Phaedra’s Love
Folkwang Universität der Künste, Directing/Acting studies, fourth year, Essen, Germany
This year we said a cheerful goodbye to our former General Director Jacqueline van Benthem. Over the past few years she has led ITs through many storms and thanks to her efforts, ITs can now call itself the biggest student festival in Europe. Thankfully, with her new job as Managing Director for the Compagnietheater, she will not be far away. Even

on a business level. We welcome the young Jasminka Beganovic as our new Managing Director. Another novelty in 2013 is our cooperation with NEU/NOW festival, organised by ELIA, the European League of Institutes of the Arts. As a pilot the theatre programme of this traveling multidisciplinary festival for students has been included in the ITs programme. You can easily find the selection, in which. I myself was lucky to have been involved, as it is marked with a yellow star.
more so than in former years, the Compagnietheater will be focusing explicitly on talent development, which means the ties between ITs and Compagnietheater will remain close. And within the ITs management we have also embraced the younger generation
Once again this year’s ITs presents all graduating actors, directors, mime artists, choreographers, dancers, scenographers and playwrights from the Netherlands, plus a selection of very special shows from abroad. Within the elated context of a festival we will be able to get introduced to these young people’s unique views on theatre, and on life. I wish everyone; visitors, participants, and our international guests, an inspiring festival. Enjoy the many, many good things the new generation has in store for us!

Phaedra loves Hippolytus, her stepson. But Hippolytus does not love her. So Phaedra kills herself. That’s the starting point. In this interpretation of Sarah Kane’s text (which in itself is an interpretation of Seneca’s text) we meet five actors: the cynical and self-centred Hippolytus, and four extravagant characters, including Phaedra. Hippolytus is lying on a bed that is set on a dirt floor. The others are crawling in the dirt, making grotesque movements, celebrating, and trying to get Hippolytus to let himself be sucked into their delusional universe. Phaedra houdt van Hippolytus, haar stiefzoon. Maar Hippolytus houdt niet van haar. Dus doodt Phaedra zichzelf.

Artistic Director ITs Festival Amsterdam The dust has settled and slowly the consequences of the cuts are beginning to sink in. Production houses have collapsed, as have a number of theatre and dance companies. They will be sorely missed. But after two years of crippling insecurity we can now get back to business with renewed energy, and set up new initiatives. We’re shaking off the negativity and getting back to work, with renewed courage. We are taking our cues from the youngest generation, which is combining artistic development with cultural entrepreneurship and reaching out to society to secure a firm rooting for their art. To prove that they fulfil a genuine need in society.

INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM- MERS MEETING & PITCH ITs wants to support young performing artists in their struggle to find a place for themselves within the performing arts. This is why ITs invites a wide-ranging selection of (inter)national dance and theatre presenters each year to come and discover talented young makers. Last year this initiative helped over 70 performances to get booked at venues in the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, Serbia, Iran and Turkey. And this year ITs is also organising an informal get-together with presenters and up-andcoming artists from the Netherlands and abroad. During this meet-and-greet you can get acquainted over a drink and during the ITs Pitch, two dozen young theatre and dance makers will pitch their work to you. Here, you can discover the stars of tomorrow during the pitch and help lay the foundations for these artists’ careers. To register, professionals only, contact Ben Visser at

Eight hundred toy soldiers, four windsocks, a costume for falling, a glasshouse, an elephant, a conveyor belt, Godzilla, a chandelier that can be worn, a slideshow of teeth, a miniature giant city and fifty yellow lightbulbs. A performance exists only for a moment. It is live. It is fleeting. It cannot be preserved. This is what is left. The remnants. The evidence of what has occurred. This is an exhibition to present the graduates from the Scenography Department at the Amsterdam Theaterschool.

