PLACE THE KING IN THE RIGHT POSITION Franziska merupakan sosok yang kritis melihat berbagai persoalan di sekitarnya. Hidup dalam dua budaya, Jerman dan Indonesia juga menjadi kesempatan baginya untuk mengamati perbedaan—dan persamaan—di antara kedua budaya tersebut. Sebagai orang Jerman, mudah diduga jika Franziska cukup tertarik dengan nilai-nilai tradisi dan spiritual dalam kebudayaan Indonesia, khususnya kebudayaan Jawa, tempat Franziska saat ini menetap. Seperti umumnya “orang luar” dia dapat melihat dan merasakan keistimewaan budaya Jawa, yang mungkin bagi orang lokal menjadi hal yang biasa. Namun di sisi lain, Franziska tetap orang Jerman yang secara kritis melihat berbagai aspek sosial dan politik yang menurutnya tidak proper di dunia.

Franziska directs her critical mind to look at the issues around her. Living in two cultures— German and Indonesian—has allowed her the opportunity to observe the differences, and similarities, between them. It is perhaps easy to deduce her interest, as a Germanborn artist, in the traditions and spirituality of Indonesian cultures, especially of the Javanese culture that she is currently inhabiting. As with other “outsiders”, she is able to observe and experience the uniqueness of Javanese culture, which might be considered ordinary by the locals. On the other hand, Franziska remains a German person who critically views the various socio-political aspects around the world that are, in her opinion, improper.

Karya-karya Franziska di Indonesia bisa dikatakan merupakan persimpangan berbagai persoalan yang dilihatnya di Indonesia dan juga di Jerman, serta relasi di antara keduanya. Hal itu juga bisa diperlebar menjadi persimpangan persoalan Barat dan Timur. Dengan kata lain apa yang dipersoalkan juga merupakan situasi global saat ini. Sebagai seniman Jerman yang saat ini menetap di Indonesia, Franziska seperti berada dalam persimpangan jalan yang

Franziska’s works, created in Indonesia, can be considered as an intersection or the crossroads between the various issues she has observed in Indonesia and in Germany, as well as the relationships between the two. They can also be expanded to represent the intersection between the West and the East. In other words, she is also questioning or highlighting the current global situation. As a German artist currently living in Indonesia, Franziska’s situation can be

kondisinya berbeda. Dia dapat melihat kedua jalan tersebut memiliki sisi baik dan buruknya masing-masing. Namun ada aspek yang tampaknya tampil dominan pada kedua jalan tersebut, yaitu cengkeraman sistem ekonomi kapital. Globalisasi saat ini memang tidak bisa dipisahkan dari pemain utamanya, yaitu kapitalisme. Sudah terlalu banyak ulasan yang menyatakan bagaimana kapitalisme di samping mendatangkan kemakmuran juga menhasilkan kehancuran. Memang kelas menengah yang lebih makmur terus tumbuh di negara-negara berkembang. Di atas kertas pertumbuhan ekonomi mengalami peningkatan. Ruang-ruang urban dengan gaya hidup konsumtif terus tumbuh. Namun hal itu tampaknya berbanding lurus dengan degradasi lingkungan, menipisnya sumber daya alam, dan lenyapnya pola-pola tradisi, berikut segala kearifannya. Pokok soal dalam karya-karya Franziska memang mengenai dampak kapitalisme. Tentu saja untuk Indonesia topik dari karyakarya Franziska sangat relevan, perkara dampak buruk kapitalisme mudah kita jumpai secara telanjang. Kritik terhadap kapitalisme merupakan tema yang dominan dalam seni rupa kontemporer Barat. Kesadaran kritis yang sama tampak pada Franziska, dia menyadari betapa konsep ekonomi yang datang dari Barat tersebut memberikan dampak luar biasa secara global termasuk pada masyarakat Indonesia. Pada intinya kapitalisme yang menjadi pengejawantahan konsep liberal masyarakat Barat didasari oleh dominasi dan penaklukan, sebagaimana dikatakan oleh Suzi Gablik, “For a long time now, the cultural coding of modern Western civilization has centered in notion of dominance and mastery: The dominance of humans over nature, of masculine over feminine, of the wealthy and powerful over the poor, and Western over non-Western cultures. These some goals of dominance and mastery, which are crucial to our society’s notion of success have also become the formula

likened to that of standing on an intersection of two different conditions. She is able to see the good and bad in each of them. However, there seems to be a dominant aspect shared by the two roads: the grip of capitalist economy. Globalization can no longer be separated from it lead actor: capitalism. There are too many reviews and discourses stating how capitalism leads not only to prosperity but also to destruction. Certainly, the prosperous middle class continues to grow in developing countries. Theoretically, there is an increase in economic development. Urban spaces catering to consumptive lifestyle continue to emerge. However, it is directly proportional to environmental degradation, depletion of natural resources, the loss of traditional life patterns and their attendant wisdoms. The key subject of Franziska’s works is the impact of capitalism. Certainly, it is a relevant subject/theme for Indonesia—the issue of capitalism’s detrimental impact is clear to see. Criticisms against capitalism is a dominant theme in Western contemporary art. The same critical awareness can be witnessed in Franziska, in her awareness of how this Western-born economic concept has a far-reaching, global impact, including on the people of Indonesia. At its core, capitalism is the manifestation of Western liberal society, a concept based on domination and subjugation, as expounded by Suzi Gablik, “For a long time now, the cultural coding of modern Western civilization has centered in notions of dominance and mastery: the dominance of humans over nature, of masculine over feminine, of the wealthy and powerful over the poor, and Western over non-Western cultures. These same goals of dominance and mastery, which are crucial to our society’s notion of success, have also become the formula for global destruction—it is logic a that pervades every experience in contemporary culture.” 1

