Abstract Man of sorrows on a console with an angel bust and with an inscription tablet from the Old Town City Hall in Prague was created by the Master of the Týn Calvary, which was shortly after the Hussite wars one of the most important sculptors in Prague. Despite of that his work remains permanently discussed by experts and here described work of art has previously been a subject of various hypotheses. Thanks to restoration works the authors had the opportunity to investigate whole sculpture in terms of materials analysis, which enabled to to confirm by scientific methods that all three parts form a coherent ensemble, created by the same master‘s workshop. In gilded areas of the angel bust a Zwishgold was sticked on a thin layer of boiled oil. In all incarnates an organic red lake pigment was found in particular, that was used instead of vermillion. The inscription tablet was studied for the first time and the presence of the oldest Gothic painting layers was here confirmed. key words: Master of the Týn Calvary, Man of sorrows from the Old Town City Hall in Prague, medieval polychrome sculpture, Zwischgold, red lakes
Introduction
The older a work of art we investigate, the more various its story is likely to be. One layer after another, we can unveil the story with a number of procedures and methods so that the resulting picture is as credible as possible. Putting together stories of medieval paintings and sculptures, which are not usually accompanied by many historical written resources, is a relatively very demanding discipline for researchers. Across various European countries there are only sporadic cases in which such works of art have been preserved in a more or less authentic condition and also in situ. Medieval fine art is the first chapter in the history of Europe’s ancient art and it includes the period of approximately seven centuries. One can hardly find a work or art from that period that has remained untouched and whose story is uneventful or uninteresting. This has been caused both by people and nature that, despite all human efforts,
can totally unexpectedly change the original intent and thus also the right perception of the work of art. Therefore visual and historical investigations are not sufficient and it is necessary to use additional scientific methods of research. In the conditions of the Czech Republic the degree of authenticity of late medieval works of art, equally as their preservation in situ, is fairly low. This results in fairly high requirements for expertise and responsibility of those who investigate or restore them. Particularly important is the team work, communication and openness, which make it possible to view the artwork from various aspects and make room for constructive discussion. Exactly in this manner it is possible to put together an undistorted and credible picture of the past of the concerned work of art. Much valuable information can be obtained particularly from its restoration. In the

restoration process a correctly compiled story of the work of art enables to look for an optimized way of its continuation and, on the contrary, its misunderstanding may result not only in its misinterpretation but also in an irreversible damage of the artwork as such. Therefore it is desirable to combine methods used in humanities and sciences and to look deeper in order to understand the story completely, i.e. to investigate in detail also the materials and techniques. Many controversial issues can be resolved with the assistance of an ever broadening potential of material analysis. Recently, particularly non-destructive methods have become more popular, which can be used even without any connection with restoration processes and without any physical intervention into the investigated work of art. The authors want to use an example of investigation of a Gothic polychrome sculpture to demonstrate how the view of a work of art may be transformed if we engage additional available methods of research. However, when we fail to take advantage of that potential we will get into a stalemate and without having verified data all we have left is de facto only a myth about the work of art. Even though the history of the polychrome sculpture may be now partly unveiled by non-destructive computer tomography, the study of the painting structure remains hidden in the details. Gothic polychromes that have survived effects of several centuries are often hidden under secondary layers, sometimes several centimeters thick, which results in the so-called “softening of the carving “. The oldest layers, however, may have been totally removed and individual parts of the statue may have been re-carved and modified to suit the taste of that particular time. As an example of usefulness of a detailed analysis we therefore submit results of the research, which have confirmed the time appurtenance of polychromes on three parts of a carving set of Man of sorrows from the Old Town City Hall in Prague. Man of sorrows on a console with an angel bust from the Old Town City Hall
The statue of Man of sorrows on a console with an angel bust and with a separate inscription tablet over it is permanently fixed on the eastern wall of the Old Council in the building of the Old Town City Hall in Prague (Fig. 1). Although the console and the statue of Man of sorrows on it are two separable parts, in terms of composition and iconography they form a homogenous set, which according to historical documents, was a part of the original Gothic decoration of the meeting room in the Old Town City Hall. The related literature has focused mainly on the Christ statue (Fig. 2), while the console has Location: Old Council of the Old Town City Hall in Prague. Basic technological data: carving, linden wood, carved backside, original polychrome, height of the Christ sculpture 125 cm, console height 76 cm, console width 60 cm, restored by T. Berger (2008-2010). The Latin inscription on the angel’s hands: Juste iudicate filii hominis. Inscription tablet ca. 90 x 30 cm (it was impossible to check the size), the original polychrome is documented on the incarnate of the hands, Latin inscription on three lines: Deus iudex iustus, fortis et paciens, misericors es miserator longanimis et multum misericors, quia misericordia superexaltat iudicum. Transcription of the Latin inscription according to Chlíbec J., Štefanová-Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Pražská řezbářská dílna předhusitské doby (Master of the Týn Calvary: Prague carving workshop from the pre-Hussite period), exhibition catalogue, Prague 1990, p. 35. been investigated by researchers only for the sake of completeness or entirely separately. The separate investigation of the two parts was based on a stylecritical analysis in which researchers came to the conclusion that they were created at different times. The advanced style of the console suggested its dating in 1450 to 1460 and, on the contrary, the carving of Christ demonstrated features typical for the early 15th century which resulted in a construct that the console was only a younger complement of a high artistic quality. The turning point in the evaluation of the carving came in 2004 in a monograph on the Master of the Týn Calvary by M. Bartlová, who used a style-critical analysis to conclude that the console was made at the same time as Christ and classified both the parts into oeuvre of the above-mentioned Master. parts were created at the same time and, in contrast with the previous and in literature repeated conclusions, and a change in the datation to around 1440. The fundamental importance of the newly formulated concept of the work by the Master of the Týn Calvary consists in changing the perspective from which the artistic development in Bohemia in the post-Hussite period is seen. In the category of artworks from the first half of the 15th century the set of statues of the Old Town Christ as such represents a high artistic quality and at the time shortly after the Hussite wars the set, in which the Man of sorrows statue cannot deny the continuing tradition of the so-called in Czech Beautiful style (in English known as the International Gothic), turns out to be a contemporary work of art in the current European production. The console that serves as a decorative element bearing the Christ’s message to the councillors of the Old Town: “Juste iudicate filii hominis (Judge fairly, sons of man)!“, demonstrates features so advanced in terms of style that it had been dated in the past only after 1450 (Fig. 3). The angel’s bust attracts attention not only by its monumentality but also its sculpting quality and its sense for realism makes is comparable with works such as the Dangolsheim Madonna ascribed to Dutchman Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden (around 1460; Berlin, Staatliche Museen, Skulpturensammlung) (Fig. 4), who worked in Central Europe for a short period of time before his death, as late as in 1467-1473. Similar figural consoles can be found in sculptures by Petr Parléř (Petrus de Gemunden in Suevia) and in Franco–Flemish art. Franco–Flemish influences Juste iudicate filii hominis. Chlíbec J., Štefanová-Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Pražská řezbářská dílna předhusitské doby (Master of the Týn Calvary: Prague carving workshop from the pre-Hussite period), exhibition catalogue, Prague 1990, p. 35. From among the best known ones we should mention a console with a bust of a young woman from Cologne from ca. 1390; Cologne, Schnütgen-Museum, reg. No. K 127. Most recently in Fajt J. (ed.), Karel IV.: Císař z Boží milosti (Kultura a umění za vlády Lucemburků 1310 – 1437) (Charles IV: Emperor by the Grace of God (Culture and art under the reign of the Luxemburg family)), exhibition catalogue, Prague 2006, p. 393, Cat. No. 131. In this artistic circuit a console in the form of an angel bears e.g. Madonna with a child in the castle chapel in Châteaudun (around 1400). In the Central European region busts of angels and prophets with inscription strips form also consoles and pedestals for statues on a stone main altar in the parish church of St. Martin in Landshut, Lower Bavaria (1421). A motif of an angel-shaped console, this time with a coat of arms, was later used for the Madonna in the ambulatory of the Trier house (1462) by Dutchman Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden, who continued the Franco-Flemish traditions. Consoles in shape of angels in the Low Countries were found in the original decoration of the Brussels City Hall and there is also one console similar to the one in Prague in the chapel of Virgin Mary and St. Peter in the church of Virgin Mary on Dijle in Mechelen (angel with an inscription strip, 1472).

