggests that the sample was intended to be a “usual” brick, but due to the recurrence of high temperature firing it became over-fired, melted and its material turned into a partially artificial glass. The matrix does not contain limonite, which refers to reduced firing conditions. The opaque minerals are probably secondary, as they only appear in larger quantity in this brick type. The probability is high of these being magnetite transformed from the earlier iron-containing phases, created due to high temperature under low oxygen fugacity conditions. The ratio of the matrix compared to the previous samples is quite low (51%) while that of porosity is rather high (17%). This could arise because the original matrix trans-

Tanulmányok / Essays alakú folt látható benne. Pórusokat is láthatunk, ezek maximális mérete 3 mm, alakjuk szabályos kerekded. A mátrix aránya a korábbi mintákhoz viszonyítva igen alacsony (51 %), míg a pórusoké igen magas (17 %). A pórusok mérete általában apró, 0,1 – 0,2 mm közötti, bár néhány 1 mm-t meghaladó is elôfordul. A néhány nagyobb méretû polikristályos kvarckristály alakja kerekített. Felbukkan a mintában néhány apró plagioklász kristály is.
24. ábra. A PA_TO18_4/4 jelû minta szöveti képe. A vörösesbarna területek az eredeti agyagásványok átalakulási termékeinek dúsulási csomói. A világos területek döntôen kôzetüvegbôl állnak, ezek keresztezett nikollal izotrópok. Jól látható a sok kerekded pórus is. A zöldesszürke árnyalatú klaszt a kép bal alsó részén megegyezik a minták peremének szabad szemmel is zöld színû, üveges anyagával (1N) Figure 24. The matrix of brick sample PA_TO18_4/4. The reddish brown areas represent alteration products of clay minerals where they were abounded. The light areas are mainly composed of glass, which are isotropic under crossed polarised light. Many rounded pores are also well visible. A clast with greenish-grey hue in the lower left part of the picture is identical to the green glassy material of the edge of the samples, which can be observed macroscopically (1N) formed and its volume shrunk in favour of the pores. The size of the pores is usually tiny, between 0.1–0.2 mm, although some exceed 1 mm as well. Their shapes are very regular, rounded and very similar to the pores observable in natural volcanic lavas (e.g. vesicular basalt, andesite). They originated from the release of H2O from the clay minerals, and if the sample contained carbonate prior to the partial melting also from the release of CO2 from the carbonates. They are empty and do not contain carbonates or other phases. Quartz predominates over the non-plastic constituents. Rims of the quartz crystals show the signs of resorption in some case, indicating that the temperature may also have approached the melting temperature of the quartz. The few larger polycrystalline quartz crystals are rounded. Some tiny plagioclase crystals appear in the sample. Muscovite or biotite cannot be found in this sample, if they existed in the initial raw material they fully altered due to the strong overfiring. The remnants of the original clay minerals are still visible as well, they are yellowish brown clusters with dark brown crusts that have rounded shapes with resorbed rims. Their material cannot be determined by optical methods, only an X-ray powder diffraction study could lead to results concerning the mineral phase transformations of the original clay minerals during the partial melting process of the sample (Fig. 24).

2.3 Stable isotope analyses
2.3.1 Elméleti háttér
2.3.1 Theoretical background
The stable isotope (d13C and d18O) value of freshwater limestone is influenced by several factors. Amongst these we must emphasize the roles of climate (evaporation, water temperature), the geological background, and the depositional environment (microfacies), as well as the origins of the dissolved carbonate and CO2. In many cases, the climate effects isotope composition subsidiary as it may influence the temperature of springs, the vegetation, the way of deposition, the supplies of rainfall and the extent of its seepage into the soil, as well as the process of limestone formation itself. As the climate effects the stable isotope composition of freshwater limestones of various ages to various degrees, the stable isotope values can frequently be used to deduce the climatic conditions of different eras, whilst also taking the sedimentological characteristics of deposits into consideration. The stable isotope composition is thus, in close connection with the genetics of freshwater limestones, but it may also reflect local influences characteristic of each area. The oxygen isotope composition is primarily determined by the temperature of concretion and the isotope composition of the water that deposits the carbonates. Thus, the role of the climate must be emphasised in the formation of the d18O values. Among the subsequent effects diagenesis has to be stressed, which may also modify isotopic composition. This means that the oxygen isotope values do not reflect, or only to a small extent, the local regional distribution of freshwater limestone. Thus, locating these by stable isotopic–geochemical means is possible primarily by the use of the d13C values and the sedimentary and microfacies studies of the limestone.