Mr. Speak has been on the scene for 18 years and has grown from a rookie into an old hand at DJing. Everyone is ****ed straight in the **** by love. Grief. Pain. Confusion. Deception. Embarrassment. Loathing. Laughter. Screams. Roars. In an apocalyptic roller coaster of short scenes two young pessimists are dragging us along in their completely failed attempts at finding nuance. Love is a dirty piece of **** and that’s what it will always be. Yannick van de Velde and Tom van Kalmthout share their views on love in 30 minutes of absurdism.
STUDIO/MENSINK/VANDERBROECK is made up of performance art graduates Marius Mensink and Dennis Vanderbroeck, a duo you may know from an earlier piece called FREMDKÖRPER. RAUM is the second show in a series which they based on David Lynch’s mysterious thriller Lost Highway. Two men, trapped in a parallel universe, are struggling with their fear of each other, and their desire for each other. Balancing between illusionism, theatre and mime, this performance inexplicably manages to fuse the performers with the space in which they are performing.
We are the dancing and singing nonsense of the world. I wear the proscribed clothes and do as I am demonstrated. I do it so that I do not stand out. I am small, and I come in great numbers. I am smaller than the smallest grain of sand, a tiny, tiny grain of sliteyed sand.

We were born to do great things, but to tell the truth, we’d rather do nothing. And we must make sure that we’re all actually doing nothing, otherwise it would be an uneven battle. Thankfully we have the internet to keep an eye on each other. A girl applies her make-up to look pretty every day and then she goes and tries to get as much attention as she can. She’s struggling, with real feelings and with her first world problems. And sometimes she forgets the difference between the two. The answer is this: nothing.

Two professors, born in the wrong decade (the eighties) are the heads of a think-tank. With self-assuredness and directness they study questions regarding human existence using live experiments. They have developed a flourishing existentialist philosophy, full of good intentions. But what is the use of a body that is dedicated to thinking about problems, yet refuses to take action? While enjoying a nice glass of wine and Belgian chocolates, seated comfortably in the audience, we witness their downfall.

Richard Wagner wrote this first part of his tetralogy Der Ring des Nibelungen as an unmitigated attack on capitalism. His 14-hour epic-moralistic musical spectacle, which he populated with jealous gods, lascivious dwarves and passionate water nymphs was an attempt to reunite Germany which had fallen apart into federal states and dukedoms. Using some woollen blankets, a CD player and their imagination, five students from the famed Koninklijk Conservatorium Antwerpen are bringing their interpretation into the limelight. As deeply personal as it is committed, and shamelessly moralistic.

The department for speech and drama is the place for verbally gifted students. They are able to play with words, create dramatic tension in their texts, turn a personal view into a universal story. Or, they can make music. Marjolein van der Meer has formed a band. A band of 7. From the violin to electronics. With lyrics that can be a little honest, but also nice and dishonest. Something to do with dreams and something to do with betrayal. To entertain you.

Cooking Marmitako is a piece in which nine performers draw their social, political and emotional maps while cooking a marmitako for the audience. With extracts from Rodrigo Garcia’s texts as a backdrop, the show takes the sharing of different cultures and experiences as its starting point. At the end of the show, the dish will be served to the audience.

PAP Showcase is the result of the international pilot project PAP, Performing Arts Programme. Nine students from England, Italy and the Basque Country came together in Bilbao for nine months. During this time, they worked with several directors and developed their own pieces. And now they are touring Europe, visiting various festivals, including GIFT (GB) and IYMT partners BE Festival (GB) and ACT Festival in Bilbao. And of course they are coming to ITs! PAP is a life-forming experience, residency project and promotion platform for young makers rolled into one. As part of the project, the participants are taught by the international organisations involved in PAP, such as the Performing Arts Department of Leeds MET, Cricoteka from Krakow and the regular staff of Bizkaiko Antzerki Ikastegia (BAI). The initiator and organiser of this European experience is BAI.

The Smell of Nothing
The Danish National School of Perfoming Arts, fourth year, Copenhagen, Denmark
In a mix between theatre, performance art and Butoh, The Smell of Nothing engages the audience in a quest for human identity. From an amoeba, living its underwater life, via a creature taking its first steps on solid ground, to a copulating animal that slowly becomes human. Man, the one who survives, hunts, kills. Man, who acquires a name, a consciousness, and identity. Their travels in Japan inspired the members of Loop Soup Company to create this piece. With their personal stories they uncover some existential extracts from human history.