in the works by the Master of the Týn Calvary were confirmed by M. Bartlová who proposed that the Master, after his beginnings “in the western-influenced circle of artists in the second stage of the Czech Beautiful style around 1410“, may have completed his education around 1430 at the court of Sigmund of Luxemburg in Buda.10 She put the main work by the Prague anonymous author of the Týn Calvary (1436-1439) in connection with a donation made by the Emperor Sigmund of Luxemburg to the Church of Our Lady before Týn as a settlement with the Utraquist majority.11 She anticipated that the workshop continued operating even after the Sigmund’s hurried departure from Prague in 1437 and his subsequent death. According to M. Bartlová, the statue of Man of sorrows along with the console were created only after 1439 when, after the death of the king Albert (Albrecht) of Habsburg, there was a period of interregnum and the sovereignty of Prague naturally increased. The assumption that reflections of the early Flemish realism link the works by the Master of the Týn Calvary with the environment of the Sigmund’s court in Buda seems to be fairly feasible for the Prague sculpture immediately after the Hussite wars. The link between the set of sculptures of the Old Town Man of sorrows made by the Master of the Týn Calvary and the works by monumental masons at the court of Sigmund of Luxemburg in Buda has not been excluded even by their mutual style-critical comparisons.12 His training and work in this circle of artists at the court is fairly probable, based on a number of comparable stylistic and formal features. This possibility has been confirmed also by coincidences with works made by his contemporary, Hans Multscher of Ulm, which reflect related artistic development, combining Franco-Flemish traditions and early Flemish realism. Based on the hypothesis created by M. Bartlová the Franco-Flemish traditions were well known to the Master from Prague, where he had come from.13 This opinion is based, among other things, also on the figural picturing of Man of sorrows, which is characteristic for the broader Central European region. The Flemish innovations were probably mediated to him by his colleagues from Buda, particularly those from the broad area of Rhineland, as it was them who 10 Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské (Master of the Týn Calvary: Czech sculptor of the Hussite period), Prague 2004, p. 97. 11 Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské (Master of the Týn Calvary: Czech sculptor of the Hussite period), Prague 2004, p. 35-36. 12 See Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské (Master of the Týn Calvary: Czech sculptor of the Hussite period), Prague 2004, p. 87-90. 13 Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské (Master of the Týn Calvary: Czech sculptor of the Hussite period), Prague 2004. had often had direct personal experience with them.14 Thus the Master of the Týn Calvary was able to bring to Prague the first reflections of the Flemish realism in the second half of 1430s. With the shifted datation of the work made by the Master of the Týn Calvary a new picture emerges also about the artistic development in Prague and about Man of sorrows as such, despite the fact that is has been continuously accompanied by professional arguments. Material investigation of polychromes on the set of sculptures called the Old Town Man of sorrows is one of the significant aspects of the ongoing professional discussion. The Man of sorrows polychrome had been restored under supervision of Bohuslav Slánský by the school of painting and conservation techniques at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, in 1950s.15 Even then the team of restorers pointed to “the beautiful implementation of the original polychrome on Christ“16 and described Gothic colored layers on the bust and in the inscription strip on the angel. However, the key role in the discussion belongs to the professional restoration made in the studio of the academic painter Tomáš Berger (20052010), which involved numerous material analyses of polychrome samples.17 One layer after another it started revealing a story different from that we had been used to. Already the initial restoration research made by T. Berger in 2005 exposed, apart from the original colored layer on a chalk base, a number of various color applications that, as he put it, “were 14 In the environment of the Buda workshop it is not possible to exclude the activity of the Brabant artist. not always qualified “.18 The surface was in the past spread over with a degrading semi-transparent brown layer; at the same time, the original polychrome was covered with a Baroque, relatively thick oil layer, which was preserved in fragments thanks to its incomplete removal. Visual investigations also showed a greengrey repaint. According to a restoration report from 200519, the polychrome on the carving manifested at least three stages of repairs. The angel’s wings were covered with a yellow-grey layer and after its removal the original bright yellow gilding appeared. In 2006 there was another restoration research by T. Berger, which contained results of investigations made by D. Pechová20 and demonstrated that, unlike on the Man of sorrows statute, the angel bust was not exposed to any significant repaints21 and that the preserved color substance is very likely associated with the original medieval color layer on the Man of sorrows. Also the performed X-ray images demonstrated that the color layer on the angel’s face was preserved compact while the color layer on the Christ’s face was only fragmental. The material investigation with instrumentatal methods in the ALMA laboratory in 2008 made it possible to prove congruity of samples from incarnates of the angel and Christ,22 which supports the conclusion made by M. Bartlová that the console and the Christ statue were created at the same time.
Material analysis to determine technological procedure in the sculptor workshop
The objective of the updating of additional analyses was to compare the polychrome on the console with the angel bust with the polychrome of the Christ 18 Berger T., Bolestný Kristus na konzole s andělem ze Staroměstské radnice v Praze (Man of sorrows on a console with an angel, Old Town City Hall in Prague), manuscript of restoration reports, Prague 2005; deposited in: National Heritage Institute, Local Professional Workplace in the Capital of Prague, archive of the documentation department, reg. statue, i.e. to investigate individual period similarities and differences. Therefore samples of the polychrome were taken again – from the Christ’s pedestal and Christ’s crown of thorns (green colors), samples of the paint on the angel’s and Christ’s hair (brown colors), gilding on the angel’s collar, hem of the Christ’s waist cloth decorated with notching and on the beading on the Christ’s pedestal. Also incarnate samples were taken from the angel and Christ, which had the same color shade. The individual samples were taken in the course of the restoration and in the case of incarnates from Christ and the angel they no more contained any repaint. At the end of the restoration additional samples were taken from letters of the Gothic minuscule and from the hands holding the inscription tablet above Christ. The binder of the original incarnate on Christ, which demonstrated unusual fluorescence, as well as colors in red lake used for painting of the blood, were analyzed in the laboratory of the Royal Institute for Cultural Heritage (IRPA/KIK) in Brussels.23 Samples for the analysis were taken by the restorer T. Berger.
Methods of material analysis
Fragments taken from the wooden polychrome sculpture were observed in the laboratory ALMA under stereoscope Leica S8 APO Stereozoom and subsequently embedded into polyester resin Neukadur. Polished sections were prepared on the Kompakt 1031 grinder. 21 microsamples were prepared for investigation with the optical microscope OLYMPUS BX-60. The observation was performed in white reflective light in combination with lateral illumination in a dark field and complemented with monitoring of luminescence of pigments and organic substances in incident UV radiation (Hg discharge lamp, radiation type UVA: 330–380 μm). The luminescence was monitored with a universal UV filter. The process was documented with a digital camera Olympus DP 70. In the IRPA/KIK laboratory the samples were embedded into acrylate resin Spofacryl and examined with the optical microscope AXIOPLAN (Zeiss) with UV and Vis illumination. The elemental analysis of the individual layers in the cross-section was performed in the Institute of Inorganic Chemistry of the Academy of Science of the Czech Republic, v. v. i., in Řež with the scanning electron microscope Philips XL30 CP at the working voltage 25 kV with the use of Robinson detector 23 Sanyová J., Správa laboratórnej štúdie organických látok vo farebnej vrstve polychromovanej sochy Bolestného Krista, Pražská radnica Report on a laboratory study of organic substances in the color layer of polychrome statue of the Man of sorrows, Prague City Hall in Prague), Brussels 2009.