2.3.2 Description of stable isotopic measuring methods and its results
A mintavétel módja hatással lehet a stabil izotópos elemzések eredményeire. Édesvízi mészkövek esetén átlagos izotópos összetételt mérünk, amihez a minta tiszta részébôl viszonylag nagyobb mennyiséget homogenizálunk. The method of sampling can influence the results of stable isotope examinations. In the case of freshwater limestones an average isotope composition is measured by sampling a relatively large amount from the clean part of the rock sample. Then the sample is homogenised. The T01 and T07 samples chosen for study were submitted to stable carbon and oxygen isotope examinations at the stable isotope laboratory of the Institute for Geochemical Research, Hungarian Academy of Sciences with a Finnigan delta

Plus XP mass spectrometer applying the carrier gas method discussed by Spötl and Vennemann (2003). Firstly, CO2 gas is extracted from the travertine with phosphoric acid then the gas sample is led into the mass spectrometer. In this way the carbon and oxygen isotope ratios can be determined. Standard delta notation is used to report isotopic composition in per mil (‰) compared to the V-PDB (d13C and d18O) and V-SMOW (d18O) standards, where d = (Rsample / Rstandard-1) · 1000, where Rsample and Rstandard signify the isotope ratios (in this case, the ratios 13C / 12C and 18O / 16O) of the sample and the standard. The standard is internationally determined, which in the case of carbon is Pee Dee Belemnite (V-PDB), and in the case of oxygen is V-PDB and V-SMOW (“Standard Mean Ocean Water”), where the “V” prefix refers to the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency providing the standard values. During the measurements reproducibility was better than ±0.1 ‰ in the case of the d13C and d18O values of the carbonates. Results The duplicate measurements of the samples resulted in the following: In the case of T 01 d13C = -8.3 ‰ (V-PDB), d18 O = -9.19 ‰ (V-PDB) In the case of T 07 d13C = -9.1 ‰ (V-PDB), d18 O = -9.3 ‰ (V-PDB) 2.3.3 Interpretation The stable carbon and oxygen isotope composition of native freshwater limestone varies along a wide scale, but the freshwater limestone types of individual mountains (e.g. Buda and Gerecse) are more or less well discernible from one another, as well as from the tufaceous concretions of our karst mountains (e.g. Bükk, Mecsek) (Kele 2009). By comparing the results of the measurements conducted within the boundaries of the present study with the results of the stable isotope examinations on native freshwater limestones (Fig. 25, Kele 2009), it is well discernible that the carbon isotope values of both of the discussed samples are almost identical to the lowest value travertines of Gerecse. More importantly the results show similarity to the Holocene and recent low temperature karst water concretions of the Bükk and Mecsek calcareous tuffs (Fig. 25). As a whole, the d13C values of the examined samples are much more negative than the d13C values

A minták Budai-hegységi eredete egyértelmûen, míg Gerecse hegységi eredete nagy valószínûséggel kizárható. Ugyanezt a káli-
of the Pleistocene travertines from the limestone quarries already used by the Romans in the mountains of Buda and Gerecse (e.g. Dunaalmás, Budakalász). Meanwhile the oxygen isotope values of the studied samples are also similar to the composition of the recently formed karst tuffs, which suggests that they formed from low-temperature (nonthermal) water. All these infer that the samples originate from a tufaceous formation, but we cannot exclude that they were produced from a smaller, local lacustrine limestone occurrence close to the building site. The mountains of Buda can definitely be precluded as the origins of the samples while those of Gerecse are also very unlikely. 2.4 Discussion 2.4.1 The origins and use of natural building stones The natural stones built into the church wall belong to three different groups (see Fig. 9). Among these the freshwater limestone (travertine) occurs in the largest number, sandstone ce-

Geológiai beosztása alapján a kôzet a Gyulakeszi Riolittufa Formáció tagja (26. A d18 O értékek mindkét minta esetében jó egyezést mutat a hazai travertínók d18 O értékével, és erôsen eltértek a többi magyarországi mészkôtípus d18 O értékétôl. A mikrofácies vizsgálatok

mented by calcite can be found to a lesser extent while altered rhyolite is the rarest. Among these stone types the site of origin of the altered rhyolite could be localised exactly. The same type of rhyolite rock, which underwent K-metasomatism and hydrothermal alteration can be found in the stone quarry at the borders of the district of Sárszentmiklós (ca. 30 km northwest from the archaeological site), but it can be found in small patches on the surface or under the top soil of several sites around the district. The hydrothermal alteration of the rock is so characteristic that it can be stated with security that the rhyolite used for the building of the church originated from this site. According to its geological classification the stone is part of the Gyulakeszi Rhyolite Tuff Formation (Fig. 26). The identification of freshwater limestones (travertine) is more difficult. We know several sites in Hungary containing young travertine beds, mostly in the mountains of Buda and Gerecse. It is exceptionally hard to identify travertines because their appearance can be rather varied within a single site. We may find different variants situated within only a few metres from each other such as a porous tufaceous variant, which is rich in plant remains; non-porous, slightly laminated rock variations; and highly porous, hard, unlayered variations. Moreover, these types may also appear in all possible transitional forms. The comparative studies, however, led to the result that while the examined rocks are most probably travertines their appearance does not resemble that of the known rock types from known Hungarian sites (e.g. Tata, Süttô, Dunaalmás or the sites in the mountains of Buda). This is justified by stable isotope studies, which we conducted at the Institute