Dengan kata lain hal itu menjadi mantra seluruh bangsa. Jika tidak mendominasi maka akan menjadi mangsa negara/bangsa lain melalui penjajahan kapital. Tentu saja dalam logika tersebut, semua memiliki dorongan yang sama: lebih baik menjadi pemangsa dari pada dimangsa. Masalahnya untuk jadi pemangsa tentu harus memiliki modal kapital dan kekuasaan geopolitik yang besar. Dua hal yang tak dimiliki oleh Indonesia. Tentu saja bagi seniman, kesadaran terhadap situasi tersebut tentu tak berarti harus sepakat atau semata-mata menentang kredo kapitalisme, namun mencari alternatifnya. Seperti dikatakan Suzi Gablik bahwa pemangsa pun akan sampai pada ujung kehancuran. Upaya mencari alternatif tampaknya yang melatari sikap hidup Franziska termasuk keseniannya. Lukisan-lukisan Franziska yang tampil pada pameran ini masing-masing bisa dilihat sebagai cuplikan dari masalah besar yang diangkat sang seniman. Kendati narasi atau cuplikan tersebut saling berbeda, namun didasari oleh persoalan yang sama. Berada dalam persimpangan budaya, dualisme agaknya menjadi atmosfir yang melingkupi cara berpikir dan berkarya Franziska. Hal tersebut terlihat dalam penggarapan visual karya-karya Franziska. Franziska pandai mengoptimalkan kemampuannya menggambar, tapi tidak ke arah realisme fotografis—yang mementinkan draftmanship yang tinggi. Karyakarya lukis Franziska muncul dengan penggayaan visual yang menekankan pada metafor. Cenderung agak digayakan dengan atmosfir visual Timur, seperti ada jejak-jejak miniature painting dari Persia dan India yang memang menjadi inspirasi Franziska. Namun di sisi lain karya-karya tersebut tetap terasa sebagai karya seniman Barat, karena tidak terjebak pada akrobat ketrampilan menggambar,

Worryingly, the paradigms of dominance and mastery have infected all cultures, globally. In other words, they have become the overriding mantra of every nation. If not fully dominant, then the region in question will, sooner or later, fall under other countries/nations through capitalistic colonialism. Based on this logic, everything or everyone has adopted the same impetus: it is better to hunt than be hunted; better predator than prey. However, to become a predator, one must possess a significant amount of capital and geopolitical power—two things that Indonesia lacks. Certainly, as an artist, an awareness of such situation does not necessarily mean either concurrence or outright resistance to the capitalist creed, but to find an alternative. Suzi Gablik discussed how even a predator will ultimately encounter destruction. A desire to discover alternatives have informed Fransizka’s attitudes in life, including in her art. Fransiska’s paintings at this exhibition can be seen as fragments of a greater issue she wishes to highlight. Despite the narrative differences, each fragment is created based on the same issue. Standing on the crossroads of culture, this dualism seems to become the atmosphere that envelops Fransizka’s creative and thought processes. It is evident in the way she approaches her works. Franziska ably optimizes her abilities in drawing—although not towards photographic realism, which requires a high level of draftsmanship. Fransizka’s paintings appear with a visual style that emphasizes upon metaphors. They are mostly stylized with Eastern visual atmospheres—evident in the traces of Persian and Indian miniature paintings that have always been her inspiration. However, on the other hand, these works still come across as works created by a Western hand—a Western artist—because they are free from any drawing acrobatics; instead, they demonstrate a very personal visual uniqueness. Her paintings appear free, as though weightlessly flowing, and confidently made. Thus, Fransizka’s works

Secara visual narasi dalam lukisan-lukisan Franziska bersandar pada bahasa realis, namun di sisi lain ada kode-kode visual yang tampil melampaui realisme. Sebagai contoh, dalam lukisan Blessed Business sosok manusia yang besar menandakan sosok yang penting, yang memberikan restu pada sosok-sosok yang lebih kecil—tampak seperti pengusaha. Hal ini merupakan pengaruh dari miniature painting dan metode visual yang banyak kita jumpai dalam seni rupa tradisi. Dualisme juga terasa pada narasi karya-karya Franziska yang umumnya bergerak antara dua kemungkinan, utopia dan dystopia, antara optimisme dan keputusasaan, antara kebaikan dan keburukan. Aspek destruksi dari kapitalisme adalah situasi persaingan bebas: pihak yang kuat memangsa pihak yang lemah: seperti hukum rimba: kehadiran sosok harimau dalam beberapa karya Franziska bisa jadi merefleksikan hal itu. Melihat tokoh-tokoh manusia yang memangsa manusia lain, seperti tampak pada karya Educational Dynamic dan Softened Brain jelas merepresentasikan sistem kapital. Sosok-sosok dalam lukisan Franziska memang kebanyakan mewakili sosok penguasa lalim dan bobrok dan sosok yang menjadi korbannya. Namun ada pula narasi yang netral atau cenderung positif seperti dalam karya The Good One. Dari narasi karya-karta tersebut kita dapat merangkai kemungkinan makna dari karya-karya Franziska. Sebagai cuplikan, ada bagian-bagian dan latar belakang yang memang tidak hadir langsung pada karya-karya Franziska. Demikian pula harapan-harapan utopis Franziska bisa jadi tak tampak pada karyanya. Namun jika berbincang dengan Franziska mengalirlah segala kepedulian dan harapannya. Salah satu hal paling penting