Photo albums revive our memories while our dreams are where we process them. Lucie Páchová has taken her grandmother’s photo album as a starting point for this multimedia performance, adding images from her own dreams. Unorthodox longings, subconscious desires, unexplained events and extraordinary physical opportunities rise to the surface. Using video, music, light and performance she creates a dream world in which the audience is invited to recall its own memories.
A woman undresses and dresses, undergoing a true metamorphosis. For UN/ DRESS, dance maker Masako Matsushita has examined the consumerism and excess in our society today. Using an ostentatiously simple set of tools she explores the meaning of clothes and questions the role of the body in our times. A revealing solo in which body and object become one.

Chris is standing in front of his office building, but it seems he is no longer welcome there. Clair has grown tired of translating and is secretly pining for the famous writer Mohammed. Jenny is trying to overcome her loneliness now that her husband is fighting in a faraway, mysterious war. With every fibre of their beings they are trying to get a grip on the surreal, volatile world in which they live. Using their imagination, they create a completely new reality for themselves.

Meet Johnny. Johnny hates indifference, he has no faith in the future, and usually disagrees. In nine encounters Johnny wards off the end of the world, an empty space is being guarded, and two lovers lose each other. A surprisingly hopeful portrait in which everyone seems to be meeting the wrong person and nobody ever seems to get home.

Ontmoet Johnny. The French police has made a horrific discovery at the home of writer Michel Houellebecq. The reclusive writer and his dog have been reduced to wafer-thin salami slices. Only the two heads are found intact. The investigation leads police commissioner Jasselin and his assistant Ferber into the realm of visual art, where the unknown artist Jed Martin has shot to fame overnight with his exhibition The map is more interesting than the territory.

Bertha is an only child. Outside it’s cold, but father is always warm. He gazes through his spectroscope in a sweat; his police uniform is sticking to his body. Mother is shivering because her heart is cold. There is not much to do in the village where Bertha lives, but thankfully there’s Nojd. He knows what love is. Her parents don’t. A divorce is looming, but for now, Bertha’s parents are clinging to the plans they must make for Bertha’s future. A battle that blurs the boundaries between love and hate.

With her eccentric behaviour, a woman is drawing attention, and suddenly placed in the spotlight. She turns from the local village idiot into one of the biggest entertainers of our times. But the excessive attention to her personality is addictive, and slowly but steadily she starts losing her grip on her own identity.

All your life you’re busy wanting all the things you do not have. You stress out over money and your career, you exercise, you join the queue like everyone else, you paint your house, you move the clocks back an hour. You fall ill, get well, buy stuff, take out the dry cleaning and you move the clocks forward an hour. All your life you wait for happiness to land on your doorstep. And then you die. People are saddened, they have a good cry, and then they go to lunch.

Titus is about to become Emperor of Rome and finds himself forced to end his relationship with the love of his life, the Palestinian Berenice. He appoints Antiochus, who has been secretly in love with Berenice for years, to take her back to her native country. Director Diepenhorst recognised the psychological paralysis of his generation in this French classicist soap. Berenice is a play about love and sacrifice, but most importantly about the warm blanket of self-pity that makes for such exquisite wallowing.

The polar ice is melting, unveiling potential riches. Somewhere in the polar region lies Hans Island, a big rock measuring 1.3 square kilometre. Nobody owns it at the moment, which means it belongs to everyone. Canada and Denmark are both claiming it as a national area, hoisting their respective flags in turn. Then, a Danish soldier and one from Canada are dropped there, accidentally at the same time, and the question: ‘Who owns Hans Island?’ demands an urgent reply. A performance about high stakes, planting flags, and a possible world war.