A mintáink mikrofáciesekben látható különbözôségét a forráskilépési helytôl lévô különbözô távolság okozhatta. A Magyarországon ismert homokkôtípusok közül a kalcittal-karbonáttal cementált változatok igen ritkák. A homokköveket az esetek többségében kova (mikrokristályos SiO2) cementálja, illetve ezek a homokkövek maradnak fenn a geológiai idôk alatt, mivel a karbonátos cement mechanikailag sem és kémiailag sem eléggé ellenálló. Az esetünkben számba vehetô homokkövek közül a Hárshegyi Homokkô Formáció

for Geochemical Research of the Hungarian Academy of Science led by Sándor Kele. We chose Samples PA_TO_18_T01 and PA_TO18_T07 as representative rock materials. The stable carbon and oxygen isotope studies brought interesting results. The d18 O values of both samples correspond well with the d18 O values of native travertines and strongly vary from the d18 O values of other Hungarian limestone types. The d18 C value, however, differs significantly from the carbon isotope values of known older (Pliocene, Pleistocene) travertines in Hungary while shows similarities to the d18 C values of calcareous tuffs that are currently being formed from cold-water springs in the Bükk and Mecsek mountains (see Fig. 25). This supports the observations that were made macroscopically and the valuations of the microfacies studies, namely that although our samples are freshwater limestone they are not from a well-known native quarry site already exploited by the Romans for building material, but they are derived from geologically younger rock formations. Based on the microfacies studies we can see that the stones in question formed in a shallow lake, in which one or more springs emitted water rich in CaCO3, or the springs may have situated on the banks of the lake. The variations in the samples in terms of microfacies may have been caused by that the rocks were formed from varying distances from the source of the spring. While the stable isotope studies show that very young, Pleistocene or Holocene freshwater limestones have to be examined. If we connect the archaeological site near Paks with Sárszentmiklós, where the geological occurrence of the rhyolites within the church wall situates, then along this north-west to south-east oriented line we find a rock belt appearing under the top soil that is classified among the Vértesszôlôs Travertine Formation of the Upper PleistoceneHolocene epoch. This rock formation can be found under the top soil near Sárszentmiklós as well. The rocks classified among these are usually soft tufaceous sediments, but we also know hard, well cemented variants. Our travertine samples probably derived from this geological formation and they were quarried from a small so-called “penknife” quarry near Sárszentmiklós becoming popular in the Middle Ages (Fig. 27). The third rock type, which can be found in the church wall is the sandstone cemented by calcite. Among the sandstone types known in Hungary the ones with calcite or carbonate cementation are quite rare. The majority of sandstones are cemented by silica (microcrystalline SiO2) and these are the sandstones that remain during the geological

A cement aránya magas. Logikus tehát a következtetés hogy a templom falának természetes eredetû kôzetei Sárszentmiklós község közelébôl, attól kissé délkeleten nyitott helyi, sekély „bicskabányából” származnak (29.
epochs. The reason for this is that the carbonate cementation is not resistant enough neither mechanically nor chemically. In our case we may consider the sandstones as belonging to a rare member of the Hárshegy Sandstone Formation, however, neither the appearance nor the mineral composition of our samples resembles that of these rock types. The microscopic studies show that our sandstone samples were formed by calcite cementation of a relatively immature fluvial sand deposit, which was not exposed to considerable transport. The ratio of the cement is high. The cemented fragments were most probably fluvial sand while the calcite, by which the sand was cemented, was without doubt a primary cement type. These types of young, quickly cemented sandstones are frequent in those areas where the upwelling groundwater is rich in CaCO3, which cements together the fluvial or aeolic sand in the upwelling zone. Our samples are therefore, “freshly cemented” sandstones from the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene epoch, which occur in the regions between the Danube and Tisza rivers and on the right bank of the Danube. Our samples contain such a large amount of calcite cement that they comprise a certain transition between the calcareous sandstones and the sandy limestones. This suggests that they may have settled in a shallow lacustrine environment nearby the deposit, of which the travertine samples originated. A glance at the geological maps reveals that south-east of Sárszentmiklós several of these sand beds of varying cementation can be found just below the top soil. They are classed among the rocks of the Marcal Sand Formation. This is mostly composed of fine and medi-

um-grained fluvial sand eventually undergone some aeolic redeposition on the surface, which is in line with our observations of our samples. This sand may have been cemented by spring water, which contained hydrocarbonate (Fig. 28). Consequently, it is logical to infer that the natural stones of the church wall originate from the surroundings of Sárszentmiklós district, from the shallow “penknife” quarry opened to its southeast (Fig. 29). This variability of travertine is probably quarried here, and the calcite cemented sandstones may also originate from the edge of this quarry area, from the region where the transition of the freshwater limestones into lime-cemented sandstones took place. The latter is not an ideal building material due to the relative weakness of the calcite cement. The same can be said for the hydrothermally altered rhyolite from the Sárszentmiklós stone quarry, which was probably transported to the building site when the builders ran out of freshwater limestone. Rhyolites are usually less strong, but effective insulating building material. The rhyolite variation from the Sárszentmiklós stone quarry is, however, chemically less resistant due to its metasomatic and hydrothermal alterations. Thus, it does not endure