appear authentic, with a unique visual identity that is truly recognizable as hers. Visually, the narrations in Franziska’s paintings hinge upon a realist’s lexicon, yet, there are also visual codes that transcend realism. For instance, in Blessed Business, the large-sized person seen giving his blessings to smaller figures appears to be a business mogul of some sort—his size indicating his perceived importance. This painting is influenced by miniature paintings and visual methods usually encountered in traditional art forms. This sort of dualism is also evident in the narratives of her other works that tend to move between two possibilities: utopia and dystopia, optimism and despair, virtue and vice. Capitalism’s destructive aspects appear in the instances of free competition, where the strong preys upon the weak; the law of the jungle, so to speak, reflected by the tigers in several of her works. See also several human figures preying on other humans, as in Educational Dynamic and Softened Brain, clearly representing the capitalist system. The figures in Franziska’s paintings tend to represent despotic depraved rulers and their victims. However, there are also neutral figures, or even positive ones, as in The Good One. And thus, we can begin to piece together the meaning that we might be able to construe from Franziska’s paintings. As fragments, there are certain parts or backgrounds that are not immediately visible in Franziska’s works. Likewise, Franziska’s utopic hopes and dreams may not be immediately discernible, either. However, in conversations, all of her concerns and hopes will quickly flow forth. One of the most important things for Franziska is education. Even here, we can clearly see Franziska’s dualistic perception concerning the connection, or relationship, between capitalism and education. In her opinion, the quality of education determines a graduate’s ability to compete within a capitalist’s system. On the other hand, if we do not agree with

Atau di sisi lain, jika tak setuju dengan kapitalisme maka pendidikan yang baik memberikan modal untuk dapat mengantisipasi dampak buruk kapitalisme, dengan “melunakkannya” atau mencari alternatif lain, setidaknya dalam skala personal atau keluarga. Tanpa pendidikan yang baik, maka hanya akan dihasilkan masyarakat yang mudah dijadikan mangsa oleh kapitalisme. Franziska menurut saya bukan seniman yang menentang kapitalisme, namun dia sangat waspada terhadap sistem ekonomi tersebut. Bisa jadi dalam beberapa hal dia memang menolak bagian-bagian negatif dari sistem tersebut. Hal itu menjadi sikap hidupnya seharihari. Sepengamatan saya Franziska adalah sosok yang berani hidup cukup spartan. Meninggalkan kenyamanan hidup dalam ruang-ruang urban di negaranya, dan tinggal di pinggiran kota Yogya. Saat ini, tampaknya berkesenian adalah aktifitas yang paling penting bagi Franziska. Berkarya bagi Franziska memberikan banyak hal baginya. Berkarya adalah cara Franziska berdialog dengan dirinya sendiri. Berkarya adalah jalan baginya untuk berkomentar tentang situasi dan kondisi lingkungannya. Dia ingin karya-karyanya membangkitkan kesadaran pada pemirsanya mengenai pokok soal yang direpresentasikannya. Namun pada akhirnya yang paling penting bagi Franziska adalah bahwa karya-karyanya dapat memberikan nutrisi subtil bagi pemirsa. Pada bagian akhir ini Franziska bicara mengenai tawaran apresiasi untuk pemirsa, tidak pada konten tapi pada aspek estetik. Bagaimanapun Franziska sadar bahwa dia menampilkan karya seni, bukan sekadar protes atau kritik. Itu sebabnya dia juga menggarap karya-karya tiga dimensi yang lebih didasari oleh kebutuhan ekspresi estetik. Penggayaan karya-karya tiga dimensi itu

capitalism, then we can see how good education can help a person anticipate the ill-influence of capitalism, by “softening it” or seeking other alternatives, at least on a personal or familial scale. Without good education, society will only become easy prey for capitalism. I think, Franziska is not an artist who is [blatantly] against capitalism. She is someone who is very cautious of that economic system. It may be that she truly rejects the negative aspects of this system, in several instances. This is her daily outlook. Based on my observation, I can say that Franziska is someone who dares to live sparsely. She has abandoned the comforts of the urban spaces of her own country, choosing instead to live on the outskirts of Yogyakarta. Currently, it seems that art has become the most important activity in Franziska’s daily life. For Franziska, creating has given her many things. Creating is her way to set up a dialog with herself. Creating is a way for her to comment on the situations and conditions around her. She wants her works to spark an awareness in her audience, especially on the subject matter she is representing. Yet, in the end, the most important thing for her is that her works can provide a subtle nutrition for her audience. On this last part, Franziska tries to invite appreciation from her audience, not through content, but through aesthetic aspects. In the end, Franziska is aware that she is presenting works of art, not mere protests or critiques. And this is why she has also created three-dimensional works that are mostly based on the needs for aesthetic expression. Her three-dimensional works are stylistically similar to her paintings, in the form of soft sculptures created using sewn canvas as the main material. As with her paintings, these soft sculptures are very unique, often resembling mutants or creatures. Franziska titled her exhibition, Place the King in the Right Position. The King in question may be a metaphor with a variety of possible

Sesunggunya Raja yang dimaksud oleh Franziska bisa merupakan metafor dan dengan berbagai kemungkinan makna. Hal itu juga terefleksikan dalam karyakarya Franziska. Raja bisa berarti penguasa dalam beberapa pengertian sekaligus. Saat ini kapitalisme bisa dinobatkan sebagai raja-diraja global, sebab kapitalisme mampu mengatur segala sesuatu di dunia ini sesuai kehendaknya. Raja juga bisa diwakili oleh para pemilik kapital, yang menjadi agen utama nasib masyarakat dunia. Demikian berlapis-lapis tingkatan raja, sampai akhirnya setiap orang, menurut Franziska sesugguhnya adalah raja bagi dirinya sendiri. Artinya, jika setiap orang sadar bahwa dirinya adalah miliknya paling utama, tentu dia dapat ikut bermain dan memiliki posisi tawar, sejauh dia memahami pola-pola kekuasaan yang berlaku. Sulit disangkal bahwa kapitalisme telah menjadi pemain utama dalam sistem global saat ini.