of backscattered electrons (RBS) and EDAX detector of X-rays (SEM-EDX). Samples processed in the IRPA-KIK laboratory were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope Jeol 6300 at the working voltage 15 kV with the detector Si(Li) LINK (RX Pentafet Oxford Instrument). For identification of organic substances the ALMA laboratory used infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformation (FTIR) in combination with histochemical tests (Fuchsin S, methylene blue, Lugol´s solution etc.). Fragments and their polished sections were measured in the Polymer Institute in Brno and on the infrared microscope Kontinuum with microspectrometer Nexus (Thermo Nicolet, USA), in the reflection mode, in the range 4000–650 cm-1 with resolution 4 cm-1 and the resulting spectrums were evaluated with Omnic 7.2 software (Thermo Electron Co.). The IRPA-KIK laboratory analyzed the binder in the Christ’s incarnate with infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transformation (FTIR Bruker, Hyperion 3000) on a diamond plate in the transmission mode, in the range 4000–650 cm-1 and also with gas chromatography with mass spectroscopy (GC-MS Polaris Q, Interscience) after derivatization in the methylating agent Meth-Prep II24 diluted with benzene in the ratio 1:2; (v:v). Organic dyes in the sample from the Christ’s blood were analyzed with liquid chromatography with an UV-Vis detector (HPLC-DAD, Spectratech Finigan, detector UV 6000). Before HPLC analysis the dye was extracted from the sample under mild non-hydrolyzing conditions in the mixture HF (4N): dimethylformamide: acetonitril, in the ratio 2:1:1.25
Ground layer
The chalk ground found in all collected samples of colour layers consists of natural chalk containing planctonic foraminifers and nanofossils (Coccolithophore). In the samples from the Christ’s hair and Christ’s pedestal there are four to five chalk coats. On the console four coats of chalk at maximum were found; the bottom coat was the finest. Samples of the ground layer from all parts of polychrome sculpture contained bubbles which appeared during application of natural chalk in a mixture with protein binder. The surface of the ground was covered with brown 24 Meth-Prep II is a commercial name for 0.2M m-(trifluoromethyl) phneyltrimetylammonium hydroxide in methanol. 25 Sanyová J., Mild Extraction of Dyes by Hydrofluoric Acid in Routine Analysis of Historical Paint Micro-Samples, Microchim Acta 162, 2008, p. 361-370.; Sanyová J., Weisse J., Development of a Mild Method for the Extraction of Anthraquinones form their Aluminum Complexes in Madder Lakes prior to HPLC Analysis, Journal of Cultural Heritage, 7/4 (2006), p. 229-235.

protein insulation. On certain places, in paintings of green shades on the console and also in green colors on the Christ’s pedestal, the insulation was nearly grey-black. It is not excluded that the layer was tinted intentionally as it contains carbon black and red earths and locally also white lead. The surface of the Christ’s waist cloth is covered with fine grooves imitating fabric texture.
Painting
Green Christ’s pedestal and green console extension with the angel bust
On the pedestal a layer containing “lumpy” lead white, chalk and gypsum was found, tinted with green verdigris and copper pigment with a higher content of sulfur, carbon black and earthy pigments. The same composition was found for the oldest green layer found in samples of green paint on the console with the angel. Green crown of thorns and Christ’s hair
The painting of the crown of thorns has two to three color layers (Fig. 5 A, B, C). The bottom brown layer contains earth pigments, green verdigris, lead-tin yellow and angular grains of white lead of various sizes, as well as an admixture of natural chalk. On this layer a green paint was subsequently applied containing grains of green verdigris, earth pigments and coarseand fine-grained white lead. Significant impurities were present on the surface of that layer. The next layer (without specific datation) contains fine-grained white lead with an admixture of chalk pigmented with earth pigments, iron red, carbon black, and also spherulitic grains of copper pigment (probably artificial malachite, the so-called Schifergrün26) (Fig. 6). An oil repaint, which comes from the 19th century at the earliest, is represented with a layer of blue organic binder (indigo) which runs into the crackles, with chrome yellow in baritic white and white lead. Another repaint contains earth pigments, green organic pigment precipitated on barite and gypsum and the last intervention was only a retouch with earth pigments, barium white and white lead in a mixture with green verdigris and cinnabar. The color layer of the Christ’s hair consists of a paint containing ironrich earths in a mixture with fine-grained white lead and natural chalk with green verdigris. The next layer contains additionally also umber and probably also ivory black. 26 The pigment has been described in detail in Heydenreich G., Spring M., Stillhammerova M., Pina C. M., Malachite Pigment of Spherical Particle from, the 14th Triannial Meeting, ICOM-CC, The Hague 2005, p. 480-488.