A második téglatípust (9. ábra: TÉGLA2) a PA_TO18_T09 jelû minta reprezentálja leginkább. Feltûnô benne a szabad szemmel is jól látható sok apró pórus.
exposure to weather changes not to mention the wide variability in its mechanical hardness because of its considerable inhomogeneity. 2.4.2 Conclusions drawn from the study of artificial building material (bricks, fired calcareous plastering, and vitrified slag-like bricks) We directed the study of bricks and other artificial building materials to answer two main questions. Firstly, to see if the raw materials used for the bricks were from a local source or imported from a farther location. The hypothesis that only finished bricks were transported to the building site can certainly be ruled out because of the presence of the brick-kiln. The other question referred to the technology of the brick manufacture: what kinds of raw materials, tempering materials were used and how was the quality of the firing process. The studied samples were taken from both the church wall and the material of the brick-kiln and its surroundings. After setting up the typology of the bricks based on the microscopic examinations six brick and building material type groups could be discerned, which are each represented by a detailed description of a sample in the report. The most characteristic feature of the first, yellow brick type (BRICK1 in Fig. 9) is the rather high carbonate content of its matrix. The most characteristic example of this type is Sample PA_TO18_T03, which was collected from the church wall. The brick-kiln did not contain this type of brick. It is typical that there are no carbonate specks in it, instead a very fine-grained calcite is evenly distributed in the matrix. Such a high proportion of carbonate content is unusual in the case of bricks not to mention that the question also arises why the CO2 content did not diffuse from the calcite. Since the dark lines observable in the brick were originally plant remains and these did not become carbonised during firing, but their material was totally exchanged. This and the limonite content obviously indicate that the firing must have been carried out under oxidised circumstances at least in its later phase. However, under oxidised conditions at 1 atm pressure and 910 º C the crystal structure of calcite breaks up into CaO and CO2 and the CO2 in gas form either diffuses or, if it is unable to depart, it will be trapped in the material as tiny bubbles and pores. This did not happen in this brick type thus, consequently the firing temperature did not reach this boundary. The

szabadulása a valószínûbb.

texture of this brick type is serial thus, no tempering material was used for its making. Cracks and cleavages cannot be seen between the quartz tempering material and the brick’s matrix, which indicates that during its transformation into bquartz (at 1 atm pressure and 573 º C) the surrounding clayey matrix could still adjust to the changing volume of the quartz, that is, the raising of the temperature was slow and gradual during the firing (Fig. 30). The second brick type (BRICK2 in Fig. 9) is best represented by Sample PA_TO18_T09. This brownish grey type could only be found in the church wall as well. The many tiny pores are conspicuous in the material visible macroscopically. Its raw material also contains carbonates, but much less than in the case of the first brick type. The pores may have formed due to either a partial diffusion of the CO2 deriving from the disintegration of the original carbonate minerals or the release of the H2O adsorbed by the clay minerals or present in their crystal lattice. The colour of this brick type and the charred plant remains indicate, however, that the firing had taken place under reduced circumstances thus, the latter process that is the release of H2O is the more possible. Judging by its hiatal texture and the types of its non-plastic constituents it is certain that several types of tempering material were used. The tempering material partially consists of river sand and partially of clay pellets of dried clay and a material of unidentified origins that are probably clasts from earlier bricks, which were damaged or broken and ground down to use for tempering. There are no cracks or cleavages to be seen between the quartz tempering material and the base material of the brick, which indicates that during its transformation into bquartz the surrounding clayey matrix could still adjust to the volume transformation of the quartz. That is, the raising of the temperature was slow and gradual during the firing of this brick type (similarly to the first type) (Fig. 31). The third characteristic brick type (BRICK3 in Fig. 9) is red (a typical “brick red”) in colour. Its appearance resembles modern bricks. It is best represented by Sample PA_TO18_T10, but Samples PA_TO18_12 and PA_TO18_4 / 1 also belong in this group. Sample PA_TO18_T10 is from the church wall while the latter two were excavated from the wall of the brick-kiln. All three samples share a striking and characteristic feature, apart from the similarities in matrix and external appearance, namely that they sometimes contain carbonate specks several centime-

Tanulmányok / Essays A harmadik jellegzetes téglatípus (9. ábra: TÉGLA3) vörös (jellegzetes „téglavörös”) színû, a mai modernkori téglákra leginkább emlékeztetô megjelenésû. A limonitosodott biotit nagy mennyisége arra utal, hogy gyenge minôségû, éretlen, terrigén ásványtörmeléket jelentôs mennyiségben tartalmazó agyagos üledéket használtak kiindulási anyagként. Jelenleg nincs magyarázatunk, hogyan keletkezhetnek ezek a struktúrák.
tres in size. The material of the specks is calcite, sometimes pure, occasionally contaminated with small amounts of clay minerals. The base material itself does not or contains only a very small amount of carbonates, however, the proportion of limonite is significant. The origins of the limonite vary, partially coming from the raw material, and partially, judging from the pseudomorphs, the very fine-grained biotite crystals also altered and became a limonite rich fine-grained alteration product during firing. This high concentration of limonite is responsible for the red colour of the brick type. The large quantity of limonitic biotite suggests that a clayey deposit that used as an initial raw material was bad quality, contaminated with immature, terrigenous mineral debris. The few, yet permanently present, elongated, empty, unfilled pores are characteristic of this brick type. Its hiatal texture, the heterogeneity of the nonplastic components and their poor sorting show without doubt that artificial tempering was used. The tempering materials employed were fluvial sand, broken brick grains, and calcite clasts and clusters. In some samples of this brick type grey pellets with concentric inner structures can also be found between the non-plastic constituents. These pellets are tiny, grey, oval-shaped, inhomogeneous bodies showing concentric zones. Their material is not pure clay, but the concentric structure is given by interchanging rings of clay minerals and carbonates. At present there is no explanation for the formation of these extraordinary structures. The simple desiccation of the clayey raw material cannot produce such a claycarbonate alternation resembling the shape and structure of an ooid.