meanings. This is certainly reflected in her works. The King may mean “ruler” in a number of ways. Today, capitalism may be regarded as a global ruler, because of its ability to rule and govern everything everywhere in the world. According to Franziska, there are many layers of “kingship”, so much so that in the end everyone is actually his or her own ruler. If a person is aware how the Self is one’s foremost belonging, then that person will be able to take part in the “game” and claim a bargaining position, insofar as he or she is able to understand the prevailing patterns of power. It is difficult to deny that capitalism has become the lead actor in our global system. However, there are no shortage of people or groups that can show how capitalism will lead to a world-wide destruction. Capitalism, through a network of neo-liberalism, has caused the overexploitation of earth’s resources in its quest to satisfy global consumption. Certainly there are thoughts and movements that attempt to correct capitalism. There are substantial schools of thought and analyses that can demonstrate how, in the end, capitalism will only benefit a small group of people, and even then, only achievable through significant degradation of natural resources. A number of dire predictions

Namun tak kurang pula pihak yang dapat menunjukkan bagaimana kapitalisme akan membawa dunia pada kehancuran. Kapitalisme melalui jejaring neoliberalisme memang telah menyebabkan eksploitasi yang berlebih atas segala sumber yang ada di muka bumi ini, untuk memenuhi konsumsi masyarakat global. Tentu saja selalu ada pemikiran dan gerakan yang berupaya mengoreksi kapitalisme. Cukup banyak pemikiran dan analisis yang dapat menunjukkan betapa kapitalisme pada akhirnya hanya menguntungkan segelitir pemilik modal, dan itu harus dibayar melalui degradasi sumber daya alam. Berbagai ramalan buruk ke depan berkenaan dengan kapitalisme tentu saja bisa menjadi pemicu bagi banyak pihak untuk waspada pada sistem ekonomi kapitalisme yang saat ini menguasai dunia. Masalahnya, di Indonesia kesadaran mencari alternatif atau sikap kritis terhadap sistem kapital tersebut bisa dikatakan absen. Situasi global terakhir merupakan babak terakhir dari perjalanan manusia. Namun cerita manusia dari awal peradaban sampai saat ini tidak lain tidak bukan adalah: mengenai upaya manusia untuk saling menguasai. Sejarah perjalanan manusia tak lain adalah perjalanan segelintir manusia yang berkuasa dalam menentukan nasib sebagian besar manusia lain: rakyat jelata. Catatan sejarah kurang lebih merupakan catatan mengenai segelintir penguasa menentukan sejarah dunia. Saat ini, di penghujung perjalanan manusia, situasinya kurang lebih sama. Segala kemajuan yang dibuat manusia tampaknya selalu berbanding lurus dengan kehancuran yang menyertainya. Kemajuan teknologi informasi, alih-alih menyebarkan kebaikan, namun lebih mudah menyebarkan kerusakan. Pengrusakan alam semakin parah, dengan hasil anomali cuaca karena global warming. Kekerasan antara bangsa, agama (bahkan sesama agama), ras, etnis terus berlanjut. Jurang antara kelompok kaya dan miskin semakin melebar, baik antara negara maupun kelompok sosial. Penjajahan

concerning capitalism may trigger a wariness about the capitalistic economy ruling the world today. Unfortunately, Indonesia still lacks any attempt to seek alternatives or to take a critical stance against capitalism. The most recent global situation is the final act in the journey of humanity. However, the story of mankind—from the beginning of civilization until today—is none other than a story of mankind’s attempt to rule over one another. The history of humanity is none other than the history of the journeys made by a few powerful people to determine the fate of many, those of the commoners. Historical records are mostly records of how these few rulers turned the global tide. Today, at the end of humanity’s journey, the situation remains mostly the same. All of humanity’s progress is proportional to its attendant destruction. Rather than spreading goodwill, progress in information technology seems to facilitate the spread of destruction. Nature is further degraded, causing weather anomalies through global warming. Acts of violence perpetrated amongst different nations and different religions (even within the same faith), amongst diverse races and ethnicities continue. The gap between the haves and the have-nots only widen, either across nations or across social groups. The subjugation of fellow men does not abate. Colonialism and exploitation through economic power has become the most visible reality, spreading and seeping into all corners of the world.

Franziska adalah seniman yang memiliki semangat dan pemikiran untuk mencari alternatif, setidaknya dari sikap hidupnya sendiri. Franziska ingin menjadi raja bagi dirinya sendiri, tak ingin mudah kalah oleh gempuran prinsip-prinsip kapital. Hal ini menjadi dasar dari misi kesenian Franziska. Keyakinan tersebut yang menjadikan pendorong utama dan bahan bakar bagi intensitas berkeseniannya. Dia bergerilya secara mandiri. Franziska adalah penganut perubahan kecil atau sedikit demi sedikit. Misi tersebut disampaikan melalui karya-karyanya dan menjadi gaya hidup yang diyakininya dengan rasa bahagia.

We are aware of these things. However, we seem to lack the courage to change the situation, or to even begin to change it. Franziska is an artist who has the desire and the thought to seek alternatives, if only in her own lifestyle and attitudes. She wishes to become her own ruler, not easily defeated by capitalist principles. This is the basis of Franziska’s artistic mission. Franziska Fennert tumbuh di Jerman bagian timur, di kota Rostock, sebuah kota pelabuhan di tepi Lautan Baltik. Saat ia berusia lima tahun, Franziska beserta kedua orangtuanya pindah ke tempat yang sangat terpencil, ke sebuah rumah di tengah hutan. Suatu tempat yang sedikitnya mengingatkan kita akan adegan-adegan dari cerita rakyat Jerman (“Marchen”). Rumah ini berlokasi di hutan yang dikelilingi pepohonan dengan bermacam fauna hutan seperti rusa dan babi liar hidup di sekitarnya.

Franziska Fennert had grown up in the Eastern part of Germany, in the town of Rostock, a harbor town at the Baltic Sea. At the age of five years she had moved from there with her parents to some very remote place, - to a lonely house in the middle of the forest, a place that reminds a little of scenes from well known old German folk tales (“Märchen”), located in the forest surrounded by trees with many forest animals like deer and wild pigs living around that place.