Angel’s hair and collar
The angel’s hair, collar, strips across the chest and angel wings were gilded (mordant gilding). The collected samples from the hair and collar (Fig. 7, 8) showed that on the chalk ground there was a thin coat of an oil adhesive – boiled oil with an admixture of lead siccatives, on which a thin foil was applied of the socalled part-gold, and in German Zwischgold, which now already manifests visible corrosion of black silver sulfide (Ag2S). The blackening of Zwischgold was mentioned by Cennino Cennini.27 On the decorated collar with a painted brocade pattern, which is also present on the strips across the chest, the Zwischgold foil surface was painted with a dark paint containing carbon black, green verdigris and cinnabar. The subsequent repaint of the original plated Zwischgold was in the following periods, in locations where it was damaged, covered with a coat of the oil gilding, which contained earth pigments, minium and white lead, and with pure gold foil with a top lake. This repaint cannot be specifically dated as it may have been applied from the Renaissance period until early Baroque. Another intervention dates back probably only to the 19th century when the gold was insulated with a fluorecent resin similar to shellac and coated with oil mixtion with plated brass on the surface, the so-called metal. Gilded hem of the Christ’s waist cloth with notching and beading on the Christ’s pedestal
In the course of the restoration there was visible gilding on the hem of the Christ’s waist-cloth, which was the only gilding on the Christ statue. Similarly, the Christ’s pedestal contains only decorative gilding of the beading. However, no layers of the original gilding – neither a ground nor a metal foil - were found in the microsamples taken from Christ’s waist-cloth or from a damaged place of the golden rim of the dark Christ’s pedestal. Only secondary plated brass (metal) was found there. When analyzing the gilded waist-cloth (Fig. 9 A, B) a light coat of paint was found on the chalk ground with a protein insulation, which contained white lead and chalk.28 Crackles of this white ground were fouled with a top layer of fine yellow ochre but without gilding. To check this, a new sample (Fig. 9 C) was taken which confirmed the same stratigraphy of the oldest layers – the yellow ochre layer with protein binders without any metal traces. Therefore a ques27 Cennino C., Kniha o umění středověku (Book on medieval art) (Il Libro dell´Arte, 1437), Prague 1946, chapter 95, p. 129. 28 A similar composition was identified in Brabant Christ from the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. tion arises whether this is the original poliment or whether the yellow hem was added later. However, the fact that this layer was impressed into crackles of the bottom layer permits us to incline towards the hypothesis that this was a secondary intervention and not the original layer. This is also suggested by the following layer, which covered the plated Zwischgold and which had the same composition as the first repaint on the angel’s polychrome sculpture. A similar problem can be found in the place of gilding on the pedestal beading. It is possible that even the pedestal beading was not originally gilded. The oldest layers contained a distinctly dark color containing carbon black, similar to the oldest paint coat from the inscription tablet above Christ. On the surface of the black paint on the Christ’s pedestal there was an additional thin layer of white lead, mildly tinted with earth pigments – adjustment of the dark paint. Inscription tablet above Christ
Only a black paint on a white chalk ground without gilding was found in the Gothic minuscule (Fig. 10) on the inscription tablet. A oil gilding was found over the whiting putty, which contained earths and an admixture of lead pigments (minium, lead white), chalk and golden leafs of lower purity (admixture of copper and silver) with a top lake. This repaint, also found on the angel on the golden decorated collar with a brocade pattern and in the golden hair, cannot be specifically dated as it may come from the Renaissance period or the early Baroque period. It was followed by a painting of background with golden letters, where repaint consisted of a lake made of powder brass (metal). Incarnates
The material analysis of incarnates was performed in two stages: the first stage compared a sample of the Christ’s incarnate and two samples from the angel.29 The restorer Tomáš Berger formulated the question, why is the angel’s incarnate on the side facing the window light and why is the part of the angel’s cheek turned away from the light more pink. The Christ’s incarnate (Fig. 11) in the sample contained white lead with an admixture of calcium carbonate tinted with a red lake pigment precipitated on an aluminum-containing substrate, as well as earths, carbon black and a minor admixture of lead-tin yellow.30 A blue pigment – azurite – was found in the 29 Christ: right side at the ribs, angel: pink from the right part of the chin and right part of the neck at the collar. 30 Isolated grains of lead–tin yellow were identified only in the sample analyzed in the IRPA/KIK laboratory and thus it is obvious that it was represented in the incarnate painting only