A b) esetben égetett mésszel, CaO-val soványították volna a téglákat. A könnyen porló, morzsolódó anyag, felveheti azokat a kerekített peremû formákat, amelyeket sok téglában láthatunk. Ekkor azonban adódik a kérdés, hogy hogyan keletkezett a CaCO3 összetételû kalcit, amely ma a klasztok anyagát alkotja, a CaO-ból. Ez csakis alacsony oxigénfugacitás mellett, reduktív, faszenes égetés során következhet be, amikor a jelenlévô CO2 reakcióba lép a CaO-val. Ez az elsô két téglatípusnál elméletileg megvalósulhatott, de pl. a karbonátos klasztokat nagy számban tartalmazó harmadik téglatípus bizonyosan oxidatív körülmények között lett kiégetve, ahol a fönti reakció nem jöhet létre a magas oxigénfugacitás miatt.
Again, no cracks or cleavages can be seen between the quartz tempering material and the brick’s base material. Thus, this brick type was also carefully fired, that is, the raising of the temperature was slow and gradual during the process (Fig. 32). We must mention the origins of the conspicuous white carbonate specks here. Their origins are the most enigmatic in the whole brick firing process. In theory, there are three ways that they could enter the material of the brick: a) As ground limestone originally of calcite (CaCO3) (as tempering) b) Burnt lime (CaO) in the form of dry pieces or clusters c) Lime hydrate in the form of Ca(OH)2 as nonhomogenised water-containing plastic material added to the raw materials in its plastic state. Option “a” seems to be the most evident, yet it raises several problems. First of all, although the shape of the clasts in the brick are more or less rectangular there is a relatively large amount of circular, rounded, at times “finger-shaped” white carbonate clasts as well. We would expect a tempering material originating from crushed limestone fragments to be angular. Secondly, the fine-grained calcite is part of the host matrix, there is no sign of any hiatus, although the thermal expansion coefficient of the calcite differs significantly from that of the clay (nevertheless, this contradiction can perhaps be solved if explained by firing in a very thorough, gradual and slow raising temperature). According to one theory, under oxidised circumstances CaCO3 first transforms into CaO then by absorbing the H2O released from the clay minerals into Ca(OH)2. In this latter form it acts ductile during firing thus, creating the “finger-shaped” clasts with rounded rims. The problem with this assumption is that the formation of CaO occurs at such a high temperature, even under oxidised circumstances, that by that temperature the clay minerals transform. This implies that by this temperature not only the adsorbed water, but also the bound water in the crystal lattice is released and evaporated from the material. In the case of option “b” the brick would have been tempered with burnt lime, CaO. The material is friable, crumbles easily and may take on the shapes with rounded rims that we can see in several bricks. However, the question arises how the calcite consisting of CaCO3, which now forms the material of the clasts, materialised from CaO. This can only be carried out in reduced, charcoal firing with low oxygen fugacity when the CO2 present reacts with the CaO. In theory, this could

A negyedik típust (9. Viszont a limonit jelenléte itt is oxidatív környezetben történô égetést jelez. Annyi
33. ábra. A negyedik téglatípust (TÉGLA4) reprezentáló PA_TO18_T11 jelû minta makroszkópos képe Fig. 33. Macroscopic picture of sample PA_TO18_T11, which represents the fourth brick type (BRICK4)
have happened in the case of the first two brick types but, for example, the third type containing a large quantity of carbonate clasts was certainly fired under oxidised circumstances where the above reaction could not take place due to the high oxygen fugacity. In the case of “c” lime hydrate would have been added to the plastic clayey raw material and not homogenised. This could well account for the shape of the “finger-shaped” carbonate specks, but we still need to find an explanation for the formation of the calcite composed of CaCO3 currently providing the material of the clasts. During firing the lime hydrate loses water and CaO develops, but if we would like to “produce” CaCO3 from this we bump into the same problem as in the case of option “b”: this is only possible in reduced firing, but the third sample type incorporating the majority of the bricks was certainly fired under oxidised circumstances. The fourth brick type (BRICK4 in Fig. 9) is represented by Sample PA_TO18_T11. This type was only found in the church wall and not in the material of the kiln. This brick type resembles the third type in many aspects. It may have had a slightly better quality initial raw material, which contained less biotite and quartz, but more authigenous limonite concretions originating from the subsoil. As in the case of the third type, its base material lacks carbonates, but limonite appears (although in a smaller quantity than in type three). Limonite appears rather in the form of concretions. The matrix contains much less very fine-grained limonite transformed from biotite. Thus, the brick’s colour is not as red when seen macroscopically as in the case of the third type, but it is more yellowish. However, the presence of limonite suggests firing in an oxidised environment as well. The large carbonate specks in this brick type are also characteristic and conspicuous, very similar to the third type. The same problem rises due to their presence and similar explanations are possible as in that case, so we will not repeat them again here. However, we can certainly state that this carbonate was originally added as an artificial tempering material and was not an integral part of the raw material. In addition, fluvial sand was also used to prepare this brick type, but in a smaller quantity than for the third type. Based on the size distribution and the more homogeneous appearance of the quartz crystals it can be postulated that the fluvial sand was sieved when preparing the brick. Ground brick fragments, however, cannot