During the time of German Romanticism folk tales and legends had been collected among others by the brothers Grimm who had published their famous collection of German “Märchen”. Such books had become household items, children were read the stories before they went to sleep.

The German forest became a synonym for the German soul, for that deep connection of the Germans with their natural surroundings. The trees represented the mystifying power of nature. The forest was symbolized by a strong emotional imagery that was incorporated into myths, suggesting mystery, paths into the dark, forbidden areas inhabited by fairies and gnomes and other supernatural beings. An imaginary zone that is full of dangers, but that also attracts curiosity, inspiring fantasies and challenging for adventures. An ideal place for an artist to grow up as a child, to shape her creativity and imagination… In her later years Franziska Fennert had kept this sense of adventure, traveling alone to foreign countries, seeking something different from her previous experiences, or new challenges. In the Romantic tales the motif of the journey is often used, the heroes (or heroines) leave their original place, mostly by walking, looking for something else, or striving for happiness. Some of these sojourners or wanderers in these tales reach their goal, or discovered the ideals they were looking for, - others failed, went back or never finished their quest.

Another source of Franziska Fennert’s imagination is literature and philosophy, citing Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz as her favorite philosopher. She told about the library of her grandfather where she found among other books legends and fairy tales, and also “The Library of World Literature” which contained novels of famous writers from many different countries. She said: “What could you do in the middle of a forest? There wasn’t much other entertainment available… “.Reading took her to a parallel world of myths and imagination. Literary Influences The Russian writers impressed her most, among them Dostoevsky, Turgenjew and Tolstoy. But also the renowned Post-Soviet writer Victor Pelevin who is known for his imaginative style and his preference for Eastern philosophy (especially Zen) and bizarre, yet vivid tales about monsters that are supposed to shake the reader’s mind of reality (“The Sacred Book of the Werewolf”). After having read the Russian novels she still feels certain sympathy for Russia and/or Russian culture, later leading her path to appreciate Russian arts, like icons and naïve

paintings or Marc Chagall. She says that the animals in these paintings looked so alive to her as if somebody had given a real soul to these figures. Looking at the icon paintings which originally were in use as tools for meditation and praying always touched her. They are an important and deeply spiritual expression from the East. Franziska Fennert’s interest in miniature painting had also been inspired by her reading of “My Name is Red”, a novel of the Turkish Nobel prize winner Orhan Pamuk who describes in that novel the characters and the views of life of the Ottoman miniature painters. Orhan Pamuk tells in very detailed stories about the encounter of Western and Eastern art coming to Constantinople and evoking a kind of cultural clash. The miniature painters react with confusion and jealousy towards these foreign influences, but they feel at the same time admiration and respect for these new realist techniques of portraiture and painting perspectives. But they feel also proud of their own art tradition that has been influenced formerly by Chinese painting, coming through to them from Iran after the Mongol invasion. Upcoming fears about the new Western competitors are a frequent topic in the debates among the miniature painters.

The Quest for the Form

Her decision to study arts and to become a painter was guided by the wish to look for something that she considers as “original” and “transcendent”. When she talks about art generally, she refers to the Russian icons as one of the most powerful influences in the beginning of her career as an artist. (Some if this influence is still visible in her recent paintings, for example the stylized view of the faces of her figures, holding an atmosphere of persons sunk into their inner spheres and thoughts, like guarding some mystery.)

In Chinese ink and landscape paintings she found freedom and concentration. and Japanese wood prints. During her first long stay in Yogyakarta she had studied Batik and wayang painting and other Javanese art styles, collecting more knowledge and adding to her continuing fascination with Asian arts and cultures.

Franziska memahami karya-karyanya sebagai suatu sumbangsih (atau penghormatan) bagi seni lukis non-Barat. Ia terutama menyukai dimensi dari lukisan dengan teknik datar (flat), dengan perspektif hanya ditengarai oleh penggunaan pulasan bermacam warna. Pada karya-karya terbarunya ini ada banyak rujukan terhadap berbagai gaya (pengaruh) yang telah disebutkan di atas. Namun demikian, Franziska tentunya tidak mengakui diri sebagai seorang ahli dalam teknik lukisan Cina ataupun teknik lainnya yang diinspirasi oleh elemenelemen dari beragam seni rupa Asia. She understands her works as a dedication (or homage) to non-Western painting. Especially she likes how dimensions are painted in a flat technique, perspectives only indicated through the different shades of color. In her current works many allusions to these aforementioned styles can be found. She does certainly not claim that she is highly skilled in the techniques of Chinese painting or any other kind of technique that is inspired by elements from different Asian arts. Her studies of Asian arts she considers just as a starting point to find her own visual language to show what is important to her in the long history of artistic, philosophical, political and economic exchange in the relationships between the parts of world that were once signified or labeled as “East” and “West”. She combines all these different influences to create her subjective and personal view of the world, shaping her private universe filled with deep symbolic contents and allusions. With her artworks she wants to open a window for seeing other perspectives and different angles without to forget where these ideas came from. It is the continuation of dialogue between East and West (what ever these words still mean in the times of ongoing globalization), a dialogue that has begun by many generations of artists before her without ever coming to an end. Romanticism in Modern Times Franziska Fennert never felt drawn to modern

In a certain sense this attitude corresponds with the Romantics’ view who – like Friedrich Schlegel, one of the most important German Romantic thinkers - struggled against modernity. Generally, Germany has a reputation as a very regulated, orderly, efficient and well-managed society. Franziska Fennert mentioned to feel discontent with the ways German society has taken. She is concerned about a loss of values, missing a sense of purpose that goes beyond individual ambition. The Romantic attitude towards modernity has been described as follows: “Romantic sensibility reflects an experience of loss. In modern capitalist reality something precious has been lost, at the level of both individuals and humanity at large. Certain essential human values have been alienated – qualitative values as opposed to the purely quantitative exchange value that predominates in modernity. This alienation, keenly sensed, is often experienced as exile: in defining the Romantic spirit, Friedrich Schlegel speaks of the soul ‘‘under the willows of exile’’ “ (Robert Sayre and Michael Loewy: 2005:435) Nostalgia for the lost paradise is generally accompanied by a quest for what has been lost,