proximity of wounds. However, the distribution of pigments in low concentrations depended on a sampling location and therefore it is not surprising that polished cross-sections from different locations have different compositions. The angel’s (Fig. 12) incarnate samples, investigated both in the ALMA laboratory and IRPA/KIK laboratory, seemed to consist of two layers: the bottom rose coat contained white lead and natural chalk with a red organic dye precipitated on an aluminum-containing substrate,31 earth pigments and also a grain of azurite; the top light double-layer contained nearly pure white lead, only very slightly tinted with fine grains of a red lake pigment, and locally also carbon black. This stage also included an investigation of the incarnate of hands holding the inscription tablet. The incarnate of the right and left hands on the inscription tablet above Christ is nearly identical with that of the angel’s. In the laboratory ALMA two coats of white lead and chalk, red organic dye precipitated on aluminum-containing substrate, carbon black and azurite were found (Fig. 13). Three repaints were distinguished over these oldest layers. The first belongs to the Renaissance period or early Baroque (cinnabar, minium, and organic dye). Second one is tinted solely by cinnabar in the white lead and the last third repaint, made in the 19th century at the earliest, contained lead white and barium white pigmented with earth pigments The organic pigment in the oldest incarnate layers, particularly on the angel, manifested fluorescence which might suggest that the red lake was made from a common madder lake (Krapplak).32 However, the identification of dyestuffs in organic pigments required an HPLC analysis, which cannot have been performed due to the small quantity of dyestuffs in the layer. The samples taken from the painting were sufficient only for observation and analysis of the substrate on a polished cross-section. It is also possible to anticipate that the incarnate conin the minimum quantity. The sample of Christ’s incarnate for the analysis in the IRPA/KIK laboratory was taken from his chest. 31 Samples of incarnates contained in the white lead only very small grains of organic lake and therefore the EDX analysis of the individual grains determined only presence of aluminum in the substrate. The analyses of the organic pigment with FTIR spectroscopy was not possible 32 Fluorescence of madder (Krapplak) is described by Schweppe H.,Winter J., Madder and Alizarin, in: Fitzhugh E. W. (ed.), Artists’ Pigments: A Handbook of Their History and Characteristics, Vol. 3, Oxford 1997, p. 109-134.; Rozlucka Z., Roznerska M., Arszyńska J., Mikroskopia fluorescencyjna: Zastosowanie w badaniu budowy i procesów konserwacji malarstwa sztalugowego, Toruň 2000, p. 147. tained the same dyestuff as the painted blood, which has been proved to contain a lake from Indian lake and common madder (see below). The red lake is commonly used in incarnates of Dutch polychromes, sometimes jointly with cinnabar, sometimes with red earths, azurite or minium.33 On polished microsections a distinct fluorescence of the incarnate layer was observed.34 The use of organic pigments thus also enables to explain the observed change of coloring in the face of the angel which is permanently exposed to the daylight from the windows on the southern side of the council room. Organic pigments are less resistant against photo oxidation than inorganic pigments (earth pigments or cinnabar). It should be noted that the distribution of the colored pigment, added in low concentrations into the white lead, depends on the location of incarnate samples close to the wounds and veins and therefore we do not find the same composition in each of the samples. Luminescence of incarnates
The luminescence of incarnates observed in UV was distinctly yellowish, which is not typical for statues from that period in the Central European region. The fluorescence of the incarnate layer was also visible in cross sections on microsamples observed with an optical microscope. At high magnification it is possible to see large grains of white lead, with strongly fluorescent contours in UV-fluorescence, which suggests a process of dissolution (saponification) of the pigment in the surrounding binder and formation of lead salts of carboxylic acids (soaps). Oil binder has been identified with GC-MS and it is probably flax seed oil.35 infrared-spectroscopy confirmed presence of lead soaps. The process of saponification proceeds faster in case of small grains which fill in the space between the large ones. Presence of lead-tin yellow may speed up the process. Lead soaps may cause the 33 Unpublished research by the IRPA/KIK laboratory. 34 The fluorescence depends on a ratio of the binder and pigment – the fluorescence may increase with the presence of an organic pigment in the incarnate layer. 35 The presence of flax seed oil was determined based on the ratio of the saturated fatty palmitic and stearic acids (P/S = 1,5), which in principal does not change in the course of drying or aging of the binder. Although the identification is not completely positive, as the analyzed sample contained a relatively low quantity azelaic acid in comparison with palmitic acid, the possible interpretation of the fatty component may be also an admixture of egg yolk. As the FTIR analyses did not detect any protein component we support the hypothesis of flax seed oil. The azelaic acid is a dicarboxylic saturated acid with a low number of carbons in the chain (C9) which guarantees a certain mobility to it. When organic solvents are used for the restoration process it may be selectively extracted from the colored oil layer which would also explain its low content in the Christ’s incarnate.