Elôbbi minta a mészégetô kemence nyugati oldalából, utóbbi minta a templomfalból került elô. Tisztán látszanak a keverés nyomai: örvényszerû agyagos sávok-foltok a karbonátos alapanyagban.
be found in this sample type. The firing was most probably carried out at a high temperature because a smaller part of the base material has already melted, which represented by the glass in it. From this viewpoint, the brick type is a transition between “usual” bricks (first three types) and the slag-like, vitrified samples (sixth type) (Fig. 33). The fifth type (BRICK5 in Fig. 9) cannot be called a real brick: these samples are irregularshaped, off-white and greyish, fired calcareous plasterings containing reddish streaks. Their material is mainly calcium carbonate, to which clay specks-clusters-bands of clay were mixed while still in a plastic state in a varying amount from sample to sample and inhomogeneously dispersed, and this mixture was then fired. This type is represented by Samples PA_TO18_05 and PA_TO18_T12. The former sample was collected from the west side of the lime-kiln, the latter from the church wall. The texture of these samples obviously shows that the carbonate and the clayey constituents were mixed in a plastic state while not much attention was paid to homogenise the material. The signs of mixing are clearly visible as whirl-like argillaceous bands and specks in the carbonate matrix. To form such a texture the carbonate material also had to be plastic, or at least fine dust-like, into which the plastic raw clay could be mixed. That is why it is more probable that the initial material, into which they mixed the clay was burnt lime or plastic lime hydrate is even more likely. It is difficult to imagine that ground limestone could be mixed so well with the clay and create such plastic bands and

A hatodik, egyben utolsó építôanyag-típust (9. ábra: TÉGLA6) a túlégetett, üvegesedett téglák és tégladarabok: a PA_TO18_4 / 2, a PA_TO18_4 / 3 és a PA_TO18_4 / 4 jelû minták képviselik. Ezek a mészégetô kemencébôl származnak. Ezek a szürke színû, helyenként zöldes és barnás színû sávokat, helyenként már üvegszerû mázat mutató minták komoly mértékû túlhevítéssel keletkeztek. Jelentôs részben mesterséges úton létrehozott kôzetüveget tartalmaznak, tehát az égetési hômérséklet elérte az alapanyagot alkotó ásványok egy részének olvadáspontját, azaz akár 1000 –1200 C º-ot is. Ezek a minták tulajdonképpen elrontott égetések salakjai, illetve a kemence legnagyobb hôhatásának kitett építôköveibôl keletkeztek. Némelyik minta alakja egészen furcsa, hirtelen megdermedt üvegre vagy vízbe ömlött lávadarabra hasonlít. Nem meglepô módon a mészégetô kemence különbözô részeibôl kerültek elô, hiszen az itteni építôkövek
whirls. Next we must somehow explain why we find calcite, that is, calcium carbonate, in its current form in the clay of these samples. One possible answer is that these materials were originally lime hydrate plasterings roughly mixed with wet clay, which were used to fill the cracks-cleavages of the lime-kiln and the brick-kiln to secure reduced conditions for firing. This would have been important because the crystal lattice of the calcite falls apart within the limestone and the CO2 diffuse from the material under reduced conditions only at much higher temperature compared to oxidised conditions. As we have seen above several brick types contained carbonate as tempering material or in a very fine-grained distribution in the raw material. This poor, initial quality raw material would have made it necessary to perform the firing of the brick under circumstances as reduced as possible. These plasterings secured this, which may also explain their totally irregular, at times flat-shaped forms. Their creation can be interpreted as the release and departure of H2O from the wet mixture of the lime hydrate (Ca(OH)2) due to heating while the remaining CaO reacts with CO2 during the reduced charcoal firing thus, transforming into CaCO3 and performing what we could call limeburning in reverse. This is supported by the studies of the samples from the lime-kiln. Here we could observe that some of the larger samples displayed varying hardness on one side of the sample than on the other. One side was hard and carbonate-filled, fizzing when treated with hydrochloric acid while the other side starting from the inside towards the outside becomes more loose and dust-like in structure, and does not fizz, which suggests that it is still mainly constituted of CaO. This latter could have been the exterior side of the lime plastering, which could not transform due to being exposed to the outer atmosphere rich in oxygen. The fact that a few smaller, well-transformed, fired, hard pieces from this brick type were also found in the church wall also suggests that the builders were short of raw materials (Fig. 34). The sixth and last building material type (BRICK6 in Fig. 9) is represented by the overfired, vitrified bricks and brick fragments. Samples PA_TO18_4/2, PA_TO18_4/3 and PA_TO18_4/4 originating from the lime-kiln belong to this group. These grey samples, at parts with greenish and brownish streaks, at others with almost glassy glaze were formed due to a significant over-heating. They are mostly com-