Hagemoni, Relasi Kekuasaan dan Bentukbentuk Simbolisnya

Hegemony, Power Relations and their Symbolical Forms

Meskipun secara permukaan karya Franziska Fennert tampak halus dan lembut, namun hadir sebuah konsep di balik narasi visualnya yang menyertakan hubungan antara Timur dan Barat dalam kerangka politis dan historis. Hubungan antara Timur dan Barat dalam hal ini senantiasa dibayang-bayangi oleh sejarah kolonialisme dan imperialisme, bahkan hingga kini. Peperangan kolonialisme, penindasan, dan eksploitasi; merupakan sisi kejam dari hegemoni yang didirikan oleh kekuatan Barat di Asia (dan tentunya di berbagai belahan dunia lainnya). Hegemoni ini mewariskan pula tradisi diskriminasi rasialis di tengah rakyat Asia yang masih terjadi, bahkan setelah kekuatan kolonial runtuh. Globalisasi yang terjadi kini juga dapat diartikan sebagai bentuk baru siasat para kaum imperialis.

Although the surface of Franziska Fennert’s looks soft and mild there is a concept behind her visual narrative that puts the relations between East and West in a political and historical context. The relationships between East and West have been darkened by the history of colonialism and imperialism until today. Colonial wars, oppression and exploitation were the cruel side of the hegemony that was established by Western powers in Asia (and certainly, in other parts of the world, too). This hegemony included racialist discrimination of Asian peoples that did not end after the colonial Empires had collapsed. Globalization now could be understood as a new version of the imperialist strategies.

Dengan figur sang Raja (pada karyanya), Franziska telah memilih suatu metafora atau petunjuk dalam menjelaskan hubungan antara beragam kekuatan yang ada. Ia juga mempertanyakan apakah hierarki dan hegemoni ini telah tertoreh demikian dalam dan luas ke dalam benak umat manusia masa kini— seperti suatu arketip. Di seluruh penjuru dunia pergumulan untuk kekuasaan dan upaya untuk mendominasi dapat ditemui dalam berbagai bentuk dan ukuran. With the figure of the king Franziska Fennert has chosen a metaphor or a clue for explaining these power relationships. She is also asking if these hierarchies and hegemonies are deeply and universally engraved into the human mind, like an archetype. All over the world the struggle for power and striving for domination is to be found in varying forms and degrees. The king is an ancient model of leadership, going back to religiously legitimized forms of the execution of power and authority. Famous examples are the Son of Heaven, the Chinese emperor who was given the Mandate of Heaven, or the Emperor of Japan who was revered as a god. James Frazer in his “Golden Bough” spoke of the Sacred King who was related to vegetation and fertility, responsible for good harvests and the well being of his people. When catastrophes like floods, droughts or earthquakes occurred, these natural disasters were considered as the failure of the king who would be replaced as soon as possible or, in the words of James Frazer, sacrificed. Dynasties were not supposed to last forever.

The structures of power are more complicated today, royal leaders depending on the will of elites, in many cases also the military, and the people.

This could be a traditional religious context, a local power struggle or even the relationships between genders, as it is shown in ”Place the King in the Right Position”.

Another important metaphor of power is the octopus which is according to Franziska Fennert the most intelligent animal species. The tentacles represent the long reaching arms of power, but this also a simile for unpredictable presence, because the octopus can reach out to all directions into unforeseeable ways. The octopus is still a very mysterious and miraculous creature, researched by marine biologists with the intention to find answers for the many unknown facts about this fascinating sea animal. According to research reports the octopus recognizes its environment through the neurons in the tentacles. Usually these neuron cells are only found in the brain of living beings. That means that the octopus thinks and feels through the extremities, having a much wider scope to detect what is happening around it, like a sonic radar system. Octopus is also a master of camouflage, being able to change color and shape, even able to make itself invisible for protecting from enemies. The motif of the octopus is visualized in painting and as well as installation (“Fusion to raise an equal conscious mind”)

Mahluk semacam gurita adalah simbol yang tepat dan anggun bagi kekuasaan, karena kekuasaan tidaklah perlu ditonjolkan, meskipun tentunya ia perlu berubah sesekali untuk mempertahankan dominasi miliknya. Pemikir posmodern Michel Foucault menggambarkan diskursus kekuasaan sebagai suatu panoptikum (alat yang dapat menangkap atau melihat semua benda sekaligus), yang dapat memantau dan mengatur dari luar sistem di setiap saat dan dari setiap penjuru tempat.

Setelah terkuaknya aktivitas spionase global Amerika Serikat oleh Edward Snowden, ada lebih banyak gambaran jernih mengenai bagaimana cara kerja dan mekanisme kekuasaan saat ini. Seperti halnya tentakel-tentakel gurita, yang berupaya menangkap tiap carik informasi yang ada, kekuasaan memiliki arti mengumpulkan sebanyak mungkin informasi. This kind of creature is a perfect and sophisticated symbol for power, for power does not need to be exposed, but it could take other forms to old its grip on the dominated. The post-modern thinker Michel Foucault described the discourse of power with the example of the panopticum, where everything could be observed and controlled from outside at any time and every possible angle. Another important term in Foucault’s theory of power is the “episteme”, modules of knowledge that are implanted into the mind of the society, so controlling the society from inside by way of dominating ideas and thoughts; these modules could be transformed into images, so visual media like arts have an important role in this process of establishing and transferring of power. The society follows these directives which are accepted as common norms and not reflected or directly opposed, like naturally given. . ‘Power in the substantive sense, “le” pouvoir, doesn’t exist…power means…a moreor-less organised, hierarchical, co-ordinated