non-typical fluorescence and this also increases transparency of the oil-bonded layer. Christ’s blood
A sample taken from the blood on the Christ’s hand contained both inorganic pigment identified with SEM–EDX (coarse grain mineral cinnabar)36 and with HPLC-DAD, and two types of organic pigment. The first organic pigment was prepared from Kerria lacca (Kerriidae), the second from madder (Rubia tinctorum L.). The lake from lacca (lac-insect, lac day) can be commonly found on statues from northern and western Europe from the 13th and 14th centuries, while madder lake (Krapplak) (made of common madder) is more common in the later periods. Unfortunately, the analyzed sample did not make it possible to prepare a polished section to decide whether it was a mixture of lacca and madder or whether the madder was used later for a secondary intervention. Apart from organic dyestuffs, the HPLC-DAD method also demonstrated presence of dehydroabietic and 7-oxo-dehydroabietic acids, typical degradation products of resin from pine trees, e.g. colophony or Strasbourg turpentine.
Material analysis – discussion
The mutual relation between three different parts of the investigated polychrome – Man of sorrows, console and inscription tablet - were investigated in detail in terms of technology and material analysis and we did not find any fundamental differences demonstrating their origination in different workshops. However, it should be added that the pigments used in the polychrome are in no way exceptional for the given period. How can we support our statement that the three parts come from the same period? Apart from the similarity in the technical structure it may be also the identification of Zwischgold and organic lake in all the oldest incarnates, which was used instead of cinnabar, used commonly in incarnates on sculptures from home workshops. Although the result has been supported only by a small number of HPLC analyses of organic pigments, 37 the presence 36 Vermillion applied in a continual layer may have probably outlined places for painting with a red lake or it may have been applied to multiply the optical effect and dramatic character of the bleeding wounds. 37 Unpublished results of HPLC analyses of organic pigments from works from the 15th -16th centuries from the Czech and Slovak territories in the laboratory IRPA/KIK, Sanyová J., Organický pigment z Mareny farbiarskej a iných rastlín rodu Rubiaceae: História, príprava a použitie v európskej maľbe a polychrómii / Kraplak: Organic pigments from madder and the other plants of Rubiaceae: History of preparation and occurrence in European painting and polychrome sculpture, in:
of lacca made of Kerria lacca (Ker.) in the Christ’s blood, along with common madder (Rubia tinctorum L.), used mostly in the Mediterranean region, is less common on this territory. Lacca can be found particularly on Italian paintings from the 15th to the 16th centuries. Similarly, there are numerous documented HPLC analyses of works of art in the National Gallery in London. 38 On Flemish and German panel paintings and polychromes from the same period there are practically only common madder (Rubia tinctorum L.) and kermes (Kermes vermilio Planchon), while lacca can be found only exceptionally. 39 Lacca can be commonly found in polychromes from western and northern Europe in the 13th and 14th centuries. Starting from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries we can find organic pigments from common madder and from kermes much more often.40 On the Christ statue we have found both lacca and madder while it was impossible to verify whether the samples really came from the original layer of the blood. Nevertheless, the presence of lacca suggests that it is not a commonly used material and it may be an evidence of the suggested cooperation between the Master of the Týn Calvary with west European artists and also his continuation of earlier technological traditions. In the paint of blood the layer of incarnate was underpainted by cinnabar and coated by a darker red lake glazing.41 This glazing spatially exceeded the underpainting. Similarly, this method of painting is visible in the paint of blood near the wounds of the Man of sorrows in the New Town City Hall in Prague (Fig. 14) and also is described for the case of the Man of sorrows from Poznan42 - this statue is similar to Prague’s artworks. In case of Zwischgold it should be noted that in the initial materials analysis43 silver was mistakenly identified instead of Zwischgold and similarly also Proceedings from the VIth International Workshop on Restoration, Bardejov 27-29 September 2006, Bratislava 2007, p. 32-47, 97103. 38 Kirby J., White R., The Identification of Red Lake Pigment Dyestuffs and Discussion of their Use, National Gallery Technical Bulletin 17,1996, p. 56-80. 39 Kirby J., White R., The Identification of Red Lake Pigment Dyestuffs and Discussion of their Use, National Gallery Technical Bulletin 17,1996, p. 56-80. 40 White R., Kirby J., Some Observations on the Binder and Dyestuff Composition of Glaze Paints in Early European Panel Paintings, in: Medieval painting in Northern Europe, 2006, p. 216. 41 Pechová D., Kristus trpitel (Man of sorrows), 1420-1440, manuscript of laboratory reports , Prague 2006 42 Grzelachowska J. :Zabitki Poznani. cinnabar instead of red lake. Zwischgold is a very thin but heterogeneous layer of wrought plates of silver and gold, while the ratio of the two metals may significantly vary locally. If we rely only on one analysis of the metal it may easily happen that we will identify only silver. Silver is much more conspicuous as it corrodes into rich efflorescence, while gold remains pure. Meanwhile, the distinction between silver and Zwischgold is of key importance from the viewpoint of further interpretation. The technology of mordant or oil gilding with Zwischgold on boiled oil suggests a very old method of attaching the metal foil without the intention of further polishing or polishing only to the extent enabled by the white ground. The gilding is thus characterized by a lighter tone. White grounds under the gold and silver come from Romanesque art traditions.44 It is generally accepted that cheaper Zwischgold was used to substitute more expensive gold. However, it remains questionable whether it was a real lack of funds, i.e. cheap substitute, or only the painter’s “slickness”. A key role in the more general spreading of Zwischgold was played mainly by the resulting coloring of paintings. According to T. Brachert, Zwischgold was increasingly popular from the 14th century particularly on statue frames.45 In the Czech environment it was identified on an imitation of brocade (glued on mixtion) on the oldest wall painting after 1325 in the church of St. Lawrence in the Prague Old Town (former St. Anne monastery in the Prague Old Town).46 During a restoration of Forstenried crucifix from ca. 1200 J. Taubert and F. Buchenrieder described, without any analyses, a non-pigmented yellowish layer under the Zwischgold (also unclear is the description of a metal foil made up of two layers of base silver and top gold).47 However, it is sure that Zwischgold was in the 15th century plentifully used mainly in the German language area, which has been also confirmed by investigations made by the ALMA laboratory on Gothic panel paintings and polychrome statues in Slovakia and Romanian Transylvania. Most of the investigated works of art had Zwischgold under the glazing of applied or pressed brocades (the so-called 44 Straub R. Pressbrokat) and also under the transparent draperies.48 Historical documents49 also imply that gilding on a white chalk ground or yellow glue (oil or oil-resin adhesive, sometimes colored with a dyestuff, boiled oil) prevailed in the German language area but also in northern Europe. The application of a golden foil without bole is typical for the 13th century and persists until the 14th and 15th centuries when gilding with bole started to be used.50 The coloring of grounds under the gilding is also associated with purity of the golden plates. After 1400 Armenian (red) bole started to be used under the gilding (poliment gilding). Also a black bole was known. According to literature sources, in this case it was an additionally pigmented red bole.51 However, there is no evidence about the existence of yellow earthy bole under gilding in the Gothic period. Eike Dehn denies its existence.52 The analysis thus indicates that the assumption of two different gilding techniques on the examined polychrome of the Man of sorrows, which might document the different times of origin, is probably incorrect. On the contrary, the oil gilding with Zwischgold is original on all parts except the Christ statue, which originally had no gilding. The original yellow layer on the waist cloth hem represents the paint and not the yellow ground (poliment); thus all gilding is secondary. Therefore we cannot claim that Christ was gilded with poliment (bole) and the parts added later were decorated with cheaper Zwischgold. Zwischgold was very common and in this case it rather indicates the relation of the entire polychrome to the German language area. This technique was even frequently prohibited locally by guild regulations, e.g. in Brabant. However, many analyses have shown that such prohibitions were violated. 48 Serendan C., Hradilová J. All original polychrome layers on all the three parts have substantial impurities on the surface. The existence of the Renaissance or the early Baroque repaint, which cannot be specified based on the pigments, is documented by samples from incarnate on hands holding the inscription tablet above Christ (described above), and by black contours of originally only gilded wings and black contours on the console and also by repaints over Zwischgold with a ground under mixtion (earth pigments, while lead, minium) and gold leaf. The black contours were painted with a mixture of black, minium and green verdigris.53 The green repaint of the console with the angel has a nearly identical composition54 as the original layers, while the only difference is a higher intensity of the green color. The original “green“ contains more earth pigments than copper pigment. Studying of other repaints is of no importance for the time classification of the polychrome.