Hasonló folyamat zajlik a természetben pl. az an-
posed of artificially produced glass, so the firing temperature had reached the melting point of some of the minerals constituting the base material thus, even 1000 –1200 ºC. These samples are basically the slag remains of firings, also originating from the building stones exposed to the most heat within the kiln. Some of the samples have rather strange shapes, resembling suddenly solidified glass or lava fragments, which had flown into water. Not surprisingly, they came from different sections of the lime-kiln, as the building stones from this spot were exposed to high temperature and recurrent heating. We do not find such vitrified specimens in the samples derived from the brick-kiln, which supports the earlier conclusion that much attention was given to the temperature of firing, and to the gradual, slow raising of the temperature while this seems to have been looked over in the case of the limekiln. The material of these vitrified bricks is formed of slightly anisotropic glass and a mineral composition created from the high-temperature alteration of the original clay minerals. These altered components are unidentifiable under optical microscope, brownish in colour and very finegrained. The latter could only be determined by an X-ray powder diffraction study due to the rather small size of the crystals. Only the mass of very thin acicular skeletal crystals can be seen by the microscope, frequently arranged radially, which undoubtedly were formed during the cooling of the melt while there was not enough time for them to fully crystallise. Opaque minerals can only be found in these samples. Their material is probably magnetite, which was formed by the dewatering and alteration of the limonite in the initial raw material. Samples PA_TO18_4 / 2 and PA_TO18_4 / 3 also contain hematite, obviously indicating an oxidised environment during the partial melting and transformation of the material. The banded melt veins in Sample PA_TO18_4 / 2 are well discernible: more transformed bands contains the brownish, transformed specks and limonite of the original material without glass, which interchange with bands composed of opaque minerals and a large amount of glass. Cracks are visible in the sample running parallel to the bands and carbonate has concreted alongside these cracks. However, this is secondary in origin and not a carbonate phase formed earlier during firing as the calcite would not have endured the temperature of partial melting. The extent of over-firing and vitrification vary

ábra). 2.4.3 A téglák származási helyének vizsgálata A téglák alapanyagának forrásterületét helyi nyersanyagokból készített, oxidatív körülmények között kiégetett mintákkal való összehasonlítás alapján próbáltuk meghatározni. Az üledékmintákat elektromos kemencében égettük ki 750 º Con. A 11 mintavételi helyrôl származó 16 darab mintával vetettük össze a templom falából illetve a téglaégetô kemencébôl gyûjtött, fönt leírt téglatípusokat.
from sample to sample. Sample PA_TO18_4 / 2 is the least vitrified, the brown specks and bands of the remains of the initial raw material are even visible macroscopically. Sample PA_TO18_4 / 4 is the most vitrified, the initial raw material can barely be seen, and only a few quartz crystals have remained. The amount of pores is high in all of these sample types, and they are mostly rounded unfilled cavities. They were formed by the release of the adsorbed water content of the initial clay, then the CO2 content of the carbonate and the intercrystalline H2O content of the clay minerals, which blew up the matrix on the verge of melting in the form of vapour and gas. Similar processes happen naturally as well, for example, in the degassing process of andesite lavas. These slag pieces cannot be found among the building blocks of the church wall. Their vitrification makes them prone to breaking and their shapes are frequently so deformed that they are totally unsuitable for building material (Fig. 35). 2.4.3 Examining the origins of the bricks We attempted to determine the source area of the raw materials of bricks by comparing them with sediment samples of local raw materials, which were fired in an electric kiln under oxidised conditions at 750 º C. We compared 16 samples from 11 sampling sources with the above described brick types from the church wall and the brick-kiln. These samples came partly from the subsoil and the clayey strata under the subsoil, and partly from the sides and bottom of the ashpits. Based on the comparative thin section studies we can deduce that among the samples marked as “TO18, spot 1., subsoil” the sample taken 250 – 300 cm from below the excavated surface shows similarity to the first brick type, which is represented by Sample PA_TO18_T03, a brick fragment contains fine-grained carbonate in its base material. The carbonate content of the base material, the mineral composition and the size distribution and roundness of the quartz crystals indicate that this local, poor quality raw material served as the base for this brick type. This also explains the plant remains in the bricks. The base material of the most frequent, third type of brick (represented by Samples PA_TO18_T10, PA_TO18_12 and PA_TO18_4 / 1), shows the most similarities to the fired material of both Sample TO18 / 14 (S-1600) and Sample TO18 / 16 (S-1785).