(It should be remarked here that the post-modern theory of Foucault was very fashionable for a while in academic circles (even until today) in the United States, dominating the discourse on power. But there are certainly other theories of power which give different perspectives on this highly debated topic.) After the revelations of Edward Snowden about the global spying activities of the USA there is a much clearer picture to be seen how the mechanisms of power work now, just like the tentacles of the octopus, catching up every piece of information that is available. The power consists in collecting as much information as possible. The data-greedy technology provided through the internet is fed with millions of data every second. Other paintings by Franziska Fennert refer to the legacy of colonialism, “Sitting on the spirit of the past”, showing a meditating Asian person sitting on the back of a ghost-like figure in grey-white color, indicating the problem of choice where to go, going back to the own roots, in the case that this is still possible, if not prevented by the ghost or spirit. There is also the dependence between nations – “Infusion” or “Indonesian Tiger”, turning to the questions of economic development and dependency, as well one of the legacies of colonialism and imperialism. 1 Interdependency exists in relationships between persons or co-workers, melted or fused together, unable to walk alone. (“Our plates are filled from the same source”; “Heavy decision”). The domestic sphere appears in the kitchen, where a huge figure of woman preparing rolls seems to be pleased to wrap some male figures into the dough for later consumption.

The red thread among all these paintings seems to the wish to consume each other, even a kind of mutual consumption, the final incorporation of the dominated into the own body, to absorb all energy from it like a parasite. The painting “Just eat it-just beat it” depicts faces with different colors, with open mouths to devour greedily the bars of gold. The different colors of the faces imply the universality of greed. Where to Go A former project of Franziska Fennert was titled U(dys)topia (2010), indicating by this title that two directions are possible: the more hopeful way towards a better future, a living in peace and harmony, and the more negative perspective, which means disaster and chaos. Humanity is called to be conscious of choice which way to go, although it might be implied that these two scenarios are only the different sides of the same medal. Here Franziska Fennert relates to her favourite philosopher Gottried Leibniz, who once described the world as the best of all possible – he also acknowledged the presence of evil in this world. (For this view he was ridiculed by the philosopher of Enlightenment, Voltaire, who wrote his “Candide” in response to Leibniz). Interestingly both philosophers –Voltaire as well as Leibniz shared an interest in China. Leibniz had analyzed the famous “Book of Changes” (I Ching) in his mathematical theories. He had a great respect for Chinese philosophy, although finally he perceived the European culture as superior, due to his religious background in Christianity. According to him Europeans were surpassed by the Chinese in practical philosophy, by which he meant the adaptation of ethics and politics to contemporary life. (Mungello:2009) So it seems that it is possible to find a way of exchange between cultures, in the case that both sides feel respected and acknowledge fully each other in their specific perceptions of explaining the world. .

Orientalism in the Arts Since Edward Said had published his book on Orientalism in 1972, the debate about Westerners view the Easterners (meaning other, non-European cultures, subsumed under the term Oriental) is ongoing. The East is constructed as the “Other”, portraying the East as something to be feared or desired, imposing Western imaginations on other cultures with the final intention to dominate them, legitimized by the supposed dangers arising from there. The East was painted in a seductive manner, evoking desirability, but actually reflecting like a mirror the inner motivations of Westerners, shaping their own identity seen through these imaginary perceptions of the “Other”. Orientalism once was used for art that was influenced by non-European motifs (Delacroix for example), exposing a distorted image of other cultures. At the same time Orientalism represented the science of experts concerning the Orient and Islamic culture that came under heavy attacks since the publication of “Orientalism” by Said who analyzed the writings of famous historians and researchers of Islam (writers and artists as well) in critical perspective. This book was discussed controversially, but after decades of debate there had been a change in the views of the Orient, at least in academic circles. On the popular cultural level the stereotyped images of the Orient are still in use and widespread (Hollywood movies as an outstanding example). Edward Said unfortunately left many questions open, for example the problem how the Orient could be perceived in a right way. Is it even possible to do so? What means Orient anyway, so many different cultures and histories subsumed under this term. There is an essentialism implied in Said’s theory, as if one true or authentic image would exist. Of course, there are always many “truths”, depending on the point of view in time and space where this view takes from. 2

Goethe remarked: “I am more and more convinced that poetry is the universal possession of mankind, revealing itself everywhere and at all times in hundreds and hundreds of men. . . . I therefore like to look about me in foreign nations, and advise everyone to do the same. National literature is now a rather unmeaning term; the epoch of world literature is at hand, and everyone must strive to hasten its approach.” The idea of world literature could be applied to the arts, too. There has always been a steady flow of exchange between cultures, designs and visualizations wandering around the world, taken by artists who felt attracted by these new inputs, although the designs were put in a completely different context that was no more authentically connected with the original. Elements were taken from everywhere, fragments were integrated into a new style. Picasso did it, the Surrealists were excited by arts from the Southern Sea and this movement continues until today, Today this movement of borrowing or even appropriation is going into both directions,

Gagasan sastra dunia dapat diaplikasikan pula pada seni rupa. The centers of economical and political power move steadily more to the East, countries like China and India have transformed into big and very influential players on the global scale.