Results of the material analysis in the art history context – discussion
The stratigraphic and material analyses of polychromes on all three parts of the work of art – Man of sorrows, console with an angel bust and inscription tablet, demonstrate technological similarities and thus support the opinion that they are a part of one original artwork and one can assume their simultaneous origination in a workshop of the same master. The research thus brings new grounds for further professional investigations and discussions. Without having specific historical sources or other persuasive evidence we can hardly determine wh-e ther the polychrome comes from one workshop but its technique might help us to investigate artistic links which the sculptor had or continued.55 Analyses of 53 Hradilová J., Hradil D., Bolestný Kristus (Man of sorrows), manuscript of reports on material analysis, Prague 2008, 2009. 54 Dorothea Pechová, Kristus trpitel (Man of sorrows), 14201440, manuscript of laboratory reports, Prague 2006. 55 Sculptors and painters in the Middle Ages worked together both on decoration of altars and on polychrome of sculptures. For example Nicolaus Gerhaert van Leyden cooperated on decoration of the main altar of the parish church of St. George in Nördlingen (1462) with painter Friedrich Herlin, who is also believed, based on a complaint from 1478, to have cooperated with sculpture Simon Lainberger from Nurnberg. For more information about the compliant see Stafski, H., Der Nürnberger Bildhauer Simon Lainberger als Mitarbeiter der Maler Friedrich Herlin und Hans Pleydenwurff, Anzeiger des Germanischen Nationalmuseums 1982, p. 23-30. The work and biographical data of painter F. Herlin from Nördlingen clearly indicate that he was in contact with sculptors in Strasbourg , Ulm and Nurnberg; despite the geographical distances that were relatively big for that period of time.
the polychrome in a broader scale identically indicate the influence of the German technique of painting, particularly the use of zwischgold for gilding and use of organic lakes instead of cinnabar in incarnates. As mentioned earlier, red lake in incarnates was more common in northern and western Europe than in this country. It is therefore possible that the Prague author had close relations to the German language environment. The examined work of art is classified within oeuvre of the Master of the Týn Calvary and the time of its origination in this context has been most recently identified at around 1440.56 Then the Master was believed to continue his work in Prague where he had arrived at the time of the return of the Emperor Sigmund.57 In the case of the Man of sorrows M. Bartlová presented a convincing hypothesis, which was based not only on the style-critical analysis but also on a broad knowledge of the historical context. The association of the work with the Prague artistic environment is confirmed not only by documentation of its primary location but also by the iconographic interpretation. The statue is a combination of a traditional Eucharistic type of the Man of sorrows with a gesture of the apocalyptic judge, which was to represent embodiment of the God’s law in the world by means of the Eucharistic community of the renewed church.58 Thus it completely resonates with the period atmosphere of the Utraquist Prague in the 15th century. A nearly identical carving of the Man of sorrows, classified within oeuvre of the Master of the Týn Calvary, decorated the New Town City Hall in Prague in the 15th century (Fig. 15). That the Man of sorrows statue, now in the collections of the Museum of the Capital City of Prague,59 has been preserved without any accessories60 and therefore we can only compare 56 See M. the carving on a pedestal. The statue was professionally restored two times,61 unfortunately material analyses were not performed in either case and the interventions were only of restoration-preservation nature which makes it impossible to perform a relevant comparison of the polychromes. Both works demonstrate a high level of realism, which is based on a good knowledge of the male anatomy (Fig. 16, 17).62 Differences between the carvings have been found only in details, such as shaping, anatomic motifs etc.63 The artistic congruity of the two works of art is so high that experts anticipate the same time of their origin or that they followed immediately one after another. In the past the Old Town Man of sorrows was considered to be the first, while the New Town Christ was believed to follow. Earlier studies, which dated both the artworks in the early 15th century, were based on written sources,64 while the new interpretation made by M. Bartlová justly avoids making a statement about which of the works by the Master of the Týn Calvary was created first. One of the reasons is the fact that no sources have been found to explain why the Master created two nearly identical works of art in the same period of time and it is impossible to identify a specific historical-political impulse for their creation. Similar life-size statue of the Man of sorrow is located in Poznan, Poland.65 (Fig. 18) According to M. Bartlová this statue was created in the same workshop or the artist should know very well the work of the Master of the Týn Calvary.66 By means of mate61 Živný J., Musilová J., Restaurování dřevěné polychromované plastiky „Bolestný Kristus“ z Novoměstské radnice (Restoration of wooden polychrome sculpture “Man of sorrows“ from the New Town City Hall, reg. rials and the painting technique the sculpture from Poznan is similar with the Corpus Christi in Poznan and dated to 1452. When summarizing results of the analysis it is beyond any doubt that the unit from the Old Town is consistent in terms of time of its origin. We can try to look at it also from the prospective of the console with the angel bust, which was due to its advanced style put into connection with works by Hans Multscher (†1467). Meanwhile, the latest style-critical comparison made by M. Bartlová permits to shift the datation before 1450 because - based on this new concept - the Master’s work finished before the middle of the 15th century,67 while earlier datations of the angel bust were in 1560s at the earliest and it was used to demonstrate the style changing process in Prague.68 In the first case there is a picture of an artist who developed in Bohemia the style of Hans Multscher from Swabian Ulm. However, if we base our considerations on the earlier proposed datation of the bust and if we reflect the material analyses, in this context it would mean that the Christ statue was created in the middle of the 15th century at the earliest. But how can we resolve the contradiction perceived by some experts between the advanced style of the console with the angel bust and the figure of the Man of sorrows? Although we can ask a question whether Christ from the Old Town is a period copy of the Christ from the New Town69, similar to that known from the practices of the Flemish panel painting,70 professional discussions cannot developed any further without style-critical comparisons, additional material analyses and detailed investigations of the construction development and decoration of the Old Town City Hall, for which the unit was created and whose monumental late medieval reconstruction started under the reign of George of Poděbrady (1458-1471).
Conclusion
Additional analyses exceed the scope of this contribution, the purpose of which is not to answer the 67 Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské (Master of the Týn Calvary: Czech sculptor of the Hussite period), Prague 2004, p. 123. 68 Liška A., České sochařství v době slohové přeměny kolem roku 1450 (Czech sculpture at the time of style transformation around 1450), Umění 9, 1961, No. 4, p. 379, 386-387. 69 Figure of the Man of sorrows as the apocalyptic judge must have been a significant and central work of art in the decoration of the courtroom of the New Town City Hall, whose respectable imitation was certainly suitable for decoration of the Old Town City Hall. 70 For example period copies of the artwork by Master of Flémalle (Annunciation etc.), Rogier van der Weyden (St. Lucas painting Madonna etc.) and others.