Elôbbi összehasonlító minta a mészégetô kemence hamus gödrének D-i falából, míg a második a téglaégetô környezetében talált gödrökbôl származik. 2.5 Konklúzió A templom falába épített természetes kövek 3 kôzettípusba sorolhatók (lásd 9. A harmadik kôzettípus, amelyet a templom falá-
The latter comparative sample was taken from the southern wall of the ashpit of the lime-kiln while the second comes from the pits surrounding the brickkiln. This supports the fact that the pits were indeed used as clay pits. The structure of the base material, its richness in limonitic biotite, and the lack of carbonate corresponds well with the appearance of the base material of the brick type, just as the size distribution and appearance of the quartz population in the base material. This base material was probably tempered with river sand, from which the other, larger-sized quartz population observed in this brick type originates from. This brick was also tempered with brick fragments and carbonate clasts of unknown origin. This base material also resembles the clayeylimonitic material, which was mixed to the carbonate plasterings (fifth building material type). We could not find a similar comparative sample for the second and fourth brick types. While the total transformation and re-melting of the material of the sixth type, the vitrified, slag-like bricks, makes such comparative studies impossible. 2.5 Conclusion The natural stones built into the church wall belong to three rock types (see Fig. 9). The most common is freshwater limestone (travertine), sandstone cemented by calcite is somewhat less used, and transformed rhyolite appears in the smallest quantity. The site of origin of the transformed rhyolite could be localised exactly. This rock type originates from the stone quarry at the borders of the district of Sárszentmiklós (ca. 30 km north-west from the archaeological site). The freshwater limestones (travertine) do not originate from the classic Hungarian sites exploited since Roman times (e.g. Tata, Süttô, Dunaalmás, or Budakalász in the mountains of Buda). Instead, a well-cemented local variety of stones, classed among the very young Upper PleistoceneHolocene Vértesszôlôs Travertine Formation, can be considered, which we can find near Sárszentmiklós just under the surface soil. These stones were therefore, probably quarried near Sárszentmiklós, in a small so-called “penknife” quarry popular in the Middle Ages. The third stone type, which we found in the church wall is the sandstone cemented by calcite. This sandstone was formed by the calcite cementation of relatively immature fluvial sand deposits,

A sokféle téglatípus,
which had not undergone too much transportation. Our samples are “freshly cemented” sandstones originating from the Upper Pleistocene-Holocene epoch, which occur both in the region between the Danube and Tisza rivers and along the right banks of the Danube. The sandstone was most probably formed on the banks of a lake, where the travertine was also formed from the deposits. South-east of Sárszentmiklós several of these sand beds of varying cementation can be found just below the top soil. Based on the above, it is almost certain that the natural building stones of the church wall and that of the lime and brick-kilns were found in the surroundings of the district of Sárszentmiklós, a little south-east from it, in the local, shallow, opencast “penknife” quarry. Freshwater limestone was quarried here and the sandstones cemented by calcite probably also originate from the edge of this mining area, from the region where the travertine transformed into the neighbouring calcite cemented sandstone. The latter is not ideal for building due to the relative weakness of the calcite cement. When the builders ran out of these cemented raw materials they recourse to rhyolite, which was less suitable for building purposes. The above gives us the impression that the builders did not have the financial means to acquire good quality raw materials transported along the Danube. Instead, they located the closest raw material source still of acceptable quality and if it was necessary they resorted to less good quality stones (the use of less well cemented sandstone and transformed rhyolite). The foregoing conclusions are strengthened by the studies of the bricks and other building materials of artificial origin. The bricks were made from locally available, poor or medium quality clay, contaminated with quartz and other terrigenous minerals, and at places carbonates and plant remains. The plastic material was tempered in several ways using fluvial sand, ground limestone and fragments of burnt lime, as well as ground brick. It is considered that the latter could not cause any problems during firing, while the quartz sand and the ground limestone are problematic tempering materials due to their varying expansion coefficients: the phase transformations of the quartz and the disintegration of calcite at a higher temperature and the diffusion of CO2 formed from it. Thus, careless firing could lead to bricks of inferior quality. The several types of bricks, the interchanging of oxidised and

reduced firing methods and the poor quality raw materials infer that a sort of “all you can find” attitude was prevalent and the brickmaker(s) did not have the opportunity (time? money?) to select the better quality raw materials or to acquire better quality, more pure material from a remote source. It was proved that the raw materials of the bricks are local of inferior quality, which were exploited from the borrow pits near the brick-kiln. On the other hand, we have found ample proof in the fabric of the bricks, which indicate the professional firing of the bricks. Considerable effort was put into producing the best possible bricks from such poor quality raw materials and the various tempering materials. The over-fired, vitrified samples only occurred in the material from the limekiln, where this suggests somewhat hurried or careless execution while such samples were not found near the brick-kiln. Only the fourth fabric shows the signs of a small scale over-firing and slight vitrification. Finally, the use of well-fired, hard therefore usable quality, calcareous plastering for the building of the church wall may indicate once again the insufficient supply of raw materials and the lack of financial means.