artistic leader dance ITs Festival Amsterdam
‘I am most looking forward to the work presented by the dance academies and the level of quality of the schools in the Netherlands and beyond, and the choreographers coming from there. ITs brings a wealth of influences and information to Amsterdam, which allows different artists to talk to each other about the contrasts and the similarities between their disciplines.’ Jasper van Luijk, winner of the ITs Choreography Award 2012, now back at ITs 2013 with Quite Discontinuous
The last few months have finally revealed the state of the Dutch (subsidized) dance landscape. All of last year’s speculations are no longer necessary. Some facts: no more Noord Nederlandse Dans, no more Dance Works Rotterdam, less money for research and production houses, no more Station Zuid… It is a hard reality: not just facts and figures, but real people without employment. At times it has felt like mourning. And - as in life - after a period of mourning, we move on and adjust to the new situation, a situation that will demand even more determination, discipline and dedication. Let’s not forget to remember what we DO have. Let’s welcome and celebrate this year’s dancers and choreographers, who I am sure will give us a reason to be hopeful about the future.

With eight women in one class, there was a great curiosity for the opposite sex. For Male Me the graduates talked to many different kinds of male creatures and immersed themselves in the brain and the body of the male. With a great sense of humour, and using emotions, movement and text they try to understand the opposite sex. Imitation alone is not enough. In Male Me these women are making a serious attempt to become men.
The Rotterdam dance school has been educating dancers since 1931 and is now one of the most prominent dance schools in Europe. These confident third-years are presenting a varied programme of contemporary dance. Works by the renowned choreographer Ed Wubbe (Scapino) are alternated with pieces by some of the younger choreographers such as Alida Dors, Itamar Serussi Sahar and Jens van Daele. An excellent mix which offers our top talents an opportunity to present their versatile skills.

“In the beginning, there was nothing, just a yawning abyss veiled in mists. The wind was blowing without definition. And then came the word…and the burrowing could begin.” The Belgian choreographer Chris De Feyter was a top athlete, a circus artist, a dancer and a choreographer. Each of his career choices reflects his fascination with the possibilities the body offers. With the uniquely creative fourth-year students from the Modern Theatre Dance course he has gone in search of the communicative options of that body. It has resulted in an unorthodox and energetic group piece.
Last year Jasper van Luijk won the ITs Choreography Award, and now his latest performance Quite Discontinuous is presented at ITs. Van Luijk tries to capture his fascination with lifelessness in text and movement. How do we respond to the death of a loved one? How does a group redefine itself when one of its members is missing? And how does our perspective on ourselves and our relationship with others shift when death has entered our lives?

Kill Your Darlings Artesis Hogeschool Antwerpen, Koninklijk Conservatorium, Opleiding Dans, fourth year, Antwerp, Belgium
For their solo performances, the students from the Antwerp dance school were asked to answer the question Who am I? for themselves. For Fée Roels this assignment formed the kick-off to an extensive self-examination of her current ‘I’ and future self. In her slightly absurdist solo Kill Your Darlings she allows us to share in her search.

Humans are poetic beings. Each body drags with it the scar of its birth. In the confrontation with everyday life, the being forgets this wound, which is discreetly taken care of by our silent poetry. The solo Corps du délit creates an opening for that weak winged angel in charge of our poetic injury. It offers the floor to the one who doesn’t speak, the one who hesitates.
LiquidE Gold Danish National School of Performing Arts, fourth year, Copenhagen, Denmark
Marie Helen Andersson has taken the solo Liquid Gold made by Lucy Suggate as her point of departure and made her own interpretation, improvising within a set structure. The movements of her supple body are mesmerising, fragile and sensual as we watch the dancer change. From a human being into liquid gold.

Two swans. Odette is innocent and gentle, while Odile seduces us with her free behaviour and sensuality. Based on the classic Swan Lake and the film Black Swan this show sees ratio and emotion, courage and fear, restriction and courage battle it out. Twee zwanen.

ITs has given the students from Berlin 40 minutes to present their school. The young choreographers have taken this forfeit as their starting point and divided the minutes equally among the 13 class mates. In a series of shortcuts the thirteen mini-choreographies are juxtaposed and engage in a dialogue on the spot. The result is an exciting choreographic experiment.