questions asked in the discussion section but rather to ask questions based on results of the analyses so that they serve as new impulses in the professional discussion about the Old Town Man of sorrows. However, the results of analyses of the style, historical context of material and technological traits of polychrome in a team cooperation of various experts on the example of the Man of sorrows from the Old Town City Hall have shown that they may lead to a more credible story of the work of art and its deeper understanding in the context of the period art development. Although many questions remain unanswered and many new questions have been asked, the material analysis of the polychrome has meant a substantial shift in the viewing of the concerned work of art. The acquired valuable data about the material composition may serve for a number of new comparisons and open more consistent investigations in the process of its restoration. When asking the right questions, the very restoration of the work of art is often a unique opportunity to get maximum information for further professional investigations – both within humanities or sciences. In conclusion, we can only express our regrets that the restorations of the Man of sorrows from the New Town City Hall by the Master of the Týn Calvary in 1995 and in 2006 failed to include material analyses.

restaurování a bez fyzického zásahu do zkoumaného díla.

Možnost potvrzují i shody s dílem jeho současníka ulmského sochaře 12 K tomu Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské, Praha 2004, s. 87-90.
S posunem datace díla Mistra Týnské kalvárie vzniká nový obraz o uměleckém vývoji v Praze i Bolestném Kristu samém, přesto i nadále provázeném odbornými polemikami.

Cílem aktualizace doplňkových analýz bylo porovnat polychromii konzoly s bustou anděla s polychromií Krista, tzn. zkoumat jednotlivé dobové podobnosti a rozdíly. Byly proto znovu odebrány vzorky polychromie – malba z konzoly, podstavce Krista a z Kristovy trnové koruny (zelená barevnost), vzorky malby z vlasů anděla i Krista (hnědá barevnost), zlacení z límce anděla, z lemu bederní roušky Krista zdobeného vrubořezem a oblounku podstavce Kris18 Berger T., Bolestný Kristus na konzole s andělem ze Staroměstské radnice v Praze, rkp. restaurátorské zprávy, Praha 2005; uloženo: Národní památkový ústav, územní odborné pracoviště v hlavním městě Praze, archiv oddělení dokumentace, inv. č. 688/07, RZ 22. 19 Berger T., Bolestný Kristus na konzole s andělem ze Staroměstské radnice v Praze, rkp. restaurátorské zprávy, Praha 2005; uloženo: Národní památkový ústav, územní odborné pracoviště v hlavním městě Praze, archiv oddělení dokumentace, inv. č. 688/07, RZ 22. 20 Berger T. ta. Dále byly odebrány inkarnáty anděla a Krista ve stejném odstínu. Jednotlivé vzorky byly dodávány v průběhu restaurování a u inkarnátů Krista i anděla již neobsahovaly přemalby. V závěru restaurování byly ještě odebrány vzorky z písmen gotické minuskuly a rukou držících nápisovou desku nad Kristem. Pojidlo původního inkarnátu Krista, vykazujícího neobvyklou fluorescenci, jakož i barviva červeného laku použitého pro malbu krve, byly analyzovány v laboratoři Královského institutu výtvarného dědictví (IRPA/KIK) v Bruselu. 23 Vzorky k této analýze byly odebrané restaurátorem T. Bergerem.
Metody materiálového průzkumu
V laboratoři ALMA byly fragmenty odebrané z dřevěné polychromie pozorovány stereoskopem Leica S8 APO Stereozoom a následně zality do polyesterové pryskyřice Neukadur. Pozorování probíhalo v bílém odraženém světle v kombinaci bočního osvětlení v tmavém poli a bylo doplněno sledováním luminiscence pigmentů a organických látek v dopadajícím UV zářením (Hg výbojka, typ záření UVA: 330–380 nm). V laboratoři IRPA/KIK byly vzorky zalité do akrylatové pryskyřice Spofacryl a studovány v optickém mikroskopu AXIOPLAN (Zeiss) s UV a Vis osvětlením.

Zelený podstavec Krista a zelený nástavec konzoly s bustou anděla
V místech podstavce byla identifikována vrstva s obsahem „hrudkovité“ olovnaté běloby, křídy a sádry, tónovaná měděnkou a měďnatým pigmentem s vyšším obsahem síry, uhlíkatou černí a hlinkami. Stejné složení má rovněž i nejstarší zelená vrstva zjištěná ve vzorcích zelené malby konzoly s andělem. Zelená trnová koruna a vlasy Krista
Malba trnové koruny má dvě až tři barevné vrstvy (obr. 5 A, B, C). Spodní hnědá vrstva obsahuje hlinky, měděnku, olovnato-cíničitou žluť a ostrohranná zrnka olovnaté běloby o různé velikosti, také příměs přírodní křídy. Další vrstva (bez bližší datace) obsahuje jemnozrnnou olovnatou bělobu s příměsí křídy pigmentovanou hlinkami, železitou červení, uhlíkatou černí, a také sferulitickými zrny mědnatého pigmentu (pravděpodobně umělý malachit, tzv. Vlasy a límec anděla
Vlasy, límec, pásky přes hruď a perutě anděla byly pozlacené. Z odebraných vzorků z límce a vlasů (obr. Následná přemalba originálního plátkového Zwischgold byla v dalších obdobích v místech poškození překryta vrstvou mixtionu, obsahující hlinky, minium a olovnatou bělobu, a fólií z ryzího zlata s povrchovým lakem.
Nad křídovým tmelem bylo zjištěno olejové zlacení s obsahem hlinek a s příměsí olovnatých pigmentů (minium, olovnatá běloba), křídy a fólie zlata s nižší ryzostí (příměs mědi a stříbra) s povrchovým lakem.

V laboratoři ALMA byly zjištěné dva nátěry s olovnatou bělobou a křídou, červené organické barvivo srážené na hliník, azurit a uhlíkatá čerň (obr. 13).
32 Fluorescence mořenového laku (kraplaku) popisuje Schweppe H.,Winter J., Madder and Alizarin, in: Fitzhugh E. W. (ed.), Artists’ Pigments: A Handbook of Their History and Characteristics, Vol.3, Oxford 1997, s. 109-134.; Rozlucka Z., Roznerska M., Arszyńska J., Mikroskopia fluorescencyjna: Zastosowanie w badaniu budowy i procesów konserwacji malarstwa sztalugowego, Toruň 2000, s. 147.

Vzájemný vztah tří různých částí studované polychromie – Bolestný Kristus, konzola, nápisová deska, jsme podrobně sledovali technologickým a materiálovým pohledem a nenalezli zásadní odlišnosti, prokazující jejich vznik v odlišných dílnách. 37 Nepublikované výsledky HPLC analýz organických pigmentů z děl 15.-16. století z českého a slovenského území v laboratoři IRPA/KIK, Sanyová J., Organický pigment z Mareny farbiarskej a iných rastlín rodu Rubiaceae: História, príprava a použitie v európskej maľbe a polychrómii / Kraplak: Organic pigments from madder and the other plants of Rubiaceae: History of preparation and occurrence in European painting and polychrome sculpture, in: Zbornik prednasok VI.

Zkusme tedy na dílo pohlédnout také z per64 Souhrn podává Chlíbec J., Štefanová-Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Pražská řezbářská dílna předhusitské doby, katalog výstavy, Praha 1990, s. 36. 65 Grzelachowska J. :Zabitki Poznani.-Konserwacja rzeźby „Chrystus Bolesny“ z fary poznańskiej, Kronika miasta Poznania,1995, s. 269-282 66 Bartlová M., Mistr Týnské kalvárie: Český sochař doby husitské, Praha 2004, s. 77.