Semenjak berakhirnya Perang Dingin dan runtuhnya Uni Soviet, Amerika telah mengambil peran sebagai penguasa-super tunggal yang kini tampak semakin melemah. Saat ini kita menyimak pembentukan dunia yang multikutub dengan pusat kekuasaan yang majemuk. Perubahan di lingkaran politik ini juga berparalel dan tercermin di dunia seni rupa global. Ledakan seni rupa kontemporer Cina telah membuka kesempatan bagi pemain-pemain baru. Kandidat selanjutnya di antaranya mungkin India dan bahkan Indonesia. Jalur Sutera baru, dahulu jalan menuju Eropa dari Asia untuk mengirimkan barang-barang seperti kain sutera dan berbagai rancangan, dan juga berbagai gagasan kini menjangkau dari Cina hingga ke pelabuhan Duisburg di Jerman. Koneksi baru kini dibangun. Pada kunjungannya ke pelabuhan Duisburg di Jerman, presiden Cina Xi Jinping mempromosikan pentingnya Jalur Sutera antara Eropa dan Asia, untuk memberikan keuntungan perdagangan di kedua wilayah tersebut. Cina telah dihubungkan dengan Jerman melalui jalur kereta internasional Chongqing-Xinjiang-Eropa (Asia Times: 23 Mei, 2014). Kini adalah saatnya melanjutkan koneksi fisik ini melalui pertukaran kebudayaan. Now we see the emerging shape of a multi-polar world with different power centers. These changes in the political sphere have been paralleled and reflected in the global art scene. The boom of contemporary Chinese art has opened the field for new players, among the next candidates maybe India or even Indonesia. The new Silk Road, once the way to Europe from Asia to transport goods like silk cloths and designs and along with them ideas is reaching now from China to the port of Duisburg in Germany. New connections are to be built. During his visit to the port of Duisburg in Germany, the Chinese president Xi Jinping advocated the need for the Silk Road connecting Europe and Asia, so as to benefit markets of both regions. China is already connected to Germany by the Chongqing-Xinjiang-Europe international railway. (Asia Times: May 23, 2014) It is to be seen how this will be followed by cultural transmissions.

Sudut Pandang “Place the King in the Right Place” adalah sebuah perbincangan dan pertukaran pada tataran yang adil dan sejajar, dan bukannya mengenai penguasaan atau pemanfaatan budaya lain. Saat ditempatkan ke dalam sebuah dialog antar kebudayaan, karya-karya Franziska ini mampu memposisikan ulang seni rupa pada tempat yang semestinya: sebagai jembatan sejati dan cara yang efisien untuk berkomunikasi. Franziska Fennert dengan kepeduliannya terhadap arah gerak dunia bukanlah seorang penganut Neo-Romantik, dan tentunya karya-karyanya bukanlah campuran eklektik antara berbagai kebudayaan di seluruh penjuru dunia namun sebuah pilihan yang disadari bersandar pada alasan-alasan filosofis dan artistik. Dengan demikian Franziska menyodorkan cermin di hadapan khalayak dan bertanya kepada mereka di mana dan siapa anda dalam gambaran utuh ini. Ia telah membawa kita dalam sebuah petualangan sepanjang Jalur Sutera dan kini kembali ke Yogyakarta.

Outlook “Place the King in the Right Place” is about dialogue and exchange on equal levels. Not about dominating or appropriating other cultures. When these works are put into the context of an open intercultural dialogue, they could place the role of art into the right position again: as a true mediator and efficient means of communication. Franziska Fennert with her concerns about the ways the world goes is no Neo-Romantic, and certainly her works are not an eclectic multi-cultural remix, but a conscious choice based on philosophical and artistic reasons. In this way she holds the mirror in front of the viewer and asks where and who you are in this whole picture. She has taken us on a journey along the Silk Road and has now returned to Yogyakarta. About the Artist Franziska Fennert Franziska Fennert is a German artist, who works mainly with painting and drawing, but also 3-dimensional, whilst nurturing a personal relationship with Asia. Having graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts Dresden, Germany in 2009, she finalized her post-graduate studies in the class of Prof. Kerbach, with agrant of the Free State of Saxony(Landesstipendium des Freistaates Sachsen) in summer of 2011. Her first contact with China was in 2007 with a study trip from the Academy in Dresden. Deep impressed from the rich culture and especially the ink paintings she took part in calligraphy courses and started to merge the new knowledge with her own cultural and art historical background. In 2008 she undertook several projects in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, including a solo-exhibition in the Museum Affandi. On return she became the co-projectmanager for U(Dys)topia The emergence of myths, fairytales and legends in contemporary Indonesia and Germany 2010, which was exhibited in the Gallery of HfBK Dresden and Freies Museum Berlin. In 2011 she co-managed the second part of the project named CROSSING SIGNS 14 artists from Indonesia and Germany experiencing the ‚liminal zone‘, which was exhibited in Taman Budaya Yogyakarta and Galeri Nasional Jakarta. She is the first chairman of the 2012 founded German-Asian-art association COVER.e.V. With this organisation and the special effort of her colleague Yini Tao, the Chinese-German exhibition COLLAPSEAnother perspective of examining cultural collision was co-managed and realized in Shanghai 2013. She intends to continue developing international projects in the future.

In her own artistic work Franziska Fennert connects traditional Asian art and philosophy with western art understanding and current social and political issues. In 2013 she realized, with the support of ARTSociates Lawagwangi and the Federal Foreign Office of Germany, the interactive permanent installation project VISION OF A SOCIAL EVOLUTION in Bandung, Indonesia. About my work My work nourishes itself from the fertile ground of fantastic traditions, fairytales and legends. In addition to this, the peculiar characteristics of foreign customs - particularly that of eastern cultures - provide a rich source of inspiration. Habitus, rites and religious mysticism open a wide domain for dreaming. This inner world is a the object of the portrayed figures that are mostly presented with their eyes closed. They make meaningful gestures: they appear to be engrossed in another sphere. All of my works are based on my drawings which I find to be a very intimate means of expression. Feelings are directly communicated merely by means of graduation of light and darkness and the intensity of line. Indeed even my three dimensional works emanate from my drawings. Their extended dimensions create a larger capacity for experiencing that which is displayed. Examples of art that inspires me include the portrayals of inner worlds by Robert von Campin, medieval icons, Japanese woodblock prints with their breathtaking compositional dexterity as well as Chinese ink painting in it’s lively configuration of varigated brushwork. I am particularly impressed with the agility and love with which every element is treated in traditional Asian arts. It signals a very deep understanding of the rhythms of nature. My aim is that my artworks could give subtle nutrition to the contemplator.
